Douglas J. Dayton, who served as the first president of Target department stores when his family’s retailing company created the chain 61 years ago, has died. He was 88.

He died on July 5 at his home in Wayzata, Minnesota, following a long battle with cancer, his wife, Wendy Dayton, said.

Since 1983, Target shares outperformed all other department-store companies in the Standard & Poor’s 500 Retailing Index, returning more than 27-fold. Photographer: Daniel Acker/Bloomberg

With four brothers, Dayton took over and reshaped the Dayton Co., which had begun under their grandfather, George Draper Dayton, as Dayton’s department store in downtown Minneapolis.

When the company in 1961 formed the discount chain called Target, Dayton became president. The first Target opened in May 1962 in Roseville, Minnesota. By the end of that year, three other Target stores were open, all in the suburbs of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. In 1966, Target expanded outside Minnesota, opening stores around Denver.

“We will offer high-quality merchandise at low margins because we are cutting expenses,” Dayton said, according to “On Target: How the World’s Largest Retailer Hit a Bullseye,” Laura Rowley’s 2003 book. “We would much rather do this than trumpet dramatic price cuts on cheap merchandise.”

Dayton said customers began calling the chain “Tarjay” — imbuing the name with faux French glamour — as early as 1962. “Duluth was the first place I heard it,” he said, referring to one of the first four Minnesota locations.

Venture Capital

Dayton returned to corporate headquarters in 1968. He became senior vice president of administration of Dayton Hudson Corp., formed by the 1969 merger of Dayton with J.L. Hudson Co. of Detroit, which was then the largest privately held U.S. department-store company.

Dayton left the company in 1974 to start Dade Development Capital, a venture-capital company, and retired in 1994. The Dayton family ended 80 years of direct family involvement with the company in 1983. In 2000, Dayton Hudson changed its name to Target Corp. (TGT)

“Along with his brothers and cousin, Doug was instrumental in helping to guide the strategic direction of Dayton Hudson Corp. for many years and institutionalize the values that are at the heart of Target Corp. today,” Gregg Steinhafel, Target’s president and chief executive officer, said in a statement. “We are thankful for Doug’s leadership and his many contributions to our company and community.”

The retailer has consistently rewarded investors in recent decades. Since 1983, Target shares outperformed all other department-store companies in the Standard & Poor’s 500 Retailing Index, returning more than 27-fold.

Ribbon Cutting

Douglas Dayton watched with pride as the Target chain grew, his wife said yesterday in an interview.

“The creativity behind the marketing and merchandising was fantastic, and he really honored his successors, tremendously,” Wendy Dayton said.

She said her husband took part in a ribbon-cutting ceremony about two years ago at a new Target store that opened near their home in Savannah, Georgia.

Douglas James Dayton was born on Dec. 2, 1924, in Minneapolis, the youngest of five brothers born to George Nelson Dayton and the former Grace Bliss.

He graduated from the Blake School in Minneapolis in 1942 and served in World War II as a U.S. Army mortar sergeant, joining George Patton’s army in France 30 days after D-Day, according to the death notice in the Minneapolis Star Tribune newspaper. He was injured during combat and received the Purple Heart. He then studied at Amherst College in Massachusetts.

Expected Success

Dayton began working at the family’s Minneapolis store, moving to Rochester, Minnesota, to run its first branch location in 1954. When Target was started, he predicted it would be a sales leader.

“I remember telling my brother Bruce that we were going to do $100 million, and he sent me a nice note when we did it in 1968,” Dayton recalled in an interview two months ago, according to the Star Tribune. “We laughed at that one. It took about 10 years to get to $1 billion in sales.”

The Dayton Co. went public in 1967, with Target Stores as one of its divisions. The others were Dayton’s department stores, B. Dalton Bookseller, Dayton Jewelers and Dayton Development Co., according to a Target corporate history.

In addition to his wife, his survivors include his children, David, Steve, Bruce and Elizabeth; six grandchildren; and Bruce Dayton, the last of the five brothers.

Dayton’s nephew, Mark Dayton, the governor of Minnesota, said in a statement that his uncle “was an extraordinary businessman, philanthropist and leader of our family.”

A central Indiana man who prosecutors say killed his friend and stuffed the body inside an unplugged freezer faces additional charges.

Howard County Deputy Prosecutor Jeremy Peelle filed additional charges of murder while attempting deviate conduct, reckless homicide and confinement last week against Walter Logan, 52, of Kokomo.

Logan was being held without bond Saturday in the county jail in Kokomo, about 50 miles north of Indianapolis. A jail officer told The Associated Press she didn’t know the name of Logan’s attorney.

Logan’s trial had been scheduled to begin Wednesday, but the Kokomo Tribune reported (http://bit.ly/15myYG3 ) the new charges prompted Logan’s defense attorney to request a continuance. A judge reset the trial for Oct. 7.

Prosecutors have not said whether they will seek the death penalty or life in prison without parole.

Police were looking for 29-year-old Alex Shipp in early December after his mother told them she hadn’t heard from her son in nearly a month. Officers who went to Logan’s house found Shipp’s badly decomposed but intact body in a freezer that was not plugged in.

Court documents say Logan told investigators that he and Shipp had known each other for about two years and had a sexual relationship. He said that one night about four weeks earlier, the men got drunk, did drugs and had sex. Afterward, Logan said Shipp became belligerent and wanted to fight, but Logan bound Shipp’s hands and feet and placed duct tape over his nose and mouth.

Logan told investigators he tried to kill himself with pills and wrote a suicide note, but he fell asleep before he could finish writing it. When Logan woke up, Shipp appeared to be dead. Logan removed the tape from Shipp’s face before going back to sleep, court documents say.

After he awoke again, Logan allegedly waited about six hours and then carried Shipp’s body to the basement, where he stuffed it inside the freezer, documents say. When police came to Logan’s home, documents say, he led them through the stinking house to the freezer.

Investigators said even if Logan hadn’t intended to kill Shipp, he should have realized that sealing his mouth and nose so he couldn’t breathe would cause his death.

The parents of a woman wanted for seducing men in bars, drugging and robbing them have spoken out about how their daughter’s life spiraled out of control after she fell under the clutches of a pimp.

Police are seeking Ryan Elkins, 23, one of ‘four foxy thieves’ who allegedly carried out a series of thefts totaling more than half a million dollars in cash, guns, luxury watches, diamonds and other possessions.

The four thieves would frequent bars and clubs in Fort Lauderdale, Florida before seducing men and robbing them, police said.

Two of the women have been arrested, while two remain at large.

Elkins’ parents, retired NYPD cop Jeff Elkins, 60, and his wife Pamela, said they are heartbroken over their daughter’s fall from a promising student with dreams of becoming a nurse.

‘We’ll never understand what happened,’ her father told the Sun Sentinel. ‘It’s a parents worst nightmare.’

The couple, who lives in Staten Island, New York, said they now only hear from Elkins, who has a young son, if she has bad news. ‘I always expect the worst,’ Jeff Elkins added.

Her son was fathered by a pimp who controls her, they said.

‘They’ve turned her into someone we don’t recognize,’ her mother said. ‘They took her away, and this is what they did to her.’

Before she met him, she dabbled in partying as a teenager and would sneak out from the house, but they assumed it was an adolescent phase.

But she met the pimp in a Manhattan nightclub around five years ago, and was won over by money and cars, her parents said.

They added that they believe she has an undiagnosed mental-health disorder.

‘She has no fear of anything,’ Jeff Elkins said. ‘She has no feelings. She’s just detached form everything, it’s just not normal.

‘We love her. We don’t understand what’s going on. We can’t figure it out. We probably never will.’

Of the four women, Johnnina Miller, 25, and Elkins are still on the loose. Subhanna Beyah, 25, and Keisha Clark, 27, were arrested last week on grand-theft charges.

Beyah, who used Crystal as one of her aliases, was arrested in the Queens area of  New York on Sunday.

Keisha Clarke turned herself into Miami Dade police on Thursday. She posted bail the following day.

Giants defensive tackle Shaun Rogers met Beyah in March at Club Liv in Miami, and then brought her back to his Fontainebleau Hotel room, according to the New York Daily News.

After waking up around 12:30pm, the safe in his room was missing more than $400,000 worth of jewelry which included diamond earrings valued at $100,000, two watches valued at $160,000 and a Cuban necklace and pendant valued at $70,000, police said.

On another occasion she met a man at an upscale restaurant and went back to his house in Pompano Beach where she made him a cocktail.

The 45-year-old woke up the following afternoon and discovered that $6,000 in cash and his collection of expensive watches – two Rolexes, one Cartier and one Panerai totaling $80,000 to $100,000 – were gone.

On April 27 Beyah worked with Elkins to con a 54-year-old they met at an unspecified club. While Beyah distracted the man, Elkins made him a drink that made him enter ‘what he described as a drug-like state’ rendering him unconscious, according to the affidavit.

When he awoke hours later, two of his Glock 9mm handguns, a Smith & Wesson .38 caliber handgun, a Rolex watch and three 3.5 carat marquise diamonds worth more than $250,000 were missing.

Another victim, Steven Kesto, described meeting Beyah and another woman at Blue Martini on Feb 20.

He took them back to his condo where the last thing he remembers was sitting on his bed with the women, being encouraged to sip a vodka cranberry they had mixed.

When he woke up he found the women were gone, along with his iPad and a $27,000 Cartier diamond and gold watch.

He also felt terrible. His heart raced, breathing was difficult and he had a headache.

Another incident involved just Miller and Clark, who tag-teamed to steal from a man they met at Blue Martini. They convinced the 54-year-old to bring them back to his place where he ‘began to feel like he was in a drugged state.

When he awoke, he was missing $300 cash, an iPhone, an iPad, an American Express card, a debit card and a $8,000 watch.

Clark used the debit card to withdraw more than $500 dollars from the man’s bank account, according to PNC bank security footage taken the next day.

Beyah’s prior record includes nearly two dozen arrests stemming from charges of prostitution, grand theft, fraud, forgery, and illegal use of credit cards. She has gone by the name Christina More, Christian Moore, Christine Brown, Christin Miller and Crystal Alex Jones.

Elkins has been arrested three times, twice for prostitution in February and November 2009 and once for larceny last September.

Clark has been arrested 14 times since June 2000, including charges of aggravated assault with a weapon, criminal mischief, larceny, fraud, burglary and battery . Miller, has been arrested six times on charges of grand theft, prostitution, fraud and marijuana possession.

Police were finally able to identify the suspects after working to compile physical evidence, surveillance videos and victim and witness interviews, according to Broward Sheriff’s Office Detective Ronald Cusumano.

‘We need to locate these women. They are dangerous. They’re giving people drugs. They could kill somebody,’ Sheriff’s spokesman Dani Moschella said last week.  told the Sun Sentinel.

Their victims were mainly men between the ages 33 and 58 and they were targeted at bars such as Vibe Ultra Lounge, YOLO, Blue Martini, Dicey Riley’s and the Elbo Room in Miami.

The P90X workout is one of the biggest fitness trends in the past several years, with enthusiastic endorsements across the cultural spectrum, including everyone from singer Pink to 2012 Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan.

But businessman Matt Lombardi says just one day of the program’s strenuous routine sent him into the emergency room with kidney failure.

“I simply wanted to get back in shape. I could have killed myself in the process,” Lombardi writes on his site, College Spun.

Lombardi says he has “always been an athlete” and that he didn’t wander recklessly into the program. Instead, he says he wanted to try P90X to help lose the 20 pounds he had gained while developing College Spun.

After completing only half of the first day of workouts, Lombardi said he woke up the next morning feeling sore and ill.

“If you’ve done P90X, then you know that the first day (chest & back) is really, really difficult,” he writes. “You’re asked to do push-ups, then pull-ups, then push-ups, then pull-ups. I lost count of my how many of each I did — but it was a lot. Eventually, my muscles just shut down.”

Despite the pain, he decided to try day two of the program. Instead, he found himself back in bed. On the third day, he describes using the bathroom and being shocked when his urine “looked like Coca-Cola.”

After a quick Web search, Lombardi guessed he was experiencing rhabdomyolysis. The National Institutes of Health describes the condition as “the breakdown of muscle fibers that leads to the release of muscle fiber contents (myoglobin) into the bloodstream. Myoglobin is harmful to the kidney and often causes kidney damage.”

The condition is commonly brought on by excessive physical activity and results when excessive toxins are released into the bloodstream.

So, why did Lombardi end up in the hospital when thousands of other individuals, many without a background in athletic activity, have a positive experience with P90X? Several experts warn that jumping into P90X, or any intense workout routine, without taking proper precautions poses a wide array of risks.

Of course, like any other trendy exercise program, P90X is not without its critics. In a YouTube video, Dr. Jarod Carter, a personal trainer, jokes that the program has been great for his business, by increasing the number of patients who come to him with lower-back pain resulting from P90X.

“I see a lot of people trying to do, or being asked to do, abdominal exercises that their abs are simply not strong enough to actually do,” he says in the video.

“I’ll be honest — P90X has a number of ‘warnings’ about what strenuous exercise can do to your body,” Lombardi wrote. “But if I’d specifically known about rhabdomyolysis, I don’t think I’d have ever even taken the plunge.”

Lombardi then checked himself into an emergency room, where he says the levels of toxins in his bloodstream were literally off the charts.

“My blood test came back with a CPK (creatine phosphokinase) level of over 16,800 (the max they can test for),” he wrote. “Normal CPK levels, I was told, usually run between 10-200 micrograms per liter. These levels are a huge indicator of severe rhabdomylolysis.”

Doctors hooked him up to an IV, Lombardi wrote, and he spent the next several days under observation while doctors waited for the toxicity levels in his bloodstream to return to normal.

Going forward, he was told to approach future exercise routines with caution.

“My two biggest takeaways from the entire ordeal? You can’t put your muscles through a strenuous workout without leading up to it, and you need to recognize when you’re body is telling you that there is something wrong,” Lombardi writes. “The first could have killed me, while the second may have saved me.”

Manny Ramirez will try his shot at a return to the major leagues, as the Texas Rangers have agreed to a minor league deal with the slugger. (He has to cut his hair, though.)

Manny Ramirez will try to make it back to the major leagues after signing a minor-league deal with the Texas Rangers.

The last we heard of Manny, he was in Taiwan, doing this:

The 41-year-old, whose 555 home runs rank 14th on MLB’s all-time list, became a bit of a cult icon in Taiwan. But Ramirez left his Taiwanese team, the EDA Rhinos, before his three-month contract expired, and did so with the intention of returning to the major leagues.

Now, he’ll have his chance. Ramirez hasn’t played in MLB since 2011, when he had one hit in 17 plate appearances for the Tampa Bay Rays before his “retirement,” shortly followed by the news of a 100-game suspension after a PED test showed positive results. He signed a minor-league deal with the Oakland A’s organization last season, and after sitting out for 50 games, hit .302 for Triple-A Sacramento but struck out 17 times while reaching base 24 times in 69 plate appearances. He requested his release after just 17 games.

It appears Ramirez is more serious about his desire to make things work this time: he’s agreed to cut his famous locks and will follow all Rangers minor league rules.

Ramirez obviously isn’t expected to be the guy who hit 40 home runs, year-in, year-out with an OPS better than 1.000. Sure, he tore it up in Taiwan, hitting .352 with eight home runs in 49 games, but that’s a long way from the show, and he hasn’t shown the skill or committal to play in the big leagues anytime recently. But he’s one of the greats, if you ignore two positive steroid tests, with 12 All-Star appearances to his name. He’d likely be playing designated hitter at this point in his career, where he’d have to prove he’s an improvement on Lance Berkman, currently hitting .263 with six homers.

Mark Munoz vs. Tim Boetsch

I struggled with a pick here. On the one hand, Munoz has mentally and physically been all over the place. He looks sharp now, but he’s struggled with weight, depression, injury and age. That’d make one want to pick Boetsch, but he looked as flat as can be in his bout with Costa Philippou. Age appears to be catching up with him.

I’m going to go with Boetsch if for no other reason than control and takedowns. I can easily see Boetsch scoring takedowns and controlling Munoz on top, for long stretches of a round(s). But am I confident about any outcome here? No, not really.

Mark Adrian Perry

July 03, 2013              8:19PM

A CAPTURED fugitive accused of ordering a vampire gigolo’s murder will be quizzed over whether corrupt police were involved in the hit.

Mark Adrian Perry, who had a $1 million reward on his head, was sensationally arrested in Perth on Tuesday in the latest twist in the decade-long investigation into the execution of Shane Chartres-Abbott.

The triggerman has claimed he committed the murder with the help of a then serving police officer.

Mr Perry, who vanished six years ago, was arrested at work at a Perth factory on Tuesday night after a swoop by heavily armed tactical response police officers.

He faced Perth Magistrates’ Court, charged with the murder of Chartres-Abbott at Reservoir on June 4, 2003.

Magistrate Michael Wheeler approved the 45-year-old’s extradition.

He is expected to be flown back into Melbourne today, and face court on Friday.

Police will seek to formally interview him over what he knows of the murder, which he is alleged to have commissioned for $200,000.

The triggerman implicated former Victoria Police officers Peter Lalor and David Waters in the murder.

He told investigators Mr Lalor gave him the victim’s address and an alibi and that Mr Waters was present when the murder was discussed.

Mr Lalor said yesterday he welcomed the arrest as a chance to clear his name.

“It’s a small step in getting to the truth,” he told Channel Seven.

Mr Lalor and a Melbourne organised crime boss have both previously said publicly they expect to be charged.

Two other people identified by the gunman – Evangelos Goussis and another who cannot be named – were charged last year.

Acting Inspector Dale Flynn, of the Victoria Police Briars taskforce, said outside court yesterday that the arrest was a “significant milestone” and good news for Chartres-Abbott’s family.

The murder was committed as Chartres-Abbott left for court to face charges over a 2002 assault on Mr Perry’s ex-girlfriend.

Chartres-Abbott was accused of biting part off part of her tongue at a Melbourne hotel, in an incident that allegedly caused Perry to seek revenge on him.

The gunman pounced as Chartres-Abbott’s pregnant girlfriend and her father looked on in horror.

Mr Perry was later implicated by the hitman, who confessed his own role and also pointed the finger at Mr Waters and Mr Lalor.

There had been sightings of Mr Perry in Queensland and in Thailand since he went on the run.

Assassination claimed careers, reputations

THE execution of “vampire” gigolo Shane Chartres-Abbott set off a chain reaction that still reverberates a decade later.

Careers were ruined, a global manhunt was triggered and police were named as suspects in a crime that shocked Melbourne.

His was another brutal slaying in a city then in the grip of gangland warfare.

But Chartres-Abbott’s demise was different.

About 8.45am on June 4, 2003, the male prostitute, on trial for raping a client and biting off part of her tongue, was gunned down by two men as he left his Reservoir home for court.

His horrified girlfriend watched as the killers shot the 24-year-old in the neck, then bashed her father.

Dozens of police, the dog squad and a helicopter failed to find those who carried out what was believed to be a contract killing.

A week earlier, a court heard bizarre claims that Chartres-Abbott had told a client and occasional lover he was a 200-year-old vampire who drank blood to survive.

He was accused of attacking and raping the woman, 30, after they arranged to meet at a South Yarra hotel.

The sex worker suffered black eyes, swelling, bruising to her neck and jaw, and teeth marks in her right thigh.

Several centimetres of her tongue were ripped out.

She was the ex-girlfriend of Mark Adrian Perry, who allegedly paid $200,000 to have Chartres-Abbott killed.

Four years later, Mr Perry fled as police closed in.

A $1 million reward was issued for information leading to his arrest.

Considered a master of disguise, he had previously escaped police attempts to question him. He is believed to have severed ties with his daughter and five siblings.

The 45-year-old was last seen in Queensland, at a Broadbeach cafe in August 2007, days before he fled.

In March this year, a court heard the man who shot Chartres-Abbott paid a police officer $1500 for his alibi.

Prosecutor Andrew Tinney, SC, said the man, called JP for legal reasons, shot Chartres-Abbott.

He said an arrest warrant for traffic offences was served on him later that day by a friend, a then detective sergeant named Peter Lalor, and that the killer gave the officer $1500 to “have a drink” after he was bailed.

Mr Tinney said JP was not even suspected until he confessed in 2006, implicating two others in the death, and one former and one serving police officer for helping.

Evangelos Goussis, 45, and a 41-year-old who cannot be named, were charged with murder last year.
The shooter was jailed for life in 2008 after pleading guilty to the murder.

The shooter also claimed Sgt Lalor and former police officer David Waters helped him find his victim’s address and that Mr Waters held on to the murder weapon briefly for safe-keeping.

Both men have strongly denied involvement.

The killer told the court he did not know why he confessed because he did not have a guilty conscience.

Defence lawyer James McQuillan suggested it was to benefit himself, perhaps by having loved ones put in protective custody or on the understanding his conviction would not add any time to the jail term he was serving.

In 2007, then assistant commissioner Noel Ashby and the then head of the Police Association, Paul Mullett, were also dragged into the affair.

Mr Ashby resigned in 2007 after the Office of Police Integrity alleged he was part of a chain of people involved in tipping off Sgt Lalor that he was a suspect in the murder.

The OPI alleged Mr Ashby told Sen-Sgt Mullett that Sgt Lalor was a target of the inquiry, that he told union president Brian Rix, and that Mr Rix told Mr Lalor.

All denied the allegations.

Mr Ashby was acquitted after OPI hearings were ruled invalid. Charges against Mr Mullett were dropped.

Hotshot facts:

• Hotshot crews were first used in Southern California after World War II.

• The name “hotshot” comes from the hottest part of the fire, the place where these crews are usually work.

• Crews can be sent across the country, often hiking or taking a helicopter into rugged terrain.

• Crews are required to remain on call during fire season, which can last up around six months.

• Because of their demanding jobs, hotshots are required to maintain a high fitness level.

• Interagency Hotshot Crews (IHC), the umbrella organization for hotshot crews, was created in the early 1980s.

“Fire everywhere!”

Phillip “Mando” Maldonado, a squad leader, shouts instructions as a dozen hotshots, firefighters trained to combat wildfires in extreme conditions, face a nightmare scenario: flames rushing in from all sides and their survival hinging on successfully unfolding and wrapping themselves in thin sheets of heat-reflecting material.

“Get down! Heads toward center!” Maldonado yells, the urgency in his voice rising.

Diving to the ground, crew members attempt to form a tight circle and point their feet toward the approaching flames. That will deflect heat and help protect their torsos. They clamp down on the edges of their emergency shelters to make sure fire, smoke and heat can’t get inside, and they keep their faces near the ground to breathe cooler air that won’t damage their lungs.

There’s nothing to do now but wait.

Walking among the shelters several minutes later, Maldonado and another squad leader, Clayton Whitted, see that first-year hotshot Shane Arollado has made a fatal mistake: His head pointed toward the approaching fire.

Suddenly the survivors ask playfully if Arollado’s girlfriend is now available.

“Like hell!” Arollado shouts.

Members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, one of 112 Interagency Hotshot Crews around the country, have never had to use shelters during a wildfire. But working in remote locations to get ahead of the most dangerous sections of fires makes knowing how to do so a matter of life and death.

Training is crucial, especially for the four rookies on the 22-member squad.

“If we’re not actually doing it, we’re thinking and planning about it,” said Eric Marsh, superintendent of the Granite Mountain Hotshots.

“When we get out there, it’s a completely different ballgame,” said Daniel McCarty, another squad leader. “It’s the real deal. We have to look out for each other.”

The crew, one of 13 hotshot teams in Arizona, has eight full-time members. The rest work from April until September.

Brady Higgs, in his second year with the crew, said the camaraderie and opportunity to travel drew him to this job.

“I couldn’t work inside, I don’t think,” Higgs said. “I enjoy the work, I enjoy getting to go outside and see the country.”

Being on a hotshot crew means one is on call throughout fire season, staying close enough to head out on short notice.

Fire duty can mean staying in the forest rather than returning to base camp for the night. Members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots sometimes have to spend up to two straight weeks in the wilderness, getting supplies by helicopter.

“These guys kinda become my family,” said Maldonado, the squad leader. “I saw them more than I saw my girlfriend last year.”

Last year, the Granite Mountain Hotshots fought some of the biggest fires in Arizona — Wallow, Horseshoe Two and Monument – as well as blazes in states such as Colorado, New Mexico and Minnesota.

Having to operate in the wilderness with little support, training is a way of life. On a recent weekday, preparing for fire season, members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots practiced setting up fire shelters as well as cutting fire lines.

The day included watching a video on how to use emergency shelters and what conditions crew members might face if overrun by fire.

The video featured survivors of the 1990 Dude Fire near Payson, in which six firefighters died despite wrapping themselves in shelters.

For training, crew members used green tarps shaped and packaged like fire shelters. Once the hotshots got inside, other crew members yanked on the tarps to simulate the high winds they could face.

After running the exercise once, they did it again.

When Arollado “died” during both run-throughs – it was his first time using a shelter – squad leaders Maldonado and Whitted pulled him aside to give tips.

“They were really great at showing me where I went wrong,” Arollado said. “There’s always someone trying to point you in the right direction.”

The crew also dug 1,000 feet of 3-foot-wide fire line, with some hotshots wielding chainsaws to cut down down trees and bushes.

Marsh, the crew’s superintendent, said later that everyone was rusty with training just under way. It’s particularly difficult for rookies who only have classroom experience, he said.

“It’s not uncommon to have a rookie die,” Marsh said. “Fake die, of course.”

But better to have mistakes happen here, where training can correct them, than in a real fire.

“In any other job you don’t have to worry about your life day in and day out,” said McCarty, the squad leader. “But in this job you have to watch your buddy too.”

Indianapolis Colts safety Joe Lefeged was arrested on gun-related charges after allegedly leading police on a brief chase in Washington D.C. early this morning, authorities said.

Lefeged, 25, was in a vehicle with two other men when police tried to stop the car at approximately 12:05 a.m. this morning, police said.

A brief chase ensued, resulting in the arrest of both the football player and another man, whom police identified as Aaron Timothy Wilson, 23, when police finally stopped the vehicle, authorities said.

Police allegedly found a registered .40 caliber pistol in the car, ABC Washington, D.C. affiliate WJLA-TV reported. While Lefeged’s gun was registered, it wasn’t registered in Washington, D.C., according to WJLA-TV.

Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Department Officer Araz Alali told ABC News that neither Lefeged nor Wilson was driving the car when it fled from police.

Instead, a third unidentified man was driving. When the car finally stopped, “all three fled on foot,” Alali said.

Authorities were searching for the third man today, but have not released a name or a description for the suspect.

When he was arraigned, Lefeged was ordered held without bail. His next court appearance was scheduled for July 2.

Both men face charges of carrying a firearm without a license, carrying an unregistered firearm, carrying unregistered ammunition, presence of a firearm in a motor vehicle, and possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle.

Lefeged was signed to the Colts as an undrafted free agent in 2011 after playing college football at Rutgers University, according to NFL.com.

The Indianapolis Colts issued a statement saying that the team was aware of the reports regarding Lefeged, but had no further comment “until we gain more information.”

June 27, 2013

Former New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez, already facing charges in a murder last week in North Attleborough, is also being investigated in connection with a 2012 double murder in Boston, according to two law enforcement officials briefed on the investigation.

Investigators believe a fight broke out at Cure, a club in the South End, between two men and a group that included Hernandez.

The two men, Daniel Abreu and Safiro Furtado, friends who grew up in Cape Verde, left the club with three other men in a BMW sedan.

Abreu, who was driving, stopped at a traffic light on Shawmut Avenue, about to make a left onto Herald Street, when a silver or gray SUV with Rhode Island license plates pulled alongside the sedan. Someone from the SUV opened fire, killing Abreu, 29, and Furtado, 28.The men who were with them survived the attack and the killings were left unsolved.

The officials said investigators now believe that Odin Lloyd, the man Hernandez is charged with killing in a North Attleboro industrial park June 17, may have had information about Hernandez’s role in the double slaying.

“The motive might have been that the victim knew [Hernandez] might have been involved,” one of the officials said.

The new revelations raised the specter that Hernandez might have been playing football games last season with the Patriots after he had participated in a double murder.

Hernandez pleaded not guilty Wednesday to murder and firearms charges in Attleboro District Court in the killing of Lloyd, who was shot to death June 17 in an industrial park near Hernandez’s North Attleborough home. In other news today, a second man connected to the Lloyd murder was identified: Carlos Ortiz, a 27-year-old man who lives in Bristol, Conn., Hernandez’s hometown.

The attack in Boston occurred just after 2 a.m. on July 16, 2012. Police said the shooter fired numerous times into the car, striking Abreu and Furtado, who was in the passenger seat.

One of the back-seat passengers was shot three times in the arm but survived. He was rushed to Tufts Medical Center and was treated and released. The other two occupants fled the car and were unharmed.

The two men’s deaths at the time were a mystery to their families and police, who said they had no ties to criminal activity.

Furtado was a tour guide on the idyllic island of Boa Vista in Cape Verde, where he led a mostly European clientele on jaunts along silky sand dunes, whispering palm trees, and world-class beaches, his family said. He arrived in Dorchester five months before he was killed to reconnect with his mother and sister, whom he had not seen in a decade.

Abreu grew up in Cape Verde, where he worked as a police officer there. He arrived in Dorchester around 2008 and became friends with Furtado. The two men were working together for a cleaning company based on Hamilton Street in Dorchester at the time of their deaths.

Authorities never found the SUV tied to the shooting.

Hernandez’s arraignment Wednesday in the killing of Lloyd came after a week of suspense in which media had camped out in front of Hernandez’s home and followed his car by helicopter, in a futile search for details from tight-lipped law enforcement officials. Residents in Massachusetts and beyond have been riveted by the story of a young, highly paid professional athlete who may have squandered a bright future.

The Florida man accused of stealing $2 million in merchandise from Toys R Us locations across the country appeared this week before a  probate judge to contest his competency to stand trial, with the outcome still uncertain.

Ignatius Michael Pollara, 48, of Broward County, Fla., is being held in Broward County Jail after pleading not guilty in January to charges of grand theft, organized fraud and dealing in stolen property, to name a few, according to Lizette Marciniak, a judicial assistant in the Broward County Mental Health Court.

The judge is out of the office and Marciniak said she did not know the result of Pollara’s Monday court appearance, adding that the case is still being reviewed by the mental health court.

Pollara’s attorney declined to say whether his not guilty plea was based on his competency to stand trial.

As of August 2012, Pollara had allegedly stolen an estimated $2 million worth of merchandise from Toys R Us stores in 25 different states, ranging from Maine to Florida, according to an arrest report filed in Broward County Aug. 9, 2012.

He was arrested by Det. William Upegui Jr. of the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, who had been investigating Pollara since May 2012, Upegui wrote in the report.

Pollara, Upegui alleges, used a method called “box stuffing” to smuggle valuable items out of the stores, often right under employees’ noses.

“This method of theft is used by selecting a less expensive item in the store, and removing the contents and concealing the contents somewhere in the store,” Upegui said in the report. “The suspect then selects a more expensive item in the store and places it in the empty box.”

Pollara would then proceed to checkout, paying only for the cheaper boxed item but leaving with the more expensive items inside, Upegui alleges.

Pollera had a preference for sneaking out Leapfrog computers and Lego boxed sets, valued at more than $300 each, according to the arrest report.

“He has made over 175 purchases, spending $6,737.94 at the 139 different Toys R Us locations throughout these states,” Upegui said.

Police were first alerted to Pollera’s alleged thefts when he was accused of making off with almost $900 worth of Harry Potter Lego sets from a Toys R Us store in Broward County May 9, 2012. A store employee noticed the missing toys and notified a company investigator, who, in turn, notified Upegui, according to the report.

Upegui proceeded to monitor Pollara in the course of two months as he continued allegedly to shoplift from stores in the area, according to the police report.

“We were able to track Pollara’s purchases based on the Toys R Us Rewards cards he continued to use,” Upegui said. “Pollara is responsible for multiple thefts at four different Broward County stores and 31 different Toys R Us stores throughout the state of Florida.”

Pollara allegedly sold the stolen goods on the Internet.

“It was discovered that Pollara had two different eBay sales accounts registered in Broward County, Linemart and Buy Mart-USA, in which he sold the same make and models that he had been identified as stealing from Toys R Us,” Upegui said.

From one account, Pollara sold $200,000 worth of stolen toys and, from the second account, sold $700,000-worth of toys, according to the report.

A third account, registered in Maryland and also linked to Pollara, had more than $600,000 in credit, Upegui alleges.

The three accounts, as well as allegedly stolen goods found in Pollara’s home, totaled more than $2 million, police said.

A spokeswoman for Toys R Us declined to comment on shoplifting in the chain’s stores.

He was a wheeler-dealer pardoned by another consummate dealmaker, a working-class Jewish boy who left Belgium to escape the Nazis and rose to become the billionaire “King of Commodities.”

Marc Rich’s connections to the rich and powerful not only made him fabulously wealthy but when he was indicted for fraud, racketeering and tax evasion on a grand scale, they helped secure him a pardon from Bill Clinton, hours before the U.S. president left office.

That triggered a political firestorm from critics who alleged Rich bought his pardon through donations that his ex-wife had made to the Democratic Party.

Rich died Wednesday of a stroke at a hospital in Lucerne, near his home for decades. He was 78, and his Israel-based spokesman Avner Azulay said he would be buried Thursday in a kibbutz in Israel.

Throughout his storied career at the pinnacle of high finance, Rich was known as a man who could deliver the big deals thanks to personal relationships he had forged with powerful figures around the world.

In a rare 1992 interview with NBC, Rich said that in his business, “we’re not political…That’s just the philosophy of our company.”

Yet Rich cultivated contacts with powerful politicians — in the Middle East as well as the United States — and used those ties to make billions, often when it seemed all doors were closed.

During the Arab oil embargo of the 1970s, Rich used his Middle East contacts to purchase crude oil from Iran and Iraq and made a fortune selling it to American companies.

In 1981, Rich and a partner bought 20th Century Fox and three years later he sold his interest to Rupert Murdoch for $250 million.

But in 1983, while he was in Switzerland, Rich was indicted by a U.S. federal grand jury on more than 50 counts of fraud, racketeering, trading with Iran during the U.S. Embassy hostage crisis and evading more than $48 million in income taxes.

At the time it was the largest tax evasion case in U.S. history and could have earned him more than 300 years in prison.

Although the Swiss refused to arrest or extradite Rich, he stayed on the FBI’s Most Wanted List, narrowly escaping capture in Finland, Germany, Britain and Jamaica, until Clinton granted him a pardon on Jan. 20, 2001 — the day he handed over the keys to the White House to George W. Bush.

Last-minute presidential pardons are not uncommon in the United States, but this one raised a furor. Critics believed the case showed that justice means one thing for ordinary people and another for powerful insiders.

Rich had other advocates, however.

For years influential Israelis, including ex-Prime Minister Ehud Barak and the former chief of the Mossad spy agency, Shabtai Shavit, had been urging Clinton to pardon Rich, who over two decades had contributed up to $80 million to Israeli hospitals, museums, symphonies and to the absorption of immigrants.

Moreover, Federal Election Commission records showed that Rich’s ex-wife, songwriter Denise Rich, had donated $201,000 to the Democratic Party in 2000.

At the time, Rich’s lawyers were urging the U.S. to drop the tax evasion case. When the Justice Department refused to negotiate, Rich’s attorneys turned to Clinton.

Federal authorities investigated but found no evidence of wrongdoing. Election officials also dismissed a complaint accusing Denise Rich of donating campaign money and furniture to Hillary Clinton in exchange for the pardon.

Twenty-eight British and Irish expats and holiday-makers have been fined after police in Portugal caught them playing bingo for biscuits and drinks.

Landlady Marianne Pittaway, from North Yorkshire, was fined 700 euros (£595) for hosting the game at The Yorkshire Tavern in Albufeira, on Friday night.

Ms Pittaway, 34, also received a four-month suspended prison sentence.

She said she was “still in shock” and that the country’s regulations were “wrong in a lot of aspects”.

Ms Pittaway, who has been in Portugal for eight years, said her bar would “definitely not” be staging bingo again following Friday’s raid.

The 28 appeared in court in Albufeira earlier to face charges of “exploitation of illegal gambling, illegal gambling and witnessing illegal gambling”, according to the police.

Even some of the people in the bar who were not playing bingo were fined 150 euros (£125) and given a three-month suspended sentence for “witnessing illegal gambling”.

Organisers of bingo in Portugal have to apply for a government licence.

‘Just a joke’

Speaking ahead of her court appearance, Ms Pittaway, originally from York, said: “I put on the bingo for some entertainment and a bit of fun. We were only playing for some biscuits and drinks.

“One minute we were all playing, having a bit of fun and then we were just bundled off in three police vans and taken to the police station.”

Some of the people in the bar when it was raided by the police were not required to appear in court.

Among them were Lee Williams and Claire Fairhurst, from Wigan, who were not involved in the bingo. The couple were allowed to return to the UK.

Mr Williams said: “When we tried to leave three of the guys, who were armed police, actually made a barricade in front of us and told us were not allowed to leave and that we had to go to the police station to be read our rights and that we were being arrested as part of an illegal gambling group.

“I’ve had a lot of ribbing from my mates – I’m sick of hearing people saying ‘eyes down’ or ‘house’ – you’ve just got to smile about it, really.”

In a statement, Portuguese police, Faro GNR, said the action had been carried out following “information reported by anonymous citizens”.

It said officers found people were playing “games of luck and chance” outside an authorised place.

Last season, 12-year-old Maddy Paige was the defensive tackle for her school’s football team in Georgia. Even though the team had all-male players, Maddy was encouraged to continue by her classmates and principal who went to see her play, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“It was really fun because they were really supportive. And they accepted me even though I was a girl,” she told CBS Atlanta.

But the rules have now changed at Strong Rock Christian School. Due to a new policy, Maddy has been banned from playing on the team next season. Athletic Director Phil Roberts explained the decision to 11Alive News in an email statement: “Our official policy is that middle school girls play girl sports and middle school boys play boy sports.”

Cassy Blythe, Maddy’s mom, created a Facebook page called “Let Her Play,” which currently has over 1,000 likes. The 12-year-old’s family is hoping to put pressure on the the school to change their policy so Maddy can play football again next season.

In February, 11-year-old Caroline Pla from Pennsylvania also pushed back against a boys-only rule that barred her from playing football in her community. Caroline played for a Catholic Youth Organization football league for two years, and even played on the all-star team, but the league threatened to go back to their “no girls” policy.

“First they said it was a boys sport. Then they said it was a safety issue. Then they said it was inappropriate touching,” Caroline said.

A panel selected by the archdiocese in Philadelphia voted to continue the already existing policy that would keep Caroline out of the sport, but Archbishop Charles Chaput ended up making the final decision in her favor, so she has now been re-admitted to the Catholic Youth Organization’s football league.

“Caroline was never going to give up, even if they said no,” her mom, Seal Pla, told CNN.

A young Pakistani actress was in critical condition Sunday after a man threw acid on her face while she was sleeping, her brother said.

The alleged attack on 18-year-old Bushra Waiz happened early Saturday at the family home in Nowshera, in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan.

Akhtar Waiz told CNN his family was asleep in the courtyard when a man burst in and threw acid on his sister.

Bushra Waiz, who is also known as Shazia Aziz, is a Pashto-language singer, actress and theater artist.

She suffered burns to the right side of her face. Doctors said her right leg, arm and eye were also injured.

Three Morehead State University students are among the 32 contestants that will compete in the 2013 Miss Kentucky Pageant. Those contestants are Annie Franklin of Winchester; Cayce Crowder of Louisville; and Dakoda Trenary of Corinth.

According to its website, each student gained entry into the 2013 Miss Kentucky Pageant by winning an official preliminary pageant in their respective regions. Franklin captured Miss Bluegrass Area, Crowder won Miss Heart of the Mountains while Trenary was the winner of Miss Thoroughbred of the Bluegrass.

Franklin’s platform is “H’Art of the Matter- Much More than Art” while she will sing “Happy Days Are Here Again” as her talent.

Crowder’s platform is “Baby Feat – Defeating the Stigma of Postpartum Depression” while she will sing “Brave” as her talent.

Trenary’s platform is “God’s Special Little Hearts – Raising Awareness for Children with Congenital Heart Defects” while she will perform “Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2” on the piano as her talent.

The event’s preliminary competitions will take place at 7 p.m. on June 27 and 28 with the finals and crowning set for 7 p.m., June 29. Each day of the pageant will be held at the Singletary Center for the Arts on the campus of the University of Kentucky in Lexington. Tickets are available by calling the Singletary Center box office at 859-257-4929.

Supporters of the two can possibly play an important role in the pageant’s outcome. One of the semifinalists for Miss Kentucky will be voted in by the public rather than the judges’ panel. Each vote costs $1 and can be made by credit card or PayPal at www.misskentuckypageant.com with no voting limit.

Voting ends Friday, June 28, at 9 p.m.

The winner will go on to represent Kentucky in the Miss America Pageant in 2014. In addition, more than $39,000 in cash scholarships will be awarded during the pageant’s duration.

For additional information on the Miss Kentucky Scholarship Organization, visit www.misskentuckypageant.com.

Practice makes perfect, so the saying goes, and dozens of Visalia Teen Idol contestants are hoping their practice has paid off.

Friday marked the first day of Teen Idol auditions, and several return performers hit the stage to give it their all. One of those hopefuls was Savannah Walters, a 17-year-old El Diamante senior, who says this event is a great opportunity to showcase talent.

“I really love to sing, and usually I am on stage with people telling me what to sing. This is when I get to pick songs I really like,” Walters said.

Walters was one of several contestants auditioning Friday in front of three judges. The auditions continue at 10 a.m. on June 21 at 210 Cafe in Visalia, and the public is invited to watch the auditions.

Registration packets are available at the Anthony Community Center in Visalia, 345 N. Jacob St. Contestants must have filled out their packets.

The top 10 performers will be chosen by judges and will perform at the Sept. 6 Visalia Teen Idol.

It begins! With a week to go until Big Brother Season 15 premieres, CBS has announced the names and details of the 16 houseguests who will compete against one another this summer for the half-million dollar prize. Earlier this week, we learned that there would be a few more houseguests in the BB house than usual this season, thanks to the extra weeks, and that one of the twists means there will be a third nominee on the block each week. The other was that America will be able to vote for a weekly “MVP” contestant, based on how they play the game.

In addition to announcing the contestants, CBS has opened the voting for the new season’s first MVP. Of course, we have no idea how any of them is playing the game just yet, but the site includes each houseguest’s planned strategy. That’s the plan that – for at least some of them – will probably go right out the window once they start to get to know the other houseguests. But still, it gives us some clue as to how these contestants will be trying to play the game.

In addition to not knowing who’s playing the best game, we also don’t know what the MVP’s “special power” will be, so we’re really kind of going into this blind from the start, but that’s ok. So are the houseguests, assuming none of them know one another.

Here are the photos and some basic information about each of the houseguests.

NASA has picked eight Americans, a mix of scientists and military pilots, to begin training for future space missions that may one day launch them all the way to Mars. The new class includes four men and four women who will join the 49 active astronauts at the agency’s astronaut corps at the Johnson Space Center in Houston.

The new U.S. space travelers, which NASA unveiled today (June 17), could be part of the first crews to visit an asteroid or Mars, deep-space goals that NASA aims to explore. They could also be the first people to launch to space on a U.S.-built rocket since the era of the space shuttle, which ended in 2011.

In the nearer term, the new recruits could launch on Russian rockets to serve long-duration missions on the International Space Station, which is expected to operate until at least 2020.

“These new space explorers asked to join NASA because they know we’re doing big, bold things here — developing missions to go farther into space than ever before,” NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said in a statement. “They’re excited about the science we’re doing on the International Space Station and our plan to launch from U.S. soil to there on spacecraft built by American companies. And they’re ready to help lead the first human mission to an asteroid and then on to Mars.”

NASA will discuss its new astronaut recruits during a Google+ Hangout session today (June 17) at 4 p.m. EDT (2000 GMT). You can watch the hangout live here on SPACE.com, or directly at: http://go.nasa.gov/126mOLK.

The new spaceflyer hopefuls were selected from more than 6,000 applications — the second largest applicant pool NASA’s ever had. With the new class being evenly split between men and women, it represents the largest percentage of female astronaut candidates in any new class.

The last new cohort of NASA astronauts was selected in 2009, and included nine new candidates. They officially graduated in November 2011, but none have flown to space yet. Michael Hopkins will be the first of that group to fly when he launches in September to the International Space Station.

The new candidates, NASA’s 21st astronaut class, will report to the Johnson Space Center for training in August.

“This year we have selected eight highly qualified individuals who have demonstrated impressive strengths academically, operationally and physically,” said Janet Kavandi, director of Flight Crew Operations at Johnson Space Center. “They have diverse backgrounds and skill sets that will contribute greatly to the existing astronaut corps. Based on their incredible experiences to date, I have every confidence that they will apply their combined expertise and talents to achieve great things for NASA and this country in the pursuit of human exploration.”

The new candidates, as described by NASA, are:

  • Josh A. Cassada, Ph.D., 39, is originally from White Bear Lake, Minn. Cassada is a former naval aviator who holds an undergraduate degree from Albion College, and advanced degrees from the University of Rochester, N.Y. Cassada is a physicist by training and currently is serving as co-founder and Chief Technology Officer for Quantum Opus.
  • Victor J. Glover, 37, Lt. Commander, U.S. Navy, hails from Pomona, Calif., and Prosper, Texas. He is an F/A-18 pilot and graduate of the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School, Edwards, Calif. Glover holds degrees from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, Calif.; Air University and the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, Calif. He currently is serving as a Navy Legislative Fellow in the U.S. Congress.
  • Tyler N. (Nick) Hague, 37, Lt. Colonel, U.S. Air Force, calls Hoxie, Kan., home. He is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo.; Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Mass., and the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School, Edwards, Calif. Hague currently is supporting the Department of Defense as Deputy Chief of the Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization.
  • Christina M. Hammock, 34, calls Jacksonville, N.C., home. Hammock holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from North Carolina State University, Raleigh, N.C. She currently is serving as National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration Station Chief in American Samoa.
  • Nicole Aunapu Mann, 35, Major, U.S. Marine Corps, originally is from Penngrove, Calif. She is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Stanford University and the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School, Patuxent River, Md. Mann is an F/A 18 pilot, currently serving as an Integrated Product Team Lead at the U.S. Naval Air Station, Patuxent River.
  • Anne C. McClain, 34, Major, U.S. Army, lists her hometown as Spokane, Wash. She is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.; the University of Bath and the University of Bristol, both in the United Kingdom. McClain is an OH-58 helicopter pilot, and a recent graduate of the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School at Naval Air Station, Patuxent River.
  • Jessica U. Meir, Ph.D., 35, is from Caribou, Maine. She is a graduate of Brown University, has an advanced degree from the International Space University, and earned her doctorate from Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Meir currently is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesia at Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston.
  • Andrew R. Morgan, M.D., 37, Major, U.S. Army, considers New Castle, Pa., home. Morgan is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and earned a doctorate of medicine from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Bethesda, Md. He has experience as an emergency physician and flight surgeon for the Army special operations community, and currently is completing a sports medicine fellowship.

NASA’s astronaut corps began in 1959 with the announcement of the first seven astronauts, the Mercury Seven, who flew on the first U.S. space missions.

The Miss Universe competition will be held in Russia for the first time in its history.

Moscow’s 7,000 capacity Crocus City Hall will host the pageant on Nov. 9, 2013, the venue said in a press release.

Donald Trump, who owns the competition, made the announcement live on air during the transmission of the Miss USA event in Las Vegas on Sunday.

Women from 90 countries will compete for the title, watched by more than a billion viewers worldwide.

At a press conference following the announcement Donald Trump spoke of his joy at the fact that the competition will be in Russia. “I am convinced that it will be the biggest and best Miss Universe that you have ever seen,” he said.

Miss Universe began in 1952 as a local “bathing beauty” competition set up by a swimwear company in Long Beach, California. Trump, who has owned the competition since 1996, now runs it in partnership with U.S. television network NBC.

It should not be confused with the Miss World pageant, which began a year earlier in 1951 as part of the Festival of Britain.

The one and only Russian winner of the event was Oksana Fedorova in 2002.

Olivia Culpo, an American, is the current holder of the title.

June 18, 2013              8:55 AM

“Three months ago, the journey began,” host Carson Daly wantonly reminded us as the final night of The Voice performances kicked off. And, yes, we have all indeed sat through three months’ worth of blind auditions, battle rounds, live shows, judges’ egos and Blake Shelton’s quest for world domination, among other things. But now, the end is nigh, and we’re mere hours away from crowning a Season Four winner.

With Adam Levine and Shakira having been knocked out of the race last week, evil mastermind Blake and Usher were left to face off, with each of the remaining three contestants singing three songs each. So, who will walk away the winner? Let’s break it down.

Team Blake’s Swon Brothers – the first-ever duo to make it to the finals – can do no wrong. Each week their fan base seemingly grows, culminating with them nearly topping the iTunes songs chart last week with the Loggins and Messina (by way of Anne Murray) tune “Danny’s Song,” which they reprised Monday night as their “defining moment” of the season. They also sang the falsetto-heavyEagles track “I Can’t Tell You Why” and hammed it up alongside Blake on Brad Paisley’s “Celebrity,” in which Shelton gave a wink and nod to his rising star status with a huge grin while singing: “I’ll make the supermarket tabloids, they’ll write some awful stuff; but the more they run my name down, the more my price goes up.”

Why they will win: Never underestimate the power and appeal of White Guys With Guitars on these types of reality competition shows. (See: Seasons seven through 11 of American Idol.) After weeks of middling out in the 30s on the iTunes chart, they suddenly shot up to Number Two last week, overtaking everyone else on the show. This week they’ve done almost as well, making them the latest dark horse of the competition.

Why they won’t win: The producers of The Voice have given them the opening “death slot” two weeks in a row, leaving them with an uphill battle to fight. That said, they bucked the trend last week and came out on top – which makes us wonder if they’re the real ones to beat and the show’s slowing them down to move the others to the head of the class. Still, it’s hard to contend with the fact that they finished all three of their songs 80 minutes into a 120-minute show.

Meanwhile, Team Usher’s Michelle Chamuel has moved from dark horse to frontrunner over the course of the past few weeks, moving into the upper echelon of the iTunes chart with her take on Taylor Swift’s “I Knew You Were Trouble” two weeks ago. She took on the song again as her defining moment this season, since “defining moment” apparently means “highest-charting song.” She also tackled Annie Lennox’s “Why” and did a duet with Usher on U2’s “One,” a strange song choice considering Usher isn’t best known for power ballads. (Why didn’t he choose something more upbeat that would have shown off both their strong points?)

Why she will win: America loves an underdog, and Michelle certainly carried that torch this season. Watching her go from Geeky Girl With Glasses to Bona Fide Rock Star was quite an impressive journey. Plus, she’s by far the most entertaining contestant to watch in terms of stage presence, proving she’s the overall package.

Why she won’t win: As exemplified by his choice of “One,” Usher has picked some questionable songs for Michelle over the course of the season, focusing far too much on ballads when she’s better suited for uptempo fare. Still, it’s gotten her this far. So the real culprit here if she loses is that indie rock can’t compete against country music when it comes to who mainstream America is willing to vote for.

And then there’s Blake’s Danielle Bradbery, the 16-year-old cutie pie with the pitch-perfect country voice who’s been the season-long frontrunner. While it was hard to pick, Blake chose Pam Tillis’ “Maybe It Was Memphis” as Danielle’s defining moment, because it was when she really broke away from the pack. (Again, in terms of charting.) The do-over performance prompted contestant-less Adam to declare that she should be the winner. She also did a borderline creepy duet with Blake on “Timber, I’m Falling in Love” by Patty Loveless and nabbed that coveted pimp spot once again for her take on Sara Evans’ “Born to Fly.”

Why she will win: Two words: Pimp spot. Yes, The Voice would be remiss if they didn’t jam the crown on her head, seeing as the show has yet to produce a huge star – and Danielle could be it. She’s been an almost unstoppable presence on the iTunes chart week after week, leaving everyone else trying to play catch up. And deservedly so, as she’s been consistently good, virtually pitch-perfect all season, and she has a girl-next-door-meets-pageant-queen look that is probably very appealing to a wide swath of viewers.

Why she won’t win: If Danielle does have an Achilles’ heel, it’s her age. So if she happens to fall short, it’s most likely because people think she’s young enough to “have another shot” at fame.

So, there you have it, folks. Seems like a win-win-win no matter who wins, right?

On the day Montreal mayor Michael Applebaum was arrested, lawyer Mélanie Joly confirmed that she will run for city hall’s top position in the November elections.

“I cannot accept seeing the city that I love dragged into contempt, stagnation and corruption. I think Montrealers no longer recognize their city and its administration. I think Montrealers are stronger than partisan politics,” said Joly.

The 34-year-old Joly resigned from the public relations firm Cohn & Wolfe few weeks ago to begin her mayoral campaign.

Joly says she believes Applebaum should resign as mayor.

pennsylvania_bank_robbery_061613.jpg

06/17/13               02:39 PM ET EDT

A Pennsylvania bank robber fatally shot a supermarket customer who ran after him and tried to stop his getaway car, police said.

South Strabane Township police identified the dead man as Vincent Kelley, 46, of Washington, Pa.

Kelley and his friend Jared Cameron, 21, were shopping at the Giant Eagle in Strabane Square when police said the man robbed an in-store Citizens Bank branch about 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

“I saw him with his umbrella open, and it looked suspicious. It caught my eye,” Cameron said of the robber. “I just kind of ignored it for a minute and then I heard a scream from the bank.”

The robber, dressed in black and disguised by a mask and a large, light-colored floppy hat, jumped back over the bank counter with a duffel bag full of money over his shoulder and Kelley gave chase, Cameron said.

“The guy pulled the gun on Vinnie right outside the store, and Vinnie didn’t stop. He just kept going and I followed right behind him,” Cameron said. The robber started driving away while Kelley jumped into the car and grabbed for a knife he kept on his belt.

“When he reached for his belt, the guy reached up behind his head over the seat and shot off six rounds out of his gun,” Cameron said.

Kelley fell out of the car as the suspect drove away – though police believe the white compact car should be easy to identify because a red dye pack hidden in the money exploded.

“I certainly applaud a citizen’s efforts to help society, but you see the ramifications,” police Chief Donald Zofchak said. “It cost him his life.”

Kelley’s 19-year-old daughter, Sierra, said she has planned to have a Father’s Day meal with him later that day.

“He’s a hero for what he did today. I don’t know what happened, but this is Father’s Day and he’s supposed to be with me,” Sierra Kelley told reporters. “I want whoever did this to know how much it hurts.”

Police released a photo from the bank’s surveillance camera, hoping the robber’s get-up might help the public recognize him, but the suspect’s face cannot be seen in it. Police were reviewing the surveillance video for additional clues and said they may release it Tuesday.

Miss USA Contestants

Sunday June 16, 2013

A field of 51 beauty queens from every U.S. state and the District of Columbia are set to compete for the 62nd Miss USA title Sunday.

The contestants will strut across the stage at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip.

The woman crowned the 2013 Miss USA winner will replace reigning queen Nana Meriwether and go on to compete in the Miss Universe pageant.

The night’s winner also becomes a spokeswoman for breast and ovarian cancer awareness and other causes, while traveling to promote the organization.

The beauty queens will battle it out in three competitions: swimsuit, evening gown and interview question.

Contestants will be whittled to 15 following the show’s opening number, in which the beauty queens introduce themselves one-by-one.

Most of the competitors will be quickly sent home. The top 16 were picked by preliminary judges through competitions and interviews during the week before the telecast.

Celebrity judges including fashion designer Betsey Johnson, “Biggest Loser” star Bob Harper and “Wait Wait … Don’t Tell Me” personality Mo Rocca will then pick the top eight after the swimsuit competition. The judge panel will narrow it down to a top 4 after the evening gown portion.
