BYU’s Ezekiel “Ziggy” Ansah may be the hottest prospect in the NFL Draft. He is fast, tall, and athletic, yet he is a risk that teams are going to have to decide if its worth it.

Ansah is freak of an athlete. He is 6’5″, and 274 pounds with an arm length of 34 and five-eighths, and a hand length of 10 inches. Ansah even runs like a track athlete, as in 2010, he walked-on to the BYU track team and ran 21.9 seconds in the 200-meter dash. He was also cut twice from the BYU basketball team.

Ansah is a projected first-round draft pick.

NFL scout and executive Phil Savage says, “I’m thinking that maybe even the top five with the way teams are so desperate to adjust to what they’re doing for all these read-option quarterbacks. You are going to need guys on the defensive line who can chase those guys down.”

CBS Sports NFL Draft expert Rob Rang says, “Ansah compares to Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, New York Giants. Ansah is not the same terror-off-the-edge pass-rusher that Pierre-Paul was coming out of South Florida, but he’s similarly gifted and plays with greater commitment to the run. Like there was with Pierre-Paul, there is some risk factor with Ansah, but his upside is through the roof.”

Ansah finished 2012 with 62 total tackles, 13 tackles for a loss, 4.5 sacks, one interception, and nine pass defenses.

In the Senior Bowl, Ansah shined, recording seven tackles, including three and a half for loss (one and a half for sacks), and a forced fumble off Syracuse quarterback Ryan Nassib.

Ansah has played several positions while at BYU, a stand-up rush linebacker, a defensive end, and nose guard. Ansah is a type of player that can create mismatches and has flexibility.

Perhaps, the biggest questions surrounding Ansah, is his experience. Coming into 2012, he had just zero career starts and 10 total tackles.

Ohio State junior DT Johnathan Hankins will enter the 2013 NFL Draft.

The announcement is not surprising, as Hankins has the “potential” to be the best defensive player in this class. The junior is thickly built with strength to anchor, and even flashes quick feet to disrupt the backfield. However, the issue with Hankins is inconsistency and the mammoth defensive tackle vanished at times this season. He is expected to be a first-round pick, but there are other, safer options.

CBS Sports’ Dane Brugler stated that his notes on Ohio State junior DT Johnathan Hankins started at “glowing” and now are “extremely average.”

This sums up Hankins’ 2012 season very well, as many (including us) were very impressed with the Buckeye’s sophomore tape. However, this season, Hankins has disappeared far too often and it is obvious his motor drains in the late stages of games. With Star Lotulelei topping the defensive tackle list, Hankins should fear Jesse Williams and Sheldon Richardson passing him in rankings. Nov 28 – 9:56 AM

tVa Scouting Report:

Hankins is a monster of a man, one of the widest nose tackles in college football. That natural size combined with his lower body strength and body control allows him to be at worst an immovable object for offenses to double teams. His ability to keep his feet and drive down the playside part of the line naturally disrupts both zone and man blocking schemes. His ability as a rusher is still raw, but for now, his power and burst off the line are enough to get into the backfield initially and win power battles to make plays in the backfield.
NFL coaches are going to love Hankins’ versatility. He has played all over the defensive line. Hankins has lined up as a three-technique, on the outside shoulder of the guard; a two-gap defensive tackle technique; a defensive end; and the zero-technique – as a nose tackle above the center.  This means he could be an ideal fit for the Vikings at zero-technique nose tackle opposite of Kevin Williams.  Letroy Guion has been disappointing and Fred Evans has been okay overall.  Both players are due increased salary bumps this offseason so a better player may be brought in to replace them.  Hankins carries a top 15 grade so he might not be available but if he is he could be plugged in as a day one starter for the Vikings.

Defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson was one of the most-hyped players to come through the Missouri Tigers program in the last few years. He was recruited by the Tigers of his home state, but started his collegiate career at College of the Sequoias, a junior college in Visalia, California. He made his return to his home state to make his debut with Mizzou in 2011, when he racked up 37 tackles, eight tackles for loss and two sacks in only eight games, two of which he started.

He moved into a starting position in 2012 and finished the season with 75 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, three forced fumbles, three batted passes, a blocked kick and he topped it all off with a 60-yard fumble return. After his impressive season, he was named to the 2012 All SEC First Team, becoming Missouri’s first player to win the honor.

Many mock drafts have Richardson being selected in the first round, as he could add a significant burst to a team looking to boost the production of their defensive line. The 6’4, 295-pound defensive tackle not only shows an ability to stop the run, but to rush the passer as well and has found success playing against some of college football’s best offensive lines in the SEC.

He is No. 8 on SB Nation’s big board and according to his SB Nation scouting report, he has the potential to be a top-10 pick.

Richardson has an ideal skill set to make a quick impact in the NFL. He’s going to blow people away at February’s combine with his speed and agility at 300 pounds. Richardson plays defensive tackle with a relentless attitude and a mean streak. He should find a home in the first round with his draft ceiling being the first ten picks.

Pros:

  • Richardson has the size to be a dominant defensive tackle in the NFL
  • His size comes along with incredible speed and quickness considering the weight he’s moving
  • He’s athletic enough that Missouri coaches asked him to drop back in pass coverage occasionally
  • He’s instinctive enough to accurately sniff out screens and draws
  • Explodes into tackles
  • Plays best against some of the toughest competition

Cons:

  • Only had one dominant season at FBS level
  • Sometimes stands up and loses leverage against blockers
  • Struggled academically throughout his college career
  • Underwent shoulder surgery after the 2011 season
  • Seems to run his mouth a bit too much in interviews

Richardson would likely fit best in a 4-3 defensive scheme where he could do the most damage, especially when it comes to providing pressure on the quarterback from the middle of the line. Some teams that may be interested in the Missouri defensive tackle are the Titans or Seahawks, who are likely looking for depth on the line.

From DraftBreakdown.com:

Quotables

– From ESPN’s Todd McShay:

– Richardson enjoys talking to the media, and had some interesting comments after Missouri’s season-opening win, before his team’s game against Georgia:

“If we execute,” he added, “nobody in this league can touch us. Period.”

On Georgia football: its “like watching Big Ten football. It’s old man football.”

Richardson was banned from talking to the press for a month by coaches after the incident.

January 24, 2013               8:00am

Many defenses in the NFL covet hybrid defenders who can both attack the quarterback and defend receivers in space, and Oregon Ducks senior defensive end Dion Jordan could turn out being a good fit with the right team in the 2013 NFL Draft.

In 2012, Jordan tallied 44 tackles (10.5 of those going for a loss), as well as five sacks with one interception and three forced fumbles. After suffering a shoulder injury late in the season, the 6’7, 241-pounder will likely miss this week’s Senior Bowl. Jordan is listed as the 11th-best prospect on SB Nation’s big board of 100 players and is the third-best defensive end in the draft.

SB Nation’s complete Big Board of 100 prospects

Pros:

– In Matthew Fairburn of SB Nation’s scouting report, he notes that Jordan “moves like a safety,” while adding that the defensive end covered anyone from tight ends to slot receivers, a pretty strong indicator of the many ways that NFL teams could utilize his abilities.

– Potential. As Fairburn writes, defensive coordinators could really let loose in unleashing Jordan’s talent on the NFL.

– CBSSports.com’s Dane Brugler notes that, for all his versatility in coverage, his quick burst around offensive linemen could make him primarily a strong pass-rushing threat.

From DraftBreakdown.com, here’s Jordan against Arizona State, in which he totaled five tackles and 2.0 sacks:

Cons:

– NFL.com’s profile gives Jordan the ‘tweener’ label that can sometimes keep players off the field, though it’s still hard to imagine the team drafting him would not have a plan of some sort in place.

– Because of his basketball player-like build, NFL.com also notes that it probably wouldn’t hurt for Jordan to add upper-body strength, especially for pass-rushing.

– Finishing tackles. Fairburn writes that “a disappointing number of tackles slipped through his arms this season,” which definitely doesn’t sound good.

NFL.com compares Jordan to former San Francisco 49er Julian Peterson, while Fairburn goes with a more current Niner in Aldon Smith, though there’s a gap between draft prospect Smith and draft prospect Jordan. Either way, it’s not hard to see the upside in Jordan, especially for a 3-4 defense or any team looking for a faster, sleeker upgrade to their outside linebacking and/or defensive end units. In his most recent mock draft from Jan. 21, Fairburn thinks Jordan will fall to No. 12 overall and the Miami Dolphins, citing the Too Much Talent To Pass Up category of draft strategy:

The Dolphins have been linked to wide receivers so far in the pre-draft process. With Brian Hartline as the team’s best weapon in the passing game, young quarterback Ryan Tannehill clearly needs more to work with.

But Dion Jordan is a big time talent that doesn’t normally make it out of the top 10 picks. His shoulder injury will cause him to slide, but Jordan has a combination of pass rush and cover skills that NFL teams will love.

Quotables

From SB Nation’s Matthew Fairburn:

From NFLDraftScout.com’s Dane Brugler:

Jordan has rare athleticism for his size, showing loose hips and smooth footwork to move naturally in any direction. He looks like a basketball small forward in football pads with fluid athleticism for a player with his height and length.

Listed at 6-7 and 240 pounds, Jordan needs to continue to add weight and fill out his frame, lacking much of a power element to his game. But as a pass rusher, he has a quick first step with acceleration to beat blockers and flatten out to close on the quarterback.

College Stats/Info

Jordan, who played tight end up until spring of 2010, made first team all-PAC-12 both of his seasons as a starter. He had 7.5 sacks as a junior and five more as a senior. Here’s a full look at his stats – note the two 2-point conversions, one of which came in the Fiesta Bowl to give his team an 8-0 lead. He’s got a unique enough skill set to allow him to do lots of things like that, often lining up on slot receivers even though he’s a defensive lineman.

Recent News

– Cowboys blog Blogging the Boys had lots of good things to say about Jordan, hoping he falls to them at No. 18.

Jordan is a freak athlete that has all of the physical skills to become a great player in the NFL. If the Cowboys find themselves on the clock with Jordan available, then they will need to consider it. The pass rush has been in a decline the past two seasons, and they need to add more sizzle.

The emphasis on the passing game in the NFL has led scouts to value quarterbacks, left tackles, defensive end/pass rushers and cornerbacks at a premium, but the best prospect available in the 2013 NFL Draft is an offensive guard:  Chance Warmack.

The Alabama standout was the most dominant player in the college game, displaying a combination of strength, power and athleticism that is uncommon at the position. He complements those superior physical traits with refined technical skills that enable him to control elite defensive tackles in the trenches.

Warmack, who measures 6-foot-4 and weighs 320 pounds, is an exceptional drive blocker adept at moving defenders off the ball. His ability to re-establish the line of scrimmage can create huge lanes for runners on power plays directed between the tackles. Additionally, Warmack displayed the agility, balance and body control to effectively block on the move on pulls or traps. Most NFL offenses feature a variation of the “power-O”; Warmack’s game would fit seamlessly into every offensive system, and he would upgrade any offensive lineup.

While some observers will take umbrage with my selection of an offensive guard as the best prospect in this class, I believe a prospect with a consistent game and a laundry list of blue-chip characteristics will always shine as a pro.

Warmack displayed those traits against competition in the SEC — the premier conference in college football. I view him as an immediate difference-maker with the potential to rate as one of the best at his position in a year or so. That’s exactly what you would expect from the top player in the draft.

Maybe it was a good thing LaMichael James was buried on the 49ers’ depth chart.

Maybe it was good he had to wait his turn, learn his lessons and watch the rest of the team do battle with the NFL for the first three-quarters of the season.

James, after all, is the 49ers’ freshest weapon as they head into Super Bowl XLVII Sunday against the Ravens.

When he comes into the game for San Francisco, he’ll have fresh legs and a desire to show what he can do after patiently awaiting his chance.

“I had a lot to learn,” James told the media this week. “I’m still learning. I’m very blessed to be in the situation I’m in.”

James began the season behind starting running back Frank Gore and No. 2 Kendall Hunter. Plus, the 49ers had signed free-agent Brandon Jacobs in the off-season and veteran Anthony Dixon also was in the mix.

But after the second-round pick from Oregon sat out the first 12 games, he’s flashed his game-breaking speed and quickness since Hunter was lost with an injury and Jacobs became a non-factor.

In the final four regular-season games, James carried 27 times for 125 yards (a 4.6-yard average) and had three catches for 29 yards. In addition, it was his long kickoff return late in a December game against the Patriots that set up the 49ers for a 41-34 win.

In two playoff games he’s averaged 6.9 yards per carry (55 yards on eight attempts), caught two passes for 11 yards and scored his first professional touchdown in the NFC Championship Game victory over the Falcons on a slashing 15-yard run off right tackle.

The rookie says it took him awhile to completely absorb the 49ers playbook and feel comfortable, so sitting and waiting for his chance wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. Then, when he did get his chance, quarterback Colin Kaepernick was leading the offense and the team was running more Pistol and read-option plays and James – who played in a read-option system at Oregon – was a perfect fit.

Now James has given the 49ers some quick, fresh legs and an extra burst of speed when he comes in for Gore.

“Once he started getting comfortable, we saw a dynamic football player,” 49ers safety Donte Whitner told the Associated Press. “It’s a testament to him to be able to sit on the sideline and be on the developmental squad, as we like to call it, here for so long and actually knowing you can play football.”

Said head coach Jim Harbaugh: “From the first time he stepped on the field, he’s been dynamic.”

After scoring his first pro TD vs. the Falcons, James was asked what that meant to him.

“I just think about the win,” James told 49ers.com. “Anything to help the team win, I’m all for it. Just putting points on the board to help the team win made me excited, made me happy. I really didn’t think about it too much, I just wanted to win the game.”

With Kaepernick, Gore and James, the 49ers’ rushing attack offers three very fast, elusive runners. San Francisco offensive coordinator Greg Roman said this week that James’ talent and familiarity with the entire offense and the read-option in particular gives the Niners one more excellent offensive weapon.

“The bottom line is LaMichael’s a football player,” Roman said. “Anything football is not foreign to him. So while he wasn’t active earlier in the year, he gave our defense a great look in practice, which is very, very important to get the team ready.

“He just continued to make strides in understanding the entire offense and I think he’s looked pretty good out there.”

Green just caught his third TD on a 49-yard bomb from Andrew Luck. He now has 6 receptions for 95 yards (15.8) on just 7 targets.

During the annual NFL Pro Bowl in Honolulu tonight, Bengals receiver A.J. Green set a franchise record with his third touchdown in two Pro Bowls. The previous record for most touchdowns all-time in the Pro Bowl was held by Chad Johnson (2) and T.J. Houshmandzadeh.

His first came on a 6-yard pass from Broncos QB and future hall-of-famer Peyton Manning during the first-quarter.

His second came in the fourth-quarter on a 4-yard jump-ball that Colts QB Andrew Luck put just enough air under for Green to go up and snatch it over Bears cornerback Tim Jennings.

While the Pro Bowl has become nothing more than a glorified game of flag-football, it’s still a nice honor for Green to capture in just his second year in the NFL, and there will undoubtedly be many more to come.
