The Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns are playing their annual Red River Rivarly game today in Dallas, but with the Sooners going for their third consecutive win in this rivalry, the first half has looked more like the Red River Romp thus far with the Longhorns being unable to mount any offense or even slow down Oklahoma on defense.

This is the first time since 1999 that neither Oklahoma nor Texas is ranked in the Top 10 when they have faced each other. In fact, it is just the second time in the past 15 years that both teams have already suffered a Big 12 conference loss before they played in the Red River Rivalry, which either speaks volumes toward the two of them or the emergence of other teams in the conference.

But as the two enter the half, Oklahoma is leading Texas by a score of 36-2.

This is a huge game for both teams. The Sooners are looking to prove some sort of dominance over Texas in this rivalry game, as they have won the previous two games by a combined score of 83-37, including last season’s 55-17 blowout. As of this minute, this year’s game has all the makings to top that one by far. Landry Jones, with a efficient first half, is also looking to become just the third Sooners quarterback to go 3-0 as the starter, although Oklahoma did lose a game in 2009 when Jones relieved an injured Sam Bradford.

It is also a bug game for more than just pride. It has huge conference implications. Entering play on Saturday, two teams – the West Virginia Mountaineers and Kansas State Wildcats – are undefeated in Big 12 play in 2012. Along with Texas and Oklahoma, the Iowa State Cyclones, TCU Horned Frogs, Texas Tech Red Raiders and Baylor Bears all also have just one loss in the conference. This game could determine which team survives and which team loses any hope of competing for the Big 12 Championship this season.

It still may have BCS Championship implications, although neither Oklahoma nor Texas is expected to still have a chance to reach the title game. They will have to settle for a BCS Bowl, at best.

The loser can forget about any of that still being an option with a loss. At halftime, that certainly looks like it will be the Longhorns.

They can thank Blake Bell for much of that, as he has rushed for 4 touchdowns at the half. Damien Williams has the big run of the day for Oklahoma, and Jones has also played well.

But the defense deserves a ton of credit for stopping the Longhorns, because if you take out the blocked extra point during the first Oklahoma touchdown, Texas would not have any points on the board. And this is a Longhorns team who has averaged nearly 47 points per game through the first six games of the 2012 college football season.

Needless to say, it will be awfully difficult for Texas to reach that mark today, as Oklahoma is well on their way toward winning their third straight game in the Red River Rivalry.

Or like I said for this game, as well as last year, it appears to be more like the Red River Romp.
