Democrat Robin Carnahan and Republican Roy Blunt have won their party nominations for Senate in Missouri, setting up one of the most closely watched general election battles of 2010.

Both candidates hail from prominent Missouri political families and both started duking it out months ago in anticipation of a showdown in November. USA TODAY rates the general election a toss up.

“Congressman Roy Blunt is the consummate Washington insider who votes with the corporate special interests every chance he gets,” Sen. Robert Menendez, chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, said in a statement. “The general election begins tomorrow.”

Sen. John Cornyn, chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, fired back: “If Missourians elect Robin Carnahan to the U.S. Senate, they can expect more spending, higher taxes, and bigger government in Washington from the Obama Democrats.”

Carnahan, Missouri’s Secretary of State, is the granddaughter of a seven-term congressman and the daughter of a two-term governor. Her mother was a U.S. senator for two years. Her campaign comes a decade after her father, Mel Carnahan, died in a plane crash while running for the Senate.

Seven-term House veteran Roy Blunt also comes from a powerful family in the state. Blunt is the son of a state legislator and the father of a former governor.
