Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says Derrell Johnson-Koulianos has been suspended from team activities following the wide receiver’s arrest on drug charges.

Johnson-Koulianos was released from Johnson County Jail after posting $8,000 bail Tuesday. The 23-year-old was expected to make a court appearance Wednesday on charges including possession of controlled substances, keeping a drug house and unlawful possession of a prescription drug.

Ferentz says in a statement that he’s “highly disappointed to learn of the charges.”

Court documents say Johnson-Koulianos was arrested after officers executed a search warrant at his home. Police say investigators found more than $3,000 in cash, marijuana, cocaine and prescription drugs.

Johnson-Koulianos of Campbell, Ohio, caught 46 passes for 745 yards and 10 TDs this season. Jail officials didn’t immediately know if he had an attorney Tuesday night and a telephone listing could not be found for his home address.

As if the November fourth quarter collapses weren’t enough for the Iowa Hawkeyes, tonight there’s even more disappointment for this 2010 team.

On Tuesday evening, Iowa Hawkeye senior wide receiver Derrell Johnson-Koulianos (DJK) was arrested by Iowa City police on a bevy of drug counts: possession of controlled substances, keeping a drug house and two counts of unlawful possession of a prescription drugs. Investigators also found more than $3,000 in cash, marijuana, cocaine and prescription drugs in DJK’s home, according to the National Football Post.

This season, DJK became Iowa’s career leader in receptions and receiving yards. The senior wide receiver caught 46 passes for 745 yards and 10 touchdowns. He was named to the first-team All Big Ten team.

Throughout the season, DJK had disagreements with Iowa’s football coach Kirk Ferentz and occasionally was not allowed to the speak to the media. For the team’s last game of the season against Minnesota, DJK was on the sidelines at the beginning due to an earlier misbehavior leading up to the game.

DJK is currently being held in Johnson County Jail in Iowa City and is being held on $8,000 bail. He will make an initial court appearance on Wednesday morning.

Needless to say, DJK’s Iowa career has ended.

Ferentz issued the following statement in response to today’s activities, “I am highly disappointed to learn of the charges. Derrell has been suspended from all team activities.”
