In 2007, Paul Watson persuaded the Discovery Channel to make a reality show documentary about the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society’s campaign against Japanese whaling in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary off the coast of Antarctica. The Japanese claim that their whaling is legally accepted research, which Sea Shepherd and others contend is a cover for banned commercial whaling. Sea Shepherd has been both criticized and praised for tactics of direct action sabotage which include throwing stink bombs of butyric acid as well as ramming, boarding, and otherwise attempting to disable the Japanese vessels.
The program premiered on November 7, 2008, on the Animal Planet cable channel and follows events on the vessel Steve Irwin as the group attempts to deter the hunting of Minke and Fin whales in the Southern Ocean. The show came at a time when Animal Planet was being rebranded to attract broader audiences and compete with non-animal-centric programming.
Synopsis
Season one
The 2007-08 Antarctic campaign was named Operation Migaloo, after the only known albino humpback in the world. This campaign was the focus of the first season of Whale Wars, which premiered on November 7, 2008.
On January 15, 2008, after attempting to entangle the whaling vessel’s propeller and throwing containers of butyric acid onto the decks, two Sea Shepherd members, Benjamin Potts and Giles Lane, from the Sea Shepherd vessel MV Steve Irwin boarded the Japanese whaling vessel Yushin Maru No. 2 from a rigid-hulled inflatable boat. The pair were delivering a letter advising the Japanese that they were “whaling illegally” with the hope of creating an international incident. The Japanese responded by saying that the men would be held until Sea Shepherd stopped what they called “dangerous and illegal activities.”
The crew of the Yushin Maru No. 2 detained the men for two days, before turning them over to the Australian customs vessel MV Oceanic Viking on the orders of Japanese authorities; subsequently, the Steve Irwin rendezvoused with the Oceanic Viking and the two crewmembers were returned to Sea Shepherd. On April 9, first mate Peter Brown was described in a newspaper article as saying that the incident only became a hostage situation because the Sea Shepherd vessel left the scene, so the Japanese would be forced to hold the two crewmen longer. He was quoted as saying, “It’s all giant street theater.”
On March 3, Sea Shepherd members threw bottles of butyric acid and packages of slippery methyl cellulose powder onto the Japanese vessel Nisshin Maru. Australian foreign minister Stephen Smith condemned Sea Shepherd’s actions for potentially causing injury The Japanese Government called in the Australian and Dutch ambassadors to protest the actions and urge those countries to prevent any violence. Watson said: “They are so full of crap. We filmed and photographed the entire thing. Not a single thing landed anywhere near their crew … It is their way of trying to get sympathy.”
The International Whaling Commission issued a statement on March 8, 2008 that “called upon the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society to refrain from dangerous actions that jeopardise safety at sea, and on vessels and crews concerned to exercise restraint.” The statement also reiterated earlier IWC resolutions from May and July 2007 that read in part, “The commission and its contracting governments do not condone and in fact condemn any actions that are a risk to human life and property in relation to the activities of vessels at sea.” The Australian Government also called for all parties to “excercise restraint” and “responsible behaviour” in the Southern Ocean.
On March 17, 2008 Paul Watson claimed that he was shot by the Japanese crew or coast guard personnel during the campaign. The incident is heavily documented during the show in the final episode, and the first six episodes are covered as a buildup to what is portrayed as the major incident during the campaign. The footage in Whale Wars shows Watson standing on the deck of the Steve Irwin while Sea Shepherd crew throws glass bottles filled with butyric acid at the Nisshin Maru whaling vessel. The Japanese respond by throwing flashbang devices. Watson is then shown reaching inside his jacket and bullet-proof vest and remarking “I’ve been hit.” Back inside the bridge of the Steve Irwin, a metal fragment is found inside the vest. The Institute of Cetacean Research has dismissed Sea Shepherd’s statements as lies. The Institute and Coast Guard said that they used seven flashbang devices designed to flash and make noise in the air without causing harm. Neither of the two conflicting accounts have been independently verified. The Australian Foreign Affairs Department had condemned “actions by crew members of any vessel that cause injury”. Two media releases were made on the same day from the office. One said that the Australian Embassy in Tokyo had been informed by the Japanese that the whalers had “fired warning shots” while the updated version used the phrase “‘warning balls’ – also known as ‘flashbangs’ – had been fired”, and that no gunshots had occurred.
Season two
The 2008-2009 Antarctic campaign was named Operation Musashi after the 17th-century Japanese strategist Miyamoto Musashi. On December 4, 2008, actress Daryl Hannah joined Sea Shepherd’s crew aboard the Steve Irwin to take part in this season’s operation.
On February 6, 2009, Watson reported that the Steve Irwin had collided with the Yushin Maru 2 as the Steve Irwin tried to block its attempt to prevent the transfer of a dead whale up the slipway of the factory ship Nisshin Maru. As Watson explained the incident, “We were in the process of blocking the transfer from the Yushin Maru 2 when the Yushin Maru 1 moved directly in front of the bow to block us. I could not turn to starboard without hitting the Yushin Maru 1. I tried to back down but the movement of the Yushin Maru 2 made the collision unavoidable.” The Japanese whalers blamed Sea Shepherd for the crash, characterizing the incident as a “deliberate ramming.” The collision was filmed by cameramen for the Whale Wars reality series, and formed part of a multi-day conflict during which Sea Shepherd attempted to prevent the Japanese fleet from harpooning whales, respectively tried to block whales from being transferred to the factory ship for processing by blockading the Japanese’ vessel’s slipway. The Japanese made extensive use of LRADs to deter Sea Shepherd. They were also accused of aiming the device at the Steve Irwin’s helicopter while in flight, something the group especially condemned, seeing that the helicopter was only engaged in filming, and could have crashed if the pilot had lost control.
Season three
At the start of the campaign, Marjorie Kaplan, president and general manager of Animal Planet, said in a news release: “The issues surrounding whaling in the southern ocean are important and complex. The majesty of these beautiful creatures and the lengths to which the Sea Shepherds will go in order to prevent whaling has made Whale Wars intense and vital television.” She also said that Japan had denied requests to film on their vessels.
In June 2009, Sea Shepherd announced its 2009-10 Antarctic campaign, called Operation Waltzing Matilda. The campaign would include the record-breaking Earthrace vessel, now renamed Ady Gil in honor of the benefactor who helped acquire the vessel for Sea Shepherd. The Ady Gil was a futuristic styled ship that held the world record for circumnavigation of the globe by a motorized vessel. The eco-friendly vessel usually ran on a low emission fuel “derived mainly from animal fat, soybeans or other forms of bio-diesel” but was forced by operational reasons to switch to a more polluting petroleum diesel. Pete Bethune, the operator, said that an agreement was reached with Sea Shepherd for the boat to adopt a support role.
Captain Paul Watson and his crew of 40 left with the Steve Irwin and Ady Gil from Fremantle, Australia, and from Hobart, Tasmania, respectively, last December. It was well publicized that the Sea Shepherds had added more vessel firepower to keep up with the larger, faster and more numerous whaling vessels. What they kept secret, however, was that Bob Barker, famous for “The Price Is Right” and one of the best-known personalities in the world of animal activism, donated funds to purchase a third vessel to add to the Sea Shepherd’s fleet. Ironically, the ship is a former Norwegian whaling vessel but has since been renamed and refitted. With a crew of 26 and led by Captain Chuck Swift and first officer and Whale Wars veteran Peter Hammarstedt, the Bob Barker was docked off the coast of Africa on the island nation of the Republic of Mauritius, until it was ready to join its Sea Shepherd colleagues and engage in a surprise “engagement” to stop whaling.

Bob Barker is a strong advocate for animal rights; in particular, he’s an animal-rights activist, which means he has puts his name on the line and his money where his mouth is.
For years he ended ‘The Price Is Right’ by urging people to get their pets neutered; in 1987 he stepped down as host of the Miss USA/Universe Pageants because that organization wouldn’t eliminate fur prizes. In January of this year, he donated $5 million to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society to purchase a ship to thwart illegal Japanese whaling operations.
On Wednesday’s ‘The Huckabee Show’ (weekdays, syndicated), Barker appeared with Chuck Swift, captain of the MV Bob Barker, the anti-whaling ship named after the game-show host, and the pair discussed the international whaling treaties broken by the Japanese, Barker’s donation to the Sea Shepherd society, and the successes they have made in saving whales from destruction.

Paul Franklin Watson (born December 2, 1950) is a controversial and outspoken Canadian animal rights and environmental activist, who founded and is president of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, a direct action group devoted to marine conservation.
The Toronto native joined a Sierra Club protest against nuclear testing in 1969. He was an early and influential member of Greenpeace, crewed and skippered for it, and later was a board member. Watson argued for a strategy of direct action that conflicted with the Greenpeace interpretation of nonviolence, was ousted from the board in 1977, and subsequently left the organization. That same year, he formed Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. The group is the subject of a reality show, Whale Wars.
He also promotes veganism, voluntary human population control, and a biocentric, rather than anthropocentric, worldview.
Paul Watson was born in Toronto to Anthony Joseph Watson and Annamarie Larsen, and grew up in St. Andrews, New Brunswick. After working as a tour guide at Expo 67, the World’s Fair that took place in Montreal in 1967, Watson “rode the rails” in boxcars west to Vancouver.
In 1968 and the early 1970s, he joined the Canadian Coast Guard, where he served aboard weatherships, search and rescue hovercraft, and buoy tenders. He signed up as a merchant seaman in 1969 with the Norwegian Consulate in Vancouver and shipped out on the 35,000 ton bulk carrier Bris as a deck hand. The Bris was registered in Oslo, Norway and manifested for the Indian Ocean and Pacific trade.
Watson has one child (born 1980) with his first wife, Starlet Lum, a founding director of Greenpeace Quebec, Earthforce!, Project Wolf, and Sea Shepherd. His second wife, Lisa DiStefano, a former Playboy model, was Sea Shepherd’s Director of Operations during the Makah anti-whaling campaigns in Friday Harbor. His third wife, Allison Lance, is an animal rights activist and a volunteer crew member of Sea Shepherd.
In October 1969, Watson joined a Sierra Club protest against nuclear testing at Amchitka Island. The group which formed as a result of that protest was the Don’t Make a Wave Committee, which evolved into the group known today as Greenpeace. Watson sailed as a crewmember aboard the Greenpeace Too! ship in 1971 and skippered the Greenpeace boat Astral in 1972. Paul Watson continued as a crew member, skipper, and officer aboard several Greenpeace voyages throughout the mid-1970s. According to Watson, in June 1975 during a Greenpeace campaign to confront Soviet whaling, an incident occurred which changed his life.
Greenpeace states that Watson “…was an influential early member but not, as he sometimes claims, a founder.” Paul Watson has characterized the Greenpeace position as “revisionism”.
The first Sea Shepherd vessel, the Sea Shepherd, was purchased in December 1978 with assistance from Fund for Animals. Sea Shepherd soon established itself as one of the more controversial environmental groups, known for provocative direct action tactics. These tactics have included throwing objects onto the decks of whaling ships, the use of “prop foulers” in an attempt to sabotage the ships, boarding whaling vessels, and the scuttling of two ships in an Icelandic harbor. Watson remains the leader of Sea Shepherd today and uses the title “Captain” in reference to his role in the organization, although he has never been licensed as a ship’s captain. The organization and its activities to halt whaling are the focus of a reality TV series, Whale Wars, airing on Animal Planet.
Watson was a field correspondent for Defenders of Wildlife from 1976 to 1980 and a field representative for the Fund for Animals from 1978 to 1981. Watson also was a co-founder of Friends of the Wolf and Earthforce Environmental Society.
During the 1980s, Watson declared his support for Earth First! and cultivated friendships with David Foreman and Edward Abbey. He proclaimed Sea Shepherd to be the “navy” of Earth First! Watson has claimed to have invented the tactic of tree spiking.
Although currently unaffiliated with it, Watson did work with the Green Party of British Columbia in Vancouver in the 1980s and 90s. He ran for mayor in 1996, placing fourth.
In April 2003, Watson was elected to the board of directors of the Sierra Club for a three-year term. In 2006, he did not seek re-election. He resigned from the board a month before his term ended, in protest against the organization’s sponsorship of a “Why I Hunt” essay contest.
Watson feels that “no human community should be larger than 20,000 people,” human populations need to be reduced radically to “fewer than one billion,” and only those who are “completely dedicated to the responsibility” of caring for the biosphere should have children, which is a “very small percentage of humans.” He likens humankind to a virus, the biosphere needs to get cured from with a “radical and invasive approach,” as from cancer. In January 2008 Paul Watson was named by The Guardian as one of its “50 people who could save the planet” for the work of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.
Watson published Earthforce!, a guide to strategy for environmental activists in 1993. In it, he specifically endorsed the tactics of “monkeywrenching” previously described by Dave Foreman and Edward Abbey. According to Foreman in Eco-Defense—The Field Guide to Monkey-Wrenching, these are tactics of sabotage, covert activity, and direct action. Watson says he incorporated his own personal experience in writing the book.
In Earthforce! An Earth Warrior’s Guide to Strategy, Watson also expresses disdain for truthfulness in the pursuit of environmental protection goals:
The nature of the mass media today is such that the truth is irrelevant. What is true and what is right to the general public is what is defined as true and right by the mass media. Ronald Reagan understood that the facts are not relevant. The media reported what he said as fact. Follow-up investigation was “old news.” A headline comment on Monday’s newspaper far outweighs the revelation of inaccuracy revealed in a small box inside the paper on Tuesday or Wednesday.
Watson was explicit on this score: “If you do not know an answer, a fact, or a statistic, then simply follow the example of an American President and do as Ronald Reagan did—make it up on the spot and deliver the information confidently and without hesitation.” In a subsequent book, Ocean Warrior, Watson reiterated this view, saying: “Survival in a media culture meant developing the skills to understand and manipulate media to achieve strategic objectives.”
Paul Watson continued as a crewmember, officer, and skipper (in 1972) aboard several Greenpeace voyages throughout the mid-1970s. He considers himself a founding member of Greenpeace and Greenpeace International, a claim Greenpeace disputes. Friends noted that his personality, his liking to “push himself front and centre”, was to blame in addition to his espousing direct actions that Greenpeace considered too controversial.
In 1977, Watson was expelled from the Greenpeace’s board of directors by a vote of 11 to 1 (Watson himself cast the single vote against it). The group felt his strong, “front and center” personality and frequently voiced opposition to Greenpeace’s interpretation of “nonviolence” were too divisive. Watson subsequently left the group. The group has since labeled his actions at the time as those of a “mutineer” within their ranks. That same year, he founded his own group, the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.
During an interview in 1978 with CBC Radio, Watson spoke out against Greenpeace (as well as other organizations) and their role and motives for the anti-sealing campaigns. Watson accused these organizations of campaigning against the Canadian seal hunt because it is an easy way to raise money and it is a profit maker for the organizations.
Greenpeace has called Watson a violent extremist and will no longer comment on his activities.
Watson was arrested in 1993 in Canada on charges stemming from actions against Cuban and Spanish fishing boats off the coast of Newfoundland. In 1997, Watson and his then fiancée Lisa Distefano were convicted in absentia by a court in Lofoten, Norway on charges of attempting to sink the small scale Norwegian fishing and whaling vessel Nybrænna on 26 December 1992, and sentenced to serve 120 days in jail but Dutch authorities refused to hand him over to Norwegian authorities although he did spend 80 days in detention in the Netherlands before being released.
There have not been any successful attempts at prosecuting Watson for his activities with Sea Shepherd since the trial in Newfoundland. Watson himself defends his actions as falling within international law, in particular Sea Shepherd’s right to enforce maritime regulations against illegal whalers and sealers.[43] Watson caught a Costa Rican fishing boat poaching in Guatemalan waters while he was on a journey to Costa Rica, having been invited by its president to help in the fight against shark poaching there. The authorities in Costa Rica later filed seven charges of attempted murder against Watson and a colleague, Rob Stewart, in what Watson and Stewart have described as an effort to cover up mafia-funded illegal shark finning operations. They eventually fled to international waters to escape arrest by Costa Rican coast guards after they had filmed what they attest was mafia-funded shark-finning in private docks. These events are featured in Sharkwater, a documentary about sharks and activism.
Watson was also told to leave Iceland after having turned himself in to the Icelandic police after disabling two ships in harbor. Kristjan Loftsson of Iceland’s largest whaling company told The New Yorker that Watson is persona non grata in that country.
In April 2010, the Japanese Coast Guard obtained an arrest warrant for Watson “…on suspicion of ordering sabotage activities against Japan’s whaling fleet.”
After his election to the national Sierra Club Board of Directors in 2003, Watson supported an unsuccessful slate of candidates supporting strict immigration controls as an element of a population stabilization policy. This effort was denounced by another candidate in the election, Morris Dees of the Southern Poverty Law Center, as a “hostile takeover” attempt by “radical anti-immigrant activists.” Watson responded by saying that the only change he was seeking in the organization’s immigration stance was to restore the position it had held before its 1996 “neutrality policy.” Watson left the Sierra Club board in 2006.
In April 2008, Watson stated that, while the deaths of three Canadian seal hunters (a fourth one is still missing) in a marine accident involving a Canadian Coast Guard vessel and a fishing boat during the 2008 Canadian Commercial Seal Hunt were a tragedy, he felt that the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of seals is an even greater tragedy. Canadian Federal Fisheries Minister Loyola Hearn accused Watson of trivializing the memory of the lost sealers. Watson replied that Mr. Hearn was trying to distract attention from his government’s incompetence as the boat the men were on capsized while under tow by a Canadian Coast Guard vessel, while his political ambitions continued to support and subsidize an industry that had no place in the 21st Century. Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Danny Williams was quoted as saying, “I think what a lot of people don’t realize is that this man is a terrorist.” In response, Watson said that calling him a ‘terrorist’ might be cute, but it had no foundation in reality, as he had never injured anyone, or been convicted of a crime. Due to the operations against Canadian seal hunters, Danny Williams called Watson a terrorist and said that the Sea Shepherds were not welcome in the province.
In October 2009 Watson, who carries a US passport, complained to media outlets about having his request for an Australian visa denied. He states that the Australian government was attempting to sabotage the upcoming 2010 Sea Shepherd campaign by denying him entry into the country. Watson and several other shipmates were also unable to join the MV Steve Irwin on its promotional tour of Australia until they were able to provide documentation from the governments of the United States, Canada and Norway, exonerating them from previously claimed acts of violence, specifically claims by Sea Shepherd of intentionally sinking a ship in Norway.
On March 17, 2008 Paul Watson said that he was shot by the Japanese crew or coast guard personnel during the Operation Migaloo anti-whaling campaign in the Southern Ocean. The incident is documented during the season finale of season 1 of the Whale Wars TV reality show, and the first six episodes are covered as a buildup to what is portrayed as the major incident during the campaign. The footage in Whale Wars shows Watson standing on the deck of the Steve Irwin while Sea Shepherd crew throws glass bottles filled with butyric acid at the Nisshin Maru whaling vessel. Butyric acid was used for its foul odor and sticky properties. The Japanese respond by throwing flashbang devices. Watson is then shown reaching inside his jacket and body armour and remarking “I’ve been hit.” Back inside the bridge of the Steve Irwin, a metal fragment is found inside the vest.
The Japanese Institute of Cetacean Research has dismissed Sea Shepherd’s statements as lies. The Institute and Coast Guard said that they used seven flashbang devices designed to flash and make noise in the air without causing harm. Neither of the two conflicting accounts have been independently verified. The Australian Foreign Affairs Department had condemned “actions by crew members of any vessel that cause injury”. Two media releases were made on the same day from the office. One said that the Australian Embassy in Tokyo had been informed by the Japanese that the whalers had “fired warning shots” while the updated version used the phrase “‘warning balls’ – also known as ‘flashbangs’ – had been fired”.
Watson has been called an eco terrorist by the Japanese government for his direct action tactics against whalers, and have repeated their position after conflicts during the 2009-10 whaling season.
His leadership style has variously been called arrogant, as well as pushing himself too much “front and center”,” which was cited as being one of the reasons he and Greenpeace parted ways. The atmosphere aboard his vessels has been compared to an “anarchy run by God”.
At an animal rights convention in 2002, Paul Watson was also quoted as saying, “There’s nothing wrong with being a terrorist, as long as you win. Then you write the history.” Recently, Fox News commentator Glenn Beck also discussed the comment, criticizing Watson’s views. Watson responded to Beck’s comments on the official Sea Shepherd website by stating that he had said that but that it was taken out of context, quoting Gerald Seymour‘s “One man’s terrorist is another’s freedom fighter.”
Watson has stated that he does not consider himself a ‘protester‘, but an ‘interventionist‘, as he considers protesting as too submissive. He often takes the attitude that he represents (or stands in for) law enforcement which is either unwilling or unable to enforce existing laws.

Born and raised in Southern California, Chuck Swift, 44, has a history of involvement in conservation and animal welfare issues spanning the last 20 years.
Swift began volunteering for Sea Shepherd in 1990 and remained involved for nearly a decade. His campaign roster includes the 1994 Whales Forever campaign in which Sea Shepherd was violently attacked by the Norwegian Coast Guard, multiple seal campaigns including the explosive 1996 confrontation in the Magdalene Islands, and a variety of other campaigns before and after.
During his absence from Sea Shepherd, he worked in various professions, earned a degree in Business Administration, a professional certificate in Change Leadership from Cornell University, and as time permits, he continues his studies toward a Masters in Communication and Leadership. Since his return to Sea Shepherd in early 2009, he has functioned as Sea Shepherd’s Deputy CEO, positively influencing both the administrative and ship operations sides of organization – most notably helping to secretly acquire, refit and then ultimately captain Sea Shepherd’s newest ship the Bob Barker during Operation Waltzing Matilda.
Swift believes that the time for talking is over, and prefers a direct action approach on behalf of Sea Shepherd’s customers (“the salty ones”) currently threatened by societal greed and exploitation. While serious about his dedication to the protection of marine and other ecosystems, Swift maintains that a good sense of humor and positive attitude are critical to the success of any movement. Peter James “Pete” Bethune (born April 4, 1965) is a New Zealand promoter of bio-fuels and conservationist. He is the holder of the world record for the fastest trip around the world in a powerboat and is involved with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. He was captain of the Ady Gil (previously the Earthrace) until it sank following a collision with a Japanese whaling vessel. He was convicted in Japan for a direct action that involved boarding a whaling vessel and received a suspended sentence.
Personal life and early career
Bethune grew up in Hamilton East, New Zealand as one of five children. He studied science at the University of Waikato and engineering at the University of Auckland. He has two daughters with his wife, Sharyn, from whom he is separated.
He began his career as an oil exploration engineer and worked in the North Sea and Libya. In 1997, he co-founded CamSensor Technologies. The company manufactured automated camera systems for controlling robots used in complex tasks such as cutting up and grading meat carcasses. He later moved to Sydney to establish the business there.
He is adamant about the potential for alternative fuels. In 2003, Bethune wrote a 20,000-word paper while pursuing his Master of Business Administration degree from Macquarie University about the use of renewable energy for road transport. In regards to him enjoying fishing and hunting along with his previous occupations, Bethune told a reporter for The New Zealand Herald: “I’ve come from a very unusual background to be a conservationist.”
Captain of Earthrace

Based on his research at Macquarie, Bethune set out to prove that hydrocarbon fuels could be replaced by sustainable bio-fuels. He had Earthrace designed and built in order to break the world record for a circumnavigation by a powerboat in hopes that it would call attention to the viability of bio-diesel as an alternative fuel. He mortgaged his New Zealand home and financed the building in the hopes of recouping the expenses from sponsorships. He declined a $4 million sponsorship from a company that would have required them to use regular diesel.
His first attempt began in Barbados on March 10, 2007. He encountered significant delays due to issues with the propellers and other mechanical problems. On the night of March 19, while around 22 kilometres (14 mi) offshore from Guatemala, Earthrace collided with a local fishing boat. No Earthrace crew were hurt, but one of the three crew members from the fishing boat was killed. The crew was absolved of any responsibility after a 10-day investigation during which they were held in custody. The delays prevented them from completing the circumnavigation in record time, but because Earthrace took an official start time when leaving San Diego, the team decided to “restart” with this new start/finish line. They departed San Diego on April 7, 2007 and needed to return by June 21 to break the record. The attempt was abandoned on May 31 after a crack was discovered in the hull shortly after leaving Malaga, Spain.
He departed from Valencia, Spain, in another attempt on March 1, 2008. As a publicity stunt, Bethune and two others had undergone liposuction in order to convert a small amount of their own body fat into fuel. The idea arose from a previous plan to tour New Zealand in a car with an attached mobile bio-diesel plant. He finished at the Spanish port of Sagunto on June 27. The journey was completed in 60 days, 23 hours and 49 minutes, beating the former record by over two weeks. Bethune then embarked on a world tour with the vessel to promote awareness of alternative fuels.

After touring ports around the globe, the Earthrace was put on sale for $2.6 million and Bethune considered using it to interfere with Japanese whaling in the Southern Ocean if a buyer could not be found. Hollywood production-house owner Ady Gil purchased the boat and Earthrace was renamed after him on October 17, 2009. Gil left the ship to Bethune and a crew of five who refitted for Antarctic waters to participate in anti-whaling activities as part of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Bethune said before the operation: “I’m a conservationist. One of the things I’ve learned on Earthrace is stand up for stuff you believe in. Year after year the Japanese go down there and nothing seems to change… If they want to go amping things up a bit, then bring it on.” His wife later told the press that he first became alarmed by the state of the oceans when skippering the vessel during the record attempts.
On January 6, 2010 the Ady Gil was involved in a collision with the Japanese whaling vessel MV Shōnan Maru 2 in the Southern Ocean, and the Ady Gil subsequently sank. An investigation into the collision by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) was inconclusive and unable to assign blame for the collision. AMSA was unable to verify claims made by Sea Shepherd, while the Japanese government declined to participate with the investigation saying any information it had might be needed for an inquiry by its own authorities.
Arrest, trial, and conviction
On February 15, 2010, Bethune boarded the Shōnan Maru 2 claiming to be conducting a citizen’s arrest on her captain, Hiroyuki Komiya, alleging attempted murder and to present a claim for $3 million for the loss of his vessel. Japan’s Institute of Cetacean Research issued a statement calling it a publicity stunt. He used a jet ski to approach the ship then climbed onto its deck after cutting through an anti-boarding net that was draped around the hull. He was detained by the ship’s crew and taken to Tokyo, where he was arrested by the Japanese Coast Guard on March 12 on charges of trespassing.
On April 2, 2010, Bethune was indicted in Japan on five charges: trespassing, assault, illegal possession of a knife, destruction of property and obstruction of business. The assault charge is based on the allegation that he threw a bottle of butyric acid onto the Shōnan Maru 2 days before the boarding, causing chemical burns to a whaler’s face. The Sea Shepherd group claims the burns were self-inflicted when the crewman was shooting pepper spray at the protesters. Bethune could have faced up to 15 years in prison if found guilty of injury, or up to three years if found guilty of trespass. Bethune’s lawyer claims the charges are unfounded and states that his client will strongly deny them. He was held without bond in the maximum security Tokyo Detention Centre while he stood trial.
Bethune’s trial began on May 27. Bethune was charged with intruding on the ship, forcibly obstructing business, violating the Firearms and Swords Control Law and damaging property.
Several major newsmedia reported that Bethune pleaded guilty to four charges while others reported that he admitted four charges or that he conceded four of the charges but has contested an assault charge. Newsreview.com claims that Bethune did not “plead” guilty as there is no such thing as a plea in Japanese criminal proceedings and he and his Japanese lawyers claim that Sea Shepherd’s actions are protected by the United Nations World Charter for Nature, which allows private organizations to interfere in government-like ways in the interest of the environment. Though he admitted to launching a projectile of butyric acid, he contested the assault charge against him on the grounds that he lacked intent to injure the ship’s crew. In his tearful final statement delivered on June 10, Bethune said: “I did not have the intention of hurting crew members. I took action because I wanted to stop Japan’s illegal whaling.” Prosecutors demanded a sentence of two years in prison.
The Labour Party’s Chris Carter accused the New Zealand Government of “washing their hands of the fate” of Bethune. Bethune has received visitations from consular staff. Prime Minister John Key said “…it’s worth noting that I can’t get involved in a prosecution in another country any more than I can get involved in a prosecution in New Zealand. What I can do is make sure the person is being treated fairly.”
On June 4, in what was later said by Paul Watson to be a legal strategy on the part of Sea Shepherd, Sea Shepherd announced that it was no longer going to be formally associated with Bethune since a set of bow and arrows was on the Ady Gil during the anti-whaling operation. The group stressed that the weapon was not intended to be used against any person, and Bethune previously had stated to Animal Planet cameras during Whale Wars filming that he intended to use the bow and arrows to spoil whale meat for commercial use. Sea Shepherd said it would continue to support Bethune during the trial in Japan. On July 7, Pete Bethune was given a two-year suspended sentence. In addition, he was banned from Japan for five years. Bethune was deported to New Zealand on July 9.
Bethune held a press conference upon returning to New Zealand. He told reporters: “My trial in Japan represents a miscarriage in justice. Not because I stood before that court, but because the captain of the Shōnan Maru 2 did not.” He also called the New Zealand Government a “lap dog” for its lack of support.

A anti-whaling activist from New Zealand who was handed a suspended sentence for obstructing the annual Japanese whale hunt has vowed to continue his crusade.
Peter Bethune was deported from Japan after receiving a suspended two-year sentence for obstructing Japanese whaling in the Antarctic Ocean.
Speaking on his return home, Bethune said he would never give up his fight.
But the 45-year-old said he was unsure if he would return to Antarctic waters.
Bethune was detained aboard a Japanese whaler in the middle of the Antarctic Ocean in February after clambering aboard. He was arrested when the vessel returned to Japan.
The former member of the conservation group Sea Shepherd was escorted by immigration officers onto an Air New Zealand flight bound for Auckland on Friday.
Throwing stink bombs
Speaking in the city on Saturday, Bethune said that he was ready for a coffee.
“I want to go to a coffee shop,” he told the NZ Herald newspaper.
“In prison, there’s nothing to do. You are stuck in a cell 23-and-a-half hours a day and I have been looking forward to going to a coffee shop and having a coffee and a muffin.”
AFP news agency reported that Bethune said he would never give up his fight to stop Japanese whaling.
The activist, who spent four months in a Tokyo jail, had pleaded guilty to four out of five charges but had denied assault.
He had admitted charges of trespassing, vandalism, possession of a knife and obstructing business.
Bethune was also found guilty of assault, by throwing stink bombs made of butyric acid – rancid butter – at whalers.
He was part of the Sea Shepherd anti-whaling group, which tries each year to block Japan’s annual hunt.
He was the captain of the Ady Gil, a speed boat split in two during a clash with the whalers on 6 January.
Earlier, he had told his trial that he had wanted to confront the Japanese ship’s captain and hand him a $3 million bill for the destruction of the vessel.
Large numbers of police officers were on duty outside the court in Tokyo where the verdict was delivered on Wednesday.
Japan abandoned commercial whaling in 1986 after agreeing to a global moratorium.
But it says that whaling is part of its culture and catches hundreds of whales each year as part of what it calls a scientific research programme.

Whale Warrior Captain Pete Bethune Free to Return HomeOn January 6, 2010, Captain Hiroyuki Komura of the illegal Japanese whaling vessel the Shonan Maru #2 deliberately rammed and destroyed Sea Shepherd Conservation Society’s vessel, the Ady Gil. Captain Komura almost killed six Sea Shepherd volunteer crewmembers and did not respond to the Ady Gil’s mayday distress signal. Japanese authorities refused to cooperate in investigations and declined requests by Australian and New Zealand maritime authorities to question Captain Komura. Instead, Captain Peter Bethune, the man who Captain Komura almost killed and whose ship was destroyed, was taken back to Japan literally as a prisoner of war abducted from the waters of the Australian Antarctic Territory. Captain Bethune was incarcerated for boarding the ship that had rammed and destroyed his ship, when he had every right to board that vessel to confront Captain Komura face-to-face for his crimes. Captain Komura should have been the man on trial. He was not, because in the waters of the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary, might—rather than the law—makes right, and Captain Bethune was taken back to Japan to be made an example of and persecuted for defending the whales. The verdict of the Japanese court was always to be “guilty.” Sea Shepherd was never under any illusion that Captain Bethune would be given a fair trial. In court, there was no discussion of the reason why Captain Bethune boarded the Shonan Maru #2, and Captain Komura was not called as a witness; in short, the court never allowed any evidence of the Ady Gil’s destruction to be heard. Sea Shepherd spent in excess of half a million U.S. dollars on Captain Bethune’s defense, not because we believed he would be acquitted, but in an attempt to mitigate his sentence. Captain Bethune was facing up to fifteen years in prison. He was sentenced to two years and he will be deported back to New Zealand on July 9th with his sentence suspended. Captain Bethune’s mission was successful. His efforts helped save the lives of 528 whales. He was able to take one of the harpoon vessels off the hunt when it was forced to return him to Japan. Most importantly, he exposed the brutality and illegality of the Japanese whaling fleet to the world. When you’re willing to risk your life to save the whales, five months as a Japanese prisoner is a good trade-off for the lives saved. Captain Bethune is a hero to the Save the Whales movement and he will be welcomed home to New Zealand as a national hero for having the courage to do what his government was fearful of doing—defending whales from the Japanese poachers in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. Global support for Captain Bethune and negative publicity about Japan’s whaling program has led to this success. With Captain Bethune, the Japanese government was well aware that each day it held him would be a day that would generate protest against its abominable whale slaughter. This fact, coupled with protests over the showing of the Academy Award winning film “The Cove,” has helped to make the whale and dolphin slaughter the most embarrassing foreign affairs issue currently scandalizing the Japanese government. The Japanese court acknowledged that Captain Bethune never intended to hurt anyone and was operating under his conviction to save whales from illegal whaling. The truth is that Japan wants Captain Bethune out of Japan and with the sentence suspended they can quickly send him home. Sea Shepherd is proud of Captain Bethune’s achievements and satisfied with the results of this ridiculous trial that saw a man incarcerated for saving the lives of whales, yet ignored the crimes of a Japanese poacher who sank a ship and almost killed six conservationists. Captain Bethune is free, and that is what matters. Sea Shepherd is free to return to the Southern Ocean again to defend the whales, and we intend to be even more effective next season than during our last highly effective season. Animal Planet announced it has given the green light for a new “Whale Wars” one-hour special series episode featuring Captain Pete Bethune of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.
During the two-hour season finale, viewers’ last glimpse of eco-pirate and anti-whaling activist Bethune will be when he is taken into custody by Japanese authorities and brought to Tokyo, where he had been held on charges of trespassing, obstructing the passage of a vessel, carrying a knife and damaging property.
According to Animal Planet, Bethune, whose story arc has captivated audiences this season as his beloved vessel the Ady Gil collided with the Shonan Maru 2 and sank into the bottom of the Southern Ocean, spent months in custody but was released on July 9, 2010 and returned home to New Zealand.
The special is slated to air following the season finale of BLOOD DOLPHINS on Friday, September 17 at 10 PM (ET/PT).
The exclusive one-hour special episode features Bethune recalls his ordeal on board the ship that held him for nearly a month and subsequently the three months he was detained in Japan.
How was he treated during his detention? What went through his mind during that harrowing time? Born in Sweden and raised in the United States, Peter, 25, joined the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society as soon as he was old enough to submit an application.
A fervent advocate for the rights of animals, Peter believes that in their capacity to suffer, animals are our equals. Helicopter Pilot and Aviation Director, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society
American Chris Aultman, 40, of Long Beach, California, is a dedicated environmental conservationist and commercial helicopter pilot living in the United States. Prior to joining the Sea Shepherd team, Aultman served for six years in the United States Marine Corps as a helicopter avionics technician. During this period Chris spent 13 months at sea and became a veteran of the Gulf War.
Aultman’s first experience with the destruction of the world’s oceans was seeing the disastrous effects of the millions of barrels of oil dumped into the Persian Gulf during that war. This and many other experiences caused Chris to start to see the world for what it really was, and nothing was ever the same again.
Many years later, Chris met the founder of Ocean Defenders Alliance, who was tabling for Sea Shepherd Conservation Society at a local scuba show. Already a commercial helicopter pilot and flight instructor, Chris asked if Sea Shepherd ever needed helicopter pilots. This proved to be a very ironic question since it was his involvement with Ocean Defenders Alliance that brought him to meet Captain Paul Watson and become the helicopter pilot for Sea Shepherd.
Chris has flown during the last four Antarctic Whale Defense campaigns and is ready to return to the world’s oceans for the defense and conservation and marine wildlife.

We recently reported that Michelle Rodriguez will be joining Captain Paul Watson and the Sea Shepherd on their next voyage to the Antarctic. Now Rodriguez has revealed that she will follow a vegan diet while on the ship.
Rodriguez explained, “I’m not (a vegetarian) but I will have to be because on the ship, it’s a vegan ship – you can’t be a hypocrite; you can’t be sitting there trying to save animals and then killing them. That’s just weird.”
The Avatar actress admits that she is inspired by Captain Watson and acknowledges the dangers involved.
“I have a tendency not to think before I do things, which you know what, it really adds a little spice to life – because if you thought too much about things before you do them, you’d never do them,” explained Rodriguez.

In 2005, Shannon heard Paul Watson speak at the Annual Animal Rights Conference in Los Angeles. She understood immediately that his was a cause worth being involved in. She returned from the summer conference, contacted the Sea Shepherd, and was accepted as a volunteer for the Antarctic campaign of 2006-2007.
Shannon’s tenacious personality and rock-solid belief system have perpetuated her understanding of boundaries, limits and the power of the human spirit. She credits Watson with helping her to understand the power of dedication and fight. During her journey with the Sea Shepherd, she’s developed confidence in her ability to navigate the sea and whip up delicious vegan fare, all while fighting for the animals who are helpless to defend themselves.
While Shannon battles on the rocky seas, she relies on the kindred spirit of her sister to care for her best buddy Jack, her beloved rescue dog back home. Shannon’s non-profit organization FLEA (Friends of Life, Environment, and Animals) was granted charitable status in Canada in 2008, fueling her passion for the environment and shaping a plan for her future endeavors. Her most passionate goal is to put an end to whaling in the Antarctic Sanctuary once and for all.

Fiona is living her ultimate dream by being able to work full time representing animals and their rights around the world. This year she was a crew member onboard the Bob Barker as part of the Sea Shepherd’s Operation Waltzing Matilda Whale Defense Campaign 2009-2010 in Antarctica.
A Sydney, Australia, girl, Fiona, 32, grew up by the sea and the bush with a natural love of everything wild.
Founder of Excellence in World Zoos, she was able to combine her love of animals with her two degrees of Economics and Property. Her organization instigates redevelopment of poor enclosures in developing countries. Her first project was the Australian Zone of the Beijing Zoo in time for the Olympics.
Fiona has worked as a property consultant for eight years, but always weaved in volunteering with animals throughout this time. She spent six months volunteering in Africa and America in wildlife rehabilitation, volunteered in three zoos and is now head of the youth committee for the Foundation for the National Parks and Wildlife in New South Wales.
With a human population predicted to double to 12 billion, Fiona believes there is a huge amount of work to be done in her life to prevent the extinction of many species of wildlife.

Growing up in South Africa, Amber Paarman noticed injustice at an early age and saw striking parallels between the exploitation of human beings and animals. Raised as a vegetarian, she also recognized that change only comes about by taking action. Rather than turning her back on the abandoned and abused animals in South Africa, Amber opened up her home to many dogs, cats, horses and birds. But it took Sea Shepherd arriving in Cape Town after the 2005 Antarctic Whale Defense Campaign for Amber to take her passion for animals to a global level.
Since then, she has pulled up long lines in the Galapagos, opposed sealing in Canada, and tackled whalers in the Antarctic. Amber can be found in the galley combining her love for animals with her love of food. With health, nutrition, and cruelty-free as her main ingredients, Amber keeps the Bob Barker crew well-fed and ready for action.
Between Sea Shepherd campaigns, Amber actively campaigns against vivisection, fur farming, and fox hunting around the world, and finds the time to expose animal abuse wherever she goes. For Amber, being an animal rights activist is a full-time job. Not to lose sight of what she is fighting for, Amber also always finds time to help animals directly by volunteering at animal shelters and by teaching people about the environmental impacts of a meat-based diet.
Amber hopes that by fighting for whales and cooking vegan food, she is able to motivate people to reassess the way that other animals are seen as food as well.

Growing up in Atlanta, Andrea’s passion for protecting animals first began on land. Working with Sea Shepherd in 2005 to save baby harp seals, she developed a profound desire to protect marine life.
This past year, while on sabbatical from her job as a public defender in Brooklyn, she has been volunteering with Sea Shepherd. She spent the summer investigating environmental crimes in the Galapagos Islands and then joined the Bob Barker on its maiden voyage in Africa.
Driven by a desire to save lives – whether whales, seals or humans – Andrea is devoted to protecting all of Earth’s inhabitants. Besides working with Sea Shepherd, she saved lives in a different capacity – in the courtroom. Providing help to those who could not afford a lawyer, she spent four years as a public defender for the Legal Aid Society of New York City. She is currently co-founding the Galapagos’s first animal hospital, Darwin Animal Doctors.

I spent my six and a half years in the Navy as a surface warfare officer, where I was assigned to a marine transport ship in San Diego, California, and a frigate out of Seattle, Washington. On both of those vessels, I was required to be a small-boat officer, which made me very familiar with Sea Shepherd’s Delta and Gemini launching, recovery, and general small-boat operations. I’ve spent countless hours in a Navy small boat. I was also required to qualify as an officer of the watch, so I had experience with ship maneuvering (but not through ice!), navigation, rules of the road, helicopter operations, radars, radio communication, and everything else that comes along with being on the bridge of a 300- to 500-foot ship. As a bonus, I was also a helicopter control officer on the frigate, ensuring the safety of a helicopter when launching and recovering.
What was the most rewarding part of your post with Sea Shepherd?
I would say being able to utilize my skills in an appropriate arena—the ocean—and feeling useful. The ultimate for an animal activist is to go on campaign and be in the action and feel the wind and sea spray and life as opposed to being in an office, which, of course, is important as well.
What was one of the most difficult things about fighting against whalers?
When we were out in the Southern Ocean, it was four against one. The harpoon ships are so fast and maneuverable (they could do a 180 in their own wake!) and easily did circles around us. It made it difficult to ever feel as though we had the upper hand, and we often felt a bit like a tin can. It would be amazing if we were no longer outnumbered.
It was very difficult to decide where to focus my efforts, but I thought Sea Shepherd was the perfect place since I have skills for ship-handling, guts for action, and a heart for humanity.
Whale Wars can be a pretty intense show. Have you ever had a moment where you thought you couldn’t keep going? What made you persevere?
There was never a moment when I thought I couldn’t keep going. All the action was extremely intense with lots of adrenaline going through everyone’s blood. The action became very addicting, and when we had to leave the whaling fleet, it was very, very disappointing. I was not ready to leave. We definitely need more ships out there.
Now for the question on everyone’s mind: How has being named PETA’s Sexiest Naval Woman positively affected your life?
It’s a very fun title to have, and who wouldn’t be honored to have the title of PETA’s Sexiest Naval Woman? I thought there might only be two vegetarians out there to compete with, but what a wonderful surprise to hear that there were so many! I’m looking forward to wearing my winning T-shirt and sparking some interesting conversations with animal lovers, as well as educating those who want to debate the issues.
Can we look forward to a third season of the show?
Oh, yes. There is a third season. Sea Shepherd has just merged with Earthrace, a round-the-world, record-breaking trimaran, so I suspect that the tactics next year are going to be completely different. Anything could happen when you bring a boat that looks like a spaceship down to the Southern Ocean!
Will you be on deck again?
Oh, I got so addicted to Sea Shepherd’s campaigns that I want to go on all of them! Before the merge, I met Earthrace in New Zealand and loved the boat, so I will be trying out to crew on it. With Sea Shepherd Conservation Society’s new popularity, there are so many new, interesting, skilled, and keen volunteers, so I’m not sure if I will be selected, but my fingers are crossed!

Locky MacLean from “Whale Wars,” whose full name is Lockhart MacLean, is the First Officer on the Steve Irwin vessel in the Animal Planet reality docu-drama.
Round-the-world sailor and environmentalist, Locky (“Whale Wars”) was born in France, grew up on the west coast of Canada and went to the University of California at Santa Barbara. Locky MacLean has lived on a solar-and-wind-powered sailboat for the last 10 years, sailing to over 25 countries on four continents, crossing the world’s oceans. These voyages have led Locky (“Whale Wars”) to coral islands in the Pacific, which are threatened by climate change; forests in New Guinea and Indonesia being cleared for palm oil; and the war-torn coasts of Sri Lanka, Yemen and Sudan.
Originally involved with Sea Shepherd 10 years ago on board the Ocean Warrior during the SOS Sea Turtle Campaign and Long-lining Campaign in the Caribbean, Central America and Galapagos, Locky MacLean has worked for Greenpeace Asia-Pacific and Greenpeace International on board the ships Rainbow Warrior II and Esperanza in Europe, Australia and Asia. However, Locky (“Whale Wars”) has returned to “the hardest working and most effective NGO” in the world (Sea Shepherd), and is most happy being back and part of a cause he believes in.
Locky MacLean is passionate about conserving the world’s biodiversity, and, with his wife Barbara, a journalist and photographer from Brazil, is currently at the helm of the Sea Shepherd vessel Steve Irwin en route to the Mediterranean to protect the endangered bluefin tuna.

After working eight years for the Dutch police force specializing in organized environmental crime, Laurens, 29, realized there was an area of the world where no authority is upholding international conservation laws: our oceans. After little research, Laurens discovered the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society as the only organization willing to stand up against the evil powers committing the atrocities that destroy our Blue Planet.
With more then 70 percent of our oxygen coming from the oceans, healthy oceans are vital for life on Earth. Humanity has to do whatever it takes to protect the great waters. For Laurens “doing whatever it takes” meant giving up his job as a crime investigator, selling his belongings and moving to Australia to join the Steve Irwin crew for the 2007/08 campaign: Operation Migaloo. The campaign saved over 500 whales. But unfortunately whaling wasn’t shut down forever.
Laurens returned for the 2008/09 campaign: Operation Musashi as the Japanese whalers returned to Antarctica to slaughter the gentle giants once more, and again in 09/10 for Operation Waltzing Matilda. This time, he was on the Ady Gil crew before it was destroyed, and then the Bob Barker briefly as the Ady Gil crew transferred over before returning to shore. The former crime investigator decided to rejoin the Sea Shepherd crew to help shut down one of the most barbaric crimes against life the world has ever seen: the slaughter of whales in a Whale Sanctuary.
In between campaigns, Laurens works as a freelance writer and sport instructor.

Benjamin Potts
Ben’s father worked for the National Parks and Wildlife Service. He used to bring home animals that he had seized from smugglers and trappers. These animals would either be taken to a wildlife refuge for rehabilitation or, if they were local, released back into the bush. These animals gave Ben the opportunity to form friendships and an appreciation of Australia’s unique and amazing wild citizens and he considers these creatures to be part of his extended family.
After school, Ben spent more time in the bush as an infantry soldier in the Australian Army followed by a number of jobs ranging from outdoor guide to tree planter, traveling throughout eastern Australia from the tropics to the snowy high country. In Tasmania, he witnessed first-hand the destruction of the last remaining stands of Australia’s old growth forests which contain some of the oldest and tallest trees in the world. The animals in these forests lose their homes when the forest is cleared for monoculture plantations. Seeing his country and its inhabitants destroyed for a quick buck made him extremely distressed and angry, and he vowed to defend it in the future.
This decision led him to volunteer with Sea Shepherd to defend the great whales. He had seen documentaries featuring Sea Shepherd, and he wanted to be involved in an organization which is on the front-line of defending threatened species and attempting to halt man’s wholesale destruction of the natural world. He is extremely proud and felt privileged to have been a crew member in the lead up to and during the 2008 campaign which was a pivotal experience in his life and gave him the confidence and drive to fight for life on this planet.
Ben plans to further his education in the environment by studying conservation biology and ecology as well as continuing to be involved with Sea Shepherd and local direct action environment group, Still Wild Still Threatened.

Laura was born on November 16, 1983, in the small fishing village of Dorset in Weymouth, England. Growing up traveling among England, Bermuda, India and Australia, she developed a huge love of the oceans, the forests, and life on Earth. She spent much of her childhood caring for injured and abused animals and developed a deep concern for the welfare of all wildlife.
Angered, frustrated and determined to make a difference in the world, Laura set out to learn how she could be most effective, and in January 2005, she turned that anger into action by becoming a Sea Shepherd crew member.
While living in Bermuda and working for the fashion industry (of all things!), she spotted the Farley Mowat (one of Sea Shepherd’s ships), where it was preparing to sail for Canada to defend the baby harp seals. After a short tour on board, the deeply moved aspiring activist could not resist and asked the Captain when the ship was leaving. “Tomorrow morning,” he replied. She raced home, packed a bag, and called her boss to beg for four weeks of holiday leave. That was four years ago, and she has never looked back! Her passion, determination, and resolve to end the slaughter of innocent marine life grow every day.
In her four and a half years as a Sea Shepherd crew member, she has experienced collisions with illegal whaling vessels, pulled in miles of longline, and has had the pleasure of freeing sharks, turtles, and manta rays from the grasp of the longline’s deadly hooks. She has been physically attacked by poachers and has been arrested on the ice floes protecting baby harp seals, but her commitment is long from over. Laura will not stop until the war for the Earth is won.

LUKE VAN HORN
Communications Officer, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society
Born in the United States, Luke was raised on a small dairy farm in southern Michigan. He attributes his strong work ethic and self-reliance to growing up in this environment.
Luke went on to explore the western United States, spending several years in the Rocky Mountains and most recently on the West Coast. It was during this time that he developed a deep appreciation for the natural world and realized the importance to protect it.
In recent years, Luke has become increasingly concerned that our impact on the environment is reaching a tipping point. He felt the best way to make a personal impact was to join Sea Shepherd in the southern ocean defending a mammal both cherished and decimated by humans.
When he’s not on campaign, Luke works as a software engineer. In his free time, he enjoys trail running, sailing and hiking. He currently lives in Washington state.

Ship engineer Larry Routledge stands in the cabin as he prepares the new Earthrace stealth high-tech anti-whaling powerboat brought by the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society for its imminent deployment for Perth and then the Southern Ocean, on November 5, 2009 in Auckland, New Zealand. The 24-metre trimaran has paint which deflects radar waves, so can approach Japanese whaling vessels almost unseen. It will join the Society’s ship Steve Irwin on a three-month voyage protesting against the Japanese whaling program, leaving Perth on December 7.

Hello all!
We made our way down to Antarctica on the Steve Irwin over the last two weeks, after a farewell party in Perth that included Bindi Irwin singing a song about friendship with whales. I had to push my fashionable cynicism aside – it was lovely and afterwards she and her brother did a great job of being normal kids, quietly trailing close behind their Mum.
Alarming evidence of climate change when we saw an iceberg at 47 degrees south… usually they don’t appear til the fifties at least.
We’ve been tailed since we left Australian waters by a Japanese harpoon “spy” vessel keeping track of our movements. There have been with a few spectacular run-ins on the high seas and then in the ice. A couple of days ago, as we neared the continent we were slowed in an ice field. Their ship, the Shonan Maru 2, made multiple runs at the side of our vessel, all the while announcing “I am turning. Keep clear”. It was pretty outrageous. As was their aiming an acoustic weapon at our helicopter pilot when he flew over them! Weapons are illegal in Antarctic waters and interfering with a pilot is prohibited under international aviation treaties to which Japan and Australia are signatories. As we know: not necessarily a dererrent to the whaling fleet.
We sought assistance from the French Antarctic base at Durmont D’Urville and spent a couple of days in their waters. Our first officer helicoptered over to the base for a meeting. The French were supportive, providing an official letter offering their support for our mission and that we could take shelter from the whaling vessel with their ice breaker “La Astrolabe”. (And I believe from photographic evidence they may have given our helicopter pilot and first officer some great cheese though they haven’t told us vegan crew!).
For the last two days we’ve been anchored in Commonwealth Bay, for tactical reasons (can’t discuss!)- which has given us a chance to drill up and do some amazing once in a lifetime activist-tourism.
After the “penguin swim” – jumping off the side of the ship into the freezing antarctic waters, no wet suit (people were very amused when I took the defibrillator out on deck in case of long QT syndrome) – we went in our delta boat onto the Antarctic continent, to visit the Australian Antarctic explorer Mawson’s hut.
It was absolutely magical. The weather was perfect: a couple of degrees above zero, perfectly lit, no wind. Every vista of a penguins, ice, ocean, icebergs, grey granite rocks, penguins and seals under a bright but moody sky looked like a professional photograph; I’m sure a set designer couldn’t create a more remarkable place! (No offence meant to any scenic painters in my audience 😉
There are literally thousands of Adelie penguins here and they are just gorgeous. They swim and dive around the boat, doing mega-quick jumps above the water surface like dolphins. And cause great hilarity when they hop vertically out of the water and land upright on the ice (or once, in our small boat!).
There was small colony of huge Waddel seals was lying around on the ice, turning lazily to size us up before settling back to sleep like cats. Neither seals or penguins were particularly bothered by our presence – in fact groups of the Adelies would run up to stare at us, or follow us around curiously. One of our crew, Michael, a professional nature photographer (his amazing frog pictures can be found at www.itsawildlife.com) was in heaven.
We walked up to the penguin rookery overlooking spectacular ice cliffs with a view of Commonwealth Bay, then took tours of Mawson’s hut with the conservators and enjoyed the hospitality of the 10 base members. Doctor:patient ratios were pretty favorable: they have two doctors on their expedition team – one is also a qualified engineer (!), the other the expedition leader, and they compare constructing their bases to orthopaedic surgery.
Personally I was really excited to see one of the world’s longest-situated tidal sensors pulled out of the water by the guys from the base with some of our divers. The data it contains is important for measuring sea level rise caused by global warming. Matt style, I now have a climate change holiday snap to add to my climate change talk!
Soon we’ll be in the thick of the campaign again. I’ll be thinking of you all over the next few weeks and would love to hear news from home – especially some post-Copenhagen updates (though I’m afraid they might be depressing), and especially if the Liberal party is tearing themselves apart. Looking forward to sharing some stories and photos when I arrive home!

SIMON AVERY
Bosun’s Mate and Boat Driver, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society
Born in Britain and resident of the United States, Simon, 44, joined the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society as a deckhand aboard their flagship, The Steve Irwinin 2008. During the Operation Musashi Antarctic Campaign, one of Simon’s principal roles was small boats driver in operations against the Japanese whaling fleet.
Simon’s boat-driving skills were honed over the previous decade while serving as a land steward on some of the wildest and most spectacular islands off the coast of Britain. A conservation biologist with more than 13 years experience of protecting threatened marine wildlife, Simon feels that his instinctive passion for wildlife conservation naturally led him to volunteer for an organization that is at the vanguard of the struggle to end the savage pillaging of the world’s oceans by the combined forces of greed and ignorance.
When not volunteering with Sea Shepherd, Simon works as a biologist, working to protect seabirds and other wildlife for a range of organizations, both in Britain and the United States.

ARNE FEUERHAHN
Deckhand, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society
Arne grew up in northern Germany and has always had a close connection to the sea – both as a small boy exploring the shores of the North Sea and later as a diver down in the deep.
Before his time as volunteer crewmember with Sea Shepherd, Arne was an unemployed vegan, a so-called “dumpster diver” in the backyards of Berlin. At some point, he decided to change his life and try to give those who cannot defend themselves a voice. So, with a little motivation, he sent in a crew application and eight months later found himself chasing the Japanese whaling fleet in the defense of the whales with Sea Shepherd for Operation Musashi.
Arne will start his nautical studies this summer to gain more knowledge about ships and seafaring. In a few years, he hopes to set up a new organization of his own, which will work hand-in-hand with Sea Shepherd and other conservation groups to protect life in our oceans.

Chad Halstead, 25, was born and raised in Philadelphia. Chad is a long-time animal rights activist, ethical vegan and adventure seeker, who believes that only our actions of today will make the difference in our world tomorrow. As a crewmember on the deck department and driver of the Delta (small boat), he had joined Sea Shepherd to do his part in resistance against the common destruction of this world’s lands and oceans. With an interest in Arctic travel and life at sea, he was more than comfortable spending months in the Southern Ocean defending whales.
When not on the ship, Chad is surfing, painting, enjoying life with friends and looking forward to the upcoming campaigns with hopes to influence changes not only in the oceans, but the way people consume and dispose of their resources on land as well. He believes that oceans, rivers, lakes, marshlands, beaches and forests are all interconnected, and unless people find ways to reduce their impact on the environment, everything will soon fail. Born and raised in Adelaide, South Australia, Andrew now resides in Hobart, Tasmania.
A Ph.D. candidate, qualitative researcher, and tutor in Information Systems (i.e. a professional student), Andrew has a wide variety of academic interests covering strategic decision-making and governance within NGOs; not-for-profits and activist groups; online activist communities; and corporate governance and corporate social responsibility.
Also a long-time environmental, political, and social activist, Andrew has experience spanning from time spent on the frontline of direct actions (blockades, occupations, protests, rallies etc.) right through to roles of a more strategic, organizational and/or administrative capacity (e.g. president of a student union). At all times and in all capacities, Andrew is always willing to put himself physically on the line for his beliefs.
A student of martial arts from a young age, Andrew has grown up believing and adhering to the principles of Bushido (the way of the warrior) and the maxim penned by Miyamoto Musashi of “Bun Bu Itchi” or, roughly translated, pen and sword in accord (words and actions are one).
Outside of work, Andrew is a veteran boarder (snow, skate and wake), coffee addict, music lover, vegetarian/vegan (for over 20 years), chronic procrastinator, and quixotic daydreamer extraordinaire.
This was his first campaign with Sea Shepherd. Prior to Operation Musashi, Andrew and his current wife, Molly, spent six months on board The Steve Irwin readying it for its campaign.
He hopes to come back for future campaigns with Sea Shepherd.

Deckhand, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society
Born in Adelaide, South Australia, Molly is an anthropologist who completed her honor’s thesis on environmentally sustainable communities in Australia. Frustrated with the inaction of academia, she left her hometown to pursue her own three-year study of eco-communities. She filmed as she went in the hopes of creating a documentary that would encourage and give direction to fellow eco-panicked city dwellers.
Molly first heard of Sea Shepherd when she was locked onto a log loader in an anti-old growth logging action alongside a Sea Shepherd deckhand. During the 36 hours they were locked together, he explained that a Sea Shepherd campaign was 95% grunt work and 5% glory; when you find the fleet and it starts running, whaling ends, and it makes everything worthwhile. Molly saw a tangible way to create positive change, and she was sold.
Ending whaling is important to Molly as she sees it as a stepping stone in the greater environmental struggle. Living oceans are often overlooked in the environmental movement, but they are vital. Oceans absorb 80% of the world’s carbon and contain the majority of its species. To want to protect something, your heart must go out to it, so for Molly, the fight to save the oceans starts with the whales. They are a symbol of the living ocean, which is dying in our time. Molly believes if we can’t save the whales then we can’t save the oceans, and if we can’t save the oceans then we can’t save ourselves.
“I think we are at that point in human history where we are required to quit our day jobs. Many people serve the environment part time whilst at the same time working to save money for their future, but without the environment and planet to live on, there is no future. I wish everyone would just stop right now and volunteer his/her life to saving the environment: Find an organization you like, and if you can’t find one, form your own organization. The best part is there is nothing to lose because money won’t be the currency of the future; adaptability, life experience and practical skills will be wealth. The feeling of fighting for the Earth is fantastic. It is what living really feels like. I wish every single person could experience that feeling,” says Molly.
Between bouts of grassroots activism, Molly enjoys making ethnographic documentaries and working as a circus trainer in Hobart, Tasmania. In her spare time she loves snowboarding, roller derby, live music, the cinema as well as doing laps at the pool, exploring the library, trading vintage bargains, searching for the best coffee in town, traveling, and being married to the most gorgeous man in the world (Andrew Perry).

The baby sea lion is stuck in a moment he can’t get out of.
As he stares into the eyes of a nine-metre orca on the remote shores of an Argentinian beach, he has no idea what is about to happen.
He is only four weeks old, and yet to develop the skills that alert him to this kind of danger.
A moment later, the little one is gone – lost in the jaws of the huge mammal, known as Mel.
And a few metres away, Chantal Henderson is perched quietly, as she captures the moment on her camera.
The orca she is photographing is one of a group of 22, seven of which have learnt how to intentionally strand themselves on the pebble beaches of Peninsula Valdez to hunt baby sea lions from the shore.
The baby sea lion is just one of many who will become a meal during the orca season from February to April, and the action is played out in much the same way as in a David Attenborough documentary Chantal saw as a child.
“I was quite young when I saw it and I always had it in the back of my mind that I would go there,” she said.
In the last few years, the Cotton Tree local has been to Argentina nine times as part of her work with Punta Norte Orca Research, a non-profit organisation she helped to create in 2004.

She went back there this orca season to continue to document the lives of the animals she has come to know so well.
“It’s pretty amazing. The orcas are quite incredible animals. It’s quite a rush to be within arm’s reach,” she says.
“There’s a male that’s 20 to 25 years old. He should be hunting but he sits back all the time.
“Jazmin’s a really strong female leader. She’s always quite curious about what we’re doing. She lifts her eye up all the time to check us out.”
Chantal says she is able to identify the whales based on their scars, fin shape and social behaviour.
“They tend to group with the same ones all the time,” she says.
“You know when they’re about to hunt because the baby seals will just be playing and quite oblivious to the orca there.
“Then they get their tails thrusting and come in at a hundred miles an hour to the shore. Not many people would like to see it, actually.”
Her return trip to Argentina was the latest in a string of adventures for Chantal, who recently boarded the Sea Shepherd ship named after Steve Irwin.
The Coast-based chiropractor spent December and January chasing Japanese whalers in the Southern Ocean, while working as the designated photographer on the ship.
She was able to keep her friends and family updated regularly via email, as she captured moments that made world headlines, such as when two of the protesters were taken hostage by the Japanese whalers.
Chantal also became a headline herself, after she was flung into the freezing cold Antarctic waters. She was on the smaller Zodiac, which was being lowered into the water from the main ship when the accident happened.
Her boyfriend, David Jennings, was the driver of the Zodiac, but jokingly insists the accident was not his fault.
“It was the guy holding the bower lines,” he adds.
The pair met the day before the ship was due to depart from Melbourne, but both insist that finding love had been the last thing on their minds at the time.
Like Chantal, the American says he has wonderful memories of his time working as a “good pirate” in the Southern Ocean.
“I was looking for another adventure and I really love Antarctica,” he says.
“It’s beautiful – really foreign. It’s almost like you don’t belong there.
“It’s so simple and so harsh… The colours are reduced to just the whites, blues, greys and blacks.”
Chantal is planning an exhibition of her photographs on the Coast in June, to raise money for the Sea Shepherd.

1) Prior to be working on ships of Sea Shepherd , you spent twenty years working on commercial vessels , right? What’s the big difference now of working for an environmental organization ?
Erwin Vermeulen: On commercial ships you feel like a job with all the rules, and I use now all aware of the work I have done all these years in the organization. The big difference here is that everyone works together, everyone is here with a purpose. Everyone comes from a different reality and history, but these people are on board with the same goal. Already in commercial vessels , there are all the work for the career they want to build and is placed first.
In recent months I am not really be “working” , I am here since August 2009. The truth is that I ‘ve been feeling that I have made a difference by being involved with the Sea Shepherd , so do not consider it a job. For me no matter how long I’m on board or how much time I spend at sea, being here makes me happy.
2) And basically what happened to you? After twenty years, suddenly you had a “click” and decided to do something for the planet? After being on board commercial ships and go to work for Sea Shepherd realities are so different …
Erwin Vermeulen : I separated from my girlfriend last year and this time I felt it was the right time for some changes in my work and my life. The work on commercial ships was basically between a port and another Sea Shepherd as well as being a better working environment , we are always in better places and more attractive terms.
3) This was his first Sea Shepherd campaign in Antarctica. How do you feel after this experience?
Erwin Vermeulen : Paul has been interviewed since he started his expeditions in protection to whales in Antarctica and he recently said that ” Waltzing Matilda ” was undoubtedly the most effective of all campaign ever conducted by Sea Shepherd. The permanent organization was to record the time behind the whale , I would say the Nisshin Maru. The time that they lost no whaling was amazing and of course they lost enough money on it this year. Even heard of a Japanese spokesman that they are no longer interested in hunting whales, but keep the members of Sea Shepherd ” occupied. ” What I want to say that the world is upside down!
4) And what is your position on whaling ? You always worried about the possible extinction of species and this awareness has just come in time working with Sea Shepherd?
Erwin Vermeulen: I personally have always been interested in marine animals , even during my previous work on ships and my travels . I always loved looking at the beauty of nature, such as dolphin watching and surfing on the bow of the ship or to see the breath of a whale ” humpback “, it is virtually impossible not to admire and love all these animals when you see them in their habitat.
5 ) What do you miss the ” outside world ” or civilization , since you spend most of the time shipped ?
Erwin Vermeulen : I ‘m already accustomed to life at sea, but the little things that I like to do when I get “land” is smoking a cigarette, a beer and walk more than two hundred feet up and down.
6 ) What do you think could be improved in the Sea Shepherd to make the next campaign even more effective in Antarctica?
Erwin Vermeulen: Every campaign depends on the speed in which we find the whalers , which involves all electronics that can give us that information. I believe there is much that needs to be improvised or improved for the next campaign , but if we could get another ship as Ady Gil, who can go pretty fast, might make a difference to find the whalers and stop them continue with their actions as soon as possible . The Nisshin Maru is a very big ship , when the Steve Irwin and Bob Barker are very small , so I think if we had a ship larger and faster will be a completely different story for the next campaign .

I have extensive small boat open ocean experience. 10 years ago, I became a grammar school teacher.When I told my students how the Japanese whaling fleet intends to come down to Antarctica to slaughter 950 whales, they let out this collective gasp. I didn’t need to explain about treaties, endangered species, research quotas, or sanctuaries. The children knew in their heart that killing whales was wrong. It was at that point that this campaign took on a new meaning for me.I promised my students that I would go down to Antarctica with Sea Shepherd and do everything possible to make sure that they and all children grow up in a world where whales are cherished and protected not hunted down and slaughtered. I intend to keep that promise.Three days ago we engaged the Nisshin Maru. As we pulled up behind the factory ship, three harpoon ships and the security ship, the Shonan Maru, surrounded us from behind. They then started circling us like a pack of wolves. They would pass as close as 50 meters alongside then cut dangerously close across our bow.When the Yushin Maru 3 came up within 40 meters that was close enough. TheYushin Maru 3 then veered right into our side. I yelled for the deck crew to get down as you could hear metal screeching and our ship heeled over.A quick survey of our vessel revealed a one-meter gash just above the waterline. Teen sailor Laura Dekker says she will leave the Netherlands on Wednesday in her quest to become the youngest to circumnavigate the globe alone. But it won’t yet be the first leg of the 14-year-old’s solo voyage.
Laura said on her blog Saturday she will sail with her father to Portugal, and will begin her round-the-world venture from there later. She said she did not know when that would be.
Laura won a prolonged battle last Tuesday when a court released her from the guardianship of Dutch child protection agencies that had blocked her attempts to leave last year when she was still 13. The authorities said being alone and absent from school for so long would be harmful for her education and psychological development.
On her blog, Laura posted a picture of the schoolbooks she is taking, packed snugly in a wooden rack.
She planned to set out at 9 a.m. (0700GMT) in her 38-foot (11.5-meter) yacht Guppy from the southern Dutch harbor of Den Osse with her father Dick Dekker, who has supported Laura’s ambitions to enter the record book as the world’s youngest round-the-world sailor.
The family court in nearby Middelburg ruled that Laura’s preparations appeared adequate and it was up to her parents to decide whether to let her make the attempt. Her mother, Babs Mueller, who is separated from her father, recently withdrew her opposition.
“It’s great that I can now officially say it will happen on Wednesday,” she wrote.
In an earlier blog posting, Laura wrote that she and her father would sail together to Portugal to make final adjustments and safety checks aboard the red twin-masted ketch.
Laura, who was born on a yacht off the coast of New Zealand, has been whittling away at the objections to her unassisted voyage since the authorities stepped in last year. She got a bigger, sturdier sailboat, took courses in first aid and learned to suture her own wounds, and practiced coping with sleep deprivation. She made at least one solo trip across the North Sea to England.
But her plans and legal wrangles have contributed to a global debate over the wisdom of allowing ever-younger sailors to take on the risks of sailing the high seas alone.
Concerns were heightened in June when American teen Abby Sunderland had to be rescued in the Indian Ocean. A wave snapped the mast off her yacht and left her helpless until she was eventually rescued by a French fishing boat more than 2,000 miles (3,200 kilometers) west of Australia.
Laura is trying to beat the record set last May by Australian Jessica Watson, who was 16 years old when she completed a 210-day voyage on her 34-foot (10-meter) yacht, Ella’s Pink Lady, around the world. Watson says she has just completed a book on her experience.
Watson remained at sea nonstop for her trip around the globe, but Laura plans to stop at several ports along the way where she can meet family and rest.

World’s Youngest Sailor Sets Sail Under the Sea Shepherd Flag |
Sea Shepherd Conservation Society Founder and President, Captain Paul Watson, along with Laurens de Groot, had a unique conversation around midnight on August 3, 2010 while driving north on Highway 405 from San Clemente to Los Angeles, California. It was early morning in the small Dutch harbor of Den Ostse in the Netherlands when Captain Watson called Laura Dekker—a 14-year-old sailor from the Netherlands—just as she was setting out with her 38-foot sailing yacht Guppy to begin her quest to be the youngest sailor to circumnavigate the globe solo.
Dekker was born on her parent’s sailing yacht off the coast of New Zealand. She has already crossed the North Sea solo at the age of thirteen. Two months ago, Dekker met with Sea Shepherd Netherlands Director Geert Vons and Laurens de Groot in the Sea Shepherd Amsterdam office. She asked if she could fly the Sea Shepherd flag and promote the efforts of Sea Shepherd during her voyage.
Vons, de Groot, and everyone else within Sea Shepherd Netherlands and Sea Shepherd International were immediately enthusiastic.
“I have always said that people should be willing to live their dreams and to be undeterred from pursuing their objectives,” said Captain Watson. “Laura fought the Dutch authorities in court and won. She was not going to let them tell her she could not follow her dreams. Sea Shepherd has always stood for the power of the individual to make a difference, to challenge the odds, and to boldly go where others have feared to venture.”
Dekker will initially sail to Portugal with her father and begin her solo voyage from there. Her first stop will be in the Canary Islands. She is also expected to stop in the Galapagos Islands, where Sea Shepherd Ecuador will organize a warm welcome for her.
Over 100 well-wishers gathered at the dockside of the southern Dutch harbour of Den Osse to wave goodbye to Dekker and her father. It was only last week, that Dekker won a bitter legal fight to overturn a child protection order that had placed her under the guardianship of social workers to stop her setting sail last year when she was thirteen. She has become a Dutch folk hero after rejecting, with parental support, claims by the child protection authorities that the long sea voyage would be too dangerous and damage her “emotional development.”
The teenager has also shrugged off warnings from NATO commanders about piracy off the Horn of Africa and hoisted the black Jolly Roger flag of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society as she set sail.
“The oceans are in trouble, and the community that is best suited to defend biodiversity and marine habitats are the surfers, the scuba divers, the swimmers, and the sailors.” said Captain Watson. “I believe Laura will be a future leader in ocean conservation and this voyage will present her with the greatest educational experience possible—an intimate and thorough acquaintance with the sea and all her beauty, mystery, and challenges.”
“Bon voyage and behouden vaart, Laura,” added Captain Watson, “from the crew of all Sea Shepherd ships, as well as our directors, staff, volunteers and members.”
