It’s being reported that Saturday, August 6 has become the deadliest single loss for American forces since the war started a decade ago. Insurgents shot down a U.S. military helicopter in Afghanistan, killing 30 Americans.

Many of the casualties in the early morning crash were members of the elite Navy SEALs unit that killed Osama bin Laden, but not one of the victims was part of the unit that killed bin Laden.

The U.S. led coalition said in a statement that 30 American service members, a civilian interpreter and seven Afghan commandos were killed when their CH-47 Chinook crashed. The helicopter was a twin-rotor Chinook, a large troop and cargo transporter.
Americans included 22 SEALs, three Air Force combat controllers, a dog handler and his dog.

“Their deaths are a reminder of the extraordinary sacrifices made by the men and women of our military and their families, including all who have served in Afghanistan,” President Barack Obama said in a statement, adding that his thoughts and prayers go out to the families of those who perished.

In one small Arkansas community, they’re mourning the loss of one of their own after a deadly helicopter crash in Afghanistan took the lives of 30 service men and women.

Siloam Springs native John Brown was one of the servicemen killed in the tragedy and those who knew him call him a true hero.

His friends call him a wonderful man devoted to his country and making the lives of the people around him better.

Brown grew up in Siloam Springs and graduated in 1996.

Friends remember him as outgoing, friendly, and a man who will be missed dearly. He was a member of the United States Air Force and was aboard the helicopter that killed him and 29 other servicemen yesterday.

John W. Brown was a Navy SEAL medic. Brown served 9-years and was recently promoted to tech sergeant.

Arkansas State Representative Jon Woods said, “My good friend John Brown class of 96′ Siloam Springs was on the helicopter that crashed this morning in Afghanistan. John’s mother (Elizabeth Newlun) emailed me this morning as soon as she heard. My heart goes out to his brothers Danny, Luke & his wife Tabitha. He is now in heaven looking down on us with our Lord.”

Natives of the northwestern town of Siloam Springs 15,000 people say Brown’s heroism will be remembered forever.

“I think it’s something that the state of Arkansas can be proud of to know that one of our finest, and he was one of our finest, has died for our country,” said Justin Harris, State Representative for District 87 and a friend of Brown’s.

Another Siloam Springs native Blue Rowe – was killed in Afghanistan in 2009.

Friends say they wouldn’t be surprised if the town starts a memorial for brown as well.

The government is still in the process of notifying family members of each of the 31 service men and women killed in the crash.

Brown was stationed at Pope Air Force Base in Pine Hearst, North Carolina where he and his wife lived.

Brown will be buried in the National Cemetery in Arlington, Texas.
