Patrick Dean Lowrance

Authorities took a man into custody late Friday night who they identified as the suspect who was the subject of a huge manhunt earlier in the day after an officer was shot at in Greenville.

Authorities identified him as Patrick Dean Lowrance, 25, of Duncan.

He was being taken to a hospital with a wounded shoulder, Major Shea Smith of the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office said. No other details of the arrest were available late Friday night.

No warrants had been issued in connection with the manhunt, authorities said, and the man was arrested on outstanding warrants in earlier cases.

Lowrance was wanted by police on a number of charges before today’s incident, including the attempted armed robbery of a Wendy’s restaurant in Greenville, according to incident reports and warrants.

Earlier in the day, helicopters had circled Mauldin Road and K-9 units scoured the woods below for the suspect.

Ten schools were put on lockdown, and main thoroughfares were blocked off in a long stretch of Mauldin Road that seemed strange and empty. Sheriff’s deputies looked grim as they aimed assault rifles into the distance while dogs tracked a scent that weaved through trees and dense undergrowth.

They were looking for a man who Greenville Police Chief Terri Wilfong said ambushed an officer and opened fire in a breezeway of Berkley Pointe Apartments at 500 Wenwood Road. The officer wasn’t injured in the shooting, nor was anyone else.

The manhunt took place along the streets of one of Greenville’s affluent neighborhoods, with police officers camped out next to houses with impeccably manicured lawns in an area that many prominent Greenville figures call home.

The incident began when officers arrived at the apartment complex to track down the driver of a silver Yukon who fled when police tried to pull him over at approximately 9:40 a.m. for an improper tag on Laurens Road near Interstate 85, authorities said.

“It was only going to be a traffic violation, nothing more,” Wilfong said.

Shots were fired at officers, and one returned fire, according to the chief, who described it as “a gun battle.”

The man fled into the woods, launching an exhaustive manhunt that had the Highway Patrol, SWAT teams, SLED and other local authorities searching the apartment complex, nearby homes, underneath bridges and a wooded area that Wilfong said spans three miles.

Police said they believe the gunman was armed with an unknown amount of ammunition and weapons and posed a serious threat to the community.

“They’re alarmed, as they should be when you have somebody who tried to kill a police officer and now is running loose,” Wilfong said. “We have to be very very careful.”

Michael Rosemond was washing clothes at a laundromat on White Horse Road when news reports of a gunman on the run came on television. Fearing for his safety, Rosemond grabbed his still-wet laundry and tried to drive home but met a roadblock at Cavalier Drive.

“I was nervous,” he said while watching officers in bullet-proof vests across the street.

Reverse 9-1-1 was used to alert residents in the Mauldin Road and East Parkins Mill Road area to stay in their homes and lock their doors.

Among the schools that were put on lockdown were Sara Collins Elementary, the Washington Center, Christ Church Episcopal School, Greenville Technical College and St. Joseph’s Catholic School. The lockdown was lifted before 3 p.m.

By then, the search was focused on the wooded area. The hunt was hard on the dogs, which had to take breaks between treks across fallen trees and limbs. K-9 units later lost the scent at Interstate 85.

Investigators now believe the gunman was picked up in a vehicle under Interstate 85 between Mauldin Road and Pleasantburg Drive, said Greenville police spokeswoman Alia Urps.
