Kelly Clarkson

October 4, 2012              1:04 p.m.

A decade after being crowned the inaugural “American Idol” champion, Kelly Clarkson has announced that she will issue her first career retrospective.

“Greatest Hits — Chapter 1″ will be released Nov. 19, and though the track list has yet to be unveiled, the set will likely include Clarkson’s sassy pop-rock anthems that have dominated radio over the last decade, including “Miss Independent,” “Since U Been Gone” and “My Life Would Suck Without You,” which topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 2009.

The compilation will also include three previously unreleased tracks, including the new single “Catch My Breath,” which will be serviced to radio and digital retailers on Tuesday. Clarkson co-wrote the single with Jason Halbert and Eric Olson.

“It’s been a decade now since I won ‘American Idol.’ Sometimes it feels longer because although it has been exciting, that was a lot of pressure to have as a 19 year old girl,” Clarkson wrote on her website Thursday. “To own a company, lead an organization as a business woman, and be able to create music I’m proud of has been tough, but inspiring, for me.

“To celebrate the strength and longevity that my fans, friends, and family have supported me with I wrote this song ‘Catch My Breath’ with one of my best friends that has seen me through everything. This song represents who I’ve been, what I’ve felt, and where I’m headed as not only an artist but as a 30 year old that is now smart enough to know that it’s time to stop, catch my breath, and be proud of not only what has been accomplished but of all the people that have helped me become the woman I am today.”

Since winning “Idol” in 2002, the singer has achieved platinum success and fought to be heard — her clash with legendary music mogul Clive Davis, over her darker, rock-driven 2007 album, “My December,” became infamous. The spat was quickly forgotten when she released “All I Ever Wanted” in 2009, which featured the massive hit “My Life Would Suck Without You.”

When The Times profiled Clarkson last year ahead of her latest album, “Stronger,” she admitted the disc was the first she’d released without having to battle label brass. The record’s empowering title track became her third single to hit No. 1.

“I’ve just been doing this for 10 years, and looking back, the past four albums were kind of … everybody going against the grain on each other,” she told The Times. “This album, I’m getting along with everyone, everyone is loving the same stuff and the stars are aligning. I think it’s because people know me better as an artist now. Producers and writers know me more. I’m not walking into a room and they don’t know a thing about me.”

Kelly Clarkson Wades Into Taylor Swift Controversy | Kelly Clarkson, Taylor Swift
Four days after what critics described as Taylor Swift‘s “pitch-challenged” performance at the Grammy Awards, Kelly Clarkson has weighed in on the controversy after Swift’s record label CEO criticized American Idol.

In a blog post, Clarkson responded to recent comments by Big Machine Records’s Scott Borchetta, who told the Associated Press that the four-time Grammy winner “is the voice of this generation. She speaks directly to [her fans], and they speak directly back to her.”

He added, “This is not American Idol. This is not a competition of getting up and seeing who can sing the highest note. This is about a true artist and writer and communicator.”

In a letter addressed to Borchetta, Clarkson wrote that she understood why he would defend Swift – he said, “We had a volume problem in the ear … She couldn’t hear herself like she had in rehearsal” – but said she found it “upsetting” that he attacked the star-making TV show.

“We not only hit the high notes, you forgot to mention we generally hit the ‘right’ notes as well,” the American Idol winner wrote.

Clarkson admitted that she, too, has had “shaky” performances, “and what my manager or label executives say to me and the public is ‘I’ll kick butt next time’ or ‘every performance isn’t going to be perfect.’ … I bring this up because you should take a lesson from these people and instead of lashing out at other artists (that in your ‘humble’ opinion lack true artistry), you should simply take a breath and realize that sometimes things won’t go according to plan or work out and that’s okay.”
