The frantic search for a missing 13-year-old in Utah came to a close overnight after police found the teenager who disappeared with no cellphone, shoes or even a coat at a local Walmart. But what looks like a case of a teen runaway is being called suspicious by police.

Brooklyn Gittins’ family said the young girl went to bed Tuesday night wearing her pajamas. When they awoke, she was gone, and even her trademark eyeglasses were left behind. She contacted her family late Thursday night.

Lt. Justin Hoyal of Salt Lake Unified Police told ABCNews.com that she is safe at home now.

“We believe that she did leave her house on Tuesday evening, and somebody picked her up and harbored her for the last two and a half days. We’re going to investigate,” he said. “She’s 13 years old, and for someone to hold her is wrong. We’ll do everything to find the person and bring [that person] to justice.”

Brooklyn was unharmed and was still wearing her gray T-shirt and black pajama pants. She had no shoes or coat, and was not wearing her glasses.

“Brooklyn called her grandmother about 11:30 p.m. and told her that she was at the Walmart in South Jordan,” Salt Lake police said. “Her grandmother then called Utah police department. We responded to the Walmart and located Brooklyn.

“The disappearance is suspicious and we are still investigating where she went and who she was with.”

Police say there were no signs of forced entry in her home outside Salt Lake City, and none of the straight-A student’s friends had heard from her after she vanished.

“There are elements of this case that are extremely concerting. We are hopeful that, however, that this is simply a runaway,” police said Thursday.

Brooklyn has gone missing before. Her family says she ran away last summer, but soon returned

More than 500 volunteers, as well as dog teams, fanned out Thursday to search the area near Brooklyn’s home. But authorities sent the volunteers home overnight, saying the storm that brought all the heavy snow was too dangerous.

7:44 AM EST                Friday January 4, 2013

A local police chief is asking a question that troubles many following an alleged rape in this small Ohio city.

“Why didn’t somebody stop it?” said Steubenville police Chief William McCafferty. “You simply don’t do that … It’s not done.”

But what the police chief and many in this town felt was unthinkable has been done, authorities said. And they say they have videos, pictures and chilling tweets about the alleged rape that has shaken this city.

The images and social media messages are at the heart of criminal charges against two high school football players accused of sexually assaulting an underage teenage girl during a series of end-of-summer parties in August.

Both boys are charged with rape. One is also accused of “illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material.”

Their trial before an Ohio juvenile court judge is scheduled for February 13.

CNN is not identifying the girl, who is a juvenile, in accordance with its policy not to release the names of alleged rape victims.

The alleged attackers also are juveniles, but they have been identified by a judge in court, by defense attorneys and in newspapers and other media reports as Trent Mays and Ma’lik Richmond, both 16.

The case has attracted the attention of bloggers and even Anonymous, a loosely organized cooperative of activist hackers.

Anonymous has released information about the town and the football team and is threatening to release more unless everyone comes clean about what happened that August night.

“The town of Steubenville has been good at keeping this quiet and their star football team protected,” an Anonymous member wearing the group’s trademark Guy Fawkes mask says in a video posted to the group’s LocalLeaks website.

The organization, he says, will not allow “a group of young men who turn to rape as a game or sport get the pass because of athletic ability or small-town luck.”

The girl was assaulted the night of Saturday, August 11, and early the next morning, according to authorities.

Involved, according to authorities, were members of the Steubenville High School football team, popular among many in the small, down-on-its-luck town along the banks of the Ohio River. A website dedicated to the team counts down the seconds to their return next season.

Police got involved on August 14, when the girl’s mother came forward to report the alleged assault, according to McCafferty, the police chief. The family provided a zip drive showing a Twitter page, possibly with a photo, the chief told CNN.

A kidnapping charge was dropped by the juvenile court judge at a probable cause hearing last October, said McCafferty and Mays’s attorney, Adam Nemann.

“My client asserts his innocence, and he looks forward to his day in court,” said Nemann.

At an October hearing, attorney Walter Madison, who is representing Richmond, raised questions about the alleged victim’s actions that night, according to CNN affiliate WTOV.

On August 27, the same day authorities charged the two defendants, Jefferson County authorities asked for help from the attorney general’s office in investigating and prosecuting the case. Interviews and witness statements led to the arrests, McCafferty said.

“What we want is to be able to show the citizens of Jefferson County that everything that can be done in this case is being done, and if that means eliciting the help of these people from the attorney general’s office, then that’s what we want to do in this case,” county prosecutor Jane Hanlin told WTOV at the time.

By that time, images and messages from that night had made their way around social media.

Crime blogger Alexandria Goddard, a former Steubenville resident, discovered and preserved many of the messages, at least some of which are now in the hands of authorities. She first spotted the story in the small town’s newspaper and started looking into the situation on a hunch that the highly regarded football team’s members were getting special treatment at the expense of the victim.

“When I first came across the article, I just felt like — because it was involving football players, and there is a culture there that football is very important, that there was probably a little more to this story than what the local media was reporting,” she told CNN Thursday. “So I started doing my own research.”

One image circulated online and posted on a website maintained by Anonymous showed the girl, dressed in a T-shirt and blue shorts, her body limp, being held hand and foot by two males who appear to be teenagers.

Text messages posted to social networking sites that night seemed to brag about the incident, calling the girl “sloppy,” making references to rape and suggesting even that she had been urinated on, according to Goddard. CNN has not been able to establish whether this is true.

In one 12-minute video, posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, one teenager makes joke after joke about the girl’s condition, saying she must have died because she didn’t move during one assault.

Anonymous and others in the video identified the teen by a name that doesn’t match the two who were charged, but CNN cannot independently confirm his identity.

“Is it really rape because you don’t know if she wanted to or not,” the teenager says on the video. “She might have wanted to. That might have been her final wish.”

Other male voices can be heard off-camera, laughing and talking about the alleged assault. McCafferty said he cannot say who shot that video.

“The subject in that video was interviewed. He wasn’t charged,” the chief told CNN. “The attorney general’s office has all this. It appears to me after I watched the video he was intoxicated.”

The New York Times reported that a cell phone photo from that night shows the girl naked on the floor.

Roughly 11 cell phones and a couple of iPads were seized during the investigation, said McCafferty, adding he was not involved in retrieving evidence from the electronic devices.

McCafferty said “there was evidence on some of the phones.”

A special unit with the attorney general’s office is doing the work, the chief said.

McCafferty said there was a report of a video showing the alleged attack, but authorities don’t have it or know whether it exists.

The attorney for the girl’s family told CNN that the girl is in counseling and is “doing as well as one can expect.”

“She’s trying to go about her life right now, which is difficult because of all the media attention,” said family attorney Robert Fitzsimmons. “It’s as if she’s just flown into this barnstorm. She’ll make it through.”

The case is now in the hands of special prosecutors under Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine.

DeWine said that the case is being aggressively prosecuted and remains under active investigation.

“We want to make sure that there is no stone left unturned,” he said. “We want to make sure that everyone in the community really feels that justice has been done and that all the information does in fact come out.”

The parents of one teenager named on Goddard’s blog sued her for defamation and sought to have those who anonymously commented on the blog about the case publicly identified. The family has since dropped the lawsuit, according to court documents.

Meanwhile, Anonymous says it is collecting detailed information about the personal affairs of football boosters and others in the town of 18,000 who the group claims may have helped cover up the attack. It’s also planning a protest “to help those who have been victimized by the football team or other regimes.”

The group has already hacked the website of the local football fansite and says it will release the information if people don’t come forward to help the investigation.

“My heart goes out to the victim,” DeWine said. “The victim continues to be victimized every time something shows up on the Internet. There’s nothing I can do about that, but it is very, very sad.”

The whole issue has placed a stigma on Steubenville, which some feel is not justified.

“The buzz that keeps coming about is that Steubenville is a bad place, things are being covered up, more people should be arrested and I feel that’s all unjustly so,” said Jerry Barilla, a longtime store owner. “Because I think that to condemn an entire city for something that happened is not right. To condemn an entire school and all the kids that go there for something that took place among a few students is still not right.”

1:58 PM EST             Wednesday December 12, 2012

Investigators identified a 22-year-old as the gunman responsible for shooting three people — two of them fatally — at a mall in suburban Portland, Oregon.

Sheriff’s investigators believe that Jacob Tyler Roberts acted alone in what they described as a “heinous, horrible, tragic crime.”

There were no immediate answers to the questions the community of Happy Valley had after the Wednesday shooting at the Clackamas Town Center: Roberts’ motive remained unknown, and there was no apparent connection between the shooter and his victims, officials said.

The man and woman who were fatally shot were Cindy Ann Yuille, 54, and Steven Mathew Forsyth, 45.

The gunman hastily moved through the Macy’s at the mall and toward the food court, located on the second floor, where he opened fire, the sheriff’s office said.

The shooter then went down a corridor and out a back hallway that led downstairs, where he is believed to have shot himself.

Roberts was wearing a load bearing vest — which many confused for a bulletproof vest — and was armed with a semi-automatic rifle.

The rifle jammed at one point, but started working again, the sheriff said.

The injured woman was identified as Kristina Shevchenko by officials at the Oregon Health and Science University Hospital. She remains in serious condition, the hospital said.

The families of the other victims, Yuille and Forsyth, provided brief comments through authorities, but asked for privacy as they mourn their loved ones.

Yuille was remembered as a “everybody’s friend” who put others first.

Forsyth was the father of two children with a great sense of humor and a “zest” for life, his family said.

Mall patrons were paralyzed during the shooting, as shoppers had no clue where the gunman would fire next.

Entire swaths of Clackamas Town Center turned silent. The only sounds were the blasts from the man’s rifle and the ensuing screams. Even the mall’s Santa dropped to the ground.

“I thought I was going to die,” mall employee David Moran said. “The gunshots were so loud, it was very scary. … Kids were crying. Parents were crying, too.”

Kira Rowland was holding her 6-month-old baby in Macy’s when the shots rang out.

“I threw my baby into the stroller and just started running, because everybody was screaming and everybody just started to run,” she said.

Inside Clackamas Town Center

The gunman wore a hockey mask and jogged through Macy’s wielding a rifle, a woman told CNN affiliate KOIN.

As some panicked customers bolted for the exits, others ducked under store counters or hid behind racks of clothing.

The suspect announced aloud that “I am the shooter” as he ran through Macy’s, said witness and store employee Austin Patty.

The shooter carried a rifle “like you would see in a video game.”

As the shooting started, Patty ran out of the store, warning everyone in his path that there was a shooter on the loose and ordering them out of the store.

The sheriff’s office confirmed that a rifle and a mask were recovered from the scene.

Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage to get a better picture of what happened.

The Clackamas Town Center is located in Happy Valley, Oregon, a suburb of Portland.

Erin Quackenbush-Baker was in a vulnerable position — in the middle of the mall at a kiosk with her grandmother and three young children.

“My 5-year-old was covering her ears and crying. I was frantic to find a place to run, and I looked back (at) my son in my stroller and glass is falling over us,” she said. “The shots were getting closer, and it sounded like he was getting closer.”

“I felt like sitting ducks, where we were.”

During a brief halt in the gunfire, a man helped rush the family into a nearby Sephora store. That’s where Quackenbush-Baker and her children hid for an hour, “waiting to see if we were going to be shot or not.”

As word spread that the shooter was moving from store to store, customers at Sears burst into tears, Christina Fisher told KOIN.

“We were told to stand in a group by the top of the escalators and stay away from the windows out of the aisle. … We stood there for probably a good 20 minutes,” she said. “All of the sudden, somebody came through with a radio, yelling, ‘Get down!’ ”

As the melee unfolded, some customers watched television news reports about the shooting from inside the Sears entertainment center, Tylor Pedersen told affiliate KGW.

Antonio Charro spotted a wounded woman near a cell phone store and tried to help, but to no avail.

“She had apparently been shot in the chest, and I couldn’t get her turned over to help her,” said Charro, who had been shopping at the mall with his daughters. “There was no one around. She wasn’t breathing.”

Clackamas County Sheriff Craig Roberts said about 10,000 people were in the mall at the time.

No law enforcement officers fired any shots when they arrived, sheriff’s Sgt. Adam Phillips said.

The 1.4 million-square-foot mall will remain closed Wednesday as investigators look for clues about the attack.

Rowland said she’s grateful she got distracted while shopping and didn’t venture farther into the mall.

“I think if I hadn’t stopped to smell that perfume, that maybe me and my baby wouldn’t be here today.”

A group of Surrey teens and their parents are appealing to their school district for mercy after being punished for a graduation prank.

The eight Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary School Grade 12 students streaked through their school cafeteria — an annual tradition.

“I just had shoes and Mexican wrestling mask on,” said streaker Dwight Lilly, whose older brother pulled the same prank at the school a few years ago.

Fellow streaker Griffin Steele says they thought they’d be suspended, but instead the prank resulted in the boys being banned from their grad ceremony.

“And I was like, ‘I’m an only child so my parents only get to come see one person graduate ever in their life. Isn’t there anything we can do to fix this?'”

Steele says the school could have come up with another form of punishment.

“They could have given us a suspension — I’d be fine with that,” he said.

“I didn’t mind writing my tests later cause we suffer for it cause you don’t get to write your test with the rest of your class — it’s a little harder. I think that’s punishment enough. It’s not like we hurt anybody, we didn’t cause massive damage, and then you’re going to take away something that somebody only gets to experience once? It’s ridiculous.”

The Surrey School District says no specific rule governs grad pranks, but the punishment is not unheard of.

Andrine Bakkene will be sorely missed by all her family and friends

The families of passionate conservationist Guro Vartdal Havoll, budding musician Aleksander Aas Eriksen, 16, and Christopher Perreau are still awaiting confirmation from police as to whether their loved ones were killed.

Aleksander Aas Eriksen

Sixteen-year-old Aleksander Aas Eriksen is one of many who are still unaccounted for

Christopher Perreau

Another teen feared dead in the Utoya shootings is Christopher Perreau

As the identities of the victims continue to be revealed, tens of thousands of Norwegians who reject Breivik’s paranoid ideology gathered in central Oslo.

They mourned the victims as they lay thousands of flowers and light candles around the city.

Police believe 32-year-old Breivik acted alone, despite his grand claims in a 1,500-page manifesto that he belonged to a modern group of crusaders.

Anders Behring Breivik in court

April 16, 2012         05:34 am ET

The right-wing fanatic behind a bomb-and-shooting massacre that killed 77 people in Norway admitted to the “acts” on Monday but pleaded not guilty to criminal charges, saying he was acting in self-defense.

Anders Behring Breivik defiantly rejected the authority of the court as he went on trial for the July 22 attacks that shocked the peaceful nation and jolted the image of terrorism in Europe.

Dressed in a dark suit and sporting a thin beard along his jawline, Breivik smiled as a guard removed his handcuffs in the crowded court room. The 33-year-old then flashed a closed-fist salute, before shaking hands with prosecutors and court officials.

“I don’t recognize Norwegian courts because you get your mandate from the Norwegian political parties who support multiculturalism,” Breivik said in his first comments to the court.

He remained stone-faced and motionless as prosecutor Inga Bejer Engh read his indictment on terror and premeditated murder charges, with descriptions of how each victim died. Eight were killed in a bombing in Oslo’s government district and 69 in a shooting massacre at the left-leaning Labor Party’s youth camp on Utoya island outside the capital.

“I admit to the acts, but not criminal guilt,” he told the court, and said he had acted in self-defense.

Breivik also said he doesn’t recognize the authority of Judge Wenche Elisabeth Arntzen, because he said she is friends with the sister of former Norwegian Prime Minister and Labor Party leader Gro Harlem Brundtland.

The anti-Muslim militant described himself as a writer, currently working from prison, when asked by the judge for his employment status.

Breivik has said the attacks were necessary to protect Norway from being taken over by Muslims. He claims he targeted the government headquarters in Oslo and the youth camp to strike against the left-leaning political forces he blames for allowing immigration in Norway.

While there is a principle of preventive self-defense in Norwegian law, it doesn’t apply to Breivik’s case, said Jarl Borgvin Doerre, a legal expert, who has written a book about the concept.

“It is obvious that it has nothing to do with preventive self-defense,” Doerre told The Associated Press.

The key issue to be resolved during the 10-week trial is the state of Breivik’s mental health, which will decide whether he is sent to prison or to psychiatric care.

If deemed mentally competent, he would face a maximum prison sentence of 21 years or an alternate custody arrangement under which the sentence is prolonged for as long as an inmate is deemed a danger to society.

Police sealed off the streets around the court building, where journalists, survivors and relatives of victims watched the proceedings in a 200-seat courtroom built specifically for the trial.

Thick glass partitions were put up to separate the defendant from victims and their families, many of whom are worried that Breivik will use the trial to promote his extremist political ideology. In a manifesto he published online before the attacks, Breivik wrote that “patriotic resistance fighters” should use trials “as a platform to further our cause.”

Norway’s NRK television will broadcast parts of the trial, but it is not allowed to show Breivik’s testimony.

He had told investigators he is a resistance fighter in a far-right militant group modeled after the Knights Templar — a Western Christian order that fought during the crusades — but police have found no trace of the organization and say he acted alone.

“In our opinion such a network does not exist,” Prosecutor Svein Holden told the court.

Anxious to prove he is not insane, he has called right-wing extremists and radical Islamists to testify during the trial, to show that there are others who share his view of clashing civilizations.

Breivik surrendered to police 1 hour and 20 minutes after he arrived on Utoya. The police response was slowed by a series of mishaps, including the lack of an operating police helicopter and the breakdown of an overloaded boat carrying a commando team to the island.

It’s official! Welcome to the world, baby Blue Ivy Carter.

Reports that Beyonce and husband Jay-Z welcomed their daughter, Blue, were confirmed Monday when the couple released an announcement (via E! Online’s Twitter account).

Hello Hello Baby Blue! We are happy to announce the arrival of our beautiful daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, born on Saturday, January 7, 2012. Her birth was emotional and extremely peaceful, we are in heaven … it was the best experience of both our lives.”

The couple also revealed that Blue weighed in at 7 pounds and was delivered naturally, not by a C-section as previously reported.

The fiercely private couple’s announcement comes as a bit of a shock, considering it took years for them to confirm their marriage. Their statement also clears up any confusion over the child’s name and that it is, in fact, Blue Ivy — and not the other way around.

Earlier Monday, Jay-Z released a touching song, “Glory,” about his new darling daughter, with Blue allegedly making her recording debut at the end of the tune.

Brandon McInerney was a scrawny 14-year-old from a broken home when he was accused of gunning down a gay classmate in front of stunned students at a Ventura County middle school.

Three years later – and six months shy of legally becoming an adult – McInerney is going on trial on a charge of first-degree murder in the killing of 15-year-old Larry King. If convicted, he faces up to life in prison.

Opening statements are slated for Tuesday at a courthouse in the San Fernando Valley after a judge changed the venue.

Larry’s death has roiled gay-rights advocates and parents in Oxnard, a city about 60 miles northwest of Los Angeles, where the shooting occurred in February 2008. They wondered why school officials hadn’t done more to stop the harassment toward Larry by students, including McInerney. Larry’s family sued the school district, among two dozen defendants, for failing to protect the teen.

The conflict between the two boys, who both had troubled upbringings, didn’t seem out-of-place for teens coping with adolescence. There were taunts, teasing and on at least one occasion, a scuffle between Larry and McInerney, who purportedly tried to get others to beat up Larry.

What made the discord different from routine bullying is how Larry stood up for himself.

The day before the shooting, one of McInerney’s friends told authorities that Larry uttered the words “I love you” as he passed McInerney in a hallway, according to court documents filed by prosecutors.

The friend said McInerney told him he was “going to get a gun and shoot (Larry),” according to court papers. One of Larry’s friends claimed McInerney told her, “Say goodbye to your friend Larry, because you’re never going to see him again.”

The following day, as the boys sat in a computer lab, McInerney drew a .22-caliber gun from his sweatshirt and shot Larry in the back of the head.

McInerney “then stood up as Larry collapsed to the floor, looked around at his astonished classmates and delivered a second coup-de-grace shot into the back of Larry’s head,” prosecutor Maeve Fox wrote in court documents.

White supremacist materials were found in McInerney’s bedroom, including books and drawings of swastikas. McInerney didn’t attend a school field trip to the Museum of Tolerance, the educational arm of the human rights organization the Simon Wiesenthal Center, court records showed.

At a preliminary hearing last year, a police detective testified that Larry’s sexuality was an affront to McInerney’s ideology, and was probably the motive for the crime.

McInerney has pleaded not guilty to murder, lying in wait and a hate crime. Defense lawyer Scott Wippert has not returned calls and e-mails seeking comment. Wippert, however, told the Ventura County Star, that Larry sexually harassed McInerney and the shooting was committed in the heat of the moment.

Jurors will likely hear about the rough upbringings of both teens.

Larry, who told some people he was gay, lived at a center for abused and neglected children in the months before his death. Girls used him as a pawn to clear a table of boys at lunch, according to prosecutors. When Larry asked to sit with them, the boys got up and sometimes called him derogatory names.

McInerney came from an abusive household where his father, William McInerney, was sentenced for battery against his mother in 2000. William McInerney also was accused of shooting her in the elbow several months before his son was born.

He died in March 2009 of blunt-force head trauma at his home. The coroner ruled his death was accidental.

While McInerney will be tried as an adult because of the gravity of the alleged crime, some legal experts said the panel could be more lenient because of his youth.

“One, they recognize the younger you are, the more likely you are to be rehabilitated,” said Tom Lyon, a professor of law and psychology at the University of Southern California. “And two, they see more impulsiveness in their actions.”

Larry’s death has gained some resonance around the nation, where vigils have been held in his memory. Thousands of comments were left on Internet sites dedicated to him in the weeks following the shooting.

Lyon said the tragedy could foster discussion between adults and children about intolerance.

“This kind of case is something students can discuss to deal with prejudices and alleviate them,” he said.
