Police investigate after the shootings inside the Southern California Edison office in Irwindale.

December 16, 2011         6:15 pm

The gunman who shot four people — two of them fatally — before killing himself at a Southern California Edison office Friday appeared to target specific victims, a witness said.

The unidentified man, an Edison employee, began shooting after 1:30 p.m. at the sprawling Edison facility at 4910 Rivergrade Road. The witness told the Los Angeles Times that the gunman did not fire randomly.

“He told people to leave and he was very deliberate about who he shot,” said the employee, who spoke on the condition of annoymity. “He did not like management.”

One of the victims died at the scene and the other died on the way to the hospital. The conditions of the two other victims were not immediately available, said Capt. Michael Taylor of the Baldwin Park Police Department, which is helping with the investigation.

Edison International Chief Excutive Theodore F. Craver Jr. said all Southern California Edison buildings immediately were locked down after the shooting. He said the gunman was a Southern California Edison employee and the victims were three employees and a contract worker at the Irwindale information technology facility.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to families of the employees,” Craver said.

He said all but one of the victims in the deadly rampage were men. Craver said the Irwindale office was a secure facility with a special card needed to gain entry. Craver said the company was reaching out to the victims’ families, was trying to comfort employees and was continuing to assist law enforcement agencies.

“It is a very sad day for us,” he said. “… This company has been around for 125 years. It acts like a family.”

Taylor said SWAT officers scoured the building and rescued employees hunkered down in their locked offices. About 1,050 employees work in the three-story building, primarily in the company’s Information Technology and Transmission and Distribution divisions.

A source said the gunman worked at the Edison building as a systems analyst.

At least some of the victims were supervisors at Edison.

One employee told The Times that he and others locked the door to their office and put office equipment in front of it in hopes of preventing the gunman from getting in.

The shooting prompted a lockdown at several nearby schools as officials sought to determine whether the gunman was still alive.

Nordine Amrani

13 December 2011          21:52 ET

Police in Belgium are trying to determine what motivated a local man to open fire on a busy marketplace in Liege, killing at least four people.

Nearly 125 people were wounded, some critically, when 33-year-old Nordine Amrani fired bullets and hurled grenades before killing himself.

Police have said he was known to them for previous drugs and firearms offences and acted alone in the attack.

Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo said it had been “an isolated case”.

The city is to hold a minute’s silence and a vigil at midday on Wednesday, the AFP news agency reports.

An 17-month-old girl became the fourth victim late on Tuesday, dying in hospital despite undergoing hours of emergency treatment.

Belgium’s Home Affairs Minister Joelle Milquet said four people remained in a critical condition.

Warnings missed?

The BBC’s Matthew Price in Liege says the central Place Saint-Lambert, where the attack took place, has been re-opened to the public, but blood stains, shattered glass and bullet marks remains.

Officials have ruled out organised political terrorism or a known mental illness as Amrani’s motives but have yet to determine why he opened fire.

Belgium’s King Albert II and Queen Paola paid their respects at the square on Tuesday

They will now need to examine whether there was anything to indicate in advance that he might have posed a danger to the public, says our correspondent.

Amrani, a resident of Liege, had been jailed for 58 months in September 2008 for possessing firearms and drugs, media reports said.

Officials did not confirm this, but said they were aware he had spent some time in prison.

“At no moment in any of the judicial proceedings against him was there a sign of unbalance,” Daniele Reynders, the public prosecutor for Liege, told reporters.

Amrani is reported to have been on parole and on Tuesday, had been asked to attend a police station for an interview in connection with charges against him.

Instead, he took an assault rifle, revolver and hand grenades into the busy town centre square, close to the courthouse.

At around midday, he threw three grenades at people waiting for buses then opened fire, sending hundreds of people fleeing in panic.

“He wanted to hurt as many people as possible,” journalist Nicolas Gilenne told AFP. “I heard four explosions and shots during about 10 seconds.”

A 15-year-old boy died instantly, while a 17-year-old boy and a 75-year-old woman died later in hospital.

One official told AFP that a Christmas market was meant to be taking place in the square that day but its opening had been postponed because of bad weather.

“Otherwise many more would have died,” said the official.

Amrani died at the scene, but officials said he had not been shot by police. Some witnesses said he had shot himself in the head.

Mr di Rupo, who has only been in office since last week, said there were “no words to describe this tragedy”.

“The whole country shares the pain of the families affected. We share the shock of the population,” he said as he visited the square.

But he said: “This is an isolated case. This is not about terrorism.”

Belgium’s King Albert and Queen Paola II also visited Place Saint-Lambert on Tuesday evening to pay their respects.

Liege’s mayor Willy Demeyer, said the attack had “sown sorrow in the heart of the city”.

Police in Belgium have found a woman’s body in a shed belonging to a gunman who went on the rampage in the centre of Liege on Tuesday.

The body was found with a bullet wound to the head, say Belgian officials.

Nordine Amrani launched his attack with guns and hand grenades in a busy marketplace in Liege, killing three people there and himself.

Police say a 75 year-old woman earlier identified as one of the dead is still alive in hospital.

About 125 people were wounded, five of whom are in intensive care, including the woman.

The body found at the killer’s property was that of a cleaner, reported to be 45 years old, who worked for one of Amrani’s neighbours.

Also found in the shed were two weapons and a stockpile of ammunition, the public prosecutor, Daniele Reynders, told a news conference.

No message has been found from the attacker, she said.

Officials say the shed was used by Amrani to grow cannabis.

The victims

  • 15-year-old boy waiting for a bus who died instantly
  • 17-year-old male, reported to have just finished school exams, who died later in hospital
  • 17-month-old girl, who died overnight despite hours of emergency surgery
  • A cleaner, reported to be 45 years old, who was found shot in the head in Amrani’s shed

The authorities are trying to determine what motivated Amrani, a Belgian citizen, to go on his killing spree.

Police have said he was known to them for previous drugs and firearms offences and acted alone in the attack.

The city is to hold a minute’s silence and a vigil at midday on Wednesday, the AFP news agency reports.

Belgian public prosecutor Daniele Reynders: “Investigators discovered the body of a woman in the shed”

Amrani, a resident of Liege, had spent three years in jail for possessing firearms and drugs, said the prosecutor, Daniele Reynders. He was released in October 2010.

There were no medical reports suggesting any mental health problems, she said.

Amrani was on parole and on Tuesday had been asked to attend a police station for an interview in connection with charges against him.

Instead, he took an assault rifle, revolver and hand grenades into the busy town centre square, close to the courthouse.

At about midday, he threw three grenades at people waiting for buses then opened fire, sending hundreds of people fleeing in panic.

Gary Speed and wife Louise

28 November 2011      03:37 ET

Family, friends and the football world are trying to come to terms with the death of Wales manager Gary Speed.

Tributes continue to pour in after the 42-year-old was found dead at his home in Chester on Sunday morning. It is understood he was found hanged.

Former team-mate John Hartson said the death had left him “devastated”.

Fans paid tribute at Sunday’s Swansea-Aston Villa game when a minute’s silence turned into applause.

Figures across the world of football have expressed their shock at the death of Speed, who leaves a wife and two children.

Former Wales striker Hartson had been due to commentate for the BBC at Swansea’s Liberty Stadium but pulled out because he was so upset.

He wrote on Twitter that Speed’s death had left him totally devastated: “A son, father and a husband. I’ll miss you Speedo. Heartbroken,” he wrote.

Welsh international Craig Bellamy was withdrawn from the Liverpool squad for Sunday’s game against Chelsea by his manager Kenny Dalglish, who felt he was too upset to play.

Speed, born in Mancot, Flintshire, had appeared on BBC1’s Football Focus show on Saturday afternoon, just hours before his death.

Manchester United and England striker Michael Owen, who went to the same school in Flintshire, said Speed was a rare player who was respected by all supporters.

“Everyone knew that Gary Speed was a gentleman,” he said.

Everyone knew that Gary Speed was a gentleman… his footballing ability was without question but I would like to focus on him as a person”

Michael OwenManchester United

“His footballing ability was without question but I would like to focus on him as a person.

“He lived in my area only 10 or 15 miles away. The whole mood of Cheshire when the news broke was utter shock and disbelief. Devastated.”

Speed enjoyed a long and distinguished playing career which included periods with Everton, Newcastle, Bolton, Sheffield United and Leeds, where he won the First Division title in 1992, the year before it became the Premier League.

He was also Wales’ most capped outfield player, winning 85 international caps, and managed Sheffield United before becoming Wales boss in December 2010.

After a difficult start, Wales’ 4-1 friendly win over Norway on 12 November was his side’s third successive win.

‘Pinnacle of his career’

Laura McAllister, chair of Sport Wales and a former Wales women’s international, said: “I think he was just a phenomenal advert and a phenomenal model really for professionals now.

Wales manager Gary Speed shouts out instructions during the 4-1 friendly win over Norway
Gary Speed had said he was satisfied with his first 10 games in charge of Wales

“He had moulded a team and that’s his legacy – he moulded a team in his own image.

“He would say they are more talented than him but they were players that wanted to put on the red shirt and that wanted to represent their country and that’s a fantastic tribute to his managerial skills.”

Former Wales manager Bobby Gould said Speed had so much left to offer and, as manager of his country, was at the “pinnacle of his career”.

“I think it’s shock really now. I’ve been awake since half past five and you chew over things in your mind and you get up and think ‘what will today bring?’ ” he said.

“I wouldn’t like to experience another day like yesterday.”

Manchester United and Wales star Ryan Giggs said Speed, who was awarded the MBE in the 2010 Birthday Honours for his services to the game, was “one of the nicest men in football”.

Cheshire Police said on Sunday that Speed’s body was discovered at his home in Huntington, on the outskirts of Chester.

Officers said there were no suspicious circumstances.

Flashing signs on the highways in eastern Ohio warned motorists Wednesday: Exotic animals on the loose. Call 911.

Schools shuttered and some frightened residents said they were hunkering down in their homes as sheriff’s deputies hunted lions, tigers, leopards and grizzly bears that escaped from a preserve after the death of the owner.

Police have not yet said how Terry Thompson died, but Zanesville Mayor Howard Zwelling told CNN Wednesday that Thompson freed the animals from their pens and then shot himself.

Thompson owned 48 exotic animals. About 30 to 35 of them had been found, said Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz. Those that had escaped from their pens were put down.

Zwelling said he received calls from people who were concerned that the animals had been killed. He said authorities were trying to use tranquilizers whenever possible to save their lives.

Sheriff’s deputies used night vision equipment until daylight Wednesday to continue their search, hampered by rain. Lutz said deputies, armed with shotguns, were patrolling areas in pickup trucks.

“There are still thought to be several dangerous animals on the loose, creating a public safety threat.”

The community was in a state of “shock and surprise,” said Tom Warne, owner of Donald’s Donuts and a lifelong resident of the city of Zanesville.

“It’s the craziest sort of thing,” he said.

Warne said he had met Thompson a few times. He used to patronize the doughnut shop at one time.

Thompson had his run-ins with the law. He pleaded guilty earlier this year to federal charges of possessing illegal firearms, including five fully automatic firearms, and had just been released from prison.

Thompson’s property is about two miles outside Zanesville, Zwelling said. Authorities said they were receiving reports of animal sightings by residents. Columbus Zoo director emeritus Jack Hanna drove into Zanesville overnight to assist in the search.

But Hanna warned that the search was dangerous and human life came first.

“We’re trying our best to make sure no one is hurt doing this,” he said.

He said the animals were probably hiding out from the rain, but his advice to anyone who encounters an animal is this: Don’t run. Just scream.

In nearby Licking County, Sheriff Randy Thorp said he has activated the county SWAT team “who will be equipped with night vision and the necessary weapons to deal with any encounters with such animals.”

The menagerie of about 48 animals on the loose also includes wolves, giraffes and camels. Commuters reported seeing bears and wolves along Interstate 70.

PHOTO: Jamey Rodemeyer, 14, was found dead outside his home of an apparent suicide.

September 21, 2011    4:23 pm

Five months ago, Jamey Rodemeyer, a Buffalo junior high school student, got on his webcam and created a video urging other gay teenagers to remain hopeful in the face of bullying.

The 14-year-old spoke of coming out as bisexual and enduring taunts and slurs at school. And he described, in at times desperate tones, rejection and ridicule from other teenagers.

Jamey made the video as part of the It Gets Better project, a campaign that was started last fall to give hope to bullied gay teenagers. “All you have to do is hold your head up and you’ll go far,” he said. “Just love yourself and you’re set. … It gets better.”

But for Jamey, the struggle apparently was just too much. This week his parents announced that their son was found dead, an apparent suicide. He didn’t leave a note, but his parents said he had endured “constant taunting, from the same people over and over.” They added that his school had intervened to help, and that Jamey appeared to be benefiting from counseling.

News that a bullied teenager had succumbed to the very pressures he urged others to resist came as a shock to supporters of the It Gets Better project. And it provided a sobering reminder that bullied teenagers who appear to be adjusting may still be in trouble.

Dan Savage, the advice columnist and co-founder of It Gets Better, noted on his blog on Tuesday that Jamey’s death showed that “sometimes, the damage done by hate and by haters is simply too great.”

It sounds like Jamey had help — he was seeing a therapist and a social worker and his family was supportive — but it wasn’t enough. Whatever help Jamey was getting clearly wasn’t enough to counteract the hatred and abuse that he had endured since the fifth grade, according to reports, or Jamey’s fears of having to face down a whole new set of bullies when he started high school next year.

As suicides among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender teenagers have gotten more attention in the past year, researchers have sought to identify the factors that play the largest role. One study published in the journal Pediatrics in May, which looked at nearly 32,000 teenagers in 34 counties across Oregon, found that gay and bisexual teenagers were significantly more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers. The risk of an attempt was 20 percent greater among gay teenagers who lacked supportive social surroundings, like schools with gay-straight alliance groups or school policies that specifically protected gay, lesbian and bisexual students.

An editorial accompanying the study said the findings pointed to the need for schools to adopt policies that create “more supportive and inclusive surroundings.

“By encouraging more positive environments,” the report stated, “such policies could help reduce the risk of suicide attempts not only among LGB students, but also among heterosexual students.”

Watch Jamey’s It Gets Better video above.

A nine-year-old boy in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district has allegedly committed suicide, frustrated by his inability to qualify for a television dance show. Sandip Mondol, a class 5 student of the city, was found hanging from the ceiling of his house in Kasba area by his father Debkumar Mondal on Friday evening, the police said on Saturday.

He was alone at home at the time of the incident. His father, an electrician, and mother Swapna Mondal, a domestic help, had gone out to work. Sandip’s elder brother was also away, visiting their uncle in Garia.

Debkumar found Sandip’s body when he returned around 7 pm, the police said. Initial investigation showed the boy had committed suicide.

“We are, however, waiting for the postmortem examination report, after which we would be able to come to a conclusion,” said Murlidhar, additional superintendent of police (industrial), South 24 Parganas.

Neighbours said Sandip used to be an active boy, but he had started keeping to himself after failing to enter a dance show on a Bengali entertainment channel.

“He used to talk less and even avoid people. The failure had affected him so much that his performance at a recent stage show at Basirhat in North 24 Parganas was below par,” said Shyco Manna, secretary of a local club.

Sandip was due to perform at a stage show near Garia on Friday evening. Neighbours said they had seen him practising alone at a local park in the afternoon.

The television was switched on in the room where Sandip was found dead. The police said a reality show being aired in the evening may have been the immediate trigger for the suicide.

This is not the first time when a reality television show has had a debilitating effect on a child in West Bengal. In June 2008, 16-year-old Shinjini Sengupta suffered paralysis after she was rebuked by the judges of a dance show on a Bengali TV channel.

An 9-year-old Indian boy hanged himself after he was rejected in auditions for several television dance shows, news reports said Sunday.

Sandip Mondal, had auditioned for several television reality dance shows, but failed to make the cut, the Indian Express newspaper reported.

The son of a small DVD and CD rental shop-owner in the eastern city of Kolkata, Mondal had never received any formal dance training as his parents were not well-off.

When the boy asked his mother for money to go to yet another audition on Friday, she refused, saying they could not afford it and left for work, the Indian Express reported.

When the mother returned in the evening, she found her son’s body hanging from the ceiling.

‘Sandip learned to dance by watching TV. In the last few months, he auditioned for five to six reality shows but was not selected … He was depressed as we were told by his neighbours,’ a local police official was quoted as saying.

Several entertainment channels in India run competitive dance shows where the participants are often as young as 5 or 6 years old.

An 11-year-old girl from Mumbai, who had appeared on several television dance shows, allegedly committed suicide in January after her parents pulled her out of dance school as they felt it was affecting her schoolwork.

Psychiatrists have warned that such exposure to limelight and long hours of work and practice at an early age could be harmful for children.

India’s National Commission for Protection of Child Rights has suggested a ban on contestants aged under 16 in such shows.

SECOND UPDATE:

MANILA, Philippines – Controversial former military chief and Energy Secretary Angelo T. Reyes died Tuesday morning in an apparent suicide inside the Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina City, police said.

Supt. Alfredo M. Calama-an, Eastern Police District – District Operations and Plans Divisions chief, said the 65-year-old Reyes reportedly shot himself in the chest using a Caliber .45 pistol which pierced through his heart.

He said Reyes, who was with his two sons, an aide and driver, visiting his mother’s grave at the memorial park Tuesday, was immediately taken to the Quirino Labor Memorial Hospital, where he was declared dead at about 8:32 a.m. by attending doctors.

Police Senior Supt. Francisco Soria Manalo, EPD district director, said they will still wait for the autopsy report to be provided by the Philippine National Police-Crime Laboratory regarding Reyes’ death before they can make any statement about it.

He added that Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) from the EPD was still at the scene as of press time conducting an investigation.

“We are still waiting for the report. As soon as we have it, we will provide the details (surrounding his death),” Manalo told TEMPO/Manila Bulletin in an interview.

Manalo, who went to the scene together with Superintendent Romeo  Magsalos, Marikina Police Office chief, said that Reyes visited his mother’s grave to pay his respects to her at about 7 a.m.

According to initial investigation, the former military chief then asked his sons, his aide and bodyguard to leave him for a while. A few seconds later, a gun shot was then heard with Reyes falling to the ground with blood all over him.

According to witnesses, Reyes was holding a book on Donald Trump titled “Trump: The Art of the Deal,” before allegedly committing suicide.

Reyes, it was recalled, became AFP chief of staff from 1999 to 2001. Shortly after his retirement from the military service in March 1, 2001, he was appointed as Defense Secretary by then former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Reyes, also a key figure during the People Power 2 that toppled former President Joseph Ejercito Estrada from power in January 2001, has been in the hot seat as of late due to allegations that received P50 million in “send-off” money after he retired from the AFP as claimed by retired Lt. Col. George Rabusa.

Reyes, a graduate of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Class 1966, is married to Teresita P. Reyes with whom he has five sons, Pablo, Angelito, Marc, Carlo and Judd.
