Condoleezza Rice has lived a life of firsts: first black woman to be Secretary of State, first black woman to be national security adviser and the first African-American, first woman and youngest person to be provost of Stanford University.

On Monday, she added another first when she became one of the first two female members admitted to Augusta National Golf Club, the home of the Masters tournament, which has excluded women as members throughout its 80-year history. The other new member is Darla Moore, a South Carolina financier and philanthropist who was on the cover of Fortune in 1997 as “The Toughest Babe in Business.”

For Rice, now a professor at the Graduate School of Business at Stanford, the membership reflects a competitiveness that she has brought to athletic and academic pursuits throughout her 57 years. A former competitive ice skater and a serious tennis player, Rice began golfing only seven years ago, on a vacation with family members to the Greenbrier, a resort in West Virginia. But she has thrown herself into the sport with her typical drive.

“I don’t like anything that’s ‘just an escape,’ ” Rice told Golf Digest in an interview last year. “To me, the best part of golf is that unlike my tennis game, I can actually get better. I’ve probably reached my plateau in tennis, but in golf, I have a lot of room for improvement. I really enjoy working on my game. I like practicing. I chart my rounds.”

Rice declined all interview requests Monday, but family and friends said she had played golf with far greater frequency since she left office as Secretary of State at the end of President George W. Bush’s administration in 2009.

“The bug bit her,” said Clara Rice, Rice’s stepmother, who lives near Rice in California.

In the Golf Digest interview, published in June 2011, Rice appeared accepting of Augusta’s policy at the time against female members, although she predicted the club would eventually change. (The club admitted its first African-American members in 1990.)

Asked if she thought that an influential, highly public club like Augusta had an obligation to set a better example by admitting women, Rice replied:

“No. I actually don’t. These are issues for the membership. I’ve got a lot of good friends at Augusta who are really good people. And it’s really up to them.

“Obviously, I don’t believe that you can have racial discrimination. That is something that is not only illegal but immoral. But there are women-only associations and men-only associations, and these are things that we need to leave to people to sort out. The face of America is changing, the face of golf is changing. All of this will change.”

In the same interview, Rice said she had shot 98 at Augusta when she played there in recent years but said her best score on any course was 87.

She said she had a 16.4 handicap and 2 coaches — Russ Vander Sluis at Stanford and Eric Eshleman in Birmingham, Ala., Rice’s hometown.

Coit D. Blacker, Rice’s friend and the director of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford, said that he visited Rice last weekend at her home in Pebble Beach, Calif., and that on Saturday, as he left to return to Stanford, Rice was headed out to play golf at Cypress Point Club. He had no idea, he said, that she was up for membership at Augusta.

“She didn’t mention it,” he said. “I’m sure she’s delighted.”
