Convicted Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout could face life in prison after a federal jury returned guilty verdicts Wednesday on four counts related to a conspiracy to kill Americans, acquire and export anti-aircraft missiles and provide material support to a terrorist organization.

Bout’s attorney, Albert Dayan, said the verdict will be appealed.

“I still stand by my position that Viktor was wrongfully accused,” said Dayan. “The jury has spoken but his position is still that he’s innocent.”

Widely dubbed “the Merchant of Death,” Bout was often referred to by U.S. and United Nations officials as among the most notorious of global arms traffickers.

He had pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

Dayan said during the trial that the former Soviet air force officer was not involved in illegal arms sales, and that federal agents had baited Bout into selling the weapons alongside a deal to sell airplanes.

The heart of the case stemmed from a 2008 sting operation in Thailand by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency.

Undercover agents posing as Colombian rebels attempted to buy larges caches of weapons, according to a 2008 federal indictment.

Both the United States and the European Union identify the rebel group — the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC — as a terrorist organization.

The agents tried to purchase 700 to 800 surface-to-air missiles, thousands of AK-47s and landmines, telling Bout that they wanted the arms “to kill Americans,” the indictment said.

Bout responded, it said, by saying he “was going to prepare everything the FARC needed.”

During closing arguments Tuesday, Assistant U.S. Attorney Brendan McGuire called the evidence against Bout “overwhelming,” pointing to alleged ties with various armed conflicts.

“He did everything he could to show that he could be a one-stop shop” for FARC, said McGuire.

Prior to his arrest, the DEA had struggled to draw Bout out of his Russian homeland, which is long thought to have sheltered and defended him.

Undercover agents met with Bout’s associates the world over, from Curacao to Copenhagen, in an attempt to set up a meeting with their target, according to the indictment.

He was extradited to the United States in 2010 following his arrest and a protracted court proceeding in Thailand.

The Russian businessman has also been accused of assembling a fleet of cargo planes to traffic military-grade weapons to conflict zones around the world since the 1990s.

According to the indictment, he was suspected of creating front companies that used his planes to deliver food and medical supplies, as well as arms.

His alleged trafficking activities in Liberia prompted U.S. authorities to freeze his American assets in 2004 and prohibited U.S. transactions with him, it said.

Less than a year later, the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control placed 30 companies and four people on a specially designated list that carried similar actions against them.

Bout has maintained that he operated legitimate businesses and had acted as a mere logistics provider.

Critics have accused Bout of providing arms to rebels in several countries and fueling bloody conflicts in places such as Liberia and Sierra Leone.

In 2000, then-British Foreign Office Peter Hain branded him “Africa’s chief merchant of death” at a time when Bout is believed to have supplied arms to officials in Sierra Leone, a former British colony then embroiled in civil war.

The 2005 movie “Lord of War,” starring Nicolas Cage, is considered to be largely inspired by Bout’s life.

Convicted: Mark Goudeau, 42, was found guilty of murdering nine people in Phoenix, Arizona, in the so-called Baseline Killer case

11:33 AM on 1st November 2011

A jury yesterday found a construction worker
guilty of murdering nine people in the so-called Baseline Killer case that
terrorised Phoenix during the summer of 2006.

Mark Goudeau was accused of attacking his
victims, eight of them women, as they carried out every day activities like
leaving work or washing their cars in Phoenix, Arizona.

Prosecutors had called the 47-year-old a
‘ravenous wolf’ driven by a hunger to rape women and kill those who didn’t
cooperate with his demands.

Goudeau faced 72 counts, including the nine
murders and various counts of kidnapping, sexual assault and robbery. He was
found guilty of all but four counts, and the jury failed to reach a verdict on
one charge.

Alvin Hogue, 53, whose wife was killed with
another woman as they cooked food inside a lunch truck in the city, said:
‘Hopefully there’s going to be some closure in my mind now.’

His wife left behind her husband and six
children, including their 4-month-old twin boys. He added: ‘They’ll never know
their mother. I’ve been waiting a long time for this… it’s pretty clear he’s
the one who did it.’

Goudeau kept his head bowed as the verdicts
were read out and shook it from side to side periodically.

The verdicts in the four-month trial mean he
is now eligible for the death penalty. Sentencing will begin
tomorrow.

Evidence: This ring, which belonged to Tina Washington, 39, was found in Goudeau's apartment. Ms Washington was shot dead and found in an alleyway in December 2005

He was already serving a 438-year prison
sentence in a sexual assault case connected to the Baseline Killer crimes for
raping a woman while pointing a gun at her sister’s stomach, but prosecutors
pursued the nine murder charges in a separate trial to get him the death
sentence.

The killings started in August 2005 and ended
with the murder of Carmen Miranda, in what police described as a ‘blitz attack’
on June 29, 2006.

The mother-of-two was hoovering her car and
talking on her mobile phone at a car wash when she was kidnapped and shot in the
head.

Killed: Georgia Thompson, 19, was Goudeau's first victim. She was killed outside her Tempe apartment on September 8, 2005

She was killed outside her Tempe apartment on September 8, 2005

Her body was shoved in the back seat of the
car, partially naked.

The other eight victims were also attacked at
random. For example, Tina Washington, a 39-year-old pre-school teacher, had been
waiting at a bus stop after a Christmas party when she was killed on December
12, 2005.

All the victims were shot in the
head.

Prosecutors told jurors that DNA, ballistics
and other evidence tied Goudeau to the crimes. Inside his home police found
traces of victims’ blood and a ring belonging to Ms Washington.

Randall Craig, defending, questioned the
integrity of the investigation.

During the trial he said: ‘The Phoenix Police
Department suffered from a severe case of tunnel vision.

‘The key result of all this was they
apprehended the wrong guy.’

Maricopa County attorney Bill Montgomery said
in a statement that ‘a terrible scourge on our community has now been held
accountable for his crimes’.

“It is now the charge of the criminal justice
system to see that the sentences for death are carried out as expeditiously as
possible,” he said.

In 2007, Goudeau was sentenced to 438 years in
prison for the 2005 attack. When the judge in that trial handed down Goudeau’s
sentence, he said he must have two ‘diametrically opposed’ personalities — one
calm and respectful in court, and the other sociopathic and brutal.

Goudeau had also been imprisoned for 13 years
after being convicted of beating a woman’s head against a barbell. The Arizona
Board of Executive Clemency paroled him eight years early in 2004.

He has previously acknowledged being a
recovering drug addict and once blamed his history of violence on a weakness for
crack cocaine.

Police named the series of killings and other
crimes after Baseline Road in south Phoenix where many of the earliest attacks
happened. Goudeau lived only a few miles from many of the attack
sites.

He was the last of three suspects to go on
trial for a rash of killings and attacks that terrorised the Phoenix area for
more than a year.

Support: Wendy Carr, Goudeau's wife, visits him weekly in jail and attended every court hearing during his trial for the nine murders

Dale Hausner and Samuel Dieteman were arrested
in the so-called Serial Shooter case in August 2006. Hausner was convicted in
March 2009 of killing six people and attacking 19 others in dozens of random
nighttime shootings and was given six death sentences. Dieteman testified
against Hausner and was sentenced to life in prison.

The two serial killer cases had Phoenix-area
residents on edge at the height of both sprees in the summer of 2006. Women felt
particularly vulnerable because the Baseline Killer targeted them, while the
Serial Shooter case made everyone nervous because the attacks happened at random
and targeted pedestrians and bicyclists at night.

Some even changed their daily routines,
avoiding being out late or keeping away from busy streets to avoid notice.

A mother accused of killing her two young children has been found guilty of their murders.

Fiona Donnison, 45, of Lightwater, Surrey, had denied the murder of Harry, aged three, and two-year-old Elise, in a trial at Lewes Crown Court.

Their bodies were found in holdalls in the boot of Ms Donnison’s car, near the former family home in East Sussex.

The prosecution claimed she killed them to hurt their father, Paul. The defence claimed she had depression at the time.

Jurors heard claims Ms Donnison, a former City worker, used the children as the “ultimate pawns”, by killing them in order to hurt their father in the most extreme way possible.

Prosecutors told the court she smothered the children with their bedding before putting their bodies in the car.

Ms Donnison declined to give evidence herself during the trial.

But the defence argued she had suffered from depression at the time and said the charges should be reduced to manslaughter.

Jurors heard from mental health professionals who said she swallowed a blade from a pencil sharpener earlier this year, could not remember events surrounding the deaths, and could not bring herself to say the children’s names.

Man who ejaculated into co-workers water is sentenced

August 8, 2011    2:43 pm

A Fullerton man convicted earlier this year for twice ejaculating into a female coworker’s water bottle was ordered Monday to pay the woman more than $27,000 in restitution.

Orange County Superior Court Judge Walter Schwarm ordered Michael Kevin Lallana, 32, to pay $27,410.80 to the woman for loss of wages, therapy and medical expenses, including the money she paid to have the tainted water tested.

Lallana, who was found guilty of two misdemeanor charges of battery in February, left the semen-laced water on his coworker’s desk at the Northwestern Mutual Finance Network in Newport Beach on two separate occasions last year.

The woman drank from the bottles both times, throwing the first one away after detecting an unusual taste. After the second incident, she saved the bottle and sent it to a private laboratory for testing. Two months later, results showed the water bottle contained semen and the woman contacted authorities.

Lallana was arrested in July 2010 and his DNA was later matched to the water bottle. Prosecutors said during his trial that Lallana had committed the act for sexual gratification because he was attracted to his coworker.

In April, Lallana was sentenced to six months in jail and three years’ probation. He also was ordered to register as a sex offender.

August 4, 2011   3:08 p.m.

A Texas jury convicted polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs of child sexual assault Thursday in a case stemming from two young followers he took as brides in what his church calls “spiritual marriages.”

The 55-year-old head of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints stood stone-faced as the verdict was read.

Jeffs, who acted as his own attorney, faces up to life in prison. The jury went immediately into sentencing proceedings. They had deliberated on a verdict for more than three hours.

Prosecutors used DNA evidence to show Jeffs fathered a child with a 15-year-old girl and played an audio recording of what they said was him sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl. They also played audio recordings in which Jeffs was heard instructing young women on how to please him sexually.

Jeffs has claimed he was the victim of religious persecution. The FLDS, which has at least 10,000 members nationwide, is a radical offshoot of mainstream Mormonism. The church believes polygamy brings exaltation in heaven and that Jeffs is God’s spokesman on earth.

Police had raided the group’s remote West Texas ranch in April 2008, finding women dressed in frontier-style dresses and hairdos from the 19th century as well as seeing underage girls who were clearly pregnant. The call to an abuse hotline that spurred the raid turned out to be a hoax, and more than 400 children who had been placed in protective custody were eventually returned to their families.

But authorities brought charges against several men from the group, with Jeffs by far the highest-profile defendant.

Jeffs stood mute and expressionless, staring at the floor, for all but a few seconds of the half hour he was allotted for a closing argument on Thursday. At one point he mumbled, “I am peace,” and said no more.

The only noise in the courtroom was the creaking of wooden benches brimming with spectators.

Prosecutors said the case had nothing to do with his church or his beliefs.

“You have heard the defendant make repeated arguments about religious freedoms,” said lead prosecutor Eric Nichols. “Make no mistake, this case is not about any people, this case is not about any religion. It is about one individual, Warren Steed Jeffs, and his actions.”

Prosecutors relied heavily on information found during the raid on the compound and after a traffic stop in Nevada in 2006, when Jeffs was arrested. Much of the material was discovered in a vault at the end of a secret passageway in the temple and another vault in an annex building.

“You might have asked yourselves,” Nichols said, “a lot of people may ask, why would someone record sex? … This individual considers himself to be the prophet. Everything he did, hour after hour, he was required to keep a record of that.”

On one of the tapes played at the trial, Jeffs made a reference to “drawing close” or “being close,” which authorities testified is how church members refer to sex. Two female voices said “OK.”

“A good wife is trained for her husband and follows the spirit of peace,” Jeffs was heard saying.

Another audio tape included Jeffs and the younger girl from a recording made in August 2006 at the Texas compound, according to testimony from Nick Hanna, a Texas Ranger involved in the 2008 raid.

Played in court, it was difficult to decipher, but Jeffs’ and a female voice are heard. He says, “I perform this service in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen,” then mentions the alleged victim by name. When she says something, he responds, “don’t talk while praying.” Several minutes of heavy breathing followed.

The jury wore headphones to better hear the recording and also followed a transcript. One female juror covered her face with her hand as she listened.

Jeffs represented himself after firing seven attorneys in the six months leading to the trial. He broke his courtroom silence with an objection marked by a nearly hourlong speech defending polygamy, and twice threatened the judge and the court with warnings of punishment from God.

He refused to cross-examine the state’s witnesses, and delayed giving an opening statement until he began presenting his own defense. In that statement, he evoked images of the civil rights movement and mentioned former Mormon leader Joseph Smith Jr. He also asked the jury to remember constitutional guarantees of religious freedom.

The lone defense witness Jeffs called, church elder JD Roundy, spent about 10 minutes on the stand Thursday discussing FLDS history after 4½ hours of testimony Wednesday evening.

Jeffs failed three times to remove state District Judge Barbara Walther from the case, the last rejection coming even without a hearing. He claimed Walther was biased because she issued the warrant for the original raid and was frequently updated as it progressed.

Eleven other FLDS men were charged with crimes including sexual assault and bigamy. All seven of those who have been prosecuted were convicted, receiving prison sentences of between six and 75 years.

An 87-year-old San Gabriel Valley man was convicted Wednesday of murdering his wife with an ax and attempting to kill her son.

After 1 1/2 days of deliberation, a Los Angeles jury found James Che Ming Lu guilty of the July 2009 murder of his 55-year-old wife, Michelle.

The jury of six women and six men also convicted him of the attempted murder of her 32-year-old son, Ji Ma Zeng, and found that he committed the crime using a deadly weapon.

Homicide Report: Michelle Lu, 55

LuMichelle

Deputy Dist. Atty. Amy Murphy, who prosecuted the case, said Lu repeatedly struck his wife of nine years in the head with an ax as she lay in bed in their home on Rosemead Boulevard near Pasadena.

Lu then walked down the hall and tried to use the ax on her son, but the younger man managed to fend off the attack and flee to a neighbor’s house.

After the attack, Lu allegedly called authorities to alert them to the crime.Lu was angry because he believed that he spent too much money on his wife and that she spent too much time away from home working, according to prosecutors. In the time running up to the killing, Lu and his wife had argued.

He faces up to life in prison when he returns to court Sept. 7 for sentencing by Judge Clifford Klein.

Anthony Sowell listens as the guilty verdicts are read at his murder trial in Cleveland, on 22 July 2011
22 July 2011   22:45 ET

A sex offender who lived among the remains of 11 dead women at his home in Cleveland in the US state of Ohio has been convicted of killing all of them.

Anthony Sowell was found guilty of aggravated murder, kidnapping, tampering with evidence and abuse of a human corpse in the 11 deaths.

The 51-year-old former US Marine could face the death penalty.

The bodies were found after police went to arrest Sowell in October 2009 on a sexual assault allegation.

He showed little emotion on Friday as the jury returned their verdict of guilty on 82 counts after more than 15 hours of deliberation.

Police criticisedThe trial heard how the women’s bodies had been disposed of in refuse bags and plastic sheets, then dumped around Sowell’s house and backyard.

Relatives of the victims sobbed in court, as did some of jury

Nearly all of the women had been strangled and were nude from the waist down.

Cleveland’s police force was accused of failing to properly investigate when the women began disappearing in 2007 as most of them were impoverished drug addicts.

During the trial, several women gave testimony of alleged attacks by Sowell, who was previously convicted of attempted rape in 1989.

One woman told the court she had been raped by Sowell, and that she had seen a headless body in his home.

Sowell’s sentencing begins on 1 August.

Until the discovery of the bodies, many in the neighbourhood believed the bad smell was coming from a nearby sausage shop.

The family-owned shop spent $20,000 (£12,260) on plumbing and other maintenance in attempts to get rid of the odour.
