Jim Schwartz is trying to recreate in Detroit the defensive front he had with the Titans. He showed up on Kyle Vanden Bosch’s doorstep minutes after free agency opened and wooed the 31-year-old pash rusher. Schwartz saw up close how much Haynesworth and Vanden Bosch helped each other in Tennessee and how neither was as effective without the other. Vanden Bosch’s play has declined in the last two years (12 sacks in 2007, just three in 2009), but is a well-respected veteran who will be critical in establishing Schwartz’s system in Detroit, especially because the Lions are expected to take one of the top two defensive tackles – Gerald McCoy or Ndamukong Suh – with the second overall pick in the draft.
