JUST before stabbing a male nurse to death, a court has been told that a psychiatric patient believed that chiropractors had the power to bring dead people back to life.
Matthew Peter Loughrey, 34, is facing trial in the Supreme Court charged with the murder of nurse Bob Fenwick at the Bloomfield Hospital in Orange in January.
The court heard that Mr Loughrey had “intended to harm” young nurse Emily Pritchard but 63-year-old Mr Fenwick intervened and died from stab wounds.
Ms Pritchard, the daughter of former Police Association Bob Pritchard, is at Darlinghurst Court where Mr Loughrey has pleaded not guilty to murder and attempted murder by reasons of mental illness.
Justice Elizabeth Fullerton is hearing submissions to determine whether or not the special verdict can be reached.
The court heard this morning that Mr Loughrey was in a state of “acute paranoid psychosis” and had told people that chiropractors were like “witch doctors” and had the power to bring dead people back to life.
The hearing is continuing.
