Edgar Cayce (1877-1945) has been called the “sleeping prophet,” the “father of holistic medicine,” and the most documented psychic of the 20th century. For more than 40 years of his adult life, Cayce gave psychic “readings” to thousands of seekers while in an unconscious state, diagnosing illnesses and revealing lives lived in the past and prophecies yet to come. But who, exactly, was Edgar Cayce?

Cayce was born on a farm in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, in 1877, and his psychic abilities began to appear as early as his childhood. He was able to see and talk to his late grandfather’s spirit, and often played with “imaginary friends” whom he said were spirits on the other side. He also displayed an uncanny ability to memorize the pages of a book simply by sleeping on it. These gifts labeled the young Cayce as strange, but all Cayce really wanted was to help others, especially children.

Later in life, Cayce would find that he had the ability to put himself into a sleep-like state by lying down on a couch, closing his eyes, and folding his hands over his stomach. In this state of relaxation and meditation, he was able to place his mind in contact with all time and space — the universal consciousness, also known as the super-conscious mind. From there, he could respond to questions as broad as, “What are the secrets of the universe?” and “What is my purpose in life?” to as specific as, “What can I do to help my arthritis?” and “How were the pyramids of Egypt built? His responses to these questions came to be called “readings,” and their insights offer practical help and advice to individuals even today.

Many people are surprised to learn that Edgar Cayce was a devoted churchgoer and Sunday school teacher. At a young age, Cayce vowed to read the Bible for every year of his life, and at the time of his death in 1945, he had accomplished this task. Perhaps the readings said it best, when asked how to become psychic, Cayce’s advice was to become more spiritual.

Although Cayce died more than 60 years ago, the timeliness of the material in the readings — with subjects like how to discovering your mission in life, developing your intuition, exploring ancient mysteries, and taking responsibility for your health — is evidenced by the hundreds of books that have been written on the various aspects of this work as well as the dozen or so titles focusing on Cayce’s life itself. Together, these books contain information so valuable that even Edgar Cayce himself might have hesitated to predict their impact on the contemporary world. In 1945, the year of his passing, who could have known that terms such as “meditation,” “Akashic records,” “spiritual growth,” “auras,” “soul mates,” and “holistic health” would become household words to millions?

The majority of Edgar Cayce’s readings deal with holistic health and the treatment of illness. As it was at the time Cayce was giving readings, still today, individuals from all walks of life and belief receive physical relief from illnesses or ailments through information given in the readings — some readings were given as far back as 100 years ago! Yet, although best known for this material, the sleeping Cayce did not seem to be limited to concerns about the physical body. In fact, in their entirety, the readings discuss an astonishing 10,000 different topics. This vast array of subject matter can be narrowed down into a smaller group of topics that, when compiled together, deal with the following five categories: (1) Health-Related Information; (2) Philosophy and Reincarnation; (3) Dreams and Dream Interpretation; (4) ESP and Psychic Phenomena; and (5) Spiritual Growth, Meditation, and Prayer.

Edgar Cayce was an American who claimed to be a psychic. He had demonstrated an ability to channel answers to questions on subjects such as health or Atlantis, while in a self-induced trance. Though Cayce considered himself a devout Christian and lived before the emergence of the New Age Movement, some believe he was the founder of the movement and had influence on its teachings.

Cayce became a celebrity toward the end of his life and the publicity given to his prophecies has overshadowed what to him were usually considered the more important parts of his work, such as healing (the vast majority of his readings were given for people who were sick) and theology (Cayce was a lifelong, devout member of the Disciples of Christ). Skeptics challenge the statement that Cayce demonstrated psychic abilities, and traditional Christians also question his unorthodox answers on religious matters (such as reincarnation and Akashic records).

1877 to 1920—the Kentucky period

In December 1893, the Cayce family moved to Hopkinsville, Kentucky and occupied 705 West Seventh, on the south-east corner of Seventh and Young Street. During this time, Cayce received an eighth-grade education; discovered his spiritual vocation; left the family farm to pursue various forms of employment (at Richard’s Dry Goods Store and then in Hopper’s Bookstore, both located on Main Street).

Cayce’s education stopped with the ninth grade because his family could not afford the costs involved. A ninth-grade education was often considered more than sufficient for working-class children. Much of the remainder of Cayce’s younger years would be characterized by a search for both employment and money.

Throughout his life, Cayce was drawn to church as a member of the Disciples of Christ. He read the Bible once for every year of his life, taught at Sunday school, and recruited missionaries, and he is said to have agonized over the issue of whether his supposed psychic abilities—and the teachings which resulted—were spiritually legitimate.

In 1900, he formed a business partnership with his father to sell Woodmen of the World Insurance but was struck by severe laryngitis in March that resulted in a complete loss of speech. Unable to work, he lived at home with his parents for almost a year. He then decided to take up the trade of photography, an occupation that would exert less strain on his voice. He began an apprenticeship at the photography studio of W.R. Bowles in Hopkinsville.

A traveling stage hypnotist and entertainer called “Hart—The Laugh Man” was performing at the Hopkinsville Opera House in 1901. He heard about Cayce’s condition and offered to attempt a cure. Cayce accepted, and the experiment took place on stage in front of an audience. Remarkably, Cayce’s voice apparently returned while in a hypnotic trance but allegedly disappeared on awakening. Hart tried a posthypnotic suggestion that the voice would continue to function after the trance, but this proved unsuccessful.

Since Hart had appointments at other cities, he could not continue his hypnotic treatment of Cayce. However, a local hypnotist, Al Layne, offered to help Cayce in restoring his voice. Layne suggested that Cayce describe the nature of his condition and cure while in a hypnotic trance. Cayce described his own ailment from a first person plural point of view (“we”) instead of the singular (“I”). In subsequent readings he would generally start off with “We have the body.” According to the reading, his voice loss was due to psychological paralysis and could be corrected by increasing the blood flow to the voice box. Layne suggested that the blood flow be increased, and Cayce’s face supposedly became flushed with blood and his chest area and the throat turned bright red. After 20 minutes Cayce, still in trance, declared the treatment over. On awakening, his voice was alleged to have remained normal. Relapses were said to have occurred but were said to have been corrected by Layne in the same way, and eventually the cure was said to be permanent.

Layne had read of similar hypnotic cures effected by the Marquis de Puységur, a follower of Franz Mesmer, and was keen to explore the limits of the healing knowledge of the trance voice. He asked Cayce to describe Layne’s own ailments and suggest cures and reportedly found the results both accurate and effective. Layne suggested that Cayce offer his trance healing to the public, but Cayce was reluctant. He finally agreed on the condition that readings would be free. He began with Layne’s help to offer free treatments to the townspeople. As his success and fame spread, he became known as “The Miracle Worker of Virginia Beach.” Reports of Cayce’s work appeared in the newspapers, inspiring many postal inquiries. Cayce was able to work just as effectively using a letter from the individual as with having the person present. Given the person’s name and location, he said he could diagnose the physical and/or mental conditions and provide a remedy. He became popular and soon people from around the world sought his advice through correspondence.

Cayce’s work grew in volume as his fame grew. He asked for voluntary donations to support himself and his family so that he could practice full time. He continued to work in an apparent trance state with a hypnotist all his life. His wife and eldest son later replaced Layne in this role. A secretary, Gladys Davis, recorded his readings in shorthand.

1920 to 1923—the Texas period

The growing fame of Cayce coupled with the popularity he received from newspapers attracted several eager commercially minded men who wanted to seek a fortune by using Cayce’s clairvoyant abilities. Even though Cayce was reluctant to help them, he was persuaded to give the readings, which left him dissatisfied with himself and unsuccessful. A cotton merchant offered Cayce a hundred dollars a day for his readings about the daily outcomes in the cotton market. However, despite his poor finances, Cayce refused the merchant’s offer. Others wanted to know where to hunt for treasures; some wanted to know the outcome of horse races. Several times he was persuaded to give the readings as an experiment. However, he was not successful when he used his ability for such purposes, doing no better than chance alone would dictate. These experiments allegedly left him depleted of energy, distraught, and unsatisfied with himself. Finally, he came to the conclusion that he would use his gift only to help the distressed and sick.

He was persuaded to give readings on philosophical subjects in 1923 by Arthur Lammers, a wealthy printer who, by his own admission, had been “studying metaphysics for years”. While in his supposed trance state, Cayce was told by Lammers that he spoke of Lammer’s past lives and of reincarnation, something Lammers believed in, which was a popular subject of the day but not an accepted part of Christian doctrine. Cayce questioned his stenographer as to what he had said in his trance state and remained unconvinced. Cayce himself challenged Lammers’s charge that he had validated astrology and reincarnation in the following dialog:

Cayce “I said all that?…I couldn’t have said all that in one reading.” “No,” Lammers said; “but you confirmed it. You see, I have been studying metaphysics for years, and I was able by a few questions, by the facts you gave, to check what is right and what is wrong with a whole lot of the stuff I’ve been reading. The important thing is that the basic system which runs through all the mystery religions, whether they come from Tibet or the pyramids of Egypt, is backed up by you. It’s actually the right system.”  Cayce’s stenographer recorded the following:

“In this we see the plan of development of those individuals set upon this plane, meaning the ability to enter again into the presence of the Creator and become a full part of that creation.
Insofar as this entity is concerned, this is the third appearance on this plane, and before this one, as the monk. We see glimpses in the life of the entity now as were shown in the monk, in this mode of living.
The body is only the vehicle ever of that spirit and soul that waft through all times and ever remain the same.”

Cayce was quite unconvinced (that he had been referring to and, as such, had validated the doctrine of reincarnation), and the best Lammers could offer was that the reading “opens up the door” and went on to share his beliefs and knowledge of the “truth” with Cayce.  It appeared Cayce’s instincts were telling him this was no ordinary reading. This client who came for a reading came with quite a bit of information of his own to share with Cayce and seemed intent upon convincing Cayce, now that he felt the reading had confirmed his strongly held beliefs. It should be noted, however, that 12 years earlier Cayce had briefly alluded to reincarnation. In reading 4841-1, given April 22, 1911, Cayce referred to the soul being “transmigrated.” Because, as noted below, there are several thousand missing Cayce readings from the period up to 1923, it is possible that he may have also mentioned reincarnation in other readings as well.

Cayce reported that his conscience bothered him severely over this conflict. Lammers overwhelmed, manipulated, confused, reassured and argued with Cayce. Ultimately his “trance voice,” the “we” of the readings, also supposedly dialogued with Cayce and finally persuaded him to continue with these kinds of readings. In 1925 Cayce reported that his “voice” had instructed him to move to Virginia Beach, Virginia.

1925 to 1945—the Virginia Beach period

Cayce’s mature period, in which he created the several institutions which would survive him in some form, can be considered to have started in 1925. By this time he was a professional psychic with a small staff of employees and volunteers. The “readings” increasingly came to involve occult or esoteric themes.

Cayce gained national prominence in 1943 through a high-profile article in Coronet titled “Miracle Man of Virginia Beach”. He said he couldn’t refuse people who felt they needed his help, and he increased the frequency of his readings to eight per day to try to make an impression on the ever-growing pile of requests. He said this took a toll on his health as it was emotionally draining and often fatigued him. He even went so far as to say that the readings themselves scolded him for attempting too much and that he should limit his workload to just two readings a day or else they would kill him.

Edgar Cayce suffered from a stroke and died on January 3, 1945. He is buried in Riverside Cemetery in Hopkinsville, Kentucky.

Claimed psychic abilities

Edgar Cayce has variously been referred to as a “prophet” (cf. Jess Stearn‘s book, The Sleeping Prophet), a “mystic“, a “seer”, and a “clairvoyant“.

Cayce’s methods involved lying down and entering into what appeared to be a trance or sleep state, usually at the request of a subject who was seeking help with health or other personal problems (subjects were not usually present). The subject’s questions would then be given to Cayce, and Cayce would proceed with a reading. At first these readings dealt primarily with the physical health of the individual (physical readings); later readings on past lives, business advice, dream interpretation, and mental or spiritual health were also given.

Until September 1923, they were not systematically preserved. However, an October 10, 1922, Birmingham (Alabama) Age-Herald article quotes Cayce as saying that he had given 8,056 readings as of that date, and it is known that he gave approximately 13,000-14,000 readings after that date. Today, only about 14,000 are available at Cayce headquarters and on-line. Thus, it appears that about 7,000-8,000 Cayce readings are missing.

When out of the trance he entered to perform a reading, Cayce said he generally did not remember what he had said during the reading. The unconscious mind, according to Cayce, has access to information which the conscious mind does not — a common assumption about hypnosis in Cayce’s time. After Gladys Davis became Cayce’s secretary on September 10, 1923, all readings were preserved and his wife Gertrude Evans Cayce generally conducted (guided) the readings.

Cayce said that his trance statements should be taken into account only to the extent that they led to a better life for the recipient. Moreover, he invited his audience to test his suggestions rather than accept them on faith.

Other abilities that have been attributed to Cayce include astral projection, prophesying, mediumship, viewing the Akashic Records or “Book of Life“, and seeing auras. Cayce said he became interested in learning more about these subjects after he was informed about the content of his readings, which he reported that he never actually heard himself.

The health readings are most numerous, and they involve many alternative health concepts and practices. Cayce described his work in terms of Christian service. People with esoteric interests have focused on a somewhat different set of topics.

  • Origin and destiny of humanity: “All souls were created in the beginning, and are finding their way back to whence they came.” [Reading 3744-5] The Cayce readings could be interpreted as saying that human souls were created with a consciousness of their oneness with God. Some “fell” from this state; others—led by the Jesus soul—volunteered to save them. The Earth, with all its limitations, was created as a suitable arena for spiritual growth. It could also be interpreted as saying that all beings are born and all will eventually die.
  • Reincarnation: Cayce’s work teaches the reality of reincarnation and karma, but as instruments of a loving God rather than blind natural laws. Its purpose is to teach us certain spiritual lessons. Animals have undifferentiated, “group” souls rather than individuality and consciousness. Humans have never been incarnated as animals. He describes a very complex design arranged between souls and God to “meet the needs of existing conditions”, which was a reference to the souls who became entrapped in the Earth’s physical materiality, which was not intended for a habitat of the soul. In There Is A River, a biography about Cayce by Thomas Sugrue, we are told by Sugrue that spirit “thought-forms” stayed near and guided the anthropoid ape which was chosen to be the most ideal vehicle for the human physical race to be created from, and psychically guided their separate evolution into a Homo sapiens species. This contradicts Cayce’s view. In reading (3744-5), Cayce states “Man DID NOT descend from the monkey, but man has evolved, resuscitation, you see, from time to time, time to time, here a little, there a little, line upon line and line and line upon line.” Cayce’s view arguably incorporates and parallels Theosophical teachings on spiritual evolution.
  • Astrology: Cayce accepts astrology on the basis that our souls spend time on other planets (or perhaps their spiritual counterparts) in between incarnations. The position of the planets at our birth records these influences.
  • Universal laws: Souls incarnated on the Earth are subject to certain spiritual laws such as, “As ye sow, so shall ye reap” (karma) or “As ye judge (others), so shall ye be judged.” Properly regarded, such laws represent an aspect of God’s mercy whereby no matter what our circumstances, He has promised to guide us in our spiritual path. Cayce said that when you view it from the highest dimension, there is no time and no space, nor any future or past, and that it is all happening in one fascinating expression and that time is an illusion that has purpose.
  • Unknown Life of Jesus: Cayce presented narratives of Jesus’ previous incarnations, including a mysterious Atlantean figure called “Amilius” as well as the more familiar biblical figures of Adam, Enoch, Melchizedek, Joshua, Asaph, and Jeshua. Cayce describes Jesus as an Essene who traveled to India in his youth in order to study Eastern religions, more specifically astrology.
    • Jesus and Christ: Following New Thought precedent, Cayce distinguishes between Jesus and Christhood. Briefly, Jesus was a soul like us who reincarnated through many lifetimes. “Christhood” is something he was the first to allow to be “manifest” through his material life, and it is something which we also ought to aspire towards. Cayce accordingly calls Jesus our “elder brother” and frequently makes reference to the way of the “lowly Nazarene.”
  • Ideals: Cayce repeatedly stresses the choice of an ideal as the foundation of the spiritual path. “And O that all would realize… that what we are… is the result of what we have done about the ideals we have set” (1549-1). We may choose any ideal we feel drawn to. As we attempt to apply it in our lives, God will guide us further, perhaps inspiring us to revise our choice of ideal. The highest ideal, says Cayce, is Christ; however, the readings recognize “the Christ spirit” in some form as the basis for religions other than Christianity.
  • Body, Mind, Spirit: Cayce often invokes these three terms, or their equivalents, to describe the human condition. “Spirit is the life. Mind is the builder. Physical is the result.” (conflation of various readings). The concept has application not only to holistic health but also to the spiritual life.
  • Meditation: While Cayce sometimes described particular meditation techniques of sitting or chanting “Arrr–eee-oommm” the crucial element, he believed, is that of opening up to divine influences. The Search For God books say that “Through prayer we speak to God. In meditation, God speaks to us.” Cayce’s concept of meditation has some aspects in common with Hinduism or Buddhism (the chakras, kundalini) but is most similar to Christian versions of New Thought. The symbolism of the Book of Revelation, he says, is based on meditative experiences.
  • Extra-sensory perception: Cayce accepted psychic experiences and ESP as a natural by-product of soul growth. God may speak to us through dreams (many readings consist of dream interpretation), or through intuitions similar to the pangs of conscience. However, Cayce did not endorse Spiritualism or mediumship on the grounds that supposed entities thus contacted are not necessarily particularly lofty. Instead, he encouraged seekers to focus on Christ.
  • Atlantis: The Cayce readings spoke of the existence of Atlantis, a legendary continent with an advanced technology whose refugees peopled ancient Egypt as well as pre-Columbian America. Cayce’s description of Atlantis has much in common with that of Ignatius L. Donnelly. According to Cayce, Atlantean society was divided into two long-lived political factions—a “good” faction called the “Sons of the Law of One,” and an “evil” faction called the “Sons of Belial.” Many people alive today are the reincarnations of Atlantean souls, he believed, who must now face similar temptations as before. It is said Atlantis suffered three major destructions, one of which was the deluge. According to the readings, a major source of turmoil was the Sons of Belial’s desire to exploit the Things, sub-humans with animal appendages and low intelligence, and the movements to protect and evolve them by the Sons of the Law of One. The final destruction was the overcharging of the crystal which caused a massive explosion.
  • Egypt: Next to biblical times, the most significant era for the “life readings” was a pre-dynastic Egyptian civilization consisting of Atlantean refugees. Cayce purported to have been an Egyptian priest named “Ra Ta” who built a spiritually-based healing center (the “Temple of Sacrifice”) and educational institution (the “Temple Beautiful”). His diagnostic readings and narratives about the past and future were supposed to be a continuation of his ancient work. This civilization also built monuments on the Giza plateau, including the Great Pyramid, and left records of Atlantis in a “hall of records” located somewhere beneath the Great Sphinx of Giza. These readings bear a close resemblance to books by AMORC founder H. Spencer Lewis.
  • Earth Changes: Cayce coined the term Earth Changes (later widely used in New Age writings), a reference to a series of cataclysm events which he prophesied would take place in future decades — notably including the Earth shifting on its axis, and most of California dropping into the Pacific Ocean following a catastrophic earthquake.
  • Cayce “cures”: Cayce’s medical readings typically prescribe poultices (often of castor oil), osteopathic adjustments, colonic irrigation, massage (often with peanut oil), prayer, folk remedies (e.g. charcoal tablets), various forms of electric medicine and patent medicines (such as Atomidine), and specific recommendations concerning diet and exercise. Cayce is often seen as a practitioner of holistic medicine, and has particularly strong philosophical ties with naturopathy.
  • “Cayce diet”: Major dietary recommendations include the avoidance of red meat, alcohol (except red wine), white bread, and fried foods; a preference for fruits and above-ground, leafy vegetables over starches; and a high ratio (80:20%) of alkaline foods over acidic. One meal per day should consist entirely of raw vegetables. Under strict circumstances, Cayce advocated both coffee and pure tobacco cigarettes to be non-harmful to health. “Food combining” was also a central idea in the Cayce diet. According to Cayce, several food combinations that are contraindicated are coffee with milk or sugar, citrus fruit with starchy foods, and high protein foods with starches. Cayce himself followed very few of the dietary recommendations that were suggested by the readings. According to Cayce, two or three almonds (see Amygdalin) a day keeps cancer away.
  • Dream interpretation: Cayce was one of the early dream interpreters who contradicted Freudian views by saying that dreams can be of many different kinds (including sexual) with many levels of meaning; that lack of interest is the reason for poor dream recall; that only the dreamer knows the meaning of his dream; and that a dream is correctly interpreted when it makes sense to the dreamer, when it checks out with his other dreams, and when it moves him forward in his life.

American mystic known as “The Sleeping Prophet.” While in a sleep state he could discuss history, geology, metaphysics, philosophy and medicine. He gave approximately 30,000 life-readings and medical diagnosis to people during his lifetime. He founded a hospital, a university and the A.R.E. (Association for Research and Enlightenment) in Virginia Beach, Virginia that promotes research on his readings and continues his work.

Edgar Cayce was born to uneducated farming parents. He attended country school only as far as the eighth grade. As a child he had a strong desire to become a preacher, which he never formally realized. He prayed to be able to help others, especially children, and had a spiritual vision in 1890, at age 13, that told him he would be able to accomplish this dream of service. A lady bathed in light told Cayce to sleep with his head on his books, and then he would be able to remember what was in them. This was at a time when he was having trouble in school, and his father was apparently beating him for not being able to spell the words in his lessons correctly. Soon after, he showed signs of special abilities when he found that he could sleep on his school books and have photographic recall of every page, and he seems to have continued using this

ability throughout his early life– such as when he got a job at an office supply and book store after having first been turned away, by demonstrating to the owners that he was more familiar with their catalog and inventory than they were.

On 3/16/1886 Cayce had his first vision. Two years later he was pronounced dead from drowning, but recovered. In 1900 he developed a severe case of laryngitis that doctors couldn’t cure. In desperation he tried hypnosis from a traveling practitioner and was cured after several treatments. Under hypnosis, he gave his first psychic reading on 3/31/1901 and learned that he could give accurate medical diagnoses and healing recommendations for himself and for other people. Requests for his readings increased by word-of-mouth.

Cayce married Gertrude Evans, his first serious girlfriend, after eight years of courtship on 6/17/1903. Their first child, son Hugh Lynn, was born on 3/16/1907 and his second son, Milton Porter, was born in 3/28/1911 and died 5/17/1911. Gertrude, weakened with grief, became ill with tuberculosis, and was cured by following the recommendations in her husband’s readings for her. Hugh Lynn’s eye was severely burned in an accident with photo flash powder in Cayce’s studio. Readings for him proved successful as well. On 2/08/1918 his third son, Edgar Evans, was born.

Two tragic fires plagued his photographic work; one occurred on 12/23/1906 and destroyed his studio and many paintings and works of art he had at the studio for a show and the other destroyed his new studio in September 1907.

By 1910, Cayce was receiving a great deal of publicity, particularly as a result of a New York Times article. He began giving readings in Hopkinsville as a “psychic diagnostician.” At the same time, he operated his own photographic studio to support his family. The work with the readings progressed to the point where a full-time secretary was needed to record and transcribe the readings. Gladys Davis was hired in 1923 to perform that function. The family, with Gladys, moved to Dayton, Ohio later that year and Cayce began giving readings on a full-time basis. He established the Cayce Psychic Institute and began to give his first life readings, citing information on past lives of the inquirers, and other metaphysical topics in addition to the health readings.

In 1924, Cayce met a wealthy New York stockbroker who agreed to fund his work. They planned a national organization that would be called the Association of National Investigators. The readings recommended that the organization be located in Virginia Beach where a hospital was to be built, so the family moved there. The dream of the hospital was realized with its opening in 1927. Atlantic University opened in 1930 to study the readings and provide a college education. Hard times hit when funding was withdrawn and the hospital closed in February 1931. The Association of National Investigators disbanded that same year. Cayce was distraught, but a group of loyal supporters urged him to for a new organization, called the Association for Research and Enlightenment (A.R.E.), in Virginia Beach.

Cayce, his wife Gertrude and secretary Gladys Davis were arrested on charges of fortune-telling during a visit to New York in 1931, but the charges were dismissed. Four years later, Cayce, his son Hugh Lynn, and his stenographer were arrested in Detroit for practicing medicine without a license as a result of giving a reading for a sick child. Edgar was convicted and freed on probation.

More publicity came in 1943 with the publication of the Cayce biography, “There is a River” by Thomas Sugrue, and a Coronet magazine article, “Miracle Man of Virginia Beach.” Heavy mail requests for readings deluged the A.R.E. Cayce struggled to keep up with the workload, giving many more readings than usual each day, against the advice of his own readings. His last reading of over 30,000 was given on 9/17/1944. He suffered a stroke and final illness and died on 1/03/1945 at 7:15 PM EWT in Virginia Beach. A few hours before dying, he roused from his sleep and said, “How much the world needs God today.” His wife, Gertrude, died three months later on Easter Sunday, 4/01/1945, at sunrise. His mother died 25/10/1926; father died 11/04/1937.

Throughout his life, Cayce claimed no special abilities and did not capitalize financially or otherwise on his gifts. The readings never offered a set of beliefs or “religion” to be embraced, but instead focused on the idea that every person should test in his or her own life the principles presented. Though Cayce was a devout Christian who read the Bible through once for every year of his life, his work emphasized the importance of comparative study of belief systems from around the world. In fact, some of the metaphysical material that came through the sleeping Cayce was at first confusing and distressing to him in his waking state. However, he overcame his doubts, as have others, by observing the amazing accuracy and unfailing helpfulness of the readings in other areas, such as healing. For some, the Christian language of the readings is at first an obstacle. Yet, the underlying principle of the readings is the oneness of all life, acceptance of all people, and a compassion and understanding for every major religion in the world.

Asiana Flight 214 crash landed at San Francisco International Airport in San Francisco on July 6, 2013.

6:09 p.m. EDT           July 6, 2013

An Asiana Airlines flight from Seoul crashed on landing at San Francisco’s airport Saturday, forcing passengers to escape the aircraft using inflatable emergency exit slides. Two people were reported killed and 61 injured.

Images from the scene showed smoke billowing from the plane and emergency exits open from the plane’s fuselage, with the tail separated from the aircraft. Gaping holes could be seen in the roof of the plane’s body, blackened by fire.

San Francisco Fire Department officials said two passengers were killed and 61 injured, KTVU reported.

The plane was a Boeing 777, FAA spokesman Lynn Lunsford said. It crashed on runway 28L at San Francisco International Airport, he said.

There were 291 people aboard, KCBS radio reported. The San Francisco airport was closed, and incoming flights were diverted to other airports.

The National Transportation Safety Board was dispatching a team of crash investigators, including a group from Washington, D.C., and three Los Angeles-based invesetigators who were already en route. NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman said the investigative team would look at all possible causes of the crash and would seek to recover cockpit voice and data recorders.

“Obviously we have a lot of work to do,” Hersman said before departing Washington for the crash scene.

The investigators will work with the FAA, the aircraft’s manufacturer Boeing and Korea’s Air and Accident Investigation Board, Hersman said. Analysts in Washington, D.C. will examine air traffic control records, weather and aircraft maintenance issues, she said. Investigators on the scene will examine the aircraft, the cockpit data recorders and the scene.

She declined to comment on whether early evidences indicates pilot error.

“We have not determined what the focus of this investigation is yet,” she said. “We will be looking at everything. Everything is on the table at this point.”

Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg said in an e-mail that she was on another flight from Korea landing at San Francisco at the time.

“I was on another flight from Korea at the exact same time. We are OK. My friend on that flight is OK, too,” Sandberg told USA TODAY.

The wreckage was sprayed with white fire retardant. Parts of the plane were scattered over a broad area, though the bulk of the plane remained in one piece.

Laura Brown, spokeswoman for the FAA in Washington, said Asiana Flight 214 from Seoul was attempting to land at San Francisco International Airport when it crashed.

“All we know is that a foreign airline, Asiana Airlines Flight 214 arriving from Seoul, South Korea, crashed while landing,” she said. “That’s all I’ve got right now.”

She said it appeared the plane crashed after touching down for a landing, although the sequence of events was not clear.

A passenger, David Eun, tweeted after the crash: “Fire and rescue people all over the place. They’re evacuating the injured. Haven’t felt this way since 9/11.”

Later, Eun tweeted: “I’m fine. Most people are totally calm and trying to help. … the majority of passengers seem OK.”

Boeing, manufacturer of the plane, said in a tweet from its corporate account: “Our thoughts are with everyone affected by today’s incident at SFO. We stand ready to assist the NTSB.”

A graphic depicting the precise glide slope the jet followed to the runway was posted on the live flight-tracking website FlightAware.com. It suggested the plane had a steeper approach angle than the same flight a day earlier.

A video clip posted to YouTube showed smoke coming from a silver-colored jet on the tarmac. Passengers could be seen jumping down the inflatable emergency slides. Images showed the the body of the plane largely intact but with severe fire damage.

The tail of the plane was separated from the aircraft. Weather at the time was clear.

The crash is the first major commercial jet to crash in the United States since a November 2001 crash in New York.

The last fatal accident involving a commercial flight in the United States was Colgan Air Flight 3407, which crashed near Buffalo, killing 50 people, on Feb. 12, 2009.

There has not been an accident involving a major domestic carrier since an American Airlines flight to the Dominican Republic crashed after takeoff in Queens, N.Y., in November 2001, killing all 260 people on board.

In another crash of a Boeing 777-200ER, British Airways flight 38 crashed just short of the runway at London’s Heathrow on Jan. 17, 2008. That crash had no fatalities, but dozens were injured. That crash was blamed on ice crystals clogging the fuel line on a long flight from Beijing.

Asiana Airlines is based in Seoul. Its website says its Boeing 777 can carry from 246 to 300 passengers. Asiana flies 12 B777-200ER twin-engine jets produced by Boeing. The long-haul jet can fly 14 hours non-stop.

The $875.5 billion airline, established in 1988, operates 79 aircraft and flies 91 international routes to 71 cities in 23 countries.

A man who answered the phone at the airlines’ Los Angeles office said the company had no comment. “We’re trying to find out what happened,” he said. The man declined to give his name.

The FAA investigated two accidents involving Asiana within weeks of one another in November 1998.

In the first incident, on Nov. 11, 1998, an Asiana plane with 220 passengers and 18 crew aboard skidded into a parked plane after landing at Anchorage International Airport in Alaska. Federal investigators blamed the pilot for excessive taxi speed and inadequate maneuvering to avoid the parked plane.

On Nov. 30, 1998, an Asiana cargo plane struck and toppled a crane in the safety zone next to the taxiway after it landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. The FAA faulted the co-pilot for misjudging the wing’s clearance.

Baga, Nigeria

July 07, 2013           5:01AM

Children sit in front of a burnt house in Baga, Nigeria, on April 21, 2013 after two days of clashes between officers of the Joint Task Force and members of the Islamist sect Boko Haram, a radical group which wants to create an Islamic state in northern Nigeria.

ISLAMIC militants have attacked a boarding school in northeast Nigeria, killing 42 people, mostly students, some of the pupils being burned alive.

Gunmen believed to be Islamists from Nigeria’s Boko Haram insurgent group, whose name means “Western education is sacrilege”, committed the overnight attack on a secondary school in restive Yobe state, a medical worker and residents said Saturday.

“We received 42 dead bodies of students and other staff of Government Secondary School (in) Mamudo last night. Some of them had gunshot wounds while many of them had burns and ruptured tissues,” Haliru Aliyu of the Potiskum General Hospital told AFP.

Mamudo is some five kilometres from Potiskum, the commercial hub of Yobe State which has been a flashpoint in the Boko Haram insurgency in recent months.

Parents screamed in anguish as they tried to identify charred bodies and gunshot victims.

Farmer Malam Abdullahi found the bodies of two of his sons, a 10-year-old shot in the back as he apparently tried to run away, and a 12-year-old shot in the chest.

“That’s it, I’m taking my other boys out of school,” he said as he wept over the two corpses. He said he had three younger children in a nearby school.

“It’s not safe,” he said. “The gunmen are attacking schools and there is no protection for students despite all the soldiers.”

“We were sleeping when we heard gunshots. When I woke up, someone was pointing a gun at me,” said 15-year-old Musa Hassan.

He put his arm up in defence, and suffered a gunshot that blew off all four fingers on his right hand, the one he uses to write with.

He said the gunmen came armed with jerry cans of fuel that they used to torch the school’s administrative block and one of the hostels.

“They burned the children alive,” he said, the horror showing in his wide eyes.

He and teachers at the morgue said dozens of children from the 1200-student school escaped into the bush but have not been seen since.

Some bodies are so charred they could not be identified, so many parents do not know if their children survived or died.

Islamic militants from Boko Haram and breakaway groups have killed more than 1600 civilians in suicide bombings and other attacks since 2010, according to an Associated Press count.

Scores of schools have been burned down in the past year in northeast Nigeria.

President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency May 14, and deployed thousands of troops to halt the insurgency, acknowledging that militants had taken control of some towns and villages.

The military has claimed success in regaining control of the area – the states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe . However, the area covers some 155,000 square kilometres, or one-sixth of the sprawling country.

Soldiers say they have killed and arrested hundreds of fighters.

But the crackdown, including attacks with fighter jets and helicopter gunships on militant camps, appears to have driven the extremists into rocky mountains with caves, from which they emerge to attack schools and markets.

The militants have increasingly targeted civilians, including health workers on vaccination campaigns, teachers and government workers.

Farmers have been driven from their land by the extremists and by military roadblocks, raising the specter of a food shortage to add to the woes of a people already hampered by the military’s shutdown of cell phone service and ban on using satellite telephones.

All the votes have been cast for the 2013 All-Star Game’s starting spots, and the baseball world now awaits Saturday evening’s announcement of the final tallies.

The All-Stars will be unveiled at 6:30 p.m. ET on Saturday on the 2013 MLB All-Star Game Selection Show presented by Taco Bell, televised nationally on FOX.

Voting concluded at 11:59 p.m. ET on Thursday for the eight position players in each league, as well as the American League’s designated hitter. The winners will represent the two leagues in the All-Star Game at Citi Field on Tuesday, July 16.

As of the most recent voting updates announced earlier this week, Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina was the National League’s leading vote-getter with 5,093,645. Meanwhile, Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera led all of Major League Baseball with 5,844,165 votes.

The tightest races in each league appear to be for the final outfield spot. In an AL East showdown, Toronto’s Jose Bautista led Baltimore’s Nick Markakis by fewer than 150,000 votes, with Mike Trout and Adam Jones leading the pack among AL outfielders.

The race for the NL’s final two starting outfield spots was even tighter, as Carlos Gonzalez, Justin Upton and Bryce Harper were separated by a total of 26,213 votes. As of Monday, Harper was the odd man out.

The wait for the news of the NL’s starting second base spot is also sure to be tense, as the Reds’ Brandon Phillips hopes to hold off late charges from the Cardinals’ Matt Carpenter and the Giants’ Marco Scutaro.

From Saturday until Thursday, be sure to return to MLB.com and cast your 2013 All-Star Game Final Vote Sponsored by freecreditscore.com for the final player for each League’s All-Star roster.

And the voting doesn’t end there. The final phase of All-Star Game voting will again have fans participating in the official voting for the Ted Williams All-Star Game Most Valuable Player Award presented by Chevrolet. During the Midsummer Classic, fans will vote exclusively online at MLB.com via the 2013 All-Star Game MLB.com MVP Vote, and their voice will represent 20 percent of the official vote determining the recipient of the Arch Ward Trophy.

Come to MLB.com for extensive online coverage of the All-Star Week festivities. The 84th All-Star Game will be televised nationally by FOX Sports, in Canada by Rogers Sportsnet and RDS, and worldwide by partners in more than 200 countries via MLB International’s independent feed. ESPN Radio and ESPN Radio Deportes will provide national radio coverage of the All-Star Game. MLB Network and SiriusXM also will also provide comprehensive All-Star Week coverage. Authorities say an 18-year-old Massachusetts woman has died after she was injured when a car struck a group of bicyclists traveling through Arkansas on a cross-country trip.

Merritt Levitan of Milton, Mass., was one of 13 cyclists traveling from Charleston, S.C., to Santa Monica, Calif., as part of a six-week trip organized by a Williamstown, Mass.-based company called Overland.

Overland and Arkansas State Police said Thursday that Levitan died at a hospital in Memphis, Tenn. It was not immediately clear when she died.

Levitan and six others were injured in the crash Tuesday near McCrory, Ark., about 90 miles northeast of Little Rock.

Overland director Jonathan Igoe (EYE-goh’) said two people remained hospitalized in stable condition Thursday.

Prosecutors are considering filing charges against the 21-year-old driver who struck the cyclists.

July 1, 2013            6:47 p.m.

The so-called hotshots were remembered as a rambunctious but respectful bunch: pranksters, sometimes, but dedicated and energetic professionals.

Their boss, Prescott Fire Chief Dan Fraijo, grew apprehensive Sunday as another official told him Prescott’s elite Granite Mountain Interagency Hotshot Crew had dug in to escape the wind-driven Yarnell Hill wildfire.

“All he said was, ‘We might have bad news. The entire hotshot crew deployed their shelters,’ ” Fraijo recalled Monday.

The worst was soon confirmed: All but one member of the 20-man crew died after being overrun by the fire, which destroyed 200 buildings in the small town of Yarnell and exceeded 8,000 acres by Monday.

The tragedy reverberated through Prescott and beyond, as portraits of the lost Prescott crew took shape and the town took its first steps toward mourning the dead.

About half a dozen people gathered on the steps of the county courthouse in downtown Prescott on Monday afternoon to pray for the fallen firefighters, for those left injured and homeless by the blaze and for those still fighting the conflagration.

They also prayed for rain.

“What we’d love to see for our firefighters and the town of Yarnell is more rain and lots of it — and preferably less wind,” said the Rev. Scott Mitchell of The Church Next Door. As the people bowed their heads and consulted their Bibles, fire trucks sped by, “Flagstaff Hot Shots” emblazoned on several vehicles.

“That’s the road to Yarnell,” said the Rev. Dave Barreras, 46, leader of the Yavapai Territorial Gospel Rescue Mission.

But Prescott had no more firefighters to send. Its only wildland team was gone.

The hotshot crew victims were all men, most in their 20s.

“It’s a younger man’s game. These people keep themselves in exceptional condition,” said Fraijo, who added, “I never heard them complain…. They always showed a great deal of respect. They always seemed to be playing pranks on each other, and a few on me.”

The deceased were Andrew Ashcraft, 29; Robert Caldwell, 23; Travis Carder, 31; Dustin Deford, 24; Christopher MacKenzie, 30; Eric Marsh, 43; Grant McKee, 21; Sean Misner, 26; Scott Norris, 28; Wade Parker, 22; John Percin, 24; Anthony Rose, 23; Jesse Steed, 36; Joe Thurston, 32; Travis Turbyfill, 27; William Warneke, 25; Clayton Whitted, 28; Kevin Woyjeck, 21; and Garret Zuppiger, 27.

At least three hailed from Southern California: Woyjeck from Seal Beach and Warneke and MacKenzie from Hemet.

The identity of the crew member who survived has not been released.

“He’s well; he had been assigned to do a function and he wasn’t with them when they had deployed to shelter,” Fraijo said. “He feels terribly, and we all feel terribly, and we have very few words that express that sort of sorry. When you take a person in your arms and hug ’em, you know, you don’t have to say too much.”

Dennis Godfrey, a spokesman with the federal Bureau of Land Management, said officials had expected that 400 firefighters would be on duty Monday, but only 280 were on the lines by afternoon.

Godfrey said officials were hoping for more but didn’t know when, or whether, they would arrive. “There are fires elsewhere,” Godfrey said. “We only have so many resources to deal with.”

Thunderheads built over Prescott on Monday, delivering thunder, lightning and heavy rain by midday. But by 3:30 p.m., none of the rain had hit the fire area.

The blaze was sparked by a lightning strike Friday, officials said.

In a sprawling gymnasium on a college campus in Prescott, cots were set up and meals were being served for those who fled the raging wildfire. Between 40 and 50 people had registered at the facility, organized by the Red Cross, and more were expected by nightfall, said Michele Maki of the Red Cross.

Shelters had also been organized in Wickenburg and Kingman.

“It’s been a very busy day for the Red Cross,” Maki said. The shelters are meant to serve not only as a place to eat or rest, she said, but also as a place to seek emotional and spiritual help from counselors and chaplains.

“For these people, it’s very personal,” Maki said.

Kathy Bryan of Williamson Valley said the members of the fire crew who perished helped save her home from the Doce blaze after it flared up June 18 in the Granite Mountain Wilderness, northwest of Prescott. That’s roughly 20 miles north of the Yarnell Hill fire.

“These hotshots were on our properties, saving them … saving my house,” Bryan said. “It’s heartbreaking.”

Bryan and her dogs fled her home before the blaze approached. Soon Bryan’s cousin called, letting her know that the wife of one of the hotshots fighting the blaze had offered Bryan a place to stay. That woman is now a widow, Bryan said.

Now Bryan believes it’s her turn to help. “I need to find out what she needs,” Bryan said she told her cousin. “What can I do for her?”

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, U.S. Army Sgt. T.J. Ashcraft said one of the dead firefighters was his younger brother Andrew, who was a good man and a good father to his four children.

“We always kind of pushed each other in good ways,” said Ashcraft, 32. “He went the firefighter route and I went the military route.”

Another dead firefighter, Anthony Rose, was expecting his first child with his fiancee, according to family friend Phyllis Barney of Glendale, Ariz.

Barney’s family met Rose in the small Arizona town of Crown King, southeast of Prescott, when Rose moved there at age 16. In Crown King, Rose earned his GED online and went to work for the local fire department.

“Just getting notifications that an entire crew is killed … is a little difficult to handle when they’re your own and whatnot,” Barney said. “But when you’ve got one that really was kind of your own … it’s even tougher.”

The firefighters’ bodies were taken to the Maricopa County medical examiner’s office in Phoenix on Monday, and it was not clear when they would be returned to Prescott. Officials were still deciding when to hold a formal memorial service.

Some of the cirumstances of the crew’s plight came into slightly sharper focus Monday, although officials cautioned that it could be a couple of days before more preliminary information was available while investigators picked through the disaster area.

Before the flames overtook the firefighters, a thunderstorm cell had moved into their location west of state Highway 89 between Yarnell and Peeples Valley, fire officials said.

The storm created strong and erratic winds in an area described as extremely rocky, with rough terrain and deep canyons. The gusts pushed the flames toward the hotshots, who were trying to create a firebreak in hopes of stopping the flames’ advance, said Wade Ward, a spokesman for the Prescott Fire Department.

As the winds shifted and fire approached, the men were probably trying to get to safety — usually a clearing, Ward said.

“It had to be a perfect storm” for them to have deployed their fire shelters — a last-ditch effort made in desperate situations, he said. Officials lost contact with the crew about 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

“Obviously wherever they deployed their shelters, they were too close to heavy fuels, so they got overrun,” said Art Morrison, a fire spokesman with the Arizona State Forestry Division.

Ward knew the men, calling them “brothers.” He described the elite team  as “very cautious” and “very conservative.”

Wade Parker, 22, of Chino Valley, about 30 miles north of Prescott, was another of the victims.

Parker’s 14-year-old cousin, Hailey McMains, viewed him as a big brother. “After church, we would find a place to sit and talk about life,” Hailey said. Wade would ask her: “’Anything we need to pray for, Hailey?’ If I was having a bad week, we’d pray about that.”

Hailey said Wade and his high school sweetheart planned to marry in October. They had been together six years, she said.

She was at the home of an aunt and uncle Sunday evening when she heard on the news that some firefighters had died. “I asked my aunt, ‘Is Wade OK?’” Hailey said.

Her aunt put her fingers to her lips and said: “Sssssshhhhhhh,” pointing to one of Wade’s young nephews.

“A little while later, as I was leaving, she whispered, ‘Wade didn’t make it, Hailey,’ ” the girl recalled. “I cried all night long.”

Police have released surveillance video from an Oklahoma Walmart of a man who allegedly took a 2-year-old girl from a mother’s shopping cart and held a knife to the child’s throat.

Surveillance cameras at the Midwest City, Okla., Walmart were rolling June 17 when police shot and killed the suspect, Sammie Wallace, in the head at point-blank range and safely returned the toddler to her mother.

In the dramatic video, Wallace, 37, takes the toddler hostage while her mother, Alicia Keating, had her back to the shopping cart. Keating began to scream and pleaded with the suspect to return her daughter.

Keating’s older daughter was also present as the incident unfolded in front of panicked shoppers.

Law enforcement quickly moved in and evacuated the store. Police began more than 30 minutes of negotiations with Wallace and, at one point, even offered him a chair.

“He had a weapon in his hand. A knife-type weapon holding up against the child, threatening the child’s life,” Midwest City Assistant Police Chief Sid Porter said.

Police say Wallace was uncooperative and the situation quickly deteriorated, with the suspect making odd demands. The tipping point came when Wallace started an ominous 60-second countdown with the knife still close to the toddler’s neck.

“When a subject starts telling you that in 60 seconds he’s going to kill a hostage, that’s going to move you right up to the point that you will shoot him and that’s what occurred in this case,” ABC News consultant and former FBI agent Brad Garrett said.

With the situation growing intense, an officer distracted Wallace as Capt. David Huff moved in and fired a single deadly shot at his head.

“Obviously, our goal was to talk him down to get him to release the child,” Midwest City Police Chief Brandon Clabes said. “Unfortunately, we weren’t successful but we were successful in saving this child and the fact is that Capt. Huff’s actions were extremely heroic and he waited till the very last moment.”

The toddler was uninjured in the incident and returned to her mother, who was waiting for her at the front of the store.

Hotshot facts:

• Hotshot crews were first used in Southern California after World War II.

• The name “hotshot” comes from the hottest part of the fire, the place where these crews are usually work.

• Crews can be sent across the country, often hiking or taking a helicopter into rugged terrain.

• Crews are required to remain on call during fire season, which can last up around six months.

• Because of their demanding jobs, hotshots are required to maintain a high fitness level.

• Interagency Hotshot Crews (IHC), the umbrella organization for hotshot crews, was created in the early 1980s.

“Fire everywhere!”

Phillip “Mando” Maldonado, a squad leader, shouts instructions as a dozen hotshots, firefighters trained to combat wildfires in extreme conditions, face a nightmare scenario: flames rushing in from all sides and their survival hinging on successfully unfolding and wrapping themselves in thin sheets of heat-reflecting material.

“Get down! Heads toward center!” Maldonado yells, the urgency in his voice rising.

Diving to the ground, crew members attempt to form a tight circle and point their feet toward the approaching flames. That will deflect heat and help protect their torsos. They clamp down on the edges of their emergency shelters to make sure fire, smoke and heat can’t get inside, and they keep their faces near the ground to breathe cooler air that won’t damage their lungs.

There’s nothing to do now but wait.

Walking among the shelters several minutes later, Maldonado and another squad leader, Clayton Whitted, see that first-year hotshot Shane Arollado has made a fatal mistake: His head pointed toward the approaching fire.

Suddenly the survivors ask playfully if Arollado’s girlfriend is now available.

“Like hell!” Arollado shouts.

Members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, one of 112 Interagency Hotshot Crews around the country, have never had to use shelters during a wildfire. But working in remote locations to get ahead of the most dangerous sections of fires makes knowing how to do so a matter of life and death.

Training is crucial, especially for the four rookies on the 22-member squad.

“If we’re not actually doing it, we’re thinking and planning about it,” said Eric Marsh, superintendent of the Granite Mountain Hotshots.

“When we get out there, it’s a completely different ballgame,” said Daniel McCarty, another squad leader. “It’s the real deal. We have to look out for each other.”

The crew, one of 13 hotshot teams in Arizona, has eight full-time members. The rest work from April until September.

Brady Higgs, in his second year with the crew, said the camaraderie and opportunity to travel drew him to this job.

“I couldn’t work inside, I don’t think,” Higgs said. “I enjoy the work, I enjoy getting to go outside and see the country.”

Being on a hotshot crew means one is on call throughout fire season, staying close enough to head out on short notice.

Fire duty can mean staying in the forest rather than returning to base camp for the night. Members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots sometimes have to spend up to two straight weeks in the wilderness, getting supplies by helicopter.

“These guys kinda become my family,” said Maldonado, the squad leader. “I saw them more than I saw my girlfriend last year.”

Last year, the Granite Mountain Hotshots fought some of the biggest fires in Arizona — Wallow, Horseshoe Two and Monument – as well as blazes in states such as Colorado, New Mexico and Minnesota.

Having to operate in the wilderness with little support, training is a way of life. On a recent weekday, preparing for fire season, members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots practiced setting up fire shelters as well as cutting fire lines.

The day included watching a video on how to use emergency shelters and what conditions crew members might face if overrun by fire.

The video featured survivors of the 1990 Dude Fire near Payson, in which six firefighters died despite wrapping themselves in shelters.

For training, crew members used green tarps shaped and packaged like fire shelters. Once the hotshots got inside, other crew members yanked on the tarps to simulate the high winds they could face.

After running the exercise once, they did it again.

When Arollado “died” during both run-throughs – it was his first time using a shelter – squad leaders Maldonado and Whitted pulled him aside to give tips.

“They were really great at showing me where I went wrong,” Arollado said. “There’s always someone trying to point you in the right direction.”

The crew also dug 1,000 feet of 3-foot-wide fire line, with some hotshots wielding chainsaws to cut down down trees and bushes.

Marsh, the crew’s superintendent, said later that everyone was rusty with training just under way. It’s particularly difficult for rookies who only have classroom experience, he said.

“It’s not uncommon to have a rookie die,” Marsh said. “Fake die, of course.”

But better to have mistakes happen here, where training can correct them, than in a real fire.

“In any other job you don’t have to worry about your life day in and day out,” said McCarty, the squad leader. “But in this job you have to watch your buddy too.”

A wildfire destroys homes in the Glenn Ilah area near Yarnell, Ariz., June 30, 2013.
July 1, 2013

An elite team of 19 firefighters died Sunday while trying to protect themselves under fire-resistant shields from a fast-moving wildfire in Yarnell, Ariz., according to officials.

Authorities believe the wildfire began in Yarnell, about 90 miles northwest of Phoenix, Friday with a lightning strike and spread to at least 2,000 acres Sunday amid triple-digit temperatures, low humidity and windy conditions. As of 3 a.m. this morning, the Yarnell fire had tripled in size and is now 6,000 acres, according to Arizona incident commander Mike Reichling.

Eighteen of the victims were from the Prescott Granite Mountain Hotshots, fire officials said. It’s unclear where the other victim was based.

“We grieve for the family. We grieve for the department. We grieve for the city,” Prescott Fire Chief Dan Fraijo said at a Sunday night news conference. “We’re devastated. We just lost 19 of some of the finest people you’ll ever meet.”

The 19 deaths is the greatest loss of life for firefighters in a wildfire since 1933, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

It is also the deadliest day for U.S. firefighters since 9/11, when 340 died.

The team was known as a “hotshot” crew and was deployed to attack the fire line with tools.

“Hotshot” crews are elite firefighters who often hike for miles into the wilderness with chain saws and backpacks filled with heavy gear to build lines of protection between people and fires. They remove brush, trees and anything that might burn in the direction of homes and cities.

“They’re not the people that have engine companies and large trucks. These are the core of firefighting where they’re right there in the middle of the incident,” Fraijo said.

Fraijo said the crew killed in the Yarnell fire worked other wildfires in recent weeks in New Mexico and Arizona.

He added that the firefighters had to deploy the tent-like structures when “something drastic” occurred.

“One of the last fail-safe methods that a firefighter can do under those conditions is literally to dig as much as they can down and cover themselves with a protective — kind of looks like a foil type, fire-resistant material — with the desire, the hope, at least, is that the fire will burn over the top of them and they can survive it,” Fraijo said.

The Prescott-based crew never had to use shelters during a wildfire, according to a 2012 profile in a Cronkite News Service report.

Reichling, the incident commander, said half of the 500 structures in Yarnell have been destroyed by the “radical weather.” Most of Yarnell’s 700 residents have been forced to evacuate.

“We have fires throughout the state right now. We have the winds that change. That’s what happened today and caused this tragedy,” he said.

Evacuee Don Mason said, “I don’t know if my home’s standing or not, but from what I’ve heard, most of Yarnell has burned to the ground. So it’s been tough.”

About 200 firefighters are fighting the wildfire, which has also forced the closure of parts of state Route 89. None of the fire is contained.

President Obama, who is traveling in Africa, released a statement early this morning, calling the 19 firefighters “heroes” for putting “themselves in harm’s way to protect the lives and property of fellow citizens they would never meet.”

Former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords expressed her shock on Twitter, calling the death of the firefighters “absolutely devastating news.”

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer said in a statement, “This is as dark a day as I can remember. It may be days or longer before an investigation reveals how this tragedy occurred, but the essence we already know in our hearts: fighting fires is dangerous work.”

Brewer said she would travel to the area later today.

3:58: The New Jersey Devils acquired Cory Schneider from the Vancouver Canucks for the ninth-overall pick.

3:50: The Bufffalo Sabres have picked defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen out of Finland. The Sabres will pick again later in the first round, but decided to take a defenseman as skilled Russian forward Valeri Nichushkin continues to fall on the board.

3:48: Are the troubling Sergei Bobrovsky contract negotiations in Columbus causing the snub of Russia forward Valeri Nichuskin? He’s an Evgeni Malkin-like talent, but teams are concerned that the Kontinental Hockey League might open up the vault and offer him a contract he can’t refuse.

3:45: Very logical pick for the Oilers to take Darnell Nurse. He’s the big defenseman they need to play with all of their great forwards. He’s hard to play against, and he has some offensive up-side.

3:43: The Islanders ship out Nino Niederreiter, trading him to the Wild for Cal Clutterbuck. Islanders get one of the most aggressive hitters in the game in exchange for a forward with potential to be a 30-goal guy . He played well at the World championships.

3:38: Calgary Flames GM Jay Feaster acknowledges the losses in the recent flood. “We are southern Alberta and we’ll be back even stronger,” he said. The Flames take Sean Monahan with the sixth pick.

3:33: Carolina Hurricanes take Elias Lindholm with the fifth pick.

3:27: Predators GM David Poile didn’t expect Seth Jones to drop to fourth, but he did. Poile takes him. Said earlier he considered him the top prospect in the draft. Jones’ father, former NBA player Popeye Jones, was born in Dresden, Tenn. Played ball at Murray State.

3:21: Tampa Bay takes Jonathan Drouin with the third pick. The Predators will not pass on Seth Jones at No. 4. GM David Poile loves him.

3:20: It took a little more than six minutes between the first pick and the second pick. That’s good time. That would mean a first round lasting a little more than three hours.

3:17: Teams love offense, even though premium defensemen are hard to find. Florida snubs Seth Jones to take Alexander Barkov who was a point-per-game guy in the Finnish Elite League

3:10: Colorado’s Joe Sakic wasn’t bluffing. He took a forward with a first overall pick, and as expected, it was Nathan MacKinnon from Halifax.

2:55: Commissioner Gary Bettman paid tribute to agent Don Baizley, who died this week of cancer. Baizley was one of the most respected agents in the game. Fans booed Bettman, paused to allow the Baizley tribute, and then continued to boo Bettman.

2:50: The New Jersey Devils fans had loudest boos for the New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Los Angeles Kings and Minnesota Wild during the roll of teams before the draft.

The booing of the Rangers was loudest because they are the Devils’ archrival. But the boos for rivals Pittsburgh and Philadelphia were strong. The New Jersey fans booed Los Angeles because the Kings beat the Devils in the 2012 Stanley Cup Final and they booed Minnesota because New Jersey’s Zach Parise left the Devils to sign with the Wild in 2012.

2:45 p.m.: The Pittsburgh Penguins announced that they sent forward Tyler Kennedy to the San Jose Sharks for a second-round pick (50th overall). Kennedy, 26, had spent his entire NHL career with the Penguins.

2:30 p.m.: Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said he met with free agent center Vinny Lecavalier for 30 to 40 minutes Sunday morning, but he received no indication how long Lecavalier will take to make a decision.

“I don’t know what their process is,” said Holland, who said he was sure Lecavalier had penty of teams interested.

The Calgary Flames are known to be interested, along with the Dallas Stars and Montreal Canadiens among others

Lecavalier does have a relationship with Calgary general manager Jay Feaster, who was GM in Tampa Bay when Lecavalier was helping the team win the Stanley Cup. The Flames need an offensive center, and Lecavalier, at 33, is still capable of scoring 60-plus points.

2 p.m.: This year’s draft is different because teams can only take five minutes between each pick. Players are being asked to hug a few less people when they are picked to help ensure the draft doesn’t last too long.

Noon: The first trade on what’s supposed to be a heavy day of trades was a small one. The New York Rangers acquired Minnesota Wild defenseman Justin Falk for forward Benn Ferriero and a sixth-round pick in 2014. Falk had three assists in 36 games last season.

Doink the Clown Dead – Cause Unknown

June 29, 2013

From 1992 to 1996, Matt Osborne put on the white makeup, the green wig, and one of the most recognizable sets of wrestling tights you’ll ever lay eyes on. He plied his trade in the World Wrestling Federation (predecessor to the WWE) as Doink the Clown. He started out just working the crowd ringside, not actually jumping in the ring until 1993. When he did hop the top rope, he came on as a villain – but a clown of a villain – pouring water on opponents, setting up trip wires. Once he hit Jerry Lawler in the face with a pie. The Doink the Clown character was so popular that other people in addition to Osborne were enlisted to play him in multiple locations on circuit. Sometimes they even teamed up to attack opponents in tandem.

But Matt Osborne was a troubled soul. He was fired from the WWE for repeated drug abuse offenses. He eventually left the Doink character to another, then another. Big name wrestlers have even dressed up as Doink the Clown themselves, such as when Chris Jericho dressed up as Doink in 2001 and attacked William Regal.

Matt Osborne himself actually had wrestling experience that predated Doink’s 1992 appearance. He had been on the independent wrestling circuit since 1978. He then wrestled for World Class Championship Wrestling (WCCW), then World Championship Wrestling (WCW), before joining the WWF in 1992. He wrestled a few matches under his own name before his famous debut in the ring as Doink.

Osborne eventually ended up back in the independent circuit again, wrestling in National Guard Armories and high school gyms. He had ups and downs, mini-reunions, bits of success. In 2010 he won the Wrecking Ball Wrestling Championship.

On Friday, June 28, Osborne was found dead by his girlfriend in their home in Texas. Police initially called his death accidental, but have launched a homicide investigation.

A New York couple is suing their dog-sitter, claiming she won’t give back their champion Samoyed named Polar Mist You Gotta Believe and had the animal neutered, ruining his value.

Cecile and Victor Stanton, of Jericho, N.Y., filed a lawsuit against Beverly Jeffries of Pasadena, Calif., on June 26 in the Superior Court of Los Angeles County, Calif., claiming she refuses to return their dog. In a contract between the two parties signed in February and included in the lawsuit, the Stantons agreed to give temporary physical custody of the AKC-registered Grand Champion to Jeffries while they retained ownership.

The Stantons bought the dog, which answers to the name Justin, in 2006, according to a certificate issued by the American Kennel Club.  When the Stantons asked for Justin to be returned in May, Jeffries refused, the suit states.

In their lawsuit the Stantons  maintain that Jeffries neutered Justin without their permission in April. The dog, a stud used for breeding, is worth an estimated $250,000, according to the suit.

In the lawsuit the Stantons estimate that they have lost $100,000 in breeding value, now that the dog has been neutered.

The Stantons are suing Jeffries for $350,000, citing breach of contract, promissory fraud, and intentional infliction of severe emotional distress.

It is unclear if Jeffries has an attorney. She  could not be reached for comment.

The Stantons and their attorney did not return ABC News’ request for comment.

IF YOU “look sad or angry for no reason”, chances are you’re affected by bitchy resting face.

If you haven’t already heard of BRF, a spoof YouTube video explaining the ‘condition’ has garnered over two million hits – and now Anna Paquin has confessed on Jimmy Kimmel Live that she suffers from it too.

“It means you look like you want to kill people, or like you’re a giant bitch, and apparently that’s pretty much how I come across! But I’m happy my life is good,” she said, before showing Kimmel what BRF looks like.

Devised by comedian Taylor Orci from Broken People, the bitchy resting face video has struck a chord with women – and men – across the globe.

Orci says that “bitchy resting face is a disorder that affects millions of women every day. Together we can face the problem” – and plastic surgeon Dr. Anthony Youn agrees.

He confirmed the condition to Today.com, telling them that he has performed many “expression surgeries” on women to change their natural facial expressions.

“Bitchy resting face is a definite phenomenon that plastic surgeons like myself have described, just never with that term,” he said

“Basically many of us have features that we inherit and/or develop with age that can make us look unpleasant, grumpy, or even, yes, bitchy.”

He estimates that each year, he performs 20 “grin lifts”, 100 filler procedures to turn up the corners of the mouth and 1500 Botox injections to relax frown lines.

New Zealand Missing Schooner.JPEG

June 27, 2013

A New Zealand meteorologist took the last known calls from the seven people aboard an American schooner, “The weather’s turned nasty, how do we get away from it?”

The phone calls and texts ended June 4. More than three weeks later, searchers said Thursday they have grave concerns for the crew on the classic 85-year-old wooden vessel that went missing while sailing from New Zealand to Australia. Attempts to contact the crew by radio and an aerial search this week have proved fruitless.

Authorities say the skipper of the 70-foot (21-meter) vessel Nina is American David Dyche. They say there are two other American men and three American women aboard, aged between 17 and 73. Also aboard is a British man, aged 35.

Messages posted online by friends indicate the boat originally left from Panama City, Florida.

Meteorologist Bob McDavitt said he took a satellite phone call from the boat June 3. A woman named Evi asked how to get away from the weather. He said to call back in 30 minutes after he’d studied a forecast. She did.

“She was quite controlled in her voice, it sounded like everything was under control,” McDavitt said, adding that the call itself indicated she was concerned about the conditions.

McDavitt said he spoke only briefly to Evi, advising her to head south and to brace for a storm with strong winds and high seas. The next day he got a text, the last known communication from the boat: “ANY UPDATE 4 NINA? … EVI”

McDavitt said he advised the crew to stay put and ride out the storm another day. He continued sending messages the next few days but didn’t hear back. Friends of the crew got in touch with McDavitt soon after that, and then alerted authorities June 14.

Kevin Banaghan, who is spearheading search efforts by Maritime New Zealand’s Rescue Coordination Centre, said rescuers weren’t worried at first because there had been no distress call from the boat and its emergency locator beacon had not been activated. He said rescuers on June 14 initiated a communications search, in which they tried contacting the boat over various radio frequencies as well as contacting other vessels in the area to see if they’d spotted the Nina.

This week, he said, rescuers escalated their efforts. An Air Force plane on Tuesday searched the area where the boat went missing. A second search by the plane on Wednesday went as far as the Australian coast but again turned up nothing. Banaghan said searchers are considering their next options.

The boat left the Bay of Islands in northern New Zealand on May 29 bound for the port of Newcastle, near Sydney. The last communication was from 370 nautical miles west of New Zealand.

Banaghan said the crew hoped to arrive in Australia mid-June but that, given the conditions, he considered a realistic arrival date to be about June 25. He said Dyche is a qualified captain and the crew has varying degrees of experience.

“We’re very concerned for their safety and wellbeing,” he said.

Authorities say the storm three weeks ago saw winds gusting up to 110 kilometers (68 miles) per hour and waves of up to 8 meters (26 feet).

Banaghan said the Nina is a “lovely old craft” which won races when it was new and had been maintained in excellent condition. He added that it had a new engine installed in recent months which had apparently created some initial leaking problems.

He said there are several possible scenarios, including the boat losing communications, drifting off course, or the crew taking to lifeboats. He said there’s also a possibility the boat suffered a catastrophic failure and sank before anybody had time to react.

A homeless man accused of killing a woman visiting one of Hollywood’s most famous tourist destinations was well known to authorities.

Over the last eight years, Dustin James Kinnear, 26, was arrested at least 46 times, including seven arrests for assault with a deadly weapon, according to court records and interviews. Along the Hollywood Walk of Fame, he had a reputation as an aggressive panhandler and troublemaker.

His mother said he had been in and out of mental health treatment facilities since age 5 and suffered from multiple conditions that could make him violent.

“I always knew I would get a call about him being dead or doing something awful,” said April Pena, who is a police detective in Tucson. “Our family is beside itself. We are really sick because we know he’s taken a life. We think of him as the young person we once knew. But I’ve called the police on him many times.”

Kinnear has roamed the streets of Hollywood since 2008. Pena said he left Tucson by train after a court had ordered him to undergo mental health treatment..

But in Hollywood, his criminal behavior got progressively worse, records show.

On the evening of June 18, he and another homeless man were sitting near the Hollywood & Highland entertainment complex when Christine Calderon, 23, and a co-worker walked past. Calderon pulled out her cellphone to snap a picture of three transients displaying signs asking for money with four-letter insults and a smiley face.

One of the men demanded that she pay a dollar for the picture. When she refused, police say, two of the men pinned Calderon’s co-worker against a wall. Kinnear allegedly jumped on Calderon and fatally stabbed her.

Kinnear was charged with murder last week and pleaded not guilty.

In the wake of the slaying, Los Angeles Police Department officials and local prosecutors have defended their handling of Kinnear. They said they aggressively pursued him and sought the maximum punishment available under the law.

But some officials said the case illustrates how chronic offenders with mental problems can slip through the cracks until it is too late.

“There were red flags all over this guy, and the system was color blind,” said L.A. County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky.

Kinnear built up his lengthy arrest record both in Tucson and in Los Angeles. Many of the arrests were for minor offenses such as possession of marijuana and trespassing.

In November 2010, Kinnear wandered into a Subway sandwich shop in Hollywood and tried to take a soda. A security guard confronted him. Kinnear allegedly grabbed a broomstick and starting hitting the guard on the head with it, saying, “I’m going to kill you.”

He was arrested and later pleaded guilty to assault with great bodily injury. Kinnear got a year in jail for the felony assault plus three years probation. He received 49 days credit for time served and spent several months in jail before going on probation.

Within weeks of being released, Kinnear violated his probation with various misdemeanor charges such as defecating in public and failing to appear in court and for probation meetings, records show. Over the next year, judges would revoke his probation a dozen times.

In September 2011, his public defender, Marya Shahriary, told a judge of Kinnear’s mental problems.

“We have a young man who is bipolar, paranoid, schizophrenic and epileptic. Before this problem, he was described taking Klonopin and Dilantin,” she said, referring to two drugs used to treat anxiety, bipolar disorder, epilepsy and seizures.

Shahriary said Kinnear had not been able to make all his court appearances because he had been injured in a bike accident in Hollywood. She added that he had been trying to turn his life around by working at a West Hollywood food bank.

During this period, Kinnear was in and out of jail frequently, serving small stretches before being released. In June 2012, he was ordered to attend a year-long residential drug treatment program but fled the facility within a few weeks.

Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst said Wednesday he was “frustrated” with the results of an epic special legislative session after he declared at about 3 a.m. that the state’s hotly contested abortion bill could not be passed.

Dewhurst said an “unruly mob using Occupy Wall Street tactics” defeated the legislation he said was intended to protect women and babies, according to the Texas Tribune.

Protesters in the gallery erupted in cheers along with Senate Democrats when the clock struck midnight without a final vote having taken place, preventing Republican senators from completing the voting process within the constitutionally prescribed time and effectively defeating the bill.

Clashes broke out in the legislature yesterday as ruling party and opposition lawmakers pushed and shoved to take over the podium during the last day of the extra legislative session.

A male lawmaker complained of being bitten by a female colleague, while another female lawmaker screamed as she was frog-marched from the podium by a male opponent. Several legislators also had coffee sprayed on their faces during a scuffle.

The podium was first occupied by Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) lawmakers, who were instructed by the party on Monday night to assemble outside the legislative chamber before 6:30am. When Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and Taiwan Solidarity Union (TSU) lawmakers arrived soon after, fighting broke out.

Running out of the legislative hall in tears, KMT Legislator Wang Huei-mei (王惠美) told reporters she could not believe it when DPP Legislator Pasuya Yao (姚文智) grabbed her hands from behind and dragged her away from the podium.

“It’s the last day of the extra legislative session. What I was asking was that we should begin reviewing bills. Why did he attack a woman?” Wang asked.

Yao said he was trying to tell Wang not to jostle for space with DPP Legislator Hsu Chih-chieh (許智傑), who was already on the podium.

KMT Legislator Wu Yu-jen (吳育仁) showed reporters a bite mark on his upper left arm, accusing DPP Legislator Lin Shu-fen (林淑芬) of biting him when she rushed into the chamber and saw him standing on the podium.

“I didn’t feel pain at first, but it began to hurt an hour or two later. I think she bit me really hard,” Wu said.

Wu later posted a message on his Facebook page saying that he had taken a doctor’s advice and received a tetanus shot to prevent possible infection.

In response, Lin accused Wu of pressing his body against her and scratching her frantically.

“I bit him because he touched my breasts,” Lin said.

Lin apologized to DPP legislators Ho Hsin-chun (何欣純) and Hsueh Ling (薛凌) and to KMT Legislator Hsieh Kuo-liang (謝國樑) for accidentally spraying them with water and coffee during the confrontation. She refused to apologize to Wu.

“Why should I apologize to someone who touched my breasts?” Lin said.

Several DPP lawmakers also demanded that Wu apologize to Lin.

Later last night, Wu denied that he deliberately touched Lin’s breasts, but added that if she felt uncomfortable about the incident, he was willing to apologize.

KMT Legislator Ma Wen-Chun (馬文君) also wrestled with Lin in a separate clash.

In another round of fighting, DPP Legislator Chen Ting-fei (陳亭妃) was bundled into the back of KMT Legislator Chen Shu-hui (陳淑慧) and pulled out some of the latter’s hair.

KMT Legislator Huang Chao-shun (黃昭順) checked into a hospital, saying she injured her back after she was pushed to the ground and could barely stand up.

The KMT occupied the podium to ensure the passage of a number of controversial bills, while the DPP and the TSU staged a boycott to protest the signing of a cross-strait service trade agreement om Friday last week in Shanghai.

Lawmakers managed to reach a consensus on how to handle the controversial issues at 12:45pm, bringing the nearly six-hour long deadlock to an end.

Saints Row 4

June 25, 2013         6:50PM

THE newest instalment of top-selling video game Saints Row has been banned in Australia, becoming the first title to be refused classification after the introduction of an R18+ rating for games in January this year.

Saints Row IV will be banned from sale in Australia under the ruling, announced by Classification Board acting director Donald McDonald late on Tuesday.

Mr McDonald said the Board had refused an adults-only rating to the game due to “interactive, visual depictions of implied sexual violence not justified by context” and “elements of illicit or proscribed drug use related to incentives or rewards”.

Mr McDonald said Saints Row IV was the first game banned from sale since the new video game classifications came into action six months ago, with other titles including Ninja Gaiden: Razor’s Edge and Mortal Kombat receiving an R18+ rating.

“Apart from today’s decision, since the beginning of the year, the board has classified 17 games R18+ under the new guidelines,” he said.

American-based publisher THQ can appeal the decision to the Classification Board, or censor elements of the game and reapply for a classification in Australia.

It has yet to respond to the board’s decision.

The last game in the series, Saints Row: The Third, received an MA15+ rating in Australia prior to the introduction of the R18+ rating, and no other title in the series has been banned.

Prior to the adults-only rating introduction, however, many big-name games were refused classification in Australia, including Fallout 3PostalLeft 4 Dead 2, and four Grand Theft Auto titles, which feature similar open-world, crime-based gameplay to Saints Row.

THE moment a drunk and irate passenger allegedly attacked a pilot in front of shocked onlookers has been caught on camera.

Donald Gee, 53, was arrested over the incident at Washington Dulles International Airport last week.

A video posted on Liveleak.com shows the irate passenger yelling obscenities at the United Airlines pilot over his delayed flight to Philadelphia.

When the pilot informs him the flight is grounded and he “won’t be getting on a plane”, Gee allegedly continues to curse at him and threatens to attack.

He walks away and sits down but remarks: “I’ll step outside any time you want to”.

The pilot replies: “you don’t need to step outside, I’m right here”, to which the man says “you wanna go right now?” and walks over to the pilot, hitting him in the face several times.

Gee is then tackled to the ground by airline employees.

Gee was charged in Loudoun County District Court with simple assault and public intoxication.

A United Airlines spokesman told ABC 7: “Violence against our employees is unacceptable and we will review this closely. We are fully cooperating with authorities and do not have further comment at this time.”

news.com.au has contacted the airline for further comment.

June 24, 2013             6:02 AM AT

One of the suspects in the murder of Phillip Boudreau told police the victim was shot and then run down as he sat helpless in a stalled motor boat, documents obtained by CBC show.

Boudreau’s overturned boat was found at the mouth of Petit-de-Grat harbour early on the morning of June 1. The 43-year-old’s body has not been recovered.

Three crewmen from the lobster boat Twin Maggies face second-degree murder charges in the case.

The investigator’s file said one of those crewmen, 65-year-old James Joseph Landry, gave statements to RCMP investigators shortly after his arrest on June 8.

CBC News has obtained a portion of the police file that includes the story Landry told. His claims have not been proven in court and may not be true, but they do form the basis for the case that is now before the courts.

In the statement, Landry claimed the crew of the Twin Maggies rounded the point off Petit-de-Grat early in the morning and spotted Boudreau in a small motor boat cutting their trap lines.

He claimed Boudreau had cut as many as 30 trap lines earlier in the season and had cut five or six before the Twin Maggies found him that morning.

Other fishermen in Petit-de-Grat have told CBC Boudreau was cutting lines as part of a long-standing territorial dispute on the water.

Landry told police that Boudreau waved his knife in the air, apparently mocking the crew of the Twin Maggies as they raced toward him.

He told investigators Boudreau had mocked him the same way with the knife at a convenience store one day earlier, demonstrating how he had cut the Twin Maggies’ trap lines. He claimed Boudreau had been destroying other people’s fishing gear for 10 years and he was fed up.

According to the statement, Landry said he was enraged and saw black when Boudreau mocked him from the smaller boat that morning. Landry told police five minutes is all it takes for something bad to happen and he described what took place in those few minutes on the water that morning.

He said he had his Winchester 30-30 rifle on the boat as he always did. Lobster crews often carry rifles to shoot seals if they are found damaging gear.

Landry said on this day, he used it on Boudreau.

He said crewmember Craig Landry, 40, did what he was told and loaded the gun and gave it to him, as Capt. Dwayne Matthew Samson, 43, raced the Twin Maggies toward Boudreau’s smaller boat.

Landry told investigators he began shooting when the Twin Maggies was 35 to 45 metres from Boudreau’s boat and continued as they closed in.

He said Boudreau tried to race away but could not because his motor stalled. Landry said he may have hit the motor with a bullet, or perhaps the motor became entangled in the lines Boudreau was cutting.

Landry described Boudreau sitting in the small boat and turning white as he realized he was about to be shot.

He told investigators he hit Boudreau with one shot that knocked him over on his side in the boat, but that he kept shooting.

He said he fired four shots and believes the second shot hit Boudreau.

With Boudreau down in the small motor boat, Landry said the Twin Maggies ran it over a couple of times.

At first Landry told investigators he was at the wheel as they passed over Boudreau and his boat. Later, he told them Samson — his son in-law — was in control.

He said he lied to take the blame so he could protect Samson and Craig Landry, who are younger.

Landry took investigators back to Isle Madame and turned over the rifle he said he used.

Sources have told CBC News that police are now running ballistic tests, trying to match the rifle to a bullet found in Boudreau’s overturned boat. Landry has told investigators the bullet will match.

Landry, Samson and Craig Landry are all set to appear briefly in a Port Hawkesbury courtroom Monday morning.

Dates are expected to be set at that time for preliminary hearings and bail applications.

All of the allegations contained in this story are based solely on untested claims made to police by Landry. None of this has been entered as evidence in any case and none of it has been challenged by defence lawyers involved in the case.

“My diverse background and experiences that I bring to the show will help me win. I’m surrounded by all types of people; I’m good at dealing with them and I’m good at organizing and planning.”

Dee grew up amongst eastern and western influences, in Thailand where she was born, and in the States where she survived Hurricane Katrina. Moving from the countryside to the cities has made her resilient to changes. Her parents have a big influence on her life – her tough and savvy father was a shrimp farm owner, a risky business with unpredictable incomes , and her meticulous mother who operated a restaurant taught her all about good hospitality.

Aside from her family business, Dee opened her own bistro in 2007, where she seeks to serve international gourmet food inspired from her travels, as well as authentic thai cuisine.

The contestants of the South Australian Best Jobs in the World competition have Monday marvelled at the rugged beauty of Kangaroo Island, said to be the best place in Australia to see wild animals.

American blogger Nick Tilley, 33, Canadian adventurer Greg Snell, 27, and Taiwanese social media expert Hsin-Hsuan Hsieh, 25, are all in the running to win their dream job as Wildlife Caretaker with Tourism Australia.

As part of their duties, the winner will spend time with the famous fauna of Kangaroo Island — home to thousands of kangaroos as well as koalas, wallabies, possums, echidnas and the elusive platypus.

On Monday, day three of the competition, the contestants practised their tour guide skills at the island’s famous Seal Bay, Flinders Chase National Park and Hansen Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.

They posed at the rugged and windswept Remarkable Rocks, gazed down at the stunning coastline from a helicopter, and came face-to- face with seals at sunset.

Tilley described the island as “a rugged wilderness, sculpted by nature and time.”

“South Australia is such a unique place, with wildlife unlike anywhere else in the world,” he said.

The competitors are currently undergoing a series of challenges and using social media to help sell the state to the rest of the world, before the big competition announcement on Friday, June 21.

While yesterday’s tour gave them just a slice of what Kangaroo Island has to offer, the winner will have the good part of a year to get to know the local secrets — the best places to walk among sea lions, swim with dolphins, or spy on elusive Leafy Sea Dragons amongst the weed.

Known as the wildlife sanctuary without fences, around 30 percent of the island is protected as parks — but it is also home to five-star resorts with an eco or food tourism bent.

One of the not-so-secret local treasures is Vivonne Bay, with turquoise waters and a long, curved sandy beach — rated number one out of 10,000 Australian beaches evaluated by Sydney University for things like water clarity and privacy.

Vivionne Bay is also home to the so-called Little Sahara with white sand dunes surrounded by bush, where thrill-seekers can climb to the top of razorback ridges and take the fast way down via sandboard.

On Tuesday, the last day of the competition, the Best Jobs finalists will continue their South Australian adventure, learning how to track an echidna and visiting Stokes Bay, a honey farm and winery, before travelling to Sydney for Friday’s results announcement.

Britain & Ireland’s Next Top Model 2013 contestants

Danielle Sandhu
Hometown: Retford
Height: 5ft 9
Dress size: 8
Bra Size: 32D
Favourite Feature: Stomach
Worst Feature: Feet

You may recognise Danielle from the show two years ago, when she reached boot camp and Elle saw something in her. She’s back for the ninth series, and says she’s always been drawn to modelling because she likes the idea of getting into character.
What makes her stand out from the other girls? Her athleticism
Danielle is a keen footballer and boxer, like role model Adriana Lima.
She also thinks that being half Indian, her ethnicity gives her an element of mystery, and hopefully an edge.

The B.C. Teacher Regulation Branch has reprimanded a Vancouver teacher after she duct-taped her students’ mouths in an effort to keep them quiet.

Margo Fowler, a math teacher at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School, is rated as a top-notch educator on the popular website RateMyTeachers.com, where students describe her as “helpful,” “entertaining” and “Just. Plain. Awesome.”

But documents posted on the Teacher Regulation Branch’s website say Fowler was involved in three separate incidents where she broke professional standards by duct-taping the mouths of her students.

In one case, Fowler gave a talkative Grade 8 student an ultimatum to go to the school office or have his mouth duct-taped shut. He opted for the latter, and a friend then posted his picture on Facebook.

The second incident involved a Grade 10 student, who Fowler also warned to be quiet or face the tape, before duct-taping his mouth shut.

The final incident saw a Grade 8 student, who was “talking loudly” in Fowler’s class, duct-tape his own mouth shut on her orders, the consent resolution agreement said.

The branch has issued Fowler a reprimand citing professional misconduct.

AN ITALIAN court has convicted the designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana of tax evasion.

The pair were found guilty of failing to declare 1 billion euros ($1.4 billion) in income tax to authorities. The court sentenced them both to one year and eight months in jail.

Prosecutors argued that the pair had evaded taxes on income of 416 million euros each and 200 million euros through a Luxembourg-based company. The statute of limitations ran out on a charge of misrepresenting income.

The designers have denied the charges.

Two years ago, a judge threw out a tax evasion and fraud case against the pair, whose label Dolce&Gabbana is a Milan fashion mainstay. Italy’s high court later ruled the designers could be prosecuted for tax evasion, though not for fraud.

The Miss Universe competition will be held in Russia for the first time in its history.

Moscow’s 7,000 capacity Crocus City Hall will host the pageant on Nov. 9, 2013, the venue said in a press release.

Donald Trump, who owns the competition, made the announcement live on air during the transmission of the Miss USA event in Las Vegas on Sunday.

Women from 90 countries will compete for the title, watched by more than a billion viewers worldwide.

At a press conference following the announcement Donald Trump spoke of his joy at the fact that the competition will be in Russia. “I am convinced that it will be the biggest and best Miss Universe that you have ever seen,” he said.

Miss Universe began in 1952 as a local “bathing beauty” competition set up by a swimwear company in Long Beach, California. Trump, who has owned the competition since 1996, now runs it in partnership with U.S. television network NBC.

It should not be confused with the Miss World pageant, which began a year earlier in 1951 as part of the Festival of Britain.

The one and only Russian winner of the event was Oksana Fedorova in 2002.

Olivia Culpo, an American, is the current holder of the title.

June 15, 2013                10:40 AM ET

The mother of a 19-year-old fatal crash victim says her son was trying to turn his life around when he died early Saturday in Chelsea, Que.

Police in the Outaouais say four 19-year-olds were travelling in a vehicle along Highway 105 near Loretta Way when the driver lost control as she tried to manoeuvre along a curve in the road.

The vehicle, which was heading north, flew off the highway at about 3:30 a.m., about a 15-minute drive north of Ottawa.

Jonathan Thompson died at the scene, according to his mother Marie-Chantal. The driver, a woman, was sent to the Hull hospital with non-life threatening injuries after she was arrested at the scene, police say.

The driver is currently in serious condition.

The mother said she was in shock Saturday as she visited the site where her son died. She said Thompson had recently returned to high school seeking to turn his life around.

Crash happened at dangerous curve

Nearby residents said the section where the driver lost control is commonly difficult to navigate.

“That’s a bad curve. We’ve had a lot of accidents here and it’s mostly because of people going too fast,” said Valérie Richard.

Jean-Pierre Dubé, who also lives near the crash scene, said incidents such as Saturday’s crash have been “inevitable” due to speeding vehicles, adding one flipped and crashed last weekend. He said the speed limit needs to be lowered in the area from the current limit of 70 kilometres per hour.

Alcohol and speed remain possible factors in the crash and charges could be laid against the driver, who gave a blood sample.

A section of Highway 105 was closed for several hours as police investigated the crash scene but it reopened at about noon Saturday.

A former McDonald’s worker in Pennsylvania is suing a franchiser owner saying she was required to receive her wages through a debit card that charged fees, resulting in some hourly employees receiving less than minimum wage.

Natalie Gunshannon, a single mother, 27, said she and other workers were paid through a JPMorgan Chase Payroll Card, which has a $1.50 fee for ATM withdrawals, a $10 inactivity fee after 90 days, and a 75 cent online payment fee per transaction and other fees.

Gunshannon, who filed a lawsuit in the Luzerne County Court of Common Pleas, is hoping to have her case certified as a class action on behalf of the other employees who were paid with the Payroll card.

“It’s a violation of the law,” said Gunshannon’s attorney, Michael Cefalo. “They’re entitled to a choice to be paid in cash or check. Fees connected to this debit card which employees have to pay to get their wages which is unfair.”

Gunshannon said she asked her employer if she could receive her wages through direct deposit at her credit union, which she said did not accept payments through the payroll card. She is suing under the Pennsylvania Wage Payment and Collection Act for unjust enrichment.

Franchisees Albert and Carol Mueller provided a statement to ABC News, which read: “We value our employees and everything they do for our organization. We are committed to providing them the best possible work environment so they can deliver the fast, reliable service that our customers expect. We are aware of this matter. But at this time, we have not seen a copy of the complaint. For this reason, it would be inappropriate for us to comment further.”

Suzanne Martindale, staff attorney with Consumers Union, said some employers are motivated to pay wages with these payroll cards to cut the cost of distributing paper checks.

“Employers are always looking for ways to cut costs,” she said. “There is incentive for employers to offer these cards but in some cases, they don’t negotiate with the payroll card provider over fees.”

Gunshannon, who studied massage therapy, began working as an hourly employee at a McDonald’s in Shavertown, Pa., on April 24 after she was unable to find jobs in her preferred field.

“There are no jobs in Luzerne County,” she said.

She was paid about $7.44 an hour and worked 30 to 37 hours as a part-time worker.

Pennsylvania’s basic minimum rate is $7.25 an hour.

After she was issued a JP Morgan Chase Payroll card, she requested a paper check from her employer.

A manager allegedly told her, “If you don’t activate the card, there is no way for us to pay you,” according to the court complaint.

McDonald’s managers and assistant managers “have the option to receive wage compensation by way of direct deposit, thus avoiding fees,” the complaint states.

“McDonald’s does not provide a choice for hourly employees to receive their justly earned wages through a bank check, cash or direct deposit,” the lawsuit said.

Gunshannon said the people with whom she worked were “nice” but she quit after three weeks for not receiving her wages as requested. Gunshannon said she is looking for jobs at other restaurants or home health work.

“This isn’t something personal. I would just like to be paid for my work,” she said.

However, some people say payroll debit cards can be beneficial to the unbanked or underbanked.

“Payroll debit cards offer real benefits for workers who are accustomed to cashing paychecks at check cashers, including meaningful cost savings, greater security and the convenience of an electronic payment option,” said Timothy Flacke, executive director of the nonprofit Doorways to Dreams (D2D) Fund, which makes financial products for low- and moderate-income consumers. “Of course, many people do not like to have a product chosen for them, especially when there are fees involved.”

Montreal’s mayor has been arrested by Quebec’s anti-corruption unit on fraud charges, months after his predecessor resigned amid corruption allegations.

Michael Applebaum faces 14 charges, including defrauding government.

In February, anti-corruption police raided city hall and the offices of a borough that Mr Applebaum once represented.

The arrest is the latest in a string of scandals surrounding Canadian local politics.

In the neighbouring province of Ontario, Toronto Mayor Rob Ford denies allegations that he appeared in a video smoking crack cocaine.

Mr Applebaum, Montreal’s first Anglophone mayor in 100 years, was arrested early on Monday at his home.

“The corruption and collusion will no longer be tolerated,” Robert Lafreniere, head of the anti-corruption unit, told reporters. “No-one is above the law.”

Mr Applebaum entered Montreal’s city hall after former mayor Gerald Tremblay resigned amid allegations relating to illegal donations. Mr Tremblay denies all wrongdoing.

Mr Applebaum began his term as interim mayor in November, vowing to fight corruption

The charges against him stem from alleged acts before he became city mayor, during the years when he served as borough mayor, 2006-11.

Officials offered few details, but said the charges are related to real estate projects in Montreal.

Two officials with ties to Mr Applebaum’s borough, Cote-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grace, were also arrested by anti-corruption police on Monday.

Several Quebec leaders are calling for the mayor to resign.

His arrest comes a month after the mayor of nearby Laval was also detained on corruption charges.

A Texas mother’s determination to keep her family out of danger drove her to battle an alleged carjacker until he fled from her minivan — only to be struck by her vehicle as she tried to “stop him so he didn’t hurt anybody else,” the woman said.

While Dorothy Baker and her 2-year-old and 5-year-old sons were shopping Friday at a CVS in Baytown, Texas, a man identified as Ismael Martinez allegedly hid out in her unlocked van, police said.

When the family got back into the car, Baker said Martinez “popped up out of the backseat and said that if I didn’t want my kids to get hurt, that I would do exactly what he said.”

Martinez, 54, allegedly pulled a knife on Baker while she was driving and demanded she stop at an ATM for money, she said.

When she refused, Martinez allegedly became violent, she said.

Baker said she fought back, refusing to compromise the safety of her children.

“She’s got a cut that goes across her chest, and she grabbed the knife and he bit her hand,” Baker’s husband, Charles Flugence said.

“I took my fist and I hit him in the face, and I told him to get out of my car,” Baker said.

Baker intentionally drove her van into a telephone pole in hopes of sending Martinez through the front windshield, according to the Baytown Police Department crime report.

Police said she managed to dial 911 while she grappled with the suspect in hopes that a dispatcher might hear what was going on in the car and find a way to help, ABC station KTRK-TV in Houston reported.

“I thought, ‘If you swerve and hit the pole, he’s not wearing a seatbelt, he’ll go through the windshield or at least hit his head, and you can stop him. You can do something to make sure that he doesn’t hurt your kids,'” Baker told KTRK-TV. “That’s all I was thinking of really, was just to get him away from my kids.”

Police said Martinez eventually jumped out of the van and tried to flee. But before Baker knew it, she had run her car into him.

“I didn’t mean to run him over,” she said. “I was just trying to stop him so he didn’t hurt anybody else.”

Martinez was airlifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston with serious injuries after the alleged attack. He is expected to face felony charges once he is discharged.

Meanwhile, Baytown residents have rallied around Baker’s bravery.

“She was trying to protect herself and her kids. I would do the same thing,” resident Joyce Sparks said.

But Baker said she is just glad her family is safe.

“You don’t come after people with kids,” she said. “I told him he messed with the wrong witch.”

West Hills stabbing

June 16, 2013             9:42 p.m.

Los Angeles police continued to search Sunday for a 46-year-old elementary school teacher who they said stabbed his estranged wife and left her to die on a quiet residential street in West Hills as neighbors rushed to her side.

Michael Rodney Kane forced his way into a home in the 7100 block of Deveron Ridge Road, where his wife, Michelle Ann Kane, 43, was staying with friends after he acted erratically, vandalized his family’s house and violated a temporary restraining order, police said Sunday.

After scuffling with the homeowner and cutting the man’s hand with a knife, Kane allegedly stabbed his estranged wife multiple times about 7:50 a.m. Saturday before she collapsed in the street, police said.

Neighbors who heard the commotion stepped outside to find the woman on the pavement, mortally wounded.

“My son and my wife tried to stop the bleeding,” said Loni Specter, 63, who lives next door to where Kane and her children were staying. “Both of them did what they could, but she was pretty much dead…. It was a nightmare.”

Kane’s two young children, and two from the family with whom they were staying, hid in a bathroom during the attack, neighbor Roy Bernard said the homeowners told him. The wife of the injured man huddled with them, he said.

“She said, ‘No noise. No talking. Stay quiet,'” Bernard said.

The woman’s husband, who knew both of the Kanes, told Bernard that he at first thought he could talk Michael Kane out of doing anything rash and then shouted to Michelle Kane to “run as fast as you can out the front door and don’t stop,” as he fought with him, Bernard said.

“Unfortunately, her husband caught her and he butchered her,” he said. “It’s a tragedy.”

Michelle Kane was pronounced dead at the scene in the hilly, well-kept neighborhood of mostly 1960s tract homes, many of them occupied by their original owners. No one was home Sunday at the house where the killing occurred.

Hours earlier, Michelle Kane, a paralegal and notary public, had gone to the Los Angeles Police Department‘s Topanga Station to report that her estranged husband had vandalized the home they once shared and had violated a temporary restraining order she had obtained, Sgt. Al Flores said Sunday.

“She came in here the night before and said that they were going through a divorce and that she was concerned, that she was worried,” Flores said.

Among other things, Michelle Kane told police that her estranged husband had been uncharacteristically irrational lately and was using drugs, Flores said.

He said one of the station’s officers spent more than an hour with Michelle Kane that night. Flores said he could not discuss specifics of their conversation because of the pending investigation, but he defended the LAPD’s handling of the situation and said it underscores the difficulties of dealing with domestic violence.

“I believe that everything that we could possibly do for her was done,” Flores said.

It was unclear Sunday what triggered the attack or when the couple had split.

In June 2012, they filed a Chapter 7 bankruptcy proceeding to get out from under their debts, including $166,000 owed to credit card companies, court records show. The bankruptcy was discharged three months later, giving the couple a fresh financial start.

In a declaration, the Kanes said their problems stemmed from the 2002 purchase of a new West Hills home that required “landscaping, appliances and various other improvements” paid for with credit cards. When the housing market crashed, it also doomed their plan to tap their home equity to pay the bills, they wrote.

“We didn’t use the cards to buy expensive toys or take extravagant trips around the world,” they wrote. “The charges were for our general living expenses, such as mortgage payments, auto payments, food, insurance and utilities.”

Michael Kane, a teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District, said he had also spent “a significant amount” on school supplies, and gifts to “incentivize” his students.

“And because I taught in an underprivileged area, I even bought some of the students clothing when I noticed some students coming to class wearing the same thing every day,” he wrote.

Police described Kane as 5 feet 10 and 175 pounds. He was last seen driving a silver, gray or mint green 1999 Chrysler 300M with California license plate 4HGP487.

Most of the competitors will be quickly sent home. The top 16 were picked by preliminary judges through competitions and interviews during the week before the telecast.

Celebrity judges including fashion designer Betsey Johnson, “Biggest Loser” star Bob Harper and “Wait Wait … Don’t Tell Me” personality Mo Rocca will then pick the top eight after the swimsuit competition. The judge panel will narrow it down to a top 4 after the evening gown portion.

A RISING Sydney basketball star is in serious doubt for the world championships after being shot in the leg by party gate-crashers.

NBL player Mirko Djeric was shot in the thigh after a street fight erupted outside a house on Grainger Avenue in Mount Pritchard shortly after midnight on Saturday.

The 18-year-old, who was this year selected to play for the Illawarra Hawks in the NBL, was preparing to play in the under-19s world championships to be held in the Czech Republic later this month.

Investigating police are hunting seven men of Asian, Pacific Island and Middle Eastern appearance.

A police spokesperson said a party was underway at the house at the time of the shooting.

Neighbours told Channel 7 they heard gunfire but originally thought it was a firecracker.

They soon realised a fight had broken out and the NBL player had been shot.
Djeric was rushed to hospital with a wound to his right thigh. The injury is not life-threatening.

Police from Cabramatta Local Area Command established a crime scene and investigations are continuing.

In February, Djeric was involved at a training program at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra when the Bankstown junior received a call up from the injury plagued Hawks.

The up and coming point guard played with a Serbian squad in Western Sydney before going on to represent NSW in several teams.

Djeric player in the Australian under 17s team which won a silver medal at the 2012 U17 FIBA World Championships.

In April, it was reported that Djeric was unsure whether he would continue his stint with the Hawks or relocate to play for a team in Serbia.
