A former U.S. Army Ranger and Occupy Oakland protester was in intensive care on Friday after a veterans group said he was beaten by police during clashes with demonstrators this week.

The veteran, identified as Kayvan Sabeghi, was the second former American serviceman during the past two weeks to be badly hurt in confrontations between anti-Wall Street protesters and police in Oakland.

The group Iraq Veterans Against the War said Sabeghi was detained during disturbances that erupted late on Wednesday in downtown Oakland and was charged with resisting arrest and remaining present at the place of a riot.

Highland General Hospital confirmed that Sabeghi was a patient in the intensive care unit there.

Brian Kelly, who co-owns a brew pub with Sabeghi, said his business partner served as an Army Ranger in Iraq and Afghanistan. He said Sabeghi told him he was arrested and beaten by a group of policemen as he was leaving the protest to go home.

“He told me he was in the hospital with a lacerated spleen and that the cops had jumped him,” Kelly said. “They put him in jail, and he told them he was injured, and they denied him medical treatment for about 18 hours.”

The Oakland Police Department did not immediately return calls seeking comment. Sabeghi’s name was listed by the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office as one of more than 100 people arrested that night.

The veterans group said in a statement that police struck Sabeghi with nightsticks on his hands, shoulders, ribs and back, and that in addition to a lacerated spleen he suffered from internal bleeding.

Clashes between police and demonstrators broke out in the early morning hours of Thursday in downtown Oakland following a day of mostly peaceful rallies and marches citywide against economic inequality and police brutality.

The Port of Oakland was forced to shut down during those demonstrations, sparked in part by the severe injury of another former serviceman, ex-Marine Scott Olsen, during a confrontation with police last week.

Olsen’s injury became a rallying cry for the anti-Wall Street protest movement nationwide.

In a crime that has shocked New Yorkers, two 12-year-olds allegedly dropped a
shopping cart from four stories up, letting it fall on the head of a woman
shopping for Halloween treats for underprivileged kids. She’s now clinging to
life.

Marion Salmon Hedges, 47, a successful Manhattan
real estate agent, was at an East Harlem mall along with her 13-year-old son
when the incident occurred Sunday, police said. Her son was not injured but was
hysterical after witnessing the incident, according to the New York Post.

Mother and son were walking through a breezeway at a popular shopping area
that includes, four stories up, a skyway that helps customers get to their
destination. That was the perch the kids allegedly used to toss a shopping cart
up and over the railing as a kind of prank, according to media reports.

Earlier in the day, the same kids were allegedly throwing drinks down on
unsuspecting passers-by. Later, they moved on to more deadly objects.

At one point, the cart became stuck on the railing. “A 14-year-old buddy
urged the duo to give it up,” the Post reported, quoting a source. But one of
the suspects “was so determined to make sure it went over the edge that he
allegedly pushed it again. It reportedly hit a sign on the way down, and then
struck the 47-year-old mother of two as she stood at a kiosk to pay for parking
outside Costco with her son, Dayton,” the Post reported.

Police sources told the Post that the two kids taken into custody later
laughed and joked about the incident.

A doctor who happened to be at the scene performed CPR and revived Hedges.
She was in critical but stable condition at New York City’s Harlem Hospital,
lying in a medically induced coma.

The Daily News reported that Hedges is an active volunteer at the Stanley M.
Isaacs Neighborhood Center — which serves the suspects’ neighborhood — and was
buying Halloween candy for the center when she was struck. She is also active in
her church and was named Outstanding Volunteer of 2006 by the Junior League,
according to the Post.

The boys are each being charged with assault and criminal possession of a
deadly weapon, a spokeswoman for the New York Police Department told the L.A.
Times.

The case has already triggered debate, with some saying law enforcement
should come down hard on the two suspects; others say the real blame lies with a
lack of security and safety fencing to keep items from hitting customers below,
either intentionally or unintentionally.

November 1, 2011     9:04 am

NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick suffered a broken clavicle and rib, and his
wife Linda had cuts and bruises, in the hard landing of their team’s business
jet Monday night in Key West, Fla., Hendrick Motorsports said in an updated
statement Tuesday.

The team initially said only there were no serious
injuries when the Gulfstream G150 ran off the runway at Key West International
Airport because of braking problems when it was landing.

A photograph released by the Monroe County sheriff’s office showed the jet
intact after it came to a stop, but with one wing partially submerged in a body
of water.

The Hendricks and the two pilots aboard the plane were taken to Lower Keys
Medical Center and released, the team said. “All four have safely returned to
North Carolina,” the team said.

Hendrick, 62, is one of the most successful owners in the NASCAR Sprint Cup
Series. His drivers are reigning champion Jimmie Johnson, four-time champion
Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Mark Martin.

“It was a real big scare. Very frightening to
hear,” Earnhardt told reporters in Las Vegas, where he was attending
the annual SEMA show, which showcases specialty automotive equipment, according
to Associated Press. “I’m very glad that he and everybody appears to be OK.”

A Canadian aid worker was shot and another man killed while driving through a suburb of Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Francklin Guerrier and the driver were attacked by people on a motorcycle, according to Radio-Canada correspondent in Haiti. The driver was killed.

Guerrier, a Quebec retired lawyer, was shot in the collar bone and is recovering, under police guard, in Trinité hospital, his brother Eric Piérre told Radio-Canada. .

He was travelling in a car with some family members and driver Noel Meriland when at least one assailant on a motorcycle opened fire at 6:30 a.m.Friday local time. Meriland was killed.

Guerrier is on the board of the Montreal-based organization Ayiti Dwa Moun, which means Haiti Human Rights. The organization has been around as a Canadian registered federal corporation since 1993 but hasn’t filed an annual return for the last three years and is facing dissolution.

The motive for the attack is unknown.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the Guerrier family as they recover from this tragic incident,” International Co-operation Minister Bev Oda said in a statement.

“I am glad to hear M. Guerrier is in stable condition. I offer condolences to the family of his friend. Our government is working with consular officials to ensure the family receives support in this time of need.”

Occupy Oakland organizers are planning to hold a peaceful vigil Wednesday afternoon for Scott Olsen, 24, a former Marine who was injured during protests Tuesday night.

Olsen served two tours of duty in Iraq and was hit in the head Tuesday by what may have been a tear gas canister, according to Dottie Guy, Bay Area chapter president of Iraq Veterans Against the War. (Warning: The above YouTube video, which shows Olsen, contains profanity at the end.)

Guy said her group saw a Twitter photo of a bleeding Olsen and tracked him down at Oakland’s Highland Hospital, where he is in serious but stable condition. [Updated at 4:05 p.m.: Hospital spokesman Curt Olsen (no relation) said his condition was upgraded Wednesday afternoon from critical to “critical but stable.”]

The group issued a news release saying that he sustained a skull fracture “after being shot in the head with a police projectile.”

Keith Shannon, who deployed with Olsen to Iraq said in a statement: “Scott was marching with the 99% because he felt corporations and banks had too much control over our government, and that they weren’t being held accountable for their role in the economic downturn, which caused so many people to lose their jobs and their homes.”

Interim Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan said Tuesday night that the tear gas and other measures were necessary because some in the crowd were throwing bottles, paint, eggs and other objects at officers.

Tragic: Local sources identified the victim as 15-year-old Catilyn Abercrombie. Police say she is in a stable condition after surgery

Oct. 25, 2011

A 15-year-old girl who was shot in the neck while eating lunch outside of her Cape Fear high school wrote a note from her hospital bed today to tell her supporters that she loved them.

Catilyn Abercrombie, who was shot by two classmates was described as a “fighter” by her mother, who asked the public for their prayers for her daughter, according to assistant superintendent Teresa Perry. A Facebook page, “Prayers for Catilyn Abercrombie,” had nearly 2,000 fans today.

“She has written that she loves everyone on a piece of a paper,” Perry said, though she didn’t have further details about the girl’s condition.

Abercrombie was the only student injured when the two boys opened fire with rifles around 1 p.m. Monday outside the North Carolina school.

Arrested and charged in the shooting were Ta’von McLaurin, 18, and a 15-year-old, who are suspected of shooting Abecrombie from about 50 feet away with a .22-caliber Daisy rifle, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff”s office. Both men are in the ninth grade at the school, according to Perry.

Parents of other students at the school speculated that the shooting could have been gang-related, but police have denied those reports.

The close call with the gunmen was not Abercrombie’s first near-death experience. According to ABC affiliate WTVD, she survived a deadly car accident at the age of 8 when a drunk driver smashed head-on into the car she was riding in with a family friend. The friend died.

Abercrombie is reported to be in stable condition. Though the hospital won’t release details about Abercrombie’s condition, Paul Pepe, professor and chairman of emergency medicine at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, said her injuries could be very serious.

“Being shot in the neck is always very concering. Depending on the trajectory of the bullet, for example, it could hit numerous vital structures, from the spinal cord itself to major arteries and veins, or the airway. There is risk for anything from paralysis to exsanguination [bleed to death] to asphyxiation,” Pepe said.

The reports of Abercrombie nodding her head to investigators questions and writing notes are good signs, Pepe added.

Witnesses near the shooting said they heard a popping sound and saw Abercrombie fall over. None of the witnesses said that they saw anyone with a gun, but the suspects were identified through surveillance video, police said.

Questions have been raised in the community about how two students were able to bring a rifle into the school undetected after it was stated by investigators that they believe the two attended class today and brought the rifle onto school property.

Cumberland County Sheriff Earl “Moose” Butler told ABC News affiliate WTVD-TV in Raleigh that he believes they hid the weapon in a pant leg or a shirt arm .

8:51 PM EST    Tuesday October 18, 2011

In a voice alternating between desperate and hopeful, Qu Feifei talked to her daughter continuously Tuesday afternoon through a window left ajar at the main military hospital in this southern Chinese city.

“Yueyue, give Mom another chance to love you, OK?” she finally begged, sobbing.

On the other side of the window, two-year-old Wang Yue — affectionately known as Yueyue — lay almost lifeless in bed inside the intensive care unit, with netting around her head and a respirator covering her small face.

The toddler was gravely injured in two successive hit-and-run incidents last Thursday not far from her father’s hardware store in the nearby city of Foshan. When CNN visited the scene Tuesday evening, the blood stains had long gone but two circled numbers on the ground made with black markers clearly indicated the locations of both collisions.

Wang’s condition remained critical, her brain showing little activity despite some earlier subtle movements in the lower body, her mother said.

Gruesome security camera footage of the accidents and the girl, lying in her own blood, ignored by more than a dozen passers-by in a busy market has outraged the nation, stirring an emotional debate on the state of morality in a fast-changing society.

On Sina Weibo, China’s equivalent of Twitter, the story continued to be the No. 1 topic after generating more than 4.5 million posts along with a “stop apathy” online campaign. While the initial video went viral on Chinese Internet, state-run newspapers and television stations have since seized on the story, turning their spotlight on an unlikely hero as well as many villains.

Good Samaritan laws in China

Chen Xianmei, a 58-year-old scavenger who was seen in the video moving Yue to safety, became an instant symbol of understated decency in a nation that many netizens say has become obsessed with climbing up the economic ladder. Camera crews chased Chen for interviews, while local government and businesses fought to award her money.

China: Hit-and-run video sparks outcry

“I didn’t think of anything at the time,” she told local reporters Sunday. “I just wanted to save the girl.”

Chen’s overnight celebrity, however, appeared too overwhelming for her. Her neighbors told CNN Tuesday night she had gone home to the countryside with her son.

Domestic media also tracked down some of the passersby in the video. While several denied seeing Wang lie on the ground, one pedestrian told Yangcheng Evening News that she noticed a girl crying next to a pool of blood.

“I went to the closest store and asked a young man there if she was his child, but he said no,” the newspaper quoted her as saying. “Nobody else dared to touch her, how did I?”

“This is sort of classic bystander effect, where people have a diffusion of responsibility,” Wendy Walsh, a psychologist based in Los Angeles, commented on CNN.

Wang’s mother said in tears that she still couldn’t comprehend the behavior of the passers-by but wanted to focus on the positive.

“Granny Chen represents the best of human nature,” Qu said of her daughter’s rescuer at the scene. “It’s the nicest and most natural side of us.”

Despite rising concerns over China’s declining morality after the story broke, humanity now shines at the Guangzhou hospital where Yue is being treated.

A steady procession of well-wishers surrounds her family throughout the day, offering gifts, money and support.

“I’m so grateful for all the nice people,” Qu said. “Yueyue won’t let them down.

“I know my girl — she’s strong and she’ll wake up again.”
