In 2003, the young American climber Aron Ralston made an incredible decision to cut his own arm off with a penknife.
He was hiking in the Blue John Canyon in Utah when a dislodged boulder landed on his right arm and trapped him for five days.
27-year-old Aron was an experienced climber who was used to extreme conditions.
He said that in comparison with his usual adventures, he had expected this fateful trip to be the equivalent of ‘a walk in the park’.
He tried different techniques to free himself, like chipping away at the rock and rigging up a pulley system in an attempt to lift it, but soon realised there was little chance of being rescued and that he would die if he did not perform the excruciating amputation.
“I was standing in my grave”
Over his five nights alone in the canyon he recorded goodbye messages to his friends and family on a video camera, believing he was going to die. He even etched his own epitaph and death date on the rock.
“Beautiful pain”
But on the final night after having a vision of interacting with a little boy he believed to be his ‘future son’, Aron found a way to break his own bones and the strength to endure the amputation.
He then had to negotiate a 65 foot drop and find help.
The story of his extraordinary survival has now been made into a Hollywood movie, directed by Danny Boyle, who won an Oscar for his film Slumdog Millionaire.
The movie is called 127 Hours, reflecting the length of time that Aron spent alone in the canyon before making his miraculous escape.
Aron spoke to Outlook’s Matthew Bannister from his home town of Boulder Colorado and told him, in detail, all about his extraordinary story of survival.
