Pedro Martinez emerged surprisingly from left field Sunday night and threw out the ceremonial first pitch for the Boston Red Sox prior to their game against the New York Yankees, highlighting a typically grand scale production on opening night in Beantown.

Martinez, of course, was the best pitcher of his generation and perhaps the pitcher to string together the best four or five-year span in Red Sox history.

But his appearance Sunday was a surprise. And a nice one, at that.

The moment was a little drawn out – Martinez seemed to take 10 minutes to walk from the short porch in left to the pitcher’s mound – and the whole event was typical of the current Boston Red Sox management, toeing the line between touching ceremony and cheesy over-production.

But Martinez still brought smiles to the 38,000 or so in the Fenway stands, and he was genuinely touched by the ovation he received. His appearance was a fine touch indeed, bringing back some of the magic from the 2004 season that turned the franchise’s history around forever.

Nomar retired as a member of the Red Sox earlier this spring. And Sunday Pedro took the field in a Sox uniform one final time. As a fan of the Beantown club, it’s the kind of karma you want kicking off a much-anticipated season.
