The Calgary Flames have announced that former Stanley Cup winner Bob Hartley will be their new head coach.
Hartley, 51, succeeds Brent Sutter behind the bench.
The club has called a press conference for 12:30 p.m. MT.
“Bob has won at every level he has coached, from the QMJHL to the AHL to the NHL to Switzerland, and we are confident he is going to continue his winning ways in Calgary,” Flames general manager Jay Feaster said in a statement.
“He is a tireless worker, an outstanding motivator, a great bench boss and game strategist; and a teacher at heart.”
Colorado won the Stanley Cup in 2001 and reached the Western Conference final on three other occasions under Hartley before he was fired after a disappointing start to the 2002-03 season.
Later that season, he began a tenure as Atlanta’s head coach that lasted until early in 2007-08. Hartley led the franchise to what is still its only playoff berth.
Prior to his NHL experience, Hartley held coaching jobs in the AHL and Quebec juniors.
Hartley, who has been coaching ZSC Lions in Switzerland, was also rumoured to be a candidate for Montreal’s coaching vacancy.
Calgary has not made the postseason since 2008, and last won a playoff round four years earlier, the season they reached the Stanley Cup final.
Bob Hartley was born on September 7th, 1960 according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Hartley
