February 18, 2013                9:00am

Sunday was a gorgeous day in downtown Houston. The sun was bright and warm, temperatures were in the low 70s and a strong breeze wafted through the dank stench of the weekend’s debauchery.

With Stern and Hunter on their way out, the NBA stands at a pivotal transition point. Long after everyone forgets about Kevin Hart, Ne-Yo and the unfortunate leather sweatpants trend, this weekend will be remembered for the players’ decision to take their league back and their timing is perfect.

LeBron has finally cut through the thicket of his own tortured narrative to carve out his rightful place among the all-time greats. Kyrie Irving announced himself to the world, taking his spot alongside players like Carmelo Anthony and Dwyane Wade in crunch time.

Irving was one of seven new All-Stars and established young phenoms like Kevin Durant and Blake Griffin put on a blinding offensive show. Chris Paul, the game’s MVP, was masterful with his precision passing and ability to make sense of a ragged flow.

“I’m on this thing called Synergy day in and day out watching basketball,” Paul said, which immediately endeared him to a new generation of media members who also spend their days riveted to the scouting service that has revolutionized the way the game is covered.

The league has never been deeper or presented and covered in so much depth. It is the right time for such exposure. All that was left was for the players to make a bold and decisive stand about their futures.

Now they have to follow through with the hard work and determination to remake their union in their image. That will be the hardest part, but if they can they have the potential to usher in a new era.

The Mavericks have their work cut out for them tonight in the finale of a long, grinding and mostly disappointing four-game road trip.

All Kevin Durant has done in two previous meetings this season is average 46 points.

He will be a defensive priority, obviously.

“We got to do a lot better,” coach Rick Carlisle said this morning after the Mavericks’ shootaround. “He’s a great player, but the other thing is he’s extremely opportunistic. Two or three times a game, they get you when they get an offensive rebound and they look to the 3-point line and they find him standing out there. If nobody’s guarding, he knocks down that shot. There’s just a lot of little things that lead to big problems.”

There was a time when the Mavericks were the big brother to Oklahoma City’s rising young stars. Clearly, the tables have turned in the last two seasons. The Thunder swept the Mavericks in the first round of the playoffs last season and they clearly have learned from some of the hard knocks they took in 2011, which included a Western Conference finals loss to the eventual NBA champion Mavericks.

Both games this season have gone to overtime, and both have gone to OKC.

“We’re making too many mistakes,” Nowitzki said. “It seems like we had OKC’s number for a long time, especially that year we won the championship. And since then we can’t beat ‘em in close games for some reason. So it’s frustrating, but we got to limit our mistakes down the stretch. That’s what it comes down to.”

Asked how much the Thunder has grown in two seasons, Nowitzki said: “They took a huge step. They went to the Finals last year and to me, they were actually the favorites to win it the way they ran through the whole Western Conference. Kevin’s playing an amazing all-around game. He’s tough and obviously (Russell) Westbrook attacks whenever he can. This is about as tough a road test as it gets.

“Obviously, now they’re more experienced. Going through tough times, you learn from losing tough games. They got a really tough team.”

Metta World Peace sat by his locker, relishing the moment.

“This is a beautiful situation to be in,” he said to a small group of reporters. “I want to sit here with you guys in June, just like this.”

The Lakers, who entered Sunday’s game against Oklahoma City in 10th place in the Western Conference, had just beat the Thunder, 105-96. World Peace played a pivotal role in the win, with 15 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Not that he wanted much credit.

“It’s a team game; it’s real simple,” he said, before turning on the journalists around him.

“You guys are selfish,” World Peace said. “You media guys are one-on-one because you’re going against each other. You guys are selfish, like you’re trying to go against him, trying to get the best story. You’re elbowing him, trying to tie him up. You’re hiring hit men and stuff and trying to take out other media people. You all are selfish. You’re not on the same team. We’re a team.”

World Peace was partially right.

The Lakers played beautiful team basketball against the Thunder, extending from Kobe Bryant‘s 14 assists on offense to World Peace’s and Earl Clark‘s defense on Kevin Durant.

Whenever Durant, a four-time All-Star, touched the ball, World Peace’s lightning fast hands were not far away swiping at the rubber and forcing Durant to hurry his shot. Durant, who is averaging 52% from the field this season, was 10-for-26 from the field against the Lakers on Sunday evening, making only 38% of his shots.

“I don’t know if I set the tone defensively — I think we did,” World Peace said, before yet against deflecting the spotlight, this time by pointing to Dwight Howard‘s defensive activity.

“He’s a presence,” World Peace said of Howard. “He’s changing how many shots? They don’t have that stat because the stat people are lazy.”

Whether or not World Peace wants to expound upon it, his recent play, especially his defensive intensity, has had quite an impact on the flailing Lakers, helping them string together a very modest, but crucially important, two-game win streak.

Lakers Coach Mike D’Antoni called World Peace’s defense “terrific.”

“I mean it’s big, it’s huge, especially on the fours,” D’Antoni said, referring to the power forward position. “It gives us a different look.”

World Peace played nearly 43 minutes, logging more time on the court than any of his teammates.

As he cooled down after the game, his analysis and commentary ranged from quirky to intelligent.

He pretended that he was unaware of his busted lip, making reporters describe the cut to him. He lamented that Howard took only seven shots, saying that he’d like to see the center shoot 12 to 15 shots a game. And he insisted that the Lakers shouldn’t be worried about what’s around the corner.

“We ain’t worried about no damn train,” World Peace said to a television reporter.  “And I love you so I’m sorry for saying ‘damn.'”

The Lakers, who improved to 19-25, are four games behind the eighth place Houston Rockets. With the win over the Thunder, one of the top teams in the NBA, the Lakers made a small statement.

“It was a collective effort,” World Peace said. “Everybody brought what they do best to the table.”

World Peace sure did. And he also brought it to the locker room.

Curators at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame should watch Steve Nash closely in the coming weeks.

If recent trends persist, they may have to make the following addendum to his biographical blurb:

Switched to shooting guard halfway through the 2012-13 season to help save one of the most disappointing teams in NBA history.

In this most surreal Lakers season, the top point guard of his generation suddenly deferring ballhandling duties to Kobe Bryant has been the oddest twist.

“The roles are all kind of upside down,” Bryant said Monday.

Nash was unrecognizable even to Lakers Coach Mike D’Antoni, who had watched him win a pair of most-valuable-player awards in Phoenix, after the 17-year veteran scored 17 points to go with only five assists Sunday against Oklahoma City.

“What he just did,” D’Antoni said, “he’s not.”

Well, he’s certainly headed in that direction.

Over the Lakers’ last two games, Nash combined for more than three times as many shots (22) as assists (seven) while averaging 16 points per game. Meanwhile, Bryant averaged 14 assists and only 11 shots, including zero three-point attempts, in those games.

The only figure that mattered to Nash was 2-0, his team’s record in that span.

“I want to do whatever I can to help this team,” he said, painfully aware that the Lakers (19-25) still have plenty of room for improvement.

That means the days of double-digit assists could be numbered for a player who has led the league in that category six times in the last eight seasons.

Not that Nash necessarily has to choose between pick-and-rolls and picking apart defenses with his shooting. He can do both.

“He’s just going to play basketball,” said former New York and Houston coach Jeff Van Gundy, who worked the Lakers-Thunder game as an analyst for ABC. “He’s going to shoot if he’s open and pass if he’s covered and try to make the right play. Nash has a unique perspective. I think he’s willing to do anything it takes to try to help them win.”

Some might wonder why Nash didn’t take a shoot-first approach earlier this season considering his career accuracy of 49.1%, including 42.8% from beyond the three-point line.

“He’s one of the greatest shooters of all time,” Bryant said. “He’s a no-leave guy. If they do leave him, God bless them.”

The Lakers convened for training camp in October with what appeared to be clearly defined roles for their superstar guards. Bryant would be the primary scorer and Nash the top facilitator.

It has taken a few months and more than a few losses for them to realize that those job descriptions required some tweaking.

“It’s not going to be the same as it was in Phoenix for me,” said Nash, who turns 39 next week. “It’s going to be different and I’ve got to accept and embrace that and try to help any way I can.”

Bryant can relate to old ways being gone with the recent wins. The league’s onetime leading scorer has dipped to No. 3 in points per game (28.7) behind Oklahoma City’s Kevin Durant (29.6) and New York’s Carmelo Anthony (29.4) while his assists have soared.

In the U.S. men’s basketball team’s first exhibition game this summer, it took 33 three-pointers against the Dominican Republic.

Against Nigeria in group play, the Americans attempted 46 three-pointers and made 29, an amazing 63%. And Carmelo Anthony made 10 of 12 and set a U.S. Olympics record with 37 points.

And why not? It’s an easy three.

At 22 feet, 1.7 inches, the FIBA international three-point line is closer to the basket than the NBA three-point line, which is 23 feet, 9 inches, except in the corner, where it’s 22 feet.

“It’s a lot easier,” Anthony said. “In our league, that’s a normal shot. That’s my range. That’s a shot that I take on a consistent basis and feel comfortable making.”

FIBA secretary general Patrick Baumann said in an interview Saturday that when FIBA moved its three-point line to its current spot in 2010 it should have moved it to the NBA distance.

“We have come to conclusion, at least in our mind, that we will at some point move it back to the NBA distance,” Baumann said. “It is obvious people have adjusted very fast. We think probably we should have gone sooner to the NBA distance from Day One.”

When U.S. forward Kevin Durant shoots a three, fans yell “layup,” an indication of how easy it is for Durant to make that shot.

“Kevin Durant, I think you can put it back as far as you want, and he will still make the points,” Baumann said. “There is no difference for some players.”

The U.S. men’s basketball team has destroyed opponents at the three-point line, and that strategy is expected to be a key in Sunday’s USA-Spain gold medal game.

If Spain has a chance, it must hit its threes and limit those by the Americans. Anthony is shooting 52.5%, Kobe Bryant 43.8%, Chris Paul 45.8% on three-pointers.

With the U.S. spacing the floor, that gives LeBron James ample opportunity to drive to the basket, leaving him with multiple options: shoot it himself if the defense decides to guard the three-point line or pass to open shooter if the defense collapses on him. It doesn’t leave an opponent with good choices.

Or as Lithuania coach Kestutis Kemzura said: “You have to pick your poison and then decide what you want to die from.”

Because the USA has played more games than every team other than Spain, let’s look at the number of three-point attempts the Americans take a game: 36.6, 12 more than the next closest teams, Lithuania (24.3 a game) and Argentina (24.1 a game).

The USA has made 16.3 threes for 44.5%. No other team is above 39.1%, and Spain is shooting 32.8% on threes. The Americans would have to make 66.7% of their two-point attempts to score as many points as they’ve scored shooting 44.5% on three-pointers.

Durant is shooting 55.8% on three-pointers and made eight of 10 three-pointers in a 126-97 victory against Argentina in group play. In a stretch where Durant made three consecutive threes, he launched one from 30 feet and it was all net.

“If DWill (Deron Williams) had thrown it to me a step across halfcourt, I was going to shoot,” Durant said. “It was just one of the things where I was feeling. It was a heat check. There were going to give me that ball, and no matter where I was I was going to pull it.”

The USA's Carmelo Anthony reacts Friday after sinking a three-pointer vs. Argentina.

In the U.S. men’s basketball team’s first exhibition game this summer, it took 33 three-pointers against the Dominican Republic.

Kevin Durant, LeBron James

June 13, 2012              8:13 a.m.

Kevin Durant didn’t embarrass LeBron James on Tuesday night. But the Oklahoma City superstar did show his Miami counterpart how it’s done in the NBA Finals — particularly in the fourth quarter — as the Thunder claimed a 105-94 victory in Game 1.

In his first NBA Finals appearance, Durant finished with 36 points, including 17 in the fourth quarter — numbers James has yet to match in 11 career NBA Finals games.

Now James was no slouch either. He had 30 overall points, the most he’s ever scored in the NBA Finals, but only seven of those came in the fourth quarter. That’s just not going to get the job done in a close game like this one — and it does little to put to rest a storyline from last year’s championship against the Dallas Mavericks.

During that six-game series, which the Heat lost, 4-2, the best James could muster in the fourth quarter was eight points. He scored two or fewer points in the final stanza of four of those games, all of which were winnable going into that quarter (the Heat actually did win one of them).

Durant, on the other hand, took over during crunch time Tuesday night. The Thunder had just claimed its first lead of the game late in the third quarter and was clinging to a one-point advantage heading into the fourth.

The Oklahoma City star scored six of his team’s first eight points of the quarter as the Thunder extended its lead to five points at the 8:30 mark. James missed two shots and threw the ball away during that same stretch, but at least he was trying — there were two games in last year’s finals in which he didn’t even take a shot in the fourth quarter.

Obviously there’s still a lot of basketball to be played. But so far if we’re comparing the two players, it’s advantage Durant.

Tony Parker

May 30, 2012

San Antonio is halfway to turning the Western Conference finals into a runaway.

Tony Parker scored 34 points, Manu Ginobili added 20 and the Spurs stayed perfect in the playoffs with a 120-111 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 2 on Tuesday night.

The Spurs set an NBA record with their 20th consecutive victory bridging the regular season and the playoffs. They came in sharing the longest such streak with the 2000-01 Lakers, who won 19 straight before losing to Philadelphia in the first game of the finals.

Those Lakers went on to win the championship and there’s no reason yet to think the Spurs won’t do the same. They put on an offensive clinic for three quarters, shooting 60 percent from the field and leading by as many as 22 points in the third quarter.

The Thunder made a late surge to get within six points, but Parker, Ginobili and Tim Duncan helped San Antonio put the Thunder in a 2-0 deficit with Game 3 Thursday night in Oklahoma City.

Kevin Durant had 31 points and James Harden rebounded from a rough Game 1 to score 30 for the Thunder, who have lost two straight for the first time since early April. Oklahoma City dropped to 15-4 in games after losses this season.

San Antonio picked up where it left off from the 39-point fourth quarter that turned Game 1 on Sunday. With sharp passes and hot shooting, the Spurs jumped to a 19-9 lead after the Thunder missed six of their first seven shots and had three turnovers in the first 4 minutes.

Durant settled down Oklahoma City with four early baskets, including a 3-pointer. The Spurs shot 52 percent (12 for 23) in the opening quarter, though, and led 28-22.

Durant was on the bench at the start of the second quarter, and Parker and the Spurs put together a 14-4 spurt to stretch the gap to 13 points.

Russell Westbrook hammered Parker’s arm on a drive and he crumpled to the court. That didn’t faze Parker, who scored the Spurs’ next seven points to keep San Antonio rolling.

The Spurs shot 58 percent (22 of 38) and had 13 assists in the first half. They also cut down their turnovers, committing only six in the first half after giving away 14 in the first two quarters of Game 1.

After taking six shots in the first 9 minutes, Durant managed just four shots the rest of the half.

The Spurs resumed picking apart Oklahoma City’s defense with precision passes after the break, scoring on five straight possessions. San Antonio was shooting 63 percent from the field and 64 percent from 3-point range at one point (7 for 11).

The biggest cheer from the crowd came after Ginobili flipped a behind-the-back pass to Parker in the corner for another 3 and the lead ballooned to 78-58.

Oklahoma City called a timeout, and Durant screamed at his teammates in the huddle. He started a modest 6-0 run with a pullup jumper and Spurs coach Gregg Popovich called a timeout, yelling at Parker as he came off the court.

Popovich continued screaming in the huddle, but by the time the teams headed back to the court, he and Parker were arm-in-arm, talking and nodding in agreement.

Late in the third quarter, the Thunder began intentionally fouling Tiago Splitter, a 32 percent free-throw shooter during the playoffs.
