Demonstration: Jim Marcus and Faith Kroll performed a live sex act on stage at the Northwestern University while more than 100 students watched

11:51 AM on 4th March 2011

A live sex act was performed in front of a group of students at a top university which involved a woman being brought to orgasm by a machine-powered saw with a phallic object instead of a blade.

Northwestern University, in Chicago, which charges more than $40,000 a year in fees, held the unusual demonstration at the campus last week in which a group of students watched a naked woman being penetrated by the powerful sex toy.

The graphic act was performed in front of about 100 students in psychology professor John Michael Bailey’s human sexuality class.

The demonstration occurred after class, and attendance was optional.

Ken Melvoin-Berg, co-owner of Weird Chicago Tours, was paid around $400 to guest lecture at the university which was organised by Professor Bailey.

His discussion on bondage, swinging and other sexual fetishes included video footage of a woman who was having an orgasm, but when it was deemed unrealistic, the idea of a live sex act was introduced.

After the initial discussion at the Ryan Family Auditorium, the class were told that a couple were going to demonstrate the use of a sex toy and the female orgasm.

After the initial discussion at the Ryan Family Auditorium, the class were told that a couple were going to demonstrate the use of a sex toy and the female orgasm.

Both Professor Bailey and Mr Melvoin-Berg said they gave the students multiple warnings about how graphic it was going to be and gave them the option of leaving, which some did.

The woman undressed and got on stage with her male partner, who used the device to bring her to orgasm.

Mr Melvoin-Berg said the couple are exhibitionists who enjoy having people watch them have sex, and they were not paid for the demonstration.

Professor Bailey defended the unusual demonstration, saying in a statement: ‘The students find the events to be quite valuable, typically, because engaging real people in conversation provides useful examples and extensions of concepts students learn about in traditional academic ways.’

Demonstrators Jim Marcus and his fiancée Faith Kroll said they had not planned to show off the sex act at first but it seemed like a reasonable thing to do after the disappointing video footage.

Mr Marcus, a musician who also teaches sex education, told the Chicago Tribune: ‘It seems like a human sexuality class is a smart place to dispel some of the mistakes that we saw in the video.

‘What we did was not designed to titillate people, but to educate people.’

Miss Kroll said: ‘I was more than happy to (do it). We have fun with it. I’m an exhibitionist. I enjoy the attention, being seen by other people.

‘It was entertaining because there were a lot of curious minds, so that was cool.’

Northwestern senior Justin Smith, 21, said: ‘It is probably something I will remember for the rest of my life.

‘We were watching a video on sexual arousal. They thought, “Why not give a demonstration?”

‘The main guy, Ken, said, “Are you ready for the live sex show?” We were like, “OK”.’

He confirmed that  there were several warnings beforehand and some students trickled out.

Most students were sitting in the auditorium’s balcony, including a student’s mother who attended class that day.

Student Nick Wilson said: ‘A few people left, not many. Those that stayed were totally into it and tried to get a better view.’

Mr Melvoin-Berg called it an educational experience for the students, and said it lasted about three minutes.

‘We wanted to share not only our lifestyles and talk about it, but demonstrate what we do in our personal lives.

‘The students seemed to be incredibly pleased. We had a number of them that got closer and closer.

‘It let them know what’s out there and how far people go. Understanding this subject is a valuable tool to utilise in their future careers.’

Professor Bailey, who gets extra funding from the university’s College of Arts and Sciences for lectures and other activities he holds after class, said it was too early to say whether or not he regretted it but admitted: ‘I certainly have no regrets concerning Northwestern students, who have demonstrated that they are open-minded grown ups rather than fragile children.’

University spokesman Alan Cubbage told the Chicago Tribune that the issue had not been raised and no one had filed a complaint.

He said: ‘Northwestern University faculty members engage in teaching and research on a wide variety of topics, some of them controversial and at the leading edge of their respective disciplines.

However, the president of Northwestern University Morton Schapiro said today he was launching an investigation as he was ‘troubled and disappointed’ by what happened.

He said: ‘I feel it represented extremely poor judgment on the part of our faculty member.

‘I simply do not believe this was appropriate, necessary, or in keeping with Northwestern University’s academic mission.

Schapiro said he has directed that the incident be fully investigated, and he wants to clarify what constitutes ‘appropriate pedagogy’.

‘Many members of the Northwestern community are disturbed by what took place on our campus and so am I.’

For those looking for info on Faith Kroll the 25-yr-old exhibitionist who was part of a live demonstration on how to use a sex toy shaped liked a saw to a class at Northwestern University there’s not much info on Kroll on the web. Miss Kroll has responded, via Twitter, where Kroll tweeted she’d given an interview with ABC who was ‘super respectful’. Other tweets from Kroll:

‘@JDugizzle thanks so much for the support. I found it shocking that they are still trying to teach in schools that the g spot may not exist’, and,

‘it was a psych sexuality class we were asked to be there because of our knowledge on a different type of sexuality.’,

And,

‘We didn’t break any laws’.

And,

While the main focus of the Northwestern University story has been on Professor J. Michael Bailey, there’s another individual who seems to have flown beneath the radar of scrutiny, Ken Melvoin-Berg. Turns out, Berg is quite the interesting fellow, a less than six degrees to the occult. According to CNN, it was Berg who showed up with Faith Krall and Krall’s 44-yr-old fiance Jim Marcus. And, according to CNN, it was Berg who ‘suggested’ the sex toy ‘demonstration’.

CNN:

Bailey invited speaker Ken Melvoin-Berg, co-owner of Weird Chicago Tours, who brought a woman and a man for a discussion on the female orgasm. Melvoin-Berg suggested they demonstrate use of high-powered equipment they brought, said the professor, who agreed to the idea.

“We gave them plenty of warning. We had nobody leave at that point,” Melvoin-Berg told CNN Chicago affiliate WLS, adding the demonstration was meant to be educational. “We only got positive feedback, 100% positive feedback during and after. The students were respectful. They were smart and asked good questions, intelligent questions and seemed engaged in the idea of human sexuality,” said Melvoin-Berg.

Just who is Ken Melvoin-Berg? Is Melvoin-Berg a noted ‘sexpert?’ The photo below, the Ouija Board tattoo on Ken Melvoin-Berg’s back.

Turns out the guy who suggested the demonstration to the Northwestern University class is an ‘Chicago area psychic detective, ghost hunter, historian, author, lecturer and co-owner of Weird Chicago Tours’. Melvoin-Berg has appeared on TV, worked with the cops catching serial killers and is a medium who has also has a Chicago area ‘sex tour’ who used to own an occult bookstore.

More on Melvoin-Berg’s bio:

In 2006 Ken co-founded Weird Chicago Tours. Some of the Chicago tours Ken has developed and hosts are, Devil and the White City, Serial Killer, Public Enemies, John Dillinger, and the Red Light District Sex Tours. Notably, Ken’s Red Light District Sex tour and Serial Killer tours are the first and only of their kind in the U.S. Along with co-owner, author Troy Taylor, he also hosts various pub crawls including Chicago’s first Zombie themed pub crawl.

Ken is frequently consulted by the media and has appeared on numerous local and international TV shows about the supernatural, paranormal, occult and serial killers. Some of his appearances include: 3 episodes of Discovery Chanel’s Ghost Lab, The Travel Channel’s World’s Most Terrifying Places, The Biography Channel’s, HH Holmes and the Murder Castle, Dutch national TV, Blood, Murder and Sausage, Chicago Local CBS and WGN news, and Chicago Public Radio. Ken also contributes to podcasts such as Ghost Man and Demon Hunter Show and Weird Chicago Podcasts. In addition, Ken is frequently the subject of articles in local newspapers and magazines such as The Chicago Tribune, Chicago Red Eye, and Time Out Chicago. He is also the subject of a documentary by Matthew Arauz and Brant McCrea called Paranormal.

Ken Melvoin-Berg wrote the foreword for the book, Sex & The Supernatural.
