While Camile was demanding attention one person who will not be interested in her antics is her ex-husband Kelsey.

After seeing a photograph of his ex-wife the Frasier star stormed out of the CNN building leaving host Piers Morgan shocked, and more importantly without a guest to interview for his show.

Piers told fans about Kelsey’s runner tweeting: ‘Kelsey Grammer was supposed to be on my show now but ran out of the building. Strange.’

‘Kelsey saw a photo of his ex wife Camille in the open to our show and legged it. Extraordinary. Never had this happen before.’

Piers said that he and the 57-year-old Boss star had already chatted and all seemed well.’

Despite his apparent reticence, Kelsey has previously been only too happy to discuss his ex wife, who stars in the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.

He has taken swipes at the 44-year-old in interviews, revealing that they hadn’t had sex for ‘ a decade’ before their split.

Kelsey is now married to 29-year-old Katye Walsh, who is the mother of his newborn daughter Faith.

The three-time divorced Frasier star never signed a prenuptial agreement with his ex-wife of 13 years, and she stands to make a fortune – $30 million – in the yet to be agreed settlement.

Canadian actor Cory Monteith, 31-year-old heart throb of Fox’s musical-comedy television series “Glee”, was found dead on Saturday in his Vancouver hotel room, police said.

Police and paramedics found no signs of foul play and the cause of death was not immediately apparent, British Columbia Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe told reporters at a news conference.

Monteith had talked about his problems with substance abuse.

In response to a question about whether Monteith died of a drug overdose, Vancouver Police Department acting chief Doug LePard said he would “not discuss anything that we might have found in the room at this time”.

“We only notified family members about an hour ago, so we haven’t even been able to have those conversations with them,” he said.

Monteith, whose “Glee” character Finn Hudson was a high school football player turned enthusiastic glee club – or musical group – singer, was treated at a rehabilitation facility for an unspecified substance addiction this year.

The actor, who grew up in Victoria, British Columbia, told Parade magazine in 2011 about what he called a serious drug problem during his teenage years, and was first treated for addiction at 19.

Other people were in Monteith’s Pacific Rim Hotel room on Friday night but evidence, including fob key entries, indicated he returned to his room by himself early on Saturday and was alone when he died, police said. He was due to check out of the hotel that day.

Monteith had been dead for several hours when his body was discovered by police and paramedics answering an emergency call, Lapointe said.

“The death of a young person is a tragedy for their family, friends and community,” Lapointe said. “A sudden death is more shocking and our hearts go out to the family and friends who are mourning the loss of this young man.”

Monteith began his career in a number of small roles leading up to a recurring part between 2006 and 2007 in the ABC Family science-fiction drama “Kyle XY” and another role around the same time on the MTV series “Kaya”.

But “Glee,” a show set in the small town of Lima, Ohio, was Monteith’s breakthrough role. A big part of the show was his character’s on-again-off-again romance with glee club star Rachel Berry, an aspiring entertainer played by Lea Michele.

Monteith and Michele followed in the footsteps of their fictional counterparts by dating in real life.

In recent episodes of the series, Rachel had jetted off to attend college in New York while Finn stayed in Lima, where he worked at his father’s auto repair shop and later got involved in helping lead his former school’s glee club.

In a statement on their “Glee” Twitter page, the executive producers of the show and Fox said they were “deeply saddened by this tragic news”.

“Cory was an exceptional talent and an even more exceptional person,” the Twitter message said. “He was a true joy to work with and we will all miss him tremendously. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones.”

Singer and former “Glee” actress Kristin Chenoweth said in a message on Twitter shortly after the police news conference, “You will be loved. Always.”

An autopsy was set for Monday, LePard said.

The Quebec coroner’s office says it has confirmed the identity of another seven victims in Lac-Mégantic, raising the total number of known victims to eight.

The victims’ families are being notified and the identities of the deceased will be made public in 24 hours, coroner’s office spokesperson Geneviève Guilbault said at a news conference Friday afternoon.

Sûreté du Québec Insp. Michel Forget said an additional four people have been confirmed dead after the July 6 derailment and explosion of a runaway train carrying oil, raising the total number of deceased to 28, and another 22 presumed dead.

Forget said because of gas fumes emanating from contaminated soil, police investigators had to change their search area. He said they are ventilating the zone before returning to the contaminated area.

The investigation into the cause of the massive train derailment in the Quebec town will likely take months, the Transportation Safety Board said Friday.

“We will ensure Canadians get the answers they need,” TSB chair Wendy A. Tadros said at a press conference in the town. “We have made this investigation absolutely our top priority.”

“We need to find the facts, stick to these facts and speak to these facts only when we know for sure,” Tadros said. “It will be a complex investigation. It will be intensive. It will take months or more.”

Still waiting for full access to site

TSB investigators have not yet gained access to the entire derailment site, because police and the coroner’s office have not completed their work and the area is still contaminated and not secure, the TSB officials said.

“We have to make sure we get in there and document that evidence, but we have to keep our employees safe,” Tadros said.

As part of the TSB investigation, the federal agency will be looking at the gradient of the railway track, the weight of the train and the number of brakes that were deployed at the time of the accident.

Investigators will use a method called photogrammetry to take pictures of the accident site from various angles and construct a 3D model of the site in order to determine what caused the oil tank cars to start rolling down the track and into the town of 6,000.

“We have investigated hundreds and hundreds of rail accidents and many runaways,” Tadros said. “The science is the same, and the TSB has to follow the science and be careful not draw any premature conclusions.…

“If along the way, we discover urgent safety issues, we will act quickly to make those known to Transport Canada and the railway industry, so they can take action immediately.”

‘Never comes down to one individual’

When asked whether the TSB investigation will be focusing on the engineer who was in charge of deploying the train’s brakes and who left the train unattended as per company practice during a scheduled shift change, Tadros said the agency will be speaking to all individuals who had anything to do with the train and with the company.

“No accident is ever caused by one thing,” she said. “It is always a series of things and always involves the organization and the way that they operate. It never comes down to one individual.”

But the CEO of the railway’s parent company, Edward Burkhardt, blamed the engineer Tom Harding for failing to set the brakes properly.

Harding was away from the train when it began rolling downhill toward the town, eventually going off the tracks and setting off a series of massive explosions and fires. The owner of the train’s operator, Montreal, Maine and Atlantic Railway, has speculated that the engineer might have not set enough handbrakes before he left the train.

Guy Farrell, spokesperson for the United Steelworkers Union, spoke with CBC News Friday, claiming that Burkhardt was trying to use Harding as a scapegoat.

Farrell would not comment on the specifics of the derailment, pending multiple investigations but added that as far as the union is aware, Harding’s has “a clean record” and is “one of the most experienced engineers for MMA.”

The TSB officials said Friday that they will be looking at whether MMA and its parent company, Chicago-based Rail World Inc., met all necessary safety standards and will be releasing the safety records of all major rail companies and short-rail companies under federal jurisdiction on the TSB website. Some of those statistics have already been posted and can be viewed here.

Public inquiry possible

The TSB investigation is separate from the police investigation and any potential provincial public inquiry that could take place.

Quebec Transportation Minister Sylvain Gaudreault said at a press conference in Lac-Mégantic Friday that his government has not ruled out a public inquiry.

He also said that moving the railway tracks out of town is a possibility but that authorities have to consider the impact such a move would have on the town’s economy.

MMA’s Lac-Mégantic route was part of a vast expansion in rail shipments of crude oil throughout North America that has occurred as oil output has soared in Canada and North Dakota and pipelines have run out of space.

“Everything is on the table,” Gaudreault said. “[But] we understand that having rail tracks in a town like this also helps develop the town. We shouldn’t penalize the town twice.”

Gaudreault was in Lac-Mégantic to show solidarity with residents and assure Mayor Colette Roy-Laroche of his “unconditional support,” he said.

He met with local officials to review the status of the town’s emergency plan and discuss how the $60 million in aid the provincial government has promised will be spent. He also met with residents who were forced out of their homes as a result of the disaster and are staying in a shelter set up at a local high school.

“We have to move step by step,” Gaudreault said. “I met people in the high school who are still wondering where to find food. We have to answer those questions.”

One week on, many still struggling

Saturday will mark one week since the rail disaster, and vigils are planned for Friday night and early Saturday morning across Quebec as well as in the neighbouring U.S. states of Maine and Vermont to remember the dead and support those still struggling with the aftermath of the disaster.

Friends and loved ones of the missing and the dead were planning to gather at the local high school in Lac-Mégantic at 1:15 a.m. ET, the time at which disaster struck the small Quebec town a week ago Saturday. But police and Lac-Mégantic’s mayor have since advised people to hold smaller, personal vigils instead, fearing that too many people from neighbouring towns would show up for the event.

Mayor Colette Roy-Laroche said the community will eventually organize a communal event to mourn the victims but that she would prefer people remain in their homes and hold private memorials for now.

On Saturday morning, the local church will ring its bells 50 times — once for each of those feared dead.

Vigils are planned in Montreal, Gatineau, Trois-Rivières and as far away as Manitoba, as well as in some of the U.S. states that neighbour Quebec communities. Lac-Mégantic is a town of about 6,000 people located in Quebec’s Eastern Townships region near the Maine border.

The mayor said she has been touched by the outpouring of support from neighbouring areas but said she doesn’t want the disaster to hurt the tourism of the whole region.

“They were getting cancellation calls,” she said. “I don’t want the whole area to be touched by the catastrophe we’re experiencing here in Mégantic. My message is: before you cancel, communicate with the tourism authority for the whole area. Those [other areas] weren’t affected.”

Access to red zone still restricted

The town is still very much in disarray a week after the July 6 derailment. The shells of the burned train have not been removed, and residents are also facing public health concerns and cleanup of the debris and oil dispersed by the runaway rail cars.

The worst-hit area of town, dubbed the red zone, remains closed to the public. Police have erected a 2.5-metre fence around the zone, blocking from view what was once the downtown core of restaurants, bars and shops — but which now resembles a blackened war zone.

Roy-Laroche told the media Friday that she is not sure when the residents whose homes are inside the zone will be able to return.

“If they weren’t able to get back home, it’s because we can’t ensure their safety,” she said. “We are assessing the situation every hour. Are we talking about weeks? Months? I will ask the [emergency] services to give more precise information to those citizens so they know exactly what to expect, but I can’t tell you more at this point.”

The explosion and fire set off by the derailment forced a third of Lac-Mégantic’s residents out of their homes. All but 200 have now been allowed to return home, and the town’s boil water advisory has been lifted.

Mayor Roy-Laroche says the city has received $25 million to help plan the reconstruction of the devastated downtown core, and a financial assistance program for residents will be open as early as Monday.

A benefit concert for Lac-Mégantic was also announced Friday, to take place at Le National in Montreal on July 17. Hockey players from the NHL have agreed to donate items for a silent auction that will be part of the benefit event.

3:50: The Bufffalo Sabres have picked defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen out of Finland. The Sabres will pick again later in the first round, but decided to take a defenseman as skilled Russian forward Valeri Nichushkin continues to fall on the board.

3:48: Are the troubling Sergei Bobrovsky contract negotiations in Columbus causing the snub of Russia forward Valeri Nichuskin? He’s an Evgeni Malkin-like talent, but teams are concerned that the Kontinental Hockey League might open up the vault and offer him a contract he can’t refuse.

3:45: Very logical pick for the Oilers to take Darnell Nurse. He’s the big defenseman they need to play with all of their great forwards. He’s hard to play against, and he has some offensive up-side.

3:43: The Islanders ship out Nino Niederreiter, trading him to the Wild for Cal Clutterbuck. Islanders get one of the most aggressive hitters in the game in exchange for a forward with potential to be a 30-goal guy . He played well at the World championships.

3:38: Calgary Flames GM Jay Feaster acknowledges the losses in the recent flood. “We are southern Alberta and we’ll be back even stronger,” he said. The Flames take Sean Monahan with the sixth pick.

3:33: Carolina Hurricanes take Elias Lindholm with the fifth pick.

3:27: Predators GM David Poile didn’t expect Seth Jones to drop to fourth, but he did. Poile takes him. Said earlier he considered him the top prospect in the draft. Jones’ father, former NBA player Popeye Jones, was born in Dresden, Tenn. Played ball at Murray State.

3:21: Tampa Bay takes Jonathan Drouin with the third pick. The Predators will not pass on Seth Jones at No. 4. GM David Poile loves him.

3:20: It took a little more than six minutes between the first pick and the second pick. That’s good time. That would mean a first round lasting a little more than three hours.

3:17: Teams love offense, even though premium defensemen are hard to find. Florida snubs Seth Jones to take Alexander Barkov who was a point-per-game guy in the Finnish Elite League

3:10: Colorado’s Joe Sakic wasn’t bluffing. He took a forward with a first overall pick, and as expected, it was Nathan MacKinnon from Halifax.

2:55: Commissioner Gary Bettman paid tribute to agent Don Baizley, who died this week of cancer. Baizley was one of the most respected agents in the game. Fans booed Bettman, paused to allow the Baizley tribute, and then continued to boo Bettman.

2:50: The New Jersey Devils fans had loudest boos for the New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Los Angeles Kings and Minnesota Wild during the roll of teams before the draft.

The booing of the Rangers was loudest because they are the Devils’ archrival. But the boos for rivals Pittsburgh and Philadelphia were strong. The New Jersey fans booed Los Angeles because the Kings beat the Devils in the 2012 Stanley Cup Final and they booed Minnesota because New Jersey’s Zach Parise left the Devils to sign with the Wild in 2012.

2:45 p.m.: The Pittsburgh Penguins announced that they sent forward Tyler Kennedy to the San Jose Sharks for a second-round pick (50th overall). Kennedy, 26, had spent his entire NHL career with the Penguins.

2:30 p.m.: Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said he met with free agent center Vinny Lecavalier for 30 to 40 minutes Sunday morning, but he received no indication how long Lecavalier will take to make a decision.

“I don’t know what their process is,” said Holland, who said he was sure Lecavalier had penty of teams interested.

The Calgary Flames are known to be interested, along with the Dallas Stars and Montreal Canadiens among others

Lecavalier does have a relationship with Calgary general manager Jay Feaster, who was GM in Tampa Bay when Lecavalier was helping the team win the Stanley Cup. The Flames need an offensive center, and Lecavalier, at 33, is still capable of scoring 60-plus points.

2 p.m.: This year’s draft is different because teams can only take five minutes between each pick. Players are being asked to hug a few less people when they are picked to help ensure the draft doesn’t last too long.

Noon: The first trade on what’s supposed to be a heavy day of trades was a small one. The New York Rangers acquired Minnesota Wild defenseman Justin Falk for forward Benn Ferriero and a sixth-round pick in 2014. Falk had three assists in 36 games last season.

One a wild day at sun-drenched, seaside Sebonack Golf Club — high winds, strenuous pin placements and only one player under par in the third round — most everyone at the U.S. Women’s Open was on edge from their first tee shot.

Disagreements between player and caddie were frequent as shot selection and the flight of the ball were up for debate on nearly every shot.

That was a burden for some more than others, and a shouting match between Jessica Korda and her caddie, Jason Gilroyed, ended up in an unusual dismissal.

Korda fired Gilroyed after nine holes and put her boyfriend, Johnny DelPrete, on the bag. Korda went on to bogey the 12th hole. She shot 40 on the front nine but came home with a 36 on the back for a 4-over-par 76.

She is tied for sixth, 11 shots behind Inbee Park, who was the only player to break par.

“We had a couple of disagreements here and there, and I wasn’t in the right state of mind. I knew I needed to switch and just have a little bit more fun out there,” Korda said. “It’s a U.S. Open. It’s tough out there. It just wasn’t working out.

” … It was tough for me, because I care about Jason a lot. He is a great guy. That’s just how it happens sometimes in life. That was one of those things today that it just unfolded. It was very hard for me to do. I’m not that type of person to take these things really easily. For me it was very hard to tell him that and it took a lot for me.”

Gilroyed could not be reached for comment.

DelPrete was following Korda when he suddenly had a new job.

“I just told him, ‘Johnny, grab the bag, let’s go.’ ” Korda said.

Korda said she does not know if she will rehire Gilroyed. However, while her boyfriend will be on the bag for the final round, he will not become her regular caddie.

“I think everybody has problems every week,” Korda said. “You blame the caddie, the caddie blames you. It’s just up in the air. I just felt like enough was enough today. I just wasn’t mentally ready for it.”

Korda’s sister, Nelly, 14, was the youngest player to make the cut this week. There is little chance she will fire her caddie — it’s her father, former tennis star Petr.

The mother of a teenager who died from cardiac arrhythmia last year is blaming his death on Monster Beverage Corp., alleging in a lawsuit filed Tuesday that his death was caused by habitually drinking the company’s energy drink.

Alex Morris, 19, went into cardiac arrest during the early morning hours of July 1 and was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The lawsuit filed in Alameda County Superior Court alleges Morris would not have died if he did not drink two cans of Monster’s energy drink every day for the three years before his death, including the day he died.

Morris’ mother, Paula Morris, is listed as a plaintiff in the case.

The lawsuit comes after the family of 14-year-old Anais Fournier, of Maryland, also sued the company last year after she consumed two 24-ounce cans of Monster and died.

“Our allegations in the lawsuits are the same and that’s the peoples deaths were caused by these energy drinks and, more specifically, the defendants failure to warn about the dangers,” said Alexander Wheeler, an attorney representing the plaintiffs in both cases.

Monster representatives did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

The Corona-based company said previously in Fournier’s case that no blood test was performed to confirm that the girl died of “caffeine toxicity” as the lawsuit claimed, saying she died of natural causes brought on by pre-existing conditions.

Monster and other energy drinks have received increased scrutiny in recent months. The Food and Drug Administration is investigating reports of deaths linked to energy drinks, including five that cite Monster beverages, but the agency noted that the reports don’t prove the drinks caused the deaths.

San Francisco city attorney Dennis Herrera is also suing Monster Beverage for marketing its energy drinks to children, saying the products pose severe health risks.

Indonesia’s president has apologised to neighbouring Malaysia and Singapore for the thick haze caused by fires in Sumatra.

Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said firefighters were working hard to extinguish the blazes.

The smog caused record levels of air pollution in Singapore and forced hundreds of Malaysian schools to close.

The haze is being blamed on illegal slash-and-burn fires used to clear land for palm oil production.

“As president of Indonesia, I apologise for what has happened and ask for the understanding of the people of Malaysia and Singapore,” Mr Yudhoyono said late on Monday.

“We accept it is our responsibility to tackle the problem,” he said, adding that there should be “a thorough investigation” into the fires.

The blaze strained diplomatic relations between Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore last week, as governments argued over who was to blame for the smog, and an Indonesian official suggested that Malaysian and Singaporean companies in Sumatra also bore some responsibility.

Two arrested

Indonesia is conducting water-bombing and cloud seeding operations in a bid to combat the fires, which are primarily in Sumatra’s Riau province.

• Cheaper than using excavators and bulldozers
• Illegal burning of forests to clear land for palm oil plantations is common in Indonesia – particularly in dry season
• Indonesia says it is investigating several palm oil companies

Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency said that at least 69 of the 265 fires in Riau were put out on Monday, AP news agency reported.

Meanwhile, police in Indonesia said two people had been arrested for starting fires.

“We arrested two farmers in Riau who were clearing their land by burning. They were not working for anyone but just clearing their own land,” Agus Rianto, a police spokesman, said.

Malaysia declared a state of emergency in two southern districts on Sunday as air pollution levels reached a 16-year high, leaving two towns in virtual shutdown.

In Singapore, the Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) hit a record high of 401 on Friday – a level where prolonged exposure is considered potentially “life-threatening” for old and vulnerable people.

Air pollution levels dropped over the weekend as prevailing wind directions changed, the National Environment Agency said. On Tuesday morning, the PSI reading was 47, which is within the “good” range for air quality.

“I think about Lina every day. … She was stunningly beautiful. She had class, elegance, style,” said Adam Kaufman.

 

The death of 33-year-old Lina Kaufman in the early morning hours of Nov. 7, 2007, came without warning. The mother of two was living with her husband, Adam, in a wealthy suburb of Miami.

 

“This particular morning, it was about 5 o’clock. … I remember waking up … and seeing her not there. … And I figured, OK, you know, she’s with the baby. She’s not in bed, she’s with the baby,” Adam told “48 Hours” correspondent Erin Moriarty.

 

“Right around 6 o’clock, I woke up again. She wasn’t there. That’s when I got a pit in my stomach. … I remember calling. No response. I remember walking into the bathroom and seeing her there … slumped over onto the magazine rack.”

 

“I just remember being in a frantic mode to — to save her,” he said.

 

Adam Kaufman hysterically called 911 and unsuccessfully tried to revive Lina.

 

“When I got there … Adam … was at the top of the staircase … Completely distraught. I’ve never seen him that way before in my whole entire life,” said Adam’s identical twin brother, Seth Kaufman.

 

“Eighteen months later was like a second death in the family,” Seth continued. “A SWAT team came in with laser pointer rifles and threw Adam on the floor and arrested him.”

 

Elaine Kaufman never imagined it would come to this — that she and her close-knit family would be snubbed in their own community, an affluent suburb of Miami.

 

“I hear whispering when I go places,” she explained. “Some people just ignore you. Some people don’t wanna hear from you. ”

 

“There are people in this town who think your son is a killer,” Moriarty told her.

 

“Let them think what they want to think,” Elaine Kaufman said. “And we’re gonna show everybody that he’s not.”

 

Adam Kaufman, a successful real estate executive, husband and father of two, now found himself branded a murderer.

 

“You gotta be kidding me. How could this happen?” he told Moriarty.

 

But there are the photos taken after Lina’s death that show marks on her neck. And in April 2009, a year-and-a-half after he says he found his wife unresponsive in their home, Adam Kaufman was charged with strangling her.

 

“There’s a mistake,” Adam told Moriarty. “What evidence is there? There’s — there’s no evidence.”

 

No one took the news harder than Adam’s twin, Seth.

 

“It was devastation … they might as well have locked me up,” said Seth Kaufman.

 

“I can tell what he’s thinking, what he’s going through,” he said. “We do feel each other’s pain. … That’s how close we are.”

 

Asked if his brother is scared, Seth replied, “Of course, he’s scared.”

 

The news of Adam’s arrest and Lina’s death shook everyone around them — it simply didn’t fit with the couple they knew.

 

“She was his soul mate,” Seth said. “…they were just amazing together.”

 

Did you ever see anything that concerned you about their marriage?” Moriarty asked Elaine Kaufman.

 

“Never. Never,” she replied. “I saw them all the time. They were happy. They — they loved each other.”

 

Friends and family searched back in their minds. Did they miss something? Lina’s mother, Frida Aizman, remembers a strange conversation she had with Lina just two months before her death.

 

“She said, ‘Listen. If something happened to me, I want you to know that I trust my kids only to you,'” Aizman recalled. “I don’t know why she ask me. I don’t know what — what her thought was in this moment.”

 

But Aizman says there was no sense that anything was wrong on Nov. 6, 2007. She saw her only daughter at work at the family’s upscale furniture business, never dreaming it would be the last time.

 

“I said, ‘You look so beautiful, so classical.’ And she said, ‘Are you proud of me?’ I said, ‘Of course,'” Aizman told Moriarty.

 

“And how would you describe her mood?”

 

“She was very, very, very happy,” Aizman replied.

 

At the time, Lina, Adam and their kids lived right around the corner from Adam’s brother, Seth, and his bride-to-be, Raquel.

 

“Was Lina excited about the wedding?” Moriarty asked Adam.

 

“She was so looking forward to it,” Adam said. “She was– one of Raquel’s bridesmaids. I was Seth’s best man. She was her happiest.”

 

That evening, Lina got a spray tan – her first – to prepare for the big day. On the way home, she visited a friend to show off her tan, have a glass of wine and a bite to eat. Adam was home, he says, taking care of 5-year-old Haley and 2-year-old Jake.

 

“So I remember her coming home around 11:00,” Adam told Moriarty.

 

“Did you see her when she came home?”

 

“Yes. Yes, I was already in bed watching TV,” he replied.

 

According to Adam, Lina undressed. “And you could definitely tell she was spray tanned. It just seemed a lot to me,” he noted.

 

They went to bed and the next time Adam says he saw his wife was in the early morning hours of Nov. 7, 2007; she was in this bathroom, he says, slumped over the magazine rack.

 

“I remember going to — over to her, seeing all this red stuff all over. Pink, almost frothy whatever it was,” he explained. “And I remember grabbin’ her from the back. And she felt cold.

 

“Lina, Lina, Lina, wake up,” he continued.

 

At 6:10 a.m., Adam called 911:

 

 

“My wife is in the bathroom dying… She’s on the floor dying. 

There’s blood. There’s stuff coming out of her mouth, there’s foam.

She looks pale. She looks sick. She has marks on her neck. I don’t know what happened.”

 

 

The 911 operator instructed him to give his wife CPR.

 

“Push down on her chest rapidly–30 times,” Adam explained. “And then back to breathing into her mouth twice.”

 

 

911 Dispatcher: I need you to do compressions. OK? 

 

Adam Kaufman: …21,22,23,24,25,26…

 

911 Dispatcher: Can you hear her breathing?

 

Adam Kaufman: No, she’s cold. …

 

911 Dispatcher: Did something happen? Did she fall?

 

Adam Kaufman: No. No… Oh my Go–Lina …

 

911 Dispatcher: Calm down sir, help is on the way, OK?

 

 

“You told the operator there were marks on her neck. Where were those marks?” Moriarty asked Adam.

 

“Here, here,” he replied, pointing at his neck. “There were maybe three or four of ’em that I could see.”

 

It would take fire rescue teams 16 minutes to find the Kaufman home.

 

“They were frantic,” Adam explained. “Putting something over her face, putting something in her mouth. … Continually asking me questions about — her health. … I’m thinking, OK, what health problems does she have? Lina was always healthy to me.”

 

Seth and Raquel raced over to help Adam and his children.

 

Seth Kaufman told Moriarty,” We got there and they were working on her in the bedroom at that time. … it was just an awful scene. It was just tough to –to — to look at.”

 

They couldn’t save her. Lina Kaufman was pronounced dead at the hospital.

 

“I was numb. I — I couldn’t — I couldn’t think straight. I couldn’t feel my body,” Adam told Moriarty.

 

“What are you thinking had happened to Lina?”

 

“I had no idea,” he said.

 

Adam had to break the news to Lina’s mother.

 

“Adam was crying,” Aizman recalled. “And then he said, ‘She’s gone.’ … ‘Lina is gone.'”

 

“What did you think?” Moriarty asked.

When Jacqueline Zuccherino came to the United States and entered kindergarten, she spoke little English. In addition, there were no bilingual classes for Italian speakers. She lived with her grandmother at the time and was shy and reserved. She, however, quickly became fluent in English and familiar with all things American. Later, Jacqueline was reunited with the rest of her family, and they moved to Colorado. Jacqueline instantly fell in love with the majestic Rocky Mountains.

While attending public high school, Jacqueline worked part-time in retail sales. She was a party coordinator for children’s events and a hostess at several local eateries. Later, Jacqueline’s family decided to homeschool her to better suit their traveling lifestyle. She then traveled with her mother to Costa Rica and Mexico to provide aid to physically and mentally challenged children and adults who were living in local faith-based facilities.

Jacqueline entered college in the fall of 2011 and is seeking a career in forensic pathology. Jacqueline recognizes that humanitarian service is needed not only in other countries, but also in her own town. She is working on a project that provides backpacks filled with reading and school supplies to children in shelters for domestic violence and is developing a curriculum for middle school girls that addresses the dangers of female bullying.

She is a fifth-generation resident of Ramona, a small, country town in the northeast hills of San Diego County. Alexa has participated in competitive cheerleading since she was 8-years-old and was a captain and four-year member of the varsity cheer team at Ramona High School. Three Morehead State University students are among the 32 contestants that will compete in the 2013 Miss Kentucky Pageant. Those contestants are Annie Franklin of Winchester; Cayce Crowder of Louisville; and Dakoda Trenary of Corinth.

According to its website, each student gained entry into the 2013 Miss Kentucky Pageant by winning an official preliminary pageant in their respective regions. Franklin captured Miss Bluegrass Area, Crowder won Miss Heart of the Mountains while Trenary was the winner of Miss Thoroughbred of the Bluegrass.

Franklin’s platform is “H’Art of the Matter- Much More than Art” while she will sing “Happy Days Are Here Again” as her talent.

Crowder’s platform is “Baby Feat – Defeating the Stigma of Postpartum Depression” while she will sing “Brave” as her talent.

Trenary’s platform is “God’s Special Little Hearts – Raising Awareness for Children with Congenital Heart Defects” while she will perform “Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2” on the piano as her talent.

The event’s preliminary competitions will take place at 7 p.m. on June 27 and 28 with the finals and crowning set for 7 p.m., June 29. Each day of the pageant will be held at the Singletary Center for the Arts on the campus of the University of Kentucky in Lexington. Tickets are available by calling the Singletary Center box office at 859-257-4929.

Supporters of the two can possibly play an important role in the pageant’s outcome. One of the semifinalists for Miss Kentucky will be voted in by the public rather than the judges’ panel. Each vote costs $1 and can be made by credit card or PayPal at www.misskentuckypageant.com with no voting limit.

Voting ends Friday, June 28, at 9 p.m.

The winner will go on to represent Kentucky in the Miss America Pageant in 2014. In addition, more than $39,000 in cash scholarships will be awarded during the pageant’s duration.

All twenty, made it to the finals after going through a successful makeover and photo shoot session held in Accra last weekend.

The session, wholly managed by the FC Skin and Beauty Klinik and Professional Photographer Steven Adusei, saw the ladies uniquely transformed, making the decision a tough one for the team of judges, which included Exclusive Events Ghana CEO Inna Maryam Patty, and Shika Obeng, a director at FC.

Thirty contestants, who had qualified out of a pool that auditioned during the 3-day national auditions in Accra, took part in the day’s makeover and photo shoot session, held at the Krokrobite Beach facility in the Greater Accra Region.

The number was later whittled down to twenty, who have thus qualified as finalists of the 2013 edition.

The finalists include Jasmine Seyram Akortsu (22) of the Central University College, Destiny Agnes Acquah, a 21 year-old level 300 Political Science student of the University of Ghana, Nadia Oforiwaa Gyimah (19), of the KNUST, Angela Awity (19), a level 100 Water Resources Management student, also from KNUST, Margaret Kuma Mintah (22) of the University of Ghana, Chantell Anombase, a receptionist, Emelda Adukwei Mills Pappoe, (23) a graduate of the KNUST, Golda Aba Dayi (21), a graduate of the radio broadcasting academy RABODEF, Angela Anyele (21), a level 300 Linguistics and Information Studies student of the University of Ghana and Sylvia Adu Tieku (20), a second year student of KNUST.

Others include Michelle Addo (21) of The Interior Design Institute, Zuleiya Tanko, a 19 year-old Senior High School graduate, Maame Serwaah Arkorful Awotwe, an Access to Nursing student of the Brixton College – London, Maureen Micah (22) of the Ghana Institute of Journalism, Baafi Guiseppine (22), a second year student of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Crystal Selorm Amudzi (20), of the University of Ghana, Matilda Kiki Sefakor (21), a final year student of the University of Cape Coast, Safoa Eisenhower (21), a fashion and design student of Accra Polytechnic, Belinda Asiamah (20), University of Ghana, and Selasie Nanietta Agbitor (21) from the National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI).

Among other things, the finalists will take part in grooming and mentoring sessions, coaching, skills training and development as well as engage in special, themed Miss Ghana 2013 events, which include the Street Fashion Show, Kids Bazaar, Beauty with a Purpose tasks and Talent Competition.

A YOUNG man remains in a coma after organisers of a party designed to promote Jagermeister pumped liquid nitrogen into a swimming pool.

Nine partygoers who were in the pool at the time were taken to hospital after four buckets of liquid nitrogen were poured in. Eight of the nine have since been released.

Last Saturday’s party, held in Leon, Mexico, was attended by about 200 people, mainly young adults.

Witnesses told the Daily Mail party organisers, dressed in orange uniforms, had added the substance to the pool to create a smoke effect.

But shortly thereafter, party attendees noticed people in the pool passing out and losing consciousness.

It has been suggested that the liquid nitrogen had a chemical interaction with the chlorine in the pool which created toxic smoke.

A 21-year-old man, identified as Jose Ignacio Lopez del Toro by Univision Noticias, remains in a coma in Campestre Medical Hospital.

Mexican officials have launched an investigation.

In a statement from Jagermesiter headquarters in Germany, company officials said they were working with event organisers and authorities to determine what happened.

“We fully support responsible drinking and adhere to the guidelines within each market in which we operate,” the Jagermeister officials said in their statement.

A teenage girl chopped her father’s head clean off with a bush knife after he raped her in their home in the highlands of Papua New Guinea.

Now residents of the village have formed a protective ring around the 18-year-old, refusing to hand her over to the police because they agreed her ‘evil’ father deserved to die.

A local church leader, Pastor Lucas Kumi from the village of Rang in the Western Highlands, said the entire community would refuse to allow the girl to be subjected to any official investigation.

‘The people and leaders in our area went and saw the headless body of the father after the girl reported the incident to them and explained why she had killed her father,’ said Pastor Kumi.

He told the Post Courier newspaper that the father, in his mid-40s, raped his daughter when they were alone in their house after the mother and two other children from the family went to visit relatives for the night.

‘The father went to his daughter’s room in the night and raped her repeatedly.

‘The father wanted to rape his daughter again in the morning and that was when the young girl picked up the bush knife and chopped her father’s head off,’ said Pastor Kumi.

‘We’ve all agreed that she is free to stay in the community because the father deserved to die.

‘The daughter did what she did because of the trauma and the evil actions of her father, so that is why we have all agreed that she remains in the community.’

He said a ring of protection had been placed around the girl, who will be kept away from any official investigation.

‘The community have also agreed not to conduct any formal burial service for the father.’

Crimes of rape, murder, suspected witch killings and prostitution are rife throughout Papua New Guinea and as a desperate attempt to stop the lawlessness the government recently re-introduced the death penalty for serious offences.

But at the weekend the Post Courier reported the results of an investigation into child prostitution, a report, it said, that will ‘make you cringe.’

Children aged between 13 and 16, said the paper, were selling sex in the nightclubs of the capital, Port Moresby, five premises being reported to be engaged in the under-age prostitution trade.

Three non-government organisations have produced a report based on interviews with no less than 175 child sex workers.

‘It’s true – our girls, and especial school girls, are being bought and sold for sex,’ said one of the investigators.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA)  is investigating a report that one of its officers allegedly humiliated a 15-year-old girl wearing leggings, a tank top, and a button-down, telling her she should cover up as she went through an ID-check line in the Los Angeles Airport Sunday.

“She said the officer was ‘glaring’ at her and mumbling. She said, ‘Excuse me?’ and he said, ‘You’re only 15, cover yourself!’ in a hostile tone,” the girl’s father, Mark Frauenfelder, told Yahoo! Shine, echoing what he had written in a Boing Boing blog post describing the incident. “It shook her up,” he added.

Frauenfelder, who is editor in chief of Make magazine and the founder of Boing Boing, told Shine that his daughter, Sarina, was with a group of high school peers, on their way to visit colleges. He said that she began a rapid-fire series of texts to him and his wife by declaring, “I’m furious!” and adding, about the TSA officer, “He was so rude and hostile. He made me feel like a slut.”

Frauenfelder posted a photo of his daughter in the outfit she had on during the incident and wrote, “It doesn’t matter what she was wearing, though, because it’s none of his business to tell girls what they should or should not wear. His creepy thoughts are his own problem, and he shouldn’t use his position of authority as an excuse to humiliate a girl and blame her for his sick attitude.”

A TSA spokesperson would not elaborate on the investigation, telling Yahoo! Shine only that the agency was “looking into the matter.”

Frauenfelder and his wife happened to have just arrived at LAX from Tokyo shortly after the incident. They were able to meet with a TSA supervisor, who was respectful and attentive, and appeared to be taking the matter seriously, Frauenfelder said.

“I think that it is really dangerous for the TSA to do anything outside of their very narrow job description, which is to ensure the safety of passengers from violent attacks,” he said, explaining to Yahoo! Shine why he decided to make an issue out of the incident. He added that it was a “huge abuse of authority” for a TSA officer to be “telling a girl that what she’s wearing is something she should be ashamed of.”

Another blogger—Maureen Herman, co-founder of the women’s advocacy group A Is For, as well as a friend of Frauenfelder’s—also wrote about the incident Sunday, explaining why the TSA officer’s reported conduct matters.

“This may not seem like a big deal. To Mark it’s a big deal. To his daughter it’s a big deal. To us, things like this need to matter, because they inject shame (or try to) in a young woman who is just living her life, going to check out colleges, and throws on the first of what will unfortunately be many layers of sexism she will encounter in her life,” Herman wrote. “It’s like when someone experiences racism for the first time: it’s going to happen again, but the first time is especially jarring and hurtful.”

Herman unleashed more anger on her Facebook page. “Absolutely inappropriate, harassing, aggressive, creepy, unprofessional, and Taliban-y thing that he did,” she wrote. “ ‘Cover up’ is a dangerous cultural attitude that fuels more than rude comments. It’s the foundation of the oppression of women, rape culture (‘she was asking for it’), and the drive for reproductive control of women’s bodies.”

Many of Frauenfelder’s nearly 24,000 Twitter followers were also angered to hear about the incident. “Wow. Give some people a uniform and, wow,” wrote one commenter, while others were a bit more charged, tweeting, “Maybe the TSA can keep a stock of courtesy burkas on hand,” and “American Taliban.”

A field of 51 beauty queens from every U.S. state and the District of Columbia are set to compete for the 62nd Miss USA title Sunday.

The contestants will strut across the stage at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip.

The woman crowned the 2013 Miss USA winner will replace reigning queen Nana Meriwether and go on to compete in the Miss Universe pageant.

The night’s winner also becomes a spokeswoman for breast and ovarian cancer awareness and other causes, while traveling to promote the organization.

The beauty queens will battle it out in three competitions: swimsuit, evening gown and interview question.

Contestants will be whittled to 15 following the show’s opening number, in which the beauty queens introduce themselves one-by-one.

Most of the competitors will be quickly sent home. The top 16 were picked by preliminary judges through competitions and interviews during the week before the telecast.

Celebrity judges including fashion designer Betsey Johnson, “Biggest Loser” star Bob Harper and “Wait Wait … Don’t Tell Me” personality Mo Rocca will then pick the top eight after the swimsuit competition. The judge panel will narrow it down to a top 4 after the evening gown portion.

Ben Hogan used a 1-iron for a historic shot that helped him win the 1950 U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club. Under far different circumstances, PGA Tour rookie Shawn Stefani had a memorable moment with his 4-iron Sunday.

It had not been a weekend to celebrate for Stefani. He shot an 85 (+15) on Saturday. But he lifted his arms in the air and jumped for joy Sunday after making a hole in one on the tough par-3 17th.

When he teed up at the 229-yard 17th in the final round, the 31-year-old from Houston was 20 over par. But he said he’d still enjoyed playing before the big crowds this week.

“It was kind of funny. I got up on the tee after 16 and walked to the tee, and I usually don’t look at crowds,” he said. “I’m not paying attention to it. But I kind of looked up there to see just how many people were in the stands. And the stands were full.”

His tee shot took a helpful bounce off the rough on a slope to the left of the green. Then the ball rolled the width of the undulating green and curved right into the cup.

Stefani’s caddie, Chris Callas, jumped up and down, too.

“I wasn’t really thinking about doing anything spectacular. It just happened,” Stefani said. “But to do that on that hole in this tournament is something that I’ll never forget as long as live. And we’ll have to wait and see what happens on (ESPN) SportsCenter(Sunday night).”

The 6-2, 205-pounder celebrated like a linebacker who’d just made a big sack.

“I can’t remember anything on the tee. It happened. I jumped up and down, slapped some hands, and I really don’t know what happened after that,” he said.

Stefani’s best finish this year has been a seventh place at the Tampa Bay Championship. Tough he bogeyed his last hole Sunday, Stefani still shot a one under 69 for the round. He finished the tournament 19 over par.

Stefani’s best finishes this year have been a tie for seventh at the Tampa Bay Championship in March and tie for seventh this month at the FedEx St. Jude Classic.

His hole-in-one was the first during an Open at Merion, which has hosted five of them and the 43rd in U.S. Open history. The previous one was last year by John Peterson on the 199-yard 13th hole at The Olympic Club in San Francisco.

Pope Francis has taken his first major step towards reforming to the troubled Vatican bank, naming a trusted cleric to oversee its management.

The Vatican said Monsignor Battista Mario Salvatore Ricca had been approved as interim prelate of the Institute for Religious Works, as the bank is known.

Msgr Ricca currently runs a number of Church-owned properties.

The IOR, considered one of the world’s most secretive banks, has been at the centre of several scandals.

In February, German lawyer Ernst von Freyberg was named the IOR’s new chairman, eight months after his predecessor was ousted amid a money laundering probe.

The appointment was one of the last acts of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, who became the first Pope to resign in 600 years later that month.

In May, Mr von Freyberg said he was instituting checks on the IOR’s 19,000 accounts, which are mostly held by Vatican employees, charities, priests and nuns.

Although Msgr Ricca was nominated by Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican announcement made clear that Pope Francis personally backed the appointment.

Msgr Ricca runs the hotel where the Pope is living while his official residence is renovated.

As the prelate of the IOR – a post that has been vacant since 2011 – Msgr Ricca will report to the five-member commission of cardinals that oversees the bank, attend board meetings and have access to information on its financial activities.

The IOR is currently seeking recognition from the Council of Europe’s anti-money laundering committee, Moneyval, that it is fully compliant with international standards on combating money laundering, tax evasion and terrorist financing.

Last year, Moneyval said the bank was making progress but needed to improve.

The bank’s rules for customer due diligence, wire transfers and suspicious-transaction reporting were insufficient, and it needed an independent supervisor, Moneyval added.

Founded in 1942, the bank has 114 employees and $7.1bn of assets.

An outpouring of financial and emotional support is coming to a Georgia dad who was paralyzed when he dove head-first into a creek to save a 4-year-old girl who was drowning in a lake last week.

Mike Patterson, 40, was at the Rockmart Dam in Rockmart, Ga., with his son on June 8 when he heard the screams of 4-year-old Javaeh Jones’ mother after her daughter had fallen into the lake. The girl was playing in the water when she waded into an area over her head and was swept away by a current, according to the gofundme.org page set up for Patterson.

Once he saw that the girl was in serious danger while struggling in the water, Patterson dove in after her.

“He has always been like that – someone else first,” Vickie Jones Roberson, Patterson’s mother, told ABC News affiliate WSB-TV.

Patterson struck his head during the dive. He broke his neck in three places and severed his spinal cord, leaving him paralyzed, according to the gofundme.com page. He was floating face down in the water and unconscious approximately three minutes before anyone realized what had happened.

He was soon pulled to the shore by bystanders, but was not breathing when emergency medical personnel arrived. Members of the emergency medical service crew performed CPR on Patterson, and he was transported to Redmond Regional Medical Center.

Javaeh was rescued from the water and was able to be resuscitated, according to a Facebook page set up in Patterson’s honor.

Patterson had just started a new contracting job two weeks prior to the incident, and he is now facing thousands of dollars in medical bills with no insurance, Roberson said.

As of Thursday, the GoFundMe.com page had topped $25,000 in donations. Roberson said she was overwhelmed with the outpouring of support for her son.

“I did not realize that there was still kindness in this world like there is,” she said. “I kind of thought the world had grown cold until this happened to my son.”

Doctors and family were watching Patterson’s condition closely, according to a Facebook post on Thursday, which said he seemed to have taken a turn for the worse as he began experiencing breathing problems. The doctors were doing everything they could to address it, according to the post.

Investigators thought Jose Martinez may have had something to do with the shooting of an Alabama man, found dead by hunters on a forest’s edge.

Little did they know.

The 52-year-old Californian confessed to pulling the trigger in that March killing, the Lawrence County, Alabama, Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday. He didn’t stop there: Martinez also admitted killing more than 30 men in all, much like he did Jose Ruiz.

“Killing people doesn’t seem to affect him,” sheriff’s Capt. Tim McWhorder said.

As of Thursday, authorities had identified 13 violent deaths linked to Martinez since his admission. At least 10 of those occurred in California, according to McWhorder.

He’s also been tied — by a DNA match to a cigarette butt found inside a victims’ truck — to a 2006 double homicide in Ocala, Florida, the Marion County, Florida, Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday.

Martinez explained that his record of violence has to do with his job as an enforcer for Mexican drug cartels. A U.S. citizen, he’d be called when someone hadn’t lived up to their obligations.

As he told investigators, “I’m the guy that pays you a visit if you don’t pay.”

Captain: Suspect ‘made up his mind he was going to kill’

The killing of Jose Ruiz, though, was personal, authorities say.

As McWhorder explained, the two had entered into “some type of business arrangement” in Alabama, where Ruiz lived in Decatur and Martinez had family.

While working together, Ruiz bad-mouthed the girlfriend of another man, Jamie Romero, calling her names and “a bad woman.”

Apparently, he didn’t know that Romero’s girlfriend was also Martinez’s daughter.

That happened in January. Stewing on it for two months, Martinez returned to Alabama having “made up his mind he was going to kill him,” McWhorder said.

That’s what authorities now believe happened. All three men — Ruiz, Romero and Martinez — drove in Romero’s truck to the outskirts of Bankhead National Forest.

Ruiz didn’t make it out alive.

Authorities found evidence linking Romero to the death and arrested him a few days later. Romero said earlier on the day of Ruiz’s death, he’d been with Martinez. When investigators questioned him, Martinez admitted he’d been with Romero that day but denied having anything to do with that killing, according to the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office.

As rumors swirled, and the investigation went forward, authorities came to believe Martinez had lied.

An arrest warrant was issued for him, and he was picked up in Yuma, Arizona, just over the border from Mexico, where McWhorder said he’d been visiting family. The sheriff’s captain said authorities now believe “that Romero may not have known that the murder was going to take place.”

On June 3, Martinez was brought back to Alabama and charged with felony murder in Ruiz’s death. That’s where he was Wednesday, in Lawrence County Jail, after a judge ordered him held without bond.

More charges, and more answers, may be coming as authorities probe his possible connection to more killings from coast to coast.

The full details are in on Tim Tebow’s contract with the New England Patriots and, while the base salaries are the league minimum over the next two seasons and there’s no guaranteed money, there is a chance to make some decent cash in 2014 — presumably at a position other than quarterback.

Tebow can earn up to $2 million in playing-time incentives in 2014, according to a person who has reviewed the details of the contract.

The person, who spoke to USA TODAY Sports on condition of anonymity because the financial terms weren’t to be disseminated publicly, said Tebow will earn the full $2 million only if he’s on the field for 80% of the offensive snaps and the Patriots win 10 games or make the postseason.

Tebow will earn $500,000 if he participates in 60% of the plays in 2014, $1 million for 70% or $1.5 million for 80% of the plays without reaching the playoffs or winning 10 games.

Assuming Tom Brady stays healthy, Tebow’s best chance at hitting those incentives would be his playing somewhere other than quarterback. There are no playing time incentives this year for Tebow, meaning he’ll earn the same amount as a backup quarterback than he would earn as a contributor elsewhere.

Tebow is scheduled to earn a base salary of $630,000 this season. That salary has a “split” rate of $358,000 if he lands on injured reserve, meaning he’ll be paid the lower rate for all weeks he’s on IR. Tebow’s 2014 base salary is $730,000, with a split rate of $398,000.

Including the $25,000 workout bonus next year, the maximum value of the contract is $3.385 million over two years. The base value (minus incentives) is $1.385 million.

Ian Kennedy has been struggling, and the hit by pitches are just a part of that.

On Tuesday night, I called Ian Kennedy a “menace” on Twitter, and suggested that I thought he was a headhunter. After looking at more data and at the situations, I have a different opinion this morning: I don’t think that Kennedy was trying to hit Yasiel Puig in the head. I also kind of doubt he was actually trying to brain Zack Greinke, though, he was certainly trying to hit him.

Needless to say, both Zack Greinke and Ian Kennedy were wrong last night. Greinke shouldn’t have hit Miguel Montero in the back in retaliation for the incidental hitting of Puig, and Ian Kennedy was almost tragically in the wrong for sniping at Greinke. Both of them were bush league: That kind of crap should have no place in Major League Baseball, and I hope they’re both suspended for at least six days.

All of that said, this isn’t a post about who was right and who was wrong in an ethical sense. It’s about what was right and what’s now wrong with Ian Kennedy. In 2011, Kennedy won 21 games with a 2.88 ERA and rightfully finished high (4th) in the Cy Young voting. Despite working in the low 90s with his fastball, Kennedy managed to strike out 22 percent of the batters he faced, well above the NL average of 18 percent for starting pitchers, while posting one of the 15 best walk rates in the league. On top of it all, he managed to keep the ball in the ballpark, too. It was a perfect storm of command and control excellence, as he led the Diamondbacks to the NL West title and the second best finish in the franchise’s existence.

Alas, it was not to last. Kennedy is an extreme fly ball pitcher, and as such he relies on keeping runners off the bases by limiting his walks and hits allowed. Despite seeing his home run rate return to its historical norm last year, Kennedy remained a league average pitcher in large part because he was able to limit walks and batting average on balls in play. This year, however, not only has he continued to allow homers at an above average rate, but the precious command he needs has abandoned him. In fact, he’s walking batters at a higher than league average rate. Worse, more than a quarter of the batters he faces are ripping line drives off of him, especially as he falls behind more often and leaves pitches in the middle of the plate. Nearly 10 percent of the batters he faces come away with an extra base hit. In light of that, it’s easy to see why he has a 5.49 ERA and is frustrating his pitching coach with his inconsistency.

While his propensity to work inside and generate HBPs might have been a harmless byproduct when he was going well, it’s a burgeoning problem for Kennedy. He led the NL in HBP last year, and is on pace (with eight HBP in 13 starts) to hit more than 20 batters this year, a mark that hasn’t been reached since 2004. We saw last night how this lack of command can come back to bite him, as he unintentionally went too far up and in on Puig to put him on in front of Andre Ethier, who proceeded to slug his first homer since May 20. In 2011, Kennedy allowed 19 homers, only six in which runners were on. Last year, eleven out of 28. This year, six out of the 13 homers he’s allowed have come with runners on base.

If Kennedy has lost command, as these numbers seem to indicate, he’s simply not going to be an effective pitcher going forward. Worse, if he continues to try and pitch inside like he has been to right-handed hitters throughout his career, he’s going to hurt somebody. Intentional or not, he almost severely injured Puig and Greinke last night — a guy who can’t control where that pitch is going to end up has no business endangering the careers of the guys he’s playing against.

Maybe Kennedy is a menace, even if he doesn’t mean to be. It’s a cold comfort that, if he keeps pitching like this, he won’t be putting those batters in danger for much longer.

Barcelona footballer Lionel Messi and his father are being investigated in Spain for allegedly defrauding the state of more than 4m euros (£3.4m).

The 25-year-old Argentina forward and his father, Jorge Horacio, are suspected of filing fraudulent tax returns for 2007-09, officials say.

The World Player of the Year expressed his surprise, denying the allegation.

His Barcelona net salary is said to be some 16m euros a year, making him one of the world’s highest-paid athletes.

He has also signed a number of multimillion-dollar endorsements with major sponsors around the globe.

On Wednesday, a complaint signed by prosecutor Raquel Amado was filed at the courthouse in Gava – the affluent Barcelona district where Messi lives.

Judges at the courthouse must accept the complaint before the suspects can be charged, reports say.

In financial terms, 4m euros in the world of Lionel Messi is not a huge amount. According to Forbes, the Barcelona star currently earns more than 15m euros a year from his salary and prize money.

When you add in his earnings from sponsorship and the rights to his image, Forbes puts his total annual net income at more than 31m euros.

Messi is worshipped by Argentina and Barcelona football fans and admired all over the world for his ability on the pitch, and his humility off it. However the allegation the footballer and his father failed to declare millions of euros of income – while people in Spain, in general, pay more tax and often earn less, or don’t have a job at all because of the economic crisis – is making headlines all over the Spanish media.

Messi and his father deny any wrongdoing, he still hasn’t been charged and it could be a while until we know whether he will be because the legal system in Spain is notoriously slow moving. But despite all that, the scandal raises difficult questions, and the image of Lionel Messi could be damaged.

The player and his father are accused of three crimes of defrauding the state of taxes related to income from the use of his image.

They are suspected of using companies abroad – in Belize and Uruguay – to sell the rights to use the image.

The accusation is that with the help of firms based outside Spain, where he lives and plays club football, Messi and his father avoided paying more than 4m euros in tax.

If convicted, Messi could face up to six years in prison and a large fine, according to Spain’s EFE news agency.

Responding to the allegations, Messi expressed his surprise, saying he had only learned about the investigation against him through the media.

He wrote on his Facebook page: “We have never committed any infringement. We have always fulfilled all our tax obligations, following the advices of our tax consultants who will take care of clarifying this situation.”

Argentina’s media also appeared puzzled by Wednesday’s development, with the Clarin newspaper describing it as “unexpected news”.

Barcelona FC have not commented on the allegations.

The investigation comes as the Spanish authorities step up their efforts to clamp down on tax fraud, as the government tries to balance its budget during a continuing economic crisis, the BBC’s Tom Burridge in Madrid reports.

Joselyn Martinez was just 9 years old when her dad, Jose Martinez, was gunned down in front of his Bronx restaurant in November 1986. The police immediately identified the shooter as 16-year-old Justo Santos, but Santos managed to slip out of New York and flee to the Dominican Republic. Twenty-six years later, long after the New York police had lost track of the shooter, Joselyn found her father’s killer.

“I always kept the name in mind,” Joselyn, now a singer and aspiring actress, told The New York Post on Tuesday. “After so many years of not being caught, it wasn’t a reality to me anymore.”

Jose, then 41, kicked Santos and two friends out of the Dominican Express restaurant on Dyckman Street in Inwood after they reportedly started sexually harassing his wife, Idalia Martinez. Witnesses told police that, once on the sidewalk, Santos pulled out a pistol and shot Martinez in front of his wife. Idalia hailed a cab and took her bleeding husband to New York-Presbyterian Hospital Columbia, where he died that night.

“I woke up the next morning and was told my father was killed,” Joselyn told The New York Daily News on Monday.

“I remember his [Santos’] picture on the wanted posters. He was smiling. It was all over Dyckman Street,” she said. “My mom told me to never forget his name. She’d tell me, ‘You have to know who did this to your family.’ ”

“He ruined my life,” Idalia told the Post when asked about Santos. “He ruined the life of my daughter.”

Joselyn grew up and attended New York University, where she majored in political science and Latin American studies. She kept the wanted posters, so she could remember the face of the person she was looking for.

“I wanted to become a prosecutor in college,” she told the Daily News. “But then I decided to do what I really wanted to. How could I prosecute other cases when my father’s was unsolved?”

Ten years ago, she decided she’d pick up her father’s case herself. She asked the New York police for information about the case and started looking for Santos online.

“Knowing the person my father was, I couldn’t live with myself if [Santos] stayed free,” Joselyn told the Daily News. “I need to see him in New York to know this has really happened.”

“In 2004, when I started using MySpace, that’s when I got into using social media” to try and find him, she told the Post. In 2008, she typed his name into Background.com and got a hit. After paying about $70 in fees to Background.com and several other search sites, her efforts really paid off.

“They all had it. They had his address. They had his phone number,” she told the Daily News. “He must have thought it was all over, that he had gotten away with it.”

She collected as much data as she could and then turned it all over to the police, who worked with officers in other states to find Santos. On Friday, Joselyn got the call saying that Santos was finally in custody. Now 43, he’d been working as the manager of a janitorial company in Florida. He’d confessed to the killing and waived extradition, a police source told the New York Daily News; NYPD is bringing him back to New York to face charges.

“She did a good job, my daughter,” her mother told the Post.

“She was dynamite. She did a great job of finding this guy,” an unnamed law enforcement source told the Daily News. “She basically solved the case.”

But Joselyn says the kudos should go to the police in New York and Miami.

“I can’t take all the credit,” she told the Daily News. “The 34th Precinct and the cold case squad did all the work.”

Chad Johnson was just about to get off with community service and counseling instead of jail time for a probation violation in a domestic violence case in Florida when he decided to show his appreciation to his attorney.

The former NFL star looked as if he was trying to get Adam Swickle’s attention when he tapped him on the rear end before mouthing the words “good job,” all with a serious look on his face.

At least that’s how it looks to me. You can judge for yourself in the video above.

But no matter what any of us think, Broward County Circuit Judge Kathleen McHugh did not appreciate the action, particularly the fact that the courtroom erupted in laughter.

“The whole courtroom is laughing because he just slapped you on the behind,” McHugh said to Swickle, who was trying to explain that Johnson meant no disrespect and wasn’t looking for a reaction. “I’m not going to accept these plea negotiations.”

And just like that, Johnson taken away for a 30-day jail sentence.

On Tuesday, Swickle asked the judge to reconsider the term. Johnson will remain in jail until at least Monday, when another hearing is scheduled.

Officials say a Houston woman accused of stabbing her boyfriend to death with a stiletto high heel told police she was trying to protect herself.

Houston police say 44-year-old Ana Lilia Trujillo told investigators the man was attacking her and she acted in self-defense.

Trujillo was charged with murder in the Sunday stabbing death. In a statement Monday, the University of Houston identified the 59-year-old man killed at a luxury high-rise condominium as Alf Stefan Andersson, a research professor in the university’s biology and biochemistry department.

Police say officers answering an assault report found Andersson’s body on the floor with multiple stab wounds to the head.

Trujillo remained jailed Monday on $100,000 bail and had no attorney yet.

A 27-year-old woman in Broward County, Florida has filmed herself berating Dunkin’ Donuts employees in an apparent attempt to exact some kind of consumer justice.

Taylor Chapman, however, only succeeds in appearing rude, ignorant and racist in the video, which she posted on her Facebook page.

The imagined slight occurred the night prior, when a Dunkin’ Donuts employee apparently forgot to print Chapman’s receipt. In what Chapman seems to have construed as a mortal insult, the employee offered Chapman her entire order free the next time she entered the store to make up for the oversight.

This more than generous offer apparently boiled Chapman’s blood, and she entered the fast food outlet the next day armed with a camera phone and a bad attitude.

To the credit of Dunkin’ Donuts staff, they are unfailingly polite to Chapman, despite the insults, swearing and racial slurs spat at them.

In between orders of bacon and cheese croissants (bacon extra crispy), iced coffee with extra cream and extra sugar and a Strawberry Coolatta, which Chapman mistakenly thinks the workers have forgotten.

The eight minute and nine second ordeal begins with Chapman warning the male employee who serves her, ‘This is all being under video surveillance, OK?’

She then tells him her complaint: That a female employee the night before forgot to print out her receipt and then ‘turned into a complete rude b*tch’.

She neglects to explain exactly how the employee did her wrong though. ‘She told me, OK, you can get your order free next time. So you know what I told her? I want the whole f****n’ menu, b***h. Twice.’

According to Chapman, her lawyer is ‘already on it’ and she says she’d spoken to someone from the store earlier that day who told her she could have her order free.

The employee explains that he doesn’t know what happened the night before but reassures Chapman he’s happy to give her what she wants.

She begins to order, asking for the Strawberry Coolatta, which she admits was not one of the items she ordered the day before.

Chapman tells a fellow customer, ‘I just want my bacon crispy and my people nice, you know?’

‘Cos I literally thought this was the best one in the city, and I gave you guys so many good, like, remarks online because I have a business degree and, like, I really did until that b***h just completely p****d me off,’ she explains, reasonably.

Chapman attempts to engage her fellow customers in the video, but they aren’t forthcoming.

‘That’s your issue,’ says one man. ‘I’ve got my own issues.’ A receipt ain’t one, though, as he tells Chapman that he is always given his receipt at Dunkin’ Donuts.

‘I’m from Indiana in Kentucky,’ Chapman tells the man, ‘And up there this s**t doesn’t happen,’ she says, but goes on to mention that ‘One time they p*ssed in my fries where I’m from at home. Literally I could smell the p*ss.’

‘So I know they’re probably sh*ttin’ and p*ssin in it, because they really don’t give a sh*t,’ she says loudly.

‘That’s why I’m not eating this food, I’m giving it to my boyfriend.’

The worst is yet to come, though, when Chapman spies the woman she believed was rude to her the night before.

‘Well, guess what? This s**t’s about to go live, b***h. Right on Facebook,’ she rants.

‘Cause I already posted what your dumb ass did last night. So I hope you’re happy with your little f****g sand n****r self. Cause I’m about to nuke your whole f****g planet from Mars. You think ya’ll are tough big fat Arabs bombin’ the Trade Center? I’ll show you tough,’ she yells to the woman, who calmly goes about her business behind the counter.

Chapman’s LinkedIn profile says she’s currently the marketing manager for Comfort Care Medical Equipment, but according to The Smoking Gunthe company says she hasn’t worked there for more than a year.
