MICHIGAN WON: The Wolverines had absolutely no trouble with Illinois on Saturday in Ann Arbor, blowing out the Illini45-0. The Wolverines had 527 yards of offense and held Illinois to only 134 yards of offense. It’s not science, but generally when you have 400 more yards of offense than your opponent, you’re going to win a football game.
Denard Robinson had the biggest day of any Wolverine, compiling 287 yards of offense and four touchdowns.
WHY MICHIGAN WON: Illinois wasn’t able to get much of anything going on offense all day before he got hurt, but once quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase was forced to leave the game, Illinois had seemingly no hope on offense. Meanwhile, while the Wolverines offense slowed down for a few minutes after Denard Robinson hurt his hand, Michigan had no trouble moving the ball on the Illinois defense. Of course, you already knew that because you saw the score.
WHEN MICHIGAN WON: As I said, Denard Robinson had to leave the game with a hand injury in the second quarter, but when he returned he reminded everybody he doesn’t need his hands. All that matters is that his legs work. So when Robinson scored a touchdown to make it 17-0 with just under five minutes left in the first half, you had a good idea this game was over. When Robinson scampered for a 49-yard touchdown to open the second half, you knew the Wolverines would cover the spread, too.
WHAT MICHIGAN WON: The losses against Alabama and Notre Dame in September hurt, but here we are halfway through October and Michigan finds itself at 2-0 in the Big Ten, on top of the Legends Division with Iowa. A Big Ten title and a Rose Bowl appearance are still very much in play for the Wolverines.
WHAT ILLINOIS LOST: What’s been a nightmare season for Illinois just kept rolling along on Saturday. The Illini are now 2-5 on the season and 0-3 in the Big Ten. In their three conference losses, the Illini have been outscored 111-21. No wonder there are already fans calling for Tim Beckman’s job even though he’s only seven games into his Illinois tenure.
