Naked and Afraid is billed as taking ‘survival of the fittest’ to the next level – and dubbed ‘the Everest of survival challenges’.

Each week, a new pair of complete and total strangers – one man and one woman – will find themselves stranded in and, quite literally, exposed to some of the world’s most extreme weather environments.

Each duo will be left high and dry with no food, no water and and no clothes. They must survive on their own for a full 21 days, with nothing but one personal item each.

Tune in Sunday, June 23rd at 10:20|9:20c

June 19, 2013              10:42 AM ET

Bob Rae, who served as interim Liberal leader following the party’s disastrous showing in the 2011 election, is stepping down as an MP, CBC News has learned.

Rae told his Liberal colleagues of his decision during Wednesday’s party caucus meeting, an announcement that was met with tears and applause, according to sources.

Rae recently accepted the role of chief negotiator for First Nations in talks with the Ontario government about development of the Ring of Fire, and is to tour the nine Matawa communities in the mining and resource-rich area of Northern Ontario this summer. Rae is a former NDP premier of the province.

At a news conference with Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau in the foyer of the House of Commons, Rae said that work as a lawyer and mediator was taking more and more of his time and he felt he needed to focus on his role with the First Nations. He didn’t say when his resignation would be effective.

“This is not about money, this is about time. I’m not being paid for my work in the North,” Rae said, adding that his decision was about, “How can I effectively serve the interests of the people I’ve been asked to serve?”

Rae thanked his caucus colleagues and said “above all, I want to thank my leader,” saying he has enjoyed his time working with Trudeau.

“I’m quite confident that Mr. Trudeau will become the prime minister of Canada,” Rae said.

Trudeau said he was saddened by Rae’s decision, and that he will miss Rae’s “wise counsel.”

“We will miss his passion,” Trudeau said.

“I am not letting him go far, [Rae] will continue be a valued friend, ally and resource for all Liberals in this country as we continue to build a brighter future for all Canadians,” he added.

Rae recalled his days as a young NDP MP opposite Trudeau’s father, former prime minister Pierre Trudeau. He said the rhetoric could get heated then but was not as calculated as the attacks he has seen recently in Parliament.

“We are in a particularly tough period but we’ll get through it,” Rae said, adding he hopes that over the summer the parties will realize that it can’t go on this way. “I think the public hates this stuff.”

He lauded Trudeau for remaining resilient in the face of personal attacks.

Many Conservatives were among those reacting to the news of Rae’s decision, including Heritage Minister James Moore.

“Wishing Bob all the best as he begins the next chapter of his life. One [of] Parliament’s most passionate & effective voices,” Moore tweeted.

NDP MP, Ontario premier

Rae has left politics before, but this leave-taking may well be the last one. His political career has spanned generations, and crossed party lines and provincial and federal jurisdictions.

He first arrived in Ottawa as an MP for the federal NDP in 1978 and stayed for four years. He left Parliament Hill to head the Ontario NDP, and in 1990 became the premier of the province on an election day that saw some people in Toronto dancing in the streets until late into the night.

The honeymoon with some of his supporters during his tenure as premier faded as unhappiness grew over his economic policies, particularly over what came to be known as “Rae days,” in which civil servants were forced to take unpaid leave.

He was defeated in the next provincial election and after a long stint as a negotiator, he joined the Liberal Party and ran in the 2006 Liberal leadership race. He came third, finishing behind his old college roommate Michael Ignatieff and the winner Stéphane Dion.

He then ran in the 2008 general election, winning the Toronto riding of Toronto Centre. He was set to run for the Liberal leadership again at the end of that year, after Dion resigned, but withdrew. Ignatieff then took over the reins of the party.

After Ignatieff resigned following the disastrous showing for the Liberals in the 2011 election, Rae became interim leader of the party. There were strong rumours he would run again for the leadership, but he announced he would not seek the post that Trudeau handily won in April.

The Miss Universe competition will be held in Russia for the first time in its history.

Moscow’s 7,000 capacity Crocus City Hall will host the pageant on Nov. 9, 2013, the venue said in a press release.

Donald Trump, who owns the competition, made the announcement live on air during the transmission of the Miss USA event in Las Vegas on Sunday.

Women from 90 countries will compete for the title, watched by more than a billion viewers worldwide.

At a press conference following the announcement Donald Trump spoke of his joy at the fact that the competition will be in Russia. “I am convinced that it will be the biggest and best Miss Universe that you have ever seen,” he said.

Miss Universe began in 1952 as a local “bathing beauty” competition set up by a swimwear company in Long Beach, California. Trump, who has owned the competition since 1996, now runs it in partnership with U.S. television network NBC.

It should not be confused with the Miss World pageant, which began a year earlier in 1951 as part of the Festival of Britain.

The one and only Russian winner of the event was Oksana Fedorova in 2002.

Olivia Culpo, an American, is the current holder of the title.

June 13, 2013

As the sound of thunder echoed outside United Center, the Blackhawks and the Bruins, with a combined 175 years of history, faced off for the first time in the Stanley Cup finals.

Game 1 proved to be a match for the ages. Beginning on Wednesday night, the contest did not end until 1 a.m. Eastern on Thursday, when a shot by the Blackhawks’ Michal Rozsival was deflected first by the stick of Dave Bolland, then by the knee of Andrew Shaw, and sailed past Boston goalie Tuukka Rask at 12 minutes 8 seconds of the third overtime period. Shaw’s goal gave Chicago a 4-3 victory.

It was the longest game of the 2013 season, and the fifth-longest game in Stanley Cup finals history. The game’s time of 112:08 fell just short of the 113:50 of Game 3 of the 1931 finals, when the Blackhawks beat the Montreal Canadiens, 2-1.

“I just got lucky, and it went in,” Shaw said after the marathon ended, and the Blackhawks completed a comeback from a 3-1 third-period deficit. Shaw is best known for being a pest and an agitator. But in these playoffs he has 5 goals and 4 assists in 18 games.

The Blackhawks and the Bruins will now recuperate before meeting again here on Saturday night.

Joel Quenneville, the Chicago coach, pointed out that the teams played almost two full games, and the statistics showed it. Rask stopped 59 of 63 shots, and Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford turned aside 51 of 54 shots. In all, the Blackhawks attempted 132 shots to Boston’s 85.

The Bruins blocked 40 Chicago shots, led by defenseman Dennis Seidenberg, with 9, and Andrew Ference, with 8. Ference had a game-high 10 hits, while three Blackhawks had nine apiece. Chicago defenseman Duncan Keith led all skaters with 48:40 of ice time, and Seidenberg was next at 48:36.

Chicago forward Marian Hossa led all shooters with 10 shots on goal, followed by the Chicago rookie Brandon Saad, who had nine. The teams took 114 face-offs, with the Bruins winning 58 and the Blackhawks winning 56. The exhausted Blackhawks took two penalties during overtime for too many men on the ice.

“Obviously that kind of thing is going to set in — that’s the reality,” said the Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews, who had 52 shifts. “Both teams are just kicking, trying to survive. Every time you go back on the ice, you try and get that feeling that it’s going to be that one chance that makes the difference.”

In the second extra period, each weary team took 10 shots. With 53 seconds left in the session, the Blackhawks took their second too-many-men-on-the-ice overtime penalty. The 6-foot-9 defenseman Zdeno Chara took a blast from inside the blue line with 10 seconds remaining, and the puck deflected off Jaromir Jagr and slammed inside the goal post behind Corey Crawford and skittered across the crease.

The Bruins sustained a blow during the first overtime when wing Nathan Horton left the game with a shoulder injury, which many have speculated he has been playing with in the playoffs. Horton is the N.H.L.’s postseason plus-minus leader with a plus-22 mark.

Bruins Coach Claude Julien said it was too soon to characterize the extent of Horton’s injury. But he said he was not upset by the defeat.

“It could have gone either way,” he said. “With a little bit of luck, we could have ended it before they did. But that’s the name of the game.”

In the second overtime period, Bruins forward Kaspars Daugavins almost won the game, but his shot at an open net was thwarted by Blackhawks defenseman Johnny Oduya.

“I missed my shot,” Daugavins said after the game, nearly distraught. “It hurts.”

Well into the third period, it looked as if the Bruins would run away with the game. Milan Lucic staked Boston to a 2-0 lead with goals in the first and second periods. Saad halved the Blackhawks’ deficit soon after Lucic’s second goal. But Patrice Bergeron made the score 3-1 with a power-play goal at 6:09 of the third period.

Yet the Blackhawks kept pressing and rallied. They pulled to 3-2 when Bolland scored at the eight-minute mark, and Oduya tied the score at 12:14 when his long slap shot deflected off the skate of Ference and into the Boston net.

With the third goal, the Blackhawks had beaten Rask one more time than the Pittsburgh Penguins had over the four games of the Eastern Conference finals.

As the two Original Six teams met, memories of Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, Bobby Orr and Phil and Tony Esposito filled the air. Outside, a heavy Midwestern storm produced a loud thunderclap that startled fans inside the building.

The Bruins killed off three penalties, including a two-man advantage for 1:17 during the second period. They have now killed off 19 straight penalties, dating to Game 5 of the second round against the Rangers.

The Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs will face off for the NBA title. For the Spurs, it would be the fifth in 15 years. For the Heat, it would be the third in eight and second in a row. Here’s how they match up:

When the Spurs have the ball

Tim Duncan and Tiago Splitter should give San Antonio an advantage in the paint. Heat big men Udonis Haslem and Chris Andersen are tough defenders, but they will struggle to defend the Spurs’ bigger, more skilled big men. Heat star Chris Bosh may take on an increased defensive role against Duncan if that’s the case, and he is a better defender than he gets credit for being.

The Spurs love to spread the ball with quick passes around the perimeter. But that can be a risky proposition against LeBron James and Dwyane Wade. The Heat stars love to grab lazy passes and take them down for fast-break dunks. San Antonio will have to be extremely cautious and may be better off having point guard Tony Parker exploit Mario Chalmers off the dribble. The Heat, though, can counter by putting James or Wade on Parker, overwhelming him with size and athleticism.

When the Heat have the ball

Guarding James and Wade is a bear of a task, but Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green are good one-on-one defenders. The key will be the help defense. Splitter is inconsistent, but Duncan is one of the best in the game at helping his teammates and keeping opponents out of the paint.

The Heat, like the Spurs, have a glut of three-point shooters. But they prefer to get them open with savvy penetration. San Antonio struggled to stop the three-point shooting of the Golden State Warriors in the second round, and Miami offers even more varied looks.

Key matchup: Kawhi Leonard vs. LeBron James

No one can guard James. But Leonard has the strength and quickness to stay with him somewhat. Getting that kind of contribution out of the second-year player would be a huge help. Still, the four-time NBA MVP is about 2 inches and 30 pounds bigger than Leonard, and he showed improving post skills in the Eastern Conference finals vs. the Indiana Pacers.

Overall

When these teams met in the regular season, the Spurs rested their stars for the first meeting and the Heat for the second. So it’s very difficult to figure out how these teams match up. They were two of the three dominant teams this season(along with the Oklahoma City Thunder, who bowed out because of Russell Westbrook’s injury). This matchup would be a great finish to a great season, whether James gets his second ring in a row or Duncan gets the fifth of his career.

You’ve seen a lot of alley-oops from Chris Paul to Blake Griffin over the last two seasons, but unless you’re a Lakers fan, you’re probably not sick of them. We’re to the point where it’s not a highlight every time these guys combine for a sick alley-oop, but this one is pretty great, even by their standards.

By the way, Griffin appeared to be okay after this dunk, even though he went down hard.

May 31, 2013           10:32 AM PT

The B.C. government has officially expressed its opposition to a proposal for the Northern Gateway pipeline project, saying it fails to address the province’s environmental concerns.

The province made the announcement in its final written submission to the Northern Gateway Pipeline Joint Review Panel.

“British Columbia thoroughly reviewed all of the evidence and submissions made to the panel and asked substantive questions about the project, including its route, spill response capacity and financial structure to handle any incidents,” said Environment Minister Terry Lake.

“Our questions were not satisfactorily answered during these hearings.”

Lake said the province has carefully reviewed the evidence presented to the panel.

“The panel must determine if it is appropriate to grant a certificate for the project as currently proposed on the basis of a promise to do more study and planning after the certificate is granted,” Lake said.

“Our government does not believe that a certificate should be granted before these important questions are answered.”

Enbridge to address concerns

The president of Enbridge’s Northern Gateway Pipelines project, John Carruthers, called the B.C. announcement “part of the process.”

“British Columbia needed to submit their evidence. We need to address it. We need to meet with the people of B.C.,” said Carruthers.

B.C.’s 5 conditions

  • Environmental review needs to be passed.
  • World-leading marine oil spill prevention, response.
  • World-leading practices for land oil spill prevention, response.
  • First Nations opportunities, treaty rights respected.
  • Fair share of the fiscal and economic benefits for B.C.

“Even if there’s a positive decision from the Joint Review Panel in December, we still need to meet with the public, meet with the province of B.C. and continue to dialogue with them, engage with them through the further development process, through construction and through operations.”

In a news release, Enbridge executive vice president Janet Holder also said the province’s five conditions can’t be fully met until the end of the review panel process, saying the company is working hard to meet the conditions and earn the confidence of the government and the people of B.C.

“As a British Columbian, I am personally committed, as is Northern Gateway, to building a pipeline project that meets the highest possible safety and environmental standards anywhere in the world and a project that creates new jobs and opportunities for British Columbians,” she said.

“At Northern Gateway, we are driven by our responsibility to do what’s right for B.C.’s economy and for B.C.’s environment.”

The review panel will hear final arguments starting next month, and must present a report to the federal government by the end of the year. The federal government will have the final say on whether the pipeline goes ahead.

Alberta downplays rejection

Alberta’s Environment and Sustainable Resource Development Minister Diana McQueen downplayed B.C.’s rejection of the project, saying the review process would continue.

“Alberta respects the hearing process underway for the Northern Gateway pipeline, and we trust that the panel will make its decisions based on science and all the evidence that has been presented,” said McQueen.

“I understand from B.C.’s announcement today that the government is not comfortable supporting the project as proposed without more assurance that environmental protection and public safety are adequately addressed. B.C., like Alberta, wants to ensure that our energy development is responsible and safe.

“This is an ongoing, federally regulated review and I expect that the concerns brought forward by the government of British Columbia will be discussed and addressed through that forum.”

Federal ministers say process ongoing

Federal Heritage Minister James Moore reacted to the announcement while attending the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Convention underway in Vancouver on Friday. He said his government supports B.C.’s five conditions for heavy oil pipelines, but said it won’t make a decision about Northern Gateway until after the review is over.

“You know we’ll see what it means in the long term. This is the provincial government responding to Enbridge’s request. And we’ll see what Enbridge’s response is going forward. But there are many pathways for Canadian resources to get out of the country, and we’ll see if Enbridge looks at other opportunities.”

Moore says his government supports getting natural resources out of Canada, whether through Northern Gateway, or other projects, but any company must be accountable to the people living where it wants to build.

In a written statement, federal Minister of Natural Resources Joe Oliver said Ottawa will review the panel’s recommendation when it’s released in December.

“We have been clear: resource development will not proceed unless it is safe for Canadians and safe for the environment,” he said.

“That is why, for our part, we are moving forward with our plans to further enhance marine and pipeline safety … We look forward to continued engagement with all provinces on market diversification for oil and gas.”

Colin Kinsley who is chair of the Northern Gateway Alliance, a coalition of pipeline supporters, says he’s extremely disappointed in the government’s position, and questions the timing of the announcement.

“I can’t imagine anybody saying that when the most rigorous, open review process of an industrial project in this country has been going on for over three years, and is in its final concluding processes.”

He thinks final judgment on the project should be reserved until after the panel has made its decision.

‘Little evidence’ about good spill response

On Friday, the province also reiterated the five conditions it says would need to be met in order to approve the pipeline, including top-notch oil spill prevention and response measures.

“Northern Gateway has said that they would provide effective spill response in all cases. However, they have presented little evidence as to how they will respond,” Lake said.

“For that reason, our government cannot support the issuance of a certificate for the pipeline as it was presented to the joint review panel.”

However, the statement from the province goes on to say “the position adopted by B.C. on the Northern Gateway Pipeline project as currently proposed is not a rejection of heavy-oil projects,” keeping the door open to Kinder Morgan’s proposed expansion to the Kinder Morgan pipeline and a $13-billion crude oil refinery near Kitimat proposed by B.C. newspaper publisher David Black.

The $5.5-billion Northern Gateway project aims to construct two pipelines stretching 1,177-kilometres from the Alberta oilsands to a tanker port on the North Coast of B.C. with the capacity to move 525,000 barrels of oil per day.

B.C. is expected to present oral final arguments to the joint review panel in Terrace, B.C., on June 17.

May 21, 2013

In an effort to fight hunger, 13-year-old Kylie Trawick and her dad Bob are going the extra mile in a major way—hiking more than 2,180 miles from Georgia to Maine, at a clip of about 20 miles per day since setting off in late March. And, at 723 miles in, they’ve already surpassed their goal of raising one pound of food for every mile completed. About 4,000 pounds have already been donated in Kylie’s honor to food pantries across the country.

The biggest challenge, as it turns out, has been for Bob, a 50-year-old registered nurse, to keep apace with his daughter. “Kylie is a phenomenal hiker, and she’s never quit anything in her life,” he told Yahoo! Shine by phone from Daleville, Virginia, where the two had stopped to rest and refuel for a couple of nights. “So the truth is, she’s wearing me out. She’s just so fit and strong! It’s the Sassafras Express and I’m clearly at the back.”

Sassafras is Kylie’s self-dubbed trail nickname, while her father’s is the apparently apropos Kaboose. They’ve been using the monikers to document their journey on a blog, “Sassafras and Kaboose 2013 Appalachian Trail Adventure” (and a Facebook page), which is chock full of photos, YouTube videos, details of terrain and weather, and even a complete list of their hiking gear, from a tent and sleeping bags to rain pants, fleece hats, headlamps and a denatured-alcohol fueled camp stove, all carried on their backs. They stop to buy more food every few days, and subsist on staples including mac and cheese, rice, fruit and Kylie favorites like candy bars and Pop-Tarts.

The biggest challenge for Kylie, though, she told Shine, has been, “Just the mindset, hiking day after day.” To get through it, she explained, “I just take it day by day.”

It was Kylie’s Girl Scout troop in New Gloucester, Maine that inspired the teen to get involved with fighting hunger. When it came time to work toward a coveted silver badge, and she discovered that she’d have to work through too much red tape to set up a donation-based project with the Girl Scouts, she decided to launch a solo effort. So she teamed up with both the local New Gloucester Food Pantry and her dad, who had a long-held desire to hike the entire Appalachian Trail. Kylie, an avid hiker since age 7, thought the journey would be a perfect way to raise both awareness and funds. She has asked supporters to donate either money to the New Gloucester pantry or food to their local food banks.

“Local hunger is prevalent in New Gloucester Maine, and has been increasing each year,” she writes on her blog. “Hunger prevents people from reaching their full potential. It is an epidemic that’s threatening our future. One out of every five families goes hungry.”

According to the Rev. Linda Gard, pastor at the New Gloucester First Congregational Church, which houses the food pantry, Kylie’s efforts are already paying off. “I think it captures everybody’s imagination, that a girl like her would take on such an important thing,” Gard told Shine. “She’s an amazing kid. Nothing discourages her.”

Kylie—whose parents say is a great student, despite a learning disability, and who is an athlete who runs track and cross-country and plays softball and basketball—was lucky enough to get permission from the administration at her Gray-New Gloucester Middle School to exchange two months of class time for lessons in the wilderness.

“The school supported her 150 percent with this hike,” Kylie’s mom, Joyce, told Shine via phone. “It’s hard, having them gone, but it’s very exciting.” Though she was unable to join the pair on their journey because of health issues, Joyce, a lab analyst who also has her own clothing line, said they’ve been keeping her busy packing up and mailing them treats and new camping equipment to various P.O. boxes and hostels along the trail.

Though she speaks to her husband and daughter by cell phone at least every couple of days, Joyce, also a hiker, admits she does spend a bit of time worrying. “I know what the dangers are, so I am concerned about that,” she said, explaining that she’d tripped and dislocated her elbow at 4,000 feet on a five-day hike not long ago. “But I also know that their passion for hiking outweighs it.”

The Appalachian Trail, which passes through 14 eastern states from Georgia to Maine, encompasses peaks and valleys from New Hampshire’s Presidential Mountain Range to Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park, and is one of the most challenging hiking trails in the U.S. “Through hikers,” those who go the entire length in one long shot, are an esteemed and supportive bunch, and part of a thriving wilderness subculture. Of the thousands of hikers who attempt to complete the entire trail each year, according to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy website, only about one in four makes it without giving up.

But it’s those fellow hikers—as well as each other—that have been giving Kylie and her dad the extra push to stay positive, they said, and they expect to reach Maine sometime in September.

“The through-hiker culture is open and accepting and just wonderful with Kylie,” Bob said. “And watching her do this has been my biggest joy.”

When asked about the best part of the journey, Kylie told Shine it was not the mountain-top views or the sightings of wild ponies or white-tailed deer, but “the people,” and being with her dad. “We get along very well, and we’re very close,” she said. “Papa and I have been hiking together a long time.”

05/02/13             08:50 PM ET EDT

U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa of Hawaii announced her candidacy for U.S. Senate on Thursday, setting up a primary showdown that almost certainly will be the state’s marquee race next year.

The former state lawmaker starting her second term in Congress will be running against fellow Democrat and incumbent U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz, who was appointed to the post after longtime Sen. Daniel Inouye died in December.

Schatz’s appointment by Gov. Neil Abercrombie came as a surprise to some in Hawaii, after Inouye wrote the governor just before he died saying his last wish was to have Hanabusa named to replace him.

Hanabusa told The Associated Press on Thursday that voters on the islands didn’t have much of a chance to influence Abercrombie’s decision.

“Brian was not elected. He was appointed,” she said. “And I don’t think the people have really had an opportunity to weigh in on who they want to represent them in the United States Senate.”

Schatz is a former lieutenant governor who has already stockpiled more than $1 million in campaign cash and more than a dozen endorsements from key groups. Under Hawaii law, Schatz was sworn in immediately after being appointed for a term to last until the state’s next election – next year’s midterms.

Hawaii’s primary is Aug. 9, 2014. The winner between Schatz and Hanabusa would then need to win a general election against a Republican or other opponents, though no other major candidates have declared themselves in the race. The 2014 winner will hold the seat for two years until 2016, the end of Inouye’s original term.

Hanabusa’s presence in the race gives Schatz a true opponent in a state known to vote heavily Democratic; in an open Senate race last year, Democrat and then-U.S. Rep. Mazie Hirono trounced Republican former Gov. Linda Lingle by double digits.

It’s the first time voters will directly pick a replacement for Inouye.

“We are going to afford them that opportunity,” Hanabusa said.

Hanabusa said that while she disagrees with Abercrombie’s pick of Schatz, she acknowledges it was his decision to fill the seat.

“That doesn’t then somehow say that Brian is entitled to that seat and that he is an incumbent in the true sense of the word,” Hanabusa said.

Schatz’ campaign spokesman Bill Meheula said in a statement that the race will be about the kind of future Hawaii wants for its people and next generation.

“We look forward to sharing the Senator’s work and vision for Hawaii, and we welcome Rep. Hanabusa to the race,” Meheula said.

Earlier Thursday, the campaign announced endorsements of Schatz from the Hawaii Fire Fighters Association and the United Food and Commercial Workers Union.

Hanabusa says Hawaii’s delegation became younger after Inouye died and that she has the most experience of any candidate.

Hanabusa says Inouye’s letter to Abercrombie endorsing her was a high compliment that came after years of conversations she had with Inouye about succession and the right time for her to move from the House to the Senate.

According to the Federal Election Commission, Schatz had $1 million in campaign cash as of March 31, compared with nearly $249,000 for Hanabusa. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee plans to back Schatz.

Hanabusa said she doesn’t think her Senate run will cost Democrats a seat in the House.

Orb

6:40 p.m. EDT              May 1, 2013
Orb and Verrazano, tied for first in the new points system that determined this year’s Kentucky Derby qualifiers, both drew outside positions in Wednesday’s starting gate draw.

Orb, trained by Kentuckian Shug McGaughey and ridden Joel Rosario, drew the No. 16 position, which is in the auxiliary starting gate.

After the draw, Orb was installed as the 7-2 morning line favorite to win the race, followed by Verrazano at 4-1. Goldencents came after that at t 5-1.

“I like being the favorite. I like being the favorite in every race I’m in because there’s a reason why you’re the favorite,” said McGaughey.

Mylute, to be ridden by Rosie Napravnik, drew the No. 6 position. The odds on Mylute were set at 15-1. Napravnik can become the first female jockey to win the Derby.

Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens, out of retirement after seven years away from racing, will be in the No. 2 position with Oxbow. Stevens is a three-time Derby winner, and Oxbow is trained by Hall of Fame D. Wayne Lukas, four-time Derby winner.

In the 4th spot among the favorites (10-1) will be Revolutionary, who will start in the No. 3 position. Revolutionary, another Pletcher-trained entry, will be ridden by three-time Derby winning jockey Calvin Borel.

Verrazano, one of five Derby entrants trained by Todd Pletcher and to be ridden by John Velasquez, drew the No. 14 spot, the widest position in the main starting gate. Velasquez sustained a cracked rib and a chipped bone in his wrist in a fall on April 7.

Orb and Verrazano both totaled 150 points in the pre-Derby standings, based on performances in specified races. The Derby qualifiers had previously been decided by earning in graded-stakes races.

“It was a great post position. We got everything we wanted,” said trainer Todd Pletcher, who has five horses entered in the race, including Verrazano.

Goldcents, third in the points and co-owned by Louisville basketball Coach Rick Pitino, drew the No. 8 position. Goldencents is trained by Doug O’Neill, winner of last year’s Derby with I’ll Have Another. He will be ridden by Kevin Krigger, bidding to become the first African-American jockey to win the Derby since 1902.

The Washington Redskins didn’t have a first-round pick in this year’s NFL draft. They traded it away last year as part of the deal that landed them quarterback Robert Griffin III. That meant that each of their NFC East rivals got to pick twice before the Redskins’ first pick of the draft rolled around. It was the 19th pick of the second round, the 51st overall, and with it they addressed one of their most significant positional needs with the selection of North Carolina State cornerback David Amerson.

Interesting choice, and one that seems to be based on size, upside and college production. Amerson was the No. 15-ranked cornerback in this draft according to Scouts Inc., but the Redskins made him the seventh one taken, passing over the likes of Blidi Wreh-Wilson,Robert AlfordB.w. Webb and of course Tyrann Mathieu. But at 6-foot-1, 205 pounds, he’s bigger than all of those players.

The knock on Amerson is inconsistency in coverage, which is sure to frustrate Redskins fans unless it’s fixable by Raheem Morris at the pro level. But they had to like the 18 interceptions he made in his last two college seasons as proof that he knows how to make a play. Reading the scouting reports and descriptions of him, the way he plays could well remind you of current Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall — a playmaker liable to make a brilliant interception but just as susceptible to mistakes that result in big plays. The goal will of course be to improve his discipline in coverage, but in the meantime they have a guy who can potentially make a game-changing impact at any time.

It’s the homestretch of NFL draft preparation. We are at Saturday morning, and the draft begins on Thursday night. I have said it before, and I will say it again, this is a great time of the year. No matter how the previous season ended, this is a great time to be a fan of the Jets, or any team. We are all 0-0, and this is the time where our teams get prepared for battle. And it is fun. Anyone who has been following this site knows, as the draft has been approaching, we are taking a look at players the Jets have had in for workouts, and talked about whether they would be a decent investment for the Jets. We continue that trend this morning, where we take a look at a guy that announced via Twitter he was coming to visit the Jets. The Jets need depth on the offensive line, and here is a candidate that would provide just that. Today we look at Oday Aboushi from the University of Virginia.

MEASURABLES

Oday Aboushi measures in at 6’5″, 308 pounds.  At the NFL Combine, he ran the forty yard dash in 5.45 seconds.

Take a look at his full profile from our friends at nflmocks.com.

PROS: Size sticks out to me initially with this guy. He could add some girth, being only 308 pounds, but 6’5″ is a reasonable height to get the job done. He is strong enough to take his opponent out of the play in run blocking, leading him out of the play.

CONS: First thing he needs to improve his footwork. It sometimes is great, sometimes, not so much. It became more obvious to me in the passing game, where the defender used it to get past him fairly easily. More size will help him stand his ground against rushers as well.

Depth is depth, and you can never have too much of it. But, I am not sure how “NFL ready” this young man really is. I don’t know that he will be ready to make this team so fast right away. But as I said, depth is depth. Offensive line depth is like pitching, you can never have too much.

We’re on to the twenty-ninth pick of the second round, No. 61 overall in the 2013 Niners Nation NFL mock draft. The San Francisco 49ers are back on the clock with their final pick. GM Tre9er is back for this final pick, and he gets to select a guy he has been high on for some time. With the sixty-first pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the 49ers select Bacarri Rambo, S, Georgia.

Explanation: The versatility of Cyprien and Rambo means the 49ers can play all sorts of coverages, knowing they have two of the most versatile safeties, both rangy in the back half and willing to come make plays in the run game. This is the best possible outcome for a team that needs impact players at the Safety position and we couldn’t be happier about getting TWO great players for the future of the secondary.

Trevor Woods: While Tre’s plan will give the 49ers depth for the future at safety, I am not sure getting another safety here is the way to go. The 49ers still have needs at other positions to address. Other needs include tight end — (Travis KelceVance McDonaldGavin Escobar are options at pick No. 61), and defensive lineman, receiver, cornerback, and possibly center. The 49ers have a lot of picks but they need to make sure that they make quality picks and draft the players they want. Rambo is a good pick and he could even be part of a platoon at safety with Cyprien. If two rookie safeties are added like Tre is proposing, competition would ensue, making both players better. I don’t think the 49ers will be drafting two safeties with their first three picks, but if they do, you heard it first from Tre.

A Behind-the-Scenes Introduction to the New “Life Code”

Even though this is the first page you are reading, I will confess to you that it is the last thing I am writing as I put this book together. I really couldn’t have done this introduction justice until the book was finished, because the writing of it has affected me in a meaningful way. To be candid, I usually feel tired and beat up after writing a book, but I don’t now. I feel energized and razor sharp about the subject matter. To say that I’m proud of this book would be an understatement. It has been written from a place of passion, determination, and concern. Given my profession and what I have dealt with every day for 35 years, I can unequivocally say I have seen the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of life. It’s in that “seeing” that I have gained what has, at times, been a painful wisdom that I seek to share in the following pages.

In this book, I intend to help you understand how the world really works and who you really are as you go about dealing with this real world. I don’t even want you to change who you are so much as I want to add to who you are—unless, of course, you are one of the people I am describing in Chapters 1, 2, and 3! I say that because in the first three chapters, you’re going to read about the people in your life who would just as soon cheat, exploit, and betray you as they would look at you. When you are done with that part of the book, those people will never be able to sneak up and “blindside” you ever again. Then, we shift gears in a big way, and you’re going to read about yourself and get an insider’s knowledge-based “Life Code” playbook on how to power up and win, and I mean win big, in your life, regardless of your encounters along the way with any of the “jerks” from the first part.

I want to share every part of the process with you because there’s a lot of value in how I developed these “New Rules.” When I decided to write about those people in this world who you wish would have never darkened your doorway, I started with my own personal life and experiences. I sat down at my desk at home on a Sunday afternoon and made a list of the people throughout the span of my life who, in my opinion, have sought to hurt me, betray me, and take advantage of me and those I love. Unfortunately, I had a pretty substantial list that spanned all the way from my childhood until this past Christmas! I was so consumed with the process that I forgot to eat, and for me, that is a serious omission!

Here is how I actually went about getting focused. I created a sheet on every single one of these jerks. (Some took several sheets to really capture the “essence” of who they were and what they had done or tried to do! I’m sure some of yours will too.) At the top, I described the scenario wherein they tried to jerk me around. Then, I did kind of an “autopsy” on what had happened in pretty good detail. I identified and listed what they had said and done when they had me in their sights. Hindsight truly is 20/20, so it was not hard to see. As I said, I had a whole set of lists, and I actually put them up on the office wall so I could pace back and forth as I looked for, studied, and added to commonalities. I even color-coded certain things with my little granddaughter Avery’s highlighters so I could see whether certain tactics, certain underhanded dealings, recurred from situation to situation.

Boy, oh boy, was I shocked! The similarities between people who had sought to exploit me in different ways, at different times in my life, were huge. I mean, it was incredible how consistent some of these behaviors and patterns were when compared side-by-side. Remember, I’m talking about people who, in most cases, didn’t even know each other. It wasn’t as if they had gotten together and attended the same “how to screw people over” class. But somehow or another, they all seem to have similar traits, characteristics, and tactics. This may seem intuitively obvious, but trust me—it wasn’t, at least not at first. I didn’t just list generalities, like they lied through their teeth. I deconstructed their ploys and tied early behaviors (such as “grooming”) to later acts, and so on. I also looked at who they were, not just what they did.

As I peeled back the layers, I discovered that what these types of people do can be identified and described in a definable, observable fashion and put on a finite list. I could not believe, when I looked at what they had in common, how amazingly similar these jerks are in the ways that they use and abuse people. It jumped out at me like a neon sign, blinking in my face. I stood there thinking, “Are you kidding me? How could I be in this profession this long, get this old, and not have figured out and articulated this before now?” I was livid with myself.

Next, I started scrubbing the literature. I wanted to know whether anybody else had ever tried to figure this out and put it all together in one place. I went to bookstores, Amazon.com, the psychological/psychiatric literature, and the sociological literature. I scrubbed the current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) that lists all the different mental illnesses and syndromes along with detailed traits and characteristics. It is great for what it is, but it distinguishes differences rather than commonalities. In short, I came up with zip. Zero.

Maybe authors and researchers were thinking that such an endeavor was too negative, unwieldy, or just indescribable. But come on! We have a world infected with a fungus of certain human beings whose primary purpose in life is to get up every day and take advantage of others, and who these people are, and how they do what they do, is knowable. It’s knowable! And if it’s knowable, then it should be avoidable. We can at least take away the element of surprise.

So, later in this book, I’m going to tell you about what I call the “Evil Eight”—the eight identifying characteristics that are dead giveaways when you see these people coming down the pike. If you’re like me, when I first saw this information put together in plain language, all in one place, you may hit yourself in the forehead with the heel of your hand and say, “It’s so obvious now! Man, oh man, if I had known then what I know now, some things in my life would have been a whole lot different.” Well, you’re about to know, and things are going to be different.

But, I didn’t stop there. I did exactly the same process with regard to the good guys. I was on a roll now! I listed those people in my life whom I admire and look up to and have enough intimate knowledge about to really know how they do what they do. These are people whom I have seen succeed, overcome, conquer, and contribute to this world. At the risk of sounding egotistical, I even included myself on that list, because I am proud of my family and my career and my spiritual life. I’ve been happily married almost 40 years with two great and thriving sons, so I figured, hey, take a look back! At the top of the sheet, I wrote down why I was including a particular person. Their successes spanned business, family and spiritual leadership, and athletics. I included successful people from all walks of life, males and females, young and old, rich and poor; but every single one of them was, at least in my view, a winner in some significant way.

Then, I started making the list of their traits, characteristics, and behaviors just as before. What is it that this person does that has contributed to their success? Education? Intelligence? Commitment? Passion? Social skills? Risk-taking? Analytical skills? Was it their strategy of problem solving or maybe their negotiating skills, philosophy, or coping skills? I put these up on a different wall in the same room. (I was driving Robin crazy!) Again, I started going through and color-coding to see whether there were similarities or whether these were a bunch of unique people who shared little or nothing with others who were also successful. Again, I was shocked! Even though these people came from different walks of life and might never have even heard of each other, the commonalities were incredible. There were differences, certainly, but more importantly, the core list of traits and characteristics, strategies, and styles shared by all of these people was overwhelmingly clear. Success doesn’t happen by accident; people don’t just get “lucky.” Success is created, and, just as importantly, once obtained, it must be managed and protected. I didn’t see a single success story in which the person at the center, the hero, the victor, didn’t come under some attack at some point. You’ve heard the saying “It’s lonely at the top,” and it’s true.

To say I was excited is a huge understatement. All of these people’s formula for success, just as with the bad guys mentioned earlier, was knowable. It was definable and observable and could be put on a finite list. And, believe me when I tell you, this was not a commonsense list. This was not a list that you would easily come up with if you sat down to speculate about what was at the core of their successes. But the good news is, even if not commonsensically obvious, success leaves footprints. You can track success and figure out what is at its core. So, I did the same thing that I did with the other list. I went to the bookstore, I scrubbed Amazon.com, and I got into the psychological, psychiatric, and sociological literature to see whether anyone had done what I was doing. I found a lot of “rah-rah” motivational-type books, tapes, and programs (some pretty good ones, actually, as far as they went), but I did not find one example of anybody talking about how to win in the real world and how to protect that success once you have it.

A judge says a key witness against the man convicted of murdering Washington intern Chandra Levy in 2001 could be discredited by new information.

Judge Gerald Fisher was speaking Thursday at the end of a hearing in the case, one of several recent hearings largely conducted out of earshot of the public and press. That pattern continued as government lawyers and lawyers for Ingmar Guandique spent about an hour and a half in private conversation.

Fisher says prosecutors provided him information in November that could be used to discredit the testimony former Guandique cellmate Armando Morales. Morales testified that Guandique confided he was responsible for Levy’s death.

The disappearance of the 24-year-old became international news after she was romantically linked with then-California Rep. Gary Condit.

George_Noory__Portrait__Updated_JPEG

Sad enough fame brings also jealousy and some of my [David Icke] enemies are very active and literally harassed him and his producer Tom with emails requesting more of my appearances on his show. This fiasco of lies brought some misunderstanding and conflicts when one day George assured me personally that the rumors of him never having me on his show again were false and he proved it to me by inviting me on his show March 11, 2009. This show was dedicated to the Law Enforcement Agency and how the 2009 series of Plutonic Windows will drastically affect negatively the police force and produce all sorts of dramatic news.Check the dates from CTC website www.coasttocoastam.com/show/2009/04/06

I apologized to him personally, to Tom then publicly to my readers for any damage I was foolish enough to create and learned the hard lesson to NEVER ever assume anything.

Born in 1950 George was born in the Chinese year of the Tiger and his Native American Zodiac sign is the Elk. Both signs are very strong but also very sensitive and lead the soul to supreme action including a reasonable disciplined life. Looking for kindness, being an emotional partner George is also attracting unusual lovers. Like all wild animals there is mistrusts to most people and as a true Gemini, George can be never sure of its decisions because he is very conscientious of the impact he produces on others.

RULER OF CHART: Sun Fame.

Sun 13Gem26 (1) – Self/Soul’s Purpose – George is set by the Cosmic Code to fulfill his mission as a Messenger of the Gods, by this he must be approached by all and with the help of his intuition, wit and intelligence debate the pro and con of all the topics thrown at him. He must remain *as a true Gemini and to the eyes of the world, right in the middle while adding spice and interest to the show. At the age of 28 the *Cosmic Code lead George to become the youngest news director in the country while at KSTP channel 5 in St. Paul MN. George is a very valuable Universal “Light Bringer” and proficient Teacher in his own right opening the door to all his guests to pass on a multitude of important messages to the world. Thank you George.

Moon 09Aqu19 (9) – Emotions/feeding – The moon represents the *feeding process and emotions. Aquarius is a highly intellectual advanced sign and George must *feed the world with a myriad of topics involving the New Age *UFO in the preparation of the year 2012 where humankind will become more perceptive to the teachings of the Cosmic Code and the introduction of our Space Brothers. The 9th house deal with Jupiter, the biggest planet in our solar system offering him with the real potential to reach and teach the mass with all his wonderful guests from all walks of life.

Mercury 20Tau57 (12) – Subconscious – His ruling planet Mercury is located in his subconscious making him prone to apply his phenomenal intuition and while anticipating the answer he is well able to ask the pertinent questions that need solid answers. Secret financial deals are also taking place behind the scenery as Taurus rules finances.

Venus 03Tau30 (12) – Subconscious dignity – Venus the goddess of love is very happy operating secretively but prone to financial deception in his subconscious house. George is running away from his own dramatic upbringing and his drive for giving and deceiving love rules his head. Many children on this world will benefit drastically from his efforts to bring relief to them.

Mars 27Vir31 (4) – Home/ family – Mars rules danger and war and in the home and family area it could bring havoc or danger while working even fire. On a more positive side regeneration takes place while writing, editing, exercising or working the garden.

Jupiter 06Pis40 (10) – Career/public standing – dignity – Once more the great Jupiter and its wonderful gift offers international growth and fame to George. While Jupiter rules education, philosophy Pisces rules the art, photography and religion. Note that Pisces rules the ocean and the Cosmic Code lead George *subconsciously to serve nine years in the US States Naval Reserve as a full Lieutenant. Jupiter will always open a *magical door to George if he simply asks.

Saturn 12Vir57 (4) – Home/family – George has some serious expectations as to what organizing, hygiene, cleaning, domesticity and hard work is all about. Either his Mother or the Father strict nature ingrained this quality in his make up. However there is always a subconscious fear to never do a good job or a lurking feeling of incompleteness regardless of George’s immense talent. This critical nature could bring digestive or heart troubles if he does not take enough time off from his career and responsibility.

Uranus 03Can50 (2) – Money/self esteem – Once I told George he would be involved in television and a year later he invited me on his Sci – Fi TV show completing yet another successful of my many predictions. Uranus rules television, UFO, astrology and all New Age matters thus George has much in store with television for him. Money will be made and spent in those endeavor and because George becomes a Cancer in this house it is crucial for him to understand and use the Moon’s fluctuations before sign any contract. I emailed him an Ebook copy of my 2009 Moon Power with this file and I can only hope for him to use it cautiously.

Neptune 14Lib42 (5) – Love/romance – On a negative note, Neptune rules religions, deception, gurus and the poisoning of the body and mind while Libra rules love, marriage, contracts and general partnerships. Being on the spotlight of fame George is in constant demand and weak or deceiving partners that do not have his natal turbocharged power will have to be left behind. This is also the house of children where difficult decisions will impact his children bringing sadness or guilt feelings. As a rule Gemini like Aquarius produces twins, two or four or eight children. Incidentally the *Octoplet Mom Miss Whiney was born with the same dual Gemini Dragon than George and you wonder why she has so many kids? Again O.J. Simpson also inherited such a dualistic dragon and O.J. was once involved in the broadcasting industry. He also had two, four, six or more Police cars after him on one of LA highway, then he hired two, four, six attorneys to save his butt and Two judgment came to pass to acquit him. While two people were murdered, he has also two or four kids? And he keeps going in and out of jail with MORE judgments again him Etc. Get the point? I wrote a newsletter about the “Octopulet Mom” and O.J. Simpson and explained her UCI, look for it at www.drturi.com/newsletter/

Pluto 16Leo05 (3) Communication exalted – Pluto rules extreme perception, supreme power and a relentless source of energy affecting George’s house of general communication. This celestial signature propels the subject to subconsciously *hypnotize others and often lead to political interest and endeavor. A magnetic voice is often the result predisposed to operate either in secret or at night as Pluto rules the underworld and darkness. Incidentally Hitler had the same celestial mark and was able to hypnotize the wise German population with his passionate powerful political speech. The subject is karmically *signed up to reach the mass and introduce significant changes into the lives of others. Pluto rules the night; Leo rules France, Italy, the day, children, love, fame and romance making all these affairs either very dramatic or exceedingly positive. In some cases, the soul must rebirth himself by enduring a series of painful heartaches.

Ascendant 22Leo41 (3) Personality – George in so many ways presents himself to the world as a *King in his own broadcasting field where the Cosmic Code allows him to build a world wide audience and enjoy fame. Pluto is on his ascendant and because Pluto rules the night George’s kingdom or Coast-To-Coast, all AM stations power up during Hades’ nightly hours allowing his magnetic voice to perform a miraculous work.

Plutonic man, Plutonic Voice

Realize also that like George, Arthur W. “Art” Bell, III (born June 17, 1945) inherited Pluto in his 3rd house of general communication too. The legacy of the Cosmic Code jurisdiction from Art to George is far from being an accident but more of a fated *cloning unread by the common person destitute of Cosmic Consciousness. The show must go on…

Midheaven 14Tau25 (12) Career – The Midheaven represents a supplement of energy directed to the public standing of the subject and in George’s case it resides in the wealthy, solid Taurus sign.

Dragon’s Head 03Ari55 (11) Luck/Growth/protection – Like me (Jay Leno / Stevie Wonder and Steven Seagal to name a few) George inherited a powerful Dragon’s Head (progress) in Aries (the chief). This nodal gift make us “warriors” and born leaders of the mind where the Cosmic Code jurisdiction will always open new doors if we only dare. Aries is ruled by Mars *the red planet of war and leads the subject towards the Army, Navy or any endeavor where challenge, leadership, courage facing danger and the use of the mind is used. George’s lucky Dragon resides in his 11th house of wishes and friends where he can count on some of them to propel him further right to the top. Really only the sky is the limit with such a red Dragon.

Dragon’s Tail 03Lib55 (5) Karma/stress/challenges – Libra rules partnerships, marriage, contract and the enforcement of both men and God’s rules. George Noory is currently divorced and has said on-air that he has been married twice. (He once referred to the odd-hours and stress of working as a late-night talk show host as one of the reasons for his failed marriages.) Memo – “Being on the spotlight George is in constant demand and weak or deceiving partners that do not have his natal turbocharged power will have to be left behind.” A powerful man indeed needs an even more powerful woman while total dedication, beauty, honesty, spirituality and real love *and nothing less is expected from the Tiger. Sad enough living with a turbo charged Aries/Tiger like George or I demand tremendous patience and a will of steel for any woman to deal with us.

March 31, 2013             10:17 p.m.

From the opening tip of the season, there was only one question in women’s college basketball: How do you stop Brittney Griner?

Louisville found the answer Sunday night, pulling off one of the biggest upsets in the history of the tournament.

Shoni Schimmel scored 22 points and Monique Reid hit two free throws with 2.6 seconds left to lift the fifth-seeded Cardinals over the defending national champions, 82-81, ending Griner’s incredible career.

The Cardinals made 16 three-pointers, matching the NCAA record, to pull off the victory at Oklahoma City.

“I’m just sad,” Griner said. “I didn’t do what I needed to do to get my team to the Elite Eight and just disappointment in myself.”

No. 1-seeded Baylor (34-2) had won 32 straight games and 74 of 75 behind Griner, the second-highest scoring player in NCAA history. She also holds the career records for blocks and dunks. But the 6-foot-8 star didn’t make a basket until the second half, then committed a foul with 2.6 seconds left that gave Louisville a chance to win.

Reid made those two foul shots, rescuing the Cardinals (27-8) after they squandered a 17-point lead in the last 71/2 minutes.

Hours earlier, the men’s team from Louisville beat Duke, 85-63, to reach the Final Four.

Reid and the Cardinals will play Tennessee in the Oklahoma City Regional final Tuesday for a berth in the Final Four.

Odyssey Sims scored 29 points, including two free throws with 9.1 seconds to go that put Baylor ahead 81-80.

March 21, 2013

The sleek man at the door bears no resemblance to the chubby pink-haired troublemaker whose snarky website made him as famous as the celebrities he loved to torment with nicknames like Sluttyienna (Sienna Miller), Potato Head (Rumer Willis) or Maniston (Jennifer Aniston).

Gone are the schlubby T-shirts and hoodies. A body-skimming gray sweater now conceals rock-hard abs. Gone, too, is the outlandish hair color, replaced by a slightly thinning curly brown mop. His Park LaBrea condo and its Pepto-Bismol-hued room are history. Home these days is a $2-million, five-bedroom Mediterranean retreat, dark and designerly, on the Westside.

But most striking is the way he’s cradling a 2-week-old baby, a preemie who was born to a secret surrogate four weeks early. During a two-hour interview that involves a long bottle feeding and plenty of new dad tears, he never lets his fragile son out of his arms.

Perez Hilton, is that really you?

“I don’t have to give people nasty nicknames anymore,” the 34-year-old blogger said. “I don’t have to say people are stupid, or people are fat, or people are ugly. I don’t need to draw inappropriate things on photos or out people. I can still be sassy and fun and do my job.”

There is a new calmness about Hilton, who was for years at the center of a self-created hurricane. Among the lawsuits, the online spats and the occasional punch in the face, Rolling Stone once said he had more beefs than the entire rap community combined.

His atrium-like entry offers a clue to his evolution. His last home was dominated by Hilton portraits sent by admirers. Here, a visitor is greeted by large white busts of Buddha, Jesus and Mary, Ganesh and Shiva floating against a dark wall with palm tree silhouettes.

“I wanted this to be my sacred space,” said the single gay dad, who asked his designers for “spiritual-meets-Miami.” Raised Catholic, he will forgo a traditional christening and instead host a blessing ceremony for the baby: “I’ll have everybody write down little positive thoughts and intentions and well wishes and keep them all in a box of good energy in his room.”

Cue the eye-roll emoticon from targets of the ambitious, Miami-born Mario Armando Lavandeira Jr., who became the blogger Hollywood loved to hate.

He says he started hating himself too: “I ended up becoming someone I didn’t want to be.”

And yet, at the thought of changing a formula that had brought unimagined financial rewards, he felt “almost paralyzed by fear.”

Would his readers, who loved and loathed his mean-spirited takedowns of high-flying celebrities, turn away? “I’d been doing things a certain way for six years, and if all of a sudden I do a 180 on people, will they stop reading my website?” Hilton wondered.

Readership dipped briefly, but to his surprise, the change did not tarnish his brand. Young, college-educated women, his most avid fans, have continued to flock to him. More than 6.3 million people follow him on Twitter.

I don’t need to be liked, but I need to not be considered the downfall of civilization.”— Perez Hilton

His original site, which remains his bread and butter, is one of the most visited on the Internet. His media empire also includes mostly snark-free websites devoted to pets (TeddyHilton), children (Perezitos), fashion (CocoPerez) and fitness (FitPerez).

“When you factor in tablet and mobile, he’s nicely above where he was when he made his karma change,” said Henry Copeland of BlogAds, a company that handles Hilton’s advertising.

Where once he worked at a back table in a Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf on Sunset Boulevard (for the free Wi-Fi), he now has an office and staff. He’s co-written books, including a children’s story about a boy with pink hair whose travails are redeemed by parental love. He appears every day on Carson Daly’s radio show, and has his own syndicated radio show, “Perez Nights Live.”

The cultural critic Lee Siegel, whose 2008 book, “Against the Machine,” explored the social implications of the crudeness unleashed by the Internet, said Hilton’s softening tone is in step with the times.

“Everyone is living in such economic terror,” he said, “they have to be nice.”

In any case, he added, the celebrity-industrial complex can’t exist without a Perez Hilton. “Hollywood has always had this Hedda Hopper-type creature,” Siegel said, invoking the once-feared columnist. “Because of the dynamic of the place, celebrity culture wouldn’t exist but for its routine deflations. You’ve got to allow yourself to be deflated or the public won’t continue to accept you.”

For a professional chatterbox, Hilton has been remarkably secretive about the most important development in his life. Though he’s never hidden his desire to have children, only his mother, sister, lawyer and business manager knew that he’d found an egg donor and a surrogate last year to carry his biological child. He doesn’t know the name of the egg donor, and he won’t divulge the name or location of the surrogate.

The pregnancy had gone smoothly for eight months. But on Feb. 16, as he was walking into Staples Center with a friend to see Pink in concert, he got a panicked call from the surrogate and her husband. Her water had broken; labor would be induced. The baby wasn’t due until March 16.

He took a flight out the next morning, with his sister and mother, then arrived breathlessly at the wrong hospital. The town had two hospitals with similar names. He was certain he would miss the birth, but three hours after he arrived at the right place, Mario Armando Lavandeira III entered the world at a healthy 5 pounds, 9 ounces. “He waited for Daddy,” Hilton said.

A week later, Hilton announced the news on his website. To his surprise, he became the No. 1 trending topic on Twitter: “Maybe people care about me a little?” he said, his voice rising and growing small as he pronounced “little.”

Apparently so. He is no longer the Perez Hilton who drew the wrath of many gays by outing closeted celebrities, and infuriated paparazzi agencies by helping himself to their photos. He is not the same guy who insulted Miss USA runner-up Carrie Prejean, or spat an anti-gay slur at Will.i.am.

“I feel like it spiraled out of control,” Hilton said of the online persona. “It got progressively meaner and bitchier.”

In 2010, he decided to “aspire higher.” The shift occurred after he made an “It Gets Better” video, to help prevent gay teen suicide, and discovered, to his horror, that he was considered one of the biggest bullies on the Internet. Khloe Kardashian, a frequent Hilton target, called him out as her “personal bully” for scrawling words like “tranny” and “fugly” on her photos. And that was one of the nicer responses.

So he tried to be positive, like his idol Oprah Winfrey, but he felt as if he’d lost his edge.

Eventually, he settled on a new role model: Rosie O’Donnell. “She’s a polarizing person, but when people think of her, they don’t think she’s a bad person or she’s mean,” Hilton said. “I don’t need to be liked, but I need to not be considered the downfall of civilization.”

Certain celebrities still bring out the claws, though. Chief among them: Singers Chris Brown, whose violent history is catnip for gossips, and Justin Bieber, who seems to be in the throes of a Britney Spears-style paparazzi-driven meltdown. “Justin,” Hilton said recently on one of the many videos he posts, “get your act together, or you may be shaving your head real soon!”

A passionate music fan whose lavish attention helped put singers Adele, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry on the map, Hilton’s biggest flop has been the music deal he signed with Warner Bros. Records for his own label in 2009. This year, he decided to step back from the music business and put all his energy into his websites and something he’s been trying to do for years: television.

He and his TV producing partner, Steven Grossman of the Collective, are in the midst of pitching a talk show. Grossman said Hilton’s evolving persona has “made him more commercial, and less of a risk and less of a loose cannon.”

Hilton, who had one serious relationship in the last five years, always knew he would have a child by his 35th birthday, which is Saturday. And he has always been prepared to go it alone: “I knew it was going to happen this way because boyfriends and husbands may come and go, but kids are forever. I didn’t want to keep waiting.”

A changing table has been installed in his Pilates room, and the dramatic living room, dominated by a life-size black horse lamp from the designer Moooi, is cluttered with baby-phernalia. To cope with his new baby nerves, he shops online late at night, buying Spanish-language children’s books to read to his son, on advice of the pediatrician.

“The other day I locked myself in the bathroom and started crying because in addition to my brain feeling loopy, I really have felt super hormonal and emotional,” Hilton said, as Mario slept on a nursing pillow in his lap. “Wow, I really am a dad now and it’s awesome.”

Louisville, Kansas, Indiana andGonzaga were awarded the top seeds in the NCAA collegebasketball tournament on Sunday as the 68-team field for the path to the Final Four in Atlanta was set.

Louisville (29-5) took the overall number one seed with its strong finish. The Cardinals defeated Syracuse on Saturday for the Big East tournament championship and closed the season with 10 straight wins.

Louisville opens play in the Midwest Region on Thursday in Lexington, Kentucky, against the winner of the First Four catch-up between North Carolina A&T and Liberty.

Kansas, the number one seed in the South Region and the number two overall seed, will open with Sun Belt champion Western Kentucky on Friday in Kansas City, Missouri.

The Jayhawks are making their 24th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, the longest active streak. The record run, 27 years, was set by North Carolina from 1975-2001.

Indiana is the number one seed in the East Region. The Hoosiers will open against LIU Brooklyn or James Madison on Friday in Dayton, Ohio.

Indiana was expected to have a good chance at the number one overall seed and the top seed in the Midwest Region, a slot that would have sent the Hoosiers through nearby Indianapolis for the regional semi-finals and finals. Instead, Indiana closed the season by losing three of its final six games, including a defeat to Wisconsin in the Big Ten tournament semi-finals.

Gonzaga earned the top seed in the West Region. The West Coast Conference regular-season and tournament champion will play Southern University on Thursday in Salt Lake City.

Gonzaga got the final No. 1 seed, ahead of Miami.

The Hurricanes defeated North Carolina on Sunday for the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament title.

“Miami had a tremendous year. In the final analysis, we put Gonzaga just ahead of them,” said NCAA Tournament committee chair Mike Bobinski, Georgia Tech’s athletic director.

Duke, also considered a contender for a number one seed, was awarded the number two seed in the Midwest. The Blue Devils will play Albany on Friday in Philadelphia.

The Big East Conference had the most teams reach the field with eight, while the Big Ten had seven.

Defending national champion Kentucky failed to get into the field.

March 17, 2013

Standing in the center circle for the opening tipoff of the last tournament of the old Big East, Louisville’s Gorgui Dieng knew the moment was weighty, but he may not have recognized just how much so.

Not until he sat at his locker after the game, with a shiny black box containing a shiny tournament championship ring in his lap, did he allow a moment of reflection.

“I’m never going to forget that,” Dieng said of the tipoff. “It’s a great memory. I had a lot of fun.”

It seems somehow fitting that the first player to touch the ball Saturday was Dieng, the 6-foot-11 center from Senegal, who had never watched a Big East tournament game until he played in one, as a freshman in 2011.

He had no idea what the tournament format meant then or how it unfolded. But in three seasons, as the starting center on two title-winning teams, Dieng has made himself an indelible part of the tournament’s history.

He was the centerpiece of Louisville’s defense Saturday, when their second-half turnaround led to a 78-61 victory against Syracuse, ending the game on a 44-10 run. The Cardinals went into halftime trailing, 35-22, but with an understanding of the defensive adjustment they needed to make.

Syracuse had made 6 of 12 3-pointers, including two each by James Southerland and C. J. Fair. That could not happen again.

The Cardinals made certain it did not with their two guards, Peyton Siva and Russ Smith, defending the ball around the perimeter incessantly, not allowing the Orange’s outside shooters any breathing room to even consider pulling the trigger. They could afford to gamble and extend because of Dieng, the conference’s defensive player of the year, who was an intimidating force in the middle.

“We dog the basketball and make a frenzy,” Smith said. “When you have a presence like that in the paint, it makes things a lot easier.”

Dieng did many of the little things for Louisville — hustling after loose balls, passing in the middle of Syracuse’s zone, screening for the ball-carriers and bringing down tough rebounds when needed. He finished with 9 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists, 2 steals and a block,

“Gorgui was the facilitator,” Louisville Coach Rick Pitino said, referring to his role in the offense. For most of the game, Dieng was positioned at about the free-throw line in the center of Syracuse’s 2-3 zone, and his size created sight lines he could use to find the open man.

Often it was Montrezl Harrell, who scored 20 points. Dieng’s wraparound pass to Harrell for a dunk with 2 minutes 32 seconds left was one of the game’s many highlights.

“You need length to play against Syracuse,” Pitino said, nodding at Harrell. “That’s where this young man came in. You’ve got Gorgui and him.”

The Cardinals were second in the nation in steals a game this season with 10.8, but they did not seem to dial up the defensive intensity until the second half Saturday. Syracuse went into halftime having turned the ball over only seven times; by the end of the game, their total was 20.

“They’re the best pressing team that we’ve seen all year,” Syracuse Coach Jim Boeheim said.

Dieng’s improvement over the last year might be the biggest difference for Louisville, which went to the Final Four a season ago with largely the same lineup it trotted out Saturday. Dieng, though, has made significant strides.

He was named the Big East’s defensive player of the year after averaging 9.9 rebounds, 2.6 blocks and 1.3 steals a game. He also shot 51 percent from the field and averaged a career-high 10.1 points.

Pitino screams his name constantly (Pitino pronounces it “Gaw-gee!” in his New York accent), positioning the lanky center in Louisville’s complex offensive sets like an oversized chess piece.

“Sometimes he gets me confused,” Dieng said, smiling. “But I listen to him. I know he puts me in the right spot.”

He knows now what the Big East tournament means, now that he has been at the top of the ladder twice, as the unassuming man in the middle who has learned a lot in three short years.

“No one’s going to mention basketball now in the Big East without mentioning us,” Dieng said. “That’s a good thing.”

Bachelorette Revealed After Bachelor Finale: Desiree Hartsock Is the One!

March 11, 2013              11:45pm

Desiree Hartsock, who was sent home on season 17 of “The Bachelor,” is the new star of “The Bachelorette,” show host Chris Harrison announced Monday night.

Harrison made the announcement during “The Bachelor: After the Final Rose,” following the finale of “The Bachelor” in which Sean Lowe proposed to Catherine Giudici.

Giudici accepted the proposal, and the pair said they’ll marry soon. The wedding will be aired this summer on ABC, Harrison, who hosts “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette,” said.

Hartsock, a bridal stylist from Northglenn, Colo., was eliminated in the eighth week of “The Bachelor.” She was among 26 women vying to win Lowe’s heart, and made it to the final four women in the running, but she was sent packing after Lowe’s meeting with her family went wrong.

Hartsock’s brother accused Lowe of being a playboy and of not returning his sister’s feelings. Lowe denied the accusation.

Hartsock, who had been a fan favorite, told Harrison that she was grateful for the opportunity to find love, and believed in the process of finding it on the show.

Twenty-five men will compete for her hand when the new season of “The Bachelorette” debuts May 20.

“I know that it can happen and one of them will be hopefully my true love, as cliché as it sounds,” she said.

8a.m. EDT            March 10, 2013

It’s NASCAR race day at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and we’ve got some essential information you need to get ready for today’s Kobalt Tools 400.

START TIME: A Lowe’s executive will instruct drivers to start their engines at 3:08 Eastern time today (12:08 local), followed by the green flag at 3:16 p.m. So if you want to skip the pre-race show and just tune in for the race, turn on your TV at 3:16.

RACE DISTANCE: The Kobalt Tools 400 is a 400.5-mile race around the 1.5-mile Las Vegas Motor Speedway. That means drivers will need to go 267 laps to complete the full distance.

NATIONAL ANTHEM: Marie Osmond — yes, of the Osmonds — will do the honors today. She is currently starring in a 90-minute Vegas show with her brother, Donny.

TV/RADIO SCHEDULE: FOX will broadcast today’s race and has a pre-race show beginning at 2:30 p.m. ET. The Performance Racing Network (PRN) will call the race on the radio.

WEATHER: Mild and pleasant. The National Weather Service is predicting a sunny desert day with a high of 69 degrees. Rain is not in the forecast.

LAST TIME: Tony Stewart followed up his 2011 championship by scoring a win at Las Vegas just three races into the 2012 season — his first-ever win at the track.

STARTING LINEUP: Since Las Vegas was hit with day-long rain on Friday, qualifying was rained out and the field was set according to the rulebook; in this case, that was last year’s owner points. Brad Keselowski was awarded the pole, and he’ll start alongside Clint Bowyer.

MARCH 7, 2013 AT 3:30 PM

The Lions have started their pre-draft visits with prospects, and, naturally, the first player they hosted was a receiver.

Former Tennessee wideout Justin Hunter visited the Lions on Thursday in Allen Park and was the first of the team’s 30 allotted pre-draft visitors, according to the team’s web site.

Lions general manager Martin Mayhew has said he loves receivers, and Hunter is widely considered one of the best in the upcoming draft class. ESPN’s Scouts Inc. ranks him as the 25th-best prospect in April’s draft and the No. 3 receiver behind West Virginia’s Tavon Austin and California’s Keenan Allen.

Hunter measured at 6 foot 4 and 196 pounds at the NFL Scouting Combine last month. His 11-foot, 4-inch broad jump was the best among receivers, he tied for first with a 39.5-inch vertical leap and his 4.44-second 40-yard dash was ninth at the position.

During Hunter’s junior season in 2012, he caught 73 passes for 1,083 yards and nine touchdowns.

With Titus Young released and Nate Burleson and Ryan Broyles recovering from injuries, the Lions will likely use the draft or free agency to add a receiver and help take pressure off Calvin Johnson.

February 22, 2013             5:54pm

Former Texas A&M running back Christine Michael didn’t receive a single carry in the team’s Cotton Bowl win against Oklahoma, and he still doesn’t know why.

The game was a blowout with the Aggies dominating the Sooners 41-13. Despite taking reps as a starter in practice all week, Michael didn’t get to touch the football. But Johnny Manziel approached Michael after the game, put his arm around him and told him the best was yet to come.

“It was a blur to me,” Michael said. “It was shocking to me, it’s still shocking to this day. He told me, ‘The world is going to see, someone’s going to see.'”

Michael’s senior season at Texas A&M was a struggle. The coaching and scheme changes at A&M led to to a significant decrease in Michael’s playing time and production. He said he didn’t handle the situation as well as he should have but has learned from the situation.

“Sometimes you just live in you learn,” he said. “A lot of things got shaky. I kind of went in my own tunnel and got real stubborn. I was just in my own world.”

With the lack of playing time and production, Michael’s draft stock took a hit during his senior season. Despite the frustrations of his senior season, Michael has no regrets about finishing his career with the Aggies.

“It’s all a blessing,” Michael said. “I don’t regret anything. Everything happens for a reason.”

Michael has had to overcome some significant injuries in his career, including a broken leg and a torn ACL. Add that to his lack of playing time as a senior, and the deck appears to be stacked against him. But Michael insists his work ethic is his strongest trait.

“Honestly, as a player that is constantly working hard, I train to be a first-round pick, Michael said. “You tell me the last time you’ve seen a running back who’s broke his leg and come back and torn his ACL another year and come back. My work ethic is incredible.”

“One day it will show,” Michael added. “They have great running backs in this class, but I’m looking to be the best.”

While other running backs were participating in the Senior Bowl, Michael had to settle for the East-West Shrine Game, where he had an impressive showing. More so than his strong performance, Michael was excited to move forward.

“Once I got to the All-Star Game, I felt a lot of pressure was off,” Michael said. “I felt free.”

At the combine, Michael knows he has as much to prove in the interview process as he does on the field. Though with the lack of senior year tape he has, he knows he has some on-the-field work to do as well.

“I definitely say interviews,” Michael said when asked where he has to show improvement. “I just want to re-prove myself on the field too.I haven’t had great interviews and I haven’t had much success on the field lately.”

March 4, 2013               10:09 a.m.

It’s a real-life scenario so bizarre and outlandish it seems like it was dreamed up by the writers of “South Park” or “30 Rock”: Retired NBA player turned C-list reality star Dennis Rodman travels toNorth Korea, becomes the first American known to publicly meet with dictator Kim Jong Un, then returns to the U.S. proclaiming his admiration for the leader on ABC’s “This Week.”

Rodman sat down for an interview with George Stephanopoulos on Sunday, a situation that would have been mind-bogglingly weird even if the  “All-Star Celebrity Apprentice” cast member hadn’t just returned from one of the world’s most isolated and oppressive countries.

Oh, but he had. Throughout his conversation, Rodman brimmed with praise for the young leader – voted Sexiest Man Alive by the satirical website the Onion last year – calling Kim a “great guy” and delivering a message to President Obama on his behalf:

“He wants Obama to do one thing: Call him. He said, ‘If you can, Dennis, I don’t want [to] do war. I don’t want to do war.’ He said that to me.”

Pressed repeatedly by Stephanopoulos about Kim’s dire record on human rights, Rodman reluctantly conceded that his friend “loves power” and “loves control” but portrayed Kim as a well-meaning but misguided young man desperate to emerge from the shadow of his late father, Kim Jong Il, who died in 2011.

“He’s not his dad. Not his grandpa. He’s 28 years old,” Rodman said, adding that even though he doesn’t condone Kim’s litany of abuses – which include the mass imprisonment of some 200,000 citizens in forced labor camps and widespread, government-induced food shortages – he’s not passing judgment. After all, didn’t Bill Clinton sleep with his “secretary”?

In addition to his ubiquitous sunglasses, Rodman wore a flashy blazer festooned with American currency, a curious wardrobe choice given his new ties to the world’s most brutal communist regime: Was Rodman reassuring us of his love for capitalism, making an ironic statement about Western greed, or had he simply left his other garish attire at the dry cleaner?

Rodman, who traveled to North Korea with members of the Harlem Globetrotters and a film crew for the upcoming HBO series “Vice,” instead chose to focus on the common ground he shares with the dictator and our own commander-in-chief.

“He loves basketball. And I said the same thing, I said, ‘Obama loves basketball.’ Let’s start there,” Rodman told Stephanopoulos.

Only a few weeks ago, the former Laker was generating headlines after an emotionally unhinged appearance on “The Tonight Show.” Now Rodman, who hasn’t been this close to a powerful tyrant since his brief fling with Madonna in the mid ’90s (hey-o!), finds himself in the unlikely position of having more first-hand knowledge of Kim than just about anyone in the American intelligence community.

As Col. Steve Ganyard, a former deputy assistant secretary of State, told ABC’s Martha Raddatz: “There is nobody at the CIA who can tell you more personally about Kim Jong Un than Dennis Rodman, and that in itself is scary.”

No kidding.

Each letter of the first name rules 9 years of life.  Ages 27 to 54 are ruled by the sum of the day of birth and the fourth, fifth, and sixth letters of the name.

May 13th, 1961              Dennis Rodman

13 (born on the 13th of the month) + 14 (n is the 14th letter of the alphabet) + 9 (i is the 9th letter of the alphabet) + 19 (s is the 19th letter of the alphabet) = 55

So the numbers 13 (born on the 13th of the month), 42 (sum of the fourth, fifth, and sixth letters of the name), and 55 (13+42=55) rule his ages twenty-seven to fifty-four

13 = Transformation.  Major changes.  Things change.

In the aftermath of Missouri’s 63-60 win over Florida on Tuesday, Florida coach Billy Donovan nearly fell all over himself complimenting MU junior point guard Phil Pressey.

“The guy I was really, really impressed with Pressey,” Donovan said. “I thought he really did a terrific job of running his team. He got the ball where it needed to go and made the game easy for everybody else. I thought he really played within himself.”

Pressey has been a lightning rod for criticism, thanks to his frantic, up-and-down play that has often vacillated between virtuoso and self-destructive. So when I heard Donovan’s comment, I simply couldn’t help it; I had to dive back into the film room and take another look at Pressey’s performance, just to see if this was really true or just typical lip service.

What I saw, I must admit, was impressive. For all Pressey’s faults — he was skewered for his late-game shot-selection/turnovers in road losses to LSUTexas A&M and Arkansas — he was excellent down the stretch against Florida.

Over the last 16 minutes of the game, Pressey had five points, seven assists and (most importantly) zero turnovers. I also charted him taking just one bad shot. His final line (seven points, 10 assists) included five turnovers, which are still entirely too many for a point guard — in SEC play, he’s averaging a league-leading 4.2 per game. But his performance as a whole was a 180-degree turn from his two-point, six-assist, 10-turnover effort in Missouri’s embarrassing 83-52 loss to the Gators on Jan. 19 in Gainesville.

“I thought he was, at our place, crazy,” Donovan said. “I know he turned it over five times (tonight), but a lot of that had to do with we gave him a lot of coverage on a lot of pick-and-roll action.”

Donovan noted that that coverage stopped being effective around the middle of the second half, when Missouri — which trailed 49-36 — outscored the Gators 27-11 the rest of the way. Much of this had to do with Pressey, who efficiently navigated pick-and-rolls and found open teammates in the second half.

“For the last 10 minutes our pick-and-roll coverage on Pressey was not great,” Donovan said. “It was really, really good for 30 minutes…(but) Pressey got loose on pick-and-rolls and made the game easy for everybody else around him.”

If the conventional wisdom is to lay low before major rivalry games and try not to make a stir, Michael Carter-Williams is now going way off script. The Syracuse star gave a decidedly non-vanilla quote when talking to Syracuse.com about the Orange’s rivalry with Georgetown.

“We’ve always been better than them, always will be better than them,” he said. “And we just want to go out on top.”

That’s juicy. It’s true that Syracuse leads the series with Georgetown, 46-38. On the other hand, Georgetown has more Big East tournament titles than Syracuse (seven to five). Both schools have one national title, but Georgetown has more appearances in the title game.

Carter-Williams, it’s worth noting, was spurred on to this declaration by a video clip Syracuse.com showed him featuring ex-Syracuse star Kris Joseph.

“This rivalry right here dates back before you and I and all of us were born,” he said, addressing Carter-Williams and teammate C.J. Fair. “So this means a whole lot. And this being the last game, I EXPECT, and I repeat, expect a win. Because first of all, Georgetown is not better than us. They never have been, and I don’t see them ever being better than us, and we don’t want to leave the Big East with them saying they beat us the last time. CAN’T let that happen. I don’t know how many times we play them, I think it’s two times, but we want to go 2-0 and close out that series and that rivalry and let them know that the Orange will always be better than the Hoyas. And that’s what we’ve got to do.”

“I mean, we want to leave the Big East with the bragging rights over Georgetown,” Fair later said. “So we’ve just got to take one game at a time. We play ‘em two times, so we’ve got to protect our home court and then finish it off in D.C.”

The Cleveland Browns continued to struggle in 2012, but a new coaching staff is hoping to breathe life into this often-breathless franchise. One of the most high-profile signings is new defensive coordinator Ray Horton, who was let go by the Arizona Cardinals after Ken Whisenhunt was fired as head coach. Horton helped turn the Cardinals into a top defensive unit and saw linebacker Daryl Washingtonrecord 108 solo tackles with nine sacks for Arizona, a phenomenal total for an inside linebacker.

Just think what he could do with another high-motor pass-rusher added to the Browns defense.

Cleveland is picking sixth overall in April’s draft, and there’s a few pass-rushers of varying interest available. Would the Browns be interested in taking LB/DE Damontre Moore out of Texas A&M? Josh Norris of Rotoworld sees it as a possibility in his latest mock draft:

With the Browns’ front seven likely in place outside of a strong side rush linebacker behind a three man front, expect the team to address that need at this selection. Moore has experience at both rush linebacker and defensive end, the latter being in a four man front. He offers a relentless motor, but I would like to see Moore use his length and hands more frequently while planting outside and working back in.

Jabaal Sheard led the Browns in sacks last season with just seven. Moore is considered one of the top three pass-rushers available in the draft right now, along with Bjoern Werner and Barkevious Mingo. The 6’4, 250-pound Aggie had 80 tackles, 12.5 sacks and 20 tackles for a loss in 2012. He would instantly upgrade the Browns defense and give Horton a player that could finally help turn around the franchise.

That would help after seeing the Ravens win their second Super Bowl since leaving Cleveland.

Justin Cobbs, man. For 39 minutes, Cobbs had one of his toughest days in a Cal uniform. Jonathan Loyd had dominated him on defense all night long. Of his eight turnovers, most of them were forced by Loyd’s quick hands. It was maddening. In a game when Cal otherwise should have controlled the offensively punchless Ducks, Cal’s turnovers prevented the Bear offense from kicking into gear.

So of course the game had to end with Justin Cobbs hitting a deep two over Loyd as he went for the strip.

Cal was lucky to be in the position to hold the ball for the win. The Ducks held a three point lead with two minutes to play, and after the Thurmanator tied it on a three point play, the Ducks three times had opportunities to take the lead. They had an easy chance to play two for one, but somehow took the entire 35 seconds to get a bad look off, thus allowing Cal to hold for the final shot. And Cobbs made them pay.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished eighth in the Sprint Unlimited on Saturday night but never really considered himself a contender. He believes that Kevin Harvick, Tony Stewart and Matt Kenseth were the class of the field and believes he was just a little bit off from contending for the win.

While some drivers complained about the lack of grip in the middle of a run, Earnhardt had no such concerns and says he just didn’t make the right moves in the closing laps.

“I could get runs and charge up into the top five,” Earnhardt said. “But it didn’t like the clean air up there. It got real draggy, just real slow up front. The no. 20 had a really great car and the no. 14 was fast but they are real sharp at plate racing.

“I just didn’t make enough of the right moves or have enough car to get it going there at the end.”

Earnhardt nearly lost a lap to the leaders at the end of the second segment and there was concern that he suffered an engine failure. His team, led by crew chief Steve Letarte, diagnosed the car during the intermission and found no problems. Earnhardt now believes that he just lost the draft.

“Well I thought I had an issue with the engine but it was just that the draft was easy to lose,” Earnhardt said. “With this spoiler on the back, it’s really easy to lose the draft because air gets to your nose pretty quick, and the distance of the draft isn’t as far back as it used to be off the car in front of you. So you can lose it pretty quickly. You have to be real careful.”

The Sprint Cup Series debuted a new car in the Sprint Unlimited and Earnhardt believes it will change the way drivers draft at plate races this season. Earnhardt says the new car, combined with very little draft practice, was the cause of the multicar accident on lap 14 and that drivers have to adjust to the new style of drafting.

“A lot of the guys that weren’t in this race haven’t been in real race conditions with this car yet,” Earnhardt added. “So, half the field still has a lot to learn; a crash course you know…

“The bumpers aren’t perfect. They are imperfect when they line up, and that is going to cause some action and some drama out there. That is the way it used to be, and I think everybody is okay with that. The drafting and the way you work the draft, I think everybody is still kind of learning that. I learned a lot tonight, but I still think there is a ton to learn.”

Short-track fans at Daytona International Speedway and a national television audience were treated to a dramatic late-race duel between Kyle Larson and C.E. Falk in the NASCAR All-American Tour Late Model race on Monday night. Larson won the race but controversy raged to kick off the two-day Battle at the Beach short track event at the World Center of Racing.

Larson trailed Falk with six laps to go and appeared to make his move too soon, getting under Falk and passing him off the exit of turn two. Falk immediately ducked under Larson and retook the point, going into turns three and four. Larson closely trailed Falk until the last lap when, using the lap car of Trey Gibson as a pic, he got behind Falk and turned him before the start/finish line.

Larson crossed the line first and Falk scrambled to finish third, just behind the surging Ben Rhodes who led the most laps and beat Falk to the checkered flag. Falk had every right to be furious but was surprisingly calm following the race.

“Look, I’m not a 15-year-old kid anymore,” Falk said. “I’m 25 years old and I want to be in this sport for a long time. I can’t get there by acting like a spoiled brat. I had a moment to vent when I walked over to turn 1 and that was it. When you have the cameras on you like this, you need to be a professional. Kids were watching this race, especially on Speed on a Monday night, and they’re looking for someone to look up to.”

Ultimately, Falk believes there wasn’t much more he could have done. He wishes Larson hadn’t turned him but, on the last lap at a short track, Falk said that anything goes.

“I was staying on the brakes as long as I could,” Falk said. “I’ve been short track racing for a long time and on the last lap, when you’re two car-lengths ahead, you’re pretty much free game up front — you’re just a sitting duck… I just tried to protect the bottom best I could and tried to cut the corner and get around that tire barrier but he got into me once, thought I would be OK, and the wheels were just spinning.

“He got into me that last time and he turned me at the line. I wish he hadn’t done that but on the last lap, it’s anything goes.”

Larson admits that he was too aggressive at the end – dirty even – but did what he had to do to win the trophy, a replica of those handed to the winner of the Grand National races held on beach circuit in NASCAR’s youth.

“I don’t do a lot of short track racing,” Larson said. “But every video I’ve ever seen of it, the second-place driver wins in this scenario. I did what I think C.E. would have done to me if the positions were reversed.”

Both drivers had used up most of their brakes at the end of the race, with Larson saying he had to lean back into the seat just to put pressure on his brake pads. Decreased brakes forced the drivers to let off the throttle early to get a better entry and thus resulted in some of the contact between the two at the end.

“I hit the center of his bumper and got up underneath him and just turned him around,” Larson said. “I feel bad for him but we were coming to the finish line.”

Henrik Lundqvist Rangers

February 9, 2013

The New York Rangers will go as far Henrik Lundqvist can carry them.

That is why the Rangers’ 4-5-0 record after the first nine games was reflective of their franchise goaltender’s statistics. Entering the Blueshirts’ contest with the Islanders on February 7th, the reigning Vezina Trophy-winner had a 3-5-0 record with a 2.83 goals against average and a .900 save percentage.

Lundqvist certainly is not the sole reason why the Rangers stumbled out of the gate. The special teams have struggled, and as head coach John Tortorella said before the Rangers-Islanders game, there are a number of players who have not played up to par.

If there was one player who did not benefit from the abbreviated training camp — and no preseason games — it was Lundqvist.

“Every year, I never feel good during the preseason,” Lundqvist said. “It usually takes three or four games for me to find my rhythm and get comfortable.

“I don’t see it as an excuse. I just have to keep pushing myself to get to where I should be.”

The Rangers’ netminder has displayed flashes of dominance early in the season, such as a highlight reel save against the Bruins on opening night.

But it was the Rangers’ 4-1 victory over the Islanders where the reigning Vezina Trophy-winner played his most complete game of the season.

Not only did Lundqvist stop 27 out of 28 shots, but the saves he made were key in determining the outcome of the contest.

One sequence where Lundqvist stood tall came during an Islanders power play early in the first period. Lundqvist made three saves, including a stop on Matt Martin’s backhander from just outside the crease, to preserve the Blueshirts’ 1-0 lead.

A few minutes after the Rangers killed off the penalty, Marian Gaborik scored to extend the lead to two.

With two minutes left in the second period, with the Rangers clinging to a 2-1 lead, the Isles’ Michael Grabner had a breakaway while his team was shorthanded. Lundqvist made a right pad save to rob Grabner of what would have been his sixth goal of the season.

Before the power play expired, the Rangers scored to regain the two-goal advantage.

“The last four or five games, I’ve been doing the right things,” Lundqvist said after the Rangers’ win. “The difference between making the big save or not is really small so I have to stay confident and keep doing what I’m doing.

“If I do that, things will turn around.”

February 04, 2013              10:10PM

MICHAEL Clarke has sealed the most prolific batting year in Australian Test history with the 2013 Allan Border Medal.

Clarke joined Ricky Ponting as the award’s only four-time winner, polling 198 votes to finish well clear of his teammates despite playing little more than half of the ODIs and no Twenty20 internationals.

The retired Mike Hussey and injury-plagued Shane Watson tied for second on 165, highlighting the importance of Clarke to his young teammates in a massive year ahead.

The Australian skipper pounded 1080 runs in nine matches in the voting period between February 25, 2012, and January 28 this year at an average of 77.1 — the lion’s share of his national record 1595 runs in the calendar year of 2012.

Clarke said “a lot of luck and hard work” had gone into the result, harking back to his axing from the national team in 2005 as the turning point.

“It was a tough time when I got dropped from the Test team, but I think that’s probably the time in my life when I realised I had to work a lot harder than I was to stay in the Australian team,” he said.

Clarke, who won the 2005, 2009 (with Ponting) and 2012 medals, was the standout player throughout home series against South Africa and Sri Lanka and polled in two of the three matches in the West Indies to also be anointed Test player of the year on 22 votes ahead of Mike Hussey (15) and Matthew Wade (12).

But it was his back-to-back double-centuries — an unbeaten 259 at the Gabba followed by 230 at the Adelaide Oval — against the Proteas in November that made him bulletproof in voting with Test match performances outweighing the shorter games.

Michael Clarke

Clarke finished sixth in the one-day international voting on 22, just eight off the winner’s pace, despite playing in just 13 of 24 counting matches.

The 31-year-old, whose three centuries excluded the triple and double-centuries he scored against India in 2012 outside the voting period, also took six wickets including a stunning 5-86 in Dominica for his second career “five-for” haul.

To cap a great year, his century in the MCG Boxing Day Test gave him the full set of centuries at each major Australian Test venue, another dream fulfilled.

In other award categories, Clint McKay was rewarded for his consistency as Australia’s top one-day international player, while Shane Watson’s dominance of the T20 World Cup was enough to steer him to the 20-over gong for the second successive year.

Jessica Cameron edged fellow Victorian Meg Lanning to win her first Belinda Clark Award as our top female cricketer after the Southern Stars defended their World T20 crown.

Phil Hughes capped his move to South Australia with the domestic player of the year gong, while Queensland’s Joe Burns won the Bradman young cricketer of the year award.

Bowling champions Glenn McGrath and Charlie Turner were elevated to the Cricket Australia Hall of Fame.

Surprise packet McKay steals one-day gong

CLINT McKay added his name to an illustrious list when crowned Australia’s one-day international player of the year.

The consistent Victorian paceman, renowned for his change of pace and ability to curb scoring rates late in opposition innings, clearly led Australia’s bowling stocks through the ODI season, taking 26 wickets at 25.8 in his 18 matches and was stunned to upset some of the more high-profile names.

“I’m lost for words, it’s not something I expected at all,” McKay said.

“To win an award that’s voted by your peers, it’ something you treasure dearly.

“It’s been a long ride, a long process over 7-8 years … but going through the ranks, it’s been fantastic.”

Where the batting honours were more evenly contested, McKay shouldered by far the bulk of the bowling load, either leading or second in several key bowling statistics — overs bowled, maidens, best analysis and economy rate.

McKay, 29, took full votes from his match-winning 5-28 against Sri Lanka in Adelaide in March, but polled in nine other matches to finish on 30 votes, two clear of a tie for second between George Bailey and David Warner.

David Hussey was fourth on 27 votes from Australia’s full quota of 24 matches, while Shane Watson (23) and Michael Clarke (22) were also close up despite playing in little more than half the games.

McKay joins Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Nathan Bracken as the only bowlers to have won the top 50-over gong.

Shane Watson

Watson wins second straight T20 award

SHANE Watson’s slashing World Cup paved the way for his second consecutive T20 player of the year award tonight.

Watson, whose sublime World Cup featured 249 runs at at average of 49.8 and 11 wickets at 16, led Australia to the semi-finals of the global tournament in Sri Lanka in October with an unprecedented four consecutive man-of-the-match awards.

The 31-year-old, unfortunately plagued by injuries for much of the summer, was remarkably the highest runscorer for the tournament and second only to Sri Lankan spinner Ajantha Mendis in the bowlers’ aggregate.

Yet he still managed to poll enough votes from matches in the Carribean and middle-east earlier in the campaign to garner 42 votes (20 from players and 22 from media and umpires) to finish well ahead of David Warner (29) and George Bailey (16).

Interestingly, 18 of Warner’s votes were won via the media and umpires compared to just 11 from his teammates.

Emerging pace duo Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc were tied fourth on 13 votes, while Mike Hussey (12) was the only other player in double figures.

Watson clubbed a remarkable four half-centuries in the voting period, including three in four innings in the T20 World Cup.

His strike rate through the season, in which he totalled 406 runs, was also impressive at 144 per 100 balls faced.

Phil Hughes

Winning move for Hughes

AN off-season move to Adelaide paid off for Phil Hughes when he won his first domestic player of the year award at the Allan Border Medal tonight.

The resurgent left-hander, who has worked feverishly at his technique since moving from Sydney last year, garnered 33.8 per cent of the player votes to edge out Tasmanian paceman Jackson Bird (29.1 per cent) and former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting (17.6 per cent).

Hughes, 24, has made a splash since his much-publicised move west, earning his way back into the Australian Test team as the leading runscorer in the Sheffield Shield, as well as ranking second on the Ryobi Cup list.

His 1108 combined domestic runs for the voting period have come at striking average of 55.4 and include eight centuries, capped by the sublime 158 against Victoria at the MCG that ultimately won back his baggy green cap after twice being omitted since his Test debut in 2009.

His domestic form translated into two half-centuries against Sri Lanka in the Test arena, followed by two centuries after getting the nod for his ODI debut. His two tons in his first five ODIs is the best return for an Australian batsman.

Hughes, who won the Bradman young cricketer of the year award in 2009, now boasts a remarkable 21 centuries at first-class level.

Joe Burns

Burns takes out Bradman award

EMERGING Queensland batsman Joe Burns has won the Sir Donald Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year award.

Burns, 23, was a comfortable winner of the vote among his peers, polling 41.9 per cent for his domestic exploits and performances for Australia A in England last winter, beating South Australian Kane Richardson (14.2 per cent) and New South Welshman Patrick Cummins (10.8 per cent).

The dashing Bulls and Brisbane Heat right-hander made a century on his Sheffield Shield debut in 2010-11, then led Queensland’s aggregates the following season to underline his potential.

He was a key member of the Bulls’ Shield-winning team last summer and again showed his big-game flair with the Heat’s top score of 43 off 27 balls in their Big Bash League grand final triumph.

Burns scored 1038 runs across all three formats in the voting period at an average 35.9, including four centuries and two fifties.

The Bradman award was open to any player aged 24 or under who had not played more than 10 first-class matches before this voting period.

Jess Cameron

Cameron caps stellar season

MELBOURNE’S Jess Cameron has capped a stellar season, winning the Belinda Clark Award as Australia’s best women’s player.

Cameron, player of the match in the Women’s World Twenty20 final in October, polled 41 votes to edge out fellow Victorian Meg Lanning (36) and New South Wales all-rounder Lisa Sthalekar (26).

All three were key contributors in the Southern Stars’ WT20 title defence in Sri Lanka, beating hot favourite England in the final in Colombo.

The hard-hitting 23-year-old, who made her international debut in 2009 aged 19, made 525 runs in 15 matches during at an average of 52.50 at an incredible strike rate of 118.51 runs per 100 balls.

It was Cameron’s first Belinda Clark Award following retired all-rounder Shelley Nitschke’s four consecutive wins from 2009-12.

Lanning’s result was also her best in the Belinda Clark Award after making 768 runs at 51.2 through the voting period.
