Mingjuan Wang

28 July 2012                 17:06 GMT

Mingjuan Wang won weightlifting gold for China in the 48kg section with a score of 205kg at the ExCel Centre.

The four-time world champion was a controversial pick for London 2012 after she was selected ahead of Tian Yuan, who won gold at China’s National Women’s Weightlifting Championships.

She repaid the faith and led after the snatch event to beat Japan’s Hiromi Miyake (197kg) into second.

North Korean Chun Hwa Ryang (192kg) took bronze with her final lift.

Wang, 26, missed the last two Olympics through injury and led Miyake by 4kg after the snatch.

She then lifted 110kg in the clean and jerk to secure the gold medal, before going on to successfully lift 114kg.

In taking silver Miyake is the third member of her family to win an Olympic medal. Her father took bronze in the 1968 Games, while her uncle Yoshinobu Miyake won gold at the 1964 and 1968 Olympics.

China’s Lin Qingfeng hoisted a total of 344kg in men’s 69 weightlifting and bagged first gold for Chinese male lifters at London Olympics on Tuesday.

Lin, 23, managed to lift all three attempts in snatch at 152kg, 155kg and 157kg, and succeeded in clean-and-jerk at 182kg and 187kg, but narrowly failed on his last attempt to set Olympic and world records in the clean-and-jerk with 198kg.

“The medal feels really heavy, but it feels good. It is worth all the hard work and training I did. Winning an Olympic gold is my dream, and I will take chances and do whatever I can to fullfill my dream,” Lin said.

Lin’s victory ended the gold medal hunger for Chinese male lifters, who were upset in the lighter 59kg and 66kg categories.

“It was about revenge for the two golds we missed out on in the lower divisions,” Lin said. “But even if I hadn’t won, there are more athletes in the Chinese team who would have won.”

“Pressure is building when two of our wolrd champions failed to claim a gold,” Chen Wenbin, coach of China’s male weightlifters said. “I told Lin to relax and not to worry about the outcome. This is Lin’s debut at an international event joined by renowned athletes. I’m very satisfied with his performance today.”

The silver medal went to Indonesia’s Triyatno in dramatic circumstances. The Indonesian snatched 145kg and took the necessary 188kg on his final jerk attempt and after a struggle, dropped the barbell and fell to the platform. But his despair turned to joy when he realised that the lift had earned the judges’ approval.

The bronze went to Romanian Razvan Constantin Martin, whose total of 332kg fell just 1kg short of the Indonesian.

Earlier at the Excel arena, Kazakhstan’s Maiya Maneza won the gold medal and set an Olymipic record of 245kg in total in the women’s 63kg category. Russian lifter Svetlana Tsarukaeva bagged the silver medal and Canada’s Christine Girard took the bronze.

Lei Sheng became the first Chinese man to win men’s Olympic foil gold, overcoming a brave bid from Egypt’s Alaaeldin Abouelkassem in the first final of the event since 1900 not to feature a European.

“I did not expect this, I was not thinking about this,” Lei, who prevailed 15-13, said through an interpreter with his pristine medal around his neck.

Lei forged an early 6-2 lead but Abouelkassem hit back. At one point he led 13-11 but Lei, who placed eighth at the 2008 Games, regained his composure to triumph.

The 28-year-old, ranked ninth in the world, had beaten former world champion Andrea Baldini in the semi-final round.

Abouelkassem, who beat two former world champions in London, was equally amazed to be standing on the podium, the first fencer from Africa to do so.

Byungchul Choi of South Korea took bronze.

Much was expected of Italy’s men’s foil team but they failed to match their female counterparts who enjoyed a clean sweep of the medals on opening day.

Baldini’s path to the 2012 games was longer than most, having tested positive for a banned diuretic before the Beijing Olympics.

He protested his innocence and fencing’s world governing body FIE noted an Italian prosecutor deemed an unidentified third party was responsible for his unknowingly ingesting a banned substance. Sanctioned with ineligibility for six months, he returned to win the 2009 world title.

“Yes, every match was very physical. I felt a lot the stress, not just from today but the last four years to think about being here at the Olympics. Yeah, I am tired,” he said through a translator, adding he will try for the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro.

EGYPTIAN BREAKTHROUGH

Abouelkassem, born to an Algerian mother and Egyptian father, said he feared most of all facing Baldini in the bronze medal match, using that motivation to beat Choi 15-12 in the semi-finals and head for the gold medal match against Lei.

“I still cannot believe it. I had to take 15 minutes to realize what I did. I am very happy,” he said of his silver medal.

“It was a dream of my dad and he left me three months ago,” the 2010 junior world champion said in reference to the death of his father.

Asked how important this medal was for his country, Abouelkassem said: “Not just my country but the whole of Africa. They need this medal to improve the fencing in Africa. Also in Egypt we need more money and attention from media.”

Canadian diver Roseline Filion celebrates with a coach after winning a bronze medal with Meaghan Benfeito in the women's synchro 10-metre platform competition at the London Aquatics Centre on Tuesday. (Clive Rose/Getty Images)

Tuesday July 31, 2012                 09:38 PM

These are early days, but so far, athletes from Quebec have done the heavy lifting when it comes to producing Canadian medals at the 2012 Olympics.

Four days are done. Four medals have been won. All six of the athletes involved in podium finishes have done the bulk of their training in La Belle Province.

It may be a coincidence but, then again, it may not.  Perhaps the results so far speak to the fact that an environment exists in that province which fosters high performance on the Olympic stage and in a variety of athletic disciplines.

We’ve seen this before.

It’s often not tangible but there seems to be an appreciation in Quebec for what these Olympians do.  Quite often, as it is with mogul skier Alexandre Bilodeau, figure skater Joannie Rochette and diver Alexandre Despatie, such athletes are regarded as celebrity figures and enjoy a certain amount of notoriety in their home province.

They are also exceptionally well supported in terms of resources.

“We train at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal and we have everything we need to succeed,” said diving bronze medallist Roseline Filion who partnered with Meaghan Benfeito to record Canada’s second medal of the Games in the 10-metre synchronized event.

“We have the gym where we train alongside the short track speedskaters, the dry land training facility, physiotherapy, psychologists and massage.  We have it all to be successful.”

Plus, the Quebec athletes have history on their side.

Tradition of divers

There is a tradition of divers who have succeeded like Sylvie Bernier, Annie Pelletier, Anne Montminy, Emilie Heymans, and the list goes on.  All of them have been Olympic medallists and all of them have honed their craft in Quebec.  Many of them still live in the province and are a constant reminder to aspiring athletes that success on the international stage is achievable.

“It’s very important to be surrounded by role models,” Meaghan Benfeito suggested.  “Annie Pelletier’s bronze medal in Atlanta was won 16 years ago today and it inspired me as a young diver to be here now.”

The same situation exists with judo’s Antoine Valois-Fortier and weightlifter Christine Girard, who also captured bronze medals on the fourth day of the London Games.

Valois-Fortier is coached by Nicolas Gill, a double Olympic medallist himself who carried the Canadian flag into the opening ceremony of the 2004 Athens Olympics. Meantime Girard, who was born in Ontario but grew up in Rouyn-Noranda, benefited from training in close proximity to Maryse Turcotte, an immensely popular lifter who was dubbed by some as “Mighty Mouse.”

The point is this.  There’s something special about Quebec when it comes to this kind of sport.  It seems that the athletes are valued, even revered in that place.

They do not make up a majority of the Canadian team but their numbers are significant.  Fifty-nine of the 277 athletes in the Maple Leaf contingent come from Quebec … there are more from both Ontario and British Columbia.

And it’s not a situation where the athletes who were successful today consider themselves distinct from or better than their teammates.

Meaghan Benfeito bristled noticeably when someone asked her about being especially proud of the day because all of the medallists were Quebecers.

“No, we are one big happy gang,” she said of the Canadian team.  “We are equally as proud of our home in Quebec as we are of our home in Canada.”

It was particularly well said.

For although the day and les belles medailles de bronze had a noticeable Quebecois hue. The sunset was coloured all-Canadian.

The Badminton World Federation has charged eight female Olympic doubles players with “not using one’s best efforts to win a match”.

Four pairs of players – two from South Korea, one from China and one from Indonesia – could be disciplined.

Meanwhile, Team GB’s gold medal hopes on day five of the Games lie mainly with rowers Helen Glover and Heather Stanning, and cyclist Bradley Wiggins.

And America’s Michael Phelps has won a record 19th Olympic medal.

China’s Yu Yang and Wang Xiaoli and South Koreans Jung Kyung-eun and Kim Ha-na were among those accused.

Earlier, their match was booed by spectators at Wembley Arena.

Both pairs were already through to the quarter-finals. Reports have suggested they both wanted to lose to secure an easier draw.

The South Koreans eventually won their match, to go on to play China’s Tian Qing and Zhao Yunlei.

The South Korean pair did not comment, but Yu said she and Wang were saving energy for the knockout stages.

The longest rally in the first game lasted four shots, with match referee Thorsten Berg coming on to court at one point to warn the players.

And a later match between South Korean third seeds Ha Jung-Eun and Kim Min-Jung and Indonesian pair Meiliana Juahari and Greysia Polii is also under scrutiny by the Badminton World Federation.

Both pairs of those teams had also already qualified for the knockout stages, with the winner of Group C to play Yu and Wang and the Korean pairs to face each other if Ha and Kim lost.

The Koreans eventually won by two sets to one.

A statement from the BWF confirmed that all four pairs would face charges of “not using one’s best efforts to win a match” and “conducting oneself in a manner that is clearly abusive or detrimental to the sport”.

A new trailer for the latest James Bond film Skyfall has given fans their first glimpse of Oscar-winning actor Javier Bardem’s blond villain in action.

Bardem’s character, named Silva, is seen confronting a manacled Bond, played by Daniel Craig, and is later shown disguised as a British policeman.

The trailer features actor Ben Whishaw as “The New Q” and explosive action in various London locales.

It also shows Bond being “killed” in action and M typing up his obituary.

Played by Dame Judi Dench, 007’s boss is then seen being chastised by Ralph Fiennes’ character Gareth Mallory for losing a disc drive containing details of undercover British agents.

Subsequent scenes depict an explosion at MI6’s Thameside HQ and a Tube train plummeting into an underground vault.

The trailer reveals previously unknown plot points, one of which appears to have been drawn from Ian Fleming’s novel You Only Live Twice.

The 1964 book concludes with an obituary for Bond written by M after the secret agent is believed to have been killed during a mission in Japan.

The latest trailer comes shortly after Craig’s cameo appearance during the Olympic Opening Ceremony in a short film that showed Bond escorting the Queen to the Olympic Stadium.

Audiences in the US were treated to a teaser of the new footage during NBC’s telecast of the London 2012 launch.

Daniel Craig in Skyfall
Daniel Craig’s James Bond features in another newly released Skyfall image

Other scenes unveiled on Tuesday include one showing British actress Naomie Harris, in her role as field agent Eve, “shooting” Bond off the roof of a moving train in Turkey.

Skyfall, to be released in the UK on 26 October, marks Craig’s third big-screen appearance as Fleming’s legendary spy.

The 44-year-old was previously seen in the role in 2006’s Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace in 2008.

Spanish actor Bardem won the best supporting actor Oscar in 2008 for his villainous role in No Country for Old Men.

The 43-year-old, who is married to fellow Spaniard Penelope Cruz, was also Oscar-nominated in 2001 and 2011.
