A Marine from Camp Pendleton has been killed in Afghanistan, fatally shot by someone wearing an Afghan army uniform, the Department of Defense announced Monday.

Sgt. John Huling, 25, of West Chester, Ohio, was killed Sunday in Helmand province. He was an explosive ordnance disposal technician assigned to the 7th Engineer Support Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, from Camp Pendleton.

“The incident is under investigation,” the Department of Defense said.

The individual in the Afghan army uniform opened fire on U.S. troops in the Helmand province community of Marjah, a onetime Taliban stronghold. The individual killed Huling and wounded another as yet unidentified troop, before being shot dead by coalition troops, according to the International Security Assistance Force.

Huling enlisted in 2006 and deployed to Iraq in 2007. He is survived by his wife, Priscilla, of Temecula. His brother, Justin, is also a Marine.

Mother Debbie Huling told the website John was shot in the back while on foot patrol. She said he deployed to Afghanistan sooner than anticipated because of losses in his unit.

“When he came home in March,” she said, “he sat and talked to me and honestly gave me too much information because it made me worry more. He told me everything he would be doing. I can’t remember all the details, but he told me how the Taliban tries to stay one step ahead of them.”
