Cycling champion Ray Eden dies after Doncaster attack

A man who died after an alleged assault in Doncaster was a former international cycling champion, it has emerged.

Ray Eden, 42, won the national 100-mile time-trial cycling championship in 1995 at his second attempt, and represented Britain four times in stage racing.

He suffered head injuries in an incident near his home in Scawthorpe on 18 March and died three days later.

It is with the very greatest regret that Planet X/OnOne have to announce the death yesterday evening of Ray Eden following a tragic incident last Friday.
Ray was Planet X’s first employee and from that day in 1995 gave unstinting service and loyalty to our company. Ray had Planet X written through him and we are what we are only through Ray’s efforts over those years.

Ray’s love of cycling began in the 80s as a cycle messenger in London, but his huge chest and lungs, coupled with enormous thighs, led him to success in competitive cycling. In his first year Ray came second in the National 100 TT going on to later win that title as well as a points victory in the RAAS.

More recently Ray has been rowing with Doncaster Rowing Club, a sport in which he competed with his wife Gail and son Finn.

At this time all our thoughts are with Gail and Finn.

Although from Liverpool, and always proud of the fact, Ray was a ‘naturalised’ Yorkshireman, he was as we say ‘ a reet good ‘un’.

Ray, from all of us at Planet X, all our love and rest in peace.
