Singer-songwriter Dobie Gray, who had a huge hit in 1973 withDrift Away, died Tuesday. He was 71.
Nashville’s News Channel 5 first reported the death Tuesday night, which was confirmed on Gray’s personal website. A cause of death was not given.
Gray was born near Houston in 1940. He had an early hit in 1965 with The In-Crowd, but it would be eight years before he would enjoy his biggest success with Drift Away. The song sold millions of copies and reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1973.
In 2003, Gray recorded a version of Drift Away with Uncle Kracker that spent 28 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard‘s adult contemporary chart.
“My heart goes out to Dobie’s family this evening. RIP Dobie Gray. Thank you for the music. You will not be forgotten,”Uncle Kracker wrote on Twitter after learning of Gray’s death.
According to his personal website, Gray wrote songs for such diverse artists as Ray Charles, Johnny Mathis, George Jones, Etta James, Nina Simone, Julio Iglesias and John Denver.
