A Costa Mesa man on Friday received a 20-year sentence and four months in prison for killing an Orange Coast College student and model in a drunk-driving crash on Valentine’s Day 2010.

Gustavo Adrian Vega, 24, was sentenced in Orange County Superior Court for killing Cara Lee, 20.

Vega had been convicted of murder, felony hit-and-run and felony possession of a controlled substance, cocaine, on June 30, according to court records.

According to prosecutors, Vega was driving drunk on Flower Street heading toward Sunflower Avenue about 2:30 a.m. Feb. 14, 2010, when he sped through a red light and his Toyota Tundra pickup crashed into a Toyota Corolla, killing Lee, who was working as a model.

Vega fled the scene and was later found by Costa Mesa police hiding in a nearby housing complex. He had a blood-alcohol content level of .17 — more than twice the legal limit — according to a news release from the Orange County district attorney’s office.

Lee was an only child and a cancer survivor who beat the disease when she was 17, according to the Daily Pilot.

Shannan M. Gilbert, 24 is missing. On the eve of May 01, 2010, she ran hysterically up to a resident’s home near the Oak Beach area in Long Island, NY and pounded on their door asking for help. The homeowner called 911 but Shannan took off running. Shortly after, the last known person that spoke with her was a 9-1-1 operator to whom Shannan was pleading that someone was chasing her and going to harm her. According to reports she named the person to the operator but law enforcement has not released that information. A lie detector test was given and the results inconclusive. She has never been seen since.

Shannon’s family is terribly worried and fear that harm may have come to Shannan. Due to the searches for Shannan by the police, they discovered 4 bodies all young women murdered by the “Long Island Serial Killer” on Gilgo Beach in Long Island, NY. The same area where Shannan was last heard from. Shortly thereafter, 6 more bodies was located only a few miles down the same pathway.

They ask if anyone has information about her whereabouts, please contact 1-800-577-TIPS

MISSING – Loving Daughter, Sister, Aunt, Friend – Shannan Maria Gilbert

About Shannan:

As news spreads about a possible serial killer on Long Island, one name has remained a missing person’s, and not a murder case.

Shannan Gilbert.

Gilbert went missing in May 2010, after something went wrong at a home she was visiting in a beach community on Long Island.

While many fear the worst, friends and family are not giving up. And they are committed to telling the story of a young woman who has made headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Shannan Maria Gilbert was born October 24, 1986. She has three sisters, a mother and an aunt. She last lived on Columbus Avenue in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Shannan graduated high school at age 16, and held dreams of being a singer and a songwriter.

She loved to cook, write poetry, and friends say, she was always there for them.

Gilbert worked as an escort, reportedly using Craig’s list to solicit business. That’s what brought her to Long Island the night she was last seen running from something terrifying.http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif

The search for Shannan Gilbert started it all, leading police to the remains of several missing women, but so far she not been listed among the victims.

Police in the Philippines investigating the fatal New Year’s Eve shooting of a local official did not have to look further than the last photograph he took. It led to the arrest of two suspects.

The picture, taken outside the man’s house in Manila, shows a man aiming his gun from behind the victim’s smiling three-member family, seconds before he was shot.

The relatives – Reynaldo Dagsa’s wife, daughter and mother-in-law – are seen standing beside the family car, which has its lights on, and the gunman, wearing a baseball cap, is bracing himself against the vehicle, pointing his gun at Dagsa. His face is slightly obscured by the gun. In the right-hand corner of the photograph is a man police identified as the assassin’s lookout.

The car was parked along an alley outside the Dagsas’ house.

Police said Dagsa was shot seconds after the photo was taken and died of wounds by the time he reached hospital. His family gave police the photo, which ran on the Philippine Daily Inquirer’s front page.

Caloocan city police chief, Jude Santos, said a man identified as the gunman in the picture was arrested yesterday. His accomplice was arrested in a separate raid in Manila the same day.

Santos said the main suspect was a car thief who was out on bail and likely sought revenge against Dagsa for ordering his arrest last year.

Dagsa’s wife and daughter told reporters he had asked them to wake him up before the stroke of midnight so he could join in the usually noisy New Year’s Eve street revelry that comes with lots of firecrackers.

The family members said they did not hear a gunshot because the firecrackers were exploding all around them. They only saw Dagsa falling to the ground after he was hit and they rushed him to hospital.

Bill Erwin, a character actor best known for playing an irascible old man on a “Seinfeld” episode, has died of natural causes aged 96.

He died December 29 in the Los Angeles suburb of Studio City, coincidentally near the old “Seinfeld” production lot. Erwin received an Emmy nomination for his turn as Sid Fields, an embittered man whom Jerry Seinfeld’s character volunteers to look after – but then loses – in an episode involving flying dentures, a giant goitre and a Senegalese housekeeper.

He also played Arthur the Bellman in the 1980 film “Somewhere in Time,” a time-traveling romantic drama starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. Erwin returned many times to the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Mich., the film’s setting, to participate in annual fan celebrations.

The Texas native had a long career on stage, working on Broadway and locally in southern California. Among his numerous TV commercials was a Dreyer’s Ice Cream spot in which he played an old man notified by his wife that “Dessert’s ready, it’s Dreyer’s Ice Cream.” That prompted Erwin’s chair-bound character to leap up and break dance.

He was also a self-taught cartoonist whose work was published in the New Yorker, Playboy and Los Angeles magazine. He is survived by four children and eight grandchildren.

Agathe von Trapp (second from left) rehearses with the Trapp Family Singers in 1946File:Agathevontrapp.jpg

Agathe von Trapp (second from left) is seen here rehearsing with the Trapp Family Singers in 1946

30 December 2010 Last updated at 07:21 ET

Agathe von Trapp, eldest daughter of the Austrian family who inspired The Sound of Music, has died at the age of 97 in the US state of Maryland.

She died in a hospice in the Baltimore suburb of Towson after suffering congestive heart failure in November, a long-time friend told reporters.

In the hit musical she was portrayed as Liesl, singing the duet Sixteen Going on Seventeen with Rolf.

While liking the film version, she felt her father came over as too strict.

“She cried when she first saw it because of the way they portrayed him,” said Mary Louise Kane, the friend who lived with Agathe von Trapp for half a century.

“She said that if it had been about another family she would have loved it.”

The 1959 Rodgers-Hammerstein musical, made into a film in 1965 with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, tells the story of a singing family who flee the Nazis across the Austrian Alps.

The original Trapp Family Singers performed in Europe and North America in the 1930s-40s with their father, Austrian naval Capt Georg Ritter von Trapp, and stepmother Maria.

Four of the Singers are still alive: Maria von Trapp, 96; Rosmarie von Trapp, 81; Eleonore “Lorli” von Trapp Campbell, 79; and Johannes, 71.

Johannes said his sister had been a private person who was also a talented sketch artist, the Associated Press news agency reported.

She will be buried in the spring at a cemetery at the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vermont, he added.

Geraldine Hoff Doyle

Wednesday, December 29, 2010; 11:30 PM

Geraldine Doyle, 86, who as a 17-year-old factory worker became the inspiration for a popular World War II recruitment poster that evoked female power and independence under the slogan “We Can Do It!,” died Dec. 26 at a hospice in Lansing, Mich.

Her daughter, Stephanie Gregg, said the cause of death was complications from severe arthritis.

For millions of Americans throughout the decades since World War II, the stunning brunette in the red and white polka-dot bandanna was Rosie the Riveter.

Rosie’s rolled-up sleeves and flexed right arm came to represent the newfound strength of the 18 million women who worked during the war and later made her a figure of the feminist movement.

But the woman in the patriotic poster was never named Rosie, nor was she a riveter. All along it was Mrs. Doyle, who after graduating from high school in Ann Arbor, Mich., took a job at a metal factory, her family said.

One day, a photographer representing United Press International came to her factory and captured Mrs. Doyle leaning over a piece of machinery and wearing a red and white polka-dot bandanna over her hair.

In early 1942, the Westinghouse Corp. commissioned artist J. Howard Miller to produce several morale-boosting posters to be displayed inside its buildings. The project was funded by the government as a way to motivate workers and perhaps recruit new ones for the war effort.

Smitten with the UPI photo, Miller reportedly was said to have decided to base one of his posters on the anonymous, slender metal worker – Mrs. Doyle.

For four decades, this fact escaped Mrs. Doyle, who shortly after the photo was taken left her job at the factory. She barely lasted two weeks.

A cellist, Mrs. Doyle was horrified to learn that a previous worker at the factory had badly injured her hands working at the machines. She found safer employment at a soda fountain and bookshop in Ann Arbor, where she wooed a young dental school student and later became his wife.

In 1984, Mrs. Doyle and her family came across an article in Modern Maturity magazine, a former AARP publication, that connected her UPI photo with Miller’s wartime poster.

The artist did take some liberties with Mrs. Doyle’s physique, her family said.

“She didn’t have those big muscles,” said her daughter Stephanie Gregg of Eaton Rapids, Mich. “She was busy playing cello.”

According to her family, the original photo of Mrs. Doyle was featured on the cover of the 1986 Time-Life book “The Patriotic Tide: 1940-1950.”

“You’re not supposed to have too much pride, but I can’t help have some in that poster,” Mrs. Doyle told the Lansing State Journal in 2002. “It’s just sad I didn’t know it was me sooner.”

Geraldine Hoff was born July 31, 1924 in Inkster, Mich., and grew up in Ann Arbor, where her father was an electrician.

Her husband of 66 years, Leo H. Doyle, died in February. A son, Gary Doyle, died in 1980.

In addition to her daughter Stephanie, survivors include four children, Jacqueline Drewes of Eaton Rapids, Mich., Brian Doyle of Holt, Mich., Deidre Doyle of Fort Myers, Fla., Lauretta Doyle of Hollandale, Wis.; a brother; a sister; 18 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

The “We Can Do It!” poster was scheduled to be displayed in Westinghouse facilities for only two weeks in February 1942. As time passed, however, it took on a whole new life.

In the early 1940s, Redd Evans and John Jacob Loeb composed the song “Rosie the Riveter.”

Simple lyrics helped the tune become a rotation staple on radio stations coast-to-coast: “All day long whether rain or shine, she’s part of the assembly line. She’s making history, working for victory, Rosie the Riveter.”

After the song had become popular, the May 29, 1943, edition of the Saturday Evening Post cover featured a Norman Rockwell illustration of a muscular, red-headed riveter with the name Rosie painted on her lunch pail.

From then on, many people began to associate the hardworking female factory employee with the name “Rosie,” and so the title stuck to Miller’s poster.

Several women claimed to be the “real” Rosie the Riveter, including Rose Monroe, an aircraft parts worker who appeared in a propaganda film promoting war bonds.

In the decades since the poster’s creation, the image has evolved into a pop culture reference that generated scores of imitations.

Based on Miller’s artwork, and Mrs. Doyle’s likeness, are “Rosie the Riveter” T-shirts, bags, aprons, costumes and figures.

In 1999, the U.S. Postal Service issued a stamp based on the”We Can Do It!” poster.

For years, Mrs. Doyle made appearances in Michigan to sign posters, until her arthritis made her dependent on a wheelchair and unable to write.

While many people profited off the “Rosie the Riveter” image, Mrs. Doyle often said she never made a penny from it because she was too busy tending to her family and “changing diapers all the time.”
