A Chinese man was sentenced to death Friday for holding six women as sex slaves in an underground lair and ordering the deaths of two of them, state media reported.

A court in Luoyang city convicted Li Hao on charges of murder, rape, organized prostitution, illegal detention and selling pornography, state-run Xinhua said.

Li, who is married with a young son, had worked for the technological supervision bureau in the city in Henan province.

The 35-year-old dug the dungeon in the basement of a residential compound he bought in 2009, the court heard, according to Xinhua.

He then used the underground room to hold women he tricked into coming to the property. Police investigations indicated the six were held captive for between two and 21 months.

Li repeatedly raped the women, forced them to appear in pornographic web shows from March to April 2011 and made them have sex with customers for a brief period last year, the court heard.

Three of the women were also found guilty of murder over the killings of two of their fellow captives, Xinhua reported.

However, the court was lenient in its judgment of the women because of the circumstances in which they were held, finding they acted under instruction, and in one case coercion, from Li. One of the women was sentenced to three years in prison and the other two were placed on probation.

The women had worked at karaoke bars, hair salons and a massage shop before they were kidnapped by Li, police are cited as saying.

Li’s intention was to make money from selling the women’s sexual services and uploading obscene videos to the Internet, the court heard.

His actions were brought to light only after one of the women escaped in September last year and alerted police. Li was then arrested.

Soon afterward, the head of the public security bureau in Luoyang apologized for the police failure to uncover the dungeon sooner and said they were taking new steps to clamp down on vice, according to a Xinhua report at the time.

The new parlor game gripping two cities a thousand miles apart — “Who Won the Powerball” — ramped up Friday amid rumors, speculation and tantalizing clues.

In Missouri, the rural, 500-resident town of Dearborn was buzzing with speculation ahead of a scheduled 12 p.m. news conference with lottery officials at a high school to announce what the agency called “the winners” of the Show Me State share of the record-setting Powerball jackpot.

While the release seemed to hint at the possibility of a group win, Kansas City area media outlets were reporting the winning ticket is held by a 52-year-old Dearborn man named Mark Hill.

“It was us,” Hill’s son, Jason Hill, quoted his dad as saying in announcing the win to the family, reported CNN affiliate KCTV.

“I hope we all stay very grounded, stay humble and don’t forget who we are,” he told the station.

Missouri Lottery officials have not yet confirmed the identity of the winner, who will get half of the largest Powerball jackpot ever, $587.5 million.

The question of who won the Arizona jackpot took an interesting twist Thursday when a man walked into a convenience store in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, to casually check a stash of lottery tickets, CNN affiliate WJLA reported. The man said he’d bought at least one of the tickets in Arizona, according to store clerk Nagassi Ghebre.

He pumps his arms a few times, then gives the ticket to Ghebre, and eventually a customer for verification.

“And that’s when he said, ‘I gotta get out of here’ and he took off,” Ghebre said. “He came back a minute later and said, ‘I forgot to get my gas.’ “

At a Dearborn Trex Mart gas station, clerk Kristi Williams asked every customer the same question Thursday after news broke that the winning ticket was purchased there.

“As soon as they walk in the door, ‘Have you checked your ticket?’ “she told CNN affiliate KCTV of Kansas City.

The other winning ticket was sold thousands of miles away at the Four Sons Food Store in Fountain Hills, just outside of Phoenix, Arizona, state lottery spokeswoman Karen Bach said. The winner hasn’t come forward there.

“Unbelievable,” said Four Sons manager Bob Chebat. “Everyone comes in here buying tickets, joking they’ll take care of you if they win. But chances are so slim that it becomes standard that no one does win. I just don’t know what to say. I’m shocked. I hope I was the guy who sold the winning ticket.”

The Arizona store will receive $25,000 for selling the winning ticket, while the Missouri store will get $50,000. The payout to sellers varies state to state as it is determined by each state’s lottery officials.

The prize for the lottery — held in 42 states, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the District of Columbia — swelled to the largest in Powerball history after the jackpot rolled over 16 times without a winner.

It still doesn’t match the U.S. record payout of $656 million, set in March by a Mega Millions jackpot. Three winners split that pot.

California added its name Thursday to the states participating in Powerball, with the California Lottery Commission voting unanimously to adopt the mega-jackpot lottery game. Powerball tickets will go on sale in California on April 8, 2013.

Lottery officials previously urged winners to take their time coming forward.

Winners should sign the ticket, put it in a safe place and seek legal and financial advice before redeeming it, Missouri Lottery Director May Scheve Reardon said.

Whoever comes forward with the winning tickets may want to speak to Donald Lawson. The Michigan man won the $337 million Powerball prize in August and vowed that the new infusion of green would not change him — or his eating habits.

“I’m a millionaire now, but I’ll still go to McDonald’s,” he said as he stood smiling at the Michigan Lottery headquarters in Lansing.

Back in Dearborn, resident Bill Matney said he hoped the winning ticket holder didn’t “get deluged by a lot of people wanting part of their winnings.”

“And that they put it to a good use like charity,” he told KCTV. “I mean, who can spend that much money?”

The nephew of exiled Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng was tried Friday and sentenced to three years and three months in prison on charges related to a clash with local officials last spring, according to activist and family friend Hu Jia. Lawyers and human rights activists say Chen’s family was given just a few hours notice of the trial of Chen Kegui, 32. His relatives complained that the lawyers they chose to represent Chen Kegui were rejected by the court, giving them little hope of a fair trial.

Chen Guangcheng, a blind legal activist who campaigned against forced abortions, became the subject of international attention this spring after he escaped arbitrary and often violent house arrest. With the help of fellow activists he traveled to Beijing and was taken in by the U.S. Embassy. China demanded his return, provoking a standoff just as Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner arrived in the Chinese capital for pre-scheduled talks. After tortuous negotiations, Chen was allowed to leave China for the U.S with his wife and two children. In the U.S. he’s maintained a high profile, giving interviews and talks and being named “Rebel of the Year” by GQ magazine.

As Chen was preparing to leave China he was told that the central government would investigate the years of abuse he and his family faced at the hands of local officials in eastern Shandong province. But now it appears Chen’s own kin will be the only person to face punishment. On April 27, after news emerged that Chen Guangcheng had escaped the rings of guards patrolling his village of Dongshigu, two-dozen men stormed the house of his brother, Chen Guangfu. Chen Guangfu’s son Kegui used a kitchen knife to slash at the men. He was arrested days later on suspicion of homicide, but he was ultimately charged with intentional infliction of injury.

Two human rights lawyers appointed by his family, Si Weijiang and Ding Xikui, were blocked from representing Chen Kegui. Instead two lawyers from the local legal aid association were appointed by the Yinan County Court. His family argued that the two came from the same firms that supplied the court-appointed lawyers who represented Chen Guangcheng in 2006 after his chosen attorneys were detained by police. Chen Guangcheng was tried and convicted of “intentionally damaging property and gathering crowds to disturb transport order” and sentenced to four years in prison.

“They completely failed to defend Chen Guangcheng’s rights during the trial, and made no attempt to conceal their compliance with all kinds of procedural violations by the prosecution and the court,” Chen Kegui’s parents and wife said in a letter translated by Human Rights in China, an NGO. “Chen Kegui’s case will only follow suit.” On Friday Chen Kegui’s father was blocked from attending the trial on grounds that he was a witness and his mother was also blocked on the assertion that she too was a suspect, said Jerome Cohen, an expert on Chinese law at New York University and a longtime friend and adviser to the Chen family. “This is the ultimate example of judicial farce in China, not a happy example of how human rights will be protected by China’s new leadership!” Cohen wrote in an email. “The ‘trial’ was held in ways guaranteed to prevent any possible defense or any possible observer to attend.”

Chen’s supporters said before the trial that a conviction was inevitable. “Neither the process nor the results will be fair in this trial,” says Teng Biao, a lawyer who has helped the Chen family. “According to what actually happened, this should be a case of self defense and he should be found not guilty. But I don’t think that will happen.”

Coming shortly after the handover of China’s top leadership positions, Chen’s trial also offers clues to whether new Communist Party Secretary General Xi Jinping will take a different approach to sensitive rights cases. So far all indications are that he will follow the same path as his predecessors. “Chen Kegui’s trial is a good opportunity for the new leadership to learn from previous mistakes and break with years of contempt for the law in the case of Chen Guangcheng and his family,” said Maya Wang, a researcher for Human Rights Watch. “So far we haven’t seen that the new leadership wants to do that.”

The Atlanta Falcons moved to the brink of clinching a division championship.

Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints wound up with egg on their faces.

After racing to a 17-0 lead, the Falcons turned to their defense to make it stand up, picking off five of Brees’ passes and ending his NFL-record touchdown streak in a 23-13 victory over the Saints on Thursday night.

The Falcons (11-1) will clinch the NFC South with a month to go if Tampa Bay loses at Denver on Sunday. They also dealt a big blow to the Saints (5-7) and their fading playoff hopes.

William Moore had two of the five interceptions, which were the most of Brees’ career and came four days after he had two passes picked off and returned for touchdowns in a loss to San Francisco.

Brees had thrown a touchdown pass in 54 consecutive games, breaking Johnny Unitas’ long-standing record earlier this season. He had an apparent scoring pass to Darren Sproles late in the first half, but it was nullified by a penalty.

”I didn’t realize that until we walked off the field,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said. ”That’s an unbelievable streak. Drew Brees is an outstanding quarterback. The way the defense played tonight speaks volumes. The guys had gone out there and thrown touchdown after touchdown game after game after game.”

When the Saints arrived in Atlanta, their bus was pelted by eggs at the airport, a sign of the long rivalry between the teams. New Orleans had dominated in recent years, winning four in a row and 11 of 13.

This time, Michael Turner scored on Atlanta’s opening possession, Tony Gonzalez hauled in a touchdown pass from Matt Ryan, and Matt Bryant booted three field goals, including a 55-yarder.

The defense did the rest. Thomas DeCoudSean Weatherspoon and Jonathan Babineaux also had interceptions for Atlanta, and another pick by Corey Peters was wiped out by a penalty.

Brees had a couple of games with four picks, but nothing like this. He finished 28 of 50 for 341 yards.

The defending NFC South champion Saints lost their second in a row and will likely have to win out to have even a faint hope of making the postseason during a tumultuous year that was marred by a bounty scandal and a season-long suspension for coach Sean Payton.

After winning so many close games, the Falcons started this one as if they were intent on a rout.

Ryan completed a pass on the first play from scrimmage, then turned it over to a running game that has struggled most of the season. Turner burst around right end for a 35-yard gain. Jacquizz Rodgers broke off two straight 14-yard gains. Finally, it was Turner going in standing from 3 yards out, giving Atlanta a quick 7-0 lead.

That was Turner’s 58th touchdown in five seasons with the Falcons, breaking the team record he had shared with Terance Mathis.

Atlanta struck again in the opening minute of the second period. Julio Jones hauled in an 18-yard throw from Ryan, setting up a 17-yard touchdown pass to Gonzalez in the back of the end zone. He beat former teammate Curtis Lofton, then just flipped the ball over the goalposts instead of his customary basketball dunk.

Brees’ second interception, this one a sloppy pass behind running Chris Ivory that deflected into the arms of Sean Weatherspoon, set up Bryant’s 45-yard field goal for a 17-0 lead.

Then, suddenly, the game completely changed.

For the rest of the second quarter and most of the third, the Saints totally dominated. Mark Ingram scored on a 1-yard run, capping an 11-play, 80-yard drive, and New Orleans should have tacked on more points at the end of the half. But Brees made a rookie-like mistake with 12 seconds remaining, dumping a pass over the middle to Sproles with no timeouts. He was wrapped up at the Atlanta 3 and the clock ran out before the Saints could spike the ball.

But New Orleans got the ball to start the second half, and Brees went back to work. This time, he made a couple of nifty moves to avoid sacks, completing six passes on an 83-yard drive consuming 15 plays and more than 6 1/2 minutes. But the Falcons held again, forcing Garrett Hartley to boot a 21-yard field goal that cut it to 17-10.

Hartley connected again from much farther out on the Saints’ next possession, a 52-yarder that brought New Orleans even closer.

The Falcons, meanwhile, couldn’t do anything offensively. They failed to pick up a first down on five straight possessions, a stretch in which the Saints had a 289-30 lead in total yards and a staggering 18 first downs.

Finally, it was the Atlanta defense that turned things around late in the third.

Brees rolled to his right and threw over the middle, but Moore picked off the pass and returned it to the New Orleans 16. Ryan connected on first-down throws to Gonzalez and Roddy White to set up Bryant’s field goal.

Three winning Powerball tickets sold in South Carolina came within one number of the $587 million jackpot, according to the South Carolina Education Lottery.

One of those ticket holders used the quick pick option Wednesday afternoon to get his $1 million winning numbers in the Powerball lottery from Wednesday night.

Tickets sold in Arizona and Missouri matched all six numbers to win the record jackpot, Powerball officials said early Thursday morning.

Jerry Hucks, of Rock Hill, S.C., was warming up his truck after getting off work early Thursday morning when he remembered the sticky note where he jotted down Wednesday night’s winning Powerball numbers.

He flipped on the light inside the cab to see the first five numbers on the sticky note aligned perfectly with the last set of numbers printed on his ticket.

Hucks, a truck builder for Daimler Trucks in Cleveland, N.C., went back inside the plant and had a co-worker look at the ticket. His co-worker told him he won $1 million.

“I didn’t even have the truck door locked, and I had a $1 million ticket out there,” he told lottery officials when he arrived Thursday to collect his winnings. “Then I can’t believe I let three or four guys at work hold my ticket and Google the numbers screaming, ‘It’s a $1 million.’ ”

His parting words to them: “I’m not quitting, but I’m not working anymore overtime.”

He called his girlfriend to tell her the news and that he was headed home. She was worried it was taking him too long, but at one point he had to pull over to throw up, overcome he beat the 1 in 5,153,633 odds.

Hucks was one of three South Carolina Education Lottery players to successfully match the first five numbers drawn Wednesday night (5, 16, 22, 23 and 29; Powerball: 6). He bought his ticket on the way to work Wednesday and he had to stand in line. He’s glad he was patient and waited for his quick pick to print.

Hucks plans to pay off his house and return to work Friday.

South Carolina also had a $2 million winner. The six-figure winners matched all five white ball numbers drawn to win $1 million. One of the ticket holders purchased PowerPlay for an extra $1, to have the $1 million Match 5 prize increased to $2 million.

Overall there were 140,000 winning tickets sold in the Palmetto State totaling $5.3 million. These winners took home anywhere from $4 to $2 million.

A woman in Tualatin, Ore., says she’s at the end of her rope fighting a three-year battle with Wells Fargo for mistakenly stating she has missed mortgage payments on her home, which is now in foreclosure.

Dee Dingman, 79, and her late husband moved into their four-bedroom home in 1967. After her husband, Leland, died in March 2008, Dingman took out a new mortgage while she paid off his medical bills, never missing a payment. Court records show she promised to pay $308,000 plus interest on June 16, 2008.

The next year, after Wells Fargo’s acquisition of Wachovia was completed in Jan. 2009, Dingman began receiving foreclosure notices. She believes the bank did not corrrectly process her payment since around Oct. 2009. But her bank records show her mortgage payments have been deposited by Wells Fargo. Despite efforts to clear up the mistake and paying nearly $12,000 in attorney fees, her home is now in judicial foreclosure.

“I’m really very tired of it,” said Dingman. She has been employed by the local Kmart since it opened 40 years ago but stopped working when the store closed last month.

She continues to pay her monthly mortgage amount of over $2,300 while paying an attorney to help her clear up the mistake.

Tom Unger, spokesman for Wells Fargo, said the bank is trying to get to the bottom of the matter and no foreclosure sale is scheduled.

“We are very sensitive to Mrs. Dingman’s concerns but there are some details regarding her loan that still need to be addressed,” he said. “There is no foreclosure sale scheduled, giving us additional time to work with our customer.”

This is not the first time Wells Fargo has been involved in an error over a foreclosed home. The bank’s contractors mistakenly cleared out the home of a retired couple twice in Twentynine Palms, Calif., after confusing it with a neighboring foreclosed home.

The bank said it has worked with Dingman “since 2009 to identify options that would allow her to stay in the home.”

Dingman said there has been no cooperation from the bank.

“This is going on too long,” she said. “I just keep paying lawyers and I think it’s time to end this. It’s using quite a bit of my money and time. I just don’t need this and they don’t need it.”

“Foreclosure is always the very last option we explore with any customer,” Wells Fargo said in a statement. “We feel foreclosure is bad for the customer, bad for their neighborhood, bad for their community and bad for us as the lender. Our goal is to keep our customers in their homes, have them pay off their loans, and own their homes outright. Given that there is active litigation around their loan we can’t discuss the case in any more detail at this time.”

Though she is in good health, Dingman’s family and friends are concerned that stress from the possibility of losing her home is beginning to take a toll.

“Both I and, more so, her family have been very concerned for her health,” her family friend, Sue White, said. “She’s been really emotionally affected by this with a lot of crying and a lot of anguish. It’s really interrupted her joy in life at this point, as you can imagine.”

For these past few years, her payments were considered missing even though she has checks that have Wells Fargo’s stamp on the back after they have been deposited, said Dingman.
