Iraq-bombing

December 22, 2011       8:09 am

A string of explosions ripped through the Iraqi capital on Thursday, killing at least 60 people and injuring nearly 200 just days after the last U.S. troops left the country, police and health officials said.

The attacks came in the midst of a political standoff between the country’s main Shiite and Sunni Muslim factions, heightening fears of a return to the sectarian bloodletting that devastated the country a few years ago.

Authorities said more than a dozen bombs exploded in different parts of Baghdad in a seemingly coordinated assault during the morning rush hour. Most of the targeted neighborhoods were predominantly Shiite, but some Sunni areas were also hit.

In the deadliest attack, a suicide bomber detonated an ambulance packed with explosives in front of a government anti-corruption office in the Karada neighborhood, shattering windows and setting cars ablaze. A police officer at the scene said at least 16 people were killed and 45 injured.

Iraq’s health ministry put the morning’s death toll at 60 and said at least 180 people were injured. But unofficial tallies collected by news services from police and health officials suggested that the number of casualties was higher.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility. But the seemingly coordinated attacks bore the hallmarks of Sunni insurgents linked to Al Qaeda, who regularly target Shiites and have previously sought to capitalize on political tension to ignite sectarian strife.

Iraq’s leaders were quick to link the attacks to the political crisis. In a statement, Prime Minister Nouri Maliki said the timing and locations of the bombings confirmed “the political nature” of the attacks.

This week, Maliki’s Shiite-led government accused Sunni Vice President Tariq Hashimi of running a death squad that targeted government officials during the height of the sectarian fighting. An arrest warrant was issued and videotaped confessions were broadcast on state television from three of Hashimi’s bodyguards who said they had been ordered to commit murders.

Hashimi angrily refuted the claims at a news conference Tuesday, saying he was ready to stand trial but only in the semi-autonomous Kurdish region in northern Iraq, where he has sought refuge. Maliki demanded that the Kurdish authorities hand over Hashimi to face terrorism charges in Baghdad.

The warrant for Hashimi’s arrest was announced the day after the last U.S. troops left Iraq, heightening suspicions among many in the Sunni minority that Maliki is trying to sideline their representatives in the country’s power-sharing government and consolidate his authority by arresting and intimidating rivals.

Maliki asked the Iraqi parliament on Sunday to issue a vote of no confidence in his Sunni deputy, Saleh Mutlaq, who had compared the prime minister to a dictator.

The Iraqiya coalition — a large political bloc that is led by former Prime Minister Ayad Allawi, a secular Shiite, and includes Hashimi and Mutlaq as members — began boycotting parliament on Saturday.

7 + 30 +2+0+1+1 = 41 = Baghdad’s personal year (from July 30th, 2011 to July 29th, 2012) = Things get ugly.

41 year + 11 (November) = 52 = Baghdad’s personal month (from November 30th, 2011 to December 29th, 2011) = Divide and conquer.

When Baghdad’s number (52 (it’s life lesson number)) comes up, that’s when Baghdad gets to live/experience what Baghdad is here to live/experience.  So, unfortunately, this is Baghdad’s month.

Wreckage with bombed out buildings and paramedicsOslo explosion

5:14pm UK, Friday July 22, 2011

Norwegian police have said that an explosion in Oslo this afternoon was caused by a bomb, and has led to “deaths and injuries” – while Sky sources report a nearby children’s camp has been attacked.

Police said there were “one or more powerful explosions in the government building in Oslo”.

They have told people in the Norwegian capital to stay away from the city centre and limit the use of mobile phones.

A government minister has said that some people are trapped at the bomb site.

Sky sources said that survivors reported a strong smell of sulphur which has led to police investigating the theory this was a car bomb using fertiliser nitrate.

Sky’s security editor Sam Kiley said that earlier this year, al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula released a bomb-making handbook which contained notes on how to build fertiliser bombs.

“The knowhow is out there and the materials are out there,” he said.

And he added that if it was a fertiliser car bomb, it would have been very damaging.

“You could get a ton of relatively high explosive concentrated in a metal box – what you have is a gigantic grenade.”

The explosion was thought to be outside the building that housed the offices of the Prime Minister, Jens Stoltenberg.

He was not thought to have been in his office at the time, and was reported to be safe.

It was also thought to be near Norway’s biggest tabloid newspaper.

Mr Stoltenberg described the situation as “very serious” but said it was too soon to say what caused the explosion.

Journalist Asgeir Ueland said that Oslo is a popular destination for people from other parts of Norway.

He said the streets were crowded: “It happened when people were packing up for the weekend and leaving their offices.

“There were lots of people with blood on their faces and severe cuts.”

Craig Barnes is in Oslo and said that he was shocked at what has happened.

“It is a very nice, safe place to live.

“Norwegians are very friendly and I think everyone gets on.

“I think this is going to change a lot of views now. There will be questions regarding safety.”

Christopher Hall was at home nearby when he heard the explosion.

“I thought it was thunder as it has been raining all day,” he said.

“It is the kind of thing you imagine will never happen near where you are.”

Nearby offices in the Norwegian capital were evacuated.

Large amounts of glass and metal were seen in the street.

Police and fire officials have declined to comment on the cause of the explosion.

The wreckage of a car was seen outside one building and there was early speculation that the damage was consistent with that from a car bomb.

Nato member Norway has been the target of threats in the past – particularly for its involvement in Afghanistan and Libya.

The country has also experienced problems with several home-grown terror plots linked to al Qaeda.

Last week, a Norwegian prosecutor filed terror charges against an Iraqi-born cleric for threatening Norwegian politicians with death if he was deported.

The Swedish foreign minister, Carl Bildt, posted a message on Twitter about the bombs.

“Terrorism has struck. Police confirms bomb in Oslo. We are all Norwegians.”
