A New York-based columnist has reported that she was sexually assaulted by Egyptian Police in Cairo.

Mona Eltahawy, also an activist and acclaimed public speaker, wrote on Twitter that she had been arrested and beaten after covering unrest in the Tahrir Square area on Thursday.

In a string of heated tweets, the American-Egyptian describes being taken to the Interior Ministry before being subjected to a barrage of sexual assault.

‘Military intelligence blindfolded me for 2 hrs. Didn’t want 2 go with them but 1 said I either go politely or else. 3 hrs later,’ she tweeted.

‘5 or 6 surrounded me, groped and prodded my breasts, grabbed my genital area and I lost count how many hands tried to get into my trousers,’ she recounts at @monaeltahawy.

After being arrested at approximately 4am local time on Thursday (9pm ET, Wednesday), she borrowed another activist’s phone to send one chilling tweet from inside the Ministry: ‘Beaten arrested in interior ministry.’

She says she was eventually released after 12 hours in captivity and later posted a photo of her badly swollen right hand.

At around 8:20am ET Thursday, she posted another image of both arms in plaster after X-rays revealed her left arm and right hand were broken in the assault.

Port Said-born Ms Eltahawy, who was awarded the EU’s Samir Kassir Prize for Freedom of the Press in 2009, writes columns for Canada’s Toronto Star, Israel’s The Jerusalem Report and Denmark’s Politiken.

Her articles have also appeared in a host of international newspapers and network sites, including the Washington Post, International Herald Tribune and CNN.

She has thanked well-wishers for their support and writes that if it hadn’t been for her dual citizenship, ‘God knows what wuld’ve happened.’
