Andy Murray claimed his seventh straight win as he dispatched US Open champion Marin Cilic 6-1, 6-4 in the China Open quarter-finals Friday.

Djokovic beat Grigor Dimitrov with a 6-2, 6-4 victory in the very same day as he improved to a 22-0 mark at the China Open.

“Every time I play Andy, it’s a huge challenge. It’s a very physical match. A lot of long rallies, exchanges. I do not expect anything less than that tomorrow,” said Djokovic.

SASHA Grey admits she can feel shy about asking for what she wants during sex.

This is a woman who has starred in more than 200 adult films, and who, at 18, in her first shoot, went off-script and requested her Italian co-star, Rocco Siffredi, become even more extreme during one scene.

“Even women who really are confident in their sexuality, or know what they like, we’re still sort of submissive in the sense that we always want the man to make the first move.

“And when you find a partner you match with sexually, you often let the man take the lead and then that becomes dangerous, because it [gets] repetitive,” she explains.

So even porn stars find it tricky to shake things up in the bedroom?

“It’s been difficult for me, in the past, to demand what I want, especially when you love somebody, because you want to choose your words carefully,” she says.

This would come as a surprise to people, I suggest. Grey laughs: “Well, porn exists in a place where I could do what I wanted.”

This burning need to explore her sexual horizons is what propelled 18-year-old Grey – or rather, Marina Ann Hantzis from Sacramento – towards the harsh lights and flimsy plot-lines of the Los Angeles porn industry in the first place.

“I’d only had sex with a few people before I got into porn. I was very shy, I was the last of my friends to lose my virginity [at 16]. I started having fantasies before I’d even had sex.

Then I met someone I was able to explore with – things most people today are comfortable with doing – but I wanted more. I confided in a couple of girlfriends and they thought I was crazy, so it only made me feel more self-conscious.

“One of the main reasons I got into porn is that I wanted to explore those things safely, because how does an 18-year-old girl go and find somebody to explore sexually with? I don’t trust the internet enough to go and meet people with the same kinks as me.”

After a few years churning through puntastic titles including Face Invaders 4 and Sasha Grey’s Anatomy, she retired at 23, feeling she had “accomplished everything I could as a performer”.

Now, along with writing her debut erotic novel The Juliette Society (“I’m way too young for a memoir”) Grey is trying to build her non-X-rated acting career, having entered the mainstream consciousness with two pivotal roles: playing herself in Entourage, and a high-class escort in Steven Soderbergh’s The Girlfriend Experience.

She recently worked on a Spanish thriller called Open Windows opposite Elijah Wood.

The protagonist of The Juliette Society, Catherine, is a young film student who is drawn into a secret sex club. Grey – who has been dating her camera-operator boyfriend for almost a year – wrote the book because she saw a void in contemporary erotica.

“A lot of those novels exist in a hyper-fantasy world, much like romantic comedies. And who doesn’t like romantic comedies? But I wanted to create something where people really felt like this was something that could happen to them. My character isn’t out there looking for Mr Right.”

In the book, Grey controversially claims sex and violence are two sides of the same coin. As Catherine delves into the sexual underworld, there are graphic descriptions of women being restrained and much more – think Fifty Shades turned up to 11.

Has Grey met women who find this erotic? “Definitely,” she says emphatically. “Something might sound completely offensive to one person, but you have to understand there’s an entire community of people around the world who have been ostracised for their sexual kinks.”

For every woman who has the self-possession to indulge her sexual proclivities on camera à la Grey, there are plenty more who are ashamed to go there even in their fantasies. Grey hopes to help change this.

“It’s a community and a sexual interest that has long been criticised, which is why Fifty Shades of Grey is so important, because it’s addressing a facet of people’s sexuality and allowing people to talk about it openly.”

Self-expression and open-mindedness are one thing, but I mention to Grey my doubts about elements of that sexual underworld, particularly the proliferation of extreme pornography on the internet, which, regardless of the director’s intentions, can be enjoyed through a misogynistic filter.

“I… ” Grey pauses. “I think the biggest thing is, you can’t control who watches porn, so it’s a shame that some people will go into their sexual adult life thinking that all women enjoy being tied up. But I think that’s a very small percentage of people.

“You have more men thinking women don’t need foreplay before sex,” she says with a big laugh. “That’s the reality.” Fair point.

Johnny Football just got himself a way cooler nickname: Johnny Heisman.

Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel became the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy, taking college football’s top individual prize Saturday night after a record-breaking debut.Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o finished second, and Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein was a distant third in the voting. In a Heisman race with two nontraditional candidates, Manziel broke through the class barrier and kept Te’o from becoming the first purely defensive player to win the award.

Manziel drew 474 first-place votes and 2,029 points from the panel of media members and former winners.

“I have been dreaming about this since I was a kid, running around the backyard pretending I was Doug Flutie, throwing Hail Marys to my dad,” he said after hugging his parents and kid sister.

Manziel seemed incredibly calm after his name was announced, hardly resembling the guy who dashes around the football field on Saturday. He simply bowed his head, and later gave the trophy a quick kiss.

“I wish my whole team could be up here with me,” he said with a wide smile.

Te’o had 321 first-place votes and 1,706 points and Klein received 60 firsts and 894 points.

Just a few days after turning 20, Manziel proved times have truly changed in college football, and that experience can be really overrated.

For years, seniors dominated the award named after John Heisman, the pioneering Georgia Tech coach from the early 1900s. In the 1980s, juniors started becoming common winners. Tim Tebow became the first sophomore to win it in 2007, and two more won it in the next two seasons.

Adrian Peterson had come closest as a freshman, finishing second to USC quarterback Matt Leinart in 2004. But it took 78 years for a newbie to take home the big bronze statue. Johnny Football really can do it all.

Peterson was a true freshman for Oklahoma. As a redshirt freshman, Manziel attended school and practiced with the team last year, but did not play in any games.

He’s the second player from Texas A&M to win the Heisman, joining John David Crow from 1957, and did so without the slightest hint of preseason hype. Manziel didn’t even win the starting job until two weeks before the season.

Who needs hype when you can fill up a highlight reel the way Manziel can?

With daring runs and elusive improvisation, Manziel broke 2010 Heisman winner Cam Netwon’s Southeastern Conference record with 4,600 total yards, led the Aggies to a 10-2 record in their first season in the SEC and orchestrated an upset at then-No. 1 Alabama in November that stamped him as a contender for the trophy.

He has thrown for 3,419 yards and 24 touchdowns and run for 1,181 yards and 19 more scores to become the first freshman, first SEC player and fifth player overall to throw for 3,000 yards and run for 1,000 in a season.

Manziel has one more game this season, when the No. 10 Aggies play Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 4.

All the votes have been cast for the 2013 All-Star Game’s starting spots, and the baseball world now awaits Saturday evening’s announcement of the final tallies.

The All-Stars will be unveiled at 6:30 p.m. ET on Saturday on the 2013 MLB All-Star Game Selection Show presented by Taco Bell, televised nationally on FOX.

Voting concluded at 11:59 p.m. ET on Thursday for the eight position players in each league, as well as the American League’s designated hitter. The winners will represent the two leagues in the All-Star Game at Citi Field on Tuesday, July 16.

As of the most recent voting updates announced earlier this week, Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina was the National League’s leading vote-getter with 5,093,645. Meanwhile, Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera led all of Major League Baseball with 5,844,165 votes.

The tightest races in each league appear to be for the final outfield spot. In an AL East showdown, Toronto’s Jose Bautista led Baltimore’s Nick Markakis by fewer than 150,000 votes, with Mike Trout and Adam Jones leading the pack among AL outfielders.

The race for the NL’s final two starting outfield spots was even tighter, as Carlos Gonzalez, Justin Upton and Bryce Harper were separated by a total of 26,213 votes. As of Monday, Harper was the odd man out.

The wait for the news of the NL’s starting second base spot is also sure to be tense, as the Reds’ Brandon Phillips hopes to hold off late charges from the Cardinals’ Matt Carpenter and the Giants’ Marco Scutaro.

The so-called hotshots were remembered as a rambunctious but respectful bunch: pranksters, sometimes, but dedicated and energetic professionals.

Their boss, Prescott Fire Chief Dan Fraijo, grew apprehensive Sunday as another official told him Prescott’s elite Granite Mountain Interagency Hotshot Crew had dug in to escape the wind-driven Yarnell Hill wildfire.

“All he said was, ‘We might have bad news. The entire hotshot crew deployed their shelters,’ ” Fraijo recalled Monday.

The worst was soon confirmed: All but one member of the 20-man crew died after being overrun by the fire, which destroyed 200 buildings in the small town of Yarnell and exceeded 8,000 acres by Monday.

The tragedy reverberated through Prescott and beyond, as portraits of the lost Prescott crew took shape and the town took its first steps toward mourning the dead.

About half a dozen people gathered on the steps of the county courthouse in downtown Prescott on Monday afternoon to pray for the fallen firefighters, for those left injured and homeless by the blaze and for those still fighting the conflagration.

They also prayed for rain.

“What we’d love to see for our firefighters and the town of Yarnell is more rain and lots of it — and preferably less wind,” said the Rev. Scott Mitchell of The Church Next Door. As the people bowed their heads and consulted their Bibles, fire trucks sped by, “Flagstaff Hot Shots” emblazoned on several vehicles.

“That’s the road to Yarnell,” said the Rev. Dave Barreras, 46, leader of the Yavapai Territorial Gospel Rescue Mission.

But Prescott had no more firefighters to send. Its only wildland team was gone.

The hotshot crew victims were all men, most in their 20s.

“It’s a younger man’s game. These people keep themselves in exceptional condition,” said Fraijo, who added, “I never heard them complain…. They always showed a great deal of respect. They always seemed to be playing pranks on each other, and a few on me.”

The deceased were Andrew Ashcraft, 29; Robert Caldwell, 23; Travis Carder, 31; Dustin Deford, 24; Christopher MacKenzie, 30; Eric Marsh, 43; Grant McKee, 21; Sean Misner, 26; Scott Norris, 28; Wade Parker, 22; John Percin, 24; Anthony Rose, 23; Jesse Steed, 36; Joe Thurston, 32; Travis Turbyfill, 27; William Warneke, 25; Clayton Whitted, 28; Kevin Woyjeck, 21; and Garret Zuppiger, 27.

At least three hailed from Southern California: Woyjeck from Seal Beach and Warneke and MacKenzie from Hemet.

The identity of the crew member who survived has not been released.

“He’s well; he had been assigned to do a function and he wasn’t with them when they had deployed to shelter,” Fraijo said. “He feels terribly, and we all feel terribly, and we have very few words that express that sort of sorry. When you take a person in your arms and hug ’em, you know, you don’t have to say too much.”

Dennis Godfrey, a spokesman with the federal Bureau of Land Management, said officials had expected that 400 firefighters would be on duty Monday, but only 280 were on the lines by afternoon.

Godfrey said officials were hoping for more but didn’t know when, or whether, they would arrive. “There are fires elsewhere,” Godfrey said. “We only have so many resources to deal with.”

Thunderheads built over Prescott on Monday, delivering thunder, lightning and heavy rain by midday. But by 3:30 p.m., none of the rain had hit the fire area.

The blaze was sparked by a lightning strike Friday, officials said.

In a sprawling gymnasium on a college campus in Prescott, cots were set up and meals were being served for those who fled the raging wildfire. Between 40 and 50 people had registered at the facility, organized by the Red Cross, and more were expected by nightfall, said Michele Maki of the Red Cross.

Shelters had also been organized in Wickenburg and Kingman.

“It’s been a very busy day for the Red Cross,” Maki said. The shelters are meant to serve not only as a place to eat or rest, she said, but also as a place to seek emotional and spiritual help from counselors and chaplains.

“For these people, it’s very personal,” Maki said.

Kathy Bryan of Williamson Valley said the members of the fire crew who perished helped save her home from the Doce blaze after it flared up June 18 in the Granite Mountain Wilderness, northwest of Prescott. That’s roughly 20 miles north of the Yarnell Hill fire.

“These hotshots were on our properties, saving them … saving my house,” Bryan said. “It’s heartbreaking.”

Bryan and her dogs fled her home before the blaze approached. Soon Bryan’s cousin called, letting her know that the wife of one of the hotshots fighting the blaze had offered Bryan a place to stay. That woman is now a widow, Bryan said.

Now Bryan believes it’s her turn to help. “I need to find out what she needs,” Bryan said she told her cousin. “What can I do for her?”

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, U.S. Army Sgt. T.J. Ashcraft said one of the dead firefighters was his younger brother Andrew, who was a good man and a good father to his four children.

“We always kind of pushed each other in good ways,” said Ashcraft, 32. “He went the firefighter route and I went the military route.”

Another dead firefighter, Anthony Rose, was expecting his first child with his fiancee, according to family friend Phyllis Barney of Glendale, Ariz.

Barney’s family met Rose in the small Arizona town of Crown King, southeast of Prescott, when Rose moved there at age 16. In Crown King, Rose earned his GED online and went to work for the local fire department.

“Just getting notifications that an entire crew is killed … is a little difficult to handle when they’re your own and whatnot,” Barney said. “But when you’ve got one that really was kind of your own … it’s even tougher.”

The firefighters’ bodies were taken to the Maricopa County medical examiner’s office in Phoenix on Monday, and it was not clear when they would be returned to Prescott. Officials were still deciding when to hold a formal memorial service.

Some of the cirumstances of the crew’s plight came into slightly sharper focus Monday, although officials cautioned that it could be a couple of days before more preliminary information was available while investigators picked through the disaster area.

Before the flames overtook the firefighters, a thunderstorm cell had moved into their location west of state Highway 89 between Yarnell and Peeples Valley, fire officials said.

The storm created strong and erratic winds in an area described as extremely rocky, with rough terrain and deep canyons. The gusts pushed the flames toward the hotshots, who were trying to create a firebreak in hopes of stopping the flames’ advance, said Wade Ward, a spokesman for the Prescott Fire Department.

As the winds shifted and fire approached, the men were probably trying to get to safety — usually a clearing, Ward said.

“It had to be a perfect storm” for them to have deployed their fire shelters — a last-ditch effort made in desperate situations, he said. Officials lost contact with the crew about 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

“Obviously wherever they deployed their shelters, they were too close to heavy fuels, so they got overrun,” said Art Morrison, a fire spokesman with the Arizona State Forestry Division.

Ward knew the men, calling them “brothers.” He described the elite team  as “very cautious” and “very conservative.”

Wade Parker, 22, of Chino Valley, about 30 miles north of Prescott, was another of the victims.

Parker’s 14-year-old cousin, Hailey McMains, viewed him as a big brother. “After church, we would find a place to sit and talk about life,” Hailey said. Wade would ask her: “’Anything we need to pray for, Hailey?’ If I was having a bad week, we’d pray about that.”

Hailey said Wade and his high school sweetheart planned to marry in October. They had been together six years, she said.

She was at the home of an aunt and uncle Sunday evening when she heard on the news that some firefighters had died. “I asked my aunt, ‘Is Wade OK?’” Hailey said.

Her aunt put her fingers to her lips and said: “Sssssshhhhhhh,” pointing to one of Wade’s young nephews.

“A little while later, as I was leaving, she whispered, ‘Wade didn’t make it, Hailey,’ ” the girl recalled. “I cried all night long.”

PHILANTHROPIST Jeanne Pratt has celebrated being named 2013 Victorian of the Year by announcing a program to help vulnerable young Victorians.

One hundred high school students in rural Victoria will be supported by the Pratt Foundation in partnership with the Smith Family, Mrs Pratt said as she was honoured in Melbourne.

“I’m doing this because I know that when I first came to Australia as a child of a refugee with no money, education changed my life and shaped my future,” Mrs Pratt, widow of billionaire Richard Pratt, said.

“I look forward to seeing one of those hundred up here getting this award.”

The partnership will link 100 vulnerable high school students with a Learning for Life worker who will support them during their schooling and pay for schooling basics.

“It will encourage the students to stay motivated,” Mrs Pratt said.

She was named Victorian of the Year at a ceremony on Monday along with youth suicide prevention campaigner Nichole Hussey, who was named Young Victorian of the Year.

The 22-year-old was a founding member of youth suicide prevention initiative, In 2 Life, which runs a Facebook group to support at-risk young people.

Ms Hussey said the award belonged not just to her, but every member of the team at In 2 Life and she hoped the publicity would help encourage more people to donate their time to the project.

“We just want to get a higher amount of volunteers because I’m hoping after today we’ll get more members,” Ms Hussey said.

In 2 Life has about 22,000 members and 20 volunteers.

In the three months to December last year, more than 1000 young people were referred on to helplines and counselling services from the suicide prevention group.

They’ve been engaged since the end of 2009, but on Wednesday morning Kristen Bell proposed to Dax Shepard in celebration of the Supreme Court’s decisions on the Defense of Marriage Act and Prop. 8. (Yes, he popped the question the first time.)

“@daxshepard1 will you marry me? Xo #marriageequality #loveislove,” she said on Twitter shortly after the decisions came down.

Shepard’s tweeted reply?

“DOMA is dead. Prop 8 is dead. Now let’s bring my big, gay marriage to @IMKristenBell to Life!!!!”

The two, who welcomed baby daughter Lincoln in March, had famously said they would not marry until their gay and lesbian friends could legally do so. Hence the years-long engagement.

“The reason we’re not rushing to get married is because I don’t feel appropriate taking advantage of a right that’s denied to my best friends,” Bell told the Advocate early last year. “That’s why we’ve been so hesitant. Dax and I have talked about it a lot, and this issue is very important to both of us. We’re just standing up for what we believe in. Period.”

It looks like gay marriage in California is good enough for Bell and Shepard, however, because the rite will still be far from available nationwide. Perhaps they’ll get the OK from gay-rights groups anyway, like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie did last year when they finally got engaged after saying they’d wait till marriage was legal for gay couples as well as straight.

Although same-sex weddings are expected to resume in California as early as next month, the Supreme Court’s actions Wednesday won’t force any change in the states that reject same-sex marriage. After the decisions were released, the group Human Rights Campaign called for marriage equality nationwide in five years. Thirty-one states currently have bans on gay marriage, many written into their constitutions, according to Politics Now.

Dewhurst said an “unruly mob using Occupy Wall Street tactics” defeated the legislation he said was intended to protect women and babies, according to the Texas Tribune.

Protesters in the gallery erupted in cheers along with Senate Democrats when the clock struck midnight without a final vote having taken place, preventing Republican senators from completing the voting process within the constitutionally prescribed time and effectively defeating the bill.

A 19-year-old Michigan man celebrated his birthday for the first time late last year after spending the first 18 years of his life not knowing when he was born, reports MLive.com.

“It was pretty awesome to have a birthday,” said Noah Boyce of his special day—Dec. 10, 1993. His father, David Boyce, had repudiated his citizenship in 1996 and believes government should follow God’s law.

Noah Boyce told MLive, “I didn’t know what to expect, but people started giving me presents and birthday cards.”

In 2011, when Noah was 17, the Boyce family was evicted from their home because his dad refused to pay property taxes.

“Nobody should pay to live on their own land,” David Boyce said at the time. “I’ve never been a danger to the community. I’m not a drinker or a smoker or a carouser. I’ve never attacked anyone. I’m very nonviolent. I haven’t harmed anyone, and yet they call me a threat.”

The eviction left Noah—who had no known birth certificate, no Social Security number, and who never attended public school—to fend for himself.

He said he slept on friends’ couches and stayed for a short periods with families from Heart O’ The Lakes United Brethren Church in Columbia Township, which he began attending with his family in 2006. A Good Samaritan named Chuck Chapman took Noah in for a year. He and others from the church spent about four months helping Noah establish the documents he needed to prove who he was.

Church members located the midwife who helped deliver Noah to figure out his birthday.

With the help of Chapman, Noah began to receive tutoring at a nonprofit educational group, got his driver’s license and recently started a job at the YMCA, where his older sisters also work.

“I’ve taken control of my own life now, and things are starting to look up,” Noah said. “I wish I had been able to go to school when I was younger. I’d be in a better place now. It’s hard to catch up, but I’m still young. Like they say, you’re never too old to learn.”

The other was that America will be able to vote for a weekly “MVP” contestant, based on how they play the game.

In addition to announcing the contestants, CBS has opened the voting for the new season’s first MVP. Of course, we have no idea how any of them is playing the game just yet, but the site includes each houseguest’s planned strategy. That’s the plan that – for at least some of them – will probably go right out the window once they start to get to know the other houseguests. But still, it gives us some clue as to how these contestants will be trying to play the game.

In addition to not knowing who’s playing the best game, we also don’t know what the MVP’s “special power” will be, so we’re really kind of going into this blind from the start, but that’s ok. So are the houseguests, assuming none of them know one another.

“Three months ago, the journey began,” host Carson Daly wantonly reminded us as the final night of The Voice performances kicked off. And, yes, we have all indeed sat through three months’ worth of blind auditions, battle rounds, live shows, judges’ egos and Blake Shelton’s quest for world domination, among other things. But now, the end is nigh, and we’re mere hours away from crowning a Season Four winner.

With Adam Levine and Shakira having been knocked out of the race last week, evil mastermind Blake and Usher were left to face off, with each of the remaining three contestants singing three songs each. So, who will walk away the winner? Let’s break it down.

Team Blake’s Swon Brothers – the first-ever duo to make it to the finals – can do no wrong. Each week their fan base seemingly grows, culminating with them nearly topping the iTunes songs chart last week with the Loggins and Messina (by way of Anne Murray) tune “Danny’s Song,” which they reprised Monday night as their “defining moment” of the season. They also sang the falsetto-heavyEagles track “I Can’t Tell You Why” and hammed it up alongside Blake on Brad Paisley’s “Celebrity,” in which Shelton gave a wink and nod to his rising star status with a huge grin while singing: “I’ll make the supermarket tabloids, they’ll write some awful stuff; but the more they run my name down, the more my price goes up.”

Why they will win: Never underestimate the power and appeal of White Guys With Guitars on these types of reality competition shows. (See: Seasons seven through 11 of American Idol.) After weeks of middling out in the 30s on the iTunes chart, they suddenly shot up to Number Two last week, overtaking everyone else on the show. This week they’ve done almost as well, making them the latest dark horse of the competition.

Why they won’t win: The producers of The Voice have given them the opening “death slot” two weeks in a row, leaving them with an uphill battle to fight. That said, they bucked the trend last week and came out on top – which makes us wonder if they’re the real ones to beat and the show’s slowing them down to move the others to the head of the class. Still, it’s hard to contend with the fact that they finished all three of their songs 80 minutes into a 120-minute show.

Meanwhile, Team Usher’s Michelle Chamuel has moved from dark horse to frontrunner over the course of the past few weeks, moving into the upper echelon of the iTunes chart with her take on Taylor Swift’s “I Knew You Were Trouble” two weeks ago. She took on the song again as her defining moment this season, since “defining moment” apparently means “highest-charting song.” She also tackled Annie Lennox’s “Why” and did a duet with Usher on U2’s “One,” a strange song choice considering Usher isn’t best known for power ballads. (Why didn’t he choose something more upbeat that would have shown off both their strong points?)

Why she will win: America loves an underdog, and Michelle certainly carried that torch this season. Watching her go from Geeky Girl With Glasses to Bona Fide Rock Star was quite an impressive journey. Plus, she’s by far the most entertaining contestant to watch in terms of stage presence, proving she’s the overall package.

Why she won’t win: As exemplified by his choice of “One,” Usher has picked some questionable songs for Michelle over the course of the season, focusing far too much on ballads when she’s better suited for uptempo fare. Still, it’s gotten her this far. So the real culprit here if she loses is that indie rock can’t compete against country music when it comes to who mainstream America is willing to vote for.

And then there’s Blake’s Danielle Bradbery, the 16-year-old cutie pie with the pitch-perfect country voice who’s been the season-long frontrunner. While it was hard to pick, Blake chose Pam Tillis’ “Maybe It Was Memphis” as Danielle’s defining moment, because it was when she really broke away from the pack. (Again, in terms of charting.) The do-over performance prompted contestant-less Adam to declare that she should be the winner. She also did a borderline creepy duet with Blake on “Timber, I’m Falling in Love” by Patty Loveless and nabbed that coveted pimp spot once again for her take on Sara Evans’ “Born to Fly.”

Why she will win: Two words: Pimp spot. Yes, The Voice would be remiss if they didn’t jam the crown on her head, seeing as the show has yet to produce a huge star – and Danielle could be it. She’s been an almost unstoppable presence on the iTunes chart week after week, leaving everyone else trying to play catch up. And deservedly so, as she’s been consistently good, virtually pitch-perfect all season, and she has a girl-next-door-meets-pageant-queen look that is probably very appealing to a wide swath of viewers.

Why she won’t win: If Danielle does have an Achilles’ heel, it’s her age. So if she happens to fall short, it’s most likely because people think she’s young enough to “have another shot” at fame.

So, there you have it, folks. Seems like a win-win-win no matter who wins, right?

A British man has survived a fall from the 15th floor of a building in New Zealand, local media report.

Tom Stilwell fell from his neighbour’s balcony in his apartment block in Auckland at 02:00 local time on Sunday (14:00 GMT on Saturday), reports said.

He was trying to lower himself onto his balcony, which was directly below his neighbour’s, when he fell, police said.

His friends said that he had bone fractures and internal injuries, but was “fine” and “a very lucky man”.

He was awake and laughing on Monday, but had no recollection of what happened, his friends told New Zealand newsgroup Fairfax Media.

“He looks alright,” his flatmate, Beth Goodwin, said. “It’s more internal injuries. He’s broken some bones in his ribs and neck but they’re not important bones.”

In a statement, New Zealand police said: “It appears that the man was locked out of his 14th floor apartment. He fell while attempting to climb down the outside of the building from a 15th floor apartment directly above his, in an effort to gain access via his balcony.”

There were “no suspicious circumstances surrounding the fall”, the statement added.

‘Tipsy but polite’

The 20-year-old is said to be in New Zealand on a working holiday.

Mr Stilwell discovered he was locked out of his flat early on Sunday, and asked a neighbour if he could climb down from her balcony into his flat, his friends said.

The neighbour, Geraldine Bautista, told the New Zealand Herald that Mr Stilwell was “a little tipsy” but polite.

“I wasn’t scared of him – he just requested ‘Can you please let me jump off from the balcony? I will not bother you, just let me use your balcony.'”

“I never thought he would really do that. In my mind I thought ‘Okay, I’ll just let you see that it’s really impossible. I didn’t think he’d jump, because it’s really scary.”

However, he quickly pulled himself over the balcony railing before she could stop him, she said.

“I thought I was dreaming… it happened within seconds,” she said. “I couldn’t even scream for help.”

Mr Stilwell’s fall was broken by the roof of an adjacent building, reportedly some 13 floors below.

He was taken to hospital in a critical condition, but was in a satisfactory condition by Monday, a hospital spokesperson said.

Dr Tony Smith, a medical director at St John, an emergency healthcare organisation, told the New Zealand Herald that a person’s chances of survival were increased if they were able to break their fall on something.

However, “survival from falls of that height are extraordinarily unusual”, he said.

In December 2007, New York window cleaner Alcides Moreno plummeted 47 floors when cables holding the platform he and his brother were working on failed. His brother died but Mr Moreno made a full recovery, something doctors attributed in part to his escaping major head injuries.

In June 2010 a four-year-old boy escaped with minor injuries after falling from the 17th floor of a hotel in Miami. Joey Williams, who bounced off palm trees as he fell to the 10th-floor pool area, was sitting up in bed by the next day.

An operation to troll the NSA has started up online in a bid to jam the spy scanners.

The plan is to ‘test’ the system by sending a message full of terrorist buzz words to the agency Wednesday at 7pm EST.

The website was set up in response to the accusations at the U.S. government is collecting and looking at data from Internet companies like Google, Facebook and Apple through a secretive program codenamed PRISM.

Operation ‘Troll The NSA’ describes the plan stating: ‘If millions of us, all at the exact same time, call or email someone with our keywords-of-terror-filled script, we can give our nation’s impressive surveillance system the kind of test it deserves.

‘They say they don’t read or listen to the contents of our messages. Why not test it out? It’ll be fun.’

The creators of the website have written a seemingly innocent email about a bad job and travel plans addressed from a disgruntled employee to a friend.

Operation: The plan is to ‘test’ the system by sending a message full of terrorist buzz words to the agency Wednesday at 7pm EST.

But words designed to catch the scanner’s interest litter the script, including famous American landmarks such as ‘Manhattan,’ ‘Golden Gate Bridge’, ‘Brooklyn Bridge’,’ Verrazano Narrows Bridge’ and ‘Financial District.’

It also included words associated with terrorists such as ‘death to millions of Americans,’ ‘strike at any second’ and ‘oppressive regime.’

They hope that the scanner will pick up the words and consequently get jammed from the overload.

The stunt was set up by two BuzzFeed employees.

Chris Baker and Mike Lacher, creative directors at the news site, say they hope millions of people will take part.

‘It would be amazing if we actually did screw with their systems a little bit,’ said Baker.

‘But the ultimate goal is that the site itself will get enough attention … that NSA becomes aware of it on some level and gives them a moment to reflect on their duties,’ he told the Daily Beast.

Edward Snowden, the NSA whistleblower who leaked the secret information about a classified U.S. government surveillance program is currently on the run in Hong Kong.

Snowden, 29, is a technology expert working for a private firm subcontracted to  the US National Security Agency.

Last week he told the Guardian newspaper of a mammoth surveillance operation run by the NSA on telephone and Internet records around the world.

In the US he has been branded a traitor and there is pressure for his extradition from Hong Kong.

However, he has triggered a debate in many countries on whether state snooping goes too far.

THE son of Brazilian billionaire Eike Batista has been convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the death of a cyclist.

Mr Batista’s 21-year-old son Thor hit the cyclist last year while driving his Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren at night through a low-income suburb in Rio de Janeiro.

Wanderson dos Santos was riding his bike home from work and died instantly.

Judge Daniela Barbosa Assumpcao de Souza sentenced Batista to two years of community service, the two-year suspension of his driver’s licence and a one million real ($489,000) fine. The sentence was handed down Wednesday night and can be appealed.

Eike Batista is chairman of an industrial conglomerate active in the energy, mining and logistics fields.

Judge Souza ruled that over two years Thor Batista must work one hour a day for a yet-to-be defined organisation, “preferably one involved in the recovery of traffic accident victims,” according to a statement from the judiciary.

The $US500,000 fine ($489,000) will be used to pay for goods the organisation needs to help accident victims, such as hospital and physical rehabilitation products, the statement said.

Batista’s attorney Ary Bergher told the O Globo newspaper that the judge punished the younger Batista “only because he is rich. The constitution says everyone is equal under the law.”

A person answering the phone at Mr Bergher’s office said the lawyer was not immediately available for comment.

numerology for Nashwa el-Sayed

She’s an American who survived her own “Argo”-style daring escape from the Middle East.

And last week, Nashwa el-Sayed, 22, added a New York coda to her thrilling tale that shows this tenacious, young woman is dedicated to more than just her own personal freedom.

We have a stateswoman in the making here.

“I was born on Dec. 26, 1990, in Columbia Presbyterian to a Puerto Rican-New Yorker mom and an Egyptian-born father named Mohamed el-Sayed,” she says. “My mom was 30. My dad was like 33.”

She had no siblings. Sayed learned to creep and toddle in a home on 106th St. in South Ozone Park, Queens.

“My mother tells me that when I was 2 1/2, she had a big fight with my father over his physical abusiveness,” she says. “First, he abused her. When he began to beat me, my mom said it caused me to stutter.”

Her mom took Mohamed Sayed to court. He moved out. The mom maintained custody of her daughter, but the dad was granted unsupervised visitation.

“One day in 1993, my father picked me up and didn’t bring me back to my mom,” she says. “My life changed forever that day.”

The NYPD and FBI search was futile. Sayed had absconded with his daughter to Alexandria, Egypt.

“I was learning English and didn’t know any Arabic,” she says. “I was placed with my father’s brother for two years. Then my father remarried and I moved back with him. But his new wife resented me.

“At 5, I became a maid,” she says. “Waiting on adults, cleaning and doing house chores. My stepmother also beat me and threatened that if I told my father she would kill me.”

Nashwa says she was a house servant until she was 9, when her stepmother gave birth to an autistic child.

“My job was to take care of my half-brother,” she says. “My father and his wife fought. She beat me. When I finally told my father that his wife was beating me, he beat me with a belt. I felt so alone, so alienated. I started asking about my real mother. He told me my mom had given me up as a baby and that she had died.”

Soon, her father divorced.

Nashwa lived alone with her father. “One day, out of the blue, he said, ‘Someone is coming to visit you.’ ”

Two weeks later, she answered the door. “I was about 10. Standing there was my mother,” she recalls. “I didn’t speak any English. She spoke no Arabic. But it was the happiest moment of my life. I embraced her. I wouldn’t let go.”

Her mother stayed for two weeks, explaining that she had finally learned of her daughter’s whereabouts from an Egyptian friend of Mohamed’s in Queens.

“It was heartbreaking when my mother returned to New York, but she promised to return,” says Nashwa. “My mom sent me tapes and videos: Backstreet Boys, Shakira, Madonna. I listened over and over. Memorizing lyrics. Asking my father what each English word meant.”

When her father got cable TV, she watched sitcoms like “Friends” and “The King of Queens,” learning English from Arabic subtitles. “My mom called every week, and she would correct my English until I could speak full sentences. My mother came back and stayed for the whole summer.”

Nashwa says her mother visited her only twice more after that summer, imploring her to find a way to come to America. “Unfortunately, I did not develop a deep relationship with my mother,” she says. “But what she told me about life in America made me want to go.”

Nashwa says she pestered her father to send her to New York to study. “He always said, ‘Next year. Next year.’ I was about 14 when America went to war with Iraq. It electrified the politics of the Middle East. I was an honor student in high school. When I was 16, I told my father I wanted a life in politics. He laughed and said, ‘Politics is not for girls. I found you a husband. He’s a businessman, so you will study business to help him at work.’ ”

Horrified by the prospect of an arranged marriage to an older stranger, she called her mother, who called the State Department.

“A few days later, in the summer of 2008, I was approached on the street by an FBI agent who gave me the name of a woman State Department agent I should secretly meet at the American Embassy.”

The next day, Nashwa told her father she was going to a friend’s party. Instead, she met with the State Department staffer and two FBI agents and told them everything about her abduction, life of servitude, beatings and a pending arranged marriage. “The State Department agent asked me, ‘Why should we help you?’ I said, ‘Because I am an American and I want a better life in America.’ ”

When she got home, her father was in a rage. He beat her. Her uncle’s wife had been in the embassy that morning wearing a burka and had seen Nashwa talking with the agents.

“I was taken to the uncle’s house,” she says. “All of my family was gathered, berating me, saying I was a bad Muslim. That in America, I would be drinking, partying with boys, living a life of sin. I looked at them and said, ‘If America is so bad, why are you all on a waiting list to go there?’ They had no answer.”

Nashwa called her mother, saying she would kill herself before marrying a stranger. When her mom told the FBI that her daughter had been seen at the embassy and was contemplating suicide, they again surreptitiously contacted Nashwa. “They said they had a seat on a flight leaving Cairo in the morning. ‘This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance,’ the agent said.”

Nashwa arranged to sleep at a friend’s house, grabbed her secret $600 in savings and texted the FBI agent the friend’s address. She didn’t sleep a wink. Then at 5 a.m. on Aug. 13, 2008, Nashwa tiptoed out of the friend’s apartment. She raced down the seven steps to the gate.

No van.

Panicked, she texted the FBI agents. The feds replied they were running late. Her phone buzzed with a text from her father. She started to run. Her father called. She ran faster. Almost a mile. Ran all the way to the highway — where the FBI agents skidded to a stop.

They pulled Nashwa into an unmarked van and raced for the airport. Handed her an American passport. Her father called. Her father texted. “I threw the cell phone out the window,” she says.

Suddenly, she was on a plane to Austria.

“I connected to a plane to France,” she says. “And then, like a dream come true, I was landing at John F. Kennedy Airport in Queens, where I was kidnapped by my father 15 years earlier.”

The mother-daughter reunion was not the fairy-tale ending Nashwa had imagined.

Time, distance, clashing cultures and her mom’s boyfriend all created a chilly barrier.

“I stayed with my mother until I was 18,” she says. “Then I enrolled in Queens College, took student loans and got a job in a mall and waiting tables at Woodhaven House restaurant and found an apartment on Craigslist and studied hard.”

On Friday, Nashwa was awarded a bachelor’s degree in political science and international relations from Queens College. But she was not there to collect her diploma.

Last Tuesday, she left on a two-week mission to the Middle East with the prestigious Ibrahim Foundation Leadership and Dialogue Project to study the political, cultural and economic structures of Dubai, Israel, Oman and Saudi Arabia.

Nashwa is one of six students representing Christianity, Islam and Judaism — two from each faith — working to foster a common dialogue in the flaring Middle Eastern conflicts.

“My other goal in life besides international politics is to start a foundation to help families struggling with international abduction,” she says. “I want to use my own experience to help others going through similar nightmares. My father laughed at me when I told him I wanted a life in politics. I live back in my native America now, so I think I will have the last laugh.”

You’ve seen a lot of alley-oops from Chris Paul to Blake Griffin over the last two seasons, but unless you’re a Lakers fan, you’re probably not sick of them. We’re to the point where it’s not a highlight every time these guys combine for a sick alley-oop, but this one is pretty great, even by their standards.

There are very few pick off plays that haven’t been done ad nauseum throughout the different levels of baseball, to the point where they seem almost rote, even when successful.

This isn’t one of those plays.

What you see in the video above is, apparently, called “the ol’ Wichita pickoff.” The Wichita pickoff apparently consists of a remarkably brazen move where the pitcher fakes a pick off to second base, then has the shortstop point to the outfield as if trying to tell a confused outfielder where the ball was sitting.

Instead, the pitcher is still holding the ball, with the base runner suddenly caught if he dares think that the throw back to the bag did go awry.

Yet this particularly pickoff play was more than just a gimmick, it also came at a remarkably important point in a state championship series. The trick pickoff was used by Southaven (Miss.) senior pitcher Wyatt Short against Gulfport (Miss.) Harrison Central High during the opening game of the best-of-three Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 6A state title series.

In fact, the play came in the top of the seventh inning, with the unnamed Harrison Central runner standing on second base and representing a prospective go-ahead run.

Instead, Short’s timely pickoff thinking earned Southaven a huge second out in its final defensive frame, with Short retiring the following batter to get out of the inning. In the following half inning Nic Short delivered a walk-off groundout after Southaven had loaded the bases, giving the school — and his brother — a victory in the first game of the title series.

That win set the stage for a dominant remainder of the series for Southaven, which cruised to an 8-2 victory in the second game to earn the school a Class 6A crown.

And to think, it might have gone entirely differently if not for a “Wichita pickoff.” Who’d have thunk it?

The FBI has opened an investigation into accusations that one of its agents took lavish gifts and cash from an informant who has been indicted in the murder of a popular Atlanta rapper known as Lil Phat.

The informant, Russian ex-mobster Mani Chulpayev, has told investigators for the Department of Justice’s Office of Inspector General that he was asked for and gave the FBI agent gifts of cash, jewelry, watches, expensive sports shoes, basketball game tickets, hotel rooms and the use of luxury cars, according to his lawyer, George Plumides.

“The agent obstructed a murder investigation,” Plumides told ABC News in an interview to broadcast Thursday on ABC News’ “World News with Diane Sawyer” and “Nightline”.

“That’s my opinion and it is Mani’s as well,” said the suspect’s lawyer, claiming the FBI agent’s efforts to get local police and detectives to leave Chulpayev alone actually complicated his client’s case and led to the murder charges against him.

“Well, it’s nice to have an FBI agent that is looking over your shoulder, I guess. But I think he was ill served. He didn’t get a bargain,” Plumides said.

The FBI confirmed to ABC News that the DOJ’s Inspector General and the FBI’s own Inspection Division are both looking into the allegations against the agent, Dante Jackson.

“We take the allegations very seriously,” an FBI spokesperson said. “The policy on this could not be more clear.”

Phone messages and a letter sent by ABC News to Jackson at the FBI office in Atlanta seeking comment were not answered.

The murder case grows out of the 2012 death of Melvin Vernell III, 19, a popular rap artist in Atlanta who used the name Lil Phat.

Prosecutors in Fulton County, Ga. allege that Chulpayev, who says he has worked with the FBI since the 1990s, helped arrange the murder in league with four other men. A grand jury indictment charges them with murder, felony murder, street gang criminal activity and weapons counts.

Prosecutors said Lil Phat was involved with Chulpayev and the other suspects in a dispute over “drugs and other ‘business’ dealings.”

Chulpayev’s lawyer said his client will enter a plea of not guilty and has an alibi for the night Lil Phat was murdered outside an Atlanta hospital where Lil Phat was waiting for his fiancee to give birth to their child.

It was the alleged role of Chulpayev in the murder that led to the significant FBI investigation of one of its own agents.

As an apparent informant for the FBI for almost a decade, Chulpayev has twice been able to avoid long prison terms of possible deportation.

Even before the murder charge, an ABC News investigation found that someone in the FBI attempted to divert law enforcement attention from allegations that Chulpayev was selling stolen luxury cars to unsuspecting victims.

One of the victims, Travis Jones of Atlanta, said when he reported to local police that Chulpayev had sold him a stolen car, he was told by a detective that Chulpayev was protected by the FBI.

“He’s just untouchable,” Jones told ABC News.

When a reporter from ABC News’ Atlanta affiliate WSB-TV confronted Chulpayev earlier this year, he said he received a phone call from the FBI office in Atlanta asking why he was interested in Chulpayev.

France will mark its first gay marriage Wednesday after months of often bitter debate and violent protest that have divided the nation.

In what is expected to be a simple ceremony, billed by the French media as the “marriage of the century,” Vincent Autin and Bruno Boileau will make Gallic history.

The town hall in the southern French city of Montpellier, where the local mayor presides over civil unions, is not big enough for the 200 friends and family invited along with 300 gay activists, more than 100 journalists from around the world — who are required to have obtained special accreditation to attend — and a government minister. The event has been moved to a local function hall instead.

Autin, 40, a gay-rights campaigner who works in the Montpellier tourist office, and Boileau, 30, a civil servant, published their declaration to marry and organized the ceremony immediately after legislation known as the “marriage for all” bill became law here 10 days ago. The pair have been living together for seven years and had long planned to be the first gay couple to marry when the law was passed, which made France the 14th country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage.

The law, a key social reform in Socialist President Francois Hollande‘s 2012 election campaign, also allows gay and lesbian couples to adopt children, something Autin and Boileau have said they plan to do.

But opponents of same-sex marriage have brought parts of French cities to a standstill over recent months with street demonstrations against the measure. At the most recent protest last Sunday, attended by more than 150,000 people after the bill had already been signed into law, clashes with police resulted in 293 arrests.

On May 21, a well-known right-wing historian and essayist, Dominique Venner, who had described the law allowing same-sex marriage and adoption as “detestable,” died after shooting himself inside Paris’ famed Notre Dame Cathedral, which was full of tourists and worshipers. In a letter he placed on the altar before pulling out a gun, the 78-year-old Venner wrote: “I offer what remains of my life in an act of protest.”

Extra police will be on hand in Montpellier for Autin and Boileau’s marriage, which is set to take place at 5:30 p.m. local time. Helene Mandroux, the Socialist mayor who will conduct the ceremony, told journalists that she had been advised by one anonymous caller to “get bodyguards.”

Boileau told Le Point magazine that the aim of the couple’s high-profile nuptials was the message of “equality for all, that everyone can marry in their town.”

Mandroux told the Nouvel Observateur magazine that the marriage was “not a political act.”

“The union of Vincent and Bruno is bringing a major advance for society,” the mayor said. “A major discrimination is disappearing. Vincent Autin says it’s the victory of love over hate, and I can only agree.”

An expectant mother and her young child died in a horrific boating crash on a North Carolina lake on Saturday.

Melissa Chambers Britt, 32, and her 3-year-old son William Jaiden Britt of Oak Ridge were killed when a speedboat collided with their pontoon boat.

William Clayborn Britt, 33, the boy’s father, was driving the boat and unharmed, while Melissa’s brother, Michael Chambers, was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries.

There was also a family of four in the speedboat, none of whom were injured in the incident on High Rock Lake just after noon.

Michael Greene, 52, has been named as the driver of the speedboat.

Investigations are ongoing and no charges have been filed in the case.

MyFox8 reported that Greene will have to wait until next week to hear if criminal charges will be pursued.

There is no speed limit on this lake but neighbors told WFMY that the speedboat was traveling around 50-60 mph when the crash occurred in a narrow section of the lake.

Melissa was thrown from the boat after the collision and a crew searched the lake for several hours before they retrieved her body. The young boy was taken to hospital where died.

A friend of the family told WFMY that his father jumped into the water in an attempt to save his son and pregnant wife.

Emergency crews said that they believe that the speedboat driver getting distracted may have caused the collision.

The fourth person on the boat, Michael Chambers, was taken to hospital with head injuries but he is expected to recover. The family pet dog is also missing after the incident.

Sgt Anthony Sharum of NC Wildlife told WXII: ‘The speed boat driver suddenly became aware of the pontoon boat and attempted to turn and avoid a collision but unfortunately they were too close together.’

Sharum added: ‘Oftentimes an operator can be distracted by passengers in their boat, maybe their gauges or telephones or looking at houses along the lakeside. Many things can distract a driver.’

Authorities say speed may have been a factor in the accident but claim there is no indication that alcohol was involved.

Around 50 volunteers also helped out with the search for Melissa on Saturday afternoon.

While it was reported that nobody on either boats was wearing a life jacket, a the friend of the Britt family told WFMY that the 3-year-old was indeed wearing a safety jacket.

Neighbors told Fox that they were shocked by the accident and feared for their own safety on the lake.

‘It worries me because I got a 17 year old and he goes on the pontoon sometimes and then I got my 5-five-year-old, it’s just scary,’ said Patina Nelson.

SLOVENIAN adventurer and environmentalist Matevz Lenarcic has became the first person to fly an ultra-light plane from Europe to America and back over the North Pole.

After two days waiting in France for favourable weather, Lenarcic took off from Saint-Nazaire earlier on Sunday and finally landed in Ljubljana.

“I’ve had more trouble than I had expected, and that prolonged the expedition but what matters is that me and the plane have arrived safely,” the 54-year-old told a crowd of well-wishers after landing in Ljubljana on Sunday.

But his month-long journey was not all plain sailing.

The trained biologist had to make an unscheduled stop in Saint-Nazaire, northwestern France, due to weather conditions and an Irish airport did not have the type of fuel required for his aircraft.

But after two days waiting in France for favourable weather, Lenarcic took off from Saint-Nazaire earlier on Sunday and finally landed in Ljubljana from where he departed on April 22.

“I’ve had many unexpected events. That is why this trip has taken 14 days longer than initially planned,” Lenarcic said on Thursday on arrival at Saint-Nazaire.

The plane was equipped to measure air pollution over the North Pole – a hot-spot for global warming – and Lenarcic said all measurements had gone as planned.

While flying over the Arctic, an important indicator of global weather changes, Lenarcic was surprised to note “temperatures on the actual North Pole were much higher than in surrounding areas”.

An accomplished aerial photographer, he took pictures and measured levels of black carbon and light-absorbing particles at a height of 3000-4000 metres, an altitude rarely explored by scientists.

The particles – mostly the product of burning coal and other fossil fuels – absorb light from the sun and thus play a role in the complex equation of global warming.

The 15,600-kilometre scheme was initiated last year after Lenarcic succeeded in circling the world in the same aircraft, a Pipistrel Virus SW914, which weighs just 290 kilograms unladen.

A CFL player says a Vancouver woman killed in Mexico earlier this week will be remembered as a loving and generous person who loved animals.

Lynn Earle, 60, a retired West Vancouver police constable, was found stabbed to death in her home on Wednesday in Playa del Carmen.

Local police believe Earle was murdered as part of a robbery. The owner of Earles’ complex, Ted Rhodes, said she was robbed two weeks ago.

Chris Cvetkovic, who plays for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and runs his own animal charity, says he met Earle while volunteering at her animal rescue organization in Playa del Carmen.

He says he was shocked to hear the news of her death.

“She was just a really nice, genuine person who had a huge heart and for only knowing her for a week I can confidently say the world was a better place with her in it,” he said.

Earle was a former West Vancouver police officer who retired in 1996.

Mexican police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.

Three people were sent to the hospital after a portion of an Interstate 5 highway bridge in Mount Vernon, Wash., collapsed Thursday, dumping two vehicles and a travel trailer into the icy water, authorities said.

The three people were rescued from the Skagit River by first responders and taken to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.

Officials located a semi-truck believed to have hit several girders on the four-lane bridge just before the collapse. The driver remained on the scene and was cooperating with investigators, Washington State Patrol Chief John Batiste said at a press conference early this morning.

“We’re looking at the cause being an oversized, over-height vehicle, striking critical portions of this bridge, causing it to collapse,” said Travis Phelps of the Washington State Department of Transportation and Washington State Patrol.

The National Transportation Safety Board will arrive later today to investigate the collapse.

The collapse occurred on the portion of Interstate 5 over the Skagit River, about 60 miles north of Seattle.

Dan Sligh and his wife, Sally, were among the injured transported to Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon. Sligh told ABC News affiliate KOMO-TV that he was treated for cuts, bruises and a separated shoulder. Sligh’s wife has internal bleeding and will need to stay overnight.

Sligh was driving his truck with a travel trailer attached to it to begin a camping trip. Sligh said he was crossing the bridge behind the semi-truck when the accident occurred around 7 p.m. local time.

“I was commenting to my wife that it seemed that the load he was carrying was about 4 feet wider than the actual bridge,” he said.

The vehicles plunged about 40 feet from the bridge into the river, which set off a massive rescue operation.

“It was just a white flash and cold water,” Sligh said. “The Skagit is quite cold this time of year.”

Sligh said he acted quickly to rescue his wife, who was unresponsive after the collapse.

“Popped my shoulder back in so I could unbuckle everything so I could get over to her. Unbuckled her and pulled her into my side which had less water,” he said.

Helicopter footage from ABC News affiliate KOMO-TV showed several rescue boats in the Skagit River with several ambulances waiting on the shore.

“When you’re sitting down in the water and there’s all that mangled metal and bridge and you’re looking around kind of pinching yourself and realizing you’re lucky to be alive … it’s a pretty amazing day to tell you the truth,” Sligh said.

The bridge, built in 1955, was not considered structurally deficient but was listed as “functionally obsolete” – a category indicating an outdated design, such as having narrow shoulders and low clearance underneath, according to a database compiled by the Federal Highway Administration.

Federal records show it had a sufficiency rating of 57 out of 100, meaning it’s in need of repairs. The bridge was inspected twice last year, most recently in November, and repairs were made, according to Washington Transportation Secretary Lynn Peterson

Clean-up efforts will take several days to weeks, according to Phelps. The bridge sees 77,000 cars per day, and Phelps said they were expecting significant congestion until the bridge is fixed.

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee told reporters that one in five bridges in Washington have a rating of “functional obsolescence,” which he described as “troubling.” Inslee acknowledged the bridge collapse is going to cause a headache for tens of thousands of drivers.

“This is the aorta, the arterial of commerce for western Washington and we will ask all Washingtonians to help us avoid traffic problems,” he said.

I-5 is the longest interstate highway on the West Coast, running from the Mexican border all the way north to Canada.

Vasily Klyukin, 37, a Russian living in Monaco, said he had always wanted to go into space and was determined to win the trip, sold at an Aids research fundraiser at Cannes Film Festival.

“I want to be a bit daring,” said Mr Klyukin. “I will have to give up smoking now for sure!”

Bidding for the trip started at €1 million, with an unnamed mystery guest joining the Virgin Galactic space flight.

Sharon Stone, the hostess for the evening, cajoled the gathered glitterati, telling them: “You don’t get to go to outer space every day with a handsome movie star.”

Mr Klyukin will spend three days training in New Mexico before blast off.

After the successful bid from Mr Klyukin – who also bought a gold and diamond necklace for €400,000 (£343,000) – Stone announced two other tickets were available on the flight. They raised another €1.8m, helping to reach a total of €25m – more than double last year’s sum.

Other auction items included a Damien Hirst painting, an Annie Leibovitz family portrait, and a private performance from Simon Le Bon and John Taylor of Duran Duran.

The AMFAR gala is the biggest fundraising event at the world’s largest film festival. The benefit was first hosted by Elizabeth Taylor, and this year’s event was attended by Nicole Kidman, Kylie Minogue and Goldie Hawn while Shirley Bassey sang “Goldfinger”.

AN AUTHOR who pens stories the length of a sentence has scooped this year’s Man Booker International Prize.

American writer Lydia Davis has written some short stories of conventional length, but most range from one to three pages, while others are just a paragraph or sentence long.

Davis was picked from a short list of 10 names to win the fifth Man Booker International Prize, which is presented once every two years for “achievement in fiction on the world stage”.

The 60,000 pound ($93,000) prize is awarded to a living author for a body of work published originally in English or available in translation in English.

Davis’ stories are among the shortest ever written and she has been described as “the master of a literary form largely of her own invention”.

One of her shortest stories, A Double Negative, read simply: “At a certain point in her life, she realises it is not so much that she wants to have a child as that she does not want not to have a child, or not to have had a child.”

The author has said of her own writing: “I think as long as there’s a bit of narrative, or just a situation, I can get away with calling them stories.”

Davis, who lives in New York, was announced as the winner at a ceremony at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Professor Sir Christopher Ricks, chair of the judging panel and a literary critic and scholar, credited Davis with being able to “realise things down to the very word or syllable” and with “vigilance as to everybody’s impure motives and illusions of feeling.”

Previous recipients of the award have been Albanian author Ismail Kadare, Nigerian writer Chinua Achebe, Canadian Alice Munro and most recently, American author Philip Roth in 2011.

Davis’ work includes one novel, The End Of The Story (1995) and seven story collections including Break It Down (1986), Almost No Memory (1997), Samuel Johnson Is Indignant (2002) and Varieties of Disturbance (2007).

A MAN from rural France has impersonated South Korean Gangnam Style entertainer Psy at the Cannes Film Festival, eating, drinking and partying with the stars in Cannes for two days.

Psy “was spotted all over town, attending festival parties and events and posing for photos with festgoers and other celebrities”, The Hollywood Reporter said.

“But it turns out that the man was not Psy at all, but rather an imposter using his name and fame to get access to the festival.”

The double was dressed exactly like Psy, with his trademark jackets and round sunglasses.

He spent a day at the top-ranked Martinez beach restaurant and partied at night at the A-listers’ Carlton hotel.

Those who fell victim to the con included Skyfall actress Naomie Harris, who tweeted an image of herself posing with him at a party thrown by luxury jewellers Chopard.

Who was the trickster?

According to La Montagne, a daily newspaper in France’s remote Auvergne region, it was a 34-year-old Psy lookalike from Clermont-Ferrand called Denis Carre.

Carre, born in the small town of Blanzat, said he got hooked on Psy-chology last September when he was in a club in Dublin with his girlfriend, La Montagne reported.

“A crowd of people gathered around me, and the situation got totally out of control. We were only able to get out with the help of the bouncers. Then it happened again and again, to the point that the resemblance (with Psy) was causing problems in my private life,” he said.

The original Psy appears to have been unfazed by the identity theft. He tweeted: “Seems like there’s another ME at cannes… say Hi to him.”
