A former U.S. Army Ranger and Occupy Oakland protester was in intensive care on Friday after a veterans group said he was beaten by police during clashes with demonstrators this week.

The veteran, identified as Kayvan Sabeghi, was the second former American serviceman during the past two weeks to be badly hurt in confrontations between anti-Wall Street protesters and police in Oakland.

The group Iraq Veterans Against the War said Sabeghi was detained during disturbances that erupted late on Wednesday in downtown Oakland and was charged with resisting arrest and remaining present at the place of a riot.

Highland General Hospital confirmed that Sabeghi was a patient in the intensive care unit there.

Brian Kelly, who co-owns a brew pub with Sabeghi, said his business partner served as an Army Ranger in Iraq and Afghanistan. He said Sabeghi told him he was arrested and beaten by a group of policemen as he was leaving the protest to go home.

“He told me he was in the hospital with a lacerated spleen and that the cops had jumped him,” Kelly said. “They put him in jail, and he told them he was injured, and they denied him medical treatment for about 18 hours.”

The Oakland Police Department did not immediately return calls seeking comment. Sabeghi’s name was listed by the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office as one of more than 100 people arrested that night.

The veterans group said in a statement that police struck Sabeghi with nightsticks on his hands, shoulders, ribs and back, and that in addition to a lacerated spleen he suffered from internal bleeding.

Clashes between police and demonstrators broke out in the early morning hours of Thursday in downtown Oakland following a day of mostly peaceful rallies and marches citywide against economic inequality and police brutality.

The Port of Oakland was forced to shut down during those demonstrations, sparked in part by the severe injury of another former serviceman, ex-Marine Scott Olsen, during a confrontation with police last week.

Olsen’s injury became a rallying cry for the anti-Wall Street protest movement nationwide.

In a crime that has shocked New Yorkers, two 12-year-olds allegedly dropped a
shopping cart from four stories up, letting it fall on the head of a woman
shopping for Halloween treats for underprivileged kids. She’s now clinging to
life.

Marion Salmon Hedges, 47, a successful Manhattan
real estate agent, was at an East Harlem mall along with her 13-year-old son
when the incident occurred Sunday, police said. Her son was not injured but was
hysterical after witnessing the incident, according to the New York Post.

Mother and son were walking through a breezeway at a popular shopping area
that includes, four stories up, a skyway that helps customers get to their
destination. That was the perch the kids allegedly used to toss a shopping cart
up and over the railing as a kind of prank, according to media reports.

Earlier in the day, the same kids were allegedly throwing drinks down on
unsuspecting passers-by. Later, they moved on to more deadly objects.

At one point, the cart became stuck on the railing. “A 14-year-old buddy
urged the duo to give it up,” the Post reported, quoting a source. But one of
the suspects “was so determined to make sure it went over the edge that he
allegedly pushed it again. It reportedly hit a sign on the way down, and then
struck the 47-year-old mother of two as she stood at a kiosk to pay for parking
outside Costco with her son, Dayton,” the Post reported.

Police sources told the Post that the two kids taken into custody later
laughed and joked about the incident.

A doctor who happened to be at the scene performed CPR and revived Hedges.
She was in critical but stable condition at New York City’s Harlem Hospital,
lying in a medically induced coma.

The Daily News reported that Hedges is an active volunteer at the Stanley M.
Isaacs Neighborhood Center — which serves the suspects’ neighborhood — and was
buying Halloween candy for the center when she was struck. She is also active in
her church and was named Outstanding Volunteer of 2006 by the Junior League,
according to the Post.

The boys are each being charged with assault and criminal possession of a
deadly weapon, a spokeswoman for the New York Police Department told the L.A.
Times.

The case has already triggered debate, with some saying law enforcement
should come down hard on the two suspects; others say the real blame lies with a
lack of security and safety fencing to keep items from hitting customers below,
either intentionally or unintentionally.

November 1, 2011     9:04 am

NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick suffered a broken clavicle and rib, and his
wife Linda had cuts and bruises, in the hard landing of their team’s business
jet Monday night in Key West, Fla., Hendrick Motorsports said in an updated
statement Tuesday.

The team initially said only there were no serious
injuries when the Gulfstream G150 ran off the runway at Key West International
Airport because of braking problems when it was landing.

A photograph released by the Monroe County sheriff’s office showed the jet
intact after it came to a stop, but with one wing partially submerged in a body
of water.

The Hendricks and the two pilots aboard the plane were taken to Lower Keys
Medical Center and released, the team said. “All four have safely returned to
North Carolina,” the team said.

Hendrick, 62, is one of the most successful owners in the NASCAR Sprint Cup
Series. His drivers are reigning champion Jimmie Johnson, four-time champion
Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Mark Martin.

“It was a real big scare. Very frightening to
hear,” Earnhardt told reporters in Las Vegas, where he was attending
the annual SEMA show, which showcases specialty automotive equipment, according
to Associated Press. “I’m very glad that he and everybody appears to be OK.”

A Canadian aid worker was shot and another man killed while driving through a suburb of Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Francklin Guerrier and the driver were attacked by people on a motorcycle, according to Radio-Canada correspondent in Haiti. The driver was killed.

Guerrier, a Quebec retired lawyer, was shot in the collar bone and is recovering, under police guard, in Trinité hospital, his brother Eric Piérre told Radio-Canada. .

He was travelling in a car with some family members and driver Noel Meriland when at least one assailant on a motorcycle opened fire at 6:30 a.m.Friday local time. Meriland was killed.

Guerrier is on the board of the Montreal-based organization Ayiti Dwa Moun, which means Haiti Human Rights. The organization has been around as a Canadian registered federal corporation since 1993 but hasn’t filed an annual return for the last three years and is facing dissolution.

The motive for the attack is unknown.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the Guerrier family as they recover from this tragic incident,” International Co-operation Minister Bev Oda said in a statement.

“I am glad to hear M. Guerrier is in stable condition. I offer condolences to the family of his friend. Our government is working with consular officials to ensure the family receives support in this time of need.”

Occupy Oakland organizers are planning to hold a peaceful vigil Wednesday afternoon for Scott Olsen, 24, a former Marine who was injured during protests Tuesday night.

Olsen served two tours of duty in Iraq and was hit in the head Tuesday by what may have been a tear gas canister, according to Dottie Guy, Bay Area chapter president of Iraq Veterans Against the War. (Warning: The above YouTube video, which shows Olsen, contains profanity at the end.)

Guy said her group saw a Twitter photo of a bleeding Olsen and tracked him down at Oakland’s Highland Hospital, where he is in serious but stable condition. [Updated at 4:05 p.m.: Hospital spokesman Curt Olsen (no relation) said his condition was upgraded Wednesday afternoon from critical to “critical but stable.”]

The group issued a news release saying that he sustained a skull fracture “after being shot in the head with a police projectile.”

Keith Shannon, who deployed with Olsen to Iraq said in a statement: “Scott was marching with the 99% because he felt corporations and banks had too much control over our government, and that they weren’t being held accountable for their role in the economic downturn, which caused so many people to lose their jobs and their homes.”

Interim Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan said Tuesday night that the tear gas and other measures were necessary because some in the crowd were throwing bottles, paint, eggs and other objects at officers.

Tragic: Local sources identified the victim as 15-year-old Catilyn Abercrombie. Police say she is in a stable condition after surgery

Oct. 25, 2011

A 15-year-old girl who was shot in the neck while eating lunch outside of her Cape Fear high school wrote a note from her hospital bed today to tell her supporters that she loved them.

Catilyn Abercrombie, who was shot by two classmates was described as a “fighter” by her mother, who asked the public for their prayers for her daughter, according to assistant superintendent Teresa Perry. A Facebook page, “Prayers for Catilyn Abercrombie,” had nearly 2,000 fans today.

“She has written that she loves everyone on a piece of a paper,” Perry said, though she didn’t have further details about the girl’s condition.

Abercrombie was the only student injured when the two boys opened fire with rifles around 1 p.m. Monday outside the North Carolina school.

Arrested and charged in the shooting were Ta’von McLaurin, 18, and a 15-year-old, who are suspected of shooting Abecrombie from about 50 feet away with a .22-caliber Daisy rifle, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff”s office. Both men are in the ninth grade at the school, according to Perry.

Parents of other students at the school speculated that the shooting could have been gang-related, but police have denied those reports.

The close call with the gunmen was not Abercrombie’s first near-death experience. According to ABC affiliate WTVD, she survived a deadly car accident at the age of 8 when a drunk driver smashed head-on into the car she was riding in with a family friend. The friend died.

Abercrombie is reported to be in stable condition. Though the hospital won’t release details about Abercrombie’s condition, Paul Pepe, professor and chairman of emergency medicine at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, said her injuries could be very serious.

“Being shot in the neck is always very concering. Depending on the trajectory of the bullet, for example, it could hit numerous vital structures, from the spinal cord itself to major arteries and veins, or the airway. There is risk for anything from paralysis to exsanguination [bleed to death] to asphyxiation,” Pepe said.

The reports of Abercrombie nodding her head to investigators questions and writing notes are good signs, Pepe added.

Witnesses near the shooting said they heard a popping sound and saw Abercrombie fall over. None of the witnesses said that they saw anyone with a gun, but the suspects were identified through surveillance video, police said.

Questions have been raised in the community about how two students were able to bring a rifle into the school undetected after it was stated by investigators that they believe the two attended class today and brought the rifle onto school property.

Cumberland County Sheriff Earl “Moose” Butler told ABC News affiliate WTVD-TV in Raleigh that he believes they hid the weapon in a pant leg or a shirt arm .

In a voice alternating between desperate and hopeful, Qu Feifei talked to her daughter continuously Tuesday afternoon through a window left ajar at the main military hospital in this southern Chinese city.

“Yueyue, give Mom another chance to love you, OK?” she finally begged, sobbing.

On the other side of the window, two-year-old Wang Yue — affectionately known as Yueyue — lay almost lifeless in bed inside the intensive care unit, with netting around her head and a respirator covering her small face.

The toddler was gravely injured in two successive hit-and-run incidents last Thursday not far from her father’s hardware store in the nearby city of Foshan. When CNN visited the scene Tuesday evening, the blood stains had long gone but two circled numbers on the ground made with black markers clearly indicated the locations of both collisions.

Wang’s condition remained critical, her brain showing little activity despite some earlier subtle movements in the lower body, her mother said.

Gruesome security camera footage of the accidents and the girl, lying in her own blood, ignored by more than a dozen passers-by in a busy market has outraged the nation, stirring an emotional debate on the state of morality in a fast-changing society.

On Sina Weibo, China’s equivalent of Twitter, the story continued to be the No. 1 topic after generating more than 4.5 million posts along with a “stop apathy” online campaign. While the initial video went viral on Chinese Internet, state-run newspapers and television stations have since seized on the story, turning their spotlight on an unlikely hero as well as many villains.

Good Samaritan laws in China

Chen Xianmei, a 58-year-old scavenger who was seen in the video moving Yue to safety, became an instant symbol of understated decency in a nation that many netizens say has become obsessed with climbing up the economic ladder. Camera crews chased Chen for interviews, while local government and businesses fought to award her money.

China: Hit-and-run video sparks outcry

“I didn’t think of anything at the time,” she told local reporters Sunday. “I just wanted to save the girl.”

Chen’s overnight celebrity, however, appeared too overwhelming for her. Her neighbors told CNN Tuesday night she had gone home to the countryside with her son.

Domestic media also tracked down some of the passersby in the video. While several denied seeing Wang lie on the ground, one pedestrian told Yangcheng Evening News that she noticed a girl crying next to a pool of blood.

“I went to the closest store and asked a young man there if she was his child, but he said no,” the newspaper quoted her as saying. “Nobody else dared to touch her, how did I?”

“This is sort of classic bystander effect, where people have a diffusion of responsibility,” Wendy Walsh, a psychologist based in Los Angeles, commented on CNN.

Wang’s mother said in tears that she still couldn’t comprehend the behavior of the passers-by but wanted to focus on the positive.

“Granny Chen represents the best of human nature,” Qu said of her daughter’s rescuer at the scene. “It’s the nicest and most natural side of us.”

Despite rising concerns over China’s declining morality after the story broke, humanity now shines at the Guangzhou hospital where Yue is being treated.

A steady procession of well-wishers surrounds her family throughout the day, offering gifts, money and support.

“I’m so grateful for all the nice people,” Qu said. “Yueyue won’t let them down.

“I know my girl — she’s strong and she’ll wake up again.”

A cashier at a New York fast food restaurant has been charged with felony assault for beating two unruly customers with a metal object during an argument. The women remain hospitalized in serious condition, police said.

The incident occurred at a McDonald’s on West 3rd Street about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The two 24-year-old women entered the store, placed their order and then began arguing with the cashier, 31-year-old Rayon McIntosh, police said.

CNN affiliate WCBS said the altercation began when the cashier questioned a $50 bill the women gave him. They responded by hurling obscenities at him.

A cell phone video shows how the situation quickly escalated.

One of the women curses at the cashier, then reaches over and slaps his face.

The woman then climbs over the counter, sending the cashier running toward the kitchen area. The other woman walks around to join her friend.

The cashier then suddenly reappears with what police described as a metal object and repeatedly hits the women.

Restaurant patrons scream for him to stop, while other employees try to intervene.

The video, one minute and 10 seconds long, shows the cashier hitting the women 10 times as they lay on the floor.

“Stop! Stop!” one woman screams. “Stop it! Call the cops!”

The cashier would pause and begin again every time the women tried to get up.

The two women suffered lacerations to their head and face and were taken to a hospital, police said. CNN affiliates said one had a fractured skull and a broken arm; the other had a deep laceration.

Authorities identified them as Denise Darbeau and Rachael Edwards, and charged them with menacing, criminal trespass and disorderly conduct.

The franchise owner Carmen Paulino told CNN affiliate WABC that the cashier no longer works at the restaurant.

“I am extremely disturbed by the events captured on tape and am concerned for those injured,” Paulino said. “The actions of this individual are unacceptale and not characteristic of my employees.”

McDonald’s too released a statement, saying the franchisee is cooperating with the investigation.

“The violence in this video is alarming and reprehensible,” it said.

September 1, 2011     2:39 pm

A logger who was trapped by logging equipment — alone and without cellphone reception — in the remote Colorado wilderness says he did what he had to do to survive: He used a pocket knife to cut off  his toes, setting himself free.

John Hutt, 61, of Montrose, Colo., has attained celebrity status since the Aug. 19 incident, relaying again and again the harrowing decision he had to make to save his life — and spurring countless “What would you do in that same situation” conversations. Here’s what happened, according to accounts from ABC News and the Associated Press:

Hutt had driven his logging truck into the wilderness in western Colorado to haul off some trees for firewood when a piece of logging equipment fell off the truck, pinning his foot. “Whenever I tried to move it, the pain would get worse,” Hutt was quoted as saying.

He quickly assessed the situation — he was by himself, far from help, with no way to call for help. He said he realized he had little choice. He retrieved his three-inch pocketknife and began removing his own toes, one by one.
There were moments when he couldn’t bear the pain, he said.

“I wanted to do it before I went into shock or dropped the knife or something like that,” he said in those interviews. “I’d cut some and then it’d be pretty painful, so I’d stop and take a breath or two and then keep cutting until I finally got it cut off.”

Once he was free, he used a T-shirt to cut off the bleeding and headed out of the wilderness. He drove to a nearby parking lot, and when he had cell reception, he called for help. An ambulance took him to Montrose Memorial Hospital, the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel reported.

His severed toes were so badly mangled they could not be reattached.

Hutt had this advice for anyone who finds themselves in a tight spot: “I think it’s real important to keep your head and not just panic and start screaming,” he said in the ABC News story. “That isn’t going to do you any good. You need to start figuring the way to get out of the situation like that. And do whatever it takes to do it.”

Hutt’s efforts to save his own life echoed that of climber Aron Ralston. In 2003, the young man amputed his own arm after he was trapped inside a remote Utah canyon by a falling bolder. His tale of survival inspired the Oscar nominated film “127 Hours,” starring James Franco. He also wrote an autobiography, “Between a Rock and a Hard Place.”

Hutt is now recovering, and even joking about the incident. In the ABC story, he passed along this one: “My insurance agent asked me why I called an ambulance. He said I should have called a tow truck.”

PHOTO: Nazish Noorani and husband Kashif Pervaiz

August 18th, 2011

The brother and sister of a young mother who was gunned down while walking in a quiet New Jersey suburb raised questions today about their brother-in-law’s account of the shooting that killed his wife and left him wounded.

“I hope he’s not involved,” Kaleem Noorani, the brother of murder victim Nazish Noorani, told the New Jersey Star-Ledger. He said he wanted the police to thoroughly investigate his brother-in-law Kashif Pervaiz’s statements about the Tuesday night shooting in Boonton, N.J., about 30 miles from New York City.

Noorani’s sister, Lubnar Choudhry, who said she was two houses away when she heard the gunfire, told the New Jersey paper that she didn’t hear a car and “didn’t see anybody run off.”

Noorani, 27, and Pervaiz, 26, who are Muslim, had broken the daily Ramadan fast at her sister’s house and were walking a few blocks in the leafy neighborhood of single-family houses to her father’s when shooting broke out. Their 3-year-old son, who was in a stroller, was unharmed, and the couple’s other child was with relatives.

Law-enforcement authorities said the killing was “targeted” and not a hate crime.

“The shooting clearly appears to be target-specific. … There is not a continuing danger to the general public,” Morris County prosecutor Robert Bianchi said in a statement. No further information was available from prosecutors or the Boonton Police Department, and no arrests have been made.

Choudhry said that her sister’s marriage had recently seemed rocky. “I think he upset her,” she told the Star-Ledger.

And a neighbor in East Boston, where the couple had an apartment, told the paper that he had seen Pervaiz a few weeks ago with a woman who was not his wife. “He was divorced or getting divorced. One time I heard them yelling,” Raul Santamaria said.

Noorani, a native of Pakistan, and Pervaiz, originally from Brooklyn, lived in that New York City borough but were visiting her family in Boonton, which has a long-established Pakistani community. Noorani was dressed in traditional Pakistani clothing, according to the Associated Press.

Pervaiz, who is recovering at a local hospital, runs a construction firm, Riyaan Developers, which is listed as operating in Brooklyn and East Boston. A woman who answered the phone at the company hung up when asked about the Boonton shooting.

Though family members told the AP that Pervaiz was an engineering graduate student at Harvard University, a spokesman for Harvard said, “We have not immediately been able to locate a record for a student by that name.”

Noorani’s funeral will be held Friday at the Jam E-Masjid Islamic Center in Boonton. At the center, Zeenat Mannan said everyone is shocked. “It’s never happened in Boonton. Everyone’s so sad.”

A gold medal-winning Paralympian is in a critical condition after being
injured in a hit-and-run incident.

Cyclist Simon Richardson was riding his bike near Bridgend when it is thought
he was struck by a van.

The 44-year-old was taken by air ambulance to hospital, where his wife said
he was in a “critical but stable condition”.

A 59-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and
police are appealing for witnesses.

Inspector Tony McAlinden said: “He was apparently struck by a small white van
travelling in the same direction.

“The van did not stop and continued east along the A48 in the general
direction of Cowbridge.”

“Police would like to speak to any person who witnessed the collision, or may
have been travelling between Cowbridge and Bridgend on the A48 and saw a white
small van leaving the area.”

Richardson won two gold and a silver medal at the Beijing games in 2008 and
was awarded the MBE in 2009.

He used his bike to help recover from severe injuries he sustained in a
cycling accident in 2001.

Ten years ago Richardson was struck by a vehicle travelling at 60mph, which
shattered his leg and broke his back in two places, causing him to lose all
feeling in his left-hand side.

The Paralympic champion used a specially adapted bike powered by his right
leg to help his rehabilitation and then to compete.

:: Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact the South
Wales Police roads unit in Gwaelod y Garth, Cardiff, on 02920 633 438 or
Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Singer Gavin DeGraw has been hospitalized after he was reportedly attacked by a group on a New York City street and suffered a broken nose and facial cuts, according to news reports.

The cause of the attack, which occurred in the city’s East Village, is unknown. A representative for the 34-year-old DeGraw issued a statement saying, “Gavin DeGraw was assaulted late Sunday night and taken to the emergency room at Bellevue Hospital by ambulance. He is currently under observation.”

Starting July 22, Gavin went on tour with Maroon 5 and Train, and was preparing to host a live webcast on Wednesday, according to his website. He has now cancelled a planned concert Tuesday in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

DeGraw met mainstream success when his single “I Don’t Want to Be” was picked as the theme song for the CW show “One Tree Hill.” His self-titled 2008 album reached as high as No. 7 on the Billboard 200, and he has a new album, “Sweeter,” due out in September.

LOS ANGELES | Fri Jul 22, 2011 8:38pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – The 13-year-old son of former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and his estranged wife, Maria Shriver, was injured in a beach accident days ago, leading to a “very scary week” for the family, they said in a statement on Friday.

The statement gave few details of the mishap involving Christopher Schwarzenegger, the youngest of the couple’s four children, nor did it say how badly he was hurt.

But the celebrity news website TMZ.com reported the youth was severely injured when hit by a large wave while surfing or boogie-boarding last weekend in Malibu, suffering multiple broken bones and a collapsed lung.

According to TMZ, the boy initially was hospitalized in intensive care, but his condition has since been upgraded.

His parents said their son is expected to make a full recovery.

“While it has been a very scary week, Christopher is surrounded by his family and friends,” the couple’s statement said.

“We want to sincerely thank the paramedics and lifeguards who responded so swiftly, as well as the doctors, nurses, emergency room and hospital staff who have cared for our son. They have been extraordinary to him and to us.”

Shriver filed for divorce from Schwarzenegger on July 1, weeks after the Austrian-born former bodybuilder and film star publicly admitted to fathering a child out of wedlock with a member of the family’s household staff more than a decade earlier. Schwarzenegger and Shriver had separated in May.

Shriver, a daughter of the Kennedy political dynasty, gave up her career as a network television journalist when she became California’s first lady at the start of Schwarzenegger’s two terms as governor. She has requested spousal support and joint custody of all their children.

Schwarzenegger’s attorney filed court papers on Wednesday seeking suspension of court-ordered spousal support to Shriver and requesting that she pay her own legal fees, according to legal documents obtained by Reuters.

Two of Christopher’s siblings, Katherine, 21, and Patrick, 17, posted messages of support for their younger brother on Twitter on Friday.

“This kid is strongest kid I ever seen (sic). Keep praying,” wrote Patrick, while Katherine wrote: “He’s a tough little guy and getting better!”

Dez Heal, 13, of Lynchburg, Va., was rushed to the hospital with a bamboo stick impaled his neck.

Dez had been playing a Ninja game with friends and “decided to put the bamboo stick in the back of my shirt,” he told ABC affiliate WSET-TV.

“I guess when he jumped, the stick must have went forward,” Nicholas Blencowe, Dez’s friend and Ninja partner, told the station. “And when he hit the ground, the stick went in his neck.”

Dez’s father, David Heal, described to WSET how the stick pierced Dez’s neck and came out about about 3 inches behind his ear. Heal called 911.

It might seem surprising, but when emergency room physicians see an impaling injury like Dez’s, they don’t rush to yank the piercing object out — they leave it in as they take the time to appraise the patient.

“It sounds counterintuitive, but it’s important to leave the object in place,” says Dr. Abi Mehrotra, assistant medical director at the University of North Carolina Department of Emergency Medicine. Even if an object is impaled in the eye, don’t pull it out, he warns. “You don’t know what the damage is to the structure underneath. The object may be stopping the bleeding that may be happening.”

Dr. Paul Pepe, chairman of emergency medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, agrees. ” You don’t pull it out. You do nothing” initially, he explained, because of the risk involved in extracting it.

“If it is going through an artery, if you pull it out, the leak may explode,” says Pepe.

Luckily for Dez, the stick did not hit an artery.

Pepe went on to describe the deliberate, painstaking ABC protocol — airway, breathing, circulation — that’s followed for an impaling injury like Dez’s.

“There could be abnormal breathing if the phrenic nerve is hit,” he said, referring to the nerve that begins in the neck and supports the movement of the diaphragm. Doctors have to ensure that there is not a loss of circulation, and that the patient is not bleeding out.

A patient might be asked to wiggle his toes to see whether there is a spinal cord injury, Pepe explains.

Doctors use imaging, including CT scans, and possibly angiograms, to further determine the nature of the injury.

Only after a meticulous assessment do doctors consider cutting off the ends of the object and moving to “a very careful surgical removal,” Pepe says.

By appraising the injury beforehand, a hospital can make sure it has the appropriate expert on hand — such as a vascular surgeon if an artery has been struck, Mehrotra says.

Such accidents — often shown dramatically on TV, especially in a famous “Grey’s Anatomy” episode in which two patients were impaled on the same pole — “aren’t as rare as we would like to think,” according to Mehrotra. He says he frequently sees fishing hooks impaled in skin.

Larger, more serious impalements happen to workers who fall on the job, and to those caught in tornadoes, Pepe says.

As a result he says, “We’ve got the drill down.”

10 Story Building

A two-year-old Chinese girl left unattended fell 10 stories from her family’s apartment window and survived after being caught by a woman passing by, state media reported Sunday.

The toddler was in critical condition Sunday with internal bleeding and other unspecified injuries while the woman who saved her suffered a broken arm, China Central Television and the Xinhua News Agency said.

The girl, named Zhang Fangyu but known by the nickname Niu Niu, was in the care of her grandmother Saturday afternoon when the older woman left the 10th-floor apartment outside the eastern city of Hangzhou to run an errand, CCTV said.

Neighbors saw Niu Niu dangling from the apartment window for several minutes, Xinhua said, and when the girl fell, Wu Juping “kicked off her high-heeled shoes” and ran to catch the child.

“It was so urgent. I saw her when she was about to fall and rushed there, and after tens of seconds she fell off,” CCTV quoted Wu as saying.

A 31-year-old mother, Wu told CCTV that when she saw the hanging girl she thought of her own seven-month-old son who had once fallen from a high chair and cut his mouth: “I thought to myself ‘I should stretch my arms to her. Because I am right here, I must get her.’ Then I made it. I caught her in my arms.”

The impact knocked Wu out and sent her crumbling to the ground along with breaking her left arm, the reports said.

CCTV quoted an unidentified doctor at the Children’s Hospital of Zhejiang Hospital as saying that a scan showed no damage to Niu Niu’s brain but that the girl’s abdomen was swollen in a sign of possible injury to organs.

Two police dogs were found dead on Sunday after being locked inside an unventilated car on a hot day in London. An investigation has now been launched to determine how the dogs died.

An officer (reportedly named Sergeant Ian Craven) is said to have forgotten about the Belgian Malanois and German Shepherd, and left them in the car parked outside a London suburb training center. According to Reuters, the temperature was close to 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Toronto Star reports that once officers were aware of the two dogs in the vehicle, they smashed the windows, pulled out the animals and doused them with water. Although they were rushed to an emergency vet, they both died.

Commander Bob Broadhurst stated, “Two dogs have died that shouldn’t have, the tragic circumstances of which will be fully and thoroughly investigated.”

Toronto Star alleges that when Sergeant Ian Craven learned the two dogs had died, he was devastated and attempted suicide by cutting his wrists, but the police have not confirmed this claim. A Scotland Yard spokesman told Sky News that a police officer left his duty posting, and was treated as a missing person. When he was found, he had a hand injury and was taken to a hospital. Toronto Star reports Craven is a 30-year veteran of the force, and in 2004, he allegedly left a spaniel in a car, which also died.

According to Sky News, a spokeswoman from the U.K.’s largest dog welfare charity, Dogs Trust, said, “Whilst the cause of death is still to be determined, the charity would like to remind dog owners and police dog handlers that leaving your dog in a car can prove rapidly fatal, particularly during a heatwave.”

The suspected cause of death for these police dogs is sadly common. Reuters reports that just last year, a Nottinghamshire police officer was given a six-month conditional discharge and fined after two German shepherds died in his car.

Patch reports that, according to a Stanford study, a 72-degree Fahrenheit day can become a sweltering 116 degrees inside a car within an hour. United Animal Nations offers this chart demonstrating how in-car temperatures are affected by the weather over time. If a dog is exposed to heat for a prolonged period, they can reportedly suffer from nerve damage, heart problems, liver issues and death.

If you see a dog in a parked car on a hot day, consider searching for the owner, alerting a nearby store, or calling local authorities. Some estimates suggest a dog can die of heatstroke in just 15 minutes — every second counts.

The best advice for pet owners is to quite simply never leave a dog parked in a car. But Janet Tobiassen, a doctor of veterinary medicine, also offers the following advice: If you do need to run an errand, park in the shade and have a passenger remain in the car with the windows open. If you are alone, use drive-ins and pet-friendly stores. If those aren’t options? Leave your dog at home. Better home than dead.

Michigan Crash

06/25/11 05:35 PM ET

A standout Indiana high school basketball player with the promise of playing at the University of Michigan is fighting for his life after surviving the second plane crash of his young life.

Austin Hatch, 16, of Fort Wayne, Ind., was in critical condition Saturday in a northern Michigan hospital after the Friday evening crash that killed his father, Dr. Stephen Hatch, and his stepmother, Kim. Austin and his pilot father had survived a 2003 crash that killed Austin’s mother and two siblings.

The teen was “the apple of his dad’s eye,” and Stephen Hatch took great delight and pride in his son’s athletic accomplishments, Dr. G. David Bojrab, a colleague and close friend of the father’s, told The Associated Press.

Austin, a junior at Canterbury School in Fort Wayne, Ind., committed earlier this month to play basketball at Michigan, where his father and mother went to school.

He told the Journal Gazette of Fort Wayne for a story published last week that he talked to Michigan coach John Beilein by phone and accepted a full-ride scholarship. It was the first day that NCAA coaches could call recruits for the 2013 class, the newspaper said.

“It was a very special moment for me,” Hatch told the newspaper. “There was no reason to wait. There’s nothing I don’t like about their program, and I couldn’t turn it down.”  Canterbury coach Dan Kline, who spoke with Michigan coaches before the offer, told the newspaper it was Austin’s “dream” to play for Michigan.

“They didn’t come right out and say it, but they told me he was a top priority in the state of Indiana,” he said. “They kept dropping hints.”

Bojrab said the Hatches were flying to their summer home on Walloon Lake in Michigan’s northwestern Lower Peninsula, where Stephen Hatch and his brothers all owned property, when his single-engine plane flew into a garage near the Charlevoix Municipal Airport. It was the same home Stephen Hatch and the family were returning from nearly eight years ago when they crashed in Indiana.

“He was such a strong proponent of flying and teaching people to fly. … I think he felt compelled to continue his passion,” said Bojrab, a partner with Hatch in Pain Management Associates in Fort Wayne.

“He felt compelled to show people that accidents do happen. He didn’t want people to look in the other direction.”

A 2005 federal report on the September 2003 crash found inaccurate preflight planning resulted in the plane not having enough fuel. The National Transportation Safety Board determined a utility pole the airplane hit during its forced landing, a low ceiling and dark night also contributed to the crash.

Bojrab said his friend disputed the report’s findings, believing equipment failure caused the crash.

“When he crashed, it was an inferno, which makes you wonder how he could have been out of gas,” Bojrab said.

Hatch saved Austin, but his other children — Lindsay, 11, and Ian, 5 — died along with his wife, Julie, 38.

“His wife and two children were in flames and he was never able to reach them,” Bojrab said. “Steve reached over to his son who was sitting in front with him and tossed him out the window to save his life.”

Beilein said in a statement that the university was saddened to hear about the tragedy affecting the Hatches. “Austin needs as much support right now as possible and I know he will be in the thoughts and prayers of the Michigan family during this difficult time,” he said.

Canterbury School said in a statement it released Saturday to “keep Austin and his family in your thoughts and prayers.”

Bojrab said Stephen Hatch had planned to go to Spain to celebrate his parents’ 50th wedding anniversary with the rest of his family, but canceled the trip to spend time with Austin and his adult stepchildren.

“Steve was a very big family man,” Bojrab said.

Another of his passions was Smith Field Airport, a small, historic airport near Fort Wayne. Bojrab said Hatch led a campaign several years ago to save it and bought the Smith Field Service Center and its flight school.

“He saved the property from being developed commercially,” Bojrab said, adding that Hatch was instrumental in getting it on the National Register of Historic Places.

NTSB spokesman Keith Holloway said investigators were on the scene Saturday and would be examining the aircraft, interviewing witnesses and requesting air traffic control communications and radar data. He expected a preliminary report within 10 days and a final report determining a cause within 18 months.

A fake Wild West gun battle staged for charity in South Dakota turned bloody when an elderly woman and two men in the audience were shot with real bullets.

Carrol Knutson, 65, of Birchwood, Minn., told the Tuesday edition of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune that she was watching the summer attraction with her husband and grandson when she was shot in the leg.

“The last gun battle was just concluding, and the next thing I knew, there was blood spewing out of my leg,” she said. “It was extremely painful, worse than anything I can imagine.”

Police said they were investigating how live ammunition came to replace the blanks that should have been used Friday in the Hill City, S.D., re-enactment — one of many choreographed by volunteer cowboys from the Dakota Wild Bunch re-enactors to raise funds for the Children’s Miracle Network.

Lieutenant Marty Graves, from the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, said, “Blank ammo just goes bang. There shouldn’t be any injury. There are a bunch of theories, and we’re just going to have to work through this thing. It’s a horrible situation, and we hope to get to the bottom of it. We’re not ruling anything out.”

Doctors who examined the lead residue in Knutson’s shattered fibula believe that she was hit with a .45-caliber bullet.

Jose Pruneda, 52, of Alliance, Neb., and John Ellis, 48, of South Connellsville, Pa., also were injured.

“I got shot in the forearm, and it went through the other side of my elbow,” Ellis told the Rapid City Journal. “I had surgery around midnight [local time] Friday to remove bone and lead fragments.”

Thu Jun 23 11:42am EDT

Here’s what separates the pros from the
amateurs in the world of sports mascots: After being hit with a foul ball at a
minor league game on Wednesday, the Phillie Phanatic didn’t drop to the ground,
write around in pain or break character in any way.

Instead,  the Phanatic hammed up the beaning in usual Phanatic fashion — and
only then left the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs game against Indianapolis
and headed to the hospital.

Though you can’t see the ball actually hitting the Phanatic, it’s reported to
have hit the popular green mascot square in the neck — or right where the head
of Tom Burgoyne, the man who
has played the Phanatic
since 1993, is actually located.

With the Phillies on the road in St. Louis, Burgoyne hit the road to
Allentown, Pa., for a midweek visit to the team’s Triple-A affiliate. But lest
you think his good deed will totally be punished, the good news is that he was
treated and released from a nearby hospital with only minimal damage.

Said Burgoyne on his
Facebook page
:

The Phanatic is fine. He took one off the neck last night it the Iron Pigs
game. Since we’re soooo close, I felt his pain and have a nice golf ball-sized
knot just above my eye. Bring on the A’s this weekend — the Phanatic will be
ready!

It’s good to know that the Phanatic will return to Philly and be able to
welcome Connie Mack’s old team back into town. But the job of a mascot will
continue to be a dangerous job for Burgoyne. Not only does he have to face the
ever-present threat of fan
lawsuits
, the Morning Call reports that his
nose was broken and his eye socket was shattered
when he was hit by a ball
thrown by an Atlanta Braves
pitcher in 2009.

A van full of church members heading home from a Bible class veered off a
northeast Louisiana highway and hit a culvert, killing two adults and two
children and sending seven others to a hospital, authorities said Thursday.

The van crashed Wednesday night on Louisiana Highway 587 in West Carroll
Parish, said Louisiana State Police Trooper Mark Dennis. The van’s driver,
30-year-old Joey W. McKan, and one other person were hospitalized with
life-threatening injuries.

Portia Thornton, 53, died at the scene along with two of her daughters,
Kaitlyn Thornton, 19, and Brittany Thornton, 12. Emma Adams, 4, also was
killed.

The van belonged to the New Zion Baptist Church, about eight miles outside
Oak Grove, said Kenneth Green, chief deputy of the West Carroll Parish Sheriff’s
Department. About 11,000 people live in West Carroll Parish.

“It’s just a little country church,” Green said. “They were taking people
home from Bible school at the church.”

Kelly Coleman, the vice president of the Guarantee Bank and Trust in Oak
Grove, was at his church about 200 yards from the crash site when it happened.
He said he heard the crash and quickly drove to the scene after getting a phone
call from a friend.

“When I saw how bad it was I drove back to church and told them to start
praying,” Coleman said. “Then I got my wife, who has nursing experience, and
went back.”

The 15-passenger van vaulted the ditch and hit the culvert, and the rear end
of the van flipped over the front before it came to rest on its wheels, Coleman
said.

Coleman, who said he knew Portia Thornton personally, said another of
Thornton’s daughters and a son, 20-year-old Jake Thornton also were in the van.
The State Police did not release the names of two 16-year-olds and a male whose
age had not been determined, saying the department would not identify juvenile
survivors.

Aaron Coats, 21, and a 6-year-old were among the injured passengers who were
taken to hospitals from Monroe to Jackson, Miss.

The accident remains under investigation. The cause was unclear, and there
was no indication the van was speeding, Dennis said. Routine toxicology tests
were pending, though drugs and alcohol also were not suspected.

Sheriff Jerry Philley said the van wrecked on a stretch of road that was
straight and flat.

Calls to the church went unanswered Thursday morning. The pastor, Greg Dunn,
did not immediately return a call.

Coleman said the wreck had stunned the small community but had also pulled
residents together.

“I’m pleased to tell you that we live in the Bible belt,” he said. “I believe
we have more churches per square mile than any other parish, and they are
already offering assistance and planning services.”

Girl aged 10 impaled on railings in Sunderland

It took rescuers more than two hours to cut the girl free

A 10-year old Wearside girl has had emergency surgery
after becoming impaled on metal railings.

Caitlin Brown fell from a tree and landed on railings near her home in
Gainsborough Square, Sunderland.

One of the railings pierced her stomach and shoulder and it took rescuers
more than two hours to cut her free. They praised her courage.

She was taken to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) with part of the
railing still in her body.

Keith Trotter of Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: “She is an
incredibly brave young lady who showed extraordinary courage.

“Her parents were there throughout so that helped her, but she was very, very
brave indeed.”

Weight supported

Mr Trotter said the rescue operation was delicate for the three crews in
attendance.

He added: “Due to the nature of the impalement it was a very difficult
operation in as much as the crews had to support her weight throughout.

“The little girl could not be laid down so the crews had to carry her in the
same position all the way to the ambulance which was about 250ft away. That was
the closest it could get.”

The railing has now been removed and the girl is said to be responding well
to treatment.

Turkish singer Ibrahim Tatlises in Ankara (7 March 2011)
14 March 2011 Last updated at 07:53 ET

Turkish singer Ibrahim Tatlises, famous also in Greece and across the Middle East, has been shot and seriously wounded in an attack in Istanbul.

He was shot in the head by unidentified men after midnight on Saturday and left in a critical condition, reports said.

Mr Tatlises, 58, had just left the offices of private Turkish channel Beyaz TV with his spokeswoman, who was also hit.

They were both taken to hospital and underwent surgery.

The singer, known as Emperor and one of Turkey’s biggest stars, had just left a TV studio shortly after midnight, and was about to leave by car when he was attacked.

According to media reports, the gunmen, carrying Kalashnikov rifles, escaped in a car.

No group has yet claimed involvement in the attack, although newspapers said Mr Tatlises had been shot in the leg in 1990 and had escaped unharmed in another incident in 1998.

Doctors treating him at Maslak Acibadem hospital said a bullet had entered the rear of his skull and had passed out through the front, Anatolia news agency reported.

“His life is still in danger but the situation has improved since he arrived at hospital,” chief surgeon Caglar Cuhadaroglu told Anatolia after a four-hour operation.

His spokeswoman was said to be in a stable condition after an operation on her neck.

Ibrahim Tatlises, who is of Kurdish origin and from the south-eastern city of Sanliurfa, has recorded more than 30 albums and has acted in numerous films. He also hosts a TV show.

As well as being a major singing star, Mr Tatlises is a well known businessman with interests in Kurdish areas of northern Iraq.

Lara Logan, CBS correspondent

Wednesday 16 February 2011 03.23 GMT

[Lara Logan of CBS News, pictured in Cairo’s Tahrir Square shortly before she was attacked on February 11.]

CBS News journalist Lara Logan is recovering in hospital this week after being violently attacked and sexually assaulted by a mob in Egypt‘s Tahrir Square on Friday, according to a statement by CBS.

Amid the celebrations on the night of Hosni Mubarak’s resignation, Logan was reporting on the scenes in Tahrir Square for the news programme 60 Minutes when the South African-born journalist, her camera crew and security staff were overwhelmed by what the US television network described as “a dangerous element … a mob of more than 200 people whipped into frenzy”.

“In the crush of the mob, she was separated from her crew. She was surrounded and suffered a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating before being saved by a group of women and an estimated 20 Egyptian soldiers,” CBS said in its statement released on Tuesday evening.

“She reconnected with the CBS team, returned to her hotel and returned to the United States on the first flight the next morning. She is currently in the hospital recovering.”

Logan joined CBS in 2002, after a television news career that included a spell at GMTV covering the invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, and is a veteran of reporting from warzones including Iraq and Kosovo.

CBS’s chief foreign affairs correspondent, Logan had previously been detained by the Egyptian military for a day, as part of the Mubarak regime’s crackdown on foreign journalists.

Logan serves on the board of the Committee to Protect Journalists, which documented 140 attacks on journalists in Egypt during the protests this month.

“We have seen Lara’s compassion at work while helping journalists who have faced brutal aggression while doing their jobs. She is a brilliant, courageous and committed reporter. Our thoughts are with Lara as she recovers,” said Paul Steiger, chairman of the committee.

CBS said it will make no further comment. “Logan and her family respectfully request privacy at this time,” the network said in its statement.

As reports of the sexual assault of reporter Lara Logan circulated around the globe, many Egyptians have come forward to express their disgust at the incident in which Ms Logan was also badly beaten by members of the crowd who were celebrating the ousting of their former president Hosni Mubarak.

The 39 year old South African born Chief Foreign Correspondant for CBS News was attacked during a terrifying ordeal in Cairo’s Tehrir Square, by a mob of around 200 people after being separated from her colleagues whilst she was covering the crowd’s celebrations.

The ex swimwear model and former GMTV journalist was forced to undergo several frightening experiences throughout the day before her attack.  In the hours preceeding the outrage,  Egyptian authorities escorted Ms Logan and her crew at gunpoint whilst making suggestions that the group were not in the country for the purpose of peaceful reporting.  The actions of Egyptian police in this matter remain as yet unexplained.

Ms Logan was eventually saved by a group of soldiers and women who intervened and is currently recovering from her injuries in hospital.

In a week which has witnessed near constant marches and gatherings of huge crowds in Cairo, several journalists have been injured, some stabbed and others punched to the ground by frenzied mobs.

One Egyptian woman referring to the assault said “This is a problem which has been ongoing in Egypt for the last four years and it doesn’t seem to be going away”.

Turbulent: Sarah Coyle had a three-year affair with Patrick Mercer

February 6th, 2011

Tory MP Patrick Mercer ‘kicked to the floor’ by his ex mistress

Tory MP Patrick Mercer has had police panic button installed in his office after he was allegedly kicked in the groin, punched and kicked on the floor by his former mistress, Sarah Coyle, who works as a House of Commons secretary.

Former Army officer Mercer has had closed-circuit television cameras installed in his Commons office, carries a panic alarm linked to the nearest police station and locks himself in his office in Parliament because of his alleged fear of another incident.

The MP’s ex-lover, mother-of-one Coyle, has reportedly been told by police to stay away from the MP.

Coyle has dismissed the allegations and both parties are said to have reported the other’s conduct to police.

“Mrs Coyle kicked Mr Mercer in the groin and then kicked and punched him as he lay on the floor,” the Daily Mail quoted one well-placed insider as saying.

“Mr Mercer didn’t raise a hand but he was terrified,” the insider added.

A Tory MP has claimed he was kicked in the groin, then punched and kicked on the floor in his office by his former mistress, who works as a House of Commons secretary.

Former Army officer Patrick Mercer has had closed-circuit television cameras installed in his Commons office, carries a panic alarm linked to the nearest police station and locks himself in his office in Parliament because of his alleged fear of another incident.

The MP’s ex-lover – mother-of-one Sarah Coyle – has reportedly been told by police to stay away from the MP.

But The Mail on Sunday understands that Mr Mercer is considering applying for a restraining order to protect himself.

Mrs Coyle denies the allegations and both parties are said to have reported the other’s conduct to police.

The extraordinary claims are the latest episode in the turbulent three-year on-off affair between married Mr Mercer, 54, and Mrs Coyle, 44.

It came to a head in an explosive confrontation beneath the shadow of Big Ben in Portcullis House, where MPs have their offices. Precisely what happened is not clear.

But one well-placed insider said: ‘Mrs Coyle kicked Mr Mercer in the groin and then kicked and punched him as he lay on the floor.

Mr Mercer didn’t raise a hand but he was terrified.’

The Pole, who recently topped the testing timesheets in Valencia, was driving a Skoda Fabia in the Super2000 category of the Rally Ronde di Andora when his car overturned violently off the road.

Kubica’s co-driver Jakub Gerber posted “I’m OK” on his Facebook page after the accident but Kubica was taken to hospital by helicopter.

According to the Savona News, Kubica was conscious after the accident but was rushed to hospital with what they called ‘several fractures.’

Some reports in Poland suggest he has fractured his wrist in a couple of places.
