Howard Stern was tough on some of the contestants on the season premiere of "America's Got Talent." And the viewers seemed to crave it

May 14, 2012         11:45 pm

Howard Stern was tough on some of the contestants on Monday’s season premiere of “America’s Got Talent.” And the viewers seemed to crave it.

“I forgot how much I love Howard Stern,” tweeted @OptiMISS_Prime.

“Never was a fan of Howard Stern but gotta say I’m loving him on the show,” added @ShammyCW, expressing a point of view widely shared on Twitter.

Stern, the Sirius XM shock jock famed for his naughty ways, replaced Piers Morgan as the third judge on the show, which has for years been among summer’s top-rated programs. The other judges are Sharon Osbourne and Howie Mandel.

Before the premiere, speculation had centered on whether Stern’s R-rated sensibility — porn stars and flatulence are among his favorite obsessions — would fit with a prime-time broadcast talent show. Based on the initial reaction, viewers seem to think so.

On Monday’s show, Stern was sometimes surprisingly warm, at one point climbing onstage to dance with Simply Sergio, a singer whose wobbly audition was redeemed by an impromptu version of “God Bless America.” But he was also at times brutal. When one unfortunate contestant reported this his parents had passed away, Stern cracked: “Did they die of embarrassment?”

Not everyone is offering the thumbs-up, of course.

“Reading a pile of positive laudatory reviews of Howard Stern on America’s Got Talent tonight,” tweeted @mediageek. “Did we see the same show?”

But that was a minority opinion. Many viewers seemed to believe that NBC had succeeded in reinvigorating the show.

“Adding Howard Stern to #AGT seems to have been the best thing @NBC has done this year,” tweeted @TheJustinColman.

Howardstern4Story

December 15, 2011

It’s official. Howard Stern is going to become a judge on NBC’s singing competition “America’s Got Talent.” It may seem weird to announce this on the same day the Golden Globe nominations are unveiled, but after today Stern is on vacation until the New Year. As I’ve said before, I’m a big Stern fan but I’m wondering if the audience for “America’s Got Talent” will embrace him and whether his own audience will follow. But Stern, who is known for being crude, can also be a charmer and it could work out. He does love these shows. This being the 21st century, here’s the link to Stern’s Twitter announcement.

Star of the show: Anna Graceman wowed the judges with her rendition of Alicia Keys hit 'If I Ain't Got You'

8:39 AM on 22nd June 2011

Schoolgirl singer Anna Graceman wowed the
America’s Got Talent judges with her huge voice as she performed a stunning
rendition of an Alicia Keys song.

Cutting an unassuming figure amongst the other
bizarre and outlandish acts of the night, the youngster stunned the auditorium
with her astonishing voice.

The 11-year-old, who also played the keyboard,
won the hearts of the panel – and America – as she sang ‘If I Ain’t Got You’ at
the Atlanta auditions.

‘Decibels per inch, that is the loudest noise
anyone’s ever made on the show. You’ve got amazing promise,’ Piers Morgan told
the 4’3″ songstress.

‘It’s such a surprise that’s locked inside
this beautiful little girl,’ Howie Mandel said.

Sharon Osbourne added: ‘You’re this little
girl with amazing soul in your voice, which is something that can’t be learnt.
It’s an amazing gift that you have.’

The schoolgirl, who broke down in tears of
emotion backstage, then looked shocked as the judges asked her if she was ready
to be recognised on the street.

Anna was one of the acts voted through to the
next round of America’s Got Talent, which will see the contestants travel to
auditions in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Enraptured: The judges react to Anna's stunning performance

——————————————————————————————-

Anna Graceman is 11 years old.  She was born and raised in beautiful Southeast Alaska.  Her mother played classical music to her before she was born and after she was born her mother spent many hours singing, reading and playing music to her.  At just a few months old her parents started displaying flashcards for her to read and gain word association. All of this together sparked the love of music and words!

She started singing a melody of complete songs at 18 months.  She loved to sing! She would sing and sing until her parents would ask her to stop so they could get a little quite time.  By 2 years old she was not afraid to sing to large groups and left audiences stunned by her ability to perform well at such a young age.  At 4 years old she stopped just playing on the piano and she began truly playing the piano.  At this point she was playing chords and learning notes on the staff.  So I Cried is the first song she wrote.  She was only 6 years old and in the first grade.  She amazed many with her deep lyrics and knowledge of musical composition.  Since then she has continued to write many other songs both lyrical and instrumental – 35 of them have been released in various forms.

As a rule in her house there is no cable T.V. and other entertainment is limited, so when Anna is not playing her piano or singing she spends many hours reading and writing stories.  She loves to write mythical stories. She also enjoys swimming or riding her bike in the summer and skiing or sledding in the winter.  She is a great down hill skier!  She spends many hours practicing her music: singing, playing piano and writing.  She currently takes classical piano lessons and is learning how to play the guitar.  She loves her Big Baby Taylor!

She has a love of learning, encouraged through the Montessori program and wants to be a singer, song writer and story writer in the future.  Many thanks to her piano teachers, school teachers, school counselors, parents and other family members for their encouraging confidence in her that has and still motivates her success.

Anna Graceman loves her homeland Alaska.  She is moved by the beautiful and stunning scenery and devoted and friendly community.  Anna has a gift that she wants to share with all in hopes that through her music she can make a difference in this world; that she will encourage others, especially children, to find and nurture their gift and use those gifts for good on this earth.

Each letter of the first name rules 9 years of life.  Ages 0 to 27 are ruled by the sum of the first three letters of the name.

Anna Graceman

1 (A is the 1st letter of the alphabet) + 14 (n is the 14th letter of the alphabet) + 14 (n is the 14th letter of the alphabet) = 29

So from ages zero to twenty-seven she has the number 29 going on.

29 = Talent.  Talented.

Jackie Evancho. This is one of those weird children who sound like they’re 40 years old. She’s 10 and is an adorable, cute blonde. She’ll be popular. Luckily, she can back it up with an amazing voice. She sings “O Mio Babbino Caro,” which is no easy feat (I’ve sung it for competitions). I don’t like the way her voice shifts to the back of her throat sometimes. It’s prettier when it’s bright and brassy. Still, she’s very good. And not just for being 10. She’s good for anybody.

What a cutie. The judges love her, she gets a standing ovation. How has this girl not actually auditioned for this show? Why did they have to find her on YouTube?

Now, the reason this little girl (who sang an Italian aria) is different from the pianist is because she’s more interesting to watch and listen to. She just is. He may be the most talented person that performed tonight, but should he advance? Not sure.

Either way, she kind of saved the night, as Howie points out without really saying it. Do four acts advance out of this group? If it’s four, I pick Plutonic, Maestro Alexander Bui, Dan Sperry and Jackie Evancho — though I do think Pizza Pat is more Vegas than three of those four acts.

What did you think of YouTube night? And Jackie’s YouTube audition and tonight’s performance are below, if you’d like to watch.

You’ve got to listen to Jackie Evancho, 10, who stole the show last night on America’s Got Talent. And, yes, she’s being called “the next Susan Boyle.” One of the show’s YouTube acts (here’s her channel), Jackie, who is from the Pittsburgh area, is already booked to play Carnegie Hall on Dec. 2.

“I’m waiting for the lady to come out who was really singing that,” said host Nick Cannon. Seriously!
