Eleanor Catton was awarded the Man Booker Prize on Tuesday for “The Luminaries,” an immersive tale set in 19th-century New Zealand that explores identity, greed and human frailty.

At 28, Ms. Catton is the youngest winner of the Booker. She was born in Canada and raised in Christchurch, New Zealand.

The Booker is Britain’s most prestigious literary prize, awarded annually to a novelist from Britain, Ireland or a Commonwealth country. The winner receives £50,000, or about $80,000.

Looking stunned after being named the winner, Ms. Catton said that her lengthy, complex novel was “a publisher’s nightmare.”

She then thanked her publishers for striking the “elegant balance between making art and making money.”

The book was released by Granta in Britain and Little, Brown and Company in the United States. At 848 pages, it is the longest book to win the Booker Prize.

The other nominees were “We Need New Names,” by NoViolet Bulawayo, a debut novel about a 10-year-old girl who journeys from Zimbabwe to the United States; “Harvest,” by Jim Crace, a dark, vividly drawn novel about the inhabitants of a small village; “A Tale for the Time Being,” by Ruth Ozeki, about a discovered diary that links people in distant cities; “The Lowland,” by Jhumpa Lahiri, about brothers living in post-colonial India; and “The Testament of Mary,” by Colm Toibin, a slim, 81-page portrait of Mary, the mother of Jesus.

This year’s ceremony, broadcast live from Guildhall in London, was especially momentous because it was the last year before the award is opened to entries from the United States and beyond.

In September, the Booker Prize Foundation announced that in 2014 the prize would be open to all novels written in English and published in Britain, no matter the nationality of the author.

That decision prompted hand-wringing from many in the literary world in Britain, who worried that the reconceived Booker would be limited in its potential to discover and anoint new and unknown authors.

Jonathan Taylor, chairman of the foundation, wrote at the time: “Paradoxically it has not been allowed full participation to all those writing literary fiction in English. It is rather as if the Chinese were excluded from the Olympic Games.”

The winner is selected by the judging panel on the day of the ceremony.

Ms. Catton’s first novel, “The Rehearsal,” was widely praised and nominated for awards including the Orange Prize and the Dylan Thomas Prize. She studied at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and was 25 when she began writing “The Luminaries.”

Despite her age, “Maturity is evident in every sentence, in the rhythms and balances,” said Robert Macfarlane, chairman of the judges. “It is a novel of astonishing control.”

Writing in The Guardian, Kirsty Gunn called “The Luminaries” a “consummate literary page-turner.” “Catton has created her own world in ‘The Luminaries’ — an upside-down, Southern Hemisphere kind of a place with its own astrological calendar that casts its own kind of influence, its own light.”

The Booker bestows an author with an instant boost in sales and recognition.

Some of Britain’s most revered authors, including Peter Carey, Ian McEwan and Julian Barnes, have won the prize.

Last year, the prize was given to Hilary Mantel for “Bring Up the Bodies,” her second Booker victory. She previously won in 2009, for “Wolf Hall,” the first book in her planned trilogy about Thomas Cromwell.

A MELBOURNE doctor who refused to refer a couple for an abortion because they wanted only a boy has admitted he could face tough sanctions.

Dr Mark Hobart fears he could be punished for refusing to give the Melbourne couple a referral after discovering they were seeking an abortion because they didn’t want to have a girl.

By refusing to provide a referral for a patient on moral grounds or refer the matter to another doctor, Dr Hobart admits he has broken the law and could face suspension, conditions on his ability to practice or even be deregistered.

But he was willing to risk punishment in pursuit of principles. He said he did not believe any doctor in Victoria would have helped a couple have an abortion just because they wanted a boy.

“I’ve got a conscientious objection to abortion, I’ve refused to refer in this case a woman for abortion and it appears that I have broken the rules,” he said.

“But just because it’s the law doesn’t mean it’s right.”

The Sunday Herald Sun yesterday revealed the couple had asked Dr Hobart to refer them to an abortion clinic after discovering at 19 weeks they were having a girl when they wanted a boy.

Victoria’s Abortion Law Reform Act 2008 specifies the obligations of registered health practitioners who have a “conscientious objection” to abortion.

Under the Act, if a woman requests a doctor to advise on a proposed abortion and the practitioner has a conscientious objection, he or she must refer the woman to a practitioner who does not conscientiously object.

“That is the letter of the law,” he said. “It leaves me in limbo.

“It’s never been tested … it is a very complicated area.”

Medical Practitioners Board spokeswoman Nicole Newton said doctors were bound by the law and a professional code of conduct.

“The board expects practitioners to practise lawfully and to provide safe care and to meet the standards set out in the board’s code of conduct,” she said.

Another doctor who was brought before the Medical Board in January for airing his views against abortion was cautioned and warned he could be deregistered if it happened again.

Short-track fans at Daytona International Speedway and a national television audience were treated to a dramatic late-race duel between Kyle Larson and C.E. Falk in the NASCAR All-American Tour Late Model race on Monday night. Larson won the race but controversy raged to kick off the two-day Battle at the Beach short track event at the World Center of Racing.

Larson trailed Falk with six laps to go and appeared to make his move too soon, getting under Falk and passing him off the exit of turn two. Falk immediately ducked under Larson and retook the point, going into turns three and four. Larson closely trailed Falk until the last lap when, using the lap car of Trey Gibson as a pic, he got behind Falk and turned him before the start/finish line.

Larson crossed the line first and Falk scrambled to finish third, just behind the surging Ben Rhodes who led the most laps and beat Falk to the checkered flag. Falk had every right to be furious but was surprisingly calm following the race.

“Look, I’m not a 15-year-old kid anymore,” Falk said. “I’m 25 years old and I want to be in this sport for a long time. I can’t get there by acting like a spoiled brat. I had a moment to vent when I walked over to turn 1 and that was it. When you have the cameras on you like this, you need to be a professional. Kids were watching this race, especially on Speed on a Monday night, and they’re looking for someone to look up to.”

Ultimately, Falk believes there wasn’t much more he could have done. He wishes Larson hadn’t turned him but, on the last lap at a short track, Falk said that anything goes.

“I was staying on the brakes as long as I could,” Falk said. “I’ve been short track racing for a long time and on the last lap, when you’re two car-lengths ahead, you’re pretty much free game up front — you’re just a sitting duck… I just tried to protect the bottom best I could and tried to cut the corner and get around that tire barrier but he got into me once, thought I would be OK, and the wheels were just spinning.

“He got into me that last time and he turned me at the line. I wish he hadn’t done that but on the last lap, it’s anything goes.”

Larson admits that he was too aggressive at the end – dirty even – but did what he had to do to win the trophy, a replica of those handed to the winner of the Grand National races held on beach circuit in NASCAR’s youth.

“I don’t do a lot of short track racing,” Larson said. “But every video I’ve ever seen of it, the second-place driver wins in this scenario. I did what I think C.E. would have done to me if the positions were reversed.”

Both drivers had used up most of their brakes at the end of the race, with Larson saying he had to lean back into the seat just to put pressure on his brake pads. Decreased brakes forced the drivers to let off the throttle early to get a better entry and thus resulted in some of the contact between the two at the end.

“I hit the center of his bumper and got up underneath him and just turned him around,” Larson said. “I feel bad for him but we were coming to the finish line.”

A Southern Oregon man who was laid off and going back to school had a feeling he should buy a lottery ticket.

The Oregon Lottery says Riley Gunn of Wolf Creek won $1 million in the Jan. 4 Mega Millions drawing, and is now buying a house.

The prize came to $670,000 after taxes. The family picked it up last week in Salem.

Gunn told lottery officials he was thrilled when he initially learned he had won $250,000, but then realized he had chosen the Megaplier option, which multiplied his prize by four, for a total of $1 million before taxes.

Gunn bought the $8 Quick Pick Mega Millions ticket at the Lil’ Pantry Market & Deli in Merlin, which is about 5 miles north of Grants Pass.

Sensational claims about Justin Bieber smoking marijuana on the day a paparazzo was killed attempting to photograph the star have resurfaced after pictures of the singer emerged smoking at a party.

The 18-year-old heartthrob is seen holding what TMZ suggests is a roll-up as he chats with friends inside a hotel room in Newport Beach, California.

According to the website, the pictures were taken on January 2 – the day after 29-year-old Chris Guerra was hit by an oncoming vehicle in Los Angeles after taking pictures of singer’s white Ferrari.

Cause for controversy: Justin Bieber was photographed holding a cigarette during a party in Newport Beach, California on January 2
Cause for controversy: Justin Bieber was photographed holding a cigarette during a party in Newport Beach, California on January 2

According to TMZ, Guerra claimed just hours before he died that he saw the pop star smoking cannabis through a pipe in the vehicle. Bieber was not behind the wheel at the time he was killed.

The singer’s friend, 19-year-old rapper Lil Twist, was reportedly driving Bieber’s $200,000 Ferrari and was stopped by police when Guerra rushed to the scene and was told by authorities to step back.

Sources at the Newport Beach party told the website Twist was also there.

Bieber seems little worried about the previous night’s tragic events, and was laughing heartily as he held the cigarette while his peers drank beer.

A fit of the giggles: Justin seemed to find something extremely funny as he laughed with friends

The insiders claim Lil Twist and his brother were rolling all cigarettes and passing them around, resulting in ‘a lot of pot smoke’.

It is also alleged no one seemed to mind the photographs being taken, despite security being present.

Bieber apparently complained about how tired he was because he’d been staying up late recently, and went on to ask about how he could find some late night fast food.

Controversy is surrounding the star as of late, with fresh claims Bieber has again split from longtime girlfriend Selena Gomez. Reports suggest a mystery girl slept in the hotel room the evening the photographs were taken, though it is unclear if anything untoward happened.

Freelance photographer Guerra was tailing Bieber’s white 458 Italia Ferrari when it was pulled over by California Highway Patrol officers in Los Angeles.

He got out of his car to take pictures but was struck by a Toyota Highlander SUV as he was running back to his own vehicle after being told to return to his vehicle repeatedly by police.

According to TMZ, the Bieber source at the time said there are multiple witnesses to say the only time Justin left the Four Seasons hotel on New Year’s Day was to go to Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles in Hollywood for lunch.

Guerra is also said to have told a friend he saw a car belonging to Selena Gomez at the Four Seasons.

But the Bieber source claims this was another lie and that Gomez and Bieber had argued on December 30 after flying out to Mexico for New Year’s Eve and had subsequently split up.

Lt Gen Abulaziz al-Shalal

26 December 2012             07:46 ET

The commander of Syria’s military police has defected from President Bashar-al Assad’s government and reportedly fled to Turkey.

Lt Gen Abulaziz al-Shalal is one of the highest-ranking officials to join the uprising against the Syrian regime.

In a statement posted on YouTube, the officer said the army had deviated from its primary duty of protecting the country and had transformed into “gangs of killing and destruction”.

He went on to say the army had “destroyed cities and villages and has committed massacres against an unarmed population”.

On a cold November night in Times Square, Officer Lawrence DePrimo was working a counterterrorism post when he encountered an older, barefooted homeless man. The officer disappeared for a moment, then returned with a new pair of boots, and knelt to help the man put them on.

Readers’ Comments

The act of kindness would have gone unnoticed and mostly forgotten, had it not been for a tourist from Arizona.

Her snapshot — taken with her cellphone on Nov. 14 and posted to the New York Police Department’s official Facebook page late Tuesday — has made Officer DePrimo an overnight Internet hero.

By Wednesday evening, the post had been viewed 1.6 million times, and had attracted nearly 275,000 “likes” and more than 16,000 comments — a runaway hit for a Police Department that waded warily onto the social media platform this summer with mostly canned photos of gun seizures, award ceremonies and the police commissioner.

Among all of those posts, the blurry image of Officer DePrimo kneeling to help the shoeless man as he sat on 42nd Street stood out. “This is definitely the most viral,” said Barbara Chen, a spokeswoman for the department who helps manage its Facebook page.

Thousands of people commented on Facebook and Reddit, which linked to the post on Wednesday. Most of them praised Officer DePrimo, yet some suspected that the photograph had been staged. Many debated whether the officer’s actions were representative of police officers in general, or were just unusually exceptional.

“I still have a grudge against law enforcement everywhere,” wrote one commenter on the police Facebook page. “But my respects to that fine officer.”

Officer DePrimo, 25, who joined the department in 2010 and lives with his parents on Long Island, was shocked at the attention. He was not warned before the photo went online; the department had not learned which officer was in the picture until hours later.

The officer, normally assigned to the Sixth Precinct in the West Village, readily recalled the encounter. “It was freezing out and you could see the blisters on the man’s feet,” he said in an interview. “I had two pairs of socks and I was still cold.” They started talking; he found out the man’s shoe size: 12.

As the man walked slowly down Seventh Avenue on his heels, Officer DePrimo went into a Skechers shoe store at about 9:30 p.m. “We were just kind of shocked,” said Jose Cano, 28, a manager working at the store that night. “Most of us are New Yorkers and we just kind of pass by that kind of thing. Especially in this neighborhood.”

Mr. Cano volunteered to give the officer his employee discount to bring down the regular $100 price of the all-weather boots to a little more than $75. The officer has kept the receipt in his vest since then, he said, “to remind me that sometimes people have it worse.”

The photo was taken by Jennifer Foster, a civilian communications director for the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office in Arizona. She said the moment resonated for personal reasons: She remembered as a young girl seeing her father, a 32-year veteran of the Phoenix police force, buy food for a homeless man.

“He squatted down, just like this officer,” she said.

After returning from vacation, she described the picture in an e-mail to the New York Police Department, thinking of it as a sort of a compliment card. She never expected the picture to end up online — “I’m not on Facebook,” she said — but a department official e-mailed her and asked if she would send along the photo so it could be posted.

As for the man he helped, Officer DePrimo never got his name, and he could not be immediately located on Wednesday. “He was the most polite gentleman I had met,” the officer said, adding that the man’s face lit up at the sight of the boots. Officer DePrimo offered him a cup of coffee, but “as soon as the boots were on him, he went on his way, and I just went back to my post.”
