Police in southern Bangladesh say a woman cut off a man’s
penis during an alleged attempt to rape her and took it to a police station as
evidence.

The incident took place in Mirzapur village, Jhalakathi, about 200km (124
miles) south of the capital, Dhaka.

Monju Begum, 40, a married mother of three, told police that neighbour
Mozammel Haq Mazi forced his way into her shanty and started assaulting her.

Mr Mazi, who denies the accusation, has been admitted to a nearby
hospital.

“We will arrest him once his condition gets better,” police spokesman Abul
Khaer told the BBC.

“She said she fought back and cut off his penis and brought it to our police
station in a polythene bag to prove that Mr Mazi tried to rape her,” police
spokesman Abul Khaer told the BBC.

“She has registered a case accusing him of attempted rape,” he said.

“It is quite an unusual incident. As far as I am aware, this is the first
time that a woman has brought a severed penis to the police station as
evidence.”

Monju Begum told police that Mr Mazi, a married father of five, had been
harassing her for the past six months.

‘Revenge
attack’But Mr Mazi denied the allegations.

“We were having an affair and recently she suggested that both of us can go
and settle down in Dhaka,” Mr Mazi told the BBC from the hospital in nearby
Barisal.

“I refused and told her that I cannot leave my wife and children, so she took
revenge on me.”

Prof AMSM Sharfuzzaman, a senior surgeon at the Sher-e-Bangla Medical College
and Hospital in Barisal town, told the BBC it had not been possible to reattach
the organ.

“Police brought his severed penis several hours after the incident,” he
said.

“We are treating him so that he can urinate normally without the penis.”

Sepp Blatter has insisted that Fifa is not in crisis,
despite the “great damage” done to its image by ongoing corruption
allegations.

“Football is not in a crisis, only some difficulties,” said the Fifa
president.

Blatter brushed off suggestions, from the British government among others,
that Wednesday’s presidential election – for which he is the only candidate –
should be suspended.

“If governments try to intervene then something is wrong,” he said.

“I think Fifa is strong enough that we can deal with our problems inside
Fifa.”

Blatter, unusually appearing alone at a news conference in Zurich, gave a
defiant display despite the storm surrounding the organisation.

Analysis

“This was an absolutely extraordinary appearance by Sepp Blatter. Delusional,
one colleague said to me afterwards.

“The phrase that will stick in the mind is: ‘Crisis? What crisis?’ –
reminiscent of that famous newspaper headline during the Winter of Discontent.

“But Blatter is not playing to our audience, he’s playing to the members of
Fifa who he hopes will re-elect him.

“He wouldn’t deal with Mohamed Bin Hammam’s suspension, wouldn’t talk about
Jack Warner and his claims and wouldn’t talk about reopening the World Cup 2022
vote.

“After this conference there are so many questions. This is not going away
for Blatter.”

But he ended the news conference in an angry exchange with a German reporter
and talked of his time working as a journalist, complaining about a lack of
“respect” from some members of the media, warning them: “We are not in a bazaar;
we are in Fifa’s house.”

The 75-year-old Blatter insisted that a Football Association inquiry by
barrister James Dingemans QC looking into ex-FA and bid chairman Lord Triesman’s
claims of alleged Fifa impropriety had “found no elements” which would prompt
the world governing to investigate further.

This despite Dingemans’ report revealing that Fifa executive committee
Nicolas Leoz’s aide had asked for the FA Cup to be named after the Paraguayan
Exco member, who Triesman claimed in Parliament had demanded a knighthood from
England’s 2018 bid.

Fifa has now published
a summary of Dingemans’ report on its website
.

Sports minister Hugh Robertson had expressed
the British government’s displeasure at Fifa’s situation
last week, calling
for its presidential election to be suspended.

But Blatter argued neither governments nor anyone outside the Fifa membership
could have any bearing on the election process, and vowed to carry on unless
Wednesday’s congress decided otherwise.

“If somebody wants to change something in the election or in the congress of
Wednesday, these are the members of Fifa,” he said.

“This cannot be done by the executive committee, it cannot be done by any
authorities outside of Fifa – it’s only the congress itself that can do it.

“Congress will decide if I am a valid or non-valid candidate.”

Blatter is expected to stand unopposed in an election marred by a torrent of
dissent from within and beyond football’s world governing body.

The only rival candidate to emerge – Mohamed Bin Hammam, president of the
Asian Football Confederation (AFC) – pulled out having been suspended by Fifa’s
own ethics committee over allegations that financial incentives were offered to
Caribbean Football Union members.

Fifa vice-president Jack Warner, himself also suspended on similar grounds,
subsequently revealed an e-mail in which another high-ranking Fifa official,
secretary general Jerome Valcke, suggested Bin Hammam had “bought” the 2022
World Cup finals for Qatar.

Valcke has since attempted to clarify those
remarks
and Qatar 2022 itself issued a statement claiming that Valcke’s
words had been “taken out of context” and its bid had been “dragged through the
mud for absolutely no reason”.

Blatter, however, took pains to avoid dealing with the detail of the various
allegations as he faced reporters, saying only: “You should ask [Bin Hammam] why
he pulled out. I was prepared to go into an election process with another
candidate and then the congress would have decided. Now the situation has
changed.”

These arguments may now begin to damage the organisation’s commercial
interests as, earlier on Monday, two of Fifa’s largest sponsors – Coca-Cola and
Adidas – expressed concern at the widely publicised in-fighting.

“The current allegations being raised are distressing and bad for the sport,”
said a Coca-Cola spokesperson. “We have every expectation that Fifa will resolve
this situation in an expedient and thorough manner.”

An Adidas spokesman said: “The negative tenor of the public debate around
Fifa at the moment is neither good for football nor for Fifa and its
partners.”

FIFA ROW IN FIGURES

  • 35 – Number of nations controlled by Concacaf, from whose
presidency Jack Warner has been suspended
  • 75 – Age of Sepp Blatter, current Fifa president and only
candidate for election to the post on Wednesday
  • 107 – Years Fifa has been in existence. It celebrated its
birthday on 21 May. Blatter has worked at Fifa for 36 years and held the
    presidency since 1998
  • 208 – Number of nations represented in the Fifa congress,
which will vote to elect a new president on Wednesday
  • 40,000 – Amount, in dollars, Caribbean Football Union (CFU)
leaders are alleged to have been offered to back Mohamed bin Hammam’s
    presidential bid
  • 360,000 – Cost, in dollars, borne by Bin Hammam to provide
travel and accommodation to 25 CFU members, as detailed in Bin Hammam’s
    submission to Fifa’s ethics committee
  • 1,000,000 – Cash gift, in dollars, Warner claims Blatter
gave to Concacaf “to spend as it sees fit”
  • 2,500,000 – Amount, in pounds, Lord Triesman claimed Warner
wanted from England’s 2018 bid team for an educational project in Trinidad and
Tobago. An inquiry has since cleared Warner
  • 29,600,000 – Outlay, in pounds, from Australia on its
unsuccessful bid to host the 2022 World Cup. Australian senator Nick Xenophon
has demanded Fifa refund it in full

Though insistent that the election process and the Qatar World Cup 2022 bid
had not been undermined by recent revelations, Blatter admitted Fifa’s
reputation stands at a low ebb.

“I have tried for years to make Fifa’s reputation the highest possible,” he
said. “I regret what has happened in the last few days and weeks, [causing]
great damage to the image of Fifa and a lot of disappointment for football fans.

“When I entered Fifa 36 years ago, we had no problems. We had no problems
until 1998, this was the so-called ‘very modest’ Fifa. Now we are a
‘comfortable’ Fifa. I think we are too comfortable and some people like that.

“We are in a game and all the little devils can enter the game. We have to
fight against these devils. We have started to fight.

“We are in a very bad situation but, starting on Wednesday, the football
family has the opportunity and they have to take it: if they want to restore the
credibility of Fifa, and if they want to restore it with me.”

As Blatter took to the podium in Zurich, Warner – one of the four members
named by Triesman – issued his own statement welcoming the FA-commissioned
inquiry which exonerated him.

“Today, I regained some hope in the power of truth and transparency,”
Warner’s statement read.

“The report of the independent investigator on the allegations of Lord
Triesman has proven once again that whenever the truth is told, people will
always be able to have their names exonerated.”

Meanwhile, a Conservative MP who sits on the Culture, Media and Sport Select
Committee has called for Wednesday’s Fifa election to be suspended and put
forward his own agenda for the reform of the organisation.

Damian Collins, the MP for Folkestone and Hythe, has worked with the ChangeFifa organisation to set out a
five-point plan, inviting “parliamentarians and elected representatives from all
the nations of the world to register their support”.

Collins calls for the
immediate suspension of the election
and an independent inquiry followed by
voting reform, increased transparency regarding decisions taken and Fifa
finances, and limits to the number of terms Fifa members may serve as president
or on the organisation’s executive committee.

China’s Zhang Jilong has assumed temporary charge of the AFC in the wake of
Bin Hammam’s suspension, while Lisle Austin of Barbados is to stand in for
Warner as the president of Concacaf.

After finishing second in the last two Indianapolis 500s, Dan Wheldon crossed the finish line when rookie J.R. Hildebrand crashed into the wall on the final turn. While Hildebrand was able to get his car past the line, Wheldon was able to overtake him and capture his second Indy 500 victory, having won the 2005 race. Hildebrand finished second and Graham Rahal, who started 29th, finished third.

Hildebrand entered the final lap having passed Bertrand Baguette for the lead. Danica Patrick crept into the top 10 late in the race and held the lead ever so briefly before she needed to head to the pit.

Wheldon hails from England, but he raced in a car that was decorated in commemoration of Ronald Reagan’s centennial birth date.

A hundred years is a long time. How long? When the Indianapolis 500-Mile Race was first held in 1911, the RMS Titanicwas still under construction in Ireland, Orville and Wilbur Wright were touring the country and showing folks their newfangled “aeroplane,” and Yale University had America’s best college football program.

The racing machines that will tour the 2.5-mile rounded rectangle located at the crossroads of 16th Street and Georgetown Road in Speedway, Indiana during this year’s Indianapolis 500 are a long way removed from the Marmon Wasp that Ray Harroun drove to victory in the first Indy 500 at a whopping 74.602 mph average speed. By comparison, Canadian Alex Tagliani drove his No. 77 Bowers & Wilkins Dallara-Honda to the top spot in qualifying with a four-lap average speed of 227.472mph, which is fast enough for a commercial airliner to get airborne.

This year is the centennial of what is known (and trademarked) as the Greatest Spectacle in Racing, although not the 100th running of the event due to a hiatus brought on by World War II. The race is an annual American tradition that transcends the boundaries of its sport, much like the Kentucky Derby, the Super Bowl and the Masters. With 2011 being the 100th anniversary of the first race, race organizers expect an extra level of attention for the event to go along with over a quarter-million race fans in attendance – still the largest single-day sports gathering in the world.

Those extra eyes will have lucked into seeing some of the toughest competition the Indianapolis Motor Speedway has seen in decades. Although the tagline created for this year’s event – “The Most Important Race in History” – seems a little egregious, there is no doubt that it will be one of the most exciting and unpredictable Indy 500s in decades. The IZOD IndyCar Series, the sanctioning body that oversees the Indy 500, is overhauling the series’ race cars for 2012 with new bodies and new engines, meaning that there is a surplus of soon-to-be-obsolete 2011-vintage cars. That surfeit of machinery has opened the doors to a talent pool of drivers as deep as any All-Star team in any sport and closed the performance gap to mere fractions of a second.

Time trials for the Indy 500 were the ultimate proof of how razor-thin the margins were between success and failure. Tagliani’s four-lap average speed was only nine-hundredths of a second faster than New Zealand’s Scott Dixon, who will start in the middle of row one. Dixon actually ran out of fuel at the end of his fourth and final qualifying lap – proving that luck can be the residue of preparation.

For Tagliani, the pole win was doubly sweet, as it marked the first pole position at Indianapolis for Sam Schmidt Motorsports. Schmidt, a former IndyCar driver who was rendered a quadriplegic after a testing accident in 2000, has spent the intervening years balancing building a racing empire with dedicated philanthropy. With three cars bearing his stamp in the top-six qualifiers, Schmidt has emerged as a legitimate contender against the mighty Penske Racing and Chip Ganassi Racing powerhouse teams.

As is usual at Indianapolis, there were a myriad of other compelling human dramas that played out in qualifying: past Indy 500 winners Dan Wheldon and Buddy Rice qualifying in the first three rows in one-off efforts without full-season rides; local Hoosier favorite Ed Carpenter putting former driver Sarah Fisher’s machine into the Fast Nine qualifiers; defending Indy 500 and IZOD IndyCar Series champion Dario Franchitti running out of fuel on the third of his four qualifying laps; three-time race winner Helio Castroneves qualifying a dismal 16th; Swiss driver Simona de Silvestro qualifying a backup car in 23rd place on Pole Day, less than a day after a vicious practice crash that left her with second- and third-degree burns on her hands; fan favorite Paul Tracy defying an intensifying rainstorm and slipping and sliding his way to the fastest qualifying time of Bump Day; Briton Alex Lloyd putting it all on the line on the last of his three attempts and getting his Dale Coyne Racing car into the field.

Perhaps no drama was more intense during time trials than the one surrounding Andretti Autosport during last-chance Bump Day qualifying. With five cars attempting to make the field, only one of them – John Andretti, cousin of AA team owner Michael Andretti and racing in a one-off with NASCAR legend Richard Petty – qualified on Pole Day. During Bump Day, a rain delay threatened to send Danica Patrick home without a starting spot before the track was dried and she was able to put her car in the show. Mike Conway, who made international headlines with a horrifying late-race accident in the 2010 Indy 500, failed to make the race after winning the Grand Prix of Long Beach earlier this season. And Marco Andretti, grandson of Mario Andretti, had to bump his way into the field at the expense of teammate Ryan Hunter-Reay – forcing Andretti Autosport to resort to the controversial, though legal, fallback option of buying out 19th-place qualifier Bruno Junqueira’s race seat from A.J. Foyt to get Hunter-Reay and his sponsors back in the race.

What can be predicted for today’s running of the Indianapolis 500? Only that nothing is predictable. 100 years of history attest to the fact that nothing is decided until the twin checkers fly to end the race. Still, there are plenty of intriguing storylines to follow:

  • Can Helio Castroneves become the first foreign-born driver and only the fourth person in history to win four Indianapolis 500s?
  • Is this the year a female driver wins the Greatest Spectacle in Racing, with four women – Simona de Silvestro (23rd), Danica Patrick (26th), Pippa Mann (31st), and Ana Beatriz (32nd) – in the starting field?
  • Can Penske Racing and Andretti Autosport overcome their qualifying woes to challenge for the victory?
  • Will Sam Schmidt complete the Cinderella story and put one of his drivers’ faces on the Borg-Warner Trophy?
  • Is this the year a legacy driver – for instance, Marco Andretti or Graham Rahal – follows in his famous families’ footsteps to drink the milk in Victory Lane at Indianapolis?
  • Does a driver with diabetes – Charlie Kimball – have a shot to win the greatest single prize in American motorsports?
  • Will the new double-file restart rule – requiring cars to be lined up in two columns when returning to green-flag racing after a caution instead of single-file – cause issues on the racetrack?

As the hours, and minutes tick closer to the start of the 100th Indianapolis 500, so does the anticipation. On Sunday, people from around the world will descend on the famed Brickyard – enough to make the racetrack the second-largest city in Indiana – to share in the nostalgia and traditions, to sing “Back Home Again in Indiana,” and to watch thirty-three of the world’s top race car drivers take the green flag in eleven rows of three.

After that… who knows what will happen? No one knows – but the joy, as always, is in finding out.
