The community of Grande Prairie, Alta., faces another tough day on Saturday as it marks one week since four of its teens were killed in a highway crash with a driver who is alleged to have been drunk.

All four boys were members of the Warriors football team at Grande Prairie Composite High School, and after a week of mourning, the squad was set to return to the field Saturday morning for its first game since losing them.

“It’s hard to look at the football team in the eyes. There’s nothing there. They’re empty,” said Shelley Judd, whose 15-year-old nephew Zachary survived the crash but is in a medically induced coma 400 kilometres away at an Edmonton hospital.

Sixteen-year-olds Matthew Deller and Vincent Stover and 15-year-olds Walter Borden-Wilkins and Tanner Hildebrand lost their lives last Saturday when their car was struck by a GMC pickup truck as they were driving home from a party just after midnight.

The boys’ funerals on Thursday and Friday were attended by hundreds of family and friends, many of whom wore the orange colours of the Warriors football team.

Thousands of people are expected to turn out for Saturday’s playoff game, at which the teens will be honoured.

3,000 T-shirts

Tyrone Pike volunteered time all week making T-shirts for the game to raise money. The shirts, orange with a large W in the middle for the football team’s name, sell for $10.

Two of the boys' funerals were Thursday and two, including this service for 16-year-old Vincent Stover, were Friday.

“We are working around the clock non-stop. We’ve printed 1,500 T-shirts so far, and we’re looking at printing another 1,500 here,” he said earlier in the week.

“We’ve asked a couple of local businesses to donate some money to help us front the cost of the T-shirts, and then whatever’s left over is going towards the foundation and being split up between the families of the boys that were in the accident.”

The city will hold another public memorial on Sunday.

A 21-year-old Grande Prairie man, Brenden Holubowich, is charged with 11 counts related to the collision, including impaired driving causing death and failure to remain at the scene. He was released on bail and has a court date Monday at the Grande Prairie provincial courthouse.
