Jerry Sandusky‘s lawyers are leaning toward putting him on the stand in his own defense tomorrow, though the final decision has not yet been made, sources tell ABC News.

Sandusky would be called as the final witness for the defense, which is expected to rest its case on Wednesday. He is expected to deny that he ever had any sexual intent in his “horseplay” with the eight men who say they were sexually abused by him.

Prosecutor Joseph McGettigan, who has aggressively cross-examined defense witnesses this week, will have the opportunity to question Sandusky if they decide to put him on the stand.

Sandusky is charged with 51 counts of child sex abuse and could face life in prison if convicted.

His testimony could be a final chance for the defense, led by attorney Joseph Amendola, to place a reasonable doubt in the minds of the jurors. The case is expected to go to the jury of seven women and five men following closing arguments on Thursday.

Sandusky’s legal team had its strongest day yet today countering the claims of the eight accusers as Sandusky’s wife, Dottie, took the stand in his defense, and helped poke holes in the accounts of two lead investigators in the case against him.

A poised Dottie Sandusky testified that she never saw anything sexual occur between her husband and any of his accusers.

Mrs. Sandusky, who winked at her husband as she took the stand, said in a soft voice that they will have been married for 46 years in September.

In a patient grandmotherly style, she described most of her husband’s accusers as “very nice,” but remembered some as “conniving” and “very clingy.”

Sandusky, 68, is charged with 51 counts of sex abuse of 10 boys.

Dottie Sandusky bluntly denied the accusation of one accuser who told the court last week that during the Alamo Bowl she walked in on her husband trying to force the boy, now known as Victim 4, to perform oral sex on him. He claimed she interrupted her husband by asking, “What’s going on in there?”

Mrs. Sandusky’s version was quite different.

“I came in one day. It was like a bathroom and dressing area. They were standing there. I said ‘what’s going on’ because Jerry was very upset and we had asked (Victim 4) if he wanted to go to a luncheon which was $50, and he said he’d really like to go. And Jerry said OK, and it was the day of the luncheon and (Victim 4) wouldn’t go and Jerry knew I’d be very upset about spending the money.”

Dottie Sandusky told the court room that nothing seemed inappropriate about the exchange.

“They were just standing in little hallways, they were fully clothed,” she said.

Dottie Sandusky also rejected repeated testimony by the alleged victims that Jerry Sandusky would molest them at night in the family basement, an area they said his wife never went.

Mrs. Sandusky told the jury today that she and her husband had always shared a bed and that her husband would usually go to bed first. She also testified that she would often go down to the basement to get food out of a freezer there.

In response to the allegation from Victim 10 that he once yelled for help while being sexually abused in the basement while Dottie Sandusky was upstairs, Amendola asked whether someone on the ground floor would be able to hear someone yelling from the basement. “Yes,” she responded and added that her hearing was very good.

She also described Victim 4, who testified powerfully about the sex abuse he allegedly endured, as “demanding, and he was very conniving, and he wanted his way and didn’t listen a whole lot.”

Rupert Murdoch’s protégé Rebekah Brooks, who previously ran his British tabloids was arrested today in London in connection with the phone hacking scandal.

Brooks’ arrest comes as she “voluntarily attended a London police station to assist with their ongoing investigation,” according to a statement released on her behalf, The Associated Press reported.

Authorities are questioning Brooks on suspicion of conspiring phone hacking and on suspicion of corruption.

Brooks spokesman David Wilson told the AP that Brooks’ meeting with the police was arranged but “not aware she was going to be arrested.”

“Obviously this complicates matter greatly,” Wilson told the AP. “Her legal team will have to have discussions with the committee to see whether it would still be appropriate for her to attend.”

Brooks who had refused to resign over the scandal, stepped down from her post as head of Murdoch’s British newspaper division, News International on Friday.

Critical Time for Murdoch

Brooks’ arrest comes at a critical time for Murdoch.

On Tuesday, British lawmakers are expected to grill the media baron when he testifies in front of Parliament.

Each passing day has brought new revelation in this scandal, and the shockwaves are quickly spreading across Murdoch’s sprawling empire, which includes television and newspaper properties spanning the globe, and a key stake in the U.S.In turn, Murdoch has had to do some unprecedented damage control.

“I was appalled to find out what had happened and I apologized and I have nothing further to say,” said Murdoch.

On Friday, Murdoch apologized to the family of Milly Dowler, a teen murdered in 2002.

Earlier this month, it was revealed the girl’s voicemail had been allegedly hacked and messages deleted by a reporter from one of Murdoch’s papers.

After the meeting, the Dowler family emerged with their lawyer, who described Murdoch’s tone as humble.

“Yes he did apologize. He apologized many times. I don’t think somebody could have held their head in their hands and said sorry so many times,” said Mark Lewis, the Dowler family’s lawyer.

On Saturday, there were more apologies.

“The News of the World was in the business of holding others to account. It failed when it came to itself. We are sorry,” according to an ad signed by Murdoch.

The ad appeared in every London newspaper.

Last Sunday, Murdoch shut down his profitable tabloid, “The News of the World,” mired in allegations of criminal activity.

The scandal has even crossed the Atlantic.

Les Hinton, the head of the company that operates the Wall Street Journal, resigned Friday. He was in charge in London when much of the alleged criminal activity took place.

There is also a connection to 9/11: allegations that Murdoch’s reporters tried to tap the phones of 9/11 victims in search of yet more sensational headlines.

“Many, many innocent men, women, and children their private tears bought and sold by News International for commercial gain,” said Gordon Brown, the former British Prime Minister.

No longer intimidated by Murdoch, British politicians are putting his empire under the microscope.

This week, the government established a judicial inquiry to look at criminal activity, media ethics, and media ownership.

A 32-year-old Norwegian suspect has been arrested after at least 17 people were killed in two attacks in Norway.

At least seven people died in Oslo after a huge car bomb exploded close to buildings which house the offices of Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg.

A further 10 were killed when a man dressed as a police officer opened fire on the island of Utoya, near the capital, where a youth meeting of the ruling Labour Party was taking place.

The suspect being held in connection with both attacks has been named in media reports as Anders Behring Breivik.

An anonymous police official said the suspect was arrested in Utoya and appears to have acted alone in the attacks.

He added he did not think the attacks were “linked to any international terrorist organisations” but seemed to be the work of a “madman”.

Norway’s TV2 claimed the suspect has links to right-wing extremism, without disclosing its sources.

An eyewitness reported seeing between 25 and 30 bodies on the island.

Police have confirmed that 10 people were killed, but said that was a preliminary figure which they expected to rise.

Undetonated explosives were found on the island after police carried out a search.

Nobody can bomb us to be quiet. Nobody can shoot us to be quiet. Nobody can ever scare us from being Norway.

Norwegian Prime Minister, Jens Stoltenberg

Around 600 people were believed to be taking part in the summer camp – most of whom were teenagers aged between 14 and 18.

The Prime Minister had been due to attend the event on Saturday.

Mr Stoltenberg said that Norway would gain strength from the attacks.

“We are a small country, but a very proud one,” he said.

“Nobody can bomb us to be quiet. Nobody can shoot us to be quiet. Nobody can ever scare us from being Norway.”

One Norwegian man was arrested after the incident – he was described as being tall and blond. Sky sources said he was shot and wounded during the arrest.

Undetonated explosives were found on Utoya island after a bomb hit Oslo

Police said they suspected the 32-year-old was linked to the bombing in Oslo because of descriptions they had been given.

Sky’s senior news correspondent Ian Woods is in Oslo and said that the island is only a 30-minute drive from the city.

He said that although police would not confirm whether other people were involved, it was possible the gunman had worked alone as there was a 90-minute gap between the two incidents.

The shooting took place on Utoya island – the site of a summer youth camp

Jorgen Benone was on the island and said he saw people being shot by the man – who appeared to have a rifle.

He said he saw people jumping into the water to try and save themselves, but he thought that “many lost their lives trying to escape”.

“I was terrified for my life – I thought of all the people I love,” he said.

The Mayor of Oslo, Fabian Stang, said he would not have believed Norway could be attacked.

He said he wished he could have been on Utoya island: “To stand in front of the young people and ask the gunman to shoot me instead.”

Norwegian journalist Kadafi Zanan said police had sealed off the area and were only letting families onto the island.

Mr Zanan said that people in boats were searching in the water for those who were still missing.

Norwegian police said they feared there could also be explosives on the island.

Sky’s Foreign Affairs Editor: Who Is Responsible?

Witnesses said the gunman might have had a pistol and an automatic weapon.

Police told people in the Norwegian capital to stay away from the city centre and asked them to only use mobile phones when necessary.

They also warned them to avoid large gatherings and to stay away from public buildings.

Borders out of Norway were closed within minutes of the attack.

At least seven people were killed in the bombing – with 10 seriously injured.

The explosion was outside the building that housed the offices of the Prime Minister, although he was not there at the time.

Mr Stoltenberg said that police had advised him not to give details of where he was when the bomb exploded.

The finance ministry and the offices of Norway’s biggest tabloid newspaper were also nearby.

Eyewitness accounts of Oslo explosion

Craig Barnes lives in Oslo and said that he was shocked at what happened.

“It is a very nice, safe place to live,” he said.

“Norwegians are very friendly and I think everyone gets on.

“I think this is going to change a lot of views now. There will be questions regarding safety.”

Wreckage with bombed out buildings and paramedics

Norwegian police have reported there were ‘deaths and injuries’

British Prime Minister David Cameron said he was outraged by the attacks.

“I have offered Britain’s help, including through our close intelligence cooperation,” he said.

“We will work with Norway to hunt the murderers who did this and prevent any more innocent deaths.”

US President Barack Obama also offered his condolences.

He visited Oslo in 2009 to receive the Nobel Peace Prize and said he fondly recalled his welcome by the Norwegians.

“Our hearts go out to them and we will provide any support we can,” he said.

Anders Behring Breivik, the 32-year-old suspect in Friday’s attacks in Norway, held right-wing views, say police.

Police chief Sveinung Sponheim said his internet postings “suggest that he has some political traits directed toward the right, and anti-Muslim views”.

“But whether that was a motivation for the actual act remains to be seen,” he told Norwegian broadcaster NRK.

Mr Breivik appears to have created entries on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, though the accounts were set up just days ago on 17 July.

On the Facebook page attributed to him, he describes himself as a Christian and a conservative. The Facebook page is no longer available but it also listed interests such as body-building and freemasonry.

A Twitter account attributed to the suspect has also emerged but it only has one post, which is a quote from philosopher John Stuart Mill: “One person with a belief is equal to the force of 100,000 who have only interests.”

In a post in Norwegian in an online forum on December 2009, a user named Anders Behring Breivik claims there is not one country where Muslims have peacefully lived with non-Muslims, stating that instead it has had “catastrophic consequences” for non-Muslims.

Fertiliser

The gunman was described by witnesses who saw him on Utoeya island as tall and blond – and dressed in a police uniform. The image of him posted on Facebook depict a blond, blue-eyed man.

The Norwegian newspaper Verdens Gang quoted a friend as saying that the suspect turned to right-wing extremism when in his late 20s.

He had no military background except for ordinary national service and no criminal record, it seems.

Mr Breivik is believed to have grown up in Oslo, and studied at the Oslo School of Management, which offers degrees and post-graduate courses.

He later appears to have moved out of the city and established Breivik Geofarm, a company Norwegian media is describing as a farming sole proprietorship set up to cultivate vegetables, melons, roots and tubers.

A supply company has come forward to say that it delivered six tonnes of fertiliser to this company in May – an ingredient used in bomb-making.

A high school teacher was arrested Tuesday night after police allegedly caught her having sex with a 16-year-old student in a parking lot.
Ashley M. Blumenshine, 27, was charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse after police reportedly found her and the boy inside a vehicle at 6:19 p.m. outside Kohl’s, 11860 S. Route 59.
Blumenshine is a dance teacher at Plainfield North High School, where the boy is a junior.
Police Chief William Doster said officers were on patrol checking the parking lot when they saw two vehicles parked next to each other. One was unoccupied while Blumenshine was in the driver’s seat of the other vehicle with the minor in the back.
Assistant Will County State’s Attorney Mary Fillipitch said both occupants admitted they had just engaged in consensual sexual intercourse and a condom was taken as evidence from the vehicle.
“(Blumenshine) told police she knew he was a student at Plainfield North High School,” Fillipitch told Judge Marzell L. Richardson during a bond hearing Wednesday.
Blumenshine has taught at the school district since 2006. She choreographed several dances for the spring show in May, according to the district’s website.
She coached golf at Plainfield North, serving as head coach last school year and assistant coach in the 2008-09 school year. She also taught driver’s education in the summer in 2008. She was also an assistant cheerleading coach at Plainfield South High School in the 2006-07 school year.
District spokesman Tom Hernandez said a substitute teacher has taken over Blumenshire’s classes.
“District administration and the board of education will take appropriate action promptly after Blumenshine is released from custody,” he said in a statement.
On Wednesday, administration and counselors reached out to students most likely to be affected by the allegations, such as her students and dance club members.
Today, “the counseling will be more generally available in the auditorium,” Hernandez said.
Plainfield North Principal Ray Epperson sent an automated phone message to parents Wednesday afternoon, alerting parents that additional support services will be available for students.
“Counselors and social workers will be available to speak with any student who may need support. Also, please speak with your child about appropriate ways to deal with this situation and all of the misinformation that will be circulating for the next several days,” Epperson said. “If you or your child have relevant information, please share that with either the Plainfield Police Department or a trusted adult here at school.”
Court appearance
Blumenshine said only a clear “good afternoon” while appearing via videolink in bond court Wednesday. Fillipitch asked Richardson to set bond at $200,000 for the Class 2 felony, an amount defense attorney George Lenard called “extremely excessive.”
“(Blumenshine) has no prior criminal record and is a graduate of Eastern Illinois University and has a master’s degree from Olivet,” Lenard said. “The state indicated she made admissions to the officers, which shows she has been cooperative with (this investigation).”
Richardson set Blumenshine’s bond at $75,000 and said she is not to have any contact with students at Plainfield North or minors she is not related to if she is able to post bail.
Her case is scheduled for a hearing Jan. 26.

A missing 9-year-old Indiana girl has been found dead, and the family friend who was watching her before she disappeared was charged with murder Monday night, authorities said.

Allen County sheriff’s spokesman Cpl. Jeremy Tinkel said investigators found the body of Aliahna Lemmon in the county, but he wouldn’t say where. He also said 39-year-old Mike Plumadore was “interviewed by police and taken into custody at 9 p.m. and charged with murder.”

Plumadore, who had been watching Aliahna and her sisters before she was reported missing late Friday, is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.

FBI agents earlier Monday descended on the rundown mobile home park in Fort Wayne where Aliahna lived and was last seen. It’s a known haven for registered sex offenders, though Plumadore is not on Indiana’s registered sex offenders list. He has a criminal record in Florida and North Carolina that includes convictions for trespassing and assault.

According to a state website, 15 registered sex offenders live at the mobile home park that numbers about two dozen homes.

More than 100 emergency workers searched for Aliahna around the mobile home park Saturday, though no active search was done Sunday. Tinkel said the same size search could not be sustained because of the Christmas holiday.

“Children don’t just walk away during Christmastime,” Aliahna’s step-grandfather, David Story, said Monday afternoon.

Aliahna’s mother, Tarah Souders, told The Journal Gazette earlier Monday that her daughter had vision and hearing problems and suffered from attention deficit disorder and emotional problems. Aliahna and her sisters were staying with Plumadore because their mother had been sick with the flu and Aliahna’s stepfather works at night and sleeps during the day.

Plumadore told the newspaper Sunday that he left the three girls in his mobile home about 6 a.m. Friday and went to a gas station about a mile away to buy a cigar. Authorities have said the store’s surveillance video shows him there about that time.

“I had dead-bolted the door,” he said. “When I got back, all the girls was here.”

He said he smoked his cigar and went back to sleep, then woke up about 10 a.m. when Aliahna’s mother called. After that call, he realized the door to the home was unlocked and that Aliahna was gone. He said Aliahna’s 6-year-old sisters told him Aliahna had left with her mother.

Plumadore said it wasn’t until he talked with Aliahna’s mother about 8:30 p.m. that they realized she was missing and police were notified.

Tarah Souders said the miscommunication caused the delay in determining that Aliahna had vanished.

“She’s never wandered off,” Souders said. “She’s never done anything like this before.”

New York police have arrested a man for murder and arson after he allegedly doused her with fuel and set her alight in the lift of her block of flats.

CCTV images captured a man entering the lift, wearing surgical gloves, a protective mask on the top of his head and spraying an accelerant over her.

Police said Jerome Isaac, 47, had surrendered and implicated himself in the attack.

The victim was named as Deloris Gillespie, 73, of Brooklyn.

New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne said Mr Isaac walked into a police station hours after the Saturday afternoon attack, smelling of gasoline, and implicated himself.

He told police Ms Gillespie owed him $2,000 (£1,300) for work he had done for her, Mr Browne said.

After allegedly setting Ms Gillespie on fire, Mr Isaac walked to his own nearby block of flats and started a fire there, Mr Browne said.

Residents of Ms Gillespie’s building in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, told the New York Times they recognised the man in photos of the suspect released by police.

They said he had known Ms Gillespie and sometimes carried shopping bags for her.

Evacuated

Mr Browne said Mr Isaac had been waiting for Ms Gillespie as she arrived by lift on the fifth floor of her apartment block at around 16:00 local time (11:00 GMT).

“It was apparent he knew she was on the elevator,” he said.

Video footage showed the man walk into a lift and spray her “sort of methodically” before pulling out a barbecue-style lighter, igniting a rag in a bottle, using the flames to set her alight and then throwing the bottle into the lift, Mr Browne said.

Ms Gillespie was carrying grocery bags at the time, and crouched down at the back of the lift to try to shield herself.

The six-storey building was evacuated and residents kept away for several hours while police investigated, Associated Press news agency said.

ap sam hurd kd 111216 wblog Sam Hurd Arrested: Chicago Bears Wide Receiver Jailed After Undercover Sting

December 15, 2011, 3:31 p.m.

Chicago Bears receiver Sam Hurd was arrested Wednesday night outside a Rosemont restaurant after he accepted a kilogram of cocaine from a confidential informant and an undercover federal agent posing as a drug supplier, according to federal charges filed Thursday in Dallas.

Hurd was charged with one count of conspiring to possess half a kilogram of cocaine with the intent to distribute it. Hurd appeared in federal court in Chicago in late afternoon and will remain in custody overnight while his attorney arranges bond.

Hurd, dressed in street clothes — fashionable jeans and a gray T-shirt — stood ramrod straight in front of the judge and replied, “Yes, sir,” to various questions about whether he understood his rights.

At the Wednesday night meeting, authorities allege that Hurd negotiated to buy five to 10 kilograms of cocaine and 1,000 pounds of marijuana a week for distribution in the Chicago area. He agreed to pay $25,000 for each kilogram of cocaine and $450 a pound for the marijuana, according to the charges.

Hurd said at the meeting that he plays for the Bears, gets out of practice at about 5:30 p.m., and would pay them on the next day, authorities said. Bears players are paid on Thursdays.

Hurd told the undercover agent and informant that he and someone else distributed about four kilograms of cocaine each week in the Chicago area but that their supplier wasn’t able to meet their needs, according to the criminal complaint.

The Bears issued the following statement: “We are aware of Sam’s arrest and are continuing to gather details surrounding it. We are disappointed whenever these circumstances arise. We will deal with them appropriately once we have all the information.”

Bears coach Lovie Smith said after practice Thursday that Hurd remains a member of the team.

“I am in shock over it,” Smith said. “Never saw it coming. My dealings with Sam here as most of you would probably say the same has all been good. He’s a guy that showed up every day to go to work.”

Hurd, who played at Northern Illinois, signed a three-year contract with the Bears this offseason after playing the previous five seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. The veteran receiver has been primarily a special teams contributor for the Bears.

Bears receiver Roy Williams, who played with Hurd for three seasons with the Cowboys, said he was “shocked” by the news.

“It’s a situation I don’t want anyone to be in, especially a close friend, a teammate that I have been playing with now for four or five years now, especially a guy from Texas with a wife and daughter,” Williams said Thursday at Halas Hall. “So, it’s tough for me just because I am not into drugs or anything like that. I know it has to be tough for him because he has his family. It’s a choice he made and there are consequences with choices that you make.”

Asked for his thoughts about Hurd, Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher said, “It’s sad for him. I’m not sure what’s going on, but you never want to hear about one of your teammates, something like this happening to them.

“He’s a good teammate. That’s what I know of him. He comes to work every day and works hard. Outside of here, I don’t know him very well. But he comes to work every day and practices hard and plays hard. That’s all I know of him. He’s a friendly guy.”

Hurd was inactive for the season opener against the Atlanta Falcons because of a sprained ankle, and has eight receptions for 109 yards on the season.

The complaint alleged that Hurd first came to the attention of federal authorities in July when the confidential informant tipped off agents that a man — later learned to be a Hurd associate — was attempting to coordinate the purchase of about four kilograms of cocaine in the Dallas area. The associate wanted to complete the deal that day so the buyer could transport the cocaine to a northern destination that same day, authorities charged.

At the direction of authorities, the informant met with the Hurd associate. After the meeting, Dallas County police conducted a traffic stop of the Hurd associate and recovered $88,000 in cash and a marijuana plant.

Hurd, who owned the vehicle pulled over by police, later reached out to federal agents and claimed that he had placed the $88,000 into the vehicle and then turned over the vehicle to the associate — who worked at a car repair shop — for maintenance and detailing work, according to the charges.

Hurd produced a bank statement that he said showed he had withdrawn the $88,000 from his account, but authorities said the statement did not reflect that size of a withdrawal.

Hurd’s three-year contract with the Bears had a maximum value of $5.15 million ($4.15 million base total), and Hurd received a $1.35 million signing bonus. His base pay this season was $685,000. The Bears could pursue trying to recover some of the signing bonus.

The investigation is being handled by the U.S. Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Dallas.

Walker probe puts prominent Milwaukee commercial Realtor in jail

Andrew P. Jensen Jr., a principal with Milwaukee-based commercial real estate brokerage The Boerke Company Inc., was booked into the Milwaukee County Jail Tuesday night.
Jensen was taken to the jail by an investigator with the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s office, said Capt. Scott Stiff of the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Department.
No charges have been filed yet against Jensen, Stiff said. Inmates can be held in jail for up to 72 hours without charges being filed. If the District Attorney’s office fails to file charges by then, the Sheriff’s Department must release Jensen, Stiff said.
When asked why Jensen was taken to jail, Sheila Stanelle, senior executive assistant for Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm, said, “Our office would have no comment on that at this time.”
Jensen “is still pending felony charges, he is expected in intake court today between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Depending on the court calendar it may not happen until tomorrow,” said Karen Brimley-Massey of the Sheriff’s Department.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is reporting that Jensen’s arrest is related to a John Doe investigation by the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s office of Gov. Scott Walker’s current and former aides. The probe began last year when a staff member working for Walker, then county executive, was caught posting online political comments during work time.
However the scope of the investigation grew and in September about a dozen law enforcement officers, including FBI agents, searched the Madison home of Cynthia Archer, who was previously deputy secretary in Walker’s Department of Administration. Archer was top aide to Walker while he was county executive and followed him to Madison after he won the governor’s race in November.
Jensen joined The Boerke Company in 1986. He specializes in office property deals. He is also past chairman of the Commercial Association of Realtors Wisconsin (CARW).

The suspect in the slaying of a 7-year-old Georgia girl worked in the apartment complex where she lived, investigators said Wednesday.

Authorities arrested maintenance worker Ryan Brunn, 20, on Wednesday afternoon.

He is charged with killing 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera, who was last seen alive Friday near a playground at the apartment complex in Canton, Georgia. Investigators found her body in a trash bin there three days later.

Tips from the public led authorities to Brunn, said Vernon Keenan, the director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Brunn had been working at the complex since November 7, authorities said.

“We believe that this horrendous crime was planned and calculated,” Keenan told reporters.

Jorelys was abducted “in the immediate vicinity” of the apartment complex’s playground, then taken to an empty apartment nearby, Keenan said.

“We have evidence that the murder occurred in that vacant apartment,” he said. “At some point, the child’s body was then disposed of in the Dumpster and compacted into trash.”

Authorities have said Jorelys died of blunt force trauma to the head, was stabbed and had been sexually assaulted.

Earlier, Keenan said investigators had found blood in an empty apartment.

Brunn was one of hundreds of people investigators interviewed in their search for suspects, Keenan said Wednesday. Authorities arrested him after they had obtained enough evidence to connect him to the killing, Keenan said, but the investigation will continue for months.

“We are investigating all of the past history of Ryan Brunn and piecing together what he’s been doing the last several years,” Keenan said. “We have sent agents to other states and also to other counties and we’re going to backtrack all of his activities and make a determination if he has been involved in other crimes. He has no known criminal history to us, but we will find out.”

Posts on a Facebook page that friends said belonged to Brunn recently talked of plans to move to Canton from Dahlonega, Georgia.

“New job, apt, life coming soon,” an October 6 post said. A post on November 5 said, “Today is moving day! Not ready to go but i got to.”

The brutal killing has shaken residents of the apartment complex, located about 40 miles north of Atlanta.

Witnesses told CNN that some neighbors screamed profanities and threw things as authorities arrested Brunn there Wednesday.

“It’s so close to home. To think she was just right there at the park and from there disappeared is the scariest thing,” Maria Rodriguez, a friend of the girl’s mother, told CNN before Brunn’s arrest.

Relatives of the little girl were devastated by her death.

“My world collapsed,” her father, Ricardo Galarza, told CNN affiliate WAPA in Puerto Rico. “I couldn’t believe that they robbed her from me.”

“They destroyed my soul,” her grandmother, Wanda Ivette Rivera, told the same network. “They took a piece of my heart.”

Another family member, Miriam Rivera, urged the state of Georgia to “throw the full weight of the law to the person who did this.”

Brunn is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the Cherokee County Courthouse in Canton, Keenan said.

Michele Zagaria

7 December 2011          08:44 ET

Italian police say they have discovered the notorious chief of a Naples mafia clan, Michele Zagaria, who has been on the run for 16 years.

Police said they had found him after digging through a secret bunker in his home town of Casapesenna near Naples.

Described as head of the powerful Casalesi clan, he was sentenced to multiple life sentences in absentia.

The Casalesi clan has been involved in drug trafficking and corruption in the construction industry.

There was jubilation among the security forces who finally managed to detain Mr Zagaria, the BBC’s Alan Johnston in Rome reports.

“You won. The state has won,” Mr Zagaria told anti-mafia investigators as he was being arrested, according to the AFP news agency.

Italian Interior Minister Anna Maria Cancellieri hailed the arrest as “a huge success by the state”, adding that it would be a blow “not only against the Casalesi clan, but against the entire Camorra organisation.”

‘Near home’

Map of Italy

The Casalesi clan is one of a number of groups within the Camorra criminal network, which dominates the underworld in the Naples area.

Mr Zagaria had probably spent his years as a fugitive near home because mafia bosses “can only exercise their power if they’re in an environment that protects them,” anti-mafia prosecutor Piero Grasso told the AP news agency.

Mr Zagaria is thought to be the most senior figure in the Camorra who was still at large.

Former Miss USA Rima Fakih appointed herself designated driver after deciding her companion was too drunk to drive, only to realize that she too was intoxicated, her attorney said today, the day after she was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.

Fakih, 26, was arrested by Highland Park police early Saturday morning on Woodward Avenue and charged with misdemeanor drunk driving. Today, her attorney, Doraid Elder, said he had not yet seen the paperwork and could not say what her blood alcohol level was at the time of her arrest or where the two had been drinking. A .08 is over the legal limit under state law.

Highland Park police again did not provide details today about the arrest, saying information would have to come from the chief Monday.

But Elder added new details:

Fakih was driving her companion’s vehicle near the outskirts of Highland Park because the companion was intoxicated, Elder said.

Fakih, Elder said, realized almost immediately that she was also too drunk to drive and was pulling over to the curb when police spotted her.

It’s not clear if she was taken to jail, or released to another person. Elder said he is not aware of when the hearing date is set.

After the arrest was reported by local media, a tweet from Fakih’s official Twitter and Facebook accounts Saturday implied it was another Fakih who had been stopped. Those posts were removed later Saturday night.

Today, her attorney said other people with access to those accounts had posted the misleading information.

“She is taking full responsibility,” Elder said, “She wants to apologize to everybody she let down.”

Fakih, from Dearborn, became the first Arabic woman to become Miss USA when she claimed the crown in 2010.

Elder said Fakih was spending today with her family. A tweet from her Twitter account read, “A long run always gets me energized! It’s time to make football Sunday food.”

If convicted, she faces up to 93 days in jail, plus fines and court costs, and may be ordered to perform community service.

Michael Robles and Kathy Cary Scharbarth

November 27, 2011       1:04 pm

A 34-year-old Carlsbad woman found strangled Saturday had gotten a restraining order just days earlier against the former boyfriend now accused of kidnapping and killing her.

Kathy Cary Scharbarth had gotten the order against Michael David Robles, 43, of Fallbrook, as part of a case of alleged domestic violence.

When she went missing Thursday, her family and current boyfriend notified police. Robles was arrested on Saturday, and Scharbarth’s body was found hours later.

The county medical examiner has determined that she died from strangulation.

Scharbarth is survived by her parents and 13-year-old daughter. Robles is being held in county jail in Vista without bail and is set to be arraigned Tuesday on charges of kidnapping and first-degree murder.

Jerald Newman, 54, spent Friday night in a Maricopa County jail hours after being arrested. An Arizona man lay handcuffed and non-responsive on the floor of a Walmart early on Black Friday.

10:56 PM EST       Sat November 26, 2011

An Arizona police department will conduct an investigation into the bloody arrest of a 54-year-old grandfather during a Black Friday sale at a Walmart, an assistant police chief said Saturday.

Jerald Newman, 54, was released Saturday from a Maricopa County jail, his wife, Pamela, told CNN. He has been charged with resisting arrest and shoplifting.

“(He is) as good as expected … but he is emotionally and mentally a wreck,” she said.

Newman was among a throng of shoppers crammed into a Buckeye, Arizona, Walmart soon after it opened late the night of Thanksgiving.

“They were just letting people in; there was nowhere to walk,” said his daughter, Berneta Sanchez, who was also in the store. “Teenagers and adults were fighting for these games, taking them away from little kids and away from my father.”

The suspect’s grandson, Nicholas Nava, told CNN affiliate KNXV that Newman had grabbed one video game and put it under his shirt so that others jostling for the game didn’t take it from him. One person alerted a police officer, who then approached Newman.

David Chadd, a CNN iReporter from Las Vegas, was among the crowd shopping for video games set up in the Walmart’s grocery section. He said Newman “was not resisting” arrest as he was led away from the crowd by a police officer.

That officer, Chadd said, then suddenly hooked the suspect around the leg, grabbed him and “slammed him face first into the ground.”

“It was like a bowling ball hitting the ground, that’s how bad it was,” he said.

Video, recorded by Chadd and later posted on CNN’s iReport, shows an apparently unconscious Newman head-down on the floor in a pool of blood. As he’s turned over, Buckeye police officers appear to try to revive him — at which point his face, covered mostly in blood, is revealed.

Several voices, apparently those of fellow shoppers, are heard saying, “Why would you throw him down so hard? All he did was shoplifting and you threw him down like that?” Another person says, “They threw him down. He wasn’t doing anything wrong.”

Two citizens then appear to come to Newman’s aid by applying paper towels to the man’s nose. Chadd estimated Newman was knocked out for about 10 minutes, all the while gushing blood and handcuffed.

Buckeye Assistant Police Chief Larry Hall said Saturday that Newman’s case is “basically in the court’s hands right now, as far as the resisting arrest and shoplifting goes.”

The department will conduct an investigation to assess whether the actions of the police officer involved in the arrest were “within reason,” based on “our policy and also the law.” He said that probe would happen soon, adding it was “days away.”

“We may have an independent agency conduct the inquiry, just to show transparency,” Hall said.

As to the criminal charges, Todd Nolan — the attorney representing Newman — said his office will conduct discovery procedures Monday with police “to gather evidence proving my client is innocent.”

The suspect himself plans to speak to the media later next week, his lawyer said.

Walmart spokeswoman Ashley Hardie said the retail giant was aware of the incident.

“We are concerned whenever there is an incident involving a customer at one of our stores,” Hardie said. “We are in contact with the local police and are sharing any information we have with them.”

Sanchez described her father as “a really nice man,” saying he is a custom furniture maker who preaches through the California prison system. He has raised his grandson from birth and, even while in the hospital, Sanchez said the boy was her father’s chief concern.

Whatever happens, Sanchez vowed that next year she won’t be shopping in the wee hours of the Friday morning after Thanksgiving.

“I will never leave my house again on Black Friday, because I don’t want to put my daughter through that again,” she said, noting her daughter was there to see police standing over her bloody grandfather. “I’d rather stay home. And if they have Black Friday, they need more security.”

Wal-Mart baseball bat killing

November 3, 2011        2:20 pm

Prosecutors charged a transient with murder Thursday for allegedly beating a 74-year-old man to death at a Lakewood Wal-Mart with an aluminum bat.

Richard Lawrence Kalfin, 47, is due to appear in a Bellflower courtroom Thursday for arraignment on the single murder count. In charging Kalfin, prosecutors also noted he had a 2005 conviction for arson.

Authorities have identified the victim as David Oakleaf of Lakewood, who died Tuesday after being repeatedly struck in the head in what witnesses described as a vicious, methodical attack.

Kalfin is believed to be a local transient who frequented the Wal-Mart shopping center. On Tuesday, he wandered into the store and through its aisles before ending up in the sporting goods section.

He removed a baseball bat from a display rack and began walking the nearby aisles, stopping only when he spotted Oakleaf. Witnesses told authorities Kalfin began swinging the bat swiftly and furiously at the customer’s head.Sheriff’s Lt. Eddie Hernandez said there was no evidence the two men had prior contact.

In a statement, Wal-Mart expressed its “deepest condolences” to the victim’s family.

“We are working closely with law enforcement to offer what information we have, such as surveillance video that might help with the investigation,” the company said.

Patricia Serrano booking photo

November 3, 2011       4:15 pm

A 43-year-old Fountain Valley woman was charged with having sex with a 12-year-old boy who was her son’s friend, authorities said Thursday afternoon.

Patricia Ann Serrano is charged with three felony counts of lewd acts on a child under 14 with a sentencing enhancement for substantial sexual conduct with a child, the Orange County district attorney’s office said. She is scheduled for a continued arraignment Friday.

In October, Serrano allegedly had sex with the boy twice — in a car and in her home, according to the district attorney’ office.

The boy’s mother discovered Serrano in a room with the victim. Serrano had allegedly been kissing the boy, but the mother did not observe any wrongdoing, the district attorney’s office said.  The mother became suspicious and alerted police.

Serrano was arrested Tuesday by Fountain Valley police officers. Serrano, who was being held in lieu of $100,000 bond, is scheduled to appear tomorrow at the West Justice Center in Westminster.

Prosecutors said the case is ongoing and asked anyone with information to call Investigator Lou Gutierrez at (714) 347-8794 or Det. Jesse Hughes at (714) 593-4480.

Four US men arrested over biological attack plot

November 01, 2011

Frederick Thomas, 73, of Cleveland, Ga.; Dan Roberts, 67, of Toccoa, Ga.; Ray H. Adams, 65, of Toccoa; and Samuel J. Crump, 68, of Toccoa, were arrested today relating to plans to obtain an unregistered explosive device and silencer and to manufacture the biological toxin ricin for use in attacks against other U.S. citizens and government personnel and officials.

U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia Sally Quillian Yates said, “These defendants, who are alleged to be part of a fringe militia group, are charged with planning attacks against their own fellow citizens and government. To carry out their agenda, two of the defendants allegedly purchased purported explosives and a silencer, while the other two defendants took steps to attempt to produce a deadly biological toxin. While many are focused on the threat posed by international violent extremists, this case demonstrates that we must also remain vigilant in protecting our country from citizens within our own borders who threaten our safety and security.”

FBI Atlanta Special Agent in Charge Brian D. Lamkin said of today’s arrests, “The FBI will act swiftly within its authority when any group or individual seeks to advance its rhetoric or ideology through force or violence. In this matter, the FBI’s Atlanta Division Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) was well positioned to address this investigation and to prevent harm to the general public.”

According to the criminal complaints, federal search warrants and documents in the public record, Thomas, Roberts, Crump, Adams and others were members of a militia organization and began participating in clandestine meetings of a fringe “covert” operations team starting in approximately March 2011. During these meetings, the complaints charge that the men discussed multiple criminal activities, ranging from murder; theft; manufacturing and using toxic agents; and assassinations in an effort to undermine federal and state government and to advance their interests.

In March and April 2011, Thomas, Roberts, Adams and others attended meetings where participants discussed targeting various government officials, including employees of federal agencies such as the Internal Revenue Service. These meetings also were monitored by FBI agents through the attendance of a confidential source, who recorded the meetings and provided the information to the FBI.

During the meetings, the complaints allege that Thomas, Roberts and others discussed the need to obtain unregistered silencers and explosive devices for use in attacks against federal government buildings and employees, as well as against local police. Thomas, Roberts and others also discussed the use of the biological toxin that can kill individuals in small doses. The participants acknowledged that these actions would constitute murder but reasoned that the actions were necessary in accordance with their ideology.

In May and June 2011, Thomas and Roberts met with an undercover agent purporting to be a seller of unregistered silencers and explosive devices. According to the complaints, Thomas and Roberts allegedly agreed to purchase a silencer and an unregistered explosive device and discussed using the silencers and explosive devices in attacks against federal buildings. In furtherance of this plan, Thomas conducted surveillance of federal buildings in Atlanta and discussed with the source the possibility of attacking the federal buildings using silencers and explosive devices, as punishment for what Thomas deemed to be “treasonous” activities. Thomas also allegedly stated that he believed that these actions needed to be undertaken against both federal and state government officials, and advised that the group would need a great deal of explosives to accomplish its mission.

From June through November 2011, Thomas and Roberts met with the undercover agent and negotiated the purchase of a silencer for a rifle and conversion parts to make a fully automatic rifle, as well as explosives. The complaints allege that Thomas confirmed to the agent that he planned to use the silencer that he was purchasing, and described how he would clean the rifle and use rubber gloves when he handled it so he wouldn’t leave his fingerprints on it during its use. Ultimately, Thomas agreed to purchase the silencer and conversion parts in exchange for providing the undercover agent with another gun owned by Thomas, while Thomas and Roberts allegedly agreed to split the $1,000 cost for the explosives. Thomas and Roberts later expressed concerns that the undercover agent was a “cop,” but wanted to go forward with the transaction anyway.

The complaints charge that during the investigation of Thomas and Roberts, Roberts described another individual named “Sammy” who, according to Roberts, had manufactured the biological toxin, ricin, and had access to the beans used to make ricin. During one of the group’s meetings in September, which was recorded by the confidential source, Crump arrived and said that he would like to make 10 pounds of ricin and disperse it in various United States cities, including Atlanta. Crump described a scenario for dispersing the ricin in Atlanta in which the toxin would be blown from a car traveling on the interstates. Crump allegedly also said that he possessed the ingredient used to make the toxin and cautioned the source about the dangers of handling it.

The complaints allege that in October 2011, Crump described to the source the process to manufacture ricin and advised that the materials should be purchased at different locations far from where he lived. Crump again discussed various methods of and locations to disperse ricin, and told the source that the toxin is deadly if the powder comes into contact with a person’s skin or lungs. During another meeting in October, Adams allegedly provided a sample to Crump of the beans used to manufacture ricin from a storage container of the beans contained at his residence in Stephens County, Georgia, and Crump in turn provided the sample to the source. During meetings on Oct. 29, 2011, Crump allegedly told the source that he was going to shell the beans that week, and Adams explained to the source how to manufacture ricin, showing the source a formula used to make ricin and identifying the ways he planned to obtain the ingredients to do so.

FBI agents arrested all four defendants today without incident and executed search warrants at the residences of the four defendants. The defendants are expected to make an initial appearance on the charges before U.S. Magistrate Judge Susan S. Cole tomorrow.

The information provided by the source and the undercover agent allowed the agents to disrupt the defendants’ plans before they were in a position to place citizens in danger of attacks using the weapons, explosives, or a biological toxin.

Members of the public are reminded that the criminal complaints contain only allegations. A defendant is presumed innocent of the charges and it will be the government’s burden to prove a defendant’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt at trial.

This case is being investigated by the JTTF, which includes agents of the FBI, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration. Assistance in this case has been provided by law enforcement agencies from Habersham County and Stephens County, Ga., and the District Attorney’s Office for the Mountain Judicial Circuit.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Brown is prosecuting the case.

US soldier arrested on suspicion of spying at Army base

November 1, 2011     7:44 pm

A young military policeman stationed in Alaska has been arrested on suspicion
of espionage, but military officials disclosed no details in their announcement
Tuesday.

Specialist William Colton Millay, 22, was taken into custody Friday in
Anchorage, where he is stationed at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, the Army
said in a brief statement.

“The investigation is being conducted right now, and I don’t have anything else to add,” Lt. Col. Bill Coppernoll, public affairs office for the Army in Alaska, told The Times.

Millay, of Owensboro, Ky., is a military policeman assigned to the 164th
Military Police Company, 793rd Military Police Battalion, 2nd Engineer Brigade
— known as the “Arctic Enforcers.”

The arrest followed a joint investigation by the Federal Bureau of
Investigation, Army Counterintelligence and the Army’s criminal investigative
division, officials said, and will be prosecuted in the military court
system.

“Today’s arrest was the result of the close working relationship between the
FBI and its military partners in Alaska. Through this ongoing partnership, we
are better able to protect our nation,” Mary Frances Rook, special agent in
charge of the FBI in Alaska, said in a statement.

The Army Times broke the story of the arrest over the weekend but
had few substantive details. It quoted a friend of Millay’s, Jason Payne, as
saying the young MP was “as loyal to his country as he is to his best
friends.”

“He was really patriotic and really loved his country,” Payne said. “I just
don’t see the motivation for him to do it.”

Millay’s company has served in both Afghanistan and Iraq over the past five
years and last spring redeployed to Afghanistan to train Afghan police. Millay
remained in Alaska as part of the company’s rear detachment during the current
deployment. The battalion’s headquarters were moved from Germany to Alaska in
2010.

Authorities took a man into custody late Friday night who they identified as the suspect who was the subject of a huge manhunt earlier in the day after an officer was shot at in Greenville.

Authorities identified him as Patrick Dean Lowrance, 25, of Duncan.

He was being taken to a hospital with a wounded shoulder, Major Shea Smith of the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office said. No other details of the arrest were available late Friday night.

No warrants had been issued in connection with the manhunt, authorities said, and the man was arrested on outstanding warrants in earlier cases.

Lowrance was wanted by police on a number of charges before today’s incident, including the attempted armed robbery of a Wendy’s restaurant in Greenville, according to incident reports and warrants.

Earlier in the day, helicopters had circled Mauldin Road and K-9 units scoured the woods below for the suspect.

Ten schools were put on lockdown, and main thoroughfares were blocked off in a long stretch of Mauldin Road that seemed strange and empty. Sheriff’s deputies looked grim as they aimed assault rifles into the distance while dogs tracked a scent that weaved through trees and dense undergrowth.

They were looking for a man who Greenville Police Chief Terri Wilfong said ambushed an officer and opened fire in a breezeway of Berkley Pointe Apartments at 500 Wenwood Road. The officer wasn’t injured in the shooting, nor was anyone else.

The manhunt took place along the streets of one of Greenville’s affluent neighborhoods, with police officers camped out next to houses with impeccably manicured lawns in an area that many prominent Greenville figures call home.

The incident began when officers arrived at the apartment complex to track down the driver of a silver Yukon who fled when police tried to pull him over at approximately 9:40 a.m. for an improper tag on Laurens Road near Interstate 85, authorities said.

“It was only going to be a traffic violation, nothing more,” Wilfong said.

Shots were fired at officers, and one returned fire, according to the chief, who described it as “a gun battle.”

The man fled into the woods, launching an exhaustive manhunt that had the Highway Patrol, SWAT teams, SLED and other local authorities searching the apartment complex, nearby homes, underneath bridges and a wooded area that Wilfong said spans three miles.

Police said they believe the gunman was armed with an unknown amount of ammunition and weapons and posed a serious threat to the community.

“They’re alarmed, as they should be when you have somebody who tried to kill a police officer and now is running loose,” Wilfong said. “We have to be very very careful.”

Michael Rosemond was washing clothes at a laundromat on White Horse Road when news reports of a gunman on the run came on television. Fearing for his safety, Rosemond grabbed his still-wet laundry and tried to drive home but met a roadblock at Cavalier Drive.

“I was nervous,” he said while watching officers in bullet-proof vests across the street.

Reverse 9-1-1 was used to alert residents in the Mauldin Road and East Parkins Mill Road area to stay in their homes and lock their doors.

Among the schools that were put on lockdown were Sara Collins Elementary, the Washington Center, Christ Church Episcopal School, Greenville Technical College and St. Joseph’s Catholic School. The lockdown was lifted before 3 p.m.

By then, the search was focused on the wooded area. The hunt was hard on the dogs, which had to take breaks between treks across fallen trees and limbs. K-9 units later lost the scent at Interstate 85.

Investigators now believe the gunman was picked up in a vehicle under Interstate 85 between Mauldin Road and Pleasantburg Drive, said Greenville police spokeswoman Alia Urps.

A gunman apparently enraged over a custody dispute walked into a crowded Seal Beach hair salon where his former wife worked and opened fire, killing eight people and critically wounding another person in the deadliest shooting in Orange County history.

The attacker sprayed Salon Meritage with gunfire Wednesday afternoon as victims fell to the floor and those who could escape ran onto the street or hid in neighboring businesses in the bustling area of trendy restaurants and shops along Pacific Coast Highway, authorities and witnesses said. The gunman continued firing outside, where he shot one man who apparently tried to flee in a Range Rover.

“He just didn’t stop. Anybody he saw he was shooting,” said an Anaheim woman who was in a stylist’s chair when the gunman began firing. “It went boom, boom, boom. I was afraid he was going to shoot everybody.”

An officer saw the suspect leaving the area as police responded to reports of the gunfire. The man was arrested about half a mile away and was the sole suspect in the rampage, authorities said.

Police on Wednesday night had not released the alleged gunman’s name or the identities of the victims, nor had they established a motive. But friends and witnesses who knew the salon employees said the alleged gunman was Scott Dekraai and he appeared to be targeting his former wife, who was a stylist at Salon Meritage. They said the couple had been involved in a bitter custody dispute involving their son.

The midafternoon rampage stunned the normally placid beach community. Just one homicide had been reported in the city in the last five years, authorities said.

“A crime of this magnitude is not something Seal Beach is familiar with,” Seal Beach Police Sgt. Steve Bowles said. “This could be one of our greatest tragedies.”

Six people were pronounced dead at the scene. Three others were taken to the trauma center at Long Beach Memorial Hospital, where two later died, police said. All the victims were adults.

One of those slain was salon owner Randy Fannin, according to niece Tami Scarcella.

Dekraai, 41, allegedly stormed into the salon about 1:30 p.m. and appeared to be looking for his former wife, Michelle Fournier, according to friends and witnesses. Dekraai is a resident of Huntington Beach. It was unclear whether Fournier was among those killed.

According to Los Angeles County Superior Court documents, Dekraai initiated a divorce case in 2007 against Fournier, whose last name was then Dekraai, court spokeswoman Mary Hearn said. A judge ruled that all contact between the couple had to be via text or email, except for a 10-minute phone call once a week to discuss their child’s education and well-being.

At the time of the court dispute, Hearn said, it appeared that Dekraai was awarded custody and Fournier had to comply with several conditions to see the child, such as to not consume alcohol 24 hours before visiting. In August 2010, the case was transferred to Orange County Superior Court at Dekraai’s request, according to Hearn.

Fournier always seemed to be in a great mood and enjoyed her children, said Judy Rodriguez Watson, co-owner of the Bay City Center where the salon is located. “She was a sweet, sweet, loving happy mama,” Watson said. “She was always showing off photos of her kids.”

She said she believes Fournier has three sons.

Outside the salon, which was cordoned off with yellow crime scene tape, witnesses described a chaotic scene in which multiple rounds were fired inside the business and in the parking lot. Kimberly Criswell, who owns a neighboring salon, said at least two shots were fired in front of her business as the attacker shot at the man in the Range Rover.

“My receptionist looked outside and yelled, ‘He just shot that man!'” Criswell said.

The gunshots, said Riley Riggs, 27, were followed by several minutes of “eerie silence.”

“I could still smell gunpowder in the air,” said Riggs, a San Luis Obispo resident who was staying at the Pacific Inn, across the street from the center.

Then a man yelled at arriving police officers, pointing toward the gunman down the street. “He’s in a white truck! He’s in a white truck! That way, that way!” Riggs recalled the man shouting.

As investigators gathered evidence at the white and green, two-level complex, workers from neighboring businesses gathered beyond the crime tape. Some shook their heads and cried as they remembered friends caught in the gunfire.

“This is a shock to the whole community,” said Dion Martini, a manicurist at a nearby salon on Main Street. “All of us around here have worked together at one time or another.

“I just can’t imagine anybody being that sick to go in and do that to anybody.”

Friends remembered Salon Meritage owner Fannin, who was about 6 feet tall with a dash of gray in his black hair, as a man who fostered a family-like environment in his small business. Workers celebrated Christmas together and enjoyed birthday parties.

“He was precious,” said Lydia Sosa, a former employee. “He was, like, the most wonderful man you’ll ever meet.”

Outside Dekraai’s Huntington Beach home Wednesday evening, an American flag was flying and a basketball hoop marked the spot where neighbors said the father often played with his son.

The light-blue home was cordoned off by police tape as detectives searched the residence.

Christa Andrews, a 30-year-old homemaker with three children who lives down the street, said Dekraai moved in about two years ago. He told her that he had been in the military, and that a leg injury caused him to limp. He also mentioned that he had been going through a rough patch with his wife.

Andrews said Dekraai played soccer and rode bikes with the boy, who appeared to be about 7 years old. The family had a dog named Conway.

Patty Roach, a hairstylist who has lived in the neighborhood for 25 years, said Dekraai seemed at home in the unassuming community where middle-class families raise their children.

Her husband, Roach said, could not believe what had happened. She said he kept saying: “There’s no way it could have been him.”

Michelle Fournier, left, and Christy Wilson

October 13, 2011    2:32 pm

Friends identified another victim of the Seal Beach shooting rampage as Christy Wilson, a lifelong Lakewood resident and mother of three who worked at the salon.

Linda Stewart, 45, a longtime friend who works at a salon in Huntington Beach, said Wilson was creative, energetic and friendly and was part of a close-knit family. She had worked at the salon for many years and was an expert nail artist. In her spare time, she made and sold jewelry.

“She was everybody’s friend,” Stewart said. “She had not one enemy, ever.”

Wilson was a friend of Michelle Fournier, the ex-wife of alleged shooter Scott Evans Dekraai. Witnesses said Fournier was the target of the shooting and one of the eight who died.

KTLA News reported Wilson was in court on Tuesday, testifying at a custody hearing on Fournier’s behalf. Her husband, Paul Wilson, said his wife stood up for her friend because she thought it was the right thing to do.

On Thursday, Stewart put out a call on her Facebook page for people to give gifts of food to the Wilson family, but within a few hours, she was so overwhelmed by responses that she began asking people to donate to the funeral costs instead. She said she is now considering starting a jewelry line in Wilson’s honor, with proceeds to go to assist victims of domestic violence.

His friends knew right off when they saw the customized Land Rover outside the Seal Beach salon that their pal David Caouette might be among the victims in Orange County’s deadliest shooting.

“He was in the wrong place at the wrong time and had no way to defend himself,” longtime friend Ed Testa told the Orange County Register.

Caouette and Testa were among a group of hard-core off-road enthusiasts who liked to head off to Big Bear or the desert to blaze the trails, the newspaper reported.

By Thursday, the online message board for the Southern California Land Rover Club was filled with remembrances.

“The more I look … at all the event pictures I have on my computer here the more I am reminded of all the crazy incredible times we had,” one post read.

Full coverage: Deadly shooting at Seal Beach beauty salon

It was not immediately clear why Caouette was parked near Salon Meritage, where the shooting took place. But Testa told the Register that the former car salesman lived in Seal Beach and may have been dining at one of the many restaurants and cafes at the bustling Pacific Coast Highway shopping center.

“My eyes starting welling up, and I had to go home,” friend Richard Nelson told the newspaper. “It just made me think about how you can be enjoying your day one moment and gone the next. So unfair.”

Eight people were killed in Wednesday’s shooting, and a single suspect, Scott Dekraai, has been booked on suspicion of murder. He is being held without bail at Orange County Jail.

Seal Beach police said they will not release any of the victims’ names until Friday, but in a small community such as Seal Beach, the names of those who were killed -– as well as the lone survivor -– are becoming known.

The one survivor was Hattie Stretz, a 73-year-old retired nurse and community activist who was visiting her daughter at the salon at the time of the shooting. Her daughter, Laura Webb, was among those killed, according to friends.

Another possible victim was identified by a local youth soccer club, Beach Futbol Club, as Michelle Fast, wife of a team manager and mother of one of the players, according to a post on the club’s website.

Celebrities are accustomed to stalkers trying to get too close.

But the FBI on Wednesday accused a man of gleaning intimate details from the lives of several top actresses and singers — including nude photos — from 3,000 miles away.

Working from his home computer in Jacksonville, Fla., authorities say, Christopher Chaney, 35, allegedly hacked into the email accounts of such big names as Mila Kunis, Christina Aguilera and Scarlett Johansson.

And authorities say he did it the hard way. Mining details of the stars’ personal lives in celebrity magazine and websites as well as Twitter and Facebook posts, Chaney looked for potential passwords that would give him access to their accounts, the FBI said.

Document: Read the indictment

Once he cracked the password, officials charged, he hit a gold mine, gaining access to the stars’ address books as well as any photos and other files saved in their email accounts.

He used an email forwarding program that automatically sent a duplicate of any messages the stars received to his own account. So, even when the celebrities changed their passwords, he would know about it, officials said.

Chaney was arrested this week in Jacksonville on various hacking charges and faces up 121 years in prison if found guilty on all counts.

The arrest caps a yearlong FBI probe into celebrity hacking that has generated much interested in the Hollywood tabloid world. There were many theories about the identity of the hacker, with some speculating it was someone trying blackmail or embarrass the stars — or make money off the information.

But federal officials said Chaney appears to have acted alone and seemed to have no plans to contact the stars or sell his information.

FBI officials said the case underscores the changing nature of celebrity stalking in the computer age.

“The case brings us to a new word in expanding lexicon of cybercrime — ‘hackerrazzi,’ ” said Steven Martinez, assistant director in charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles field office. “We continue to receive complaints involving the targeting of high-profile figures.”

Manssor Arbabsiar, left, is accused of plotting to assassinate Saudi ambassador Adel Al-Jubeir

11:40 AM on 12th October 2011

An extraordinary terrorist plot has been foiled – which would have seen the Saudi Arabian ambassador to the U.S. murdered on American soil.

Agents of the Iranian government reportedly offered $1.5 million to a Mexican drug cartel to carry out the assassination of Adel Al-Jubeir in a busy Washington DC restaurant.

The terror plotters – who also planned to set off blasts at the Saudi and Israeli embassies in the city – told their Mexican contact they could provide ‘tons of opium’ to his gang.

But their contact, to whom they allegedly wired a $100,000 down payment for the killing, was in fact an undercover U.S. informant.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the ‘stranger than fiction’ plot ‘crosses a line’ in Iran’s state sponsorship of terrorism and will further isolate the Islamic republic.

Two men allegedly working for ‘factions of the Iranian government’ have been charged with the plot.

Manssor Arbabsiar, a 56-year-old U.S. citizen who also holds an Iranian passport, was arrested at JFK Airport in New York.

Asked about the potential loss of innocent life in the bombings, he said: ‘They want that guy done. If the hundred go with him, f**k ’em,’ court papers reported. He is now said to be facing life in prison if convicted.

Gholam Shakuri, whom authorities said was a member of the Quds Force, a branch of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, was also charged but is still at large.

Arbabsiar allegedly offered the $1.5 million bounty to a Mexican drug cartel for help with the assassination.

A third man named Abdul-Reza Shahlai is also accused of coordinating the alleged plot.

Shahlai, an Iranian official who is Arbabsiar’s cousin, has previously been accused of plotting an attack in Iraq which killed five U.S. soldiers.

WHO ARE THE SECRETIVE QUDS FORCE?

Iran’s secretive Quds Force is an elite brigade within Iran’s revolutionary Guard.

The Guards, with their own navy, air force and command structure separate from the regular armed forces, are seen as fiercely loyal to the supreme leader.

Within the Guards, Quds are tasked with ‘exporting’ the Iranian revolution abroad.

Said to contain 15,000 troops, the force has been linked to operations in Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon, North Africa and now North America.

In the past, the U.S. has accused Quds of arming Iraqi militants with deadly bomb-making material, building up an extensive network in the war-torn country, recruiting Iraqis and supporting not only Shiite militias but also Shiites allied with Washington.

Attorney General Eric Holder said the plot to kill the Saudi ambassador and bomb embassies was a flagrant violation of U.S. and international law and that the U.S. would hold Iran accountable.

Mr Holder added that the suspects expressed ‘utter disregard for collateral damage’ in the planned bombings on U.S. soil.

FBI Director Robert Mueller said many lives could have been lost in the plot.

Mrs Clinton added: ‘This really, in the minds of many diplomats and government officials, crosses a line that Iran needs to be held to account for.’

She said the plot was ‘stranger than fiction’.

‘The idea that they would attempt to go to a Mexican drug cartel to solicit murder-for-hire to kill the Saudi ambassador, nobody could make that up, right?’ she said.

Clinton said the scheme ‘creates a potential for international reaction that will further isolate Iran, that will raise questions about what they’re up to, not only in the United States and Mexico’.

She said both she and President Barack Obama were calling world leaders to inform them of the developments.

‘We are actively engaged in a very concerted diplomatic outreach to many capitals, to the UN in New York, to not only to explain what happened so we can try to pre-empt any efforts by Iran to be successful in what would be their denial and their efforts to try to deflect responsibility but so that we also enlist more countries in working together against what is becoming a clearer and clearer threat [from Iran],’ Clinton said.

‘We want to reassure our friends that the complaints against Iran are well-founded,’ she added.

President Barack Obama, meanwhile, phoned the Saudi ambassador to offer support and underline the solidarity between the two countries.

He is said to have told Adel Al-Jubeir that the plot was a ‘flagrant violation’ of U.S. and international law.

In addition, at a meeting with his national security team on Tuesday morning, Mr Obama is said to have thanked them for their exceptional work in disrupting the plot.

Saudi officials said the government would be expected to ‘take measures’ after the ‘great provocation’.

TIMELINE TO MURDER: HOW THE PLOT ESCALATED

May 24: Arbabsiar first meets someone posing as an associate of a drug trafficking cartel in Mexico, who was actually a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration informant codenamed CS-1. Arbabsiar asked about the informant’s knowledge of explosives and explained he was interested in attacking a Saudi embassy.

June 2: Arbabsiar returned to Mexico and held more meetings with the informant in late June and early July. He allegedly said his associates in Iran had discussed a number of ‘violent missions’ including the murder of the Saudi ambassador to Washington, Adel Al-Jubeir.

July 14: Arbabsiar meets CS-1 again, they discuss plot details – how four men and a payment of $1.5 million are needed.

July 17: The pair meet again in Mexico. CS-1 says one member of his gang has already carried out surveillance on the ambassador and they allegedly discussed bombing a restaurant in the United States where the ambassador frequently dined.

August 1 and 9: Arbabsiar makes two overseas wire transfers ‘totalling approximately $100,000’

September 28: Arbabsiar flies to Mexico, is refused entry and is sent back to JFK

September 29: Arrested at JFK by federal agents

October 4-5: Arbabsiar, who has been in U.S. custody since his arrest, made phone calls which were monitored by U.S. law enforcement agents to Shakuri, described as a member of the Quds Force, a branch of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. He is believed to be based in Iran.

Shakuri allegedly confirmed to Arbabsiar the plot should move forward as quickly as possible, stating: ‘Just do it quickly, it’s late’

‘After this incident many in the kingdom will expect the kingdom to take measures, the least of which will be to pull the Saudi ambassador from Iran,’ said Abdullah Alshammari, a government official in Riyadh.

‘In the opinion of Saudi decision makers, this situation is not going to pass easily.

‘There were always problems with Iran and Saudi Arabia, what is new now is that America is involved… The fact that the Saudi ambassador was the target in the United States, I believe this will mean the kingdom and the United States will take a joint decision together.’

He added: ‘An ambassador of the level of Adel Al-Jubeir, who was an adviser to the royal court, that is a great provocation for Saudi Arabia and therefore we expect that the kingdom will take steps in this matter.’

The plot comes amidst rising tensions between Iran and the U.S. and Saudi Arabia after the Saudi government last year attempted to build an alliance to push back against Iran’s alleged aggression in the region.

President Barack Obama was first briefed on the plot in June, said White House spokesman Tommy Vietor.

‘The disruption of this plot is a significant achievement by our intelligence and law enforcement agencies, and the president is enormously grateful for their exceptional work in this instance and countless others,’ Vietor said.

Relations were already sour between the Islamic republic and Washington, which accuses Tehran of backing terrorism and pursuing nuclear arms.

Holder declined to say what measures the Obama administration would take, but said they would be coming soon.

‘In addition to holding these individual conspirators accountable for their alleged role in this plot, the United States is committed to holding Iran accountable for its actions,’ he said.

The 21-page criminal complaint, unsealed today, identifies the two alleged plotters as Manssor Arbabsiar and Gholam Shakuri.

Both are originally from Iran but Arbabsiar, 56, is a naturalised U.S. citizen.

Arbabsiar was arrested on September 29 in New York at JFK airport, according to Holder.

He was working for the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard and had confessed to a plot.

Officials said he had flown from Iran to Mexico City, via Frankfurt, but had been refused entry to Mexico and had been put on a plane to New York.

Mexico worked closely with U.S. authorities to help foil the alleged plot – issuing an immigration alert on Arbabsiar after U.S. authorities told Mexican counterparts that he was the subject of an arrest warrant.

Julian Ventura, undersecretary for North America, said the alert prompted Mexican immigration officials to turn Arbabsiar away when he tried to enter Mexico on September 28.

Arbabsiar was arrested the next day when he arrived at New York’s Kennedy International Airport.

Ventura said: ‘From the outset, Mexico and the United States exchanged information and acted together.

‘The government of Mexico reiterates its full commitment to international cooperation to prevent and combat terrorism and condemns any attempt by any individual, group or international player to commit actions of this nature from our national territory.’

After his arrest, Arbabsiar made phone calls to Shakuri in Iran which were monitored. During the calls, Shakuri allegedly confirmed that Arbabsiar should move forward with the plot to murder the Ambassador and that he should accomplish the task as quickly as possible, stating on October 5, 2011, ‘Just do it quickly, it’s late.’

Bombings of the Saudi and Israeli embassies in Buenos Aires and Argentina were also discussed as part of the plan, according to officials.

Shakuri, who is based in Iran, remains at large. He is a member of Iran’s Quds Force, a special operations unit of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which sponsors and promotes terrorist activities abroad.

The Treasury, meanwhile, identified the Iranian official coordinating the plot as, Abdul-Reza Shahlai, a cousin of Arbabsiar.

Shahlai was three years ago identified as a terrorist by the U.S. Government for organising violence in Iraq.

He is said to have worked with the anti-U.S. Mahdi Army to attack soldiers.

In one of the attacks he is alleged to have planned in January 2007, up to a dozen fighters infiltrated a government building in Karbala, dressed as American security officers.

PLOT SPARKS U.S. TERROR ALERT

The State Department is warning Americans around the world of the potential for terrorist attacks against U.S. interests following the alleged plot to assassinate Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to the United States.

In a new worldwide travel alert issued late on Tuesday, the department said the foiled scheme could be a sign that Iran has adopted a ‘more aggressive focus’ on terrorist activity.

It said Iranian-sponsored attacks could include strikes in the United States, where the alleged plot against the Saudi envoy was supposed to have taken place, as well as other countries.

‘The Department of State alerts U.S. citizens of the potential for anti-U.S. actions following the disruption of a plot, linked to Iran, to commit a significant terrorist act in the United States,’ it said in the warning.

‘The U.S. government assesses that this Iranian-backed plan to assassinate the Saudi ambassador may indicate a more aggressive focus by the Iranian government on terrorist activity against diplomats from certain countries, to include possible attacks in the United States.’

They opened fire, killing one U.S. soldier. Four others were abducted and found shot dead soon after.

The case looking into the Mexican cartel plot, called Operation Red Coalition, started in May when Iranian-American Arbabsiar from Corpus Christi, Texas, sought help for the assassination from a Mexican drug cartel and inadvertently approached a U.S. informant.

Arbabsiar allegedly wired $100,000 to the informant as a down payment for the $1.5million assassination fee.

He told the informant that his contacts in the Iranian government could provide ‘tons of opium’ to the drugs cartel.

According to the complaint, Arbabsiar claimed he was being ‘directed by high-ranking members of the Iranian government’ including a cousin who was ‘a member of the Iranian army but did not wear a uniform’.

He told agents he was recruited and funded by men he understood to be senior officials in Iran’s Qods Force.

He allegedly said these Iranian officials were aware of and approved of the plot.

It is unclear if Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was aware of the plot. His spokesman laughed off the accusation.

Ali Akbar Javanfekr told CNN: ‘I think the U.S. government is busy fabricating a new scenario and history has shown both the U.S. government and the CIA have a lot of experience in fabricating these scenarios and this is just the latest one.

‘I think their goal is to reach the American public. They want to take the public’s mind off the serious domestic problems they’re facing these days and scare them with fabricated problems outside the country.’

Javanfekr said if the Iranian government verifies that these individuals are indeed Iranian citizens, it will make every effort to help them.

IRNA, the official Iranian news agency, called the accusations ‘America’s new propaganda scenario’ against the Tehran government.

Alizreza Miryusefi, the press attaché at Iran’s mission to the United Nations, said the accusation was ‘totally baseless’.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said the allegation is a ‘prefabricated scenario’.

President Obama, who is on a visit to Pittsburgh, said that foiling the plan was a 'significant achievement' by intelligence and law enforcement agencies
President Obama, who is on a visit to Pittsburgh, said that foiling the plan was a ‘significant achievement’ by intelligence and law enforcement agencies

‘These old-fashioned behaviours are based on the long-standing hostile American-Zionist policies and are ridiculous show in line with scenarios to provoke division,’ he told Iran’s Fars news agency.

Both defendants are charged with conspiracy to murder a foreign official; conspiracy to engage in foreign travel and use of interstate and foreign commerce facilities in the commission of murder-for-hire; conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction (explosives); and conspiracy to commit an act of international terrorism transcending national boundaries.

Arbabsiar is further charged with an additional count of foreign travel and use of interstate and foreign commerce facilities in the commission of murder-for-hire.

On Tuesday, at a largely procedural court appearance in Manhattan, he was told he would be held without bail.

The Treasury Department said it is imposing economic penalties against four people who are linked to the plot, including Arbabsiar and Shakuri.

Treasury Undersecretary David Cohen said the financial transactions at the heart of the alleged plot ‘lay bare the risk that banks and other institutions face in doing business with Iran’.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry condemned the plot.

Spokesman Ramin Mihman-parast said: ‘Such worn-out tricks which are upon old and hostile policies of the U.S. and the Zionist regime is a comic show in direction of making special scenarios with the aim of sowing discord.’

WHY WOULD IRAN TRY TO KILL THE SAUDI AMBASSADOR ON U.S. SOIL?

The alleged plot to murder the Saudi ambassador is most likely an attempt by Iran to spread instability in the Middle East and increase its own regional influence.

The Saudi regime is said to have been forming an anti-Iran ‘alliance of necessity’ with Israel this year – to counter the threat to their dominance in the region posed by the Arab Spring uprisings and Iran’s nuclear weapons programme.

The two countries have for years been locked in a so-called cold war, with both trying to increase their political clout over neighbouring countries.

American ally Saudi Arabia’s interest lies in preserving the regional status quo and it has for years been using its vast wealth to shore up its friends in the region.

The Saudi royal family’s oil billions and the country’s lack of democracy mean it is most interested in keeping the peace in the region – lest any disruption encourage its citizens into an uprising similar to those seen in Egypt, Syria, Yemen and Bahrain.

American enemy Iran, which is also far from democratic, thrives on instability and has much to gain from creating power vacuums that it can use to promote its ideology by giving financial and military support to groups which share its political and religious beliefs.

One of the most recent examples was the backing of Shi’ite militias in Western Iraq following the U.S. invasion in 2003.

Radical President Mahmoud Ahmidinejad’s regime also has complex ties to Hamas in the Palestinian West Bank of Israel.

The two countries are also divided by religion, with Iran the historic home of Shi’ite muslims in the region while Saudi Arabia is home to Mecca and is overwhelmingly Sunni.

But the two countries are predominantly locked in a battle for power and influence, with Saudi Arabian fears over a Iran’s nuclear programme featuring particularly highly, rather than a struggle over religious ideology.

He had been on the run for four decades. He escaped from prison when Richard Nixon was in the White House, joined the Black Liberation Army in Detroit, hijacked a plane and (in)famously demanded that FBI agents deliver ransom money in bathing suits. And they did.

Now, after a manhunt spanning three continents that often appeared to run cold, the FBI has finally found George Wright.

At age 68, he was living quietly in the resort of Sintra near Lisbon in Portugal when he was arrested Monday.

The United States is seeking his extradition from Portugal to serve the remainder of a 15- to 30-year sentence for murder. Portuguese judicial authorities could not be reached Tuesday for details of the extradition process.

Wright is fighting extradition, a U.S. federal agent said, and his next court appearance in Portugal is in about two weeks.

Wright’s life story reads like an international crime novel. In 1962, at the age of 19, he and three associates carried out a series of robberies in New Jersey. Wright and another man shot and killed a World War II veteran in a gas station robbery in Farmingdale.

He was arrested soon afterward and, after pleading no defense, was sentenced to 15 to 30 years in prison. But in 1970, Wright escaped from Bayside State Prison in Leesburg, New Jersey, reportedly stealing the warden’s car to make his getaway.

Wright made his way to Detroit, then a hotbed of militant black politics, and joined the Black Liberation Army. (He is also reputed to have made some money during this period as a part-time model, using an alias.)

On July 31, 1972, Wright and four other members of the Black Liberation Army went to Detroit airport and boarded Delta Flight 841 for Miami. Wright was dressed as a priest and carried a handgun in a hollowed-out Bible.

Airport security was different in those days. Various Palestinian groups were hijacking planes regularly, as were individuals keen to go to Cuba. Altogether, the U.S. Department of Transportation recorded 364 hijackings worldwide between 1968 and 1972: more than one a week on average.

The hijackers of Delta 841 — three men and two women accompanied by three children — seized the plane as it approached Miami. The FBI says “subsequent investigation identified Wright as one of the hijackers.”

Rezwan Ferdaus, 26, is a US citizen.Plot
September 29th, 2011

The FBI arrested a Massachusetts man Wednesday in an alleged plot to blow up the U.S. Capitol and the Pentagon in which authorities say he provided “step-by-step” instructions on attacking Washington with drone-like, remote-controlled model airplanes.

Rezwan Ferdaus, 26, a U.S. citizen and Northeastern University physics graduate from Ashland, Mass., had been approached in an undercover FBI operation after an informant came forward. Ferdaus allegedly told undercover personnel posing as Al Qaeda members that he had scoped out a site next to the Potomac River to load small aircraft with C-4 plastic explosives and use GPS equipment to remotely fly them over the Capitol.

He also allegedly created components for improvised explosive devices to be used against U.S. troops in Iraq, and the undercover workers told him his devices had killed Americans there. According to an FBI affidavit, he replied, “That was exactly what I wanted.”

The affidavit calls those participating in the sting “undercover employees of the FBI,” not FBI agents.

Authorities said the public was never in danger and that they shut down the sting after they had enough evidence to charge Ferdaus. He was arrested in Framingham, Mass., after undercover workers delivered materials they said he requested, including grenades, six machine guns and what Ferdaus allegedly believed to be explosives.

FBI Agent Gary C. Cacace, the lead agent in the case, said in the federal court affidavit that Ferdaus sought jihad against the U.S. as early as last year, and considered Americans “enemies of Allah.” At one point, Ferdaus allegedly told the undercover workers that he was so driven, “I just can’t stop; there is no other choice for me.”

Ferdaus appeared in federal court in Worcester, Mass., on charges of trying to destroy a national defense facility and the Capitol and attempting to provide material support to Al Qaeda. He was ordered to remain in custody, and was expected to enter a not-guilty plea when he returns to court Monday. If convicted on all charges, he could face up to 55 years in prison.

“Mr. Ferdaus had long planned to commit violent acts against our country,” said Carmen M. Ortiz, the U.S. attorney in Massachusetts. “That plan was thwarted.”

Cacace’s affidavit included these allegations: Ferdaus last year began planning the attacks using remote-controlled model aircraft carrying explosives. He gave the undercover workers two flash drives with step-by-step instructions on how to hit the Capitol and Pentagon from the air. He said he would use three planes and five assistants, and called himself the amir, or commander.

Despite Ferdaus’ claim of enlisting others in his plot, federal authorities said, they considered him a “lone wolf” and were not investigating anyone else.

“We’ve eliminated the threat,” said one official, who asked not to be identified because the case was continuing.

With money provided by the FBI’s undercover workers, the affidavit says, Ferdaus “researched, ordered and acquired necessary components for his attack plans.” He allegedly acquired one remote-controlled plane, 25 pounds of C-4 explosives, six fully automatic AK-47 assault rifles, and grenades. He allegedly created an alias, Dave Winfield, rented a storage locker and opened a PayPal account to create a cover story. Although single and childless, he told a Florida distributor the plane was for his son, the affidavit says.

Ferdaus allegedly built the improvised explosive devices he thought were for Iraq with seven cellphones after soldering wires in the back covers to act as electrical switches for the explosives. According to the affidavit, he told the undercover workers he wanted “to kill the kafir [nonbeliever] armies and … as many people as possible.”

His alleged motivation remains unclear. According to the affidavit, the FBI learned of him through a confidential witness who stepped forward. During Ferdaus’ meetings with undercover personnel, he allegedly spoke of wanting to “decapitate” the U.S. government’s “military center” and to “severely disrupt … the head and heart of the snake.”

He allegedly wanted to hit the Pentagon first, saying, “Once we hit the military, we can take care of the politicians.”

“It would be nice,” he allegedly added, “to gun down some politicians.”

Dramatic audiotape from the police takedown of Randall Hopley on Tuesday reveals police were concerned — at least for a few moments — that he may have had an accomplice with him when he was arrested.

In the audio from the police radio, officers can be heard shouting moments after Hopley was discovered in an abandoned cabin at an old cement plant in the Crowsnest Lake, Alta., area by a police officer and police dog.

According to police, Hopley tried to make a run for it, heading for a nearby gravel pit, but was quickly taken down by the police dog.

“We got him. We got him,” the unidentified officer can be heard shouting into the radio.

“We got him in custody — end of the block — bring up our car,” he shouts.

“Keep hovering, looking for a second. Look for a second,” he shouts, referring to an RCMP helicopter in the area overhead.

Later on Tuesday, police made it clear they believe Hopley was alone at the time of his capture.

Injured by canine takedown

Hopley, 46, made his first court appearance Wednesday in Cranbrook, B.C., 70 kilometres southwest of the town of Sparwood, which was gripped in fear for a week after three-year-old Kienan Hebert was taken from his home.

Hopley is accused of abducting Kienan from his home in Sparwood last Wednesday. Kienan was returned unharmed to his family home on Sunday morning.

Hopley’s lawyer William Thorne said outside court on Wednesday that his client was injured slightly in the takedown by the police dog.

“I understand that he was taken down by a dog, so he’s somewhat hurt, injured, but not too seriously. He’s also very tired,” said Thorne.

Hopley is charged with kidnapping, abduction of a child under 14 and breaking and entering. He’s also been charged with two counts of breach of probation.

The judge ordered Hopley to be held in custody while he undergoes a psychiatric evaluation to determine if he is fit to stand trial.

Thorne said Hopley has health issues “of various kinds,” but it will be up to doctors to decide whether he has mental-health problems.

Highly educated young man: Suspected bank fraudster Kweku Adoboli

12:34 AM on 16th September 2011

A suspected rogue trader accused of a staggering £1.3billion fraud told friends he needed ‘a miracle’ days before he was arrested.

Kweku Adoboli, 31, posted a desperate last message on Facebook as he tried to recover enormous losses  he had run up through  illegal trading.

Detectives detained Adoboli, who works for Swiss banking giant UBS, during a 3.30am raid yesterday at his luxury London flat.

The Ghanaian, who was privately educated in Britain and is the son of a retired UN worker, is accused of being responsible for the biggest loss ever accrued by a single trader based in London.

The £1.3billion figure easily dwarfs the £827million lost by rogue trader Nick Leeson, the man behind the collapse of Barings bank in 1995.

It equates to about the same amount UBS is seeking to save by cutting 3,500 jobs worldwide.

Speculation was mounting that he may have been caught out after the Swiss Central Bank unexpectedly devalued the franc last week, producing mammoth losses on one of his currency trades.

It was then that Adoboli’s final Facebook message, believed to have been left on Tuesday, September 6, read: ‘Need a miracle.’

Adoboli’s boss John Hughes is reported to have quit his job in the aftermath of the scandal. Sources said he would have faced serious questions about supervision of staff. He could not be reached for comment last night.

UBS is understood to have discovered the huge loss late on Wednesday afternoon. City of London Police commander Ian Dyson said the force was tipped off by UBS at 1am yesterday.

Within three hours, detectives had entered the HQ of UBS and had also arrested Adoboli, who according to sources was a ‘work-hard, play-hard’ trader who enjoyed the company of a series of attractive women at his flat in Whitechapel, East London.

Sources said he earned around £200,000 a year, plus up to £400,000 more in bonuses.

Adoboli was formally arrested on suspicion of fraud by abuse of position, and was still in custody last night. Police are liaising closely with the Crown Prosecution Service and a decision on charges could be made over the weekend.

He was detained on the third anniversary of the collapse of U.S. investment bank Lehman Brothers, and just three days after an independent report called for tighter regulation of British banks, to stop potentially catastrophic ‘casino’ banking.

His arrest stunned the City and there were calls last night for recommendations made by the Independent Banking Commission, chaired by Sir John Vickers, to be implemented more quickly.

Lord Oakeshott, a leading Lib Dem peer and a professional investment manager, said: ‘This reminds us how much toxic banking risk remains in the system, and how urgent radical reform is. The problem is that big investment banks are full of rogue traders: It is what they do.’

Rogue traders act independently of colleagues (often recklessly), harming both clients and the firm they work for. In most cases this type of trading is high risk and can create enormous losses.

As police questioned Adoboli, it was unclear how he was allegedly able to lose such eye-watering sums without being detected by UBS’s risk management team.

Sources said he would have had to exercise ‘considerable criminal energy’ to conceal his ‘unauthorised’ dealings.

Instead of confessing immediately, he might have concealed the catastrophe from his bosses and doubled his bets in an attempt to re-coup the losses.

Sources confirmed that inquiries are focusing on the Delta One trading desk that Adoboli worked on.

It is believed the team took bets on tiny movements in equity trades using a complex mathematical formula.

The type of trade is the same as the one used by Jérôme Kerviel, the rogue trader who amassed losses of 4.9billion euros at Société Générale in 2008.

THE CURSED WEEK IN SEPTEMBER: HOW MAJOR BANKS HAVE FALLEN ON SAME DATE

The scandal broke in what has been a jinxed week for the banking world in recent years.

Four years ago, Northern Rock’s dire financial situation was exposed as details of the bank’s request for an emergency loan from the Bank of England were leaked by the BBC’s Robert Peston on September 13.

As the crisis deepened, the Government stepped in to rescue the bank – which remains under State control to this day.

A year later – on September 15 2008 – global investment bank Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy – the largest in American history – triggering a panic which brought the global economy to its knees.

In a brief statement UBS said that no client positions had been affected. But the company, which has 6,000 staff in the UK, saw its shares slide 10 per cent.

Adoboli joined UBS in 2006 as a trainee investment adviser. He took on a more senior role as a trade support analyst in 2007 before assuming his present role in one of the banking world’s most esoteric trading areas.

He is listed as director of Exchange Traded Funds (ETF) and Delta-1 Trading at UBS Investment Bank in his profile on LinkedIn, the social networking site for professionals.

ETFs are an investment fund traded on stock exchanges, much like stocks, which holds assets such as stocks, commodities, or bonds.

Last night, speaking at his home in Ghana, Adoboli’s father John, a retired UN worker, told the Daily Mail: ‘It’s an unfortunate situation and we’re worried because we’re a decent and hardworking family, and so is Kweku.

‘My utmost desire at this time is to get an opportunity to speak with him. I’d like to find out from him what happened and how he found himself in this situation.’

Oswald Grübel, the UBS chief executive, said that he would ‘spare no effort to establish how it happened’.

In a memo to staff, the German-born banking boss said: ‘The matter is still being investigated, but we currently estimate the loss on the trades to be around 2 billion US dollars. It is possible that this could lead UBS to report a loss for the third quarter of 2011. No client positions were affected.

‘We understand that you have already had to contend with unfavourable, volatile markets for some time now.’

He added: ‘We want to reassure you that we, together with the rest of the management, are working closely with the Investment Bank’s management and risk and controlling to get to the bottom of the matter as quickly as possible, and will spare no effort to establish exactly what has happened.’

Champagne, girls and an obsession for making money

Kweku Adoboli has always believed life is about winning and losing. He certainly knew how to win. At his desk in the City of London, at home and into the early hours, he dreamed up every conceivable way of making money.

They ranged from scouring the internet to make a few quick pounds buying and selling some online bargain, to pulling off a spectacular deal that would net him and his superiors at UBS profits they could count in millions.

But long before detectives arrived to arrest him at 3.30am yesterday, he had also discovered what it felt like to lose – in his case a staggering £1.3billion.

Party boy: Adoboli, right, smiles with friends in a picture of a night out posted in an album on FacebookParty boy: Adoboli, right, smiles with friends in a picture of a night out posted in an album on Facebook

A highly educated young man from a respectable background in Ghana, in some respects Adoboli lived the free-wheeling lifestyle of the archetypal City trader.

He mixed champagne with takeaway pizzas, and his parties were notoriously riotous. But he also frequently worked through the night, doing what his bosses paid him to do – take risks.

ROGUE TRADER WHO BROUGHT DOWN A BRITISH BANK

Risky business: Nick Leeson as a trader, his dealings brought down Britain's oldest Merchant Bank

If previous rogue traders are anything to go by, notoriety and possibly even a Hollywood film await Kweku Adoboli if it is proved he is behind the £1.3 billion UBS fallout.

Nick Leeson, pictured in his trading days, hit the headlines in 1995 when he single-handedly destroyed the 233-year-old Barings Bank, which proudly counted the Queen as a client.

A Watford schoolboy-turned-City whizzkid, Leeson’s early career was a success, quickly making an impression with Barings and being promoted to the trading floor.

He was appointed manager of a new operation in futures markets on the Singapore Monetary Exchange (SIMEX) and was making millions for Barings Bank by betting on the future direction of the Nikkei Index, his website says.

But things began to unravel when he started making losses and set up a secret account to hide them.

The trader began taking more risks to recoup his losses but problems spiralled out of control and he fled, leaving behind a devastating financial hole and a note on his desk saying: “I’m sorry.”

He was eventually arrested in Frankfurt, Germany, where he tried to escape extradition to Singapore.

He failed and was sentenced to six and a half years by a Singapore court.

Leeson eventually wrote a book about his experiences which became a Hollywood film starring Ewan McGregor and Anna Friel.

According to colleagues, Adoboli – the ex-public schoolboy son of a retired senior United Nations executive – was more than a flash trader motivated purely by conspicuous consumption. They said it was making the money that drove him, not spending it.

He worked under extreme pressure, making instant decisions with fortunes at stake and taking bets on tiny movements in equity trades. He also gambled on which way currency would move, studying trends and collating information through the night and predicting what would happen when the markets reopened. What appears to have happened is that the Swiss Franc moved quicker than he did, and downwards.

Born in the thriving Ghanaian coastal city of Tema to affluent parents, his talent for solving mathematical puzzles was clear from an early age.

His father – a much respected UN official who has since retired – decided to send his talented son, along with his other children to boarding schools in the UK.

Adoboli adapted well to live in one of the boarding houses at Ackworth School, a fee-paying school in Pontefract, West Yorkshire, set up by Quakers in 1779.

Indeed, he was so well regarded by teachers that he was eventually made head boy. In a profile on the school website a teenage Adoboli wrote of his obsession with ‘sport, music, good reading and material things, (and girls as well).’

He also set out his ambition to be an athlete, writing: ‘If life is all about winning and losing then how can sport not be about winning and losing.’

After school, Adoboli toyed with becoming a chemical engineer before accepting an offer from the University of Nottingham to study a degree in E-commerce and digital business.

While at university he helped plan drunken nights out for new students, which he described as ‘an amazing opportunity for hundreds of students to meet at a jamboree of parties’.

After graduating in the summer of 2003, he lived in Nottingham for a while before moving to London where he relished the high life of the capital.

It was in March of 2006 that he joined UBS as a trainee.

In London, Adoboli threw himself into his work. He spent hours at his computer looking for minor investments and bargains, often Tweeting his triumphs so others could cash in on his research. ‘Check out this article!’ said one Tweet, giving an internet link. ‘I made $360 today!’

He also slipped easily into the cultural and social life of his adopted home in London’s East End. He was a familiar figure at the trendy Boundary complex of restaurants and bars in Shoreditch – yet also a big fan of KFC and Pizza Hut takeaways.

FIVE TRADERS WHO BET THE BANK.. AND LOST

  1. In 2002 John Rusnak, a currency trader at US bank Allfirst, based in Baltimore, and then a subsidy of Allied Irish Bank, pleaded guilty to fraud amounting to $691million (£345million). He was jailed for seven-and-a-half years.
  2. Toshihide Iguchi, a former car dealer, lost more than $1billion (£500million) at Japanese bank Daiwa, in fraudulent trading over an 11-year period from 1984 onwards.
  3. In 1991 the Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI) was seized by regulators, after auditors reported huge losses from illegal loans to corporate insiders and trades. The bank collapsed with debts of more than $16billion (£8billion) and about 250,000 savers lost money.
  4. Yasuo Hamanaka, a trader at Sumitomo Corporation, one of Japan’s largest banks, lost the company $2.6billion in unrecorded copper market trades. Known as ‘Mr Five Percent’ for the share of the global copper market he controlled, he was jailed for eight years in 1996.
  5. In one of Britain’s biggest banking scandals, 90,000 investors were left out of pocket after Morgan Grenfell fund manager Peter Young, who controlled £1.5billion of funds, broke City rules by investing in high-risk unlisted European securities.

According to former landlord Philip Octave, he was a good tenant. He paid £1,000 a week for a ground floor and basement flat in a former Jewish soup kitchen in Spitalfields, less than a mile from his office.

Pugh banking cartoon

Mr Octave said: ‘He’s a very nice guy, very polite, he would speak to anyone. No one had a bad word to say about him.’

However, a neighbour said Adoboli had regular and noisy parties towards the end of his time there. ‘I would sometimes scream out in the middle of the night to tell him to turn it down,’ he said. ‘He would get DJs for his parties to play house music – they were really extravagant affairs. There would be 50 to 100 people with some even spilling out on to the street.’

Four months ago Adoboli moved to a gated modern development in nearby Whitechapel.

Neighbour William Pitt, 39, an Australian banker, said he worked nights, ate fast food and had a string of glamorous female visitors.

‘He was always tired,’ he said. ‘He was coming in when I was going out. He was obviously doing the night shift. He always had plenty of women around his apartment. They were all beauties.

‘Recently we were talking about the markets and I asked if he was getting a pasting. He replied, “It’s a s*** fight”.’

A few weeks ago Adoboli lent Mr Pitt a copy of The Wolf Of Wall Street, by Jordan Belfort. It tells the story of a young trader who makes piles of money … loses it … and ends up on the wrong side of the law.

A 29-year-old Buena Park man has been arrested for allegedly biting off a man’s eyebrow during a fight, chewing it and spitting it out,  police said Wednesday.

“It’s a pretty good chunk … about the size of an egg,” Cpl. Andy Luong of the Buena Park Police Department told The Times.

Luis Miguel Aguilar was arrested by detectives Monday. He was being held in the Buena Park Jail and is expected to be arraigned Thursday on one count of felony mayhem at the North Justice Center in Fullerton, Luong said.

The victim, a 41-year-old Placentia man, will require reconstructive surgery as a result of the fight that broke out Friday night at a party in the 7500 block of El Cerro Drive, Luong said. The victim’s name was not released.

Luong said the two men did not know each other.

A Sacramento man has been taken into custody for allegedly taking big bites out a pet python, which was reported recovering after surgery.

David Elmer Senk, 54, was booked into Sacramento County Jail on suspicion of unlawfully maiming/mutilating a reptile. Bail was set at $10,000.

Sacramento police were called to the 3600 block of Marysville Boulevard in Del Paso Heights about 6:30 p.m. Thursday on a call about a man who had been assaulted and was not responsive. When they arrived, they found Senk.

While speaking with Senk (photo below), a citizen got the officers’ attention and told them that Senk had just taken two large bites out of their small live python. Animal control was called to the scene and Senk was taken to jail. The snake was not in good condition when handed over to animal control officers, police said.

However, she was reported on the mend today.

“She’s doing well,” said Gina E. Knepp, acting animal care services manager for the City of Sacramento. “We did surgery on her last night and I think we saved her life.”

The snake is being treated after receiving stitches. The python lost a couple of ribs, Knepp said.

The snake is drinking a lot of water and receiving antibiotics.

Police said that Senk was “an acquaintance” of the snake owner. Senk allegedly asked to hold the snake and then bit into the repitile twice.

Pilot David Hudson (right) was overflying Steven Lynn's (center) home when they spotted two men in Lynn's driveway. They helped police chase down the burglary suspects by following them from above.

September 1st, 2011

David Hudson has seen it all working the scenes of car wrecks and other emergencies on his job as a medevac helicopter pilot. But a flight that started as a summer joy ride in a borrowed Cessna 172 now rates as “the wildest experience I’ve ever had,” he said.

Local police are calling the flight that began as a pleasure outing on Aug. 23 the “eye in the sky” that helped them apprehend two burglary suspects. And a first-time passenger aboard the Cessna is very glad that he asked Hudson to point out his Craighead County, Ark., home from the air.

Hudson, of Jonesboro, and two buddies had been planning a fishing trip to a favorite spot on the Mississippi River about 60 miles away near Memphis, Tenn. They wondered if the river might be too low to make the trip worthwhile.

Hudson, a 6,000-hour working pilot, suggested that they use a Skyhawk owned by his friend Barry Jackson to fly over and check river conditions. They departed from the Jonesboro Municipal Airport.

Returning from the Mississippi, passenger Steven Lynn made a request familiar to many pilots giving sightseeing flights: Lynn asked if Hudson could fly them over Lynn’s house.

Like many first-time fliers, Lynn had some trouble orienting himself in the air, so he didn’t recognize his property right away, Hudson recalled in an interview.

Hudson showed Lynn where the house was. He also pointed out a white pickup truck parked nearby.

“There are some guys loading up some stuff in a truck right in your driveway,” he said.

Under the circumstances, Hudson considers Lynn’s reaction pretty normal.

“He started freaking out, like anybody would,” the pilot said.

At first Lynn wanted Hudson to land on the road. Hudson rejected that plan. Then Lynn began making calls on his cell phone, to police and to an uncle who lives a short distance away. As the Cessna circled overhead, Lynn’s uncle pulled up in the driveway and confronted the strangers.

The men on the ground tried to talk their way out of the situation until Lynn’s uncle informed them that Lynn was watching the scene unfold from the Skyhawk, which was circling at about 1,800 feet.

That’s when the men started throwing the heavy air conditioning units they had loaded from their vehicle. Then they “went out across the yard, through a ditch onto the gravel road and just took off,” Hudson recalled.

The fishermen gave chase—that is to say, after Hudson overtook the truck, he slowed the airplane down enough so that eventually “we were staying with them really good, running side by side.” (For the detail-oriented reader, that meant adding carb heat, setting power at 2,000 rpm, and selecting 20 degrees of flaps. By now Hudson also had descended to 1,000 feet, an appropriate altitude for ground-reference maneuvers). They were also capturing cell phone video of the chase.

The alleged burglars could run, but they couldn’t hide from the Skyhawk that was flying above the flat farm country. Even when the getaway vehicle passed a rare tree line, the airborne pursuers had no trouble keeping the fleeing pickup in sight.

“The dirt was just going everywhere,” Hudson said.

Lynn relayed the truck’s turns—and a stop-sign violation—to police converging from all directions. Two state troopers and four county police stopped the suspects on Highway 158, about six miles from the airport.

Hudson landed the Cessna in Jonesboro and quickly tied down the aircraft. Lynn’s vehicle was parked at the airport. They jumped in and headed for the spot.

When Hudson and Lynn got there, “They still had them there in the back of the cop car,” he said.

According to news reports, police charged two Jonesboro men with residential burglary and theft of property. Police credited the “eye in the sky” with helping them nab the suspects.

It all happened so fast that the possibility never occurred to Hudson that the men down below might be armed. Missing from Lynn’s home, but not found in the truck by police, was a fully loaded automatic rifle, Hudson said.

Hudson said he has seen a lot in his work—but this was different. When flying an evacuation mission, you experience an initial rush of excitement after which “it all cools down and you’re just doing your job.”

This time, Hudson thinks he was probably influenced by the reactions of his nonpilot passengers, once the three men realized that they had happened over a crime scene.

“The adrenaline got to me too. It really did,” he told AOPA. “Immediately you’re like, ‘Oh man, get those guys.’”

A Philadelphia police officer was charged with rape Wednesday after allegedly assaulting a woman while on duty, according to the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office.

Police Officer Keith Corley II was arrested and charged with rape, indecent assault, sexual assault and other related offenses. Corley, 27, has been with the police department for four years, according to the district attorney’s office.

According to CNN affiliate KYW, a 32-year-old woman claims she was waiting for a bus around 3 a.m. on August 11 when she spotted Corley and flagged him down for a ride.

The victim alleged Corley drove to an area in Cobbs Creek and forced her to perform a sex act, then dropped her off at the 69th Street Terminal.

That’s where the woman stopped a transit officer to report the attack, KYW reported.

“We are committed to rooting out those individuals who would violate the trust of the public and even commit crimes as a police officer. None of that is tolerable and we’ll take whatever action we need to take in order to rid our ranks of them,” Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey told KYW.

Ramsey suspended Corley for 30 days with the intent to dismiss, according to police.

Johnny Walter Bass said he was tired of his wife verbally berating him. So he woke up on Friday and shot her in the head, Houston police said.

Johnny Bass, 81, has been charged with the murder of his 74-year-old wife, Jewel Bass.

He told police that he and his wife had been having arguments over the last few years that escalated recently.

“He told us he couldn’t take it anymore,” Houston Police Department Sgt. Ben Williams said Tuesday. “He said he couldn’t take anymore of the bullying and the fighting.”

The couple each had health problems, and Jewel Bass’ complaints would normally be about money, Johnny Bass told investigators.

Neighbors in the couple’s subdivision in the 3600 block of Willowood, near Griggs, could hear them arguing, Williams said.

“They all knew that they were arguing a lot, and they could hear her yelling at him,” he said.

Johnny Bass told investigators that his wife made him feel shameful.

After an intense argument Thursday night, Bass had enough. He used his pistol to kill his wife the next morning, police said.

About 9 p.m. Sunday, police knocked on his door in response to a concerned call from a family member who said she had not heard from Jewel Bass.

Johnny Bass answered and told police that everything was fine at the home. When officers asked about his wife, Johnny Bass said she was in bed because he had shot her Friday morning.

Officers found Jewel Bass’ body lying in bed. Her husband admitted to killing her, Williams said.

“He had time to reflect on it,” Williams said of the two days that Johnny Bass left his wife’s body in bed. “He had realized what he had done.”

Two Orange County boys were in the custody of their mother Tuesday after their father was accused of throwing his 7-year-old son overboard from a boat after the boy would not stop crying, authorities said.

Sloane Briles, 35, of Irvine was booked on suspicion of child endangerment and resisting arrest. He was released Monday after posting bail.

Briles and his girlfriend were aboard the tour boat Queen on a cruise of Newport Harbor just before 2 p.m. Sunday when the couple got into an argument in front of his 6- and 7-year-old sons from a previous marriage, said Orange County sheriff’s spokesman Jim Amormino.

When the 7-year-old became upset Briles hit him several times, shocking and angering some of the tour boat’s 85 passengers. Witnesses said Briles told his son that if he didn’t stop crying, he would throw him overboard.

He then picked up the boy and tossed him over the front of the boat while it was moving, said Amormino, who described the boy as “a fair swimmer at best.”Briles appeared to have been drinking, Amormino said.

The father put the boy at risk of drowning, being run over by the boat or being hit by another vessel in the busy harbor, which was filled with boaters on the hot Sunday afternoon, Amormino said.

Luckily, three boats quickly came to his aid and he was pulled from the water. Briles also jumped in to retrieve the boy, but he had already been rescued.

Briles became combative and resisted arrest when sheriff’s deputies boarded the boat to take him into custody, authorities said. One deputy suffered minor injuries while wrestling him to the ground.

Authorities released the boys to their mother. Briles and his ex-wife divorced in 2007 after having two children.

Briles pleaded guilty in January to a misdemeanor for public intoxication last August, court records show.

William Walter Asher III

August 23, 2011     12:26 pm

For 36 years, fugitive William Walter Asher III lived life looking over his shoulder.

He made a brazen escape from a California prison camp, where he was serving a life sentence.

He assumed alias after alias. He raised a family in Alaska before returning to the Golden State as a trucker.

But his years on the run came to an end last week, when agents using phone records from his mother’s death bed finally caught up with him.

Billy Asher’s life of crime began in 1966 when he and three accomplices robbed a San Francisco bar, said  FBI Special Agent Steve Dupre.

During the robbery. a bartender was shot and beaten to death.

Asher, 20 at the time fled to Chicago but was captured a year later by the FBI. He was returned to California, where he was tried, convicted and sentenced to seven years to life in prison for his role in the killing.

With the help of a woman on the outside, Asher slipped out of Growlersburg Conservation Camp No. 33 in El Dorado County in 1975 and fled to Canada and Alaska.

Investigators later learned he assumed the alias David Donald Mcfee, worked as a long-haul trucker, married and raised a family. He eventually separated from his wife and disappeared again, leaving behind his frontier family. One of his daughters even contacted the FBI seeking information about his whereabouts.

The trail went cold for more than three decades, until his mother’s death in 2005. Before Mable Welch died, she had asked family members to help her use a “secret” phone number to call “Billy,” authorities said.

Equipped with this information, FBI agents collected cellphone records for Welch’s friends, who were believed to have helped her in contacting her fugitive son.

The review revealed that two days before Welch died, two calls were made to a home in Salida, Calif.

When investigators got the homeowner’s driver’s license, his photo looked familiar. “Garry Donald Webb” was an older, thinner Asher. His right thumbprint from his driver’s license matched that from Asher’s arrest fingerprint card.

FBI agents and police officers set up surveillance on Asher’s home — a trucking business where the man known as Webb worked. When he walked out of his home at 8:15 a.m. last Friday, investigators pounced.

It didn’t take long for Asher to admit his true identity.

But not everyone knew of Asher’s past. Inside the home was a girlfriend he lived with for 27 years. She was shocked to learn of Asher’s criminal history and prison escape, agents said.

Asher was booked into the Deuel Vocational Institute in Tracy, where he was processed back into state prison.

Orange police arrested a La Habra mother in connection with the case of a baby who was clinging to life after falling from the upper stories of a parking structure at Children’s  Hospital of Orange  County.

Orange police said they arrested Sonia Hermosillo early Tuesday without incident, accusing her of intentionally throwing her 7-month-old son off the parking structure.

The infant was in critical condition at a local trauma center, police said.

Police said in the statement that the boy’s father called police and reported the boy missing Monday evening.

The Orange Fire Department said it received a 911 call at 6:19 p.m.  from someone saying a baby was possibly thrown from the parking  structure.   Police said the caller saw the baby falling from the  parking structure at the hospital.

Soon after the baby was discovered, police found the woman’s car.

“There was a child seat in the vehicle, but no baby,” police  said in a press release.

Hermosillo, 31, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

A former drug task force commander in Contra Costa County sobbed and wiped away tears Monday as he pleaded not guilty to drug and corruption charges, offenses that could carry a life sentence if he is convicted.

Norman Wielsch, 50, was ordered freed on bail after agreeing in Oakland federal court to undergo a psychiatric evaluation within three days to determine whether he is suicidal. His father posted his $100,000 bail.

Wielsch is a former narcotics agent with the state Department of Justice who, until earlier this year, was commander of the multiagency Centra Contra Costa Narcotics Enforcement Team. He was arrested by federal agents at his Antioch home last week after a grand jury indicted him and former Concord private investigator Christopher Butler.

The men are charged with stealing methamphetamine and marijuana from police evidence lockers to sell, robbing prostitutes of cash and cell phones during phony sting operations, and operating a brothel in Pleasant Hill that fronted as a massage parlor.

The 17-count indictment also alleges the men conducted a phony drug bust of a Danville teenager, falsely detained him and stole his narcotics.

Butler, 50, pleaded not guilty Friday and was released after his father secured a $1 million bond.

In Oakland on Monday, Assistant U.S. Attorney John Hemann told Magistrate Judge Laurel Beeler that his office considered Wielsch’s suicide risk “sufficiently grave” and requested a psychological assessment as a condition of his release on bail.

If Wielsch’s psychologist finds him to be a threat to himself, he could be returned to supervised custody.

During his arraignment, Wielsch repeatedly broke into sobs as the judge read the charges to his elderly father, Ernest Wielsch, who agreed to secure the bail amount.

After the judge asked the elder Wielsch if he understood he was financially liable if his son violates bail conditions, the father asked, “Could you be lenient on my son? He’s been good.”

Outside the courtroom, Norman Wielsch’s attorney, Michael Cardoza, said his client has been meeting regularly with a psychologist.

“They’re worried that a cop, in his position and facing the embarrassment he’s brought upon himself and his family would, as they say in the business, eat his gun,” Cardoza said. “While he is embarrassed, it is not a real concern.”

Wielsch and Butler are scheduled to appear in federal court Sept. 6.

Shawna Apour

August 18 2011 at 11:47 AM

A San Carlos woman fatally stabbed her boyfriend’s pet bearded dragon in cold  blood, the first act of a drama that ended with her in jail for trying to grab a  sheriff’s deputy’s gun, authorities say.

Shawna Apour, 37, killed the lizard because she thought her boyfriend was  flirting with other women, said San Mateo County District Attorney Steve  Wagstaffe.

The attack happened at about 3:40 a.m. Saturday at a home on the 1000 block  of Crestview Drive, where the couple had been living together for a year,  authorities said.

The victim was Speedy, a 14-year-old bearded dragon, said sheriff’s Lt. Ray  Lunny. Speedy clung to life for three days before dying.

Apour proceeded to go outside, vandalize her boyfriend’s brother’s 1958 Buick  with the knife that killed the lizard and slash the tires of two other cars,  scratching “hate crime” on the hood of one of them, Wagstaffe said.

Sheriff’s deputies were called, and Apour brandished the knife at them before  she was subdued with the help of a Taser shock weapon and arrested, Lunny  said.

Apour posted $25,000 bail and was released. At about 6:50 p.m. Tuesday —  the same day Speedy died — her frantic mother called police with the news that  Apour was walking on the railroad tracks near the San Carlos train station,  Wagstaffe said.

Apour became aggressive when approached and tried to grab  Deputy Bridget  Hensley’s gun and Taser, Lunny said. Hensley subdued her, and Apour was again  jailed. She told deputies that she had tried to yank away the gun because the  “government was screwing her,” prosecutors said.

Apour has been charged with domestic violence, cruelty to animals, vandalism,  brandishing a weapon, possession of a weapon, resisting arrest and disobeying a  law enforcement officer. She is being held at San Mateo County Jail on $200,000  bail.

A 38-year-old man has been arrested
as part of the investigation into phone hacking, Scotland Yard has said.

The man, named by the Guardian as former News of the
World journalist James Desborough, was arrested by officers on Thursday
morning.

He attended a south London police station by appointment, where he is being
held on suspicion of conspiring to intercept communications.

Meanwhile, actress Leslie Ash has settled a claim against the paper.

The Men Behaving Badly star and her husband, former footballer Lee Chapman,
had sued the Sunday tabloid over allegations it illegally listened to voicemails
left by their sons while Ash was recovering from a superbug in hospital in
2004.

Their solicitor, Charlotte Harris, told BBC News they were “pleased” to have
settled the claim with the newspaper’s publisher and the private investigator
Glenn Mulcaire and to have been awarded an “appropriate” sum.

The couple now plan to take action against other newspapers, she said.

In a statement, the couple said they were pleased the issue had been resolved
and they had received an apology.

The couple revealed in January that police had found documents listing their
names, addresses and phone numbers, as well as the mobile details of their
children.

News International has declined to comment.

Leslie Ash
The size of the agreed payment to Leslie Ash has not been revealed

On Thursday the Met Police made a 13th arrest as part of their hacking
investigation, Operation Weeting.

James Desborough, who joined the News of the World in 2005, was named showbiz
writer of the year at the British Press Awards in April 2009, and later became
the newspaper’s Los Angeles-based US editor.

The judges said he “produced a series of uncompromising scoops which mean no
celebrity with secrets can sleep easy”.

He is among the journalists undergoing a 90-day consultation period following
News International’s decision to cease publication of the tabloid in the wake of
the phone-hacking scandal.

A series of high-profile figures have been questioned by police, including
the company’s former chief executive Rebekah Brooks and ex-Downing Street
communications chief Andy Coulson.

After the latest arrest, News International said in a statement: “We are
fully co-operating with the police investigation and we are unable to comment
further on matters due to the ongoing police investigation.”

On Wednesday, the former Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson
was cleared of misconduct in his handling of the phone-hacking inquiry by the
police watchdog.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission also cleared John Yates, former
Assistant Commissioner Andy Hayman and former Deputy Assistant Commissioner
Peter Clarke of misconduct over phone hacking.

However, an independent inquiry will examine claims Mr Yates secured a Met
Police job for a News of the World executive’s daughter.

‘Widely discussed’

The announcement followed the release of a letter by the Commons culture
committee that suggested senior executives at the News of the World knew phone
hacking was taking place.

Written by former royal editor Clive Goodman as he appealed against his
dismissal in 2007, the letter said hacking was “widely discussed” at the
paper.

Following publication of the letter Prime Minister David Cameron said he
would have “taken different decisions” over the appointment of former News of
the World editor Andy Coulson as his director of communications if he had “known
then all the things I know now”.

MURDER2

8/17/11 07:46 PM ET

According to newly released documents, Washington socialite Viola Drath’s death was caused by strangulation and blunt force trauma.

The latest revelation in the case comes one day after the arrest of the German expatriate’s husband, 47-year-old Albrecht Muth. Authorities have charged Muth with second-degree murder in his 91-year-old wife’s slaying.

Paramedics in the District of Columbia were dispatched on Friday to a home in an upscale Georgetown neighborhood in response to a report of an unconscious person. Upon their arrival, they discovered an unconscious and unresponsive Drath.

“Personnel from DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services determined that the decedent had no signs of life and was pronounced dead by a member of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the District of Columbia,” a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police Department told The Huffington Post.

Muth sent out about 40 emails Friday afternoon, notifying friends and associates of his wife’s death, which he curiously said had occurred on Thursday.

“I am sad to advise that my dear wife of nearly 25 years passed last night. Funeral arrangements are pending,” Muth wrote.

In an obituary submitted to the Washington Post, Muth listed the cause of his wife’s death as “head trauma from a fall” and again listed the day of her death as Thursday.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the District of Columbia did not complete the autopsy on Drath until Saturday. It was then that they officially set her time of death as Thursday and determined the manner of death was homicide.

On Sunday, police executed a search warrant inside Muth and Drath’s home. Investigators removed several bags of evidence, the significance of which remains unclear.

Muth was arrested and charged with his wife’s murder on Tuesday evening. Following his arrest, the Drath family released the following statement to the media:

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our mother and grandmother, Viola Drath. Her intelligence, independence and grace remained intact to the end. Our family is incredibly appreciative of the excellent work of the Metropolitan Police Department.”

According to the Washington Post, Drath was born in Germany in 1920 and worked as a journalist for the Handelsblatt. When she later immigrated to the United States, she married her first husband, U.S. Army Col. Francis S. Drath, in 1947 and worked as a contributor to the Washington Times.

Col. Drath died in 1986, and a few years later Viola Drath married Muth, who was more than 40 years her junior.

Muth has reportedly claimed to be a general in the Iraqi army and was known to walk around his neighborhood in a military uniform.

The Iraqi government, however, claims he is not a member of its military.

“We are deeply troubled by Mr. Muth’s claim of his service in the Iraqi military. He is not currently and has never been a member of the Iraqi Army,” the Iraqi Embassy in Washington told the Washington Post.

“He does not represent the Embassy, its attaches, the government of Iraq, or any government institution in any fashion,” the embassy continued. “In the past, the Embassy was aware of the claims made by Mr. Muth and made it clear to all concerned that they were false and demanded that they must cease.”

Muth reportedly continues to assert his affiliation with the Iraq military. The reason at this time remains unclear.

According to court documents, the 21-year relationship between Muth and Drath was, at times, turbulent.

In 2006, Muth was charged with assaulting Drath with a chair, pounding her head on the floor and sitting on her. The charges were later dropped when Drath decided not to pursue it, according to court records.

Court records also show Muth was arrested two years later for domestic violence, but was not prosecuted.

The charging documents released Wednesday allege that Muth presented a letter to his wife’s family after her death, stating that in the event of her death he was to be paid $150,000. The letter was dated Aug. 11, the day before she was reported dead. Muth also allegedly asked if he could continue to receive his monthly allowance of $2,000.

The court documents allege that Muth spoke to himself several times when left alone in a police interview room. He allegedly said to himself, “She has ruled it a murder.”

Authorities say Cynthia Van Holland was arrested after a bank in Auburn was
held up around 2:30 p.m. Monday.

Placer County sheriff’s Lt. Mark Reed says Van Holland, dubbed the “Bad Hair
Bandit,” was seen by witnesses jumping into a car just after the heist.

Van Holland and the driver of the car, 26-year-old Christopher Alonzo, was
arrested a short distance away on Interstate 80.

The FBI says the 47-year-old Van Holland is believed to responsible for up to
20 other bank robberies, including heists in Washington, Oregon and Montana.

She was given the nickname by authorities because of different wigs she wore
during the robberies.

Reed says Van Holland is due back in court Thursday after a brief appearance
Wednesday.

Misfortune has fallen upon a family of fortune tellers in Florida and New York who have been charged with swindling $40 million over the past 20 years from customers looking to cure illnesses, end spells of bad luck or mend broken relationships.

Since 1991, the family has been telling customers that “money is the root of all evil,” according to an indictment released Tuesday, convincing people to hand over huge sums of money, jewelry and other valuables that needed to be “purged” before being returned.

And for 20 years, the alleged scheme worked.

The indictment claims the family amassed a Florida home, a yacht and over $1.8 million in gold coins. The rundown also identifies 14 cars—including four Mercedes Benz, a BMW, a Rolls Royce and a Bentley. Two Harley Davidson motorcycles were also part of the loot list.

Fortune Telling Fraud Netted $40 Million, Cops Charge

The Florida relatives arrested Tuesday were Rose Marks, 60; Cynthia Miller, 33; Rosie Marks, 36; Vivian Marks, 21; Michael Marks 33; and Donnie Eli, 38. In New York, Nancy Marks, 42, and Ricky Marks, 39, were arrested on Tuesday.

Police, who dubbed their investigation “Operation Crystal Ball,” are still searching for family member Victoria Eli, 65, who lives in both Florida and New Jersey. A co-conspirator named Peter Wolofsky, 84, was also arrested. Wolofsky was charged with laundering money on behalf of the family through his own business.

The family members are all related either by blood or marriage and many used false names in their practices.

The 61-count indictment includes charges of conspiracy, mail fraud, wire fraud and money laundering.

The allegedly fraudulent psychics performed Tarot card readings, palm reading, astrology readings, numerology readings and spiritual readings.

The indictment alleges that the family “told clients that they and their family members or friends would contract terrible diseases, suffer horrible financial hardships, and endure terrible catastrophes, and that loved ones who were already sick would not recover, and that their lives would remain haunted by evil spirits if they did not cleanse their money of those evil spirits.”

Fortune Teller Family Fortune Was Illegal, Cops Say

Identifying victims only with initials, the indictment tells the story of several scenarios where people were taken advantage of.

In one instance, a woman identified as L.B. was told by Nancy Marks that she had to purchase a Cartier watch. Once L.B. bought the watch, Marks told her that “she needed to work on the watch to turn back time and bring love back to L.B.” She turned over the watch on a promise she would get it back after the work was done, but never got the watch back.

In another scam, an alleged victim identified as S.K. told Cynthia Miller that he was hearing voices in his head due to extreme stress. Miller told him that she would speak with Michael the Archangel to find out what S.K. needed to do, and the alleged message was that S.K. needed to make sacrifices, “The sacrifice called for 32 gold coins because S.K. was 32 years old and [Miller] needed a gold coin for each year S.K. did not have faith.” S.K. gave Miller $400,000 in gold coins.

Numerous other scenarios involve alleged family curses, some as old as 250 years, that could only be remedied by cleansing of money and valuables.

Joseph LoBrutto III is a well-known psychic in Florida who has been featured in newspapers and profiled on television. LoBrutto said it can be easy to be taken advantage of by false psychics and that research or references from new-age stores can be ways of avoiding scams.

“The big red flag is keeping you coming back. It should be just that one reading,” LoBrutto said. “And if they say it’s a curse or a hex, there’s no such thing. Walk out.”

LoBrutto is appalled by the behavior of the group. “It’s a shame. It really ruins our reputation,” he said. “Psychics are made out to be crazy and this doesn’t help.”

The pre-trial detention hearing for the Florida family members is scheduled for Friday and the New York relatives will be in court Thursday. A court clerk at the federal courthouse in Fort Lauderdale said that all of the defendants are in currently in custody and do not have an attorney yet.

A Tampa teenager has been arrested and charged with plotting to kill two school officials and 30 students with bombs on the first day of school scheduled for next week in what would have been the most serious school attack since the Columbine massacre.

Jared Cano, 17, wrote a manifesto that detailed his plans for his attack starting at 5 a.m. next Tuesday, Police Chief Jane Castor said at a news conference today. The manifesto allegedly included information about the layout of Freedom High School in Tampa, Fla., and where exactly Cano was planning to place bombs in the school of roughly 21,00 students.

Castor also said they recovered bomb making material from his home including fuses, timers, shrapnel, accelerant and plastic tubing. No firearms were found in his family’s apartment, police said.

The arrest on Tuesday came just hours after someone alerted police about Cano’s alleged plot, Castor said. The tipster’s identity has been kept confidential but that person was praised today as a “hero.”

“It’s someone who had information and they felt strongly enough to call the Tampa Police Department,” Castor said.

Police said that Cano specified in his manifesto his goal of surpassing the number of students who were killed and injured during the 1999 Columbine High School massacre.

On April 20, 1999, Columbine High School seniors Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, wielding automatic weapons, slaughtered 12 students and one teacher. Another 24 were wounded in the 45 minute rampage.

Plot for Tampa School Massacre Uncovered

Cano is the latest student to express admiration for the Columbine killers. Seung-Hui Cho sent a tape praising Klebold and Harris before going on a shooting spree at Virginia Tech that left 33 people dead in 2007.

The teen’s manifesto targeted two individuals “in the administration at Freedom High School,” both of whom have been alerted that they were target, the chief said. Cano expressed feelings of “ill will” towards both of them in the manifesto.

He also targeted 30 students for death, the police said.

The manifesto detailed his minute-by-minute plan of attack, starting at 5 a.m. next Tuesday. It included the layout of Freedom High School and where exactly Cano was planning to place bombs in the school, Castor said.

Police said they have no reason to believe that anyone else was involved in the bomb plot. They reported that the family, who have been cooperative, did not know that their son had materials to build a bomb in his room.

Cano has been charged with threatening to throw, project, place or discharge a destructive device. He also faces charges for possession of bomb-making materials, cultivation of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.

Cano has been arrested in the past, police said, and has an “extensive criminal record.” His most recent arrest was for burglary. Tampa police confirmed that Cano had previously broken into a house and stolen a firearm. The victim, a convicted felon, did not press charges. Cano had also prevously been charged with carrying a concealed weapon,a taser, and the posession of marijuana.

In response to Cano’s mental status, Castor only said, “we are not in the business of diagnosing the mental health of an individual.”

But Cano’s recent facebook status messages may indicate emotional disturbance. “My life stays on repeat its gettin old :/” he posted on Monday at 12:11a.m.

Tampa Student Had Manifesto for Murder: Cops

Under his favorite quotations on facebook, he listed, “lessons not learned in blood are soon forgotten.”

Cano also admitted to his use of marijuana on his facebook profile, posting “i love me some weed haha” on Aug. 13 at 11:45 a.m.

But on Tuesday, Cano posted to his wall, “i jut did the dumbest thing ever!”

According to Christopher Farkas, Freedom High School principle for the past three years, Cano was suspended from that school in March 2010 for an off-campus incident. Police confirmed that he was expelled from school for his previous burglary.

In a press conference today, Farkas, who knew Cano, said, “there are threats that happen” involving the school, but that “95 percent of time, they’re not real.”

Farkas said school will open on Tuesday as scheduled, with increased police security on campus and counselors available to students if necessary. Electronic messages have also been sent out to parents of students informing them that the school is working with the Tampa Police Department to keep the school safe.

August 17, 2011 – 10:23AM

CHILLING details were revealed in a US court today about how finance executive Paul “Douglas” Peters allegedly broke into Sydney schoolgirl Madeleine Pulver’s family home and strapped a fake bomb to her neck.

Mr Peters was arrested after a raid on a Kentucky house involving heavily armed FBI agents and NSW Police officers. He was charged with aggravated break and enter with intent to commit a serious indictable offence, demanding property by force with intent to steal, and kidnapping.

Mr Peters’s US lawyer, Scott Cox, told reporters that his client said he was innocent.

“He will contest the charges,” Mr Cox said.

An indictment filed by US prosecutors – detailing how Mr Peters was tracked down halfway across the world – was made public as the 50-year-old fronted an extradition application at the District Court in Louisville, Kentucky, about 12.30am AEST.

Prosecutors allege Mr Peters surprised Ms Pulver as she studied in the bedroom of her family’s Mosman mansion on August 3.

“At about 2.15pm, she saw a man carrying a black aluminium baseball bat and wearing a striped, multiple-coloured balaclava over his head, walk into her room,” the indictment states.

The intruder allegedly told her to “sit down and no one needs to get hurt”. He allegedly forced a black box “against her throat and looped a device similar to a bike chain, which was also attached to the box, around her neck”. He locked the box into position then placed a lanyard, on the end of which was attached a green USB stick and a plastic document sleeve, the indictment alleges.

Mr Peters allegedly said: “Count to 200, I’ll be back. If you move, I can see you – I’ll be right here.” He then left the room.

Extremely frightened, Ms Pulver thought he was robbing the house. After a few minutes she yelled out but there was no response. She phoned her mother, Belinda, and took the documents from the plastic sleeve. She saw the word “explosive” on one. She also phoned her father, Bill, who called the police.

When officers arrived Ms Pulver was crying and hysterical. The note around her neck said: “Powerful new technology plastic explosives are located inside the small black combination case delivered to you. The case is booby-trapped. It can ONLY be opened safely, if you follow the instructions and comply with its terms and conditions.”

It said not to contact authorities, and provided an email address.

“You will be provided with detailed remittance instructions to transfer a defined sum once you acknowledge and confirm receipt of this message.”

Police determined that the Gmail account linked to the incident was set up on May 30 from an Internet Protocol address linked to a Chicago airport.

Travel documents obtained from immigration authorities showed that Mr Peters had been at the airport that day.

Madeleine Pulver ... was trapped inside her Mosman home.Madeleine Pulver … a fake bomb was put around her neck.

The Gmail account was accessed three times on the afternoon of the attack, almost two hours after the hoax device was placed around the teenager’s neck, the complaint said.

The first access was at 4.09pm from an IP address registered to Kincumber Library on the NSW central coast. Surveillance video captured a man matching the suspect’s description at the library about the same time.

The next two were at 5.25pm and 5.51pm on the same day, from an IP address registered to the Avoca Video Store.

Surveillance footage showed the suspect had driven to the library and the video store in a Range Rover manufactured between 1996 and 2001, Louisville newspaper The Courier Journal reported.

Police cross-checked a list of all Range Rover owners in Australia, with evidence from computer files used to type the note and credit card accounts used to buy computer supplies and a baseball bat, leading them to Mr Peters.

Mr Peters allegedly bought a one-way ticket to fly on August 8 from Sydney to Kentucky, via, Chicago.

Mr Peters, a father of three, was arrested after a SWAT team raided his estranged wife Debra’s home at La Grange, about 50 kilometres from Louisville, on Monday afternoon Kentucky time.

Mrs Peters sobbed in court as Magistrate Dave Whalin remanded her husband in custody.

Mr Peters and his ex-wife divorced in 2007 and have school-age children together, Mr Cox said. He did not know how long they had been married.

“She’s in shock,” Mr Cox said of Mr Peters’s former wife. “This is hard on her and her children … She’s not involved in any respect to this, at all.”

Mr Peters appeared calm as he stood in the dock wearing a lavender shirt, tan shorts and sandals. He was in hand and leg cuffs when he was led into the court by three burly US marshals.

Mr Cox said he was unfamiliar with extradition laws with Australia and reserved the right to apply for bail.

NSW Police detective superintendent Luke Moore, who was in court, told reporters it could take “some weeks” to apply for Mr Peters’s extradition. The Australian government has 60 days to make the formal request for extradition.

Mr Peters is due in court again on October 14.

Damian Rzeszowski with wife Izabela and their children.

10:55pm UK, Monday August 15, 2011

The man suspected of killing six people, including his wife and two children, in Jersey has been named locally as Damian Rzeszowski.

The victims are believed to include his wife, named as Izabela Rzeszowska, their two young children, his father-in-law and two family friends.

They were all stabbed to death in St Helier on Sunday afternoon.

Friends of the family named the suspect, 30, during a church service near to the spot where the attacks took place.

Detectives are waiting to question Rzeszowski in hospital, where he is in a serious but stable condition after surgery.

He has been formally arrested in his hospital bed and is currently under armed guard.

Police have confirmed that he and the victims were all of Polish origin and the victims were from two families.

Izabela had posted a heartfelt message written in Polish on her Facebook page on July 21.

Translated, it reads: “I love you more than life, holding each other’s hands we’ll overcome everything because you are my life, my faith, my humbleness and above all my other half.”

Neighbours claim Rzeszowski had been suffering from depression and was recently in hospital for treatment, Sky crime correspondent Martin Brunt said.

Brunt added that the family had only returned from Poland in the last day or so.

Police have yet to formally identify the victims and it is still unclear what led up to the attack.

Family friend Marlena Bartus, who was at the church service on Monday night, described them as “almost the perfect family”.

“They were a lovely family, lovely kids… The children loved playing with their Mega Bloks and he used to push them in a trailer. The way we had seen him, he was a really good father.”

Woman believed killed in Jersey Izabela Rzeszowska

Izabela Rzeszowska is believed to have died in the Jersey stabbings

Her husband Jakub added: “It is so sad, this is something that should not happen. There are lots of questions that need to be answered.

“It’s such a tragedy. I can’t understand why the kids were involved. This is not about them, they are innocent.”

Mrs Bartus said she believed the boy was aged about two and the daughter was about five or six.

Neighbours have claimed the attack spilled from a flat in St Helier onto the street on Sunday afternoon.

A neighbour, who would only give his first name of John, said he had run from his garden nearby when he heard a woman screaming.

“She shouted: ‘please help me, please God help me’,” he said.

Mike Bowron, chief officer for Jersey Police, has called for local communities to remain “dignified and calm”.

“Jersey is an incredibly safe place, one of the safest in the western world, and incidents of this nature are exceptionally rare,” he said.

“It makes such a tragedy even more difficult for people to come to terms with.”

A Louisiana man is accused of decapitating and dismembering his disabled 7-year-old son and leaving the boy’s head near the street so the child’s mother would see it — a killing that brought seasoned police officers to tears, authorities said Monday.

Jeremiah Lee Wright, 30, of Thibodaux has confessed to killing Jori Lirette, Police Chief Scott Silverii said. He said Wright was booked with first-degree murder and was held Monday in lieu of $5 million bond.

Silverii’s spokesman, Detective Ricky Ross, said he does not believe Wright has an attorney.

Silverii said the motive was unclear, though Wright told police “that he’d gotten to the point where he was tired of taking care” of the boy, who had cerebral palsy and heart problems, needed a feeding tube and was in a wheelchair.

“He said when he put his head out by the side of the road it was so the mother would see it when she came by,” Silverii said. He said Wright’s only explanation for doing so was “just that he wanted her to feel stupid when she saw the head.”

The police chief said Jori’s feet and one hand also were cut off, recovered with the body in several white plastic garbage bags.

Police had been called to the house last month when the couple had an argument — possibly about money — though neither person brought charges, Ross said. The police chief said Wright had been arrested a few times previously, though he was never charged with violent crimes. Wright served 10 days for theft in 2005.

Silverii said friends had taken the child’s mother, Jesslyn Lirette, 27, to try to fix her broken-down car on Sunday. Lirette — who lived with Wright but was not married to him — returned to a home blocked with police tape.

When she identified herself, Silverii had Ross, who had been her minister for 12 years and remains a lay pastor, and a captain tell her what had happened to her son, a second-grade student at South Thibodaux Elementary School.

“These are experienced men. They came out of there in tears. Just absolutely in tears,” Silverii said.

Grief counselors from the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office also spent time with her, he said.

The slaying was the first since 2008 in Thibodeaux, which is about a 60-mile drive west of New Orleans.

Silverii said the boy apparently was decapitated over the kitchen sink, which was sent to the Louisiana State Police crime lab along with a box of tools found nearby. An autopsy taking place Monday in Jefferson Parish would identify when the child died and what was used to decapitate and dismember the boy, Silverii said.

Suspect Brent Zubeck

August 22, 2011    7:38am

A double-murder suspect arrested Monday morning in Encino wore disguises — including wigs — to elude capture, according to Los Angeles police officials.

Brent Zubeck, wanted in connection with the deaths of a Chatsworth  couple found in trash bins outside their home, had been hiding out since the Aug. 12 slayings, according to police. His arrest early Monday capped an hours-long standoff that began Sunday night   and shut down parts of Encino. More than 100 law-enforcement officers  and personnel  searched for the suspect, police said.

Zubeck, who had lived at the Lassen Street house where the couple’s bodies were found,
was “a master of  disguise,” an LAPD source told the Los Angeles Times.

Police had gotten a report that Zubeck might be attending a party Sunday night in Encino.

Detectives were following him outside a  Ralphs at Ventura   Boulevard and Libbit Avenue about 9:30 p.m. Sunday when he  turned and   shot at them before fleeing on foot.

Police closed off a square-mile area as they pressed their house-to-house search with the help of dogs.

Zubeck was eventually spotted and shot in the hip by police, who took him into custody.

Three siblings wanted for a bank robbery in Georgia and the attempted murder of a Florida police officer wouldn’t go down without a fight, opening fire during a police chase that ended with them crashing on a Colorado interstate, authorities said Wednesday.

“I am proud to say today we won,” said Sheriff Chris Nocco of Pasco County, Florida, where the trio was wanted.

Officials called the suspects “the Dougherty family” and identified them as Ryan Edward Dougherty, 21; sister Lee Grace Dougherty, 29; and half-brother Dylan Dougherty Stanley, 26.

They were all in custody and receiving medical treatment Wednesday afternoon. All three suffered injuries, but none were life-threatening, Pueblo County, Colorado, Sheriff Kirk Taylor said.

Taylor said the three were chased by police on Interstate 25 and captured near Walsenberg, south of Pueblo. Shots were fired at officers, according to authorities.

Deputies earlier Wednesday spotted the white Subaru at a gas station after it left a campground near Colorado City, the Colorado State Patrol said. The vehicle would not stop, and a 20-mile high-speed chase ensued.

One of the suspects got out of the vehicle, which had Texas plates, after the crash, but was soon apprehended, Taylor said.

“The three Doughertys were speeding,” Nocco told reporters. “It’s ironic they didn’t learn their lesson. The Colorado State Patrol attempted to pull them over. In that attempt to pull them over, the Doughertys went back to their MO and started shooting at law enforcement.”

On Tuesday, a U.S. magistrate issued warrants for the siblings’ arrest in connection with an August 2 bank robbery in Valdosta, Georgia, where an AK-47 type assault rifle and an apparent machine pistol were used.

According to Taylor, the trio spent Tuesday night in the San Isabel National Forest in Pueblo County, about 10 to 12 miles west of Colorado City.

They are also suspects in the attempted murder of a Zephyrhills, Florida, police officer that took place the same day — but five hours earlier and 200 miles away.

The officer wasn’t injured, though occupants in the getaway vehicle fired numerous rounds during a chase that reached up to 100 miles per hour, according to the Pasco County, Florida, Sheriff’s Office. One round struck a tire, disabling the police vehicle, the sheriff’s office said.

Since then, the siblings had been the subject of an interstate manhunt, with their faces plastered on hundreds of digital billboards from Florida to Kentucky to Texas.

According to a timeline of events that officials provided, Ryan Dougherty was sentenced August 1 in Volusia County, Florida, to 10 years’ probation and two years of community control monitoring for convictions on two counts of sending harmful information to a minor.

After the sentencing, he sent his mother a text message: “There’s a time for all of us to die,” according to the sheriff’s office.

At 6:30 a.m. August 2, a witness saw all three siblings leave in a white four-door vehicle from their Lacoochee home. At 6:59 a.m., Ryan Dougherty cut off his GPS monitoring ankle bracelet near Zephyrhills, the sheriff’s office said.

At 7:12 a.m. August 2, the shooting with the Florida police officer occurred, after which 20 high-caliber casings were found at the scene, the sheriff’s office said. The five-mile pursuit began after the officer tried to pull the vehicle over for speeding on State Road 54 in Zephyrhills, 30 miles northeast of Tampa, authorities said.

Then came the armed bank robbery at a CertusBank in Valdosta, Georgia, at 12:24 p.m. the same day, the FBI said.

During that robbery, three people dressed in black with masks entered the bank’s front entrance, the FBI said. Shots were fired at the ceiling, and everyone was told to get down, the bureau said. At least two of the robbers were armed, and the third obtained an undisclosed amount of cash, the FBI said.

PHOTO: Thelma Carter, 46, has been charged with murder and is currently sitting in a Georgia jail.

Aug. 2, 2011

A high-heeled shoe is being described as a murder weapon after Georgia police said a woman struck her male roommate in the head with her shoe, a fatal blow that killed him.

Thelma Carter, 46, has been charged with murder and is currently sitting in an Augusta, Ga.,jail. She is accused of killing 58-year-old Robert Higdon, a friend who shared a trailer with her.

Carter told police that the two had been involved in an altercation on Sunday regarding a puppy that they shared together, police said.

“She said she got upset with him. He put his hands on her and she took her shoes off and hit him in the head,” Lt. Calvin Chew of the Richmond County Police Department told ABCNews.com, adding that alcohol was involved.

It wasn’t until Monday that Carter notified police that Higdon was dead. She told police she left the trailer that night after the fight and got a hotel with her boyfriend. When she didn’t hear from Higdon, she got worried, returned home, and found him lying in the same spot he had fallen the day before.

Chew said it’s too early to tell how many times Higdon was hit in the head due to the blood at the crime scene, but an autopsy is scheduled for today to determine the cause of death.

“The shoe was more of a wide heel, so not the real thin and narrow type. I guess it was just the blunt force of it,” said Chew. “If it was just one strike, that’s a little unusual.”

Actor Al Pacino’s 21-year-old daughter was busted for driving while drunk and stoned in Manhattan early Saturday, authorities said.

Julie Pacino told cops she downed three beers and “smoked weed at home” after her 2009 black Mercedes-Benz was stopped at a police checkpoint on W. Houston St. near Washington St. about 1:20 a.m., prosecutors said.

“Yes, I was drinking,” Pacino told cops, according to prosecutors. “I had about three beers and I smoked weed at home. That was a few hours ago.”

She was questioned at the West Side checkpoint after cops noticed her California license plate had expired.

A male passenger was in the car, sources said.

Pacino had “watery and bloodshot eyes,” “slurred speech” and reeked of booze, prosecutors said.

Her blood alcohol level was 0.12, well above the legal limit of 0.08, court papers show.

The aspiring filmmaker was hit with a slew of charges, including driving while intoxicated and driving while impaired by the combined influence of drugs and alcohol, prosecutors said.

Pacino appeared in Manhattan Criminal Court early last night wearing a white top, a blue knee-length skirt and flip-flops.

The “Scarface” actor’s daughter didn’t say a word as a judge ordered her released without bail.

Outside the courthouse, Pacino, who had her license suspended, ignored reporters’ questions.

“She doesn’t have anything to say right now,” said her lawyer, Bruce Kage.

Pacino’s mother, Jan Tarrant, was her famous dad’s acting coach.

In 2009, Julie Pacino wrote and directed a short film called “Abracadabra.”

A representative for Al Pacino said he was not immediately available for comment.

Jose Antonio Acosta Hernandez in Mexico City on 31 July 2011
31 July 2011   14:18 ET

Police in Mexico say a suspected cartel leader they arrested on Friday has confessed to ordering the murder of 1,500 people in northern Chihuahua state.

Jose Antonio Acosta Hernandez, 33, is also suspected of masterminding the attack on a US consulate worker and her husband in Ciudad Juarez last year.

Officials say Mr Acosta Hernandez is a key figure in the Juarez cartel.

Juarez is Mexico’s most violent city, with more than 3,000 murders in 2010.

The suspect, who is better known as El Diego, is accused of being the leader of the La Linea gang, whose members work as hired killers for the Juarez cartel.

The cartel controls some of the main drug smuggling routes from Ciudad Juarez into the United States.

Police believe El Diego was also behind a car bomb attack which killed four people in the border city, the first such attack in Mexico’s spiralling drug-related violence.

Head of Mexico’s federal police anti-drug unit Ramon Pequeno said Mr Acosta Hernandez had also admitted to ordering the killing of 15 people, most of them teenagers, at a party in Ciudad Juarez last year.

The Mexican government had offered 15m Mexican pesos ($1,275,000; £778,000) for information leading to his arrest.

US prosecutors said they wanted to try him in the case of the 2010 killing of US consulate employee Lesley Enriquez, her American husband Arthur Redelfs, and the husband of another consular worker, Jorge Alberto Salcedo.

They were shot dead in their car after leaving a social event in the city.

Ms Enriquez, 35, was four months pregnant when she died. The couple’s seven-month-old daughter survived the attack and was found crying in the back seat.

Mr Salcedo was killed in a near-simultaneous drive-by shooting as he drove away from the same event.
