One of the original health and fitness experts, Jack LaLanne, is dead at 96
Jack LaLanne, America’s most recognized health and fitness expert, died on Sunday afternoon at his home in Morro Bay, California. The health and fitness guru was 96.
Health and fitness guru Jack LaLanne was known by many generations, with The Jack LaLanne Show spawning four decades, from 50s to the 80s. Jack LaLanne and his health and fitness show was a staple on television, as he encouraged many generations to exercise, eat right, and embark on a health and fitness program to stay in shape.
Health and fitness expert Jack LaLanne was known to the more current generation with his multiple appearances on the CNN show Larry King Live and as a spokesperson for health and fitness juices on late night infomercials.
Jack LaLanne started bodybuilding back in the early 1950s, and was performing strength and endurance stunts with regularity, showing that his health and fitness regimen was the motivation for completing the stunts successfully. Jack LaLanne once did over a thousand pushups in just over 20 minutes.
A spokesperson said that Jack LaLanne died due to respiratory complications that arose from his recent bout with pneumonia. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Elaine.
Larry King, who was a close friend of Jack LaLanne, issued a statement on Sunday night.
“There was no one like Jack LaLanne,” King said Sunday night. “He would go on forever … a true guru. I guess Charles Atlas from the old comic books would be the predecessor for Jack LaLanne.”
“Elderly people were encouraged by him because he just kept on going.”
Larry also said that modern health and fitness experts benefited from the example that Jack LaLanne provided.
Elaine LaLanne, health and fitness guru Jack LaLanne’s wife of 51 years, said:
“I have not only lost my husband and a great American icon, but the best friend and most loving partner anyone could ever hope for.”
