Oak Grove assistant coach Brett Favre won his first game as a high school coach.

8/18/2012             5:19 PM

On Oak Grove‘s first offensive series of the season, the Warriors needed only 44 seconds to find paydirt.

And the play it came on was installed one week before by first-year offensive coordinator — and NFL legend —Brett Favre.

Quarterback Kirk McCarty took the snap, then pitched to quarterback Cameron Myers, who had been lined up in the slot. Myers, who transferred to Oak Grove from crosstown Hattiesburg High, pulled up behind the line of scrimmage and heaved a bomb down the field to a streaking Kelvin Winston.

Winston was all by his lonesome just in front of the end zone, and the rout was on. The Warriors trounced Sumrall 64-6 Friday at Warrior Field in the season opener for both teams.

Oak Grove coach Nevil Barr said when Favre approached him about adding the intricate wrinkle to the playbook, there was no hesitation at all.

“No, no, no,” Barr said. “I trust in my offensive coaches — unless it’s just something that’s way out there. Brett wanted to run it early in the game and it worked to perfection.”

Myers’ touchdown pass may have kick-started things, but McCarty put the game away for the Warriors.

After Sumrall’s DeVontae Watts scored on a 2-yard run with 4:34 left in the first quarter, the junior signal-caller took over.

With 10:13 left in the second quarter, McCarty found Logan Scott from 3 yards out to put the Warriors on top 14-6. Less than two minutes later, the left-handed quarterback scampered into the end zone for the first of three rushing touchdowns in a span of 6½ minutes.

McCarty credited his offensive line for making things seem easy.

“They blocked a heck of a game,” he said. “There’s no way to do it without those blocks and those holes that you could’ve driven a train through. We made a lot of blocks tonight that people don’t realize unless they watch the film.”

Oak Grove led 41-6 at halftime.

The Bobcats were overmatched in the trenches from the get-go. Sumrall’s offensive line allowed five sacks in the first half alone.

Sumrall coach Shannon White said he was just happy quarterback Will Simon didn’t get hurt.

“That’s the whole thing,” White said. “In this (spread) offense, if you can’t handle pressure, you get beat 64-6 by an average team, much less a great team. Oak Grove’s got a good football team.

“We were poorly prepared on my part. When things got bad, I thought we took it. We played like sissies.”

Sumrall lost last season’s opener against Oak Grove 52-0. White said he saw improvement in his team.

“Last year, we played good for four minutes. This year, we played good for eight minutes,” he said. “So after a year of work, we’re four minutes better. Maybe if we work 10 more years, we’ll get a half, who knows.”

McCarty finished 12-of-17 passing with 124 yards and a touchdown, while rushing six times for 74 yards. Ty Harris ran for 86 yards on four carries for Oak Grove, while Jordan Duncan had two catches for 46 yards and a touchdown.

Oak Grove welcomes Purvis to Warrior Field next week, while Sumrall travels to Poplarville. Kickoff for both games is set for 7:30 p.m.

If 40-year-old Brett Favre returns for a 20th NFL season, it will be perfectly legitimate for teammates to call him “Grandpa” around the locker room.

Favre confirmed to ESPN that his daughter, Brittany, has given birth to a son. The Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder had reported late last month that Brittany, 21, was expecting.

26-year-old Sterger, a former columnist for Sports Illustrated‘s web site who is no stranger to revealing photo shoots, says the legendary quarterback flirted with her when they were both employed by the New York Jets.

According to the article, Sterger claims that Favre, who has reportedly been texting teammates, ultimately texted her something quite different: numerous photos.

While the report lacks any hard evidence (so far), it would hardly be the first time Deadspin posted photographs of naked athletes.  Do you believe Sterger?

With the big breaking news out of the NFL today that Brett Favre has officially retired everyone awaits his announcement that he is coming out of retirement. Everyone but Tarvaris Jackson.

While Brett Favre did bring another dimension to the Vikings team he also brought chemistry and made the young guys believe in themselves, making sure they had the confidence they needed for when Favre was no longer there.

Now, reportedly Favre is no longer there and the fifth year quarterback out of Alabama State, Tarvaris Jackson, presumably takes over as the starter. In 33 career games Jackson has thrown for a total of 3,643 yards with 21 career touchdowns, 18 interceptions and 10 fumbles.

Those are not the most impressive numbers considering that Minnesota’s quarterback last season threw for 4,202 yards, 33 touchdowns, 7 interceptions and just 2 fumbles.

While Sage Rosenfels has been struggling in camp and recent trade rumors have swirled the Vikings went out and used a sixth round pick on a rookie quarterback Joe Webb who they believe could be a draft steal and their quarterback for the future.

So the ball is literally in Tarvaris Jackson’s hands to begin the season. With his backup not showing positive signs to the coaching staff, if Tarvaris Jackson begins to struggle don’t be surprised if you see a 6′4″ 220 pound rookie quarterback taking the field for the Vikings.

With all that being said, now the skill players such as wide receivers Sidney Rice, Percy Harvin, Bernard Berrian, tight end Visanthe Shiancoe, and, most importantly, franchise running back Adrian Peterson must step up. If the Vikings want to return to the glory road and make sure they don’t fall off with Brett gone, Adrian Peterson and Tarvaris Jackson will have to step up and play like they want to win.

He has already made as many retirement announcements as Super Bowl appearances and now it appears retirements could be taking an insurmountable 3-2 lead. Unless, of course, Favre changes his mind, which happens every now and then.

Favre, the future Hall of Famer, had one of his best seasons in his first year with the Vikings, but he will be 41 in October and had offseason surgery on his left ankle, an injury from the NFC title game loss to the Saints. It’s the third time that ankle has been repaired.

There were reports Tuesday that Favre has been texting Vikings players with the message that he is retiring, a surprising development because he played so well last year. But his ankle is apparently still a problem and the Vikings could be about to find out how the Packers felt after the 2007 season and the Jets felt after the 2008 season.

Or perhaps he won’t quit. That’s the problem with playing the annual Favre summer guessing game. You can be right today and wrong tomorrow.

If Favre, who as of Tuesday night had not commented on Tuesday’s reports, indeed is retiring, that means the Vikings-Jets game at the New Meadowlands Stadium on Oct. 11 loses its appeal.

“If he’s not playing Week 5, I’ll be happy as heck,” Rex Ryan said. “If he’s playing Week 5, I’ll be scared. Maybe not scared, but close. That guy is a tremendous player. Obviously, you love to see great players play. So I hope that if he’s still healthy, he plays. He makes the game exciting to watch.”

After each of his previous two retirements, he changed his mind. And with the Vikings’ opener in New Orleans on Sept. 9 still more than a month away, there is plenty of time for Favre to do it again. Or the Vikings can do it for him by offering a raise on the $13 million he is scheduled to make and by encouraging him to take as much time as he needs. One year ago, Favre didn’t join the Vikings until Aug.18.

Vikings coach Brad Childress said Tuesday he had not been told by Favre that he was retiring and he had talked to him within the previous 24 hours. He said he wouldn’t be surprised either way.

“I think all of us can live with it either way,” Childress said.

Favre spent one forgettable season with the Jets after he ended his first retirement and the Packers didn’t want him back and traded him to New York. Favre actually had the Jets at 8-3 and in prime position to make the playoffs, but they lost four out of their last five games with Favre throwing two touchdowns and nine interceptions.

He later said the decline was the result of a torn biceps tendon, which he subsequently had surgically fixed after he announced his retirement from the Jets in February of 2009. The Jets later released him and Favre signed with Minnesota, which is where he wanted to be all along.

His one year with the Jets has become a blur to his former teammates.

“It’s like a distant memory,” tackle Damien Woody said. “We talk about Favre like it was five years ago. So many aspects of our team have changed.”

Favre helped change the culture with the Jets by making it fun for the players despite Eric Mangini‘s rigid ways.

“Brett brought an energy,” Woody said. “Guys were having fun. He left his mark. Even though this is a grind, we can still have fun. When Rex came in, he emphasized it to a whole different degree. I definitely think Brett has something to do with that.”

If Favre retires, Tarvaris Jackson becomes the Vikings’ starting quarterback.

Kellen Clemens, who was No.2 on the depth chart behind Favre with the Jets in ’08, said he called him last week, but they never spoke about his football plans.

“Is he coming back here?” Clemens asked.

Now that would be an interesting way for him to end his career.

With the LeBron James decision wrapped up, get ready for news of Brett Favre‘s status to become a bigger story in the next few weeks.

Favre has yet to say if he will play for the Minnesota Vikings in 2010, though the surgery he had on his left foot in May and comments from those around the NFL all seem to indicate that he’ll return.

Favre will appear at the ESPYs on Wednesday night, where he will present the Arthur Ashe award.

Expect Favre to make some sort of statement about his playing status then. But, considering Favre’s history of vacillating, it is unlikely to be a definitive timeline of when he’ll return.

Favre: Not ready to decide yet

Favre wearily stepped his postgame podium Sunday night, bruises and cuts above his head, facing reporters after another season-ending interception.

He was asked if he was going to take a few months to decide his future.

“I wouldn’t say months, I know people are rolling their eyes or will roll their eyes,” Favre said.  “In a situation like this, I really don’t want to make a decision right now based solely on what’s happened.  Because I do know the year could have not gone any better aside from us not going to Miami.
