Two young sisters are dead and their father and brother are clinging to life following a collision between their van -- seen here -- and a freight train in Lakeshore, Ont. on Sunday.

June 10, 2012            12:39 PM ET

An Ontario family has lost two of its young members after the van they were riding was struck by a Canadian Pacific Railway freight train east of Windsor on Sunday.

Wynter Williams, 6, and her sister Brooklyn, 3, were killed in the crash, Ontario Provincial Police said, adding the van was hit just before 10 a.m. local time at a level crossing on Strong Road just north of County Road 42, outside the town of Lakeshore.

Their brother, Dryden, 4, has been transferred to hospital in Detroit, Mich., with life-threatening injuries and their father, Andrew Williams, is fighting for his life in a Windsor hospital. The youngest child, Jasmyn, 18 months, suffered only minor injuries in the collision.

As of Monday morning, Dryden remained in critical condition at Detroit Children’s Hospital, according to a hospital spokesperson.

The family is from Lakeshore, near Windsor.

Crossing has no flashing lights

Const. Stephanie Moniz said the crossing doesn’t have many safeguards.

“There’s no monitoring at this intersection,” she said. “There’s no bar that comes down; there’s no flashing lights. It’s simply a sign with the railway X on it along with a warning sign that says ‘stop before’ or ‘check both ways before crossing,”‘ she said

The Canadian Pacific train had two crew members on board at the time of the collision, the CBC’s Asha Tomlinson reported. Neither was injured. The two have been relieved of duty and offered critical stress counselling.

A CP official told CBC News the crew members applied the emergency brake and sounded the train’s whistle before the collision.

OPP investigators and CP police are investigating the crash, which occurred while visibility was good.
