A four-year-old boy has been crushed to death by a six-foot tombstone that became dislodged from its footing and toppled on him in a cemetery.
Carson Dean Cheney was visiting Glenwood Cemetery in Park City, Utah with his family and was playing with his older brother near the gravestone when tragedy struck.
Police are investigating how the stone became separated from its stand and fell on the youngster, crushing his upper body.
One witness said she overheard the boy’s mother telling family members he had been climbing on the stone when it fell on him.
His family struggled to move the heavy stone and he was trapped ‘for a time’, police Captain Phil Kirk told the Salt Lake Tribune.
‘He and his brother were playing in the cemetery,’ Park City Chief Wade Carpenter added to KSL.com.
‘I think the rest of the family were visiting in the cemetery, and my understanding was they were playing behind it.’
Police responded to a call from the cemetery at 6 p.m. on Thursday and the boy was rushed to Park City Medical Center, where he later died of his injuries.
‘This tragic accident has taken the life of our energetic, sweet, beloved little boy,’ the boy’s grandmother, Geri Gibbs, said in a statement.
‘We appreciate your thoughts and prayers, but wish for privacy at this difficult time.’
His parents, Zachary and Hilary, took to Facebook to express their sadness at their youngest son’s death.
‘Rest in peace our beautiful Carson,’ Zachary wrote. ‘It’s hard to imagine going on without you. Our hearts are broken.
‘The world is a better place because you were in it and we will forever cherish our time with you!’
It is not clear if the family, who are from Lehi, Utah, were at the cemetery to visit a particular tomb, but it is a historic site that attracts visitors.
The five-acre private, nonprofit cemetery was founded in 1885, Bruce Erikson, president of the Glenwood Cemetery Association, told the Tribune.
He said individual headstone maintenance was carried out by relatives of the deceased, and the stone that fell on the boy was ‘very likely’ historic.
‘I don’t know where the family is, or if they even exist anymore,’ he said of the stone’s owner.
The cemetery, which has 900 graves, is closed until Monday as police investigate what caused the headstone to fall.
