Michael Waltrip, NASCAR and Swan Racing are teaming up to help bring eyeballs and attention to helping the community of Newtown, Conn., through the Sandy Hook School Support Fund.

Two-time Daytona 500 champion Waltrip will drive the No. 26 Toyota for Swan Racing in the race on Feb. 24, in honor of the 26 victims of the Sandy Hook shooting. His car will carry a decal that will remind fans and race viewers they can text donations to NEWTOWN to 80888.

The effort came about after officials from NASCAR, Swan Racing and Waltrip traveled to Newtown to meet with leaders in the community, first responders and families of the 26 victims.

Waltrip said that going to Newtown and shaking hands and hugging people that were directly affected was an amazing experience. He added that it was very fulfilling to be able to make the people in that community smile and give them something to look forward to.

“The car is beautiful and they loved it,” Waltrip said Thursday at NASCAR Media Day. “They were in disbelief that people would care enough to do what we’re going to do for them.

“As happens a lot in life with me, I felt like actually thanking them for allowing me to come into their world and allowing us to do this. They wanted to thank us for doing it, and that’s a great feeling.”

All monies from the fund, which was established by United Way of Western Connecticut and Newtown Savings Bank, will go toward helping the community heal from the events of Dec. 14, 2012.

Waltrip also confirmed that all three of his Sprint Cup cars will carry the decal for the Daytona 500, as well.

“Driving the No. 26 Sandy Hook School Support Fund Toyota is like nothing I have ever been part of in my NASCAR career,” Waltrip said. “It will be an emotional week knowing that we have the potential to do so much good for the Newtown community. I’m racing for a reason.”

CEO Brian France and his wife announced they will donate $50,000, which the NASCAR Foundation will match.

“That’s $100,000 already, and we just started,” Waltrip said. “And I know our 75 million fans will rally around texting “NEWTOWN” to 80888. We can make a real difference.”

France said he was excited to witness firsthand the NASCAR’s community’s embrace and support of the Sandy Hook School Support Fund.

“Being in Newtown last week and delivering a moment of happiness to that community was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced,” said France. “Looking out at a room of smiling faces amidst the aftermath of a horrible tragedy was very powerful. It hit me that the NASCAR industry and our passionate fan base have an unbelievable opportunity to rally around this cause and make a huge difference for a community in need.”

A Frenchwoman jailed in Mexico in 2007 for 60 years for kidnapping is to be freed, the Supreme Court has decided.

Florence Cassez had denied the charges and many irregularities have been found in the case, including a staged televised police raid.

Three judges on a panel of five voted to have Ms Cassez released immediately because her rights had been violated.

The case provoked tensions between Mexico and France, where news of her impending release was widely welcomed.

Ms Cassez’s mother, Charlotte, told French television the case had been full of suspense right to the end. “It’s an explosion of joy. I can’t quite believe it,” she said.

In a statement, President Francois Hollande said the decision marked the end of a “particularly painful period”.

“France thanks all those who, in Mexico as well as here at home, have fought so that truth and justice prevail.”

Sharp criticism

Florence Cassez was arrested in 2005 at a ranch near Mexico City where several hostages were found, but denied knowledge of the kidnappings, in which her former boyfriend was involved.

The decision to release her has been sharply criticised by one of the hostages, Ezequiel Elizalde, BBC Mexico correspondent Will Grant says.

Mr Elizalde testified against Ms Cassez and has condemned the Supreme Court’s decision as “disgusting”, describing Mexico’s institutions as “filth”.

This was the second time that the Supreme Court had taken a vote on freeing Ms Cassez.

Last March, however, the judges decided against her release, despite acknowledging serious irregularities in the process.

When first convicted, she was jailed for 96 years, But, in 2009, a court of appeal reduced the term to 60 years.

French authorities tried to extradite her, but the move was blocked by the Mexican government.

Mr Hollande’s predecessor in the Elysee Palace, Nicolas Sarkozy, championed the case and repeatedly clashed with the Mexican government of then-President Felipe Calderon.

Diplomatic tensions reached a peak two years ago when Mexican authorities cancelled a high-profile cultural event in Paris.

Prime Minister Cheick Modibo Diarra

11 December 2012             00:25 ET

The prime minister of Mali has resigned on state television, hours after being arrested by soldiers who were behind a military coup in March.

Cheik Modibo Diarra was detained on Monday at his home in the capital Bamako, reportedly on the orders of the coup leader Capt Amadou Sanogo.

He had been due to travel to France.

Tensions between the soldiers who led the coup and the civilian prime minister they were forced to appoint have been mounting.

In his address, Mr Diarra said: “Men and women who are worried about the future of our nation, you are hoping for peace. It’s for this reason that I, Cheikh Modibo Diarra, am resigning along with my entire government.”

A member of the president’s entourage earlier confirmed reports that the prime minister had been arrested, AFP reports.

The source said soldiers had: “smashed in the door of the prime minister’s residence and took him away a bit violently”.

“They said Captain Sanogo sent them to arrest him,” he added.

Security officials said he was driven to the Kati military camp, a sprawling military base where the 21 March coup was launched.

A spokesman for the group of soldiers, Bakary Mariko, told Reuters that Mr Diarra “wanted to leave the country having incited trouble”.

AFP said the prime minister had been due to have a medical check-up in France.

Mr Diarra, the son-in-law of a former Malian coup leader and president, had been leading an interim government of national unity.

It was formed in August in an attempt to restore stability following the coup, which allowed Islamists and Tuareg separatists to seize the entire northern half of the country.

The 60-year-old astrophysicist and premier supports plans to send a west African intervention force into the occupied territory to drive out the extremists.

Many within Mali’s military are opposed to foreign intervention, saying they need only financial and logistical support.

The United Nations warned on Monday that the north of the country is now “one of the potentially most explosive corners of the world”.

Seven years ago Isabelle Dinoire, became the first-ever person to have a face transplant. In a rare interview, she describes how she copes with the stares, and her yearning to meet the family of the woman whose face became her own.

“The most difficult thing is to find myself again, as the person I was, with the face I had before the accident. But I know that’s not possible,” says the 45-year-old mother of two from northern France.

“When I look in the mirror, I see a mixture of the two [of us]. The donor is always with me.”

After a moment, she adds: “She saved my life.”

Dinoire regularly turns down media requests and rarely agrees to be photographed. She comes across as relaxed and self-assured, but her traumatic ordeal has left its mark, physically and mentally.

She still has a visible scar running from above her nose to down under her chin where specialist doctors at Amiens University Hospital in northern France, spent 15 hours sewing the donor’s face on to hers. One of her eyes is slightly drooping.

Speaking with a slight impediment – and with almost alarming simplicity – she recounts how, in a fit of depression in May 2005, she took an overdose of sleeping pills in an attempt to end her life.

She awoke to find herself at home, lying beside a pool of blood, with her pet Labrador at her side. The dog had apparently found her unconscious, and desperate to rouse her, had gnawed away at her face.

“I couldn’t even begin to imagine it was my face or my blood – or that the dog had chewed my face,” she says.

The injuries to her mouth, nose and chin were so extreme that doctors immediately ruled out a routine face reconstruction. Instead they proposed a ground-breaking face transplant.

Skull showing transplant area for the operation on Richard Norris in the US in March 2012

Face transplant timeline

  • November 2005 – Isabelle Dinoire becomes the first person in the world to have a face transplant (nose, lips and chin) in France
  • April 2010 – The world’s first full face transplant is done by a team of doctors in Spain
  • March 2012 – US doctors conduct the most extensive face transplant to date (above – image courtesy University of Maryland Medical Center)
  • There have also been face transplants in Turkey and China

“From the first time I saw myself in the mirror after the operation I knew it was a victory. It didn’t look that good because of all the bandages, but I had a nose, I had a mouth – it was fantastic,” she says. “I could see in the eyes of the nurses that it was a success.”

Unable to speak properly due to a tracheotomy done for the operation, all she could murmur was a simple, “Thank you.”

Dinoire’s delight at her new face, however, quickly turned sour. She was completely unprepared for the attention her case brought her.

Pursued by the media, harassed by passers-by and curious onlookers, Dinoire spent months after the operation hidden away at home, not daring to venture out.

“It was excruciating. I live in a small town and so everyone knew my story. It wasn’t easy at the beginning. Children would laugh at me and everyone would say, ‘Look it’s her, it’s her.'” She felt like “a circus animal”.

Nowadays, people still recognise her around town, but the attention is “not as brutal” as before, she says.

“With time I have got used to my own face. This is what I look like, what I am like, who I am. If people stare at me insistently, I don’t care any more, I just stare back!” she says, with a hint of a smile.

But has her personality changed as well as her outward appearance? “No” she replies quickly, “I am the same, just with a different face.”

According to Prof Sylvie Testelin, one of the team that operated on Dinoire in Amiens, not every patient with severe facial injuries can be offered the chance of a transplant.

In 2005 no-one was really sure of the long-term effects on patients of taking a cocktail of drugs for the rest of their lives to prevent their body rejecting the new tissue.

But in the case of Dinoire – and the two other people in France who have had successful transplants since then – the benefits have far outweighed the risks.

“Nobody can imagine what it’s like to live without a face. She [Isabelle] can. But we must be sure it is right for the patient,” says Testelin.

Worldwide there have been a dozen or so successful operations – in the US, Spain, Turkey and China. “You cannot imagine the number of people who have wanted transplants, but it’s not a game or a race to do more and more,” she says.

One day Dinoire will have to face up to the possibility of a major rejection by her body, says Testelin. As her doctor, she too has to be prepared for this – though she hopes that day never comes.

An graphic showing the first full facial transplant

How it’s done

  • Face from dead donor is removed – veins, arteries, skin, muscles, and even some bones are taken
  • The patient is anaesthetised partway through surgery on the donor
  • The donor face and accompanying blood vessels are stitched to the patient

Dinoire is more sanguine about her future. “I tell myself it will be all right. If I take my drugs everything should go well,” she says.

She spends her days visiting a few close friends and walking her new pet dog – she was devastated that the Labrador she had in 2005 was put down.

Still prone to bouts of depression, she says she constantly thinks about the dead woman whose face she was given. Right after the operation she would surf the internet in search of details of the anonymous donor – whose identity French law will never allow her to know.

“When I feel down, or depressed, I look at myself in the mirror again and think of her. And I tell myself, I’m not allowed to give up. She gives me hope.”

One day Dinoire would even like to be able to meet the woman’s family, to thank them for what she describes as their “magical donation”.

Russia’s Arsen Galstyan claimed the men’s under 60kg extra-lightweight judo gold with victory over Japan’s Hiroaki Hiraoka in just 31 seconds.

Galstyan managed to turn his opponent and pinned Hiraoka for what was originally given as a waza-ari score.

However, after the Russian’s coach argued, the decision was reviewed and changed to a winning ippon score.

Britain’s Ashley McKenzie suffered an early exit from the competitionwhen he was beaten by Hiraoka.

McKenzie started brightly in his first Olympic contest but the number two seed and two-time World Championship silver medallist ended the bout with 50 seconds remaining by pinning the British judoka to achieve an ippon score.

Hiraoka overcame Elio Verde in his semi-final, the Italian then losing his bronze-medal contest to Brazil’s Felipe Kitadai.

Galstyan had beaten number one seed Rishod Sobirov in his semi-final, with the Uzbekistan judoka winning his bronze-medal match against France’s Sofiane Milous.

Camille Muffat of France held off a strong challenge from Allison Schmitt to win the Olympic 400 meters freestyle gold on Sunday.

Muffat, a 2011 world bronze medalist, managed to fend off the American in the final 50 meters to win in 4 minutes, 1.45 seconds, an Olympic record.

“I’m relieved and happy,” Moffat said. “I haven’t thought about all the work, I was thinking about the other swimmers and my family.”

“Being an Olympic champion was the most difficult dream to reach. I knew this year I was the best, but I didn’t expect to win.”

Beijing bronze medalist Schmitt was 0.34 seconds behind, with Britain’s Rebecca Adlington, 2008 gold medalist in both the 200 meters and 400 meters freestyle, claiming the bronze.

“I did not expect to medal,” Adlington said. “It’s a really tough race. The only disappointment is with the time.”

World record holder Frederica Pellegrini of Italy was fifth.
