Dick Beals, the voice of Speedy Alka-Seltzer, photographed in 1992

May 31, 2012, 5:09 p.m.

Dick Beals, a voice actor best known for injecting youthful enthusiasm into the character of Speedy Alka-Seltzer in mid-20th century television commercials for the pain remedy, has died. He was 85.

Beals, whose radio and television career spanned seven decades, died Tuesday at Vista Gardens Memory Care in Vista, said his friend Peter Gorman.

“He was one of the great voice actors of all time,” Ron Simon, curator of TV and radio at the Paley Center for Media, told The Times on Wednesday. “He was one of those anonymous people who pioneered what animation would become today.”

Beals’ notable stop-motion animation roles included originating the voice of the title character in the late 1950s in “The Gumby Show.” He was also the voice of the first Davey in the early 1960s for the television series “Davey and Goliath,” a show “that meant a lot to many people,” Simon said.

As the result of a glandular condition, Beals stood 4 feet 6 inches tall, weighed less than 70 pounds and possessed a voice that hadn’t changed since grade school.

His childlike voice became his lifelong calling card after the manager of the radio station at what is now Michigan State University steered Beals — then a student with broadcasting aspirations — toward radio dramas in the 1940s.

He was first heard in such shows as “The Lone Ranger” and “The Green Hornet,” which were recorded at a Detroit radio station, and later on “Dragnet” and “Gunsmoke.”

After moving to Hollywood in 1952, Beals was asked to read for the part of Speedy Alka-Seltzer, a slightly goofy, animated sprite who wore an Alka-Seltzer tablet as a hat while another tablet formed his body.

With Beals reciting commercial lines and singing the fizzy tablet’s praises, the character was featured in more than 200 commercials that aired from 1954 to 1964. The ad campaign is considered “one of the classics of all time,” Simon said.

Commercials became Beals’ main source of work, and his vocal talents were featured in more than 3,000 of them, The Times reported in 1992. He was an unseen pitchman for Oscar Mayer, Campbell’s Soup, Bob’s Big Boy and many others.

“I’m the voice of little babies to 15-year-olds. In cartoons, I have also been the voice of all kinds of animals — parrots, chipmunks, birds, rabbits, you name it,” Beals said in 1992.

Between 1955 and 2005, Beals performed in at least 25 television projects. He voiced the sidekicks Yank and Dan in the 1965 animated series “Roger Ramjet” and was heard on the soundtrack singing with Gene Kelly in the 1967 NBC television special “Jack and the Beanstalk.”

“So many people experienced his great voice but, unfortunately, did not know his name,” Simon said. “His unique voice really helped make animation in the 1950s and 1960s.”

Nearly 300 boys tried out for the role of N.J. Normanmeyer in the early 1990s animated series “The Addams Family,” but Beals nabbed the part when he was 65.

“Once directors found there was a college graduate who could do children’s voices, they didn’t have to call those nutty mothers anymore and ask them to get Junior to do the part,” Beals told the Lansing, Mich., State Journal in 2007. “I could do any voice, boy or girl.”

Richard Beals was born March 16, 1927, in Detroit and was the middle child of three brothers. He has no immediate survivors.

As a child, he was too small to play sports so started cheerleading for his local high school at age 7. At Michigan State, he was a member of the cheerleading squad and earned his bachelor’s degree in 1949.

Seeking a small-town existence, Beals moved in 1970 from the Los Angeles area to Escondido, where he opened an ad agency, coached Little League and served as a high school sports announcer.

A private pilot, he often commuted to Los Angeles for work in his own plane.

Later in life, he was a motivational speaker who turned to his 1992 autobiography to inspire audiences. He called his book “Think Big.”

A golf coach at Moreno Valley High School was arrested Thursday on suspicion of having sex with a 17-year-old student.

The suspect, David Brohamer, has been a teacher at the Riverside County school since 2006 and coaches boys’ and girls’ golf.

According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, on May 24 a student told a school resource officer that Brohamer was having a relationship with a student at the school.

Detectives tracked down the student and “confirmed an inappropriate sexual relationship occurred between Mr. Brohamer and the victim,’’ according to a statement released by the law enforcement agency. Investigators determined that the relationship began when the victim was 17 and continued for several months.

A 21-year-old college student accused of killing a housemate told police he ate the victim’s heart and part of his brain after he died.

Alexander Kinyua hid the head and hands of the dead man in his family’s basement laundry room in a suburb of Baltimore, according to the Harford County Sheriff’s Office. Kinyua, a student at Morgan State University, was charged earlier in May in another attack in which the victim was brutally beaten but survived.

Kinyua, a Kenya native, is charged with first-degree murder and other charges in the death of 37-year-old Kujoe Bonsafo Agyei-Kodie. He was ordered held on no bail.

His public defender did not return a call seeking comment, and a voicemail left at Kinyua’s home was not returned.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Monica Worrell said the chief medical examiner had not yet officially identified the body parts, but that authorities believe they are those of Kodie, who was reported missing May 25. His cellphone and wallet were left in the home and police were initially told he had gone for a run.

On Tuesday, Kinyua’s father, Antony Kinyua, called detectives and reported that another son, Jarrod, found what he thought were human remains in the house where they all lived in Joppatowne.

Jarrod found two metal tins, which held a human head and two human hands. Police say Jarrod confronted his brother, who said the remains were animals.

According to charging documents, Jarrod and his father went to the basement, where Jarrod “observed that the items he observed were gone and Alex Kinyua was cleaning the container he observed them in.”

Detectives obtained a search warrant and found the head and hands in the house. Police say Alexander Kinyua admitted to killing Kodie by cutting him up with a knife and eating his heart and part of his brain.

Authorities say Kinyua told detectives the rest of the body could be found in a trash container at the Town Baptist Church in Harford County where they discovered remains.

The attack comes in the same week as a man in Miami chewed away another man’s face along a busy highway and wouldn’t stop until an officer shot him to death. Witnesses say 31-year-old Rudy Eugene growled at the officer and continued to chew away. The victim, identified as 65-year-old Ronald Poppo, a homeless man who lived under the causeway, was in critical condition and will be permanently disfigured.

On May 19, Kinyua beat a man with a baseball bat on Morgan’s campus, fracturing his skull and making him lose sight in one eye, according to Baltimore police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.

Kinyua was arrested May 20 and released on $220,000 bail.

Morgan officials say Kinyua studied electrical engineering and was also in the ROTC.

According to court records, the victim, Kodie, a native of Ghana, was convicted in November 2008 in Baltimore County of sex offense and assault in September 2007 and harassment, stalking and telephone misuse for making repeated calls in 2007 and 2008 to a woman. He was sentenced to at least a year and a half in jail.

ht elizabeth olivas ll 120531 wblog Star Student in Immigration Flap Will Be Home For Graduation
May 31, 2012            4:52pm

High school senior Elizabeth Olivas is coming home. After getting caught up on an immigration technicality in her native Mexico, the Frankfort Indiana High School homecoming queen will get to walk with her classmates at graduation on Saturday.

The U.S. State Department confirmed to her immigration lawyer, Sarah L. Moshe,  that Olivas was given a visa to come back to the United States, Moshe told ABC News.

“The waiver was approved, and we just finished issuing and printing her visa,” an email from the State Department  said.  “We gave her the visa packet and I assume she will be leaving the Consulate momentarily (visa in hand!).  Congrats and best of luck to Elizabeth and her family!  She is very lucky to have such a great team working on her behalf.”

Olivas has lived in the U.S. since the age 4, and her father is a naturalized U.S. citizen. But after turning 18, according to the law, she had 180 days to return to Mexico  to apply for a long-term visa to the United States.  Without that visa she would become an illegal immigrant. So she and her father took the trip down to the Juarez consulate, only to realize they counted dates wrong because of leap year. Olivas was late by one day, initially told she would not be issued her long-term visa and without a  “humanitarian parole” visa waiver, she would not  be able to enter the United States again for three years.

But even the waiver process can be complicated. Waivers can take anywhere from three to eight months to be issued. Olivas couldn’t wait that long. She’d already been in Mexico for six weeks,  missing most of her high school senior milestones, including  prom and an academic achievement ceremony. With a near 4.0 grade point average, the star athlete is set to graduate as one of the top students at the school.  She is also supposed to give the salutation speech at graduation, which seemed an unlikely fete before her case received a global outcry.

The Indianapolis Star initially reported the story but newspapers and Web sites around the world, including ABC News.com.

Sarah L. Moshe received a text message from Elizabeth OLIVAS that read, “JUST GOT OUT VISA IN MY HANDS.  IM COMING HOME!  THANK YOU SO MUCH, IM SOO HAPPY!”

High school senior  Elizabeth Olivas thought she would be enjoying the last days at her Indiana high school with her classmates before graduating on Saturday.

Instead, the Frankfort High School homecoming queen is in her native Mexico, caught up in an immigration technicality that has her future in the United States straddled between U.S. government agencies, according to the Indianapolis Star.

Frankfort high school Principal Steve Edwards told the Star that students were sad at the thought of Olivas not being with them for graduation and that the situation was one of the hardest things he’s ever dealt with.

“This is a very skilled, talented, beautiful young lady,” he said.

But now Olivas and her classmates will be able to celebrate both their graduation and her homecoming.  She told her lawyer via text message that she was excited and grateful.

“JUST GOT OUT VISA IN MY HANDS,” read the text. ” IM COMING HOME!  THANK YOU SO MUCH, IM SOO HAPPY!”

Moshe told ABC News Olivas and her family are grateful for all the attention and concern over the teen’s plight.

“We take this opportunity to thank everyone for the outpouring of support for Elizabeth and her family,” Moshe said. “She will certainly enjoy a well-deserved graduation celebration on Saturday!”

ap spelling bee winner nandipati lt 120531 wblog Snigdha Nandipati Spells Guetapens to Win the National Spelling Bee

May 31, 2012           10:19pm

The winning word meant “ambush, snare or trap,” but Snigdha Nandipati of San Diego didn’t fall for it.

G-U-E-T-A-P-E-N-S, she spelled, correctly, nailing the word with the French derivation.

“It’s a miracle,” she said after her spelling of ”guetapens” clinched victory in the 85th Scripps National Spelling Bee in Oxon Hill, Md., this evening.

Nandipati, who’d been to the spelling bee once before,  defeated a total of 278 contestants.

“I knew it. I had seen it before. I just wanted to ask everything I could before I started spelling,” Nandipati said.

Jordan Hoffman from Kansas City was the first finalist eliminated – for misspelling “canities.”

In the 10th round, Arvind Mahankali grabbed third place after incorrectly spelling “schwannoma.”

That left Stuti Mishra of Orlando, Fla., to go head-to-head with Nandipati. Mishra misspelled the word “schwarmerei.”

Out of 11 million kids from across the globe, nine competed in the finals round. Those nine included Frank Cahill, Emma Ciereszynski, Lena Greenberg, Hoffman, Mahankali, Mishra, Nandipati, Nicholas Rushlow, and Gifton Wright from Jamaica.

All participants in the finals round were 14 years old, except for Mahankali, who was 12.

This year’s spelling bee also brought the youngest contestant in history, 6-year-old Lori Anne Madison of Lake Ridge, Va.

Madison fell four points short of making the semifinals and told the Washington Post that stress and fatigue led to her misspelling onstage.

“I was really disappointed that I misspelled the word. I knew the word,” Madison told The Washington Post. “It was just too bad that I misspelled the word.”

According to ESPN, some contestants spend up to 600 hours studying for the bee.

For Nicholas Rushlow, who was eliminated in the ninth round after competing for the past five years, just seeing supporters made all the work worthwhile.

“I know there are a lot of friends out there watching me,” Rushlow said. “I just want to say thanks y’all.”

The Chinese actress who starred in “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” “Memoirs of a Geisha” and “Rush Hour 2” has angrily denied selling her sexual favors to a disgraced official of the ruling Chinese Communist Party for $1 million per night.

A story in the Hong Kong tabloid newspaper Apple Daily alleged that Zhang Ziyi provided her sexual services in exchange for close to $1 million U.S. dollars a night to former Commerce Minister Bo Xilai and other clients. The Apple Daily, Hong Kong’s second-best-selling paper and a frequent critic of the Chinese regime, also alleged that Ziyi had earned $110 million over four years via prostitution.

Ziyi, whose absence from last week’s Cannes premiere of her latest movie, “Dangerous Liaisons,” was noted by the international media, has issued a heated denial of the charges.

According to the Apple Daily, Zhang Ziyi’s main client was Bo Xilai, who allegedly had sex with her 11 times between 2007 and 2011. The report alleges Ziyi amassed 110 million dollars from these and trysts with other clients arranged by a prominent billionaire businessman, Xu Ming.

On Tuesday, a Hong Kong law firm representing Zhang Ziyi dismissed the report.

“Your allegations concerning our client are completely untrue and constitute a grave libel upon her,” said the firm’s statement to the Apple Daily. The firm demanded a full and prompt retraction and apology and reserved the right to legal action.

Zhang Ziyi’s publicist issued a stern statement vowing accountability. “This time, we are telling those rumor-makers that we will respond. We will prove our side of the story; we’ll seek legal justice; we’ll find you in the darkest corner and go after you,” the online statement read.”

Bo Xilai, though the scion of a family prominent in the Chinese Communist Party, has been hit with a series of scandals involving corruption and abuse of power in recent months leading to his highly unusual dismissal from the party. The most recent scandal involves accusations that his wife orchestrated the murder of a British businessman, Neil Heywood, because of a conflict of interest. Bo became head of the Communist Party in Chongqing in 2007 after serving as Commerce Minister. He was fired as local party chief in March 2012 and suspended from China’s ruling Politburo in April.

Xu, a long-standing associate of Bo, is also reportedly under investigation in China for corruption.

An Oklahoma teen was shot and killed the day after her high school graduation, just yards from her home, leading police to believe the bullet was fired from a “high-powered rifle.”

Kayla Ferrante, 17, graduated from her Tulsa, Okla., high school Friday, a year early in order to jump-start a career working with special-needs students, which her family said was her passion.

After a family celebration Saturday, she went to a friend’s house and later that night headed for home with her boyfriend driving.

“She was headed home with her boyfriend trying to make a midnight curfew and she was within a half block of her residence when shots were fired at the car they were in, striking her one time and ultimately causing her death,” Det. Victor Regalado of the Tulsa Police Department said.

Regalado said “several” shots were fired, but the one that hit Kayla pierced the license plate on the back of the car, shot through the trunk and hit her in the back before passing through her.

“Based on the penetration, as well as some other things that we’ve collected, we were able to determine that it was a high-powered weapon,” Regalado said. He declined to disclose the model of the weapon.

Kayla was rushed to a hospital where she died during surgery, according to authorities. Her boyfriend was not injured in the shooting.

With no witnesses or suspects, authorities are asking for the public’s help and searching for a motive in the killing.

“There are a variety of potential motives, but nothing solid at this point,” Regalado said. “We’re exploring the fact that this could be a random shooting, that it was intentional, that either one of them could have been a target, or both.”

Regalado said authorities are still investigating Kayla and her boyfriend’s backgrounds, but preliminary investigations show, “Neither one of them appears to have been involved in any type of high-risk behavior, like drugs or gangs.”

When asked whether there were any security cameras in the neighborhood that might have captured the shooting, Regalado said, “No comment.”

He said authorities are asking for help from any potential witnesses or even people whose spouses or significant others might have arrived home late Saturday night and acted strangely.

“At this stage in the investigation, we’re open to anything,” he said. “There’s somebody out there that saw something.”

Kayla’s family did not respond to a request for comment, but released a statement expressing gratitude for the community’s concern and support and said they did not want Kayla to be “portrayed as an anonymous teenager who was shot or a crime statistic.”

“She was a wonderful young woman who was a beloved daughter, big sister, niece, granddaughter, friend and girlfriend,” the statement said. “She had found her calling in life, which was to work with children with disabilities and planned to volunteer at Little Lighthouse this summer, while also taking her first college course.”

The family said Kayla was always concerned with others and would always help friends through difficult times and protect her little brother. She had recently gone on a mission trip to work with children.

“As her family and friends, we cannot understand who would do this or why and desperately want anyone with information to do the right thing and come forward,” they wrote. “Kayla was doing nothing wrong. She wasn’t in a place she shouldn’t have been, she was just a girl coming home before curfew.”

The Walt Disney Co. has named Hollywood veteran Alan Horn chairman of the Walt Disney Studios. He’ll take the reins of the Burbank entertainment giant’s struggling movie operation after the rocky tenure of ousted chief Rich Ross.

Horn assumes the helm on June 11, with responsibilities to oversee production, distribution and marketing of live-action and animated films from Disney and its units Pixar Animation Studios and Marvel. Horn is a seasoned and well-regarded executive, who as president and chief operating officer of Warner Bros. Entertainment oversaw such successful recent film franchises as Harry Potter and Batman.

“Alan not only has an incredible wealth of knowledge and experience in the business, he has a true appreciation of movie making as both an art and a business,”Walt Disney Co.Chief Executive Robert A. Iger said in a statement. “He’s earned the respect of the industry for driving tremendous, sustained creative and financial success, and is also known and admired for his impeccable taste and integrity.”

Horn will be under enormous pressure to bring stability back to Disney Studios, which was roiled by management upheaval and box-office troubles under Ross. Under his tenure, the studio took a $200-million write-down on the costly sci-fi adventure film “John Carter.”

“I’m incredibly excited about joining The Walt Disney Company, one of the most iconic and beloved entertainment companies in the world,” Horn said in a statement.

Horn was pushed out of Warner Bros. last year after a largely successful 12-year run. Time Warner Chief Executive Jeff Bewkes chose not to renew Horn’s contract when he extended studio chairman Barry Meyer’s deal through 2013 and set up a bake-off among television chief Bruce Rosenblum, home entertainment chief Kevin Tsujihara, and film chief Jeff Robinov for the top position.

The new Disney studio head had close relationships at Warner with prickly creative talent like director Clint Eastwood and “Potter” author J.K. Rowling, experience that will serve him well in dealing with such big personalities as “Pirates of the Caribbean” producer Jerry Bruckheimer, filmmaker Steven Spielberg and Pixar’s and Disney Animation’s creative guru John Lasseter.

Horn was known for personally preferring less raunchy fare, spending more of his time on the “Potter” movies and the animated “Happy Feet” than the R-rated “Hangover,” a sensibility that should mesh well with the Disney family brand.

Since leaving Warner last spring, Horn has served as an executive producer on Warner’s upcoming pair of “Hobbit” movies, helping to manage relations with director Peter Jackson, and is also a consultant on the studio’s stage business.

Prior to joining Warner Bros., Horn co-founded Castle Rock Entertainment, where he served as chairman and chief executive. He oversaw the creation of many critically acclaimed and beloved films including best picture Oscar nominees and hits like “A Few Good Men” and “The Shawshank Redemption.” Horn has also served as president and chief operating officer of Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation and was chairman and chief executive of Embassy Communications.

Big wheels keep on turning.

Gus Martinez, a veteran LAPD officer, is attempting to break the world record for the longest Ferris wheel ride. The Carson resident boarded the Ferris wheel at the Santa Monica Pier early Thursday morning and, if successful, he will step off Friday morning, 25 hours later.

“It’s a very smooth ride. It’s enjoyable so far,” a cheerful Martinez said by phone four hours into his effort.

The record attempt is sponsored by a partnership between Pacific Park and the Special Olympics to help raise money for the athletic program for persons with disabilities.

Officials said Martinez was a natural choice. His son, Jason, is a Special Olympics athlete with Down syndrome and Martinez coaches several of the organization’s sport teams.

Prospective Ferris wheel record-breakers must follow strict guidelines established by Guinness World Records. Martinez cannot sleep and he’s allowed only a five-minute bathroom break for every hour he’s on the Ferris wheel. However, he can accumulate the time to take a longer break.

The current record of 24 hours, 30 minutes was set in Dublin, Ireland, in October.

But Martinez came prepared for the adventure.

“I’ve got snacks and energy drinks to keep me up,” he said, adding that his long shifts as a detective with the Los Angeles Police Department have helped prepare him for the challenge.

Park officials have made several accommodations to give Martinez a more comfortable ride. They installed special seating with additional padding, and attached a solar panel so that he has electricity to power his flat-screen TV, iPad and cellphone.

One thing the Guinness World Records folks do allow is visitors. So far, his wife and some coworkers have joined him for part of the ride, said Jeff Klocke, a spokesman for Pacific Park.

“Boredom is the biggest issue, not going ’round and ’round,” he said.

Other riders are welcome to join and visit Martinez throughout the day. Parkgoers can ride the Ferris wheel from 8 p.m. to midnight for $5. Fares will be donated to Special Olympics Southern California.

THE BOURNE LEGACY

Jeremy Renner is already in the top-grossing movie of the year, The Avengers, starred in the 2008 Best Picture Oscar-winning The Hurt Locker, and held his own as part of Tom Cruise‘s Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol globetrotting crew.

But now with The Bourne Legacy he’s jumping into one of our favorite movie franchises ever: So how does he hold up against the legacy of Matt Damon as Jason Bourne?

And we have to say he does pretty darn good, based on this trailer.

Here, Renner plays a fellow Treadstone assassin who goes on the run from bad guy Ed Norton after Bourne blows the cover off the program, and he shows remarkable skill at punching, jumping, driving, killing, shooting and delivering grim one-liners to Rachel Weisz.

While this film reportedly came about because Damon and Paul Greengrass, director of the last two films in the trilogy, didn’t feel they had a script ready to go and opted out, the trailer for this extension suggests that Legacy will feature all the essentials of a Bourne film: a conflicted killer hero, a global reach, some very grungy hotel rooms and a whole bunch of incredible stunts and chases.

And Matt Damon.

Wait, what? In a strange twist, the trailer includes scenes with Joan Allen and David Straithairn that seem spun from the conclusion of the last film—as well as a photo of Damon as Bourne on a news report. While we figure it’s a clever way of intertwining Renner’s tale with Damon’s, we also have to wonder whether it’s an homage—or something else—to the absent Bourne star.

Either way, this all looks pretty intriguing…and just the thing to tide us over until Damon and Greengrass return for another go.

The Bourne Legacy hits screens August 3.

The jury in the federal campaign finance case against former Senator John Edwards said Thursday that it had found him not guilty on one of the six counts against him, and the judge declared a mistrial on the others.

The verdict came on the third count, which involved donations from the heiress Rachel Mellon. Mrs. Mellon gave more than $725,000 to help Mr. Edwards during his 2008 presidential campaign, during which large sums were spent to cover up an affair between Mr. Edwards and a former staff videographer, Rielle Mellon, with whom he conceived a daughter.

The third count involves a $200,000 check Mrs. Mellon wrote in 2008 as the Edwards campaign was collapsing. The check was not cashed until after the campaign had ended.

Earlier in the day, the jury sent a note to the court saying, “We have finished our deliberations and have arrived at our decision on counts one through six.”

But pressed in the courtroom by the judge, Catherine C. Eagles, the foreman said the jurors had reached a unanimous verdict on one count only. The verdict was not announced at that time.

The court, which had braced for what appeared to be a full verdict, appeared unprepared for the jury’s partial decision during the ninth day of deliberations.

Judge Eagles then sent the jurors out of the courtroom and asked each side how to proceed.

The prosecution recommended that the judge send the jury back to deliberate further. “The government’s view is it appears they are not finished,” said David Harbach II, the lead prosecutor.

Abbe Lowell, the head of Mr. Edwards’s legal team, noted that the jury had already taken twice as much time as the defense used to present its case and that deliberations had taken almost as long as the prosecution took. Mr. Lowell recommended that she accept the verdict on the third count and declare a mistrial on the rest.

Shortly after 3 p.m., the judge said she had decided to ask the jury to return to its deliberations for the afternoon.

Speaking before the jurors returned for her instructions, she said, “I want to make it clear to them they are not prisoners in there.”

Once the jurors had returned to the courtroom, she delivered what is known as an Allen charge, which essentially tells a jury that no other panel is likely to be as competent as this one in reaching a full verdict.

She said she knew that they had deliberated diligently, adding, “I do not intend to force any of you to abandon your deeply held views.”

About an hour later, the jurors returned and the one not-guilty verdict was announced. After considering how to proceed, the judge declared a mistrial on the other five charges.

The Avengers is still reaping boy-band cash in theaters. But the all-seeing eye of the Internet has already shifted forward to 2013, when Marvel will release the Iron Man threequel and the Thor sequel. Earlier this month, Iron Man 3 officially signed James Badge Dale — better known as “the quietly heroic guy from The Pacific,” “the quietly paranoid guy fromRubicon,” and “the dude who got his hand chopped off on24.” Official word was that Dale was playing Eric Savin, a soldier in the comic books who was fatally injured in combat, only to be resurrected by the magic of ’80s science into the cyborg anti-hero known as Coldblood. However, new photos taken from the set of Iron Man 3 indicate that this version of Savin will incorporate elements of another character.

You can see other photos here. Dale is modeling an Iron Man armor painted to resemble Captain America’s Stars-and-Stripes outfit. This version of the costume first appeared in the comic-verse a few months ago, when Norman Osborn — former Green Goblin, current politician — created his own team of Avengers, He cast himself as “The Iron Patriot,” the All-American robo-superhero, using a stolen suit of Stark armor.

Now, there’s no way Norman Osborn will appear in Iron Man 3. (As Nathan Adams points out over at Film School Rejects, the movie rights to Osborn’s character belong to Sony and itsSpider-Man franchise.) But it’s easy to imagine how the Coldblood character will merge with the Iron Patriot. Just spitballing here, but I’m guessing that Dale’s character will follow Coldblood’s origin. He’s a good soldier who’s wounded in combat. But instead of being saved by magic cyborg science, he’ll be fixed up with a life-pumping Iron Man armor.

Following this theory, it would be a new version of Iron Man’s own origin story. Eric Savin is a Dark Mirror Sequel Villain, like Venom in Spider-Man 3 or Nuclear Man in Superman IV. (Dear god, I hope you can think of some better examples.) This notion of Savin fits with the Iron Manfilms’ intriguing fixation on the military-industrial complex — recall how Iron Man 2 offered a stealth debate about the ethics of nuclear deterrents and privatized defense spending. And also Russian Mickey Rourke, for some reason.

Bob Hartley, seen in 2006, will be coaching his third NHL team in Calgary.

May 31, 2012           12:20 PM ET

The Calgary Flames have announced that former Stanley Cup winner Bob Hartley will be their new head coach.

Hartley, 51, succeeds Brent Sutter behind the bench.

The club has called a press conference for 12:30 p.m. MT.

“Bob has won at every level he has coached, from the QMJHL to the AHL to the NHL to Switzerland, and we are confident he is going to continue his winning ways in Calgary,” Flames general manager Jay Feaster said in a statement.

“He is a tireless worker, an outstanding motivator, a great bench boss and game strategist; and a teacher at heart.”

Colorado won the Stanley Cup in 2001 and reached the Western Conference final on three other occasions under Hartley before he was fired after a disappointing start to the 2002-03 season.

Later that season, he began a tenure as Atlanta’s head coach that lasted until early in 2007-08. Hartley led the franchise to what is still its only playoff berth.

Prior to his NHL experience, Hartley held coaching jobs in the AHL and Quebec juniors.

Hartley, who has been coaching ZSC Lions in Switzerland, was also rumoured to be a candidate for Montreal’s coaching vacancy.

Calgary has not made the postseason since 2008, and last won a playoff round four years earlier, the season they reached the Stanley Cup final.

A federal appeals court panel in Boston declared the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional on Thursday, but said that only the Supreme Court will be able to settle the question of whether the federal government must recognize same-sex marriages from states where such unions are legal.

A unanimous panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit said the act, which was signed by President Clinton and denies federal economic and other benefits for married people from same-sex couples married in states where it is legal, could not be justified under current precedents that protect minorities and other groups from discrimination.

For 150 years, Circuit Judge Michael Boudin wrote, the “desire to maintain tradition would alone have been justification enough for almost any statute . . . . But Supreme Court decisions in the last fifty years call for closer scrutiny of government action touching upon minority group interests and of federal action in areas of traditional state concern.”

The Obama administration had decided not to defend the act, known as DOMA, because it had concluded that the law was unconstitutional. It was a step along the way in Obama’s “evolution” on same-sex unions. In May, the president said publicly that he supported same-sex marriage but that the issue should be left up to the states.

The judicial panel noted that most Americans live in states that have either passed laws or amended their constitutions to express, as DOMA does, that marriage is legal only if it’s between a man and a woman.

“One virtue of federalism is that it permits this diversity of governance based on local choice, but this applies as well to the states that have chosen to legalize same-sex marriage,” Boudin wrote. “Under current Supreme Court authority, Congress’ denial of federal benefits to same-sex couples lawfully married in Massachusetts has not been adequately supported by any permissible federal interest.”

The opinion did not address whether other states may be forced to recognize same-sex marriages performed in states where they are legal. And the judges said the case did not call upon them to address whether there is a constitutional right to marriage that must be available to gay couples.

The case, Gill v. Office of Personnel Management, was brought by seven same-sex couples married in Massachusetts and three surviving spouses of such marriages who were denied federal benefits and recognition. The decision said there were about 100,000 couples who would be affected.

“We have done our best to discern the direction” of court precedents, the opinion said, “but only the Supreme Court can finally decide this unique case.”

PLAINTIFFS ELATED

Plaintiffs in the case are elated by today’s ruling by the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston.
Kathy Bush, one of the plaintiffs, says she’s thrilled because the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act forces her family to pay more taxes and leaves her ineligible for death benefits if her state trooper wife dies on duty.
Opponents argue that one state is trying to redefine marriage for the nation.
The U.S. Supreme Court will likely decide the case.
Kris Mineau, of the Massachusetts Family Institute, says he’s confident that court will see the “eternal logic” of defining marriage as between a man and a woman.

The family of a Georgia man who died when his heart couldn’t take a three-way sex romp was awarded a hefty $3 million payout by a jury, according to reports.

William Martinez’s estate was originally seeking $5 million in a medical malpractice case that claimed a cardiologist failed to warn the 31-year-old to stay away from physical activity. While Gwinnett County jurors sided with the family Tuesday, they agreed to a lesser amount after finding Martinez was 40% liable for his own death, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Wednesday.

Martinez, a husband and father of two, was engaged in a threesome with a friend and another woman who was not his wife, according to the newspaper. He died March 12, 2009.

The week before, Martinez reportedly went to the CardioVascular Group in Lawrenceville, Ga., complaining of chest pains that shot up his arm, said CBS affiliate WAOK in Atlanta.

A test was scheduled for eight days later, but the day before the test he decided to engage in the extramarital hanky panky, according to reports.

His attorneys argued that attending cardiologist Dr. Sreeni Gangasani neglected to tell Martinez to refrain from getting too physical — presumably including any sexual activity — before the test was performed.

Martinez’s legal team said he had high blood pressure and his heart was at risk of having clogged arteries, The Journal-Constitution reported.

Attorneys at Edmond & Lindsay in Atlanta couldn’t be reached for comment Wednesday, The Journal-Constitution said, and it was unclear whether Martinez’s wife or his two sons would be benefitting financially from the judgment.

The trial began last Monday in state civil court.

An attorney for Gangasani told The Journal-Constitution, “We’re definitely going to appeal the verdict and the judgment.”

Motorcyclist on Road speeding motorcycle bike WEB STOCK

Thursday May 31, 2012             1:11 PM

Authorities say a 28-year-old Hudson Valley man has been charged with driving his motorcycle at nearly 200 mph in the rain on the New York State Thruway.

State police say a trooper clocked Anthony Anderson of Poughkeepsie driving at 193 mph around 8 p.m. Wednesday in the southbound lanes of Interstate 87 just south of Albany. The trooper was able to get a description of the high-performance bike and alerted nearby Thruway patrols.

Troopers eventually stopped Anderson in the Ulster County town of Rosendale. Troopers say he told them he was headed to a Poughkeepsie-area hospital to visit a patient.

Anderson was issued 14 traffic tickets, including one for speeding.

He has been released from the county jail after posting $1,500 bail. It couldn’t be immediately determined if he had a lawyer.

The heir to the Dutch throne made a media splash by hurling a toilet for fun in a contest recently – but has now spoken of his shame.

Crown Prince Willem-Alexander said the event on Queen’s Day last month was “a laugh”, but he also felt “shame at the thought of some 2.6 billion people around the world” who lack toilets.

He won a cup with a little toilet on top as a prize.

The 30 April festivities were held in the eastern village of Rhenen.

The crown prince’s younger brother Prince Constantijn also hurled a toilet in the contest, but not as far.

The annual festival marks the birthday of Queen Beatrix’s late mother Queen Juliana.

The crown prince is also chairman of the UN’s water and sanitation advisory board (UNSGAB) and the Dutch government’s information service later insisted that he was not ashamed of his involvement in the contest.

He had taken part because the toilets were destined for a project in Gambia, it said.

The father of the man who opened fire and killed five people across Seattle and later killed himself after a citywide manhunt, says his son was a very private person who was “disgruntled” and had been a frequent customer of the coffee shop where his rampage began.

“He was happy sometimes, but not really. He was kind of disgruntled,” Walt Stawicki said about his son Ian Stawicki, who fatally shot himself after a killing spree Wednesday.

Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center confirmed that Ian Stawicki, who according to his father, was unmarried with no children and had recently worked on a fish processing boat in Alaska, died at 6 p.m. local time Wednesday.

After the shootings began at approximately 11 a.m. when Stawicki opened fire at Cafe Racer Espresso in Seattle’s University District, eventually killing four people, he killed a fifth random woman in a subsequent confrontation and stole her car.

Two victims died at the scene at Cafe Racer Espresso, while two more died later at Harborview Medical Center. People who were brought to the hospital had suffered gunshot wounds to the head, according to Susan Gregg, a hospital spokeswoman.

According to the Seattle Times, two of the victims at the cafe were Joe “Vito” Albanese, 52, who was killed along with best friend Drew Keriakedes, 45; the two men were in a band called God’s Favorite Beefcake. The two other victims shot at the cafe have not yet been identified.

The Seattle Times reports that the only survivor of today’s shootings is Leonard Meuse, who is currently out of surgery at Harborview Medical Center after he was shot in the jaw and the armpit. Meuse is expected to survive.

Although it’s not known what prompted the cafe shooting, Ian’s brother, Andrew Stawicki, said that his girlfriend said Ian was acting “kind of crazy” Wednesday morning, and she would not let him have the car.

Ian apparently had his mother’s pickup truck on Wednesday; the family currently does not know where the vehicle is.

The late Wednesday morning shooting set off a massive manhunt throughout Seattle. Earlier in the day, Seattle police had tweeted that the suspect “is still alive and receiving treatment at Harborview Medical Center.”

The second shooting incident occurred in downtown Seattle, about a 15-minute drive from the cafe.

“It appears that about 30 minutes after the shooting at the cafe, the suspect in the cafe shooting fled to First Hill, where he fatally shot a woman in a parking lot, and stole her SUV,” police wrote in a blog post on the shootings.

Ian Stawicki did not know married mother of two Gloria Leonidas, the woman he killed in the second shooting incident, according to his father. Koch reportedly died at Harborview Medical Center.

The area where the suspect shot himself was about seven miles southwest of downtown Seattle — about a mile to a mile and a half from where the suspect’s stolen black SUV was found abandoned with a gun on the seat, according to police.

During a search of the area, a detective spotted the suspect on the street and started watching him, police said. When backup officers arrived and started moving toward the man, he turned to the officers and the officers ordered him to drop his weapon.

Instead, the suspect put a firearm to his head and pulled the trigger, firing one shot, and immediately dropped to the ground.

Two waitresses will get their day in court against a New York City restaurant they’ve sued for sexual harassment and sexual discrimination, battery and a hostile work environment.

Kristen McRedmond and Alexandria Lipton were given the green light last week by the Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court, which affirmed that the case should go to trial.

Both women waited tables and tended bar at Sutton Place Restaurant and Bar from August 2004 until they were both terminated in July 2006.

McRedmond, now a teacher, said that a nighttime shift manager, Neil Hanafy, made vulgar sexual comments and touched her inappropriately while she worked at the restaurant. Hanafy repeatedly asked her how much she weighed, she claims, and at one point picked her up to put her on a scale to settle a poll among male co-workers about her weight, according to her attorney, Rosemarie Arnold.

“This is an egregious case where disgusting men felt they could treat women in a demeaning manner, and it’s clear that every judge on the [New York] Supreme Court … and now the appellate decision affirms that’s not behavior that’s tolerated in the workplace,” said Arnold.

In addition to sexual harassment, sexual discrimination, battery and a hostile work environment, the two women are also alleging retaliatory termination and unlawful imprisonment, and are demanding $15 million in compensatory and punitive damages, according to the complaint.

McRedmond claimed “she was unlawfully imprisoned by Sutton Place when she was held in the manger’s office after Hanafy attempted to weigh her,” according to the court filing.

She said that when she refused to get on a scale, “Hanafy attempted to pick her up and put her on the scale. Allegedly, after McRedmond broke free from his grasp, she was told that she could not leave the office until she got weighed. McRedmond did leave the office within 10 minutes, although she claims to have been hysterically crying and disoriented.”

Hanafy has denied wrongdoing, and the restaurant claims McRedmond and Lipton were fired for legitimate reasons.

Lipton, now an attorney, claimed that Hanafy asked her what she weighed in front of other waitresses and wrote in a note pad what he believed her weight was, which he denied doing. She also claimed he instructed Lipton and other waitresses on how to lose weight and had some of them weighed.

Lipton also claimed that Hanafy touched her weekly against her will by giving her massages and “pulling her close to him while she tried to escape his grasp,” according to court documents.

Hanafy denied any inappropriate touching or comments. The restaurant denied that his alleged touching was inappropriate, “since he never propositioned Lipton for sex or grabbed her buttocks or chest,” according to a court filing in New York Supreme Court that dismissed some of the plaintiffs’ claims, including some specifically against the restaurant’s owner and general manager.

Joshua Mallin, attorney for the restaurant, said the former waitresses’ claims have been “vigorously denied by my clients.”

“Ultimately what this appellate court decided was there were too many issues of fact,” he said. “A jury will have to decide whether any of their claims are valid or whether, as the defendants contend, they completely have no basis in fact.”

Lipton also said Hanafy told her she was not allowed to eat during her shift, which was sometimes 10 hours.

Lipton also said Hanafy asked her and another waitress to comment about certain sexual content in pornographic movies, according to a court filing. She also said he would “routinely” make comments about the bar’s female customers by saying things like “She’s a stupid [expletive], she’s ugly, she’s fat, she’s disgusting, get her the [expletive] out of here,” according to court records.

The restaurant disputes “the alleged comments made by Hanafy and claimed that any statements made constituted appropriate reprimands concerning McRedmond’s habitual violations of Sutton Place’s employment policies, and were merely to inform her of these infractions,” according to a court filing.

The restaurant claims McRedmond’s alleged violations included sending text messages, being on her phone during her shift and eating without permission during her shift.

May 30, 2012         11:50 PM ET

More than 130 people who bought tickets to next week’s Formula One race in Montreal have had their personal information posted online, seemingly by the hacker collective Anonymous.

The names, email addresses and phone numbers of 131 ticket buyers were posted, along with the class of tickets purchased, the price paid and the date they were bought. Credit card information was not posted.

CBC News contacted several people on the list who confirmed all the information posted about them was correct.

Anonymous had threatened to go after the Montreal F1 race as part of its campaign against the Quebec government over Bill 78, the emergency legislation it passed on May 18 to crack down on nearly 3½ months of student protests.

A web posting accompanying the F1 data leak says, in French, “Anonymous is teaching you to respect sport. Sport’s greatest wealth isn’t money but freedom. Today, Anonymous reminds us of the importance of sportsmanship, which you have debased by your corrupt and authoritarian society.”

The message goes on to say that “the Formula One Grand Prix in Quebec will be embarrassing. Anonymous supports sporting events around the world, but they must uphold the sporting spirit, and thus uphold people’s equality and liberty.”

‘Very upsetting’

One of the people whose information was posted, Andres Hurtado of Calgary, confirmed that he spent close to $500 on tickets for the Montreal F1 race weekend, which takes place June 8-10.

“It’s very upsetting that they want to disrupt something like this, kind of an international event, to show whatever their purpose is,” Hurtado said. “I agree that they can freely protest, but when it comes down to something like this — I don’t even live in Montreal and I’m getting attacked by this!”

Frank Thoeringer of MacTier, Ont., was upset to learn his private information had been posted online, but he was even more upset at an email signed by the Autonomous Committee for the Eternal Strike urging him not to attend the race.

The “Notice to Grand Prix Visitors” was sent to Thoeringer about 2:30 a.m. Thursday and suggests those who were planning a trip to Montreal to watch the race should reconsider it. The email describes the city as an “epicentre of escalating social war” sparked by the student strike.

“Do not fool yourself into thinking that you can avoid or contain us, or that the police will protect you from our makeshift weapons. There is nowhere to hide. We know every street, every alley, every park. We know where you will sleep, where you will shop and where you will drink. We have been planning to crash your party for some time now,” the email reads.

Thoeringer said while the email is pretty scary, he and family members still plan to attend the F1 race.

“I am coming to Montreal … I enjoy Formula One,” the 24-year-old told CBC News.

Mikyo Butler, a technology analyst from Boston, said he didn’t know much about Anonymous but gave the group the benefit of the doubt that it had “good intentions” behind its actions.

“It’s certainly something that can raise awareness, on the one hand. On the other hand, I don’t feel great about having my info compromised,” he said.

Hurtado and Butler bought their tickets in March, but in recent weeks, ticket sales have slowed due to the unrest in Quebec from the student crisis, Montreal Grand Prix organizers said Wednesday.

“For several weeks, ticket sales have been very low, nothing like what we normally see,” race boss François Dumontier told CBC’s French-language service.

Anonymous’s previous offensives against the Quebec government temporarily downed several ministries’ websites and are thought to have shut down the Quebec Liberal Party’s site as well.

Earlier this week, the hacker collective posted online a two-hour-long private video of Quebec Premier Jean Charest and other dignitaries, including former prime ministers Jean Chrétien and Brian Mulroney and former U.S. president George H.W. Bush, hobnobbing with corporate and political elites at an opulent birthday party for Jacqueline Desmarais, wife of Power Corp. ex-CEO Paul Desmarais.

The video, filmed at the Desmarais family’s estate in Quebec’s Charlevoix region, captures a sumptuous, multimillion-dollar white-tie affair involving performances by a symphony orchestra, singing from Quebec rocker Robert Charlebois and tenor Marc Hervieux, and dozens of cabaret performers, kitchen staff and valets.

Yani Tseng brings her star power, No. 1 ranking, and three 2012 tour wins to New Jersey this week for the ShopRite LPGA Classic.

Tseng, who cadged spots among Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people last month and was rated the 10th most marketable athlete in the world two weeks ago by SportsProMedia, is one of 21 of the top 25 players in women’s golf to tee it up starting Friday in Galloway, N.J. She’ll try to keep 12th-ranked Brittany Lincicome from defending her title on the Bay Course at Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club.

Lincicome, who won last year’s event by one stroke, went on to capture the Canadian Women’s Open and post five more top-10 finishes in 2011. The seventh-year pro is still looking for her first triumph of this season, as are No. 3 Suzann Pettersen, fifth-ranked Cristie Kerr, and No. 13 Paula Creamer.

Meanwhile, No. 7 Stacy Lewis has her sights set on becoming the highest-ranked American on tour. With six top-10s and one missed cut so far in 2012, Lewis leads the U.S. contingent in Player of the Year points but is third behind Tseng and reigning Kraft Nabisco champion Sun Young Yoo.

Change was the name of the game for Kerr, who made yet another caddie switch. For the second consecutive tourney, Kerr replaced her looper, this time swapping Jason Gilroyd, who had been on her bag for the last two years, for old friend Worth Blackwelder. Blackwelder caddied for Kerr at the beginning of her career and helped her to five tour victories.

“I had been struggling with some caddie issues,” Kerr told reporters Wednesday. “I let my caddie of a few years go after Mobile and then had a temporary guy at [the Sybase Match Play Championship two weeks ago, where Kerr was eliminated in the third round] and I was pretty uncomfortable on the golf course. Not his fault, just kind of a bad situation.”

Kerr said it was difficult to find an on-course partner with the right blend of personality and know-how.

“I like to be part of the team,” she said. “Yes, I like to drive the ship but I like to have a teammate out there.”

Kerr hoped that Blackwelder would add some stability to her game. “He’s really easy-going and he keeps me peaceful and he’s really supportive,” she said. “He’s just a good caddie so I’m comfortable and feel like I’m going to be ready to go for the rest of the year now.”

Working with someone who knew her game was important to the 14-time tour winner. “I’m glad I’m going to have some kind of continuity and somebody that’s familiar and someone that’s a good caddie and positive,” Kerr said. “He’s exactly what I need right now and hopefully it will work out for the long term.”

Kerr, whose father is a Vietnam veteran, spent Memorial Day honoring members of the military by hosting 50 servicewomen and men at Liberty National Golf Course in New York. The event raised $15,000 for the Wall Street War Fighter Foundation, which helps wounded military personnel train for jobs in finance.

Other notables in this week’s field include:

  • Lexi Thompson, who began her professional career at this tournament in 2010 at the age of 15 (she missed the cut by four strokes)
  • Natalie Gulbis, who’s had two top-10s in seven starts so far this year
  • Michelle Wie, who’ll be coming off three consecutive missed cuts to go with a T38 and a 59th-place finish

Rising star: Cheyenne Woods is making a name for herself in the golfing world

May 31, 2012

Tiger Woods’ niece, Cheyenne Woods, will make her first start as a professional golfer at next week’s Wegmans LPGA Championship in Pittsford, N.Y.

Playing on a sponsor’s exemption, the 21-year-old daughter of Tiger’s half-brother, Earl Woods Jr., will try to better her performance in the first event she played on tour (the second major of the season) — a missed cut as an amateur in 2009. The younger Woods, a standout at Wake Forest University, announced last week that she was making the transition from college to the professional ranks.

Wednesday May 30, 2012             10:17PM EDT

Luka Rocco Magnotta’s Internet trail is long, but it’s hard to know what’s real. Even his name isn’t the one he was born with: He was Eric Clinton Kirk Newman until he legally changed his identity on Aug. 12, 2006.

The slender 29-year-old Canadian has gone by other names, too, such as Vladimir Romanov and Mattia Del Santo, in his life on the Web, as a model and as a bisexual adult-film performer.Human foot delivered to Tory headquarters

On the Internet, he billed himself as a star, as someone who was famous enough to date celebrities and even serial killers, such as Karla Homolka.

Most recently – until he was named on Wednesday as the prime suspect in a gruesome murder in Montreal – he was best known as the alleged “Vacuum Kitten Killer,” dubbed so by a Facebook group started in December, 2010, to track down the man responsible for posting a kittens-killing video on YouTube.

“We spent 18 months warning the police … and what did they do?” group member Rob Lynn, who lives in England, wrote online shortly after Montreal police revealed Mr. Magnotta was wanted in connection with the slaying of a man, whose body was severed and a part of it, a foot, mailed to Conservative Party headquarters. A hand, meanwhile, was destined for Liberal Party offices.

Family members in Ontario declined to comment Wednesday on the allegations against Mr. Magnotta. An aunt would only say, “I’m ashamed that he’s related.”

Property records indicate a relative lives in a brick, two-storey house in Peterborough, Ont. People inside the home Wednesday evening called police after reporters knocked on the door persistently.

“She’s intimidated, afraid, it’s all news to her today, too – all these things unfolding,” said Peterborough police office Dan MacLean, who arrived on the scene to ask reporters to stay off the property.

He said his police force is playing a peripheral role in the wider investigation, only checking out a couple of addresses in the area northeast of Toronto.

Mr. Magnotta grew up in Toronto, but appears to have lived in Los Angeles at some point, according to a Facebook page set up in his name. His Internet fame seems to be self-created.

“Luka Magntta [sic] is a Canadian male model who has become world famous through his photographs and television appearances,” states a posting on the page, which includes a list of his interests: travel, restaurants, culture and “surrounding myself with good people.”

A Toronto Sun reporter interviewed Mr. Magnotta in September, 2007, in Toronto. A rumour that he’d dated school-girl killer Karla Homolka had been circulating online.

“I want to set the record straight,” Mr. Magnotta said in the interview, appearing groggy and shaking as he spoke. “I not only have never dated Karla, I have never even met her.”

He insisted it was a smear campaign against him, but the animal-rights Facebook group formed to catch the “Vacuum Kitten Killer” claims this and other falsehoods were started and spread by Mr. Magnotta.

“He posts across the Internet, in iNews, blogs and forums in an effort to increase his fame,” the Facebook group wrote in a report detailing its sleuthing into Mr. Magnotta’s Web presence. “He tries to link himself to celebrities by commenting on articles featuring them, saying, ‘She is dating Luka Magnotta, just so you know.’ ”

His favourite celebrities included Madonna, Marilyn Monroe, Michael Jackson and James Dean, his idol. Mr. Magnotta has claimed to have undergone cosmetic surgery to look more like the iconic American 1950s film actor.

Of late, Mr. Magnotta seemed to be fixated on the Russian mafia. Images of the Russian mob and videos of people being killed in Russia were posted on his many Facebook accounts, according to the animal-rights group.

In a short biography accompanying his shirtless picture in the Toronto-based gay lifestyle magazine fab, Mr. Magnotta (who went by the name Jimmy) said he was born in Russia and hoped to become a police officer one day.

“I don’t want to do traffic tickets,” the write-up stated. “I am thinking vice or homicide.”

Over the years, Mr. Magnotta has claimed to live in numerous cities: Los Angeles, Miami, San Diego and Moscow. In a June, 2009, blog posted under the name Rocco Magnotta and titled, “How to completely disappear and never be found,” he apparently wrote that he was tired of “the constant harassment” and was leaving the country for good.

In an interview with Mr. Magnotta published on NowPublic in August, 2010, the man said he began in the adult-film industry when he was 20 years old, performing in webcam shows in Los Angeles. He said he had appeared in more than a dozen movies and many magazines under different stage names.

He noted that he knew his modelling and adult-film days were nearing an end, and said he was thinking of pursuing criminal law or psychology afterwards.

“You have to realize that after age 30, your career is basically over,” he reportedly said. “Time is the biggest enemy.”

It’s one of the 25 most-trafficked websites in the U.S., and it was founded by a pair of siblings in New Hope, Pennsylvania. Catherine and Geoff Cook explain how they did it.

It’s hard not to wonder just what the Cook parents fed their kids, Geoff, Dave, and Catherine. Geoff founded a business while attending Harvard—and sold it in 2002 at the ripe age of 24. That inspired Catherine and Dave to launch myYearbook, a social networking site for high school kids, in 2005. When the site, based in New Hope, Pennsylvania, took off, Geoff stepped in as CEO. (Dave spent the past four years at college in Colorado but recently returned.) Last year, myYearbook merged with Quepasa, a publicly traded company that runs social networking sites aimed at Latinos, in a $100 million deal. The Cooks still run the show and are focused on graduating to a global market. As told to Liz Welch.

CATHERINE: When I was 14, my family moved to Skillman, New Jersey, where I started high school. I didn’t know anyone. My brother Dave and I were flipping through the school’s yearbook to see if we recognized anyone, and we were shocked at how useless the information was. That’s when we thought, What if we put the whole thing online? I’d always looked up to my brother Geoff. He’s 11 years older than me and had already launched a successful start-up. I thought if he started a company, I could, too.

GEOFF: I was a sophomore at Harvard and was editing admissions essays and resumés. In 1997, I put up two websites—EssayEdge.com and ResumeEdge.com. By the end of my senior year, I was hiring students to do the work and making hundreds of thousands of dollars. I wound up finding an investor, and then sold the sites to the Thomson Corporation in 2002. I stayed with Thomson—which had offices in New Jersey, not far from where my family lived. I was looking for my Next Big Thing when Catherine bounced this idea off of me. I invested $250,000 and left Thomson and became myYearbook’s CEO.

CATHERINE: I was like, Wow! He really likes it! We found developers in Mumbai through a Google search. Dave and I would get home from school at 4 and then be up chatting online until 4 a.m. because of the time difference. A month later, in April 2005, we launched a bare-bones site in our town. We wore T-shirts with sayings like, “Are you the prettiest girl in high school? How about the dumbest? Find out.” In one week, 400 people signed up. I knew we were going to be successful when a friend told me it was one of the greatest procrastination tools ever built.

GEOFF: We immediately started thinking of ways to engage users with games and quizzes that appeal to teenagers. Catherine was responsible for some of our most important features, because she was communicating directly with users and learning instantly what they wanted.

CATHERINE: I have always been, and still am, one of the most active members on the site. Every new member gets a friend request from me, which is why I now have more than a million friends.

GEOFF: By mid-2006, we had one million users, mostly due to viral growth, but we weren’t making any money at all. I reached out to one of the investors in my previous company, and he made a sizable investment, which allowed us to put together a team of about a dozen people—mostly engineers—and get our first office. Before that, we were working out of my home and my parents’ place. But then we realized that we needed more engineers to scale the site, so we started looking for a second round of financing. Our selling pitch was that we were MySpace for high school. We got $4.1 million in 2007.

CATHERINE: Dave and I became known as the “myYearbook kids” at school. Our plan worked-we had tons of friends. But my grades suffered. By my senior year, I was skipping classes all the time to go to work. One of my teachers actually pulled me aside, because my grade had dropped to a 78 percent-and I had always been an A student. I missed one class so often I almost lost credit, but my school cut me slack.

GEOFF: Before we launched the company, Catherine cared about if she got an A-minus instead of an A-plus. Her striving for perfection transferred to the company. She became our spokesperson, and she’s a natural. When she was 17, we were invited to speak at a technology conference with all these very high-powered people, including Mark Zuckerberg. We had to pitch our business to Barry Diller for a segment called “What Would Barry Buy?” Catherine and I followed MC Hammer, who presented his company, DanceJam. Barry picked myYearbook.

CATHERINE: We weren’t making any money, so after I graduated, I went to Georgetown as a fallback. Dave wanted to focus on college, so he took time off from the company while he was at the University of Colorado. I came home every two weeks and clustered all my classes to two days and spent the other three telecommuting. As a result, I had no social life. There was no time for parties or extracurricular stuff. I felt bad about missing things. But how many kids could say, I’m missing my first midterm to talk about user-generated content at a conference in South Korea?

GEOFF: By the time Catherine was at college, it became clear that Facebook intended to rule the world, which forced us to hone our message: Facebook was about the friends you already have; myYearbook was about making new friends. On Facebook, people never accept friend requests from someone they don’t know, but that is 99 percent of all friend requests on myYearbook. So we focused all our apps and features on becoming the social graph of people you want to know.

CATHERINE: I met my best friend on the site when I was in high school. Recently, a member messaged me to say his wife, whom he met on myYearbook, was pregnant with their first child. How cool is that?

GEOFF: In 2010, we had $23 million in revenue, but 85 percent of our users were in North America. Winners tend to be global brands, so we started looking for ways that myYearbook could span the world. We looked at raising private equity to go buy other companies, but we didn’t see anything we were interested in. And then, in 2011, we were approached by Quepasa. We thought, If you put these things together and push, a year from now we’ll have a meaningful Brazilian and Mexican audience.

CATHERINE: The merger made me even more excited to graduate. I kept it a big secret. I didn’t even tell my boyfriend or best friend.

GEOFF: It was a $100 million deal—$18 million in cash, the rest in stock. I am now Quepasa’s COO. Since yearbooks don’t matter much outside of the U.S., we just announced a new name: MeetMe. And with that, we plan to make our social discovery platform span the world.

CATHERINE: My new title is vice president of brand strategy, so I’m focused on going global with the mission I started this company with: to meet new people. It’s pretty awesome. I’m more popular than I ever imagined.

At a time whenbreastfeeding in public is already controversial, pictures of two military moms doing so while wearing their uniforms is sparking outrage.

The photo is part of a local breastfeeding awareness campaign byMom2Mom of Fairchild Air Force Base, a support group launched in January by Crystal Scott, a military spouse and mother of three. Among the intimate close-ups of smiling young mothers cuddling their adorable babies, the images of the two airmen stand out.

Related: Moms react to the “Time” magazine’s “Are You Mom enough?” breastfeeding cover

“People are comparing breastfeeding in uniform to urinating and defecating in uniform. They’re comparing it to the woman who posed in “Playboy” in uniform [in 2007]” Scott told Yahoo! Shine in an interview. “We never expected it to be like this.”

“I’m an X-ray tech and I breastfeed in my uniform all the time,” Scott says. “Granted they’re scrubs. But people do it all the time in their uniforms. If you have a hungry baby, why would you take the time to change completely?”

Related: Army mom home from Afghanistan surprises her son

Terran Echegoyen-McCabe, a member of the Air National Guard who was photographed in uniform nursing her 10-month-old twin daughters, says that she’s surprised by the reaction to the photos.

“I have breastfed in our lobby, in my car, in the park … and I pump, usually in the locker room,” she told the “Today” show, adding that she usually nurses her babies while on her lunch break during drill weekends. “I’m proud to be wearing a uniform while breast-feeding. I’m proud of the photo and I hope it encourages other women to know they can breastfeed whether they’re active duty, guard or civilian.”

All of the women in the photos volunteered to appear in the awareness campaign, and Echegoyen-McCabe is featured — wearing civilian clothing — in a few of the other candid shots. None of the photos are posed; the women are simply feeding their babies the way they usually do. But even though some of the other photographs are just as revealing, only the ones of Echegoyen-McCabe and her friend Christina Luna in uniform have been criticized.

“The Air Force has never endorsed these photos,” the photographer, Brynja Sigurdardottir points out on her website, where she posted several other photos from the Mom2Mom campaign. “These women just happen to be in the Air Force, in their uniform, breastfeeding their babies.”

When it comes to talking about breastfeeding in public, comparing it to other bodily functions — and even sex — is common, in spite of the fact that breastfeeding is legal and protected while defecating or having sex in public is not. But the fact that two of the moms are shown breastfeeding in public while wearing military uniforms makes the entire controversy more complicated. The Army, for example, didn’t even come up with a combat uniform for women until 2010, so accepting the idea of a uniformed soldier breastfeeding a baby may be especially jarring. And the uniforms themselves come with their own sets of rules.

According to Military Spouse Central, public displays of affection — even something as innocuous as holding hands — are not allowed while wearing a military uniform. Also forbidden while in uniform: eating, drinking, or talking on a cell phone while walking, carrying an umbrella that’s not black, and (in some cases) smoking or even chewing gum. While there is no policy that addresses breastfeeding in uniform, Air Force spokesperson Captain Rose Richeson told MSNBC: “Airmen should be mindful of their dress and appearance and present a professional image at all times while in uniform.” Military moms who are still breastfeeding are encouraged to pump and bottle-feed their babies while they’re in uniform.

Scott suggests that the issue might have less to do with the uniform and more to do with our own internal conflicts. “I think a lot of people think that you can’t be a mom and be a soldier,” she says. “This is not something that’s out of norm for them. They breastfeed in uniform all the time — it’s just not something that’s usually captured on film.”

ERNIE BROWN, JR.:  The Turtleman

Ernie Brown, Jr. (aka the Turtleman) has been diving into murky Kentucky ponds in search of snapping turtles for nearly 40 years. Born and raised in Washington County, Kentucky, he spent his childhood exploring the woods and learning the ways of the animals that occupy them. Turtleman caught his first snapping turtle, a 25-pounder, when he was just seven-years-old, after his father and uncle taught him the risky technique.

Since then, the legend of Turtleman has spread throughout the Blue Grass state and has afforded Ernie a career as an animal rescuer. At the age of 17, he caught his biggest turtle to date, aptly named the “Loch Ness Turtle,” a monster snapper weighing close to 55 pounds.

Ernie catches an average of 300 turtles a year and has been injured 33 times. To date, he reckons he’s caught over 12,000 turtles.

Prior to devoting all of his time to rescuing and relocating wildlife, Ernie worked an array of hard labor jobs, including cutting boards for whiskey and wine barrels, milking cows and working in construction for nine years. He currently lives off the land deep in the backwoods of Kentucky with his loyal canine companion Lolly.

Pastor who died handling rattlesnake in West Virginia crossed the line one too many times

I’m trying to imagine my reaction when my husband comes through the door and asks, “Honey, could I use the spare bedroom for the poisonous snakes?”

That’s apparently what Mack Wolford did. And after more than a decade of using snakes as part of religious ceremonies, the 44-year-old West Virginia Pentecostal pastor died from a rattlesnake bite this week after being bitten in the thigh.

“Just eight or so,” my husband would say. “Rattlesnakes, copperheads and water moccasins.

“And don’t worry. We’ll just feed them mice and rats.”

“Of course darling. Whatever.”

In running a religion Web site one has to be pluralistic. On Faith features people from all faiths and no faith. I hardly count anybody out and I am rare to judge.  Life is hard. There are many things that get people through the night, many things that give us meaning. So long as nobody gets hurt, then believe or don’t believe what you want.  I don’t understand bigotry or discrimination. There is no existing religion that doesn’t sound crazy to somebody.

However, I draw the line at snake handling.

Snake handling is illegal in most states but it is legal in West Virginia, where Wolford practiced.  Believe it or not, snake handling is just a little over a hundred years old, though the reasoning cited for the practice is as old as the New Testament of the Bible.

Mark 16:18: They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

Luke 10:19: Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

According to a 2011 Washington Post Magazine profile of Wolford, he was 15 when he watched his father die at age 39 from a rattlesnake bite. Not only did that image not discourage him from snake handling, it eventually urged him on.  “I promised the Lord,” he told The Post, ”I’d do everything in my power to keep the faith going. I spend a lot of time going a lot of places that handle serpents to keep them motivated. I’m trying to get anybody I can get involved.”

That’s got to be a hard sell: “Come join our church and risk dying an excruciatingly painful death (venom attacks the nervous system), or watch your friends and family suffer the same fate.” There are understandably not too many converts to snake handling. It is passed down from family to family (though children are not allowed to handle snakes). Yet we watch — in horrified fascination.

I was stunned to read that Wolford passed a yellow timber rattlesnake to a church member and the man’s mother (hismother!) during Wolford’s last ceremony.   Wolford’s sister told The Post, “He laid it on the ground and he sat down next to the snake and it bit him on the thigh.” He was taken to a medical center where he died about 9.5 hours later.

Certainly, not everyone who handles snakes gets bitten. When they do, most survive. Snake handlers are known to have scars, bitten fingers and even atrophied hands from bites.

But if the Gospel promises, “nothing by any means shall hurt you,” were Wolford, his father and others who have died handling snakes being tricked? Were the words not supposed to be taken literally? Is a person who dies evil, or a sinner, and therefore being punished?

I don’t think it matters.

Americans who criticize other religions, especially those abroad where followers are oppressed or punished barbarically for errant behavior, should look carefully at religious practices in this country where people are harmed.

Snake handling is a barbaric and dangerous practice, which should be outlawed.  You can’t stop people from committing suicide but you can stop it from being ritualized, legally sanctioned and where it puts others in harms way.  There’s not much difference between snake handling and drinking Kool-Aid with Jim Jones. People die.

It’s hard to define what religion really is.  But I know it when I see it. Snake handling ain’t it.

A Halifax man who survived the fatal shooting on Clifton Street last week says the incident had nothing to do with drugs.

William Hawes-Boliver was in his apartment Friday when his close friend, Corey Duane Lucas, was shot to death.

Hawes-Boliver said the ordeal began when two men stormed in to his home. He said one of the intruders shot him in the leg with a silver .25-calibre automatic handgun before turning the weapon on Lucas.

“I grabbed the man’s hand and Corey jumped up and started firing fists and hitting him directly in the face, and buddy is backing up and popping off shots and trying to cover himself,” he told CBC News on Wednesday.

Hawes-Boliver said the gunman ran out of bullets and fled with the other intruder.

Lucas, 36, collapsed behind the couch, told him that he loved him and died.

Hawes-Boliver was taken to hospital for treatment for his injuries. He said the bullet went through his leg above the knee and didn’t cause any serious damage.

Halifax Regional Police said the shooting was related to drugs and was not random.

But Hawes-Boliver said his apartment is not a crack house.

“It wasn’t a drug deal. It wasn’t nothing to do with that at all,” he said.

Three people face drug-related charges as a result of the investigation into the homicide.

A 21-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman face charges of drug possession and drug possession for the purpose of trafficking. A third person — a 20-year-old man — faces a charge of drug possession for the purpose of trafficking.

No one has been charged in connection with Lucas’s death.

Nova Scotia Premier Darrell Dexter shuffled his cabinet on Wednesday, appointing Maureen MacDonald as the province’s first female Finance Minister.

MacDonald takes over for Graham Steele, who announced earlier on Wednesday that he will not seek re-election after an 11-year career in politics.

Bill Estabrooks also announced that he will not be running again, and his former job as Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister will be filled by NDP backbencher Maurice Smith, the MLA for Antigonish.

Dave Wilson — the MLA for Sackville-Cobequid — will become the Minister of Health and Wellness, and Leonard Preyra — the MLA for Halifax Citadel-Sable Island — enters cabinet for the first time in Wilson’s former job as Minister of Communities, Culture and Heritage.

Here’s what Nova Scotia’s cabinet looks like now:

  • Darrell Dexter — Premier.
  • Sterling Belliveau — Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Minister of Environment.
  • Frank Corbett — Deputy premier.
  • Ramona Jennex — Minister of Education.
  • Ross Landry — Attorney General and Minister of Justice.
  • Maureen MacDonald — Minister of Finance, Minister of Gaelic Affairs.
  • John MacDonell — Minister of Agriculture, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations.
  • Marilyn More — Minister of Labour and Advanced Education, Minister of Immigration.
  • Percy Paris — Minister of Economic and Rural Development and Tourism, Minister of African Nova Scotian Affairs.
  • Charlie Parker — Minister of Natural Resources, Minister of Energy.
  • Denise Peterson-Rafuse — Minister of Community Services, Minister of Seniors.
  • Leonard Preyra — Minister of Communities, Culture and Heritage.
  • Maurice Smith — Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal.
  • David Wilson — Minister of Health and Wellness.

The last time Dexter made any significant changes to his cabinet was in January 2011.

Experienced cabinet members not reoffering

Steele and Estabrooks — who both announced Wednesday they will not be reoffering — were two of the province’s most experienced cabinet ministers.

Graham Steele says he will continue to stay on as MLA for Halifax-Fairview until the next provincial election.

Steele was first elected to the provincial legislature in a 2001 byelection in the riding of Halifax-Fairview. He was sworn in as finance minister when Nova Scotia elected its first NDP government in June 2009.

Before entering public life, Steele was a practising lawyer.

“At this point in my life and my career, it’s time to move on and do something else. When the next election rolls around I will have been in politics as a staffer or an elected person for 15 years and for me personally, that’s enough. I just feel it’s time to move on,” he told reporters after the cabinet shuffle.

“I feel the need in the time between now and the next election to reconnect with my family and my health and my constituency.”

Steele stressed that although he is no longer a cabinet member, he will remain the MLA for Halifax Fairview until the next election.

“It’s the same team, just configured differently. I’m very proud to be followed by somebody of the calibre of Maureen MacDonald,” he said.

“I am confident that the budget that’s presented next spring will be balanced. This has never been a personal financial plan of my own. This has been the government’s plan, of which I am the face and the voice — but the plan continues.”

‘Parkinson’s is grinding away at me’

Estabrooks told reporters his battle with Parkinson’s disease — which he revealed publicly in September 2010 — was the main reason he had decided not to run again.

“I have 500 clean, polished election signs in my basement and if my health was ready, I would go again in a minute. But I just can’t go,” he said.

Bill Estabrooks has been battling Parkinson's disease for several years.

“Parkinson’s is grinding away at me.”

Estabrooks was first elected to the provincial legislature as MLA for Timberlea-Prospect in 1998 and was re-elected in 1999, 2003, 2006 and again in 2009.

Before his election, he was a school teacher and taught at various schools including Sir John A. Macdonald High School in Tantallon, Sackville High School in Lower Sackville and Brookside Junior High School in Prospect.

Estabrooks said he had previously spoken to the premier about stepping away from his cabinet responsibilities and said Dexter had been supportive of his plans.

“It’s tough. I’ll miss it,” Estabrooks told reporters, his voice breaking.

The devastated family members of a Cape Breton woman whose body was found stuffed into a hockey bag on the Mira River are appealing for her killer to come forward.

The body of Laura Jessome — of Little Bras d’Or, N.S. — was recovered from the river Friday evening. The 21-year-old woman’s death is being treated as a homicide.

“She was a beautiful little girl. She was loved by so many and by her family,” said Edna Jessome, Laura’s mother.

“I just want to know whoever did this. I just want them caught. Somebody must know something. My little girl is gone now and I can’t get her back. I want them caught.”

Jessome said her daughter had been battling a drug addiction for several years, but that’s not how her family remembers her.

“She was kind-hearted, she loved everybody, she didn’t judge people, she loved animals,” Jessome told CBC News on Wednesday.

“She loved looking at the stars and explaining what each one was. She was a precious little thing.”

According to court documents obtained by CBC News, Laura Jessome had suffered violence in her life.

She was the victim of an assault in 2010 and had a restraining order against her male assailant. The same man was found guilty of assaulting Jessome’s father and threatening her father and sister.

In December, the man forcibly confined Jessome and was found guilty of violating a court order to stay away from her. He was sentenced on April 13 to serve five months and 17 days in jail.

Cape Breton Regional Police have not said how Jessome died or how long her body had been in the river.

Edna Jessome, Laura Jessome's mother, says she believes someone has information that could help the police investigation.

Jamie Jessome, Laura’s older sister, said she’d lost her best friend.

“I don’t even know if I’m angry, I think it’s sick,” she told CBC News.

“Whoever you are, put yourself in some people’s shoes. People can’t live through this. I love you Laura, with all my heart and I hope that God takes good care of you.”

Visitation for Jessome is Wednesday evening and her funeral will be held on Thursday.

Edna Jessome said her family believes somebody has information that could crack the police investigation.

“That’s our baby girl we’re going to miss her for the rest of our lives. Somebody, please, come forward and help,” she said.

“She didn’t deserve this.”

French journalist Romeo Langlois, abducted a month ago by left-wing Farc rebels in Colombia, has been released.

He was handed over to a group of international mediators in the jungle in the south of the country.

A smiling Mr Langlois spoke to reporters and said that he was fine and had been well-treated.

The France 24 reporter was captured while filming the destruction of cocaine laboratories by army soldiers in the Caqueta region.

Colombia suspended operations in the area for the handover.

On Sunday, the rebels announced they would release Mr Langlois, 35, to a mediation committee consisting of members of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), French envoy Jean-Baptiste Chauvin and peace activist Piedad Cordoba.

The journalist walked through a crowd of villagers with Farc rebels before giving a short news conference.

“Other than being held for a month after being wounded, the rest has gone well,” he said, adding that he was “a little tired but fine”.

“I was treated just like any guerrilla combatant who was injured, I mean, it was harsh with few supplies, with what there was, but I was never tied up… They always treated me like a guest,” he added.

But Mr Langlois also said he was sorry both sides in the conflict had tried to use him for political reasons.

From the village of San Isidro, Mr Langlois will go to the city of Florencia, in Caqueta, a few hours away by road.

It is not yet clear whether he will spent the night there, or if he will then travel to the Colombian capital, or go straight to France.

‘POW’

Mr Langlois had been filming the destruction of cocaine laboratories by army soldiers in the Caqueta region.

A woman inspects the wound on Romeo Langlois' armRomeo Langlois was wounded in the arm when he was abducted

The army said he was wounded in the arm when the group came under attack.

He then ran towards the rebels who later declared him a “prisoner of war”.

A video broadcast by Venezuelan TV channel Telesur earlier this week showed Mr Langlois in a camp in the jungle.

He appeared with a bandage around his left elbow and was also shown being treated for his wound.

Mr Langlois said he expected his reporting trip to last no more than a couple of hours.

“You know what you are exposed to when you undertake this kind of activity, but the truth is I didn’t think it was going to get so big,” he said.

He said he did not know the area was a danger zone.

It is not clear when the video was recorded.

Despite his experience Mr Langlois hopes the Colombian army will keep taking journalists to the front line saying: “This is a forgotten conflict, and we need to keep covering it from both sides”.

Since 2002 Farc has seen its numbers halved in the face of concerted attacks from the US-backed military.

But in the last three years they have stepped up their attacks and re-taken the initiative in some parts of the country, helped with income from the drugs trade and extortion.

Caqueta is home to the Farc’s Southern Bloc, one of seven fighting divisions spread across the country.

The area is also important for the cocaine trade, with guerrillas growing coca and processing cocaine.

In February Farc announced it was ending its policy of kidnappings, and earlier this month released 10 hostages who had been held for more than a decade.

The Farc commander-in-chief, Rodrigo Londono, better known by his alias of Timochenko, has offered to hold peace talks with the government. So far President Juan Manuel Santos has refused.

The Detroit Red Wings have announced they will hold a news conference at 11 a.m. Thursday at Joe Louis Arena, with participants including defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom and general manager Ken Holland.

Lidstrom, 42, has been debating whether to retire or return. Lidstrom has not, in recent years, held a news conference to announce he has re-signed.

One of Lidstrom’s former teammates, Aaron Ward, posted on Twitter that Lidstrom will announce his retirement.

Lidstrom has been with the Wings since they drafted him 53rd overall in 1989. He went on to become one of hockey’s all-time greatest defensemen, winner of seven Norris trophies. He has won four Stanley Cups, winning the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2002. He became the first European born-and-trainer player to captain a team to the NHL title in 2008.

The Red Wings’ Ken Holland wouldn’t confirm anything when he emerged from the general managers meetings on Wednesday, saying Lidstrom had played 20 years in the NHL and had earned the right to make his own announcement.

Kordell Stewart in a game against Cleveland in 1999 at Three Rivers Stadium.

One of the most popular yet polarizing local sports figures of the 1990’s and early 2000’s, Kordell Stewart returned to Pittsburgh today to “retire” as a Steeler, nearly a decade after he last played for the team.

A second round draft pick in 1995, Stewart played eight seasons in Pittsburgh. He rose to fame during his first two seasons when he saw game action as a wide receiver, a quarterback, a running back and even a punter, earning him the nickname “Slash.”

He became the team’s starting quarterback in 1997, leading the team to the AFC Championship. In 2001, he was the AFC Offensive Player of the Year, the team MVP and a Pro Bowl selection.

Stewart also was a target of rumors about his personal life and, according to him, death threats during seasons in which he struggled.

Of returning to Pittsburgh today for his “retirement,” Stewart said: “It’s not closure in a negative way, it’s closure in a positive way … I had a great time doing it. It’s about the experience.”

After leaving the Steelers, Stewart signed as a free-agent with Chicago in 2003 and played a season there before finishing his career with two seasons as a member of the Baltimore Ravens. He has since worked as an NFL analyst on ESPN. He resides in Atlanta with his wife and son. Former quarterback Mike Tomczak and tackle John Jackson also returned to “retire” as Steelers years after their playing careers ended.

One of the stars of a pornographic movie shot partly at the historic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum said he received a congratulatory call from rapper Snoop Dogg, who saw a story about the experience in Wednesday’s Los Angeles Times.

The performer, who goes by the name Mr. Marcus, said Snoop Dogg telephoned him after seeing The Times’ report that the Coliseum — a national historic landmark built as a World War I memorial and home to two Summer Olympic Games — was used as a location for “The Gangbang Girl #32” in 2001. It’s unclear how the filmmaker obtained access to the taxpayer-owned stadium.

“He was excited,” Marcus told The Times. “He wants a copy of the movie. I told him I tried to get it for him in exchange for some tickets to the Powerhouse concert.”

Marcus, an L.A. native, said he had been inundated with calls, texts and emails all morning.

“It’s great,” he said. “I just told my Mom, and she was all excited. She said, ‘That’s my boy.’ ”

Meanwhile, a telephone number listed for Anabolic Video, which produced the film, answered to a busy signal throughout the morning.

The filming at the stadium was done at night, with the Coliseum’s towering lights blazing and its rows of distinctive red and white seats framing many of the scenes. The video also shows the stadium’s signature tunnel, which the Trojan team charges through at the start of games, as well as a sliver of the iconic peristyle, the arched entrance to the Coliseum.

“I was just in awe that we were at the Coliseum,” Marcus told The Times in an earlier interview. “I’ve made movies for about 20 years and I’ve done a lot of things, but that one really stands out…. I mean, who gets to have sex on the Coliseum floor?”

Marcus said the football-themed footage was shot on a single night and included some non-explicit scenes filmed in a Coliseum locker room that did not make the final cut. The Coliseum is not identified by name in the video, which was released in 2002. About half of the 90-minute movie was filmed elsewhere.

The Coliseum is jointly run by the city, county and state, which owns the land.

Gaining access to the locked stadium and firing up the field lights typically requires the approval of a high-ranking manager, according to people familiar with Coliseum operations, who requested anonymity because they are not allowed to speak publicly on the matter.

Seattle software engineer Justin Ferrari had just picked up his parents from the airport for a visit, his two young children in tow, when a bullet slammed through a window of the family van and into his head. Ferrari died in his father’s arms.

“He just happened to be in the wrong place, wrong day. But now in Seattle, they’re shooting everywhere,” said Massaret Habeti, who ushered Ferrari’s distraught mother and young children into her restaurant immediately after Thursday’s shooting.

Ferrari’s death was one of several cases of bystanders cut down by gunfire across Seattle in recent days, shootings that have brought the city’s long-simmering gun violence problem alarmingly home to neighborhoods across the city.

On Saturday, 33-year-old teacher’s aide Ryan Burr was waiting to cross the street near the Space Needle when a bullet — apparently aimed at someone else during an argument — struck him in the leg. The gunman fled into the crowds at the nearby Folklife Festival, underway at Seattle Center, where police later arrested a suspect.

“I never saw any fight that preceded this. I never even saw the person,” Burr, who was treated at the hospital and released, said in an interview.  “What I heard was that somebody bashed the guy’s face with a skateboard, and it escalated from there.”

Police also were investigating four drive-by shootings early Sunday morning, including the case of a teenage girl who had to duck behind a dresser as a hail of bullets hit her bedroom.

That same night, a home invasion left a man with a life-threatening gunshot wound to the chest. And three people were arrested early Tuesday after multiple reports of gunshots fired at a park along Lake Washington.

These incidents happened in a city already reeling from a shooting April 22 in Pioneer Square, adjacent to the city’s downtown financial and shopping districts. In that incident, Nicole Westbrook, 21, a culinary student who had just moved to Seattle, was killed by a shot from a moving car while walking home with her boyfriend.

In all, more than 60 rounds were recorded in the city over the Memorial Day weekend, Deputy Police Chief Nick Metz said at a briefing for the Seattle City Council on Tuesday. “We’re absolutely much better than this. So this is really a sad thing to see,” he said.

The violence, especially in the case of Ferrari’s death, Metz said, has  “created a great deal of concern throughout the city because of its randomness — and the fact that it could have been just about anybody at that point in time.”

Violence appears random

Police suspect gang involvement in at least some of the shootings. Seattle, like most urban areas, has been troubled with gang violence over the years, but its overall homicide rate has been among the lowest in the country. The recent shootings, though — 15 murders so far, compared to 21 in all of 2011 — threaten to put a dent in Seattle’s record, City Councilman Nick Licata warned.

“If we continue at the rate we’re going this year, it’ll be about a 20% increase. Which is not good,” he said.

One of the most troubling features of the recent incidents is that on at least two occasions, police responding to incidents were greeted by hostile crowds who did not immediately allow officers to do their work. In one case, on May 16, medics were delayed reaching the victim of a shooting at a south Seattle fast food restaurant after several young men at the scene stripped off their shirts and challenged police officers to a fight.

There have been long-standing complaints, especially among minorities, about heavy-handed police tactics. The U.S. Justice Department announced in December that it had found a “pattern or practice of excessive force” in the department, though it did not find a clear pattern of bias. Federal authorities have been in discussions with the city for how to resolve the issue.

Tuesday’s City Council discussion dwelled heavily on the problem of getting citizens to cooperate with police to identify suspects and make arrests, and Licata suggested that reforms initiated as part of the Justice Department review could help improve the community’s perceptions.

“I think the sooner we move in with a strong and fair agreement with the [Department of Justice] and the community sees that, I think that’ll help give them confidence,” he said.

Police said they are already stepping up patrols, with a number of officers working overtime through the weekend, and are working with community groups and schools on anti-violence initiatives.

“We want to make it clear that we’re there, and if you’re going to be stupid enough to commit violence, you’re going to be arrested, and you are going to go to jail,” Metz said.
