Swedish mountain climber Frederik Ericsson has been killed while on an expedition on the K2 mountain in the Himalayas, the Austrian Press Agency APA reported, citing officials in contact with the expedition.

The agency was reporting on the expedition involving Austrian climber Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner seeking to conquer the world’s second- tallest peak at 8,611 metres.

The Austrian weather service, which is in steady contact with the expedition, said the group reported that Ericsson had plunged more than 1,000 metres to his death.

Kaltenbrunner, 39, is regarded as one of the world’s best female mountain climbers but has failed several times to conquer the extremely difficult K2 on the Chinese-Pakistan border.

Otherwise she has conquered all the world’s 14 peaks of over 8,000 metres, a feat accomplished so far by just two other women.

Her group seeking this time to conquer the K2 consisted of two or three others who were now making their descent after Ericsson’s death, the APA report said.
