After being banned from Google+, hacking group Anonymous has decided to set up its own social network called AnonPlus. The group’s Google+ account, which was called Your Anon News, was removed due to community standards violations.

In a blog post announcing AnonPlus, Anonymous says,

As some of you know we got banned from Google+ due to some of our content. What we didn’t know at the time is that we were just one of a handfull [sic] of Anonymous accounts that was silenced. This is the sad fact of what happens across the internet when you walk to a different beat of the drum. We’ve all heard the stories of activists being banned from FaceBook, Twitter, YouTube, and governments blocking their people from these sites as well through organized black outs. That day has came to an end. Not only did a few people organized an Operation ageist [sic] Google+, but we have started to build our own Social Network.

This is one social network that will not tolerate being shut down, censored, or oppressed – even in the face of blackout. We the people have had enough…enough of governments and corporations saying what’s best for us – what’s safe for our minds.

The sheep era is over. The interwebz are no longer your prison.

Welcome to Anon+

While Anonymous has launched Anonplus.com, the website only features a holding page at the time of this writing. According to Wired, Anonymous says that AnonPlus will launch soon — albeit not overnight — and that it will be for everyone, not just Anonymous members.

In an era when social networks are facing scrutiny over their privacy measures — look at the issues surrounding Google Buzz, Twitter and Facebook, for instance — it is an interesting idea to create a social network that puts user privacy above anything else. Google has taken a step towards users controlling their privacy with the Circles concept. However, a truly anonymous social network could ensure complete safety when connecting with others.

It is not quite clear how AnonPlus will work. For example, how might you be able to truly connect with others if you are anonymous? Perhaps you will be asked to add some of your personal information so that people you know can find you or perhaps you will only be identified by a screen name.

Having said that, if AnonPlus requires you to hand over any personal information, I wonder how many people would be comfortable in handing this data over to a hacktivist group. I would have to say not very many.
