We reported earlier that the official title for the new James Bond movie, the 23rd film in the series, was announced at a press conference today as “Skyfall.” Also introduced at this packed event, which took place at London’s swanky Corinthia Hotel at Whitehall Place, were the newest additions to the long line of Bond girls. They are French actress Bérénice Marlohe (left) and British actress Naomie Harris (right). This will be the first English-language film for the 21-year-old Marlohe, who is mostly known for her appearance on various French television series. 35-year-old Harris has been acting since she was a little girl. She starred in the British sci-fi series “The Tomorrow People” and got a lot of attention for her lead role in Danny Boyle’s “28 Days Later” opposite Cillian Murphy. She has appeared in two of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” sequels and earlier this year starred in a new adaption of “Frankenstein” at London’s Royal National Theatre that was directed by Danny Boyle.
Dame Judi Dench (Bond’s boss, M) and Javier Bardem (the spy’s latest nemesis) were also on hand at the news conference along with director Sam Mendes. Production begins on Monday for the film which will be shot at Pinewood Studios but also feature international locations including Scotland, China, and Turkey.
No word yet on Bérénice Marlohe’s character’s name. Will it follow the bawdy tradition set by Bond girls Pussy Galore, Plenty O’Toole, or Holly Goodhead? Stricly speaking, Naomie Harris will not really be a Bond girl since she is slated to play a field agent in the film and not Daniel Craig’s love interest, but we’ll see how things develop—James Bond usually gets the girl no matter what her role. Dozens of women have played Bond girls since the series began more than four decades ago, with many going on to bigger and better things. Famous Bond girls of the past include Ursula Andress, Diana Rigg, Jane Seymour, Teri Hatcher, and Halle Berry.
The cast of “Skyfall” also includes Albert Finney and Ralph Fiennes. The film is scheduled to be released on November 9, 2012.
