Two parents from The Pas in northern Manitoba are blaming local hospital staff for the death of their newborn son.
Alice Buck and Clinton Bignell were looking forward to celebrating the birth of their son last week, but instead they buried him.
“I feel like I am going through a nightmare still,” Bignell told CBC News.
“It’s unreal. I can’t believe this happened.”
Buck said she went to the hospital in The Pas, less than two weeks before her due date, because she was bleeding and in extreme pain.
Upon arriving at the hospital, Buck was told she had a bladder infection and was sent home — even though a doctor never saw her, she said.
Then about 3½ hours later, Buck said she returned to the hospital, still bleeding and in pain.
Both Buck and Bignell said it took two hours for the doctor to show up.
Then it appeared the doctor did not know how to operate the ultrasound machine, the couple added.
By the time an emergency caesarean section was done, Buck said she knew it was too late for their baby.
“I already knew for myself he was gone because the heartbeat monitoring wasn’t even beeping,” she said.
Helga Bryant, chief executive officer of the Northern Regional Health Authority, told CBC News she is fast-tracking the investigation into what she called a critical incident.
“We are very regretful that the family experienced this loss,” Bryant said.
Buck said she feels “depression, because I don’t have my son here anymore.
“I want my son back,” she said.
