Tuesday June 18, 2013             6:38 pm

Beaverton is getting ready to

crown a new Miss Beaverton! On Saturday, June 29,

seven wonderful ladies will compete for the title and

scholarship at the Beaverton Activity Center.

This year’s contestants are:

n Krista Baldridge, the daughter of Glenda and

Jason Baldridge, and a 2013 graduate of Beaverton

High School. She will be playing piano as her talent.

n Carlie Schuler, the daughter of Tod Schuler and

Lisa Maxson, and a 2013 graduate of Beaverton High

School. Her talent will be singing.

n Kaitlyn Hansen, the daughter of Ty and Julie

Hansen and an incoming senior at Beaverton High

School. She will be doing a dramatic reading for the

talent portion of the competition.

n Haley Forbes, the daughter of Jim and Shellie

Forbes and an incoming senior at Beaverton High

School. Her talent will be dancing.

n Erica Baldridge, the daughter of Glenda and

Jason Baldridge and an incoming junior at Beaverton

High. School. Her talent will be dancing.n Emma Keeley, the daughter of Dave and Karen Keeley,

n Hannah Ware, daughter of Greg Ware and Mary Weston,

an incoming junior at Beaverton High School. She will be

singing for the talent portion of the competition.

Krista, Kaitlyn and Emma are all returning participants.

Interesting to note as well that Krista and Erica will be competing

as sisters!

“We started preparing for the pageant the first week of

May,” said coordinator Gwen McCulloch. “The young ladies

attend practices twice a week, writing an essay for the judges

to read, preparing their on stage performances and walking

in heels. For some of these ladies it will be the first time they

have been on a stage in front of a crowd and we want them to

be ready.”

McCulloch said that even before the girls step on stage,

they are already being evaluated.

“Not everyone knows, but the judging doesn’t begin at

the pageant. The judges meet with each girl and conduct

a 10-minute interview the afternoon of the pageant,” she

explained. “They also receive an essay prior to the pageant

so they are able to know a little background about the girls

before to meeting them. The night of the pageant the girls will

be judged on their 60-second introduction, talent and evening

gown.”

Judges will be looking for poise, neatness, character etc., all

based on a points system.

“With such a diverse group of young ladies, this should be

an interesting pageant,” McCulloch noted.

“We encourage the community to come out and support our

local youth,” she invited. “The Miss Beaverton Scholarship

Pageant is one of the longest running pageants in Michigan,

with your help it will continue to provide scholarship opportunities.”

Why not start off the 4th of July Celebration by cheering

on your favorite contestant? The pageant will be held June 29

at 7 p.m. It will be an evening full of fun, entertainment and

door prizes. Tickets will be $ 5 at the door, programs will be

Heinrich Rohrer, who shared the 1986 Nobel Prize in Physics for inventing a microscope that made it possible to see individual atoms and move them around, an achievement that led to vastly faster computing and greatly advanced molecular biology, died on Thursday night or early Friday morning in Wollerau, Switzerland. He was 79.

His family said he had died of natural causes.

Dr. Rohrer and his colleague Gerd Binnig introduced the device, the scanning tunneling microscope, or STM, at an I.B.M. laboratory in Zurich in 1981, after decades of explosive growth in microscopy. The STM enabled scientists to make accurate images of details as tiny as one-25th the diameter of a typical atom.

The advance helped give rise to the science of nanotechnology: the manipulation of matter at the atomic or molecular scale. Nanotechnology has revealed the structure of things like viruses and computer chips and improved industrial processes like metal fabrication and the manufacture of computer components, clothing, cosmetics and paint.

Dr. Rohrer and Dr. Binnig shared the Nobel Prize with Ernst Ruska, who invented the electron microscope in 1931.

“The invention of the scanning tunneling microscope was a seminal moment in the history of science and information technology,” John E. Kelly III, an I.B.M. senior vice president and director of research, said in a statement. “This invention gave scientists the ability to image, measure and manipulate atoms for the first time, and opened new avenues for information technology that we are still pursuing today.”

The Nobel committee said Dr. Rohrer and Dr. Binnig had opened up “entirely new fields” for “the study of the structure of matter.”

Dr. Rohrer and Dr. Binnig, who had both done work in superconductivity and magnetic fields, were initially interested in studying the little-understood and complex atomic structures that make up the surfaces of minerals. It is at their surfaces that materials interact with the physical world.

But they found that electron microscopes, which investigate the internal arrangements of materials, did not help. The scientists decided they needed to develop a new type of microscope.

Their idea for the microscope’s “lens” was an exceedingly thin wire tip — the width of a single atom. Through a quantum mechanical effect called tunneling, a tiny current of electricity would flow from the tip to a surface to be scanned. The closer the probe got to a surface, the more electricity would flow. A computer would interpret the subtle changes in current to make a contour map of the hills and valleys of the atomic terrain.

The scientists’ colleagues at I.B.M. were skeptical of the project. As Dr. Rohrer recalled, “They all said, ‘You are completely crazy — but if it works you’ll get the Nobel Prize.’ ”

Dr. Rohrer and Dr. Binnig successfully tested the device in 1981. By 1987, they had captured images as small as 0.25 billionths of an inch.

Using the wire as a tool, they began moving individual atoms around like building blocks. In 1990, Dr. Rohrer and Dr. Binnig used it to spell I.B.M. in xenon atoms on a nickel crystal. Other scanning microscopes have been developed to measure data like temperature and magnetism at extremely minute levels.

Heinrich Rohrer was born in Buchs, St. Gallen, Switzerland, on June 6, 1933, as his parents’ third child, half an hour after his twin sister. He went to a country school until the family moved to Zurich in 1949. His favorite subjects were mathematics, science, and Latin and Greek. He concentrated on physics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and graduated in 1955. He earned his Ph.D. there in 1960.

Moving to the United States, Dr. Rohrer spent two years at Rutgers University doing postdoctoral research on superconductors and metals. He joined I.B.M. in 1963.

In an interview with the Nobel Foundation in 2008, he said I.B.M. had granted him the “freedom to make mistakes.”

“Unfortunately,” he added, “this freedom for scientists gets more and more lost. Otherwise you do the common things. You don’t dare to do something beyond what everybody else thinks.”

Dr. Rohrer is survived by his wife, Rose-Marie Rohrer-Egger; his daughters, Doris Rohrer Hansen and Ellen Rohrer; and two grandchildren.

One of the latest uses of Dr. Rohrer’s invention came this year, when I.B.M. scientists made what they call history’s tiniest stop-action film, as verified by Guinness World Records. Called “A Boy and His Atom,” the film assembles atoms into the image of a small boy and shows him dancing, bouncing about and playing catch with an atom. It was made by moving atoms frame by frame — 250 frames in all — and magnifying them 100 million times.

As the search for Kathlynn Shepard, 15, entered its third day today, new details emerged about the man accused of kidnapping her and a younger girl from a school bus stop before he killed himself in his truck in a secluded area.

Police have identified Michael Klunder, a registered sex offender from Stratford, Iowa, as the sole suspect in the girls’ abduction. He was found dead on Monday evening, four hours after he allegedly kidnapped Kathlynn and her 12-year-old companion as the two got off a school bus around 4 p.m. Monday, Lt. Robert Hanson of the Iowa Department of Public Safety told ABC News.com.

Klunder had spent years in and out of prison, including time served for a 1991 conviction on charges that he kidnapped and assaulted a woman, and kidnapped two 3-year-olds. The children were later found alive.

Klunder allegedly drove the girls around in his truck for hours on Monday, crisscrossing large swaths of the rural areas near the town of Dayton, police said.

Around 5:30 p.m. Monday, just as authorities were about to issue an Amber Alert, police learned that the 12-year-old had escaped from the parked truck and hid out in the woods, and then made her way to a nearby house and called for help, Hanson said.

That girl, who has not been identified, was taken to a hospital and later discharged.

Around 8 p.m. police located Klunder’s pickup truck and found him dead inside.

There were, however, no signs of Kathlynn.

Hundreds of police officers and volunteers have been scouring a network of rural roads and trails in the search for 15-year-old. Police have deployed aircraft and dogs as part of the effort.

Police are treating the search for Kathlynn as a rescue, but as the days pass the chances of finding her alive dwindle, police said.

Kathlynn is described as 5 feet 6 inches tall, and weighing 160 pounds. She was last seen wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and a Vikings cap.

25 April 2013             03:23 ET

Two Tibetan monks have died after setting themselves alight in southern China’s Sichuan province, reports say.

The monks, aged 20 and 23, set themselves on fire at the Kirti monastery in Aba county, said Radio Free Asia and Free Tibet.

The monastery has been a focal point of protests in recent months.

More than 100 Tibetans, mostly young monks, have set themselves on fire since 2011 – many fatally – in apparent protest against Chinese rule.

The monks, who reports identify as Lobsang Dawa, 20, and Konchog Woeser, 23, set themselves on fire on Wednesday, US-based Radio Free Asia and London-based Free Tibet said.

The Tibet Divide

  • China says Tibet has always been part of its territory
  • Tibet had long periods of autonomy
  • China launched a military assault in 1950
  • Opposition to Chinese rule led to a bloody uprising in 1959
  • Tibet’s spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, fled to India
  • Dalai Lama now advocates a “middle way” with Beijing, seeking autonomy but not independence

The monks at the monastery held prayers for the two who died and their bodies were to be cremated on Thursday, Radio Free Asia added.

The majority of the self-immolations since 2011 have taken place in ethnic Tibetan areas outside Tibet, many in Aba county.

Most involved Buddhist monks or nuns calling, Tibetan activist groups say, for greater religious freedom and the return of their exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.

The Chinese government accuses the Dalai Lama of orchestrating the protests, a charge he strongly rejects.

Foreign media are banned from the region, making verifying the self-immolation cases difficult. Chinese state media have confirmed some but not all.

In January, China found two men guilty of inciting immolations in Sichuan, believed to be the first cases since a legal ruling stipulating that anyone aiding immolations would be charged with murder.

Tibetan activists said the men, one of whom received a commuted death sentence and the other 10 years in jail, were forced to confess to the charges.

Skateboarding in a war zone

In Kabul, an NGO called Skateistan is teaching street kids how to ride boards in a gigantic, custom-built indoor skate park – and giving them a source of education, community and empowerment. The pioneering founder, Oliver Percovich, will discuss the charity’s work and screen short films on April 21 as part of an all-day event dedicated to the culture and politics of contemporary Afghanistan. He’ll get Londoners on wheels, too, with an all-abilities skate lesson along the banks of the Thames.
