Douglas J. Dayton, who served as the first president of Target department stores when his family’s retailing company created the chain 61 years ago, has died. He was 88.

He died on July 5 at his home in Wayzata, Minnesota, following a long battle with cancer, his wife, Wendy Dayton, said.

Since 1983, Target shares outperformed all other department-store companies in the Standard & Poor’s 500 Retailing Index, returning more than 27-fold. Photographer: Daniel Acker/Bloomberg

With four brothers, Dayton took over and reshaped the Dayton Co., which had begun under their grandfather, George Draper Dayton, as Dayton’s department store in downtown Minneapolis.

When the company in 1961 formed the discount chain called Target, Dayton became president. The first Target opened in May 1962 in Roseville, Minnesota. By the end of that year, three other Target stores were open, all in the suburbs of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. In 1966, Target expanded outside Minnesota, opening stores around Denver.

“We will offer high-quality merchandise at low margins because we are cutting expenses,” Dayton said, according to “On Target: How the World’s Largest Retailer Hit a Bullseye,” Laura Rowley’s 2003 book. “We would much rather do this than trumpet dramatic price cuts on cheap merchandise.”

Dayton said customers began calling the chain “Tarjay” — imbuing the name with faux French glamour — as early as 1962. “Duluth was the first place I heard it,” he said, referring to one of the first four Minnesota locations.

Venture Capital

Dayton returned to corporate headquarters in 1968. He became senior vice president of administration of Dayton Hudson Corp., formed by the 1969 merger of Dayton with J.L. Hudson Co. of Detroit, which was then the largest privately held U.S. department-store company.

Dayton left the company in 1974 to start Dade Development Capital, a venture-capital company, and retired in 1994. The Dayton family ended 80 years of direct family involvement with the company in 1983. In 2000, Dayton Hudson changed its name to Target Corp. (TGT)

“Along with his brothers and cousin, Doug was instrumental in helping to guide the strategic direction of Dayton Hudson Corp. for many years and institutionalize the values that are at the heart of Target Corp. today,” Gregg Steinhafel, Target’s president and chief executive officer, said in a statement. “We are thankful for Doug’s leadership and his many contributions to our company and community.”

The retailer has consistently rewarded investors in recent decades. Since 1983, Target shares outperformed all other department-store companies in the Standard & Poor’s 500 Retailing Index, returning more than 27-fold.

Ribbon Cutting

Douglas Dayton watched with pride as the Target chain grew, his wife said yesterday in an interview.

“The creativity behind the marketing and merchandising was fantastic, and he really honored his successors, tremendously,” Wendy Dayton said.

She said her husband took part in a ribbon-cutting ceremony about two years ago at a new Target store that opened near their home in Savannah, Georgia.

Douglas James Dayton was born on Dec. 2, 1924, in Minneapolis, the youngest of five brothers born to George Nelson Dayton and the former Grace Bliss.

He graduated from the Blake School in Minneapolis in 1942 and served in World War II as a U.S. Army mortar sergeant, joining George Patton’s army in France 30 days after D-Day, according to the death notice in the Minneapolis Star Tribune newspaper. He was injured during combat and received the Purple Heart. He then studied at Amherst College in Massachusetts.

Expected Success

Dayton began working at the family’s Minneapolis store, moving to Rochester, Minnesota, to run its first branch location in 1954. When Target was started, he predicted it would be a sales leader.

“I remember telling my brother Bruce that we were going to do $100 million, and he sent me a nice note when we did it in 1968,” Dayton recalled in an interview two months ago, according to the Star Tribune. “We laughed at that one. It took about 10 years to get to $1 billion in sales.”

The Dayton Co. went public in 1967, with Target Stores as one of its divisions. The others were Dayton’s department stores, B. Dalton Bookseller, Dayton Jewelers and Dayton Development Co., according to a Target corporate history.

In addition to his wife, his survivors include his children, David, Steve, Bruce and Elizabeth; six grandchildren; and Bruce Dayton, the last of the five brothers.

Dayton’s nephew, Mark Dayton, the governor of Minnesota, said in a statement that his uncle “was an extraordinary businessman, philanthropist and leader of our family.”

A central Indiana man who prosecutors say killed his friend and stuffed the body inside an unplugged freezer faces additional charges.

Howard County Deputy Prosecutor Jeremy Peelle filed additional charges of murder while attempting deviate conduct, reckless homicide and confinement last week against Walter Logan, 52, of Kokomo.

Logan was being held without bond Saturday in the county jail in Kokomo, about 50 miles north of Indianapolis. A jail officer told The Associated Press she didn’t know the name of Logan’s attorney.

Logan’s trial had been scheduled to begin Wednesday, but the Kokomo Tribune reported (http://bit.ly/15myYG3 ) the new charges prompted Logan’s defense attorney to request a continuance. A judge reset the trial for Oct. 7.

Prosecutors have not said whether they will seek the death penalty or life in prison without parole.

Police were looking for 29-year-old Alex Shipp in early December after his mother told them she hadn’t heard from her son in nearly a month. Officers who went to Logan’s house found Shipp’s badly decomposed but intact body in a freezer that was not plugged in.

Court documents say Logan told investigators that he and Shipp had known each other for about two years and had a sexual relationship. He said that one night about four weeks earlier, the men got drunk, did drugs and had sex. Afterward, Logan said Shipp became belligerent and wanted to fight, but Logan bound Shipp’s hands and feet and placed duct tape over his nose and mouth.

Logan told investigators he tried to kill himself with pills and wrote a suicide note, but he fell asleep before he could finish writing it. When Logan woke up, Shipp appeared to be dead. Logan removed the tape from Shipp’s face before going back to sleep, court documents say.

After he awoke again, Logan allegedly waited about six hours and then carried Shipp’s body to the basement, where he stuffed it inside the freezer, documents say. When police came to Logan’s home, documents say, he led them through the stinking house to the freezer.

Investigators said even if Logan hadn’t intended to kill Shipp, he should have realized that sealing his mouth and nose so he couldn’t breathe would cause his death.

The parents of a woman wanted for seducing men in bars, drugging and robbing them have spoken out about how their daughter’s life spiraled out of control after she fell under the clutches of a pimp.

Police are seeking Ryan Elkins, 23, one of ‘four foxy thieves’ who allegedly carried out a series of thefts totaling more than half a million dollars in cash, guns, luxury watches, diamonds and other possessions.

The four thieves would frequent bars and clubs in Fort Lauderdale, Florida before seducing men and robbing them, police said.

Two of the women have been arrested, while two remain at large.

Elkins’ parents, retired NYPD cop Jeff Elkins, 60, and his wife Pamela, said they are heartbroken over their daughter’s fall from a promising student with dreams of becoming a nurse.

‘We’ll never understand what happened,’ her father told the Sun Sentinel. ‘It’s a parents worst nightmare.’

The couple, who lives in Staten Island, New York, said they now only hear from Elkins, who has a young son, if she has bad news. ‘I always expect the worst,’ Jeff Elkins added.

Her son was fathered by a pimp who controls her, they said.

‘They’ve turned her into someone we don’t recognize,’ her mother said. ‘They took her away, and this is what they did to her.’

Before she met him, she dabbled in partying as a teenager and would sneak out from the house, but they assumed it was an adolescent phase.

But she met the pimp in a Manhattan nightclub around five years ago, and was won over by money and cars, her parents said.

They added that they believe she has an undiagnosed mental-health disorder.

‘She has no fear of anything,’ Jeff Elkins said. ‘She has no feelings. She’s just detached form everything, it’s just not normal.

‘We love her. We don’t understand what’s going on. We can’t figure it out. We probably never will.’

Of the four women, Johnnina Miller, 25, and Elkins are still on the loose. Subhanna Beyah, 25, and Keisha Clark, 27, were arrested last week on grand-theft charges.

Beyah, who used Crystal as one of her aliases, was arrested in the Queens area of  New York on Sunday.

Keisha Clarke turned herself into Miami Dade police on Thursday. She posted bail the following day.

Giants defensive tackle Shaun Rogers met Beyah in March at Club Liv in Miami, and then brought her back to his Fontainebleau Hotel room, according to the New York Daily News.

After waking up around 12:30pm, the safe in his room was missing more than $400,000 worth of jewelry which included diamond earrings valued at $100,000, two watches valued at $160,000 and a Cuban necklace and pendant valued at $70,000, police said.

On another occasion she met a man at an upscale restaurant and went back to his house in Pompano Beach where she made him a cocktail.

The 45-year-old woke up the following afternoon and discovered that $6,000 in cash and his collection of expensive watches – two Rolexes, one Cartier and one Panerai totaling $80,000 to $100,000 – were gone.

On April 27 Beyah worked with Elkins to con a 54-year-old they met at an unspecified club. While Beyah distracted the man, Elkins made him a drink that made him enter ‘what he described as a drug-like state’ rendering him unconscious, according to the affidavit.

When he awoke hours later, two of his Glock 9mm handguns, a Smith & Wesson .38 caliber handgun, a Rolex watch and three 3.5 carat marquise diamonds worth more than $250,000 were missing.

Another victim, Steven Kesto, described meeting Beyah and another woman at Blue Martini on Feb 20.

He took them back to his condo where the last thing he remembers was sitting on his bed with the women, being encouraged to sip a vodka cranberry they had mixed.

When he woke up he found the women were gone, along with his iPad and a $27,000 Cartier diamond and gold watch.

He also felt terrible. His heart raced, breathing was difficult and he had a headache.

Another incident involved just Miller and Clark, who tag-teamed to steal from a man they met at Blue Martini. They convinced the 54-year-old to bring them back to his place where he ‘began to feel like he was in a drugged state.

When he awoke, he was missing $300 cash, an iPhone, an iPad, an American Express card, a debit card and a $8,000 watch.

Clark used the debit card to withdraw more than $500 dollars from the man’s bank account, according to PNC bank security footage taken the next day.

Beyah’s prior record includes nearly two dozen arrests stemming from charges of prostitution, grand theft, fraud, forgery, and illegal use of credit cards. She has gone by the name Christina More, Christian Moore, Christine Brown, Christin Miller and Crystal Alex Jones.

Elkins has been arrested three times, twice for prostitution in February and November 2009 and once for larceny last September.

Clark has been arrested 14 times since June 2000, including charges of aggravated assault with a weapon, criminal mischief, larceny, fraud, burglary and battery . Miller, has been arrested six times on charges of grand theft, prostitution, fraud and marijuana possession.

Police were finally able to identify the suspects after working to compile physical evidence, surveillance videos and victim and witness interviews, according to Broward Sheriff’s Office Detective Ronald Cusumano.

‘We need to locate these women. They are dangerous. They’re giving people drugs. They could kill somebody,’ Sheriff’s spokesman Dani Moschella said last week.  told the Sun Sentinel.

Their victims were mainly men between the ages 33 and 58 and they were targeted at bars such as Vibe Ultra Lounge, YOLO, Blue Martini, Dicey Riley’s and the Elbo Room in Miami.

The P90X workout is one of the biggest fitness trends in the past several years, with enthusiastic endorsements across the cultural spectrum, including everyone from singer Pink to 2012 Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan.

But businessman Matt Lombardi says just one day of the program’s strenuous routine sent him into the emergency room with kidney failure.

“I simply wanted to get back in shape. I could have killed myself in the process,” Lombardi writes on his site, College Spun.

Lombardi says he has “always been an athlete” and that he didn’t wander recklessly into the program. Instead, he says he wanted to try P90X to help lose the 20 pounds he had gained while developing College Spun.

After completing only half of the first day of workouts, Lombardi said he woke up the next morning feeling sore and ill.

“If you’ve done P90X, then you know that the first day (chest & back) is really, really difficult,” he writes. “You’re asked to do push-ups, then pull-ups, then push-ups, then pull-ups. I lost count of my how many of each I did — but it was a lot. Eventually, my muscles just shut down.”

Despite the pain, he decided to try day two of the program. Instead, he found himself back in bed. On the third day, he describes using the bathroom and being shocked when his urine “looked like Coca-Cola.”

After a quick Web search, Lombardi guessed he was experiencing rhabdomyolysis. The National Institutes of Health describes the condition as “the breakdown of muscle fibers that leads to the release of muscle fiber contents (myoglobin) into the bloodstream. Myoglobin is harmful to the kidney and often causes kidney damage.”

The condition is commonly brought on by excessive physical activity and results when excessive toxins are released into the bloodstream.

So, why did Lombardi end up in the hospital when thousands of other individuals, many without a background in athletic activity, have a positive experience with P90X? Several experts warn that jumping into P90X, or any intense workout routine, without taking proper precautions poses a wide array of risks.

Of course, like any other trendy exercise program, P90X is not without its critics. In a YouTube video, Dr. Jarod Carter, a personal trainer, jokes that the program has been great for his business, by increasing the number of patients who come to him with lower-back pain resulting from P90X.

“I see a lot of people trying to do, or being asked to do, abdominal exercises that their abs are simply not strong enough to actually do,” he says in the video.

“I’ll be honest — P90X has a number of ‘warnings’ about what strenuous exercise can do to your body,” Lombardi wrote. “But if I’d specifically known about rhabdomyolysis, I don’t think I’d have ever even taken the plunge.”

Lombardi then checked himself into an emergency room, where he says the levels of toxins in his bloodstream were literally off the charts.

“My blood test came back with a CPK (creatine phosphokinase) level of over 16,800 (the max they can test for),” he wrote. “Normal CPK levels, I was told, usually run between 10-200 micrograms per liter. These levels are a huge indicator of severe rhabdomylolysis.”

Doctors hooked him up to an IV, Lombardi wrote, and he spent the next several days under observation while doctors waited for the toxicity levels in his bloodstream to return to normal.

Going forward, he was told to approach future exercise routines with caution.

“My two biggest takeaways from the entire ordeal? You can’t put your muscles through a strenuous workout without leading up to it, and you need to recognize when you’re body is telling you that there is something wrong,” Lombardi writes. “The first could have killed me, while the second may have saved me.”

Manny Ramirez will try his shot at a return to the major leagues, as the Texas Rangers have agreed to a minor league deal with the slugger. (He has to cut his hair, though.)

Manny Ramirez will try to make it back to the major leagues after signing a minor-league deal with the Texas Rangers.

The last we heard of Manny, he was in Taiwan, doing this:

The 41-year-old, whose 555 home runs rank 14th on MLB’s all-time list, became a bit of a cult icon in Taiwan. But Ramirez left his Taiwanese team, the EDA Rhinos, before his three-month contract expired, and did so with the intention of returning to the major leagues.

Now, he’ll have his chance. Ramirez hasn’t played in MLB since 2011, when he had one hit in 17 plate appearances for the Tampa Bay Rays before his “retirement,” shortly followed by the news of a 100-game suspension after a PED test showed positive results. He signed a minor-league deal with the Oakland A’s organization last season, and after sitting out for 50 games, hit .302 for Triple-A Sacramento but struck out 17 times while reaching base 24 times in 69 plate appearances. He requested his release after just 17 games.

It appears Ramirez is more serious about his desire to make things work this time: he’s agreed to cut his famous locks and will follow all Rangers minor league rules.

Ramirez obviously isn’t expected to be the guy who hit 40 home runs, year-in, year-out with an OPS better than 1.000. Sure, he tore it up in Taiwan, hitting .352 with eight home runs in 49 games, but that’s a long way from the show, and he hasn’t shown the skill or committal to play in the big leagues anytime recently. But he’s one of the greats, if you ignore two positive steroid tests, with 12 All-Star appearances to his name. He’d likely be playing designated hitter at this point in his career, where he’d have to prove he’s an improvement on Lance Berkman, currently hitting .263 with six homers.

Mark Munoz vs. Tim Boetsch

I struggled with a pick here. On the one hand, Munoz has mentally and physically been all over the place. He looks sharp now, but he’s struggled with weight, depression, injury and age. That’d make one want to pick Boetsch, but he looked as flat as can be in his bout with Costa Philippou. Age appears to be catching up with him.

I’m going to go with Boetsch if for no other reason than control and takedowns. I can easily see Boetsch scoring takedowns and controlling Munoz on top, for long stretches of a round(s). But am I confident about any outcome here? No, not really.

Pick: Boetsch
